This paper offers a comprehensive solution to the problem of dust emissions at belt conveyor transfer points. It discusses details of enclosure design and presents a straightforward procedure for calculating required dust control exhaust volumes. Many design variables are taken into account which heretofore have been commonly ignored or inadequately considered. These include belt widths, belt speeds, enclosure openings, material flow rates, material bulk densities, material lump sizes, height of material fall, material temperature, and ambient air temperature. All of these quantities are handled by means of a "fill-in-the-blanks" type of calculation form which permits quick, reliable solutions by relative "non- experts".

It was first pointed out in 1934 by Gaudin (1) that the "oily" oxidation product of the alkyl xanthate ion-dialkyl dixanthogen, might be the "active flotation agent" on sulphide minerals and there have been a number of studies supporting this hypothesis (2,3,4). However, all of these studies have relied largely on electrochemical evidence. Galena, being a semiconductor, may be used as an electrode in aqueous solution and it was shown that ethyl xanthate ion does not adsorb with charge transfer in the absence of oxygen unless the potential of the galena surface is above -100 mv versus the hydrogen electrode (H2 E). At this potential the galena surface is slightly hydrophobic but does not become strongly hydrophobic unless the potential is raised to 210 mv (versus H2 E). It is suggested that, at potentials of 210 mv or above, ethyl xanthate ions are oxidised to diethyl dixanthogen and that chemisorption of oxygen raises the galena surface to this potential. On the other hand, examination of xanthated galena surfaces by chemical or physical methods (5,6,7) has failed to detect dixanthogen and it has been shown that dixanthogen may be reduced to lead xanthate at a lead sulphide surface. It was suggested by Leja and Poling (5) that, as dixanthogen is a neutral molecule it would not be repelled by the negatively charged galena surface so that the adsorption was envisaged as taking place through homogeneous oxidation of the xanthate ion to dixanthogen, adsorption and reduction of the dixanthogen to a chemisorbed lead xanthate species. In paper I of this series (11) it was shown that the thiosulphate ion, which forms on galena surfaces in slurries at the pH normally used for flotation, will reduce dixanthogen. There is, therefore, the impasse that the electrochemical evidence requires that xanthate ion be oxidised to dixanthogen at the galena surface while the chemical evidence shows that the reverse reaction takes place.

The Bear Creek Uranium Mill was designed in 1975 to process 909 tonnes per day (1000 STPD) of low-grade uranium ore from the Powder River Basin in Wyoming. The mill was expanded to 1818 tonnes per day (2000 STPD) in 1979. The Bear Creek Uranium Project is owned by the Bear Creek Uranium Company, a partnership of Rocky Mountain Energy Company and Mono Power Company. The original mill design contemplated processing ores from Bear Creek Uranium Company properties exclusively. The expanded capacity has been utilized for tolling ores from Kerr McGee Nuclear Corp. and other mining companies in the region. This paper describes the process of designing the original mill, the lessons learned from operation, and the design of the process modifications required for expansion. The project background, design philosophy, design basis, design criteria, actual flowsheet, special design considerations, and a comparison of assumed operating conditions and actual operating results will be presented. Bear Creek Uranium Company wishes to thank and acknowledge the help granted by the many operating companies who provided invaluable information, insight, and critique of the Bear Creek design through all the various stages and were instrumental in the successful completion and start-up of the mill. Without their contributions, the design philosophy used at Bear Creek would not have been possible and the results obtained would surely have been less satisfactory.

The mining, beneficiation, and processing of phosphate rock in the Florida phosphate district constitutes a large portion of the southeastern mining industry. For example, 1973 production is reported to have been approximately 35 million tons of phosphate rock (Guimond and Windham, August 1975) and production has increased to over 45 million tons in recent years. The 1973 activity involved the movement of approximately 127 mil lion tons of material. From the hydrologic standpoint, this mining and beneficiation requires the dewatering of ore horizons, pumpage of large quanitites of water for mining and processing operations, and the entrainment of immense quantities of water in waste slurries. Also of significance is the fact that the cited 1973 production involved the disruption of approximately 3200 curies of radium and over 6000 curies of uranium. Much of this material reported with waste products, with the potential for contamination of area ground waters. However, natural removal mechanisms active within the area have generally been effective in preventing significant contamination of the ground-water resource.

