INTRODUCTION Coal is geologically a sedimentary rock with distinct bedding planes containing a mixture of petrographic constituents. Yet. because of its chemical nature, it also has some of the characteristics of a polymeric material. In addition, it is extensively precracked to give a macropore structure and also has a substantial internal volume of microporosity. Add to this the mineral constituents dispersed in the coal in a variety of forms and sizes. and it can be readily appreciated that coal is a complex and heterogeneous material. It has to date not been possible to predict the particle size distributions produced by breakage of coals from a priori application of the principles of fracture mechanics. However, there is a substantial body of data resulting from empirical observation of size distributions produced under various conditions, primarily from grinding mills. It is the function of this review to outline how this empirical information can be used to predict product size distributions for those systems which have been studied systematically, and to suggest future avenues of research using similar methodology. FRACTURE THEORY APPLIED TO COAL It is, of course, possible to devise experiments for slow crack propagation in a coal. However, the evidence is that coal breaks by brittle fracture in the mills and mining machines of industrial importance and therefore the theory of brittle fracture is sufficient to illustrate the important features of the fracture of coal. In order to produce size reduction a solid must be stressed by the application of force. The force can be a tensile (stretching), compressive, or shear force, and the three dimensional stress pattern in the solid represents the tensile, compressive, and shear forces per unit area acting in any direction through any point in the solid. As an illustration consider the case of a simple one-dimensional tensile stress: then stress is defined as a=F/A where F is the force. A is the cross-sectional area of the solid normal to F and strain. E, is defined as the fractional change in the length of the solid. so that E= x/L where x is the extension of an original length of L. Coal behaves as an elastic material over short times (although viscoelastic creep can occur if the stress is maintained over long times) and if it is not stretched too far the coal returns to its original shape when the stress is removed; otherwise catastrophic failure occurs and the coal fractures at a stress termed the tensile strength. The failure under stress of an elastic material is termed brittle fracture. Elastic material fails at small stain and the stress-stain relation to where brittle fracture occurs is the empirical Hooke's law. a= YE, where Y is Young's modulus. The work done on the solid to take the solid from zero external stress to a stressed state by slowly increasing F up to a final stress u is the integral of the stress times the strain. This reversible strain energy is stored in the solid and. using Hooke's law. is u /2Y per unit volume of solid. If the solid is immediately loaded to u the work done is [EAuL] which Is a2 /Y per unit volume, that is, twice the reversible work.

INTRODUCTION The requirements of mine ventilation demand the constant attention of the mine operator. Just as the physical mine structure changes with time, the ventilation requirements of a particular mine change considerably from season to season and even from day to day. No ventilation system can remain adequate indefinitely; and all systems require monitoring and adjustments to achieve proper ventilation. Instead of being given fore- thought and planning, mine-ventilation systems too of- ten are erected hastily, merely to correct an already un- healthy situation. The usual result is an inefficient and costly system that, in some instances, may prove in- effective in providing fresh air to the point of need. The ventilation of mines is a combination of both art and science. The fluid that must be moved is in- visible; its properties change drastically with temperature, barometric pressure, and humidity; and the methods of measurement are not precise. In part, ventilation engineering must rely upon the art of good industrial ventilation experience and sometimes even the trial-and- error method. However, the properties of air can be determined with relatively inexpensive equipment; with some care, measurement accuracies within 5% of the actual values can be obtained. Thus the art of ventilation gradually is being supplanted by improved engineering practices. Although the direction of flow and the volume may not be predicted correctly by airflow equations in every situation, it is better to try to predict the behavior of a given ventilation before installation than to proceed blindly with a system design. When used with the discretion that comes from education and experience, the basic laws of ventilation can provide sub-stantial insight into the design of an air-handling system; and they can prevent wasteful or even dangerous designs from being installed. Since the mine operators who read this text will have varying amounts of exposure to ventilation theory, the basic laws of airflow and of mechanical ventilation are presented in the first section. The emphasis has been placed on the interpretation and use of fan characteristic curves that are supplied by fan manufacturers. Considerable information can be obtained from these fan curves, particularly when they are used with a graphic model of the mine, drift, or duct in which the fan or fans are to be installed. A few minutes spent comparing the various characteristic curves can help the designer obtain the correct fan for the job. However, the under- standing of a few fundamentals is necessary; and this text has been prepared to provide ample and understandable information in a "how-to" style. In subsequent sections of this text, more down-to- earth subjects will be covered, including the problems of air recirculation, relative merits of installing fans in series or in parallel, expected maintenance requirements (vibration, lubrication intervals, etc.), fan noise and some remedies, effect of an inlet bell on the fan per- formance, basic air-measurement techniques and equipment, and similar miscellaneous items. Although this text is not intended to be a comprehensive bible of mine ventilation, it has been prepared as a guide that provides some useful information to individuals responsible for the quality of the underground environment. Every person working underground is en- titled to the safest environment that can be provided within the limitations of existing technology and at a reasonable cost. This study emphasizes the importance of understanding the factors that influence the throwing of flyrock in mining operations, a significant hazard to both workers and nearby structures. Moreover, it highlights how blasting engineers, when estimating flyrock occurrences and their travel distance, typically rely on input parameters such as powder factor (PF), hole length (HL), subdrill (SD), spacing (S), hole diameter (D), burden (B) and stemming length (ST), while overlooking crucial factors like velocity of detonation (VOD) and charge per bank cubic meter (CPBCM). Through analysis using support vector machine (SVM) modeling in MATLAB, the study underscores the impact of including or excluding VOD and CPBCM on flyrock throw distance.

