"In Crossrail’s Farringdon station, compensation grouting was successfully utilized to mitigate the surface settlements induced by the tunneling works. The main focus of this study was the platform tunnels, which were approximately 300m long each and were enlarged to platform size using sequential excavation method (SEM) from the existing TBM running tunnels, initially supported using sprayed concrete linings. The rear grouting injections were carried out at a typical distance of minimum 5m above the completed, fully strengthened shotcrete lining hence inducing some additional stresses. In-tunnel monitoring using surveying targets was performed systematically to ensure that no excessive distortion of the initial shotcrete lining occurred. 3D finite element analyses were utilized to back calculate the actual “effective” pressure that was imposed on the completed shotcrete rings against the additional measured in-tunnel displacements due to the compensation grouting episodes. Additionally an assessment of the theoretical, “maximum” allowable grouting pressures that would lead to overstressing of the lining is presented. INTRODUCTION As part of the back analysis performed for the SEM tunnels in Farringdon station, an investigation of the effect of compensation grouting on the two constructed platform tunnels was undertaken. The platform tunnels were 10.6m high by 11.4m wide and approximately 300m long each. They were enlarged to their final shape from the existing TBM tunnels using SCL methods. This study utilized 2D and 3D finite element (FE) analyses in order to back calculate the observed tunnel crown displacement, assessing the equivalent grouting pressures during the rear injection episodes of the concurrent grouting operations. The results provide a useful reference for the order of magnitude of the grouting pressure load cases that can be applied in the numerical simulation of similar cases. The literature contains several references to the influence of copper solvent extraction reagents on crud formation, but, there is disagreement as to whether the reagent has an influence on crud generation. The results of three pilot plant campaigns, where crud generation was studied as a function of the copper solvent extraction reagent, are reported. These pilot plants were run at operating copper solvent extraction plants using the aqueous solutions being treated by the commercial copper solvent extraction plants. Two of the pilot plant studies showed that the copper solvent extraction reagent had a significant influence on the extent of crud formation while the other pilot plant study indicated the copper solvent extraction reagent had a lesser influence on crud generation.

"Hecla Limited is nearing completion of the Lucky Friday Mine No.4 shaft located in Mullan, ID. The shaft is collared at the 4940 level of the mine and will have a final mine level depth of 8620, or 9,590 feet below the surface. After reaching the 7400 mine level the shaft encountered ground deformation higher then allowed for in the design for a circular shaft excavation and concrete lining. This additional ground deformation required portions of the shaft concrete liner to be reinforced with frameless, steel liner plate. To eliminate the installation of the liner plate from the remaining shaft development, the design of the shaft excavation starting at the 7650 mine level was changed to an elliptical cross section based on the overall stress field orientation as well as the orientation of the structure of the host rock surrounding the shaft. The elliptical cross section was instrumented to confirm the shaft excavation and lining was performing as designed. This design change has allowed the shaft to continue to the planned 8620 mine level without the need to install liner plate in the shaft or change the overall functionality of the shaft or the Lucky Friday life of mine plan.INTRODUCTION Hecla’s Lucky Friday Mine is a deep, underground producer of silver, lead and zinc in the Coeur d’Alene mining district of northern Idaho (Figure 1). Primary access into the mine is via the Silver Shaft, a 5.5-m (18-ft) diameter, concrete lined shaft sunk to an original depth of 1,890-m (6,200-ft). Current production is from the Gold Hunter vein system, approximately 1,525-m (5,000-ft) northwest of the Silver Shaft.Lucky Friday’s #4-Shaft is a 5.5-m (18-ft) finished diameter, internal shaft, or winze, being sunk to the north of the Gold Hunter vein system, from the mine’s 4760 level, 1,743-m (5,720-ft) below the surface, to the 8620 level, 2,923-m (9,590-ft) below the surface. The shaft is designed to provide access to the deep, high-grade zones of the Gold Hunter in order to increase the mine’s production and operational life. Design and engineering began in 2006, with construction starting in the fourth quarter of 2009."

