In 1981, a gas outburst accident occurred in the Yubari Shintanko coal mine, the only expectant mine in Japan, it caused 93 deaths. As a result, Yubari Shintanko closed in 1982. This major disaster was a turning point for sustainability of Yubari City, the largest coalfield in Japan. Finally, Yubari City was bankrupted in 2007. This paper aims to explore how miner’s children experienced this disaster and felt about region, family, and themselves, and to explain the relation between region declining and children’s lives. The data of this paper are the archived 600 essays, written by the junior high school students at the time of the disaster. There are three findings. First, the children who lost their father were the most shocked. They faced profound sadness. But they expressed that they had decided to overcome their sadness with surviving family. Second, the children who didn’t lose their father were also influenced. They were anxious about the future of Yubari, their family, and themselves. Furthermore, they decided to strive for their future. Third, they understood the disaster as a turning point of Yubari declining and looked ahead their future outside of Yubari. In conclusion, this disaster created their hopelessness to Yubari region and, as a result, promoted the decline of the city through their migration to other city. Furthermore, it is important to clarify that Yubari City has to continue the struggle to the regeneration.

INTRODUCTION Underground drill and blast excavation is usually accomplished with small diameter holes loaded with high energy explosives. The detonation pressures are extremely high and an extensive amount of energy is dissipated in the process; however, very little of this energy is used to create the specified fracture planes required for excavation. The available energy is expended in producing radially outgoing stress waves, in crushing the adjacent rock, and in producing a dense, randomly oriented radial crack pattern about the holes. This causes several undesirable effects: 1. Overbreak at the perimeter, which results in more muck to remove and extra concrete or shotcrete to fill the voids. 2. Damage to or loosening of the remaining rock at the perimeter which may result in the need for additional support measures. 3. Ground vibrations and/or airblast, which could result in damage to nearby structures and complaints by people living or working in the area. Several steps may be taken to minimize these effects. Where control of the perimeter is desired, smooth blasting techniques are generally employed in which the spacing and burden of perimeter holes are reduced and lighter, decoupled charges are used. Where vibration damage to structures is feared, control is generally exercised by limiting the charge weight per delay period so that the ground vibrations at the nearest structure do not exceed a peak particle velocity of two inches per second. During the past decade, approximately 5 billion pounds of explosives were used annually in the United States. Most of this quantity of explosives was used by the mining industry, with coalmining being the dominant application for explosives. Considering the large amount of explosives used, the accident safety record for the mining industry has improved significantly over the past several decades. Although blasting accidents usually represent a small percentage of the total number of mining accidents, they continue to occur and the severity of these accidents is disproportionately high compared to the other mining accidents. This paper is an analysis and summary of mine blasting accidents over the past several decades as they relate to surface coal mine operations. A compilation and review of surface mine blasting accidents from1978 through 2001 was made. The accident data was examined to identify the trends and primary causes, which continue to be blast area security, fly rock, premature blast, and misfires. Approximately 46percent of the causes of surface coal mine blasting accidents are attributed to blast area security, while fly rock, premature blast, and misfires represented an additional 50 percent of the causes. Accident categories were established based on the cause of the accident or the activity that was taking place when the accident happened. A discussion of the accident data is presented to increase hazard awareness and to emphasize safe blasting practices and MSHA requirements concerning mine blasting operations.

Early in 1977, Amoco Production Company and Houston Chemicals, a subsidiary of Pittsburg Plate Glass (PPG) Industries, started producing iodine commercially in northwestern Oklahoma. This is significant because it is the first plant in over 40 years to be built in the United States with iodine as its sole commercial product. With the exception of a limited amount of iodine produced by Dow Chemical in Michigan, the United States is dependent upon imports from Chile and Japan for its iodine needs. The two million pounds of iodine produced annually from the Woodward plant will supply over one-third of the United States' requirements. Routine analysis of subsurface brines by the Formation Water Lab at the Amoco Production Company Research Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, revealed unusually high concentrations of certain potentially economic minerals. Investigations determined that, of the minerals in question, iodine appeared to offer the best potential. The brines in question are located in the Morrow sands (basal Pennsylvanian) at a depth of 7,175 to 7.400 feet, in an area where Amoco has been active in a gas play for the past 20 years. The regional iodine concentration ranges from 10 to 700 ppm and averages around 300 ppm with the project area. The project is located 8 miles north and slightly east of the town of Woodward, where the well-developed, porous, and permeable sands of the Woodward trench contain large volumes of brine.

