Luminex is a new method of prospecting for mineral deposits based on time-resolved mineral luminescence created by an ultra-violet light source. Developed by Scintrex Ltd., Luminex detects and resolves a group of key minerals - either ore minerals themselves or, more often, accessory or pathfinder minerals for certain types of economic ore deposits. These minerals are commonly found on the earth's surface, even in areas of considerable weathering. The method extends the range of mineral deposits that are remotely detectable from the air. Tungsten, tin, molybdenum, gold, and bedded lead-zinc deposits are included. Therefore, Luminex is a natural supplement to the three classical methods of airborne geophysics. The luminescence of minerals has been known and used qualitatively in mineral exploration for many years. But there are more than 500 minerals known to be at least sometimes luminescent. Luminescence of most is unpredictable and the colors they emit may vary from locale to locale. It is, perhaps, this apparent complexity of the field that has discouraged its proper scientific scale until now. There are two basic types of luminescent minerals - intrinsic and impurity activated. In the first type, luminescence is an inherent property of the mineral in its purest form. In the latter, luminescence is due to the introduction of foreign trace elements, often in very modest amounts (ppm), into the crystal lattice. These trace elements are known as activators. There are very few intrinsic luminescent minerals commonly found in nature. Chief among these are the calcium tungstatemolybdate family, more commonly known as the scheelite-powellite family, and the uranyl minerals such as autunite and saleeite. The vast majority of other known fluorescent minerals such as fluorite, hydrozincite, and many calcites, are impurity activated - that is, they will not fluoresce in purest form. In addition to the many minerals likely to luminesce at the earth's surface under ultraviolet excitation, any prospector who has ventured out at night with a mercury lamp will know that much organic matter luminesces - for example lichens and even scorpions. Just as the eye finds difficulty in resolving the luminescence of minerals from that of organic materials, it also has its limitations at sorting out minerals from one another by their luminescent colors. Figure 1 shows, in part, the photoluminescent emission spectra of scheelite, hydrozincite, and autunite. It is clear that there is a considerable similarity in spectrum between scheelite and hydrozincite and a great deal of overlap. In fact, a small amount of molybdenum in the scheelite lattice can almost bring these two spectra into coincidence. On the other hand, the autunite emission spectrum is clearly resolved from the other two. Basis of the Method The right-hand side of Fig. 1 shows the time waveforms of decay of the photoluminescence of the same three minerals. It is apparent that the lifetimes of photoluminescence of scheelite and hydrozincite are radically different and that these two minerals, therefore, may be readily resolved through their emission lifetime characteristics. It is in the realm of time-resolved measurements (lifetime characteristics) that Scintrex has made its major advance in the Luminex method. With the exception of some work by Exxon confined to uranyl minerals, to the best of our knowledge, no systematic scientific investigation has been carried out in the field of time-resolved mineral luminescence studies other than the work of Scintrex. Scintrex's findings are that all organic materials and most commonly activated luminescent minerals have lifetimes shorter than one microsecond. In addition, only a relatively small number of minerals - among them those called key minerals, or certain ore and pathfinder minerals - have lifetimes greater than one micro-second. Scintrex is able to characterize these minerals primarily by their emission lifetimes and secondarily by their emission spectral characteristics. By a combination of these factors a mineral index is arrived at. From that, photoluminescent minerals can be resolved from one another with a high degree of probability. At least two spectral channels and two time channels - of which one can be common - are required to apply this mineral index. Ground System A portable hand-held Luminex analyzer based on a modulated mercury lamp has been used to date in Canada, the US, and Australia. The current production model of this device is the LG-2. It has two spectral channels and two time channels for each spectral channel. Figure 2 shows a ground Luminex traverse over the Texas-Arizona zinc prospect in Arizona. The instrument was set so the channel read was hydrozincite-specific insofar as possible. The mineralization in this prospect is known to be hydrozincite and other zinc secondary minerals in limestone. Figure 3 shows a ground Luminex traverse over the AAA uranium prospect in Nevada. The instrument was set to optimize the uranyl response. For comparative purposes, broadband scintillation counter readings were made on the same stations (also shown in Fig. 3). It is apparent that both the Luminex and the scintillation counter results reflect a near-surface distribution of uranyl minerals. It is interesting that no visible uranyl secondary minerals

J. Dasher Having an interest in coal slurry pipelines from a decade of arguments with Ed Wasp and crew at Bechtel about pumping thicker slurries slower, I immediately read this article and found nothing in it pertinant to the title. Ayat and Scott pumped five unidentified coals at 9% solids (50%-60% is the area of interest) in a 25-mm (1-in.) pipe around two square elbows through a 76-mm (3-in.) cyclone for up to 60 minutes and sized a large number of samples of unstated size on an unidentified wet screening device. They did not measure power consumption, discharge pressure, flow rate, or give pump tip speed or impeller diameter. They siad the cyclone had a "high" pressure drop (unmeasured) and did much of the degradation (measured) but more or less per unit of energy expended? Hargrove was not measured, so there are no data as to whether it would correlate with degradation. The authors conclude, with no attempt, correlation is "hard to establish." Please experiment before concluding. I am at a loss to know what "increasingly smaller size" means, much less what theory says such particles take "exponentially larger quantities of energy," which the authors neglected to measure. If such experiments without pertinent data or justified conclusions must be published, please attach a pertinant title. reply by M. G. Ayat The first and the last criticism of this paper is that the work is not pertinent to the title. Anybody who reads this article will immediately realize that the work describes the breakage of coal particles to finer sizes in coal slurry pipes and pumps. If this is so, why not title the work "Degradation process in coal slurry pipelines"? What could be more pertinent to this title than the investigation concerning the degradation phenomenon of coal particles in a pipe carrying a coal slurry? Mr. Dasher complains that he does not understand the meaning of the term "increasingly smaller size." The first sentence of this article defines the degradation process as "the breakage of coal particles to increasingly finer sizes." The term "increasingly finer sizes" here means successive breakage of a fine particle to finer and finer sizes. According to Hukki (Hukki, 1975), the probability of breakage is high for large particles and rapidly diminished for fine sizes. We apologize for being brief about some of these definitions. The degradation process, breakage of particles to increasingly finer sizes, is so widespread in the mineral industry that we did not feel it necessary to bore the reader with lengthy definitions of some simple terms. Mr. Dasher states that the coals examined and their original size consist are unidentified. Please look at Table I and Table 2 in the paper again where you will find the original size consist of the coals examined and their full specifications. We only named the coals A, B, C, D, and E to avoid identifying the coal seams that were more susceptible to degradation. Not identifying the name of the wet screening device used in this work has also been criticized. In our opinion, wet screening operation is such a routine and standard procedure that naming the device by which the screening is performed would serve no purpose but to promote a sales approach. This was not our intention. We did not conclude that the correlation between the degradation process and Hardgrove Grindability Index is hard to establish as Mr. Dasher writes in his letter. We stated, not concluded, that "It is reasonable to assume that some relationship between the extent of degradation and its physical properties, such as Hardgrove Grindability Index, does exist. However, any definite correlation is difficult to establish." This statement is based on other researchers work, which are clearly referenced in the article. The conclusions of this paper were based solely on the findings of the experimental work. As for the theory of comminution that Mr. Dasher asks, we would like to refer him to some basic comminution books and articles where various theories are clearly described. For example, Hukki (Hukki, R.T.,"The Principles of Comminution; An Analytical Summary," Eng. Min. 176, 106, 1975) suggests that the relationship between energy and particle size is a composite form of three laws (Bond's law, Kick's law, and Rittinger's law). A comprehensive analysis of coal breakage processes is also performed by Broadbent and Callcott (S.R. Broadbent, and T.G. Callcott, "Coal Breakage Processes, I. - A New Analysis of Coal Breakage Processes;" and "Coal Breakage Processes, II. - A Matrix Representation of Breakage," Journal of the Institute of Fuel, pp. 524-539, December 1956). These and many other relevant publications explain the relationship between the particle size and energy much better that what can be said in this short reply. We will, however, agree with Mr. Dasher on one particular point. We, too, believe that if the investigation concerning the degradation process in coal slurry pipeline were to be pursued further, one could choose to determine one or more of the variables available in the process, such as discharge pressure, power consumption, percent solid, pipe diameter, etc.

INTRODUCTION The Falconbridge mine ore body extends about 1.6 km (1 mile) in length and the deepest developed ore is on the 6050 level below surface. The ore zone varies in width from a few inches to over 30 m (100 ft) and the average width is 4.9 m (16 ft). Access levels are driven in the ore at 53.3-m (175-ft) intervals. The principal method of mining is overhand longitudinal cut-¬and-fill. Prior to 1962 timber square-set stoping as a secondary extraction method was used for about 15% of the total production. Undercut-and-fill was intro¬duced at Falconbridge in 1962 as a potential replace¬ment for the square-set method in heavy ground. The undercut-and-fill method was developed by Inco in the 1950s, its principal application being to transverse pillar mining. Falconbridge made modifications to this method. A feature of the mine is the No. 1 flat fault which dips 0.79 rad (45°) towards the northeast. The main characteristic of the fault is the presence of large swells of ore directly under the plane of the fault. The ground under the fault area is highly fractured and associated with massive sulfides. In the past, the ore under the fault was recovered, with difficulty, by either tight cut¬and-fill or square-set stoping. In the 1970s these meth¬ods were supplanted to a large degree by the under-cut-¬and-fill method. An advantage of the current undercut-and-fill method which uses cemented fill compared to the cut-and-fill and square-set methods is the reduction of dilution due to better control of the walls. At Falconbridge mine, it is estimated that the grade of ore produced by undercut¬and-fill is improved by approximately 10% over other methods. Where undercut-and-fill is used in very weak ground, a much greater improvement in grade can be expected. Table I shows mining production for 1974. The undercut-and-fill method was first used at Falconbridge during 1962. The first longitudinal stope was prepared for undercutting by laying down laminated beams the length of the stope and installing a lagging mat floor on top of the beams. Unconsolidated tailings fill was poured on top of the mat floor. As the cut ad¬vanced under the floor, heavy posts were placed under the laminated beams at 1.8-m (6-ft) intervals. During 1966, a radical change was made to the method when tailings fill, consolidated with portland cement, replaced the unconsolidated fill. This development eliminated the laminated beams and heavy mat floor and greatly im¬proved the stability of the stope. This system, with minor variations, is currently used at Falconbridge mine. APPLICATION The undercut-and-fill method is used to mine in¬competent ground, sills or floor pillars under mined-out levels, or a block of ore isolated between levels. It is occasionally used to advantage in sequencing produc¬tion from various mining blocks. This is done by mining a block of ore cut-and-fill method and at the same time mining the ore block directly underneath by the under¬cut-and-fill method. The undercut-and-fill mill holes at Falconbridge are either boreholes, stripped timbered raises, or steel mill holes. Boreholes and rock raises tend to slough in heavy and broken ground which increases dilution when sloughing exceeds the ore width outline and also in¬creases the difficulty of moving down to start the new cut. For example, in one installation, a 1.2-m (4-ft) diam borehole sloughed to a size of 3.7 x 5.5 m (12 x 18 ft). The undercut-and-fill method usually requires a mill hole extending from the level below the ore to the top horizon of the ore block. The customary methods of providing a mill hole are: 1) A borehole is driven from level to level through the ore block and a chute installed on the bottom level (Fig. 1). 2) An existing raise is used as a mill hole. If the raise is timbered, a steel mill hole is installed inside the timber and tailings fill poured around the steel mill hole (Fig. 1). 3) An existing steel mill hole, situated at one end of a mined-out stope, is used as the mill hole for an ad¬jacent undercut-and-fill ore block. The mill hole posi¬tion is determined when planning the mining sequence of the first stope (Fig. 2).

"We could blow that damned fort out of existence if we could run a mine shaft under it!," claimed one Union soldier eyeing Bobby Lee's Petersburg defense line protecting Richmond and Jeff Davis. Puncture the line, take the hill behind, and the Confederate capital would celebrate Yankee jubilee, 1864. That was June. At 4:15 am, July 30, mine boss Henry Reese, sergeant, 48th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, gingerly entered the mine, dark and muddy. Something had gone wrong. The mine, set to go off at 3:30, hadn't exploded. It had to be checked. The main mine gallery, 1.5 m high x 1.4 m wide (5 x 4 ft) narrowing at the top to 0.6 m (2 ft), forced Reese into a tuck run. Some¬where up there in that 155 m (511 ft) stretch running 6 m (20 ft) under the rebel works, moisture may have doused the charge. Or maybe a fuse splice went awry. Or maybe there was live fire steaming like a locomo¬tive towards 3.6 t (4 st) of black powder. Perhaps now Reese wished this sprint was shorter. For the mine boasted a record break¬ing distance in military annals. Lieut. Col. Henry Pleasants Credit goes to Lieut. Col. Henry Pleas¬ants, commander of the 48th, who overheard the soldier's claim for what a mine could do. In peacetime, Pleasants had been a railroad engineer working on the Sand Patch Tunnel. He later switched to mining, working for the Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Co. He even married the daughter of the editor of The Miners Journal. Grieving over his wife's early death, Pleasants plunged into the ven¬ture of war. This Union officer took the mine idea to the brass. Headquarters was less than enthu¬siastic. "The chief engineer of the Army and the rest of the regular Army wiseacres said it was not feasible," Pleasants wrote to his uncle. The pros scoffed, ticking off a list of horribles: No mine has ever gone that far, men will suffocate and be crushed, the rebs will countermine, the men will be trapped. Still, Pleasants eked out a signal to proceed. In the meantime, the miners of the 48th had commenced to dig anyway. It was like the 48th to proceed against the odds. The 48th Pennsylvania Volunteers The 48th had been recruited from Penn¬sylvania's Schuylkill County, anthracite coal mining country. The mines had been torn with strife over wages. Strikes and rioting were prevalent. Murder was not unknown. This "Buckshot" resistance centered in Pottsville, PA. It forced the governor to call in troops. Coal was in high demand to run the war machine. Pennsylvania operators worried that a military draft would stir up violence, closing the mines altogether and further shift¬ing business to emerging Illinois mines. Men lit out for the western gold fields in the tens of thousands. Secret societies bred in the mining camps invited draft agents to dance at the end of a rope. Jobs threatened by cheap, victorious South¬ern labor were one warning intended to get immigrant miners interested in the war. Operators gave miners time off to help de¬fend Philadelphia during Lee's thrust to Gettysburg. Even so, the draft spawned new violence and troop intercession. Soldiers were not welcome. The dust had barely settled when into this Pennsylvania "minefield" marched the 48th on a recruitment drive. The 48th had been in Lexington, KY on guard duty. When it came time for the regiment to pull out, the townspeople had prevailed upon authorities to extend the regiment's stay. Finally ordered to move out, the 48th was feted by a hanky-waving, tear-dropping send-off to the lyrical lament Auld Lang Syne. And Kentucky fancied itself to be rebel. Striding smartly into the Pennsylvania coalfields, the 48th attracted 400 recruits and marched off under regimental colors specially made by the proud citizens of none other than Pottsville, PA.

Management should be made to understand where the risks are in heap leaching, and management should be alerted to the variability of costs in heap leaching, many of which are based upon company philosophy. These concepts are complex, but easily illustrated with guided tours of existing heap leach facilities.

This often requires performing economic ana1ysls for an area with limited geologic information available. Input to the economic decision process relies heavily on estimates of mine and mill costs for the potential resources in the area being considered. A methodology for performing these cost estimates was needed to address this situation.

INTRODUCTION The Alchem trona mine, owned and operated by Allied Chemical Corp., is located approximately 32 km (20 miles) west of the town of Green River, and 8 km (5 miles) north of Interstate 80 in southwest Wyoming. Trona, a naturally occuring sodium sesquicarbonate (NaCO3 • NaHCO3 • 2H2O), is used for the production of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), commonly known as soda ash. Present annual US consumption of soda ash is approximately 9.07 Mt (10 million st), out of which approximately 7.3 Mt (8 million st) is produced from the Wyoming trona mines. About 44% of soda ash is consumed by the glass industry; 3 % by exports; and the remaining portion by paper, chemical, soap, textile, and nonferrous industries. Allied Chemical operates an underground mine at an average depth of about 488 m (1600 ft). There are three other trona mines in the area operated by FMC Corp., Stauffer Chemical Corp., and Texasgulf Inc. (see Fig. 1). Allied Chemical became interested in southwest Wyoming trona deposits in the early 1940s. Explora¬tion work was begun in 1959 with the acquisition of federal leases. Exploitation of the reserves began in 1968. Two shafts, one 6.1 m (20 ft) and another 3.7 m (12 ft), were completed prior to 1968. The 6.1-m (20-ft) diam service shaft is divided in half by a cur¬tain wall, with one half used for men and material and the other for ventilation as a return air shaft. During the period from 1968 to 1974, the 3.7-m (12-ft) shaft was used as production shaft with two 7.3-t (8-st) skips. Due to the increased demand for soda ash, plant and mine expansions were completed during 1974. Under this expansion, the material handling system capacity was increased by constructing a new 2721-t (3000-st) capacity ore bin, sinking a 6.1-m (20-ft) diam produc¬tion shaft, and installing a friction hoist with two 22.7-t (25-st) skips. The Alchem mine manpower is 484 employees and about 2.3 Mt (2.5 million st) of trona was produced during 1976. Three different mining systems are used at the Alchem mine: conventional, continuous, and longwall. Allied Chemical introduced its first longwall unit in 1973, which was also the first longwall system introduced in the Wyoming trona district. At present, four conventional, seven continuous, and two longwall units are in operation. This equipment is operated in ten production areas. GEOLOGY The bedded trona and trona-halite in the Green River basin of southwestern Wyoming is a major re¬source for the nation. There are 25 beds that exceed 0.9 m (3 ft) in thickness and underlie areas of about 2590 km2 (1000 sq miles). There are other minor beds that range in thickness from 0.3 to 1.2 m (1 to 4 ft). Allied Chemical's Alchem mine is located in bed 17. The trona bed numbering system starts at the lowest elevation and increases upwards. The trona beds are in the Wilkens Peak member of the Green River formation. The Green River formation was deposited in a lake that began in early Eocene as a large body of fresh water, shrank in size and became saline, and then became fresh water again. The sedi¬ment during the saline phase of the lake, which includes the trona beds, is called the Wilkens Peak member. The underlying freshwater lake deposit is called the Tipton member and includes a 25.9-m (85-ft) sand unit which is a high pressure, low permeability aquifer. The over¬lying sediment is called the Laney shale. The Green River formation is underlaid by the Wasatch formation and overlaid by the Bridger formation (see Fig. 2). The structure of the beds in the area of the Allied Chemical mine is mostly postdepositional asymmetrical folds of small amplitude. These folds range in size of 3 to 6.1 m (10 to 20 ft) to as much as 45.7 m (150 ft). The trend of the folds is northwesterly with the north¬east flank of the anticlines having a steep dip and the southwest having gentle dips. Trona bed 17 varies in thickness from 2.4 to 3.4 m (8 to 11 ft) over the 93.2 km2 (36 sq miles) holdings of Allied Chemical and is flat lying except for the rela¬tively minor folding and a negligible regional dip of about 0.017 rad (1°). Trona occurs naturally in several physical forms in the Green River basin, being both massive and crystal¬line. Introduction Coal extraction by continuous miners (CM) is currently the most common underground method in the US industry and accounts for slightly more than two-thirds of the nation's deep mining production (National Coal Association, 1987). Even if longwall mining should become more commonplace, it can proceed only after ventilation and access entries have been driven by CMs. Since an area of concern continues to be the effects of the dust generated on the health of mineworkers, this paper discusses the relationship between the elemental compositon of mining-generated airborne dust sampled from the immediate ventilation return of a CM and laboratory-generated dust derived from channel samples taken from the mines. There are several potential contributions of this type of study to the coal mining industry. First, after more fundamental knowledge of the causes of Coal Worker's Pneumoconiosis (CWP) is learned, the laboratory-generated respirable dust could be used to identify a potentially hazardous coal seam. Also, this study could possibly aid in understanding the fundamental causes of CWP by producing mining-simulated samples of coal dust that could be used in epidemiological studies. Further, assuming that there is no difference in the elemental composition of a drill-core sample and a channel sample from the same location, a mining company could predict a new mine's respirable dust elemental composition in the immediate ventilation return by using exploratory drill core samples of the roof, coal, and floor rock to prepare the laboratory dust. Ventilation engineers could then use engineering design and control measures during premine planning to reduce the incidence and severity of CWP by better ventilating the potentially hazardous coal seam. If this proper planning prevented any future changes to the ventilation equipment and mine design, much time and money could be saved. Scope of work To investigate the variability of the chemical characteris tics of respirable dust, airborne dust samples from eight underground coal mines located in the eastern and midwestern United States were collected with eight-stage Sierra Model 298 Marple cascade impactors, as well as 25 channel samples of mined material. Each channel sample was removed from the middle of the coal face before mining occurred. Sampling of the mining-generated dust was conducted by Lee (1986) by sampling the entire working sections, primarily for characterization purposes, to obtain information on the locational variability of dust characteristics. Research performed for this study used the elemental analyses of the mining-generated dusts he sampled in the immediate ventilation returns of CMs. The procedure that was used to produce the laboratory-generated respirable dust was based on the Hardgrove grindability test since it reflects the pulverizing characteristics of coal. This test was chosen for several additional reasons. First, it is repeatable and reproducible. A consistent amount of input energy is used as well as a specified size range of feed material to be crushed (the channel samples). Second, it is thought to generate secondary dust in a way similar to that of the crushing and grinding of the coal and rock as they pass through the arc-shaped cutting path of the CM's cutter head. The potential effect on dust generation by this secondary grinding mechanism may be at least as much as that produced by primary fragmentation, which is dust produced by the cutting action of the bit against the coal or rock (Roepke, 1984). Finally, the Hardgrove grindability test is well known and is used in the coal industry to guide mineral processing engineers in estimating the capacity of mills used to grind coal. One hypothesis of dust researchers in the Generic Technology Center for Respirable Dust is that the elemental as well as the physical characteristics of coal mine dust will make a difference in the incidence and severity of CWP. Coal mine dust is generated not only from coal, but also from any rock partings contained within the seam or any roof or floor material mined with the coal. Thus, coal mine dust may not have the same elemental characteristics as the coal being mined. Given that hypothesis, mixtures proportional to each thickness mined of roof, coal, and floor rock derived from the channel samples of the face areas from which the respirable dusts were generated by the CMs were used to produce the feed material that was pulverized in the Hardgrove machine.

A.B. Rushton The work and resulting publications of the Committee on Underground Coal Mine Safety and The President's Commission on Coal were appropriate at the time of publication. The statistics cited in the publications appeared to be valid, and the actions proposed by the committee had merit. Although the actions proposed to achieve further improvements in safety may have been worthy of repeating, to associate statistics (Table 1) that are seven to eight years old with company names is bad. Statistics are readily available from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and are usually within three months of being up to date. A review of the most recent Coal Controlling Co. Report will reveal significant changes in the rankings. The more recent statistics should have been cited, or at least compared with those used in the article. Westmoreland Coal Co. is listed as having a 21.1 disabling injury rate for the period (1/78-12/80). The disabling injury rate for the Company for the year ending 1985 was 7.4 for the underground mines and 6.25 for the total facilities. Through March 1986, the dis- abling rate for the underground mines was 2.86. The management and employees of Westmoreland Coal Co. are committed to safety. The improvements achieved over the past five years attest to that commitment. We are justifiably proud of the achievement and dislike being misrepresented as in the April 1986 article Reply by E.M. Spokes I regret that the lapse of time since the original work gives a picture of safety practice that is no longer true today. That Westmoreland has reduced its disabling injury rate by 65% to 7.4 in 1985 is most commendable, and I congratulate you for this accomplishment. It is typical of the progress sought by the National Academy of Science and National Research Council when they funded the original study and published "Toward Safer Underground Coal Mines" in 1982. If a significant number of companies do as well as Westmoreland, the report will have served its purpose. Sampling data from large mined out areas of, existing Witwatersrand mines is split into areas accepted as 'mines' and used to provide for each mine the equivalent of a number of sets of borehole values as well as the follow-up 'actual' value. This data is used to establish the spatial structures on a macro scale between 'mines' for grade as well as variance and the suitability of the three-parameter lognormal model Is tested for the borehole and 'mine' frequency distributions. A comprehensive range of borehole valuation techniques is then applied to a large number of borehole sets on an individual mine basis. The results for each technique are then compared with the corresponding follow-up 'actual' values for these mines. After normalisation via the three- parameter lognormal model the estimates are also correlated with the 'actuals' to define any conditional biasses and to establish the observed error distributions and error variances of the estimates. On this basis the various techniques are rated for their relative efficiencies and the significance of the advantages gained.

The mining industry is an easy target for criticism from an environmentally sensitive society. Recent researches discovered that human activities, including mining. cannot be blamed for all of the pollution observed on earth. Interdisciplinary research is providing diagnostic and remedial solutions to problems such as acid mine drainage and cyanide-polluted streams. Researchers have also found that mercury-bearing hot springs and volcanic eruptions are partly responsible for some pollution. Geochemists, mining geologists, engineers, and environmental scientists can pool their efforts to make the environment cleaner and safer. Remote sensing of the environment and the use of microbes may become much more popular in the near future in the mining-environment arena.

"Sustainable long-term restoration requires adequate planning and preparation, implementation, and measurement goals to monitor success associated with restoring sites to pre-disturbance levels of ecological health. The Buckhorn Mountain Mine riparian habitat restoration project has been a multi-year endeavor with a variety of restoration techniques implemented by Kinross Gold/Crown Resources Corporation. INTRODUCTION The Buckhorn Mountain Mine procured mitigation lands during the permitting process to be set aside for long-term restoration. A portion of this mitigation land included three aquatic habitat mitigation parcels; a spring and wetland complex and two stream and riparian corridors. These properties were historically used for agriculture purposes and livestock grazing. During initial permitting, habitat monitoring and mitigation plans were created to help guide restoration, and provide measures for success. Various techniques and adaptations have been implemented on the properties since 2007, and continued efforts are being implemented annually to ensure the long-term success of the project. Field measurements are collected annually to ensure mitigation objectives are being met, and provide opportunity to modify restoration efforts when necessary. MATERIALS/METHODS Restoration efforts have included implementation of several methods including livestock exclusion, treatment of state and locally listed noxious weed species, installation of regionally sourced riparian plant species and local stock willow cuttings. Annual mechanical and herbicide treatments for noxious weeds have been conducted annually. Efforts to control reed canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea) have been implemented since 2013; methods include mechanical and herbicide treatments. A combination of methods has been employed to help aid restoration of native species within the riparian corridor, and increase survival of planted species, including weed matting and browse barriers to aid riparian planting success. Instream planting of local stock willow have also been employed to increase stream vegetative cover and provide long-term bank stabilization. Most recently, a perched culvert near one of the properties has been replaced with an aquatic life passable culvert designed to aid in the upstream migration of fish species into the stream system. Efforts to provide increased fisheries into upstream portions of the system and aid in restoration of stream bed and bank have been employed to increase the ecological value downstream of the replacement. In addition to efforts completed by the client to provide restoration efforts, a local non-profit organization, in conjunction with the client, installed beaver dam analogues (BDAs) in the fall of 2014. These structures are intended to raise water levels along stretches of incised channel in an attempt to flood historic off-channel floodplain"

Statistical Process Control (SPC) is a cooperative arrangement between a component or raw materials supplier and a manufacturing customer. The supplier must analyze his own manufacturing process and determine, predict, and control those variable elements in the circuit which affect finished product characteristics according to the customer's specifications. The results include: control of fluctuations in product characteristics to a narrow range, close communication between supplier and customer, and an increased responsibility for quality control placed on the supplier. In the mining and. processing of airfloated kaolin some unique problems arise with the SPC concept: 1) The SPC system was designed for manufacturing facilities that did not have to deal with natural variations in their raw material; 2) The airfloat process is relatively simple and offers limited opportunity to change processing steps or "fine tune" a circuit for special product needs; 3) Determining adequate sampling frequency for a plant which processes hundreds to thousands of tons per day is statistically difficult; and, 4) Due to the variety of customer industries served, different SPC programs must be set up to deal with widely varying specifications. For airfloated kaolin, SPC is "in line" process control, not after the fact "quality" control. The emphasis must be on statistically valid sampling of the kaolin ore and complete monitoring of its path through the beneficiation circuit.

The Tanco pegmatite is located in the Bird River greenstone belt of south-eastern Manitoba approximately 160 km northeast of Winnipeg (Figure 1). The orebody was discovered in 1929 and subsequently attempts were made to exploit it for tin by Jack Nutt Mines Ltd. and later in the middle 1950's by Montgary Oil Ltd., who extensively developed but did not produce from its lithium deposits. In 1966 systematic investigation of the pegmatite as a potential source of tantalum led to the founding of Tantalum Mining Corporation of Canada Ltd. (TANCO), and production of tantalum concentrates from the Bernie Lake mine commenced in 1969. Tanco's currently jointly owned by Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Cabot Corporation, and the Province of Manitoba.

INTRODUCTION The need for Government-sponsored research and development to increase excavation rates and lower costs for tunneling and mining operations in a variety of rock types has been emphasized in a wide range of publications from advisory panels, symposiums on rapid excavation, and individuals. In response to the predicted demands for mining and construction-oriented underground excavations for the next two decades (1970-1989), a comprehensive 10-year, $200-million research program in rapid excavation was proposed by the National Academy of Sciences in 1968 (1). Although the large program recommended by the Academy has not been funded, substantial Government-sponsored research in rapid excavation has been conducted during the past several years. This paper reviews some of the significant research accomplishments obtained under a three-year, $6.6-million research program in rock mechanics and rapid excavation sponsored by the Defense Department's Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) and managed by the Bureau of Mines. In addition to the rock mechanics research, five major phases of excavation; systems analysis, geologic prediction, rock disintegration, ground support, and materials handling were represented by the projects funded under the ARPA program. Mining companies are increasingly approaching the social aspect of sustainable development within the rural communities that neighbour their projects and operations. Rural community engagement requires significant effort and resources, and it can be extremely challenging for mining companies to earn and sustain social capital. The focus on rural, proximal community engagement is not to be understated and has led to significant benefits in many communities. However, opposition to mining projects is often exhibited in urban environments, where there may be potential for mining companies to gain social capital with relative ease. Cities tend to have existing frameworks for community engagement and public activation, such as annual parades and festivals, that make it easy for a mining company to provide financial support or value-in-kind. Local organizations and community groups can achieve the same amount of engagement in an urban environment with significantly less effort required from the mining company. By applying simple marketing principles to community engagement strategies, corporations can increase awareness for their business and encourage city residents to think critically about the origin of resources. Unlike many corporations, mining companies are not marketing or selling products to individual consumers. From this arises the opportunity for a company to use marketing to promote other positive initiatives and, as such, connect their brand with positive messaging thus earning social capital. This may lead to a wide variety of secondary impacts including benefits to recruitment efforts, increased political support, and positive media coverage. This paper explores these matters with special reference to Vancouver, BC, Canada and the mining companies Teck and Goldcorp.

INTRODUCTION Historically, pollution control in the metal-ore mining industry has been very limited. Unless mine water contained large quantities of solids, it was generally discharged without any treatment. If treatment was used to control solids, it was principally the provision of a settling basin in the form of a tailings impoundment used in conjunction with an associated metal ore dressing facility. Recently, however, a growing awareness of the adverse environmental impacts of mine drainage, coupled with strict environmental laws, has prompted the mining industry to look at new technologies and to refine the existing methods to further treat the wastes generated. This industry is unique in that waste loadings are extremely variable, and a "typical facility with typical waste loads" does not exist. Consequently, one waste- water treatment system cannot be utilized on an industry wide basis; rather, each treatment system must be designed specifically for the pollutants in each individual discharge. Public Law 92-500, the Federal Water Pollution Control Act (FWPCA) Amendments of 1972, became effective on Oct. 18, 1972. This law completely restructured Federal laws and philosophies underlying the Federal approach to water pollution control. Prior to the 1972 amendments, the principal Federal regulatory tool had been water-quality standards based on a designated use for a particular body of water. The concept was that waste disposal into water bodies is a desirable and acceptable use of the water body if it does not interfere with other beneficial uses. This had the effect of requiring various degrees of treatment and, consequently, various economic hardships on industries de- pendent upon their location. In many waterways. it is very difficult to quantitatively relate discharges to water quality. The 1972 amendments changed the basic philosophy, as stated in the Senate Committee report on the bill, to ". . . no one has the right to pollute . . . that pollution continues because of technological limits, not because of any inherent right to use the nation's waterways for the purpose of disposing of wastes." Pursuant to Sections 301, 304(b), and 306 of the FWPCA Amendments of 1972, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was required to establish effluent standards applicable to all industrial discharges. These standards must be based upon the application of the "best practicable control technology currently avail- able" (BPT) and the application of the "best available technology economically achievable" (BAT). The BPT and BAT levels must be achieved industry-wide by July 1, 1977, and July 1, 1983, respectively. WASTE SOURCES The waste-water situation in the mining segment of the ore mining and dressing industry is unlike that encountered in most other industries. Most industries (e.g., the milling segment of this industry) utilize water in the specific processes they employ. This water frequently becomes contaminated during the process and must be treated prior to discharge. However, in the mining segment, process water normally is not utilized in the actual mining of ores (exceptions are hydraulic mining operations and dust control), but it is a natural occurrence that interferes with mining activities and must be removed before mining can commence. Water enters mines by ground-water infiltration and surface runoff, and it comes into contact with materials in the host rock, ore, and overburden. The underground mine must pump large quantities of ground water to prevent flooding of the mine. Water from surface mining operations generally occurs as a result of surface runoff of rainwater. Generally, mining operations control surface runoff through the use of diversion ditching and grading to prevent, as much as possible, excess water from entering the working area. Nevertheless, some surface runoff does come into contact with the working area and may become contaminated. The quantity of water from an .ore mine is unrelated, or only indirectly related, to production quantities. De- pending upon its quality, the mine water may require treatment before it can be discharged into the surface drainage network. The variability of water quality from mines can best be demonstrated by looking at Table 1. This table shows the range of pollutant concentrations in untreated discharges from three different categories of mines (as categorized by EPA in the development of BPT and BAT effluent standards for the metal-mining industry). Data for this table were obtained during EPA's preparation of effluent standards for this industry. The parameters shown on the table are the pollutant parameters of primary interest in this industry; blanks in the table indicate that data were not available, and the parameter is not expected to be present in significant quantities. Other pollutant parameters are present in mining waste water, but they are either incidentally removed in the treatment process or are found only in trace amounts. The three categories comprise more than 90% of the metal production value in the United States and approximately 95% of the total mine discharges. It is important to note that not all parameters are found in significant concentrations at all locations. IMPACT ON WATER QUALITY One of the most troublesome mine-drainage problems is acidity. Although generally associated with coal mining, acid mine drainage frequently occurs from other types of mines. Although the exact mechanism of acid mine drainage is not fully understood, it generally is believed that pyrite (iron sulfide, FeS,) is oxidized by oxygen (Eq. 1) or ferric iron (Eq. 2) to produce ferrous sulfate (FeSO4) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4) . The mining of ores associated with pyritic material exposes the pyrites to water and oxygen and grossly accelerates the natural oxidation processes, resulting in the significant production of acid mine drainage.

As productivity improvements reduced the number of continuous miner sections from seven to three while maintaining full productive capacity, a decision was made to test an advancing tailgate ventilation system on the shortwall mining section. Having the shortwall mine its own return air system has freed the third mining section for more productive, less costly mining. The advancing tailgate has provided effective ventilation across the face and gob with acceptable pressure losses. The tailgate development continuous miner section has been since transformed from a low productivity part-time function to a high productivity development/retreat panel and is available for long term mine development duties also.

The objective of this paper is the development of a reliable simulation model for the operation and production capacity of an aggregates quarry. Based on this model, a computer program is introduced that provides the final production outputs according to the defined material gradation and machinery characteristics. The program takes into consideration all operational parameters that may be introduced by the user through the whole machinery network. As a result, all production parameters are properly updated. The structured simulation program can help detect production inefficiencies that result from design ineffectiveness. Additionally, the program can be used for the generation of alternative scenarios for future modifications of a plant's configuration. Finally, a designer can use it as a tool for obtaining optimum solutions concerning newly designed quarries. As a case study, a quarry operating at Heraklion, Crete, was examined. The application of the program to the plant produced a complete image of the quarry's input/output characteristics, along with some suggestions for improvements on certain production processes.