INTRODUCTION A very important factor in froth flotation is the use of surface-active chemicals to form a froth in which minerals or coals are retained, thus allowing for valuable component enrichment. In coal flotation reagents (frothers) specifically designed to provide an efficient froth are employed. It is this group of chemicals that will be the primary emphasis of this paper. Despite the importance of frothers, surprisingly little systematic scientific work has been performed with the goal of quantifying frother mechanisms and the influence of particles on froth stability. Based on direct experimental observations in both batch laboratory and continuous large-scale flotation cells, the use of a frother significantly increases first, the possibility of a particle- bubble contact, and second, the efficiency of sticking after such a contact. Thus, a major role of a frother is to significantly increase the rate of flotation. This rate modification by a surface-active agent occurs through several observable mechanisms including the formation of a froth of relatively consistent character (bubble size and bubble density) under a variety of operational conditions, an increase in the ability to disperse air in the flotation cell, a reduction in the rate of coalescence of individual bubbles in the cell, and a decrease in the rate of bubble rise to the pulp surface. It will not be the intention of this paper to exhaustively list all frother accomplishments related to research, development and use in coal flotation. Rather, the authors will attempt, based on their experience, to present a technology overview of the role of frothers in the chemistry of flotation as successfully practiced at the industrial level. A very useful framework for flotation is the concept suggested by Klimpel (1984, 1984a) of viewing flotation as a system consisting of three major components: chemistry, equipment and operating variables. This is illustrated in Figure 1. A major point of this figure is that flotation is a highly interactive system with many technical and economic combinations of component settings available to operators to achieve a given goal. Sometimes simultaneously changing various component settings will reinforce a particular attribute. Also various component settings can cancel or counteract each other if changes are not chosen wisely. Thus, coal flotation must be viewed by the plant operator as a complex system with the economic/technical optimization of a given flotation process being directly related to the operator's knowledge of how his particular flotation system behaves as a function of the major control variables he has at his disposal. Typical important component settings in coal flotation are collector dosage, frother type and dosage, air flow rate, feed rate, particle size, pulp density, and the surface oxidation conditions of the coal. Because of the above complexities, it is sometimes assumed (especially in laboratory studies) that the choice of frother type and dosage is not as crucial as some of the other factors such as collector type and dosage (e.g., Leja, 1982). Detailed plant level testing of all of the factors of Figure 1 performed in recent years, Klimpel (1980, 1980a, 1982, 1984, 1984a), Hansen (19861, Klimpel, Hansen and Meyer (1982), simply do not support this assumption. The above testing has shown rather clearly that certain frother chemical structures consistently exhibit predictable performance characteristics in both mineral and coal flotation. In addition, significant changes in both rate and recovery can be expected. In the remaining sections of this paper, the following topics will be covered: requirements of chemicals capable of use as frothers, types of chemicals used commercially as frothers, some general performance characteristics of existing commercial frothers, and recent work in developing new frother chemical structures.

The study of flotation kinetics was first reported by Garcia-Zuniga1 in 1935. Since then, literature on the subject has grown with the time. 2-19 Although there is an abundance of flotation kinet¬ics models available in the literature to describe flo¬tation systems, they are mostly of academic interest and are seldom applicable for use in the industrial environment. Several reasons contribute to the wide gap in the industrial -application of the academic models. These include: 1) the lack of generality in the model, e.g., the model is limited to certain size ranges; 14 2) the academic models involve complicated mathematics; 5,6,10,11 3) confusion about the order of the flo¬tation rate, e.g., several authors proposed a first order rate model, 1,15,16 whereas the others propagated a second order rate model: 2,17,18,194) the use of an unrealistic rigid value, such as the use of a maximum recovery of 100%, 5,8,19 which is unrealistic in industrial operations; and 5) the use of graphs that confuse the reader rather than interpret information. 2,3,10 This paper intends to introduce a simple and easy to understand empirical flotation kinetics model along with a way of presenting the model in an informative graphical form, which should stimulate the interest of other practical engineers to become concerned with practical application within the mineral industry.