Extensive gravel deposits exist within a six-county area in the mountains surrounding the Salt Lake Valley, and in the mountain ranges to the west. The six-county area includes Davis, Salt Lake, Summit, Tooele, Utah, and Wasatch Counties. The majority of these are beach deposits from prehistoric Lake Bonneville. However, real estate development associated with a projected population increase of 54 percent over the next 20 years is expected to remove most gravel deposits in Salt Lake County from consideration for mining, forcing gravel operations to relocate from eastern Salt Lake Valley to the Oquirrh and Stansbury Mountains farther west. The gravels in these ranges are of lower quality and require additional processing to manufacture asphalt and concrete. Replacing gravel resources along the Wasatch Front with resources in the Oquirrh and Stansbury Mountains over the next 20 years has the potential to increase construction costs by nearly $1 billion. The majority of this cost (82 percent) is the result of increased transportation costs due to longer distances to market. The remainder of the cost is attributable to lower quality gravels that will require additional processing in the manufacture of asphalt and concrete. The following analysis and discussion does not take into consideration the amount of crushed stone that is currently being used in the construction industry in northern Utah, its use as a substitute for lower quality gravels, or as a factor in the base case projection.

By international standards, Indian coal seams are not very gassy. In some of the major coalfields such as Singareni, Wardha, Pench, Chirimiri, Rewa and Talcher Coalfields practically no methane is emitted from the coal seams. Even in the coalfields of Ranigang, Jharia, Bokaro and Karanpura, all of which are situated in the basin of the Damodar river, only a few mines are faced with excessive gas emission problems. But the number of such mines is increasing as deeper reserves are being worked and already the exploitation of some of the best quality coal reserves in the country is held up pending measures for control of methane emission in these mines. Even in mines having no previous history of gas emission, methane has been met near dykes and faults. This was dramatically revealed by an explosion in Dhori colliery in 1965 wherein 268 persons got killed. Until that time, Dhori colliery was considered as a non-gassy mine but on that fateful day gas came to the workings through a freshly exposed fault plane. Similar incidences of ignition of firedamp in so-called non-gassy mines have also occured in the past, for example, in Chapui Khas and Samla Dalurband collieries, but the casualty figures were not as high. After the Dhori explosion, all Indian coal seams have been declared to be gassy, whether presence of methane is detected in the workings or not.

The Egyptian marine phosphorite of Sebaiya West, the Nile Valley, consisting of both non-oxidized hard siliceous and oxidized leached friable ore types, is subjected to a roughing-cleaning silica flotation circuit for production of wet-process phosphoric acid concentrate. Operating at its maximum capacity of 268 t/hr, the following were the main problems encountered during the early stages of running the plant: 1. The tremendous amount of slimes generated by scrubbing the crushed ore causing turbidity in the plant thickener after a short time of operation, regardless of the added flocculant. 2. Rod mill choking leading to inefficient performance of all other equipment and poor flotation results. 3. The drastic increase in imported oleic acid price. Pulp density and slurry flowrate measurements at different points of the plant as well as ore microscopy, size distribution analysis, chemical analysis and x-ray diffraction analysis of representative ore samples coupled with Work Index measurements of feed samples showed that the wide variation in the ore's hardness was responsible for such problems. Application of the locally produced non-edible rice bran oil as a substitute to imported oleic acid in flotation resulted in total saving of U.S.$2 million in 1990. The total unsaturated fatty acid content of the oil is high, ranging from 75.2 to 81.5 mole % of which the C18-unsaturated fatty acid content ranges from 72 to 79 mole %.