My charge is to review briefly "Coal In The Electric Utility Industry - Present and Future." Thus, I will not dwell on the overall energy picture, other than to express what most others involved in the energy picture know - we're in trouble! Several years ago, speaking to another engineering society, I said, "Much has been and yet will be said and written about the energy situation in our Country." What an understatement! The energy question has reached crisis proportions and is a top priority item at the highest level of government, Unfortunately, it will be in that situation for some time to come. Many factors created this complex problem, and we all share some of the blame. But I am perplexed when I read in the popular press that environmental factors are unrelated to the energy crisis when I know this to be untrue. In the recent past all forms of energy have been cast in the role of villain, particularly coal with its problems of surface mining, mine safety, acid water drainage, sulfur content, and a multitude of other adverse factors relating to the environment in one way or another. As you know, the sulfur situation has led to the closing of numerous mines, resulting in the lessening of our mining capacity. Today, along the Eastern Seaboard, 60 to 70 million tons of coal are displaced by imported oil, primarily to meet air standards. Even in the Midwest, utilities sitting on enormous coal reserves are converting to other fuels or hauling low sulfur coal thousands of miles from the western Mountain States. The carbonaceous Monkemeyer sandstone member of the Creede Formation on Bachelor Mountain hosts alteration and mineralization which contrasts with other silver deposits of the Amethyst system. More than 20 million ounces of silver are contained in disseminated mineralization in the volcaniclastic conglomerates and sandstones. Hydrothermal fluids entered the Creede Formation directly from the Amethyst fault system and mixed with flowing meteoric ground waters trapped beneath the Monkemeyer sandstone. Portions of the basal rocks of the Creede Formation were argillically altered by more dense acidic fluids generated by boiling. The carbonaceous base of the Monkemeyer and much of the conglomerates below were mineralized and well silicified. Deposition of the mineralization resulted from two processes: (1) reduction by carbon in the Monkemeyer, and (2) fluid mixing in the conglomerates. Monkemeyer mineralization is confined to the carbonaceous basal material and silver content is relatively consistent. Silver is contained in acanthite which is commonly associated with traces of galena, chalcocite, covellite and sphalerite. Fluid mixing and mineral deposition in the poorly sorted conglomerates was controlled by the highly variable porosity and permeability. Anomalous silver contents are dispersed throughout a large volume of conglomerates but zones of higher silver content reflect the crude layering of the conglomerates. Acanthite is finely disseminated in pore spaces and partly replaces some detrital magnetite. other metallic minerals are rare in the main zone of mineralization.

The purpose of this paper is to make a comparative cost analysis of domestic and foreign exploration projects which developed into mines during the 1960-1974 time period. A total of 18 mining companies, American and Canadian, were approached to solicit cost data on domestic and foreign exploration projects which developed into mines. Only 20 percent of the companies to which questionnaires were sent made data available. Several companies answered negatively, informing us that they would have difficulty in attempting to sort our costs. Some companies were usable to release cost details. It is comforting, however, to realize that some of the non-contributing companies expressed eagerness to hear the findings of this paper. Inasmuch as the data available on exploration expenditures is, in some cases, somewhat uncertain and that no two mining companies follow the same system of cost allocations, the results obtained in this analysis should he interpreted as trends of a general character.

HISTORY The history of mining in the Outokumpu Co. shows continuous development of small and medium-sized mines, coupled with a permanent improvement in min¬ing methods and mechanization. Tables 1 and 2 provide a brief outline of the major events over the years of operation. Some of the mines have had relatively short lives as in the case of Nivala, Korsnas, Kylmäkoski, the surface pits of the Kotalahti, Vuonos, and Hammaslahti mines, and some very small pits. The sequence in which the mines started opera¬tions is shown in Table 1 and production increases in Table 2. GEOLOGICAL FRAMEWORK Most of the ore deposits in Finland (see Fig. 1) are situated in middle Precambrian (1500 to 2300 m.y.) formations corresponding to the Baltic shield. The ores and country rocks are generally firm, with a minimum compressive strength of 60 MPa (8700 psi). The sulfide ores, of importance to the national econ¬omy, can be divided into copper-nickel deposits, asso¬ciated with basic and ultrabasic rocks (1900 m.y.), and the sulfide ores found in well-preserved Svecokarelidic crystalline schists (1800 to 2300 m.y.) which contain varying amounts of copper, zinc, cobalt, nickel, and lead. Over 90% of the sulfide ore mined to date in Fin¬land and existing in the known ore reserves belongs to deposits situated in the main sulfide ore belt. The main sulfide ore belt includes the Outokumpu copper-zinc, the Kotalahti nickel-copper, the Pyhäsalmi copper-zinc, and the Vihanti zinc ore zones. The Outokumpu ore district occurs in a mica schist area about 60 x 100 km, in association with belts of metamorphic Svecokarelidic quartzites, black schists, dolomites, skarn rocks, and serpentinites. The main ore minerals are chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and sphalerite. In addition there are nickel and cobalt minerals such as cubanite and cobalt-pentlandite, which have been of economic importance. In this area, Outokumpu Oy exploits the deposits at Keretti and Vuonos. The latter was discovered as an extension of the Keretti ore field about 6 km to the northeast. The Kotalahti geological formation extends across nearly 400 km. The host rock of these mostly pipelike deposits is generally serpentinite, pyroxenite, or norite. The main ore minerals are pyrrhotite, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite. In this zone, the deposits of Kotalahti, Hitura, and Virtasalmi are at present under exploitation by Outokumpu Oy. The Vihanti geological formation is located in west¬ern Finland and is about 40 km wide and some 200 km long. The rock associations are crystalline schists including dolomites, mica schists, mica gneisses, gray¬wacke, and acidic or basic volcanic rocks, which change generally, in connection with the mineralization, into skarn and cordierite-anthophyllite rocks. The host rocks are dolomite, skarn, graywacke, and quartzitic rock and the principal minerals are sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena, pyrite, and pyrrhotite. The accessory minerals are mainly cubanite, arsenopyrite, molybdenite, and native gold and silver. The two largest ore bodies being exploited at pres¬ent by Outokumpu Oy are the Vihanti mine, which pro¬duces zinc, lead, and copper, and Pyhäsalmi, which con¬tains copper and zinc. A high-strength, industrial-grade membrane filter- cloth capable of high flow rates and sub-micrometric particle retention has been developed. A filtration system using this filter- combined with special filtration techniques and using tubular-filters makes possible the filtration of many difficult-to-jilter slurries. Small, discrete, slowly-settling particles are formed into filter cakes that when pulsed of the membrane filter cloth do not redisperse but settle rapidly to form a dense filter under- flow. A positive separation of solids from liquids is obtained.

The paper applies the principles of the incompressible viscous fluid-flow to studying the movement of particles on shaking table and examines the separating process of tabling according to Bagnold's shearing theory. It is shown that, in addition to the periodic movement, the particles possess the uniform movement on the asymmetrical reciprocating table; the dilation of the particle layers on the table is periodically obtained; on the backward stroke, the particles in the bed are kept loose because the shearing dispersive pressure is of maximum: the differences between the light and heavy particles become greater when the length and frequency of the stroke are greater and the deck motion is more asymmetrical.

Roots of many hydroponically grown terrestrial plants, including sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) effectively remove toxic metals such as Cu+2, Cd+2, Cr+6, Ni+2, Pb+2 and Zn+2 2 from aqueous solutions. It should be possible to scale up this process such that plant roots can be used to treat large volume aqueous waste streams. It can be extrapolated from laboratory results that to reduce the Cd concentration in a waste stream, from 1 ppm to below 4 ppb, with a flow rate of 4000 L/min, would require 3500 sq. m of plant roots with a density 5 kg fresh weight per sq. m. These results suggest that the roots of hydroponically grown terrestrial plants may provide an attractive alternative to the accepted water treatment technologies.