For the past 50 years, the primary crushing of stone at the Dolase Bros. Co. Richards Spur Quarry. 13 miles north of Lawton, Oklahoma, has been accomplished by a Traylor 42-inch gyratory crusher. The production capacity of the primary system, consisting of a feeder, grizzly, and the gyratory crusher, was approximately 2100 tons per hour. Shot-down scone was hauled from the working face about one mile to the feeder by a fleet of Caterpillar Model 773's and WABCO 60- and 65-ton trucks. In order to maintain production, nine to ten trucks and four Caterpillar Model 992 front-end loaders were required to be operational at all times.

"Understanding the airflow patterns in and around the longwall panel can help to identify poorly ventilated areas that may be prone to methane accumulation. Ventilation network modeling provides quick simulation time, and flexibility in adjusting airway parameters and ventilation controls. Such modeling is effective for analyzing linear ventilation networks in underground mines, but cannot compute flows in caved areas of hard rock mines or longwall gobs. The use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) enables a more detailed investigation of the interaction between the airflows in these caved areas but requires much longer computational times, designing complex meshes and determination of a variety of modeling parameters. Airway friction factors and ventilation controls are simple to implement in a network model but can be difficult to model and adjust in CFD. This paper will focus on using mine ventilation network simulation to identify and analyze key parameters that are affecting airflow distribution in and around the longwall panels, prior to more detailed analysis with CFD modeling, using the example of a longwall coal mine. INTRODUCTION In longwall coal mine ventilation systems common in the U.S., the main purpose of bleeder ventilation is to dilute methane gas and prevent the formation of explosive gas mixtures in the caved, poorly ventilated gob areas and adjacent mine workings. In longwall operation, these critical areas include the development headings inby the longwall face, and the gob. Methane-air explosions in these areas may be ignited by spontaneous combustion, rock-on-rock friction and other sources. Although rare, ignitions due to rock-on-rock friction caused by roof falls caving into the longwall gob are possible and were suspected in the Willow Creek mine explosions in 1998 and 2000 (Elkins et al., 2001; McKinney et al., 2001). Rock-on-rock frictional ignitions are difficult to prevent, as they occur in inaccessible areas. Therefore, rendering the gob area inert is essential to prevent the formation of explosive mixtures. Research by Gilmore et al. (2015) and Brune et al. (2015) has shown that gob inertization can be a difficult or impossible when using bleeder systems, since the flow of gases through the gob depends on the gob permeability and the amount of fresh air leaking from the face and the immediate roof caving conditions cannot be controlled by the mine operator. Having the ability to predict the location where explosive gas zones (EGZs) form inside the gob will be helpful for designing the best ventilation setup to minimize explosion and fire risks."

The White Pine Mine is the second-largest active underground copper mine in the United States, covering an area of approximately 13 square miles in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The mine operator intends to initiate in-stope solution mining by circulating a solution of mine water, sulfuric acid, and ferric iron through rubblized ore and recovering copper from solution. As planned, the solution would be retired in the mined-out stopes following completion of solution mining activities. Investigations into the fate of the retired solution mining fluid indicate that the solution, through time, will change from an acidic, metal-rich solution to a near-neutral, reducing solution containing much lower concentrations of metals. Investigations include reaction path modeling (EQ3/6) and laboratory and in-mine experiments. The combination of neutralization and reduction will result in precipitation of most metals, primarily as metallic sulfates, chlorides, and sulfides.

This paper describes the scientific data acquisition, data interpretation, and sophisticated 3-dimensional modeling processes of an ongoing gas well stability research program by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Results from the NIOSH field instrumentation programs and the parallel 3-dimensional numerical modeling programs indicate that overburden depth, overburden geology, surface topographic relief, strata dip of the coal measure rocks, and casing cementing alternatives are the dominant factors affecting longwall-induced subsurface deformations and gas well casing stresses. Topographic relief could produce localized longwall-induced deformations if weak-to-strong rock interfaces are present near the bottom of stream valleys. Strata dip has significant impact on longwall-induced subsurface deformations. Cementing alternatives are found to have significant impacts on longwall-induced deformations and gas well casing stresses.

Alkaline pressure oxidation (POX) is an oxidative pre-treatment option that is commercially used for high-carbonate sulfidic gold ores. The high carbonate grades within the feed ore shifts the ideal operating pH to a basic regime. Compared with acidic POX, alkaline POX typically requires additional steam input due to a lower sulfur oxidation load and a high rate of in-situ carbon dioxide generation that needs to be vented along with steam. The cost of this steam addition is the largest differentiator between acid POX operation and alkaline POX from a cost comparison. However, alkaline POX can offset these costs through reduced acid usage for pre-acidulation and decreased alkali reagent consumption for subsequent neutralization. This paper reviews the specific operating cost impacts of acid/base consumption between alkaline and acidic POX with ores which require pre-acidulation, the overall economics of alkaline POX, and the regimes in which alkaline POX is economically favorable. The findings aim to guide industry professionals in making informed decisions for alkaline POX adoption by providing a summary view of its operational benefits and costs, contributing to the development of cost-effective and sustainable gold ore processing techniques.

The dining industry game tome Spruce Pine area a few years after tine Civil War. Two Yankees came down from Massachusetts to mine sheet mica to sell to the stove manufacturers for windows in heating stoves. At this time the method of mining was very crude; it was done only with pick and shovel. They were mining mica from the soft veins. Later they progressed to hand grilling and blasting. Hand drilling was quite an art in the area. One man would hold and turn the steel while one or two other men would drive the steel with hammers. In shaft raining, the muck and water was removed by hand winches called windlasses. About 1920 air compressors and jack hammers came into use. These were perhaps tide greatest improvement that has ever come to the area's mining industry. Later carne gasoline hoists, air drive water pumps, and all electrical equipment. Mica mining has, for the past few years, been very modern and efficient.

This paper focuses on the use of a numerical tool known as the discrete element method (DEM) to study the motion of ball charge in ball mills (14-18 ft). DEM is employed to simulate the motion of individual balls. While doing so, the effect of liner design on the grinding performance of the mill is studied. Two important factors such as the configuration of the liner and the geometry of the lifting surfaces are correlated with the overall mill performance. An attempt is made to show the effectiveness of the lifter bars in transmitting power from the mill shell to the interior of the mill with particular emphasis to large diameter mills.

In this work, we propose to implement machine learning methods for the automatic classification of mining-related seismic data. The approach retained for the classification is based on a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) which has been tested and applied to two different mining datasets: the active ore mine of Garpenberg (Sweden), currently under exploitation, and the abandoned coal mine of Gardanne (France), where mining stopped in 2003. The first step of the approach consists in creating a well classified (manually) database of seismic signals separated in different classes as a function of the seismic sources. The selected database is then divided into two groups: train, containing the 70% of the signals, and test, which contains the remaining 30% of the signals within the selected database. The learning phase of the algorithm consists in creating a classification model based on the train group, which is further validated on the test group. The application of CNN for the automatic classification of Garpenberg and Gardanne seismic data shows, respectively, that about 88% and 98% of the seismic events of the two sites can be properly classified. These results demonstrate that machine learning could be a powerful tool for microseismic monitoring in mining and post-mining environments, which could be further extended to the whole automatic processing of seismic data, including signal’s classification as well as microseismic event’s localization.

The destabilizing effect of water pressure on rock mass stability is examined quantitatively by the finite element method. A coupled code that accounts for the simultaneous effects of rock mass deformation and transient fluid flow is used for this purpose. The traditional soil mechanics assumption of an incompressible fluid is shown to be untenable for the analysis of porous, fractured rock slopes. A Mandel-Cryer effect, a transitory but elevated and potentially destabilizing water pressure following a cut, was not observed.

Ground control analysis and groundwater inflow assessments for underground coal mines require in-depth field investigations including, but not limited to, geological and geotechnical core logging, downhole geophysical logging, laboratory rock strength testing, and packer (Lugeon) testing. Field and laboratory data collection are time consuming and expensive, and an initial understanding of the expected trends among various geotechnical and hydrogeological parameters can assist with the planning and optimization of geotechnical characterization studies and grouting plans. In this study, a comprehensive database is analyzed, comprised of important rock mass characteristics (hydraulic conductivity, rock quality designation (RQD), and lithology) for coal-bearing rocks in the Central Appalachian Basin. Statistical analysis of the data is completed to establish an enhanced understanding of geotechnical and hydrogeological conditions expected to be encountered as underground coal mining passes near and beneath streams and rivers. The results of the study provide valuable reference material for the coal mining industry for completion of shaft installations, mine stream crossings, environmental assessments, and grouting and mine dewatering designs.

The ability to process complex precious metal sulfide concentrates containing antimony and arsenic in an economic and environmentally safe manner is an important problem facing the mining industry in the United States. Preliminary experiments have been performed to evaluate the possibility of treating a complex sulfide concentrate to recover antimony and precious metals while fixing the arsenic and sulfur as calcium arsenate and calcium sulfate. The process involves: • the oxidation of the antimony and arsenic minerals in the presence of soda ash (to collect the sulfur dioxide and to keep the antimony and arsenic from forming volatile compounds), •the selective leaching of the arsenic from the roast calcine with a heated caustic solution, •the precipitation of the arsenic and sulfate with calcium hydroxide and/or calcium chloride, •the reduction of the residual antimony (collecting the precious metals), •fuming of the metal to form a marketable antimony oxide, and •crucible reduction of the residue to obtain a gold and silver dore. Batch experiments, using synthetic concentrates of stibnite and arsenopyrite, were performed to evaluate the first stage of this process. Variables studied included mixture weight fractions, temperature, gas flow rate, oxygen partial pressure, and time. All of the off gas dust and sulfur containing gases were collected and analyzed. The roast solid residues were subjected to arsenic leach tests, and the leach solutions were subjected to arsenic and sulfate precipitation tests. Introduction The ability to treat a precious metal ore containing appreciable amounts of antimony and arsenic is dependent upon the characteristics of the ore. For some ores, selective flotation can be used to separate the antimony and arsenic minerals, which are then treated separately. Unfortunately, many ores are not treatable in this way, and the concentrates obtained may contain appreciable contamination (which limits the ability to make acceptable grade antimony products). If we consider the added value of the precious metals in the concentrate, then it is worthwhile to evaluate the potential for new methods to treat these types of concentrates. In addition, the environmental difficulties associated with arsenic disposal must be taken into account in any proposed process. If there is appreciable arsenic present, then it must be either recovered as a marketable product or placed in an insoluble form. The problem addressed in this research program has become increasingly important as the precious metals mining industry is encountering more ores of this type. A large deposit of this type exists in Idaho where the antimony occurs primarily as stibnite, with minor amounts of kermesite and tetrahedrite (Cooper, 1951). The gold appears in association with arsenopyrite with minor amounts of other arsenic minerals. Flotation has been used to obtain an antimony concentrate. The concentrate, however, is contaminated with appreciable amounts of arsenic and also contains precious metals. If the ore or concentrate contains appreciable amounts of base metals, then the recovery process becomes much more difficult. There are a number of other known deposits of this type in Alaska, Canada, Montana and elsewhere. The objective of this research program was to develop a fundamental understanding of the oxidation and leaching chemistry of the arsenic and antimony minerals so that technology may be developed to treat these ores in an economic and environmentally safe manner. Wendt (1949) and Koster and Royer (1940) discussed the possibilities of oxidative roasting of stibnite concentrates containing arsenic. Wendt describes a process used at a smelter in Czechoslovakia (in the 1930s) where roasting was carried out in rotary furnaces at 723° K (500° C). Most of the arsenic was removed as fume, as well as 25% of the antimony. No sulfur dioxide containment was described. The oxide fume from the furnace went to a heated caustic water leach, where the arsenic was preferentially dissolved and then precipitated with calcium chloride as calcium arsenate following solid-liquid separation. The antimony oxide was sold, and the solid oxide discharge from the rotary furnace was sent to a blast furnace where the antimony metal, containing the precious metals, was recovered. INTRODUCTION Large areas of the United States coal reserves have been undermined by room-and-pillar mining over the past century. These abandoned mines generally cause subsidence of the ground surface many decades after mining. Reports from England (1) where there is a longer history of room-and-pillar mining indicate that mines abandoned two centuries ago may still be causing subsidence, and causing surface destruction to urban areas or farm lands that have been developed in the interim. The devastation wrought by subsidence, both in terms of property loss and societal disruption is enormous. The authors discuss here the methods by which subsidence in abandoned mines may be controlled. Two distinctly different subsidence control technologies have been developed in the U.S. for abandoned coal mines. These are referred to as (1) Point Sup- port methods, and (2) Areal Backfilling. As the names imply, point support methods are used to protect individual structures, or even individual foundation elements of structures, whereas areas backfilling techniques may be applied to protect entire neighborhoods or urban districts hundreds of acres in extent. Both point support methods and areal backfilling have specific sub-categories of techniques that may be applied under different conditions as appropriate. POINT SUPPORT METHODS Point support methods are characteristically employed by civil engineers chartered with the design of a new structure or the protection of an existing structure. The subsidence control measures are only a part of a larger project, the safety of which must be assured to a degree of near certainty. The costs of point support methods involve a large number of bore-holes and the use of expensive materials in relatively small quantities. There exist several dozen point support methods, which operate either to support the underground cavities, controlling subsidence, or to isolate the structure from the effects of subsidence if it should occur. The latter methods usually involve deep foundations through the mine opening supporting the structure on the underlying strata. Our concern will be with the former method to support underground cavities to prevent subsidence. Gravel Columns and Associated Methods Gravel columns may be placed in the mine opening using the methods shown in [Figure 1]. Boreholes are drilled through the mine strata, and gravel poured down the borehole to form a pile on the mine floor. When the tip of the pile contacts the mine roof, it is rodded down to spread the pile, and permit additional gravel to be placed. The objective is to place as much gravel as possible in the mine opening, and to achieve firm contact with the mine roof. The gravel pile acts to reduce subsidence by three mechanisms. The filling of a significant fraction of the open mine volume reduces the amount of potential subsidence simply by killing open volume within the mine. In effect, the extraction ratio has been reduced by introducing the volume of gravel. The toe of the gravel pile abuts against nearby pillars, providing lateral support and protection against pillar deterioration. In effect, the height of the pillars has been slightly reduced by burying their lower portions. Finally, some direct support is provided to the roof strata, reducing the roof span and enhancing stability. The gravel column method may be used in a variety of applications, and with materials other than gravel. For example, gravel columns may be placed in a close line around the perimeter of the building to form a continuous gravel wall. The interior of the site may then be completely filled with sand, slurry or other material. Alternatively, a lean concrete may be used in place of gravel, so that the piles achieve significant structural capacity. The grout column, shown in [Figure 2], begins with the installation of a conventional gravel column which is placed around a grout pipe that extends through the borehole into the mine opening. When the gravel column is in place, portland cement grout is injected in stages. At each stage, sufficient grout is injected to fill the interstices in the gravel to build a column perhaps two meters in diameter and a meter tall. Paper and paperboard manufacturers need to quantify the carbon footprint and environmental impact of their products to satisfy market, social and government demands. Coated paper products contain minerals, such as kaolin and calcium carbonate, at significant levels; some coated paper grades have mineral contents as high as 45% by weight. Some uncoated paper has no mineral content, but most uncoated paper contains some mineral to improve appearance, process efficiency and cost. Super-calendared paper grades can contain levels of mineral up to 35% by weight. This paper describes how to calculate the carbon footprint of kaolin and calcium carbonate minerals used for white pigments. The carbon footprint of these minerals strongly correlates to the primary energy sources, final product form and energy used to calcine kaolin and lime. Kaolin and calcium carbonate pigments have a favorable impact on the carbon footprint of paper and paperboard products by directly substituting for fiber and by reducing the energy needed for paper making.