BHP Iron Ore initiated a program in January, 1995 at their Mt. Whaleback operation in Newman, Western Australia to develop a decommissioning plan for the waste rock material. The primary research program includes the development of technology for the long term performance of the waste rock dumps with respect to vegetation, slope stability, surface runoff, erosion, and water infiltration. This paper evaluates field performance of cover systems constructed on a horizontal and a sloped waste rock surface. The cover system is constructed using suitable run-of-mine waste material to minimize closure costs. The moisture is subsequently released to the atmosphere as evapotranspiration. Rainfall entering the waste material is buffered due to the presence of the cover material thereby significantly reducing net percolation to the underlying waste rock. The objective is to control acid rock drainage by preventing moisture movement into and through the waste rock material. Two years of field data are presented to illustrate low percolation rates to the underlying waste rock and key performance characteristics of the moisture store and release cover system design. Field data collected to date demonstrates that a moisture store and release cover system constructed with suitable run-of-mine waste material has good potential as a final acid rock drainage control cover system at the Mt. Whaleback site. The performance of the cover system on a sloped surface was significantly altered as compared to placing the cover system on a horizontal surface.

Constantly increasing demand for energy materials and metal ores brought about tremendous progress in mining techniques which are characterised by a high degree of mechanization and concentration of works. One of the recent trends in underground mining mechanization is connected with an application of heavy machines with diesel engines [l],[2]. The introduction of diesel engines in mining all over world caused not only improvement in economic conditions but also the necessity to prevent contamination of air in the mine by toxic agents in diesel exhaust emissions. A generally used way of eliminating exhaust gases is proper ventilation of the cross cut by means of providing permanent exchange of air that would guarantee in every point of the cross cut and in every moment the decay in concentration of exhaust gases beyond threshold limit [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. The present paper is an attempt to define a mathematical model describing the changes of concentration in cross cut face to which fresh air is distributed by ventilators and tubes in a forcing way. Obtained model should offer its practical adaptability to engineering calculation of the amount of fresh air needed for diluting and eliminating exhaust gases beyond threshold limit. Justness of these models has been confirmed by investigation of the growth of nitrogen dioxide concentration in air environment in some cross cut faces of Kiirunavaara iron ore mine in Kiruna (Sweden).

An important problem in mine operations is the classification of material as waste, low-grade stockpile and ore. This classification must often be made with blasthole data that are widely spaced and that have sampling errors. Geostatistical-simulation techniques combined with basic economic principles allow a procedure for classification that maximizes the expected profit. Geostatistical-simulation methods (Gaussian, indicator or annealing-based) allow the integration of hard and soft data in the creation of alternative, equally probable realizations of the mineral grades. At each location, for each realization one calculates the "profit" if the block were to be classified as ore or waste. The optimal classification is the one that maximizes expected profit (a maximum profit selec¬tion or MPS procedure). In this paper, the authors discuss the theoretical justification of the method and implementation details. The use of blasthole data from different types of mineral deposits, that is, different levels of continuity, are considered. The authors also show the efficacy of the procedure with different levels of sampling error. The increased revenue due to the MPS procedure and improved sampling is shown. The paper shows the geostatistical-simulation procedure and the uncertainty in block grades that result from incomplete and imperfect sampling. The optimal classification is presented. Optimal block classifications are transferred to realizable dig limits by hand-drawing polygonal boundaries. The results of the proposed method are compared to classification based on kriging. Limitations and areas of future work are identified.

INTRODUCTION One of the main problems in tunneling without the use of explosives lies in the development of tools which, at an economically acceptable level, are capable of continuous breakage of the rock, resulting in a fragmentation suitable for a smooth, uninterrupted transportation of the muck away from the tunnel face. Tools employed on tunneling machines have, so far, always been of the mechanical kind which break up the rock by a crushing and shearing action. Other methods of rock breaking are possible but, even if some of them have reached the laboratory testing stage, nearly all of them are still too "exotic" to be of any practical use in the immediate future. One must admit, however, that some highly interesting results are beginning to be reported from the USA on the use of high pressure water jets for the destruction of rock through erosion, a field pioneered in Europe(USSR and Great Britain). Mechanical breakage of the rock is effected by inducing stresses exceeding its compressive/shear strength, by loading it with a wedge of cone shaped tool, until cracks are formed and chips loosened. In order to allow the tools to act upon the rock face continuously, they are commonly shaped as rotating bodies, "roller bits" or "disc cutters", spinning freely and mounted on a revolving boring head of tunnel diameter. The thrust of the tools against the face is generally exerted in a direction which is parallel to the tunnel axis.

