During the 1970's a number of covered storage facilities were constructed in North America to store and handle large quantities of bulk, solid materials. This trend, away from outdoor storage piles, will probably continue at a stronger pace in the 1980's. Structures along the rift were subjected to episodic reactivation. Major north-northeast-trending high-angle normal or reverse faults and northwest-trending trans-current fault systems, may exercise control over ore-forming processes. Gabbro and basalt are the dominant igneous rock types. Carbonatite and kimberlite occur in Nebraska and Kansas. Concentrations of Cu, Ni, Co, Ti, Au, Ag and PG-minerals are known to occur in this setting Arkosic sandstone, siltstone, shale and minor carbonate units occur on top of the rift basalts and in flanking basins where they may reach thicknesses of 10 km. The potential for stratiform or unconformity-related metal liferous deposits must be considered.

Accurately predicting coal seam discontinuities is an important part of modern underground coal mining. Conventional methods of coal exploration sometimes fail to identify rapid variations that may seriously impact mining and quality. Radio Imaging Method (RIM), a geophysical approach to mapping longwall panels, has been developed where electromagnetic signals are transmitted and received though the coal block. The amount of signal loss for a given distance, when compared to the coal seam characteristics, identifies anomalous areas. A comparison of RIM predictions with actual geologic conditions encountered during longwall mining demonstrates the accuracy and usefulness of the data.

All mining operations using trucks have a common need to properly match the number and size of hauling units (trucks. wagons. scrapers. etc.) to a loading unit (wheel loader. hydraulic shovel/excavator, cable shovel. push tractor. etc.) to provide the best possible fleet match. Optimizing fleet match minimizes the cost per unit of material moved by that fleet. As haul conditions change (haul length. grade. or rolling resistance), there may be need to adjust the number of trucks to maintain the optimum fleet match. Fleet Production and Cost is a tool which, among other things, can be used to optimize the truck-loader match.

Gem-quality red beryl in the Wah Wah Mountains of southwestern Utah formed as a post-magmatic mineral in a topaz rhyolite flow. Unlike topaz, this beryl occurs along fractures in devitrified rhyolite, rather than in lithophysal vugs. The flow occupies a graben and perhaps a significant paleo-drainage. Beryl occurs at medial depths within the eroded flow, about 170 m below overlying mafic lava flows. Both beryl-bearing fractures and the host rhyolite show an unusual amount of argillic alteration compared with other topaz rhyolite flows. Alteration may be related to the incursion of surface water along shrinkage fractures within the flow. Whole-rock concentrations of CaO within the host rhyolite are very low (<0.01 % to 0.18%) compared with other topaz rhyolites and Be concentrations (about 20 ppm) are about average. Low Ca activities prevented fluorite precipitation and allowed Be transport as fluoride complexes. Beryl probably grew at subsolidus temperatures (-300-650°C), but above the temperature of kaolin development (200-300°C) as fluoride-rich vapors, released by devitrification, encountered fractures and mixed with vapors derived from surface water flowing through the fractures. Beryllium fluoride complexes reacted with water vapor, silica minerals, alkali feldspar, water, and Fe-Mn oxides along fractures to produce red beryl. Continued reaction of the cooling flow with surface water at lower temperatures probably produced a boiling, more acidic fluid that produced the argillic alteration. Consequently, eruption of low-Ca topaz rhyolite followed by entrance of surface water into medial portions of a devitrifying and still hot lava flow appear to be critical factors that led to red beryl formation.

The physical and mechanical properties of coal play a important role in the planing and design of coal mines. However, due to the complexity conditions in situ and the influence of unknown factors, it is hard for people to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of coal directly. In this research, uniaxial compressive stress was used to change the attribute of coal samples, and the ultrasonic measure technique was used to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of coal. The results of laboratory test showed that there was a strong relation between uniaxial stress and velocity of ultrasonic wave. Sensitivity analysis with numerical simulation was used to define the relation between the physical-mechanical parameters of coal and ultrasonoc wave. With the dynamic analysis module of FLAC, three elastic and plastic models were built to model the coal samples. The modeling parameters were changed pro rata, and the correlation of coal and ultrasonic wave properties were summarized and presented. The result from this research will be base for further analysis of caving behavior of coal.

The Tenmile Range is a north trending zone of high relief within the central Colorado porphyry-mineral belt, located between Leadville and Breckenridge. (Figure 1, the Index Map of the area surveyed.) The Climax mineralized zone is located at the southern end of the range on the northwest side of the Continental Divide. This portion of the total area surveyed will be discussed in detail today. A fixed wing aeromagnetic survey was flown over this range and mineralized zone in the fall of 1957. The survey was run as an experiment to see if a useful geophysical tool could be applied in the exploration for similar type deposits. The purpose of this paper is to describe the results of this survey and the approaches used to aid in the interpretation of the total intensity data.

In recent years, we have witnessed many innovations in the equipment used in handling bulk materials. Not too long ago, any sizeable stockpile of coal or iron ore was attended by one or more material handling bridges. More recently, large stockpiles have been built with mobile equipment of&apos; the earth moving type with bulldozers and front end Loaders being utilized in reclaiming operations. The most recent stocking and reclaiming device is the rotary bucket wheel machine. The early bucket wheel machines built in the United States were developed for the strip mining of coal. We understand that the first American machine was built in the Midwest in 1944. This type of unit was developed in an effort to reduce the cost of removing overburden and to provide satisfactory spoil disposal. As the available coal reserves under shallow cover were exhausted, the cost of removing the deeper overburden with conventional equipment became too great for these operations to continue profitably. The first machine has now been followed by six or seven additional units, the largest of which can handle material at a rate of more than 7000 cubic yards per hour.

The broad front concept is based on the principle that gasification can be achieved more efficiently and completely from a plane broad combustion front in contrast to other geometries obtainable with current methods of gasification. By restricting combustion to a plane broad front, the ideal condition for gasification is achieved. A plane broad combustion front can be developed in coal by initiating and propagating combustion from the walls of an oriented channel and collecting product gases from another similarly oriented channel. Flow will then be directed along the highest permeability of the coal bed, the available cross-sectional area for fluid flow is substantially increased and, more importantly, the increased flow will be uniformly distributed throughout the whole mass of coal. The success of the method is greatly dependent on how well an initial and rigorous permeability survey and associated corrective measures yield a well-characterized coal bed. To maintain uniform reaction rates, the advance of the combustion front is located with pressure- or mass flow-transducers. These sensors are then connected to servo-controlled mufflers for controlling segments of the fire front which are advancing ahead of others. Finally, the development of the concept to overcome problems of roof collapse, reactant and product gas leakages, and water invasion are briefly summarized.

A number of investigators have studied the electