Lead alloys function effectively as oxygen evolving anodes in copper SX-EW operations and are highly resistant to corrosion. The presence of organic from solvent extraction in the electrolyte seemed to enhance solution line attack. Laboratory tests showed that lead is soluble in D2EHPA, Acorga and LIX 984 to a limited, yet measurable degree. Lead alloys and various lead phases formed on the anode were tested to evaluate their effect on the corrosion process in organic media. Possible causes for anode corrosion and mechanisms responsible for their initiation will be discussed.

The Jerritt Canyon Joint Venture project is located approximately 50 miles (80 km) north of Elko. Nevada, U.S.A. and produces between 250 and 300 thousand ounces of gold annually. The Joint Venture is 70% owned by Independence Mining Company and 30% owned by Meridian Gold Company. Independence Mining Company is the operator. The Jerrin Canyon Joint Venture started operations in 1980 mining a series of open pit mines. Since the early 1990's, the discovery of deeper ores has required the joint venture to develop and mine a significant portion of its annual production utilizing underground mining methods. Underground production started with the West Generator Mine in 1993 followed by the Murray Mine in late 1994. Presently, two additional underground projects are being developed. Underground mining at Jerritt Canyon is budgeted to produce 128 thousand ounces in 1997. This paper documents the major transition/redevelopment of the Jerritt Canyon mining methods.

The advantages of recirculation of air in underground mines have been well recognized, and several papers have been written on the subject. Issues of concern to the various segments of the mining industry relate to the health and safety of workers, specifically, methane and respirable dust build-up in the air, high humidity and temperature at the work face. This paper presents a survey of various studies pertaining to recirculation as a prelude to the experimental and quantitative studies performed by the authors. Experiments were performed at a trona mine on the transportation and deposition of dust along the return airways, for three different velocities. Modeling studies were performed using dust deposition models. The model predicted data were compared with experimental data in order to lay the foundation for the development of advanced predictor models for recirculation in trona mines. Two models for dust deposition were analyzed. The model predicted data are in divergence from the experimental data, indicating the need to develop better models.

A three-dimension two-phase (air and dust) computer model was developed to model air velocity and respirable dust distributions in the longwall faces. This paper describes the derivation of the model including the model features, mathematical equations and boundary conditions. Example simulations were also performed for two longwall faces where measured respirable dust and air velocity distributions were available. The results indicated the model can simulate the mine conditions fairly accurately.

Dynatec Mining Limited contracted to sink a 1500 metre (4960 ft.) concrete lined shaft for Falconbridge Nickel Mines in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. The shaft is 6.3 metres (20.5 ft) in diameter inside the concrete lining and is equipped with steel furnishings. Dynatec used the owner supplied 4.6 metre (15 ft.) diameter double-drum hoist to sink the shaft with 12.5 tonne buckets for muck removal and 4 cubic metre concrete buckets for concrete placement. One of the unique features of the shaft sinking operation is the use of a four-boom electric hydraulic drill jumbo permanently mounted in the shaft sinking stage. This paper will describe the performance obtained with the electric hydraulic drilling equipment and the high capacity muck removal and concreting equipment.

INTRODUCTION The concern of occupational exposure to diesel exhaust pollutants is an important workplace issue for the mining industry. During the last three decades of diesel operations at Inco, a significant amount of research and improvement has been made in the area of work environment, and effective diesel operation. This paper will review the experience gained by Inco's Ontario Division from the implementation and the use of modern engines, improved fuel quality, and the exhaust control technology, coupled with adherence to proper maintenance and ventilation design and practices. Past monitoring practices and the current occupational monitoring program at lnco are outlined. A major new research initiative involving multi-stake holders in diesel performance is described. MINING IN THE SUDBURY AREA The discovery of nickel-copper ore in the Sudbury area dates back to the year 1856. The existence of this orebody was noticed when a strong compass deflection was observed by a provincial surveyor. This discovery, even though documented in official re- ports, failed to arouse any public attention at that time. In 1884, a rock-cut was blasted through a small hill near the village of Sudbury to permit laying track for the Canadian Pacific Railway (Boldt 1967). The rock-cut uncovered a body of massive sulfides with a copper content of over nine percent. The mineralization is concentrated along the outer margin of the Sudbury Basin, an oval-shaped structure having a dimension of 55 x 95 kilometres. The ore extends down-dip to to at least 3000 metres below the surface. The mining methods at lnco can be divided into two categories: "filled-stope" and 'bulk" mining. This division, in the broad sense, may also reflect the environmental conditions of the mine. In the past, the selection of a mining method was based on the size, shape, grade and the strength of the ore and its surroundings. The recent development of improved technology and mining equipment permitted wider application of low cost bulk mining methods. UNDERGROUND DIESEL EQUIPMENT The first diesel-powered machine, a 145-horsepower scooptram, was put into operation in March 1966, in a cut-and-fill stoping complex at Frood Mine. The number of diesel machines underground in the Inco, Ontario Division, mines was increased to 360 units by 1971,550 in 1977 (Rutherford 1978), and over 830 diesel-powered units in 1995. The following list indicates current mobile diesel equipment. LHD 194 Loaders 81 Trucks 28 Jumbo Drills 78 Personnel Carrier 101 Service Equipment 155 Locomotives 50 Bolters 30 Scissor Lift 113 About 20 percent of the LHD and truck units are equipped with electronic fuel controlled engines. COMPOSITION OF DIESEL EXHAUST Diesel exhaust contains hundreds of pollutants (Watts 19921, including components of unburned fuel and lubricating oil and products of incomplete combustion of the fuel and oil. These pollutants are emitted either as gases or as particles. Gaseous pollutants include carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur ox- ides, as well as a variety of organic compounds, such as hydro- carbons, aldehydes, and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons. The particle phase, also known as diesel particulate matter (DPM), is the filterable portion of diesel exhaust. Figure 1 depicts the trimodal particle size distribution that arises from different mechanisms of aerosol generation (Cantrell and Rubow 1992). Primary combustion aerosols, including diesel exhaust aerosol, are formed as very small particles (in the 0.001 to 0.08 micrometre range), but physical mechanisms such as condensation and coagulation quickly transfer the aerosol mass from the nuclei mode to the accumulation mode. These processes result in a mass median diameter of approximately 0.2 micrometres for diesel particulate matter, and 90% of the particles are less than 1.0 micrometre in size. These particles have a high surface area, permitting the adsorption of different substances produced during combustion. Mechanically generated aerosols, on the other hand, typically contain particles greater than 1 micrometre in diameter. The particle phases of diesel exhaust contain three components (Bagley, et al, 1996) shown by Figure 2, namely: a carbon- aceous fraction composed mainly of solid-carbon particles, a sulfate fraction containing small hydrated sulfate particles, and a soluble fraction that contains compounds that are soluble in organic solvents and are adsorbed or condensed onto carbon core particles. These compounds consist primarily of higher molecular weight hydrocarbons and PAH's and may contribute 15% to 45% of the weight of the total particulate matter (Schuetzle, 1983). The control of these pollutants is necessary to ensure a healthy work environment. The Umuna epithermal precious metal deposit has provided the target for a simulated rock geochemistry exploration program, directed at bedrock exposed in the drainage system of eastern Misima Island. A geochemical halo to the deposit is readily recognised in the mafic meta-volcanic country rock. This halo is defined by anomalous results for both major (K, Na, Ca, Mg) and minor (Au, As, Sb, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ba, Rb, Sr, Cs, Bi, Ga, S) element geochemistry, extending further than 1km from the deposit. Such halos are sufficiently extensive to provide adequate exploration targets in the search for epithermal mineralisation, complementing mineralogic and secondary media geochemical investigations.

Dupont has successfully incorporated a Floatex Density Separator into its wet-gravity operations for the recovery of zircon from titanium tailings. Results indicate that the Floatex achieved a zircon recovery of approximately 95% while rejecting similar amounts of quartz and other gangue minerals. Additionally, a unit capacity approaching 16 tonnes/hr/m2 was achieved. Results also show that the alumino-silicates can be separated into other product streams that will further improve process economics and minimize waste material. The improved plant feed grade provided by the Floatex has allowed for either an increase in overall plant capacity and/or final product grade. This paper will present the findings from the in-plant study.

For over thirty years the Population Balance Model, PBM, has been the mainstream modeling method for comminution unit operations and comminution circuits. For commercial comminution circuits the method is based on erroneous physics and dubious numerical mathematical methods leading to non unique solutions that have little extrapolative value and faulty control strategies. In short the PBM is wrong. Given is a detailed analysis showing a number of non trivial flaws in the linear PBM. Moreover, a simpler model is presented that leads to a solution of the comminution circuit predicting the size distribution output over a variety of conditions. Because the linear PBM is firmly entrenched, an award is offered, $10,000, to any researcher that can use the linear PBM and its present numerical methods to predict the typical straight line, self similar, output of wet mills over a variety of grinding times.

This paper describes practical applications of lineal" programming techniques to help in the planning of production, transportation and shipments at different coal mines. The models are being used by Cyprus Coal Company in eastern and western operations to plan coal production, economic dispatching and blending over variable time horizons. In addition, where a preparation plant exists, the models establish the amount of washing required to meet specific coal sales qualities. The emphasis on this paper is on model development and implementation together with a system to track coal flow and qualities, either raw from the mines to the loading facilities 01" processed through a preparation plant.

The close-multiple coal seam is an important component of China’s coal resources and plays a key role in total coal reserves. However, the overburden movement in the mining process of close-multiple coal seams is usually extensive, which is seriously affected by overmining. It is therefore essential to study the mechanism of roof breakage, the relationship between the shield and the surrounding rock, and the mechanism of overburden movement to ensure the safe operation and the efficient exploitation of close-multiple coal seams. This work first proposes a technical route for intelligent ground control. Second, the principle of cooperative control between the shield and overburden roof is revealed, and the shield support capacity calculation method is summarized. Third, the quantitative criterion for disturbance degree of key stratum (KSDD) is proposed based on the key strata theory. Finally, several intelligent evaluation and analysis systems have been developed in terms of overburden breakage and shield support capacity, multi-information analysis of ground control, and disturbance degree of overburden. The research results may provide an essential reference for the development of intelligent ground control in the mining process of close-multiple coal seams

The ninth annual Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) student poster contest was held in February at the SME Annual Conference & Expo in Minneapolis, MN. A total of 33 students presented their work at the contest. The competition began in January when the students submitted a one-page abstract for judging. In February, they prepared and presented a poster that explained their research. A panel of judges went to each student and listened as the students explained their research in five minutes. The students worked hard at their research and then set aside time to complete all the necessary steps to enter the contest. The MPD recognizes the effort required to enter and, as a result, provides monetary rewards to all participants. As in past years, there are separate levels of competition for undergraduates and graduates, and the prizes are designated accordingly. At the graduate level, first place receives $1,000, second place $500, third through seventh $200 each, and all others $125 each. At the undergraduate level, first place receives $1,000, second place $500, third place $250, and all others $125 each.

Dynatec Mining Ltd. contracted to sink a 1500-m (4920 ft) concrete-lined shaft for Falconbridge Nickel Mines in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. The shaft has an inside diameter of 6.3 m (20.5 ft) and is equipped with steel furnishings. Dynatec used the owner-supplied, 4.6-m (15.1 ft) diam, double-drum hoist to sink the shaft. For muck removal, 12.5¬t (13.8-st) buckets were used. The capacity of the concrete-¬placement buckets was 4.6 m3 (162.4 ft3). One of the unique features of the shaft sinking operation was the use of a two-¬boom, electric-hydraulic drill jumbo permanently mounted in the shaft sinking stage. An in-the-hole (ITH) drill was used to drill a 200-mm (8-in.) cut hole for the 4.8-m (16 ft), full face rounds. This paper describes the performance obtained with the electric-hydraulic drilling equipment and the high-capacity muck removal and concreting equipment.

The redesign and reinforcement of a highwall located adjacent to a $10,000,000 shopping center, destabilized by active subsidence, was conducted after an extensive geotechnical investigation. The highwall was excavated in a hillside where a coal seam had been retreat mined and augered. Engineering geological mapping, determination of the properties and behavior of the intact rock, fractured rock, and urethane grout material, and soil were required to characterize the highwall and conduct a stability analysis. Remedial measures included re-excavating portions of the highwall to reduce the slope angle, and pressure grouting of the immediate roof.

"The objective of this work is to validate a methodology for spatially predicting the fracture intensity, defined as the average fracture area per unit volume. First, using the observations from drill holes, the fracture intensity is directly inferred at the support of drill-hole composites based on a Terzaghi correction. Subsequently, the composite values are interpolated to larger blocks. The methodology is tested on sets of simulated fracture networks, in which each fracture consists of a disc with a random diameter, random position and random orientation. For each of these simulated networks, one can calculate the actual fracture intensity within any region of space, based on geometric considerations. A regular sampling mesh is then defined to emulate a set of vertical drill holes and the proposed methodology is applied to predict the fracture intensity, both globally and locally. The actual and predicted fracture intensities are finally compared, showing that predictions are unbiased, insofar as, on average, the prediction error is always close to zero. Also, the error dispersion increases when the support of the prediction decreases, which is consistent with the well-known support effect. In practice, the proposed methodology allows predicting fracture intensity based exclusively on drill-hole information, without the need for simulating fracture networks in space, hence its interest. INTRODUCTION The characterization of fractures in rock masses is an important part in the evaluation of mechanical and hydraulic properties of rocks. Fractures have a large impact in disciplines such as reservoir engineering, safety of underground storage of CO2 or of nuclear waste, assessment of high-enthalpy geothermal installations, safety of mining exploitations, efficiency of in-situ leaching operations or of extraction by block-caving. As a rock mass property, fractures must be characterized in the three-dimensional space, whereas observations are limited to 1D (drill holes) and 2D (outcrops, drift walls), moreover very often to rather short stations, so that the available data are subject to geometric bias, truncation and censoring. Fracture characteristics includes the number of fracture sets and, for each set, the number, orientation, spacing, location, shape and size of the fractures must be inferred from data sampling. Some important parameters that are considered nearly in all models are fracture intensity and fracture size."

The oxidants which participate in the bacterially catalyzed oxidation of minerals are dissolved oxygen and some aqueous iron(III) complexes. Speciation studies indicate that these complexes consist of iron (III) -sulfate and iron (III) -arsenate ions. The complexes have different oxidizing powers as indicated by their calculated standard reduction potentials. The thermodynamics of the oxidations of pyrite and arsenopyrite are related to the mechanisms of the reactions. The mechanisms are discussed in terms of primary processes occurring on the mineral surfaces and the secondary reactions of the primary products. The importance of the conclusions to plant operation is discussed.

"Man-Made Parameters" refers to the importance of selecting appropriate analytical procedures to acquire useful chemical data. The correct procedures are particularly critical at the sample preparation stage where decisions concerning pulverizing equipment, sample size, contamination and dissolution will impact on the final results independent of the instrumental method of analysis. Several experiments were designed to quantify the impact of these approaches.

"Chicago’s Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) is a nearly $4.0 billion and over 30 years long program and arguably the largest and longest combined sewer tunnel and reservoir system in the world. Recently, a massive tunnel construction is underway for connection of the McCook Reservoir to the existing TARP tunnel system. Once completed in two stages in 2017 and 2019, the reservoir will hold 38 billion-liters (10 billion-gallons) of combined sewer overflows (CSO) and flood waters from the city of Chicago and over 20 communities in Cook County, Illinois. McCook Main Tunnel will connect Chicago TARP’s Mainstream Tunnel to the McCook Reservoir. Connecting two 10-meter (33-ft) diameter tunnels at 92 meters (300 feet) underground has not been a simple task for the McCook Tunnel Project participants, the project owner U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), local sponsor Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) of Greater Chicago, designer Black & Veatch, and the contractor, Kiewit Infrastructure Company (Kiewit). Yet alone excavating and lining massive size tunnels, the team is also challenged with live tunnel conditions in TARP Mainstream Tunnel that carries CSO and flood flows from city of Chicago which runs full during rain events and must remain in service at all times. The project is a noteworthy feat for engineering and construction with the upcoming installation of world’s largest underground wheel gates for flow control within the tunnel. In this paper, we describe one of its kind elements of this major tunnel system along with key design and construction considerations, specifically for the live tunnel connection which is a rare occurrence in the tunneling industry. INTRODUCTION The McCook Main Tunnel system consists of a 10 m (33 ft) finished diameter and 490 m (1,600 ft) long hard rock tunnel constructed from a 27.5 m (90 ft) diameter and 92 m (300 ft) deep main gate and tunnel construction access shaft. The gate shaft houses six high head 4.4 m by 9 m (14.5 ft by 29.5 ft) wheel gates to be installed in the bifurcated and steel lined section of the tunnel. The tunnel also includes portal and energy dissipation structures as it daylights into the reservoir."

The effect of pulping reagents on the flotation de-inking of laser printed wastepaper was investigated with regard to the removal efficiency of toner and mineral filler particles for different pH values. These results show that caustic pulping causes the toner to be released from the fibers at larger particles sizes. On the other hand, acid pulping not only causes the toner to be released at smaller particles sizes but also increases the concurrent flotation removal of mineral filler particles. It was experimentally observed that the froth generation and stability during flotation were improved for acidic pH values.