Recovery performance may be measured in absolute terms or in relative ones that relate the actual mining outcome to what was expected. Consideration is possible in terms of the control exercised by the operator. The eventual mineral output is the only figure known with complete certainty. The paradox is that, while performance is judged against the sampling, the reverse also applies. The R/Efactor and its four component factors are the best overall measures of performance. The choice of equipment for sampling and mining is very important. The sampling process may introduce errors and the sample density may lead to poor mining block selection. The resulting recovery performance is most visible on a regression curve. Changes in the cutoff grade must also be taken into account to avoid unrealistic production targets. Estimation methods incorporating different mathematical assumptions and techniques may cause over-or underestimation of the grade and volume. If the selective ability of the mining equipment does not match the size of the reserve blocks, the performance will be compromised. The treatment plant efficiency, the throughput rate and the degree of bedrock clean-up also affect performance. The maximization of throughput does not yield the optimum results. Marine conditions, which are outside the operator's control, affect not only operational availability but also performance. Examples are provided from actual operations for various commodities, showing the relative magnitude of the different effects upon performance.

Dry cover systems as a closure option for management and decommissioning of waste rock and tailings is a common prevention and control technique used at numerous sites around the world. Numerous site-specific factors control the long-term performance of dry cover systems. Site-specific climate conditions are one of the key factors to consider when determining the objectives of a dry cover system because these conditions will significantly influence long-term performance. There are advantages and disadvantages of characterizing the site on an annual basis as generally a “dry” site (annual potential evaporation greatly exceeds annual precipitation), or generally a “wet” site (annual precipitation meets or exceeds annual potential evaporation). The field performance monitoring data and discussion presented herein illustrates the caution that is required when using these “annual” criteria for characterizing site climate conditions. Numerous sites exist where precipitation exceeds potential evaporation on an annual basis; however, the site typically experiences hot, dry summer months where evaporation greatly exceeds rainfall. These dry summer conditions have a strong influence on long-term performance. In contrast, sites where potential evaporation exceeds precipitation on annual basis, typically experience periods of the year when a moisture surplus occurs, which also impacts on long-term performance. This paper uses soil-atmosphere cover design modelling and field performance monitoring from sites in Canada, Australia, and the United States to demonstrate the importance of considering site-specific climate conditions when predicting long-term cover system performance.

Due to variation in the geological natures of underground coal mines, especially when the entry?s roof/floor are soft and weak, it is vital to select an appropriate roof bolting system to ensure entry stability, coal production, and miner?s safety. No single type of roof bolting system perfectly fits for various types of openings, even within a mine. From the results of continuous research on roof bolting in the past 10 years, the authors used a novel concept of ?Self-screwed? mechanism to develop five types of roof bolting under a patented Self-screwed Tube Bolting System (STBS)©. This roof tube bolting system can be applied to meet different timing-strength requirements under varying mining conditions to increases the stability of mine workings. This paper outlines the structures and mechanisms of the five types of self-screwed roof bolting systems along with their unique characteristics, advantages and disadvantages, and limitations. Two case studies using a Self-screwed Tube Drilling Bolting (STDB)©, one of the five types of roof tube bolting systems, show the principles of mechanics, suitability and parameters for a mine entry and a subway?s construction/ supports in the surrounding soil layers and soft sands, respectively are presented. The results confirmed the time dependent anchorage capacity between predictions and on-site measurements. Currently, other types of the self-screwed tube bolting systems are also being applied to different coal mines in China to increase entry stability and meet safety requirements.