A form of column flotation cell is described in which the contact between the feed and the air stream is made in a mixing device at the top of a vertical downcomer. The air-liquid mixture flows downward to discharge into a shallow pool of pulp in the bottom of a short cylindrical column. The bubbles disengage and rise to the top of the column to overflow into a concentrate launder, while the tails are discharged from the bottom of the vessel. The main advantages of the device described are that the overall height of the column is reduced to about one metre (3 ft), and the column can be self-inducing with respect to the air supply. Experimental results are given from tests on a feed stream to a conventional zinc cleaner circuit. Using wash-water to reduce gangue entrainment, the column gave high concentrate grades and high recoveries.

The need to feed an established talc mill from a crude ore source located closer to the mill prompted the 1986 drilling of a previously mapped, talc-carbonate deposit. This talc-bearing rock had never been considered a potential source of crude talc ore because of the high carbonate content and other deleterious minerals observed in outcrops. Selective mining, in-pit grade control and creative processing have allowed this deposit to be developed into an ore body. By definition, an ore body has to be a source of positive cash flow. With industrial minerals, this is determined as much by market acceptance as by ore tenor.

There are technical and commercial limitations to using high fluorine copper concentrates in industrial copper smelters. The presence of more than 1,000-ppm fluorine affects the sulfuric acid units generally integrated to copper smelters. Price penalties are normally applied to copper concentrates with high fluorine contents. Several process alternatives to resolve this issue were studied at the Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) Technology Center, Santa Luzia, Brazil. These alternatives included modifications to conventional sulfuric acid plants so that they can use high fluorine concentrates; removal of fluorine-containing minerals by flotation using depressants; selective leaching of fluorine minerals; and sulfuric acid leaching of the copper concentrates. As a result of this research, a hydro¬metallurgical process to remove fluorine and upgrade copper concentrates was developed by the CVRD.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines research on the use of cement as an agglomeration aid allowed precious metals heap leaching to become an economically viable method of precious metal recovery during the 1980's. However, many agglomerated ore bodies still exhibited poor heap/agglomerate strength. Precious metal recovery was often too slow or required prohibitively high levels of cement to be economically sound. Problems with heap ponding, blinding, and solution channeling and "wash-out" indicated that there was a need within the industry to improve on existing agglomeration technology. An in-depth research effort was undertaken to satisfy this need. Three years of research led to a patent on the use of vinyl addition polymers as effective agglomeration aids. A close working relationship between Brewer Gold and Nalco Chemical Company aided in the development of this program. This paper details the pilot test work, the full-scale evaluation at Brewer Gold Company, and conclusions.

This paper describes research being undertaken by the Chamber of Mines Research Organization (COMRO) to assist the continuous miner operator and section foreman in the performance of their jobs. The project will initially provide visual assistance to the miner operator, and later it will semiautomate the mining (cutting) process. Using a technique known as "RF tagging," the project will also provide the section foreman with real-time or near-real-time information about the performance of the loading and hauling units. This data will allow the section foreman to quickly detect problems and take action where appropriate. The project is based upon the application of currently available technology, and in-mine testing results from the first phase are now available.

INTRODUCTION The Idarado mine lies high in the San Juan Moun¬tains on the divide between the Uncompahgre and San Miguel Rivers and consists of a consolidation of a number of old and prominent mining properties through which course some famous and very produc¬tive veins. Among the better known are the Smuggler, Tomboy, Montana-Argentine, Black Bear, Liberty Bell, Virginius, Flat, Barstow, and Japan, as well as many others. Most of these veins have been extensively mined over the past century and in the last three decades the Montana-Argentine and Black Bear veins have been the backbone of the Idarado mine; therefore, the descrip¬tion of the veins is limited to them. Access to the mine is through either the Treasury tunnel, whose portal is below Red Mountain Pass on US Highway 550 at an elevation of 3244 m (10,643 ft), or the Mill Level tunnel entrance 3.2 km (2 miles) east of Telluride, CO, at an elevation of 2761 m (9060 ft). The Treasury tunnel intersects the Black Bear vein 2643 m (8670 ft) from the portal and the Mill Level tunnel intersects the Argentine vein 2179 m (7150 ft) from the portal. Mining is by shrinkage stoping from slusher sublevels. The size of the scope blocks varies somewhat, but the standard size is 67 to 76 m (220 to 250 ft) long and 61 to 76 m (200 to 250 ft) high. The mine ranks either first or second in Colorado in yearly production of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc. It is 9.6 km (6 miles) from the Red Mountain plant to the Pandora plant, via interconnecting drifts and raises. There are engineering offices at both plants as a matter of convenience. The Red Mountain plant in¬cludes the company general offices, warehouse, carpen¬ter and machine shops, and mine change room. The Pandora plant consists of the mill and assay office, ma¬chine shops, and mine change room. The flotation mill has a capacity of 1632 t/d (1800 stpd), making a bul¬lion product and separate concentrates of lead, copper, and zinc. HISTORY OF THE MINE The Montana-Argentine vein was first extensively worked by the Tomboy Gold Mines Co., Ltd., a British concern. This company mined the stoped areas above the Ophir level between 1910 and the late 1920s and most of the stoped areas above the 2100 level between 1900 and the late 1920s. Gold was the principal ore metal mined. The area between the Revenue and Ophir levels was mined chiefly by the Revenue Mines Co. between 1900 and 1910. The ore was worked from the Revenue tun¬nel, which portals in Canyon Creek. Gold and silver were the chief metals recovered. The stopes between the 1700 and Revenue levels, as well as some higher stopes, were mined by Telluride Mines Inc. during the 1940s. The Mill Level tunnel was driven by that company from 1945 to 1948. Lead and zinc then became economically more important than the precious metals. In 1953, Idarado purchased Telluride Mines, which merged with the parent company in 1956. The Black Bear vein was first extensively worked by the Black Bear Mining Co. in the 1900s and by the Colorado Superior Mining Co. from about 1914 until snowslides at the mine camp [altitude 3750 m (12,300 ft)] terminated the company's operations in 1924. Leasers operated at intervals until 1934. The Treasury tunnel, formerly the Hammond tunnel, had been started before 1900 and reached the 1646-m (5400-ft) mark early in the 1900s, at which time activity lagged until the late 1930s. In the early 1940s, Idarado extended the Treasury tunnel from its heading at 1646 m (5400 ft) to the Black Bear vein and established a raise connec¬tion with the 600 level, the lowest level in the old mine. Since completion of initial work in the mid-1940s, systematic development of the mine, both in the driv¬ing of new headings and the utilization of older open¬ings, has resulted in the present extensive network of workings. GEOLOGY Introduction The oldest rocks of the area are the Precambrian metamorphic rocks, the Uncompahgre formation which are massive quartzites, some phyllites and slates, and dolomitic or limestone beds. West-dipping Paleozoic and Mesozoic strata lie on the Uncompahgre formation. These units are separated by a major angular uncomformity from overlying, essentially horizontal, Tertiary formations that include the basal Telluride conglomerate and several thousand feet of overlying volcanic rock. Intrusive rocks, mostly Tertiary in age, are common in the area, and are in the form of dikes, stocks, and sills. Dikes are very closely associated with some of the ore veins (Mayer). Description of Veins The Black Bear and Argentine veins range from 0.6 to 7.6 m (2 to 25 ft) in width, but in most places are 1.5 to 2 m (5 to 7 ft) wide. They vary in character from a well-defined tabular structure between sharp "frozen" walls, or gouge seams, to an irregular zone of quartz and quartz-sulfide stringers. Many gouge seams within the veins make the veins blocky and loose. Common gangue minerals in the veins include quartz, pyrite, rhodonite, chlorite, sericite, clay minerals, epidote, calcite, adularia, rhodocrosite, fluorite, and specularite. Quartz constitutes 60 to 70% of the veins and varies widely in character, ranging in color from clear through white, gray, and green, to amethyst. Chlorite, sericite, the clay minerals, and fine-grained quartz are common alteration products of the vein walls and of wall rock fragments in the veins.