"In longwall mines, atmospheric or barometric pressure fluctuations can disturb the pressure balance between the gob and the ventilated working area of the mine, resulting in a phenomenon known as “gob breathing”. Gob breathing triggers a gas flow across the gob and the working areas and may result in a condition where a methane accumulation in the gob flows into the face area forming an explosive mixtures. This paper discusses results of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling carried out to analyze this phenomenon and its impact on the explosive mixture development under a bleeder-ventilated longwall gob panel scheme. Modeling results indicate that the gas inflow and outflow across the gob and the formation of Explosive Gas Zones (EGZs) are directly affected by the barometric pressure changes. Methane gas and EGZs in the gob expand out toward the face and bleeder entries during the falling barometric pressure. Where methane zones interface with mine air, EGZ fringes may form along the face and in the bleeder entries. When the atmospheric pressure increases, an ingression of oxygen into the gob is observed that can also increase EGZs in volume. The findings from this study help assess the methane ignition and explosion risks associated with fluctuating atmospheric pressures. INTRODUCTION Methane explosions continue to be a daunting risk for underground coal miners, although the number of related fatalities and injuries in the U.S. coal mining industry has steadily decreased since the establishment of the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1910. Still, the consequences of a methane explosion are often disastrous with multiple fatalities and property damage often leading to permanent shutdown of the mine. Methane is formed during the coalification process and is released from the coal seam to the mine atmosphere when the coalbed is disturbed by mining or natural causes such as earthquakes. If not properly diluted by appropriate mine ventilation, this methane may accumulate in the active mine workings and gob areas. Researchers at the Colorado School of Mines have developed numerical models showing how and where explosive methane may accumulate in gob areas. Historical mine explosions appear to show a connection between mine explosions and fluctuating barometric pressure as a result of stormy weather. McIntosh (1957), Boyer (1964), and Kissell et al. (1973) studied the influence of barometric drops on major coal mine disasters in the United States prior to 1970. Their statistical analyses found that a majority of these disasters occurred in the fall and winter months when the barometric pressures were influenced by unstable weather conditions and noted increased methane content in the mine workings during times of falling pressure. Studies conducted by Fauconnier (1992) and Hemp (1994) found similar connections between methane explosions and barometric pressure fluctuations in a majority of gas explosions in South African mines. Ten out of twelve major mine explosions with five or more fatalities in the U.S. after 1970 were found to have occurred during the months of November through April when barometric pressure swings were more abrupt and intense (Lolon et al., 2015)."

Dealing with a trend in inverse distance estimation, IWD, is presented. A measurement is proposed to be consisted of a portion due to a mean and a portion due to a residual. The procedure consists of de-trending the measurement via a linear or nonlinear regression. Residuals are computed, and IWD parameter estimation is conducted on the residuals. Estimation at un-sampled points is then computed by estimating the mean and adding on the estimate of the IWD on the residual. A possible BOXCOX transform is also proposed.

Utilization of Bucket Wheel Excavators and Overland Conveyor Systems to remove overburden provides increased productivity and flexibility to a surface mining operation. The utilization of such a system at the Texasgulf Inc. Aurora, North Carolina Mine has significantly improved the overall productivity of the mining operation. System flexibility is evidenced by adaptation to operation requirements such as mining area moves, movement of excavated overburden to designated sites, selective handling of overburden, spoil placement contouring, and providing an environmentally sound and safe operation. System productivity is evidenced by actual case studies relating to overall production, excavation rates, and cost effectiveness.

Mining in Cushenbury Canyon began in 1860 when John Cushenbury left his Holcomb Valley gold prospect and discovered a silver vein in the limestones of the present day Cushenbury Mine. Cushenbury Canyon is located along the western boundary of the Mojave Desert in Southern California and on the north slope of the San Bernardino Mountains. The Holcomb Valley, immediately southeast of Cushenbury Canyon was the most prolific gold producer in Southern California. Gold mining dominated the area until World War II when interest in the Lucerne Valley Limestone deposits was peaked by the construction of the Kaiser Steel Plant in Fontana, California. The steel making process required large amounts of metallurgical grade limestone and Kaiser geologists located claims in most of the limestone deposits. Kaiser Cement constructed a cement plant and limestone mine in Cushenbury Canyon in 1956. Kaiser Cement modernized the facility in 1982 to a four stage preheater-precalciner system. Mitsubishi Cement Corp. purchased the property in April, 1988, and through further system modifications have created the most efficient and modern cement plant in the United States.

Of many physical parameters critical to design of grinding processes, impact of grinding media is among the most difficult to measure or predict. Yet impact of falling grinding balls, pebbles, or rods accomplishes the fine grinding essential to metallurgical recovery of most important minerals. Unfortunately, the same impacts that break ore fragments deform or crack grinding mill liners. A project was undertaken at Climax Molybdenum Company to measure impact forces in operating ball mills so that they might be used to calculate stresses in liner materials and be correlated with service performance of mill liner alloys. Towards that end, a method of measuring impact forces on ball mill liners using an instrumented grinding ball has been developed. Preliminary tests show that impact forces and contact stresses imposed on bare mill liners are quite high but are greatly reduced by cushioning when coarse ore particles are crushed between balls and liners. Compressive and shear stresses induced in liners not protected by coarse ore are so severe that deformation or minute subsurface cracking are inevitable in all but the small production grinding mills, regardless of mill liner alloy strength or hardness.

The Mining Division of Utah Power and Light Company is located in the coal fields of southeastern Utah -main office in Huntington, Utah. The Division will produce 6.5 million tons of low sulfur steam coal in 1988, making UP&L the largest underground mining operation west of the Mississippi. Coal is mined from three underground mines utilizing continuous miner and longwall mining methods. All coal produced by the Mining Division is utilized at UP&L's two largest steam-electric power plants, the Hunter and Huntington plants with a combined capability of 1,995,000 Kw. At UP&L we believe that to achieve success a company must have clearly defined goals which are understood, communicated and shared at each level of operation. We have also found from experience that a safe operation is generally an efficient and productive operation. As a Division, we have established a goal to achieve the safest, most efficient operation in the country. This is an ambitious goal. To achieve such a goal requires real commitment and a safety/training program capable of achieving needed results. The following is an overview of the program we have established at UP&L which has enabled us to reduce our accident frequency rate from over 40 in 1980 to 8.00 at present, as illustrated in Figure 1.

A major cost to a mining company is funding of an exploration program. It is a necessary cost to insure the company's future. But if the exploration effort does not discover an economic are body, there is no return on investment and the days of the company are numbered. However, if you are aware of what exploration geologists are saying, it places the exploration process in a different light. Basically they are saying that ore bodies exist that contain 250,000 tons or less of gold and silver bearing ore that is cyanide amenable utilizing heap leach technology.

Most prediction methods used to calculate mining-induced subsidence rely on empirical formulations, which typically assume flat topography and uniform properties in the overburden. It is also well known that when a longwall panel mines below a valley bottom surface ground deformation magnitudes and orientations may be significantly influenced by the presence of the valley. This paper discusses ground deformation data collected at different surface locations above the Buchanan mine in the eastern United States. Measurements at individual surface points and strata movement measurements using a three-point extensometer have been collected as the area was undermined. Measurements correspond to the mining of the panel immediately under the measurement points and to the mining of adjacent panels. Measurement locations correspond to valley bottom locations. The measurements are critically evaluated and compared with respect to topography and panel face location. The issue of the fluctuation of GPS measurements is also discussed.

Based on extensive investigations on the effect of design variables on process performance, during 1982-85, Nordberg developed a 1000 hp cone crusher, with the objective of boosting crushing productivity in existing plants. The 2390 fits on the same foundation as the 7' SHD Symons cone, but is designed to give two times the capacity of the 7'. The economies of scale involved give the customer substantial cost savings. In this paper process performance of the Nordberg 2390 relative to the 7' SHD Symons cone, while crushing the same ore, will be presented. Also, implications of such a crusher scale-up to associated cost savings will be addressed.

This case study presents successful conversions of two conventional slurry tailings storage facilities (TSFs) to filtered tailings storage facilities in Durango, Mexico, for two mining operations with production rates ranging from 1,200 to 4,500 t/d (1,320 to 4,960 stpd). In both cases, the decision to make the conversion was driven by: • Ability to increase the storage capacity via stacking of filtered tailings. • Reduction of the tailings’ impacted footprint. • Mitigation of long-term geotechnical stability risks. • Alleviation of environmental risks by reducing tailings water as a source of pollutants, and a net reduction in process make-up water demand. The case studies can be divided in two classes: class 1 facilities, where slurry tailings are loaded almost immediately with filtered tailings because of storage area limitations; and class 2 facilities, where the conversion is immediate but the available area allows gradual or eventual loading of the previously stored slurry tailings. The condition where slurry tailings must be loaded almost immediately represents the greatest engineering challenge because of the geotechnical risks of instability and liquefaction (under both static and dynamic loads). Regardless of whether these facilities are converted immediately or eventually, they all require monitoring of pore water pressure conditions within the slurry tailings being loaded as the depth of placement of the filtered tailings above the slurry tailings increases. Additionally, where loading rate exceeds the pore pressure dissipation rate, tailings dewatering may be required to increase the rate of consolidation and strength and mitigate the risks of foundation failure.

Polaris Mine, a Cominco Ltd. property located on Little Cornwallis Island, Northwest Territories, Canada, (Lat. 75°30'), is the world's most northerly base metal mine. Polaris Mine, which commenced operations in late 1981, is characterized by its unique process barge. The lead/zinc concentrator, powerhouse, shops, offices, dry and warehouse have all been incorporated on a 400 ft. long by 100 ft wide by 65 ft high barge. This process barge was constructed in Southern Canada, at Trois Rivieres, Quebec, then towed 3500 miles into its final resting place on the high arctic. This paper describes the unique design of the barge concentrator and deals with the start-up and continuing operation of the Polaris Concentrator.

Ore reserves are often less than 30% of geologic resource estimates that are initially prepared by exploration geologists. Differences of this magnitude between resources and reserves can lead to serious . problems in the early valuation of properties when the geologic resource estimates are interpreted to represent ore reserves and are later found to be misleading and gross overstatements of ore reserves. The geologist can avoid such difficulties by considering the implications of mining, metallurgical recovery, and economics early in the project and by using appropriate qualifiers in the resource statement Examples using typical deposit characteristics are used to demonstrate how cutoff grade, stripping ratio, dilution, mining extraction and metallurgical recovery affect ore reserve estimations.

The leaching behavior of copper powders recovered from waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) was investigated using electrogenerated chlorine and aeration in a sulfuric acid solution with added NaCl and CuSO4. Various parameters were studied to understand the mechanism of the copper leaching. When the current density increased from 0 to 0.1 A/cm2, the temperature from 30 to 60° C, agitation speed from 100 to 400 rpm, and the size ranged from below 75 to 150 µm, the leaching ratios of copper powders increased. The leaching kinetics were analyzed using a shrinking core model: 1-(1-X)1/3 = kt, and the leaching process was chemically controlled with an activation energy of 14.7 kJ/mol due to Cl- ion catalysis. The ratios of [Cu+]/[Cu2+] at various temperatures (30, 40, 50, 60 and 70° C) showed a periodic variation with the increasing of the leaching time. The redox potentials of the leaching solution and copper leaching ratios in different conditions were measured. The result indicates that dissolved oxygen achieved the dissolution of coppers and electrogenerated chlorine can promote the dissolution of copper powders and improve the reaction rate of kinetics in the presence of oxygen.

"Horsehead Metal Products is a zinc refinery in Mooresboro, NC, treating crude Waelz oxide (WOX) to produce special high-grade zinc by a hydrometallurgical process comprising leaching, zinc solvent extraction/electrowinning, melting and casting and bleed treatment. Cadmium removal by zinc-dust cementation plays an essential role in the bleed treatment circuit to prevent cadmium buildup in the circuit. Silica, though present at a low level of approximately 0.3 percent in the WOX feed material, had a significant impact on the efficiency of cadmium cementation with zinc dust, most likely due to the passivation of zinc dust particles with silica gel. Solid/liquid separation efficiency by filter press was also affected. To identify the source of the silica issues, silica levels were mapped throughout the circuit, and adjustments, including using pregnant leach solution as the feed to cementation, and pH control in the WOX leaching and neutralization were introduced to mitigate the issues created by silica gel in the circuit. The flowsheet, known as the Modified Zincex process, consists of leaching, solvent extraction (SX), electrowinning (EW), melting and casting and bleed treatment (Fig. 1). This morning, gentlemen, I should like to discuss resin anchors of a type introduced to North America approximately 2-1/2 years ago. We shall also briefly review the basics of mechanically anchored rockbolts so that a general comparison may be made. Previous efforts with synthetic resins were aimed at aiding a mechanical Or "point" anchor, obtain a better purchase in the rock mass. Resin cartridges of the type to be described in this paper are capable of achieving point anchorage or full encapsulation of mine roof or rockbolts. Of significance, therefore, is that unlike a mechanical bolt, placed and tensioned, celtite rockbolts may be fully grouted and tensioned or left untensioned in the installation sequence. Our principle effort has been to offer this system to mining and civil engineers who have encountered difficult rock conditions and wish to reinforce strata to achieve a greater degree of permanence and safety.