This paper summarizes significant findings from the ongoing NIOSH Gas Well Stability research over the past decade; in particular, the important ground control engineering considerations. Longwall-induced surface and subsurface deformations may induce gas well casing deformations and stresses, depending on a few parameters such as overburden depth, overburden geology, topographic relief, strata dip, gas well setback distance, and a gas well casing cementing alternative. Overburden depth to the mining seam is one of the most influential factors; shallow overburden depth induces large horizontal displacement and resulting casing deformation and stress, while deep overburden depth induces large longwall-induced vertical pressure. Overburden geology is another important factor affecting the longwall- induced casing deformations and stresses; the large contrast of bending stiffness at the soft-to-hard rock interfaces tends to induce large casing deformations and stresses. Large surface topographic relief and the presence of soft-to-hard rock interfaces below the stream valley bottoms may shift longwall-induced subsurface gas well casing deformations closer to the surface, thus having less impact on underground. mining operations. Strata dip magnifies longwall-induced deformations by 20% per degree of strata dip for down dip longwall excavations. The gas well setback distance is also a critical geometric parameter; the effect of longwall-induced deformation decreases exponentially as the setback distance increases. Longwall-induced casing deformation and stress will be mitigated or totally uncoupled for uncemented production casing.

Coal is broadly recognized as sure, competitive, diversified, not vulnerable and predictable in price energy resource. In power generation coal is playing a dominant role in the EU-27 with 25% of installed capacity and almost one third of the power generation. The role played by the domestic resources and especially by coal are increasingly becoming the focus of the EU energy strategy. There is a strong pressure for the decarbonization of the energy mix. The Emission Trading system (ETs) can have an impact on the shift to lower carbon-intensity fuels. The impact of ETs on coal can be important, because it is very short sighted and only defines the period up to 2008-2012. The ETs CO2 regime must ensure that investment in coal-fired plants in the long term are supported. EU Research Institutes and Coal Industry identified an important CO2 reduction potential by improving the efficiency of the conversion of solid fuels into electricity. Highly efficient clean coal technologies can contribute to reasonable costs and challenge the issue of climate change. It must be pointed out that the EU Energy policy should now concentrate on the necessity to effectively support demonstration projects and to create the legal framework for the integrated approach of efficiency enhancement and CCS. It is not a right approach to implement CCS before the technology is demonstrated and before it is clear that it will be commercially viable.

Few, if any, of the non-ionizing radiation health hazards to be found in either surface or underground coal mining are uniquely different because of their being found in the work environment. Hence, they can be considered generally for their bio-effects on the worker when found in the mining work environment. The same may not be said, however, for the lack of non-ionizing radiation and its bio-effects, particularly as it relates to underground coal mining. The term "non-ionizing radiation" refers to various forms of electromagnetic radiation of wavelengths longer than those of ionizing radiation. As the wavelength gets longer the energy of electromagnetic radiation decreases. Therefore, all non-ionizing forms of radiation have less energy than cosmic, gamma, and X-radiation. In order of increasing wavelength, non-ionizing radiation includes ultraviolet, visible light, infrared, microwave, and radiofrequency radiations. The energy frequency and wavelength range of both the ionizing and non-ionizing electromagnetic forces are shown in Table I. To convert the wavelengths of various radiations to Ångström units, one multiplies millimicrons by ten. In a vacuum, all electromagnetic radiation has the same velocity, namely 3 x 1010 centimeters per second. The natural source of radiant energy here on earth is our sun which emits radiation continuously over a wide spectrum. This radiation on average reaching earth ranges from 290 nm in the ultraviolet range to over 2,000 nm in the infrared range with a maximum intensity of about 480 nm in the visual range. You will note this falls into the visible blue wavelength and accounts for our blue sky and blue ocean and deep water effects. We are all familiar with the fact that the passage of solar radiation through the atmosphere to the earth changes the spectrum considerably because the atmosphere absorbs and scatters many of the sun's rays. The ozone in the upper atmosphere absorbs the shorter ultraviolet wavelengths and water vapor absorbs some of the infrared wavelengths. Smoke, dust particles, gas molecules and water droplets scatter the rays, especially those of shorter wavelengths. In addition to the sun, every gas, liquid or solid object at a temperature above absolute 0° radiates energy. Solid objects emit almost continuous spectra. At low temperatures only radiation of the longer wavelengths in the infrared range is emitted, but as the temperature of the object is increased, more and more of the shorter wavelengths are added. This fact is most readily demonstrated by heating a piece of steel. When a piece of steel reaches a temperature of about 1,700° Fahrenheit, it gives off radiation at the red end of the visible spectrum and appears dull red. As the temperature is further increased, the shorter rays are also emitted, until at about 2,100°F, the metal appears white, due to the emission of wavelengths throughout the entire visible range. Gasses, on the other hand, when heated emit radiant energy only at certain wavelengths, which are characteristic of their chemical structure. This latter fact is of importance in underground coal mining as high intensity gas and vapor lamps are becoming more and more utilized for illumination in underground coal mining. The biologic effect of non-ionizing radiation exposure depends upon the type and duration of exposure and on the amount of absorption by the miner. The effects of this radiant energy on the miner fall into four distinct types: (1) the heating effect of infrared radiation, (2) the effect on the eye of visible radiation, (3) the effects of ultraviolet radiation, and (4) the growing potential effects of the misuse of microwave radiation. Each non-ionizing type of radiation will be considered individually. ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION The sun is the major source of ultraviolet radiation, which is of concern in open pit and surface mining at certain seasons and in certain climes necessitating protection for the surface miners under those conditions; nonetheless, there are some man-made sources such as electric arc lights, welding arcs, plasma jets, and special ultraviolet bulbs for illumination underground that demand surveillance in the underground environment to be aware of whether the miners are at risk above the threshold limit values allowable. Since ultraviolet radiation has little penetrating power, the organs that are affected are the skin and the eyes. Ultraviolet radiation is strongly absorbed by nucleic acids and proteins, and the effects in man are largely chemical rather than thermal. Short-term effects on miners include acute changes in the skin. These are of four types: (a) darkening of pigment, (b) erythema (sunburn), (c) increase in pigmentation (tanning) and (d) changes in cell growth. Ultraviolet radiation also causes acute effects on the tissues of the eye. Overexposure can lead to keratitis, inflammation of the cornea, and conjunctivitis. Long-term effects of ultraviolet exposure include an increase in the rate of ageing of the skin with degeneration of skin tissue and a decrease in elasticity. Late effects of ultraviolet on the eye include the development of cataracts. The most serious chronic effect of ultraviolet exposure is skin cancer. Ultraviolet radiation effects are increased by some industrial materials and drugs. After exposure to such compounds as cresols, the skin is exceptionally sensitive to ultraviolet radiation. Photosensitivity reactions occur after exposure to a variety of other chemicals and drugs including dyes, phenothiazines, sulfonamides, and sulfanylureas. INTRODUCTION Lung cancer in uranium miners has been attributed to alpha irradiation of basal cells of the bronchial epithelium by radon daughters, primarily by 7.7 MeV alphas from polonium-214 (Altshuler et al., 1964). It also has been was observed that for a given cumulative radon progeny exposure, uranium miners who smoke cigarettes have an incidence of lung cancer about 10 times higher than nonsmoking miners (Lundin et al., 1969). It has been pointed out that the large excess of lung cancer deaths among smoking uranium miners is a multiplicative effect (Doll, 1971), which suggested possible synergistic interactions between airborne radon progeny and cigarette smoking. Experimental studies of the complex pattern of interactions between radon progeny, cigarette smoke particles, and the cigarette smoking process are in progress in our laboratory. Preliminary results, reported elsewhere (Martell, 1981), implicate alpha radiation from indoor radon progeny in the etiology of lung cancer in all cigarette smokers. Cigarette smoking produces high concentrations of smoke particles of low mobility and respirable size--particles between 0.5 and 4.0 µm in aerodynamic diameter (see below). The attached fraction of indoor radon progeny is highly dependent on the air concentration of small particles from cigarette smoking and from other combustion sources (Martell, 1981). The size distribution and other properties of radon progeny associated with cigarette smoke particles enhances their effectiveness in the induction of bronchial cancer in man. In this paper we discuss the properties of radon progeny associated with cigarette smoke, the fractionation of radon progeny and modification of their aerosol properties in burning cigarettes, the role of 218Po in these processes, the production of insoluble 214Pb and 212 Pb enriched particles in burning cigarettes, and the consequent differences in the patterns of polonium isotope alpha irradiation in the bronchial epithelium of smokers. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Experimental methods used in these studies involve the use of small experimental chambers of known radon and radon progeny concentrations in combination with aerosol collection and sizing techniques and sensitive radioactivity detection methods. The use of low-level [ß-] counting for radon progeny determination, providing a measure of 214 Pb plus 214Bi activity, makes it possible to carry out chamber experiments with small radon emanation sources and relatively low air concentrations of radon and radon progeny concentrations in the range from 100 to 1,000 pCi per liter. Thus, for example, in a typical experiment we use a 10 nanocurie 226Ra solution standard in a 10 liter chamber, providing an equilibrium concentration of 1,000 pCi of radon per liter. In small sealed chambers, radon progeny plate out rapidly on the chamber walls, with steady-state concentrations of airborne progeny less than 2 percent of equilibrium levels. This is experimentally convenient because, upon introduction of high concentrations of cigarette smoke particles or small particles from other sources, there is a systematic ingrowth of attached radon progeny, providing a tagged aerosol source of known age and radon progeny composition. In some chamber experiments a 226Ra solution standard of small volume, acidified to O.1N HNO3, was used as the radon emanation source. When used with a bubbler the holdup of radon in an 8 ml volume of 226Ra solution standard at 0.1N HN03 was only 2% of the total radon in the chamber at equilibrium. For experiments with 212Pb-tagged aerosols, we used a dry Ba(228Th) stearate emanation source prepared by the method of Hursh and Lovaas (1967). 226Ra and 222Rn determinations were made by radon gas counting. The 222Rn in a sealed air or water sample is transferred, using helium gas as a carrier, successively through a dry ice cooled trap at -80°C to remove water, through ascarite to remove C02, and through a small activated charcoal trap at -80°C to collect the 222Rn. Subsequently, by heating the charcoal to 400°C, the 222Rn is transferred next to an LN2-cooled capillary trap, and finally into an alphascintillation counting cell of the type described by Lucas (1957). As already stated, radon progeny activities were determined by low-level [ß-] counting, which provides a measure of 214Pb plus 214Bi. The radon progeny samples, collected on efficient Delbag polystyrene micro-fiber filters or on impactor foils, are placed in close, sandwich geometry between two thin-walled flow counters inside shielding anticoincidence counters and a 15 cm thickness of steel shielding. This configuration provides nearly 4II geometry and a low background of only 0.25 to 0.30 cpm. Aluminum absorber was added to provide a combined thickness of absorber and counter wall exceeding 7.0 mg/cm2 to eliminate the variable contribution of 7.7 MeV alphas from 214Po. 212 Pb determinations also were carried out by low-level [ß-] counting, in this case using a combined absorber and counter wall thickness of 9.0 mg/cm2 to eliminate contribution of 8.8 MeV alphas of 21 Po. In each experiment the [ß- ]activity data were corrected for decay to an appropriate common reference time for assessment of activity distributions.

The Loesche Mill, also known as the Disc Roll Mill, is a special type of roller mill in which the grinding surfaces consist of two rollers assembled over a horizontal disc or table which rotates at a relatively low speed. This design is particularly applicable to industry's present day demand for large capacity grinding mills.

ABSTRACT OF ORAL PRESENTATION A discussion of current U. S. Bureau of Mines research into the problem of strata control in multiple Western coal seams will be presented. The problem and research priorities will be described as determined from interviews with major Colorado and Utah mine operators as well as governmental agencies responsible for Federal leases. Proposed contract research and ongoing in-house studies will be discussed, including case histories and results from projects being conducted at two multiple seam operations in Utah.
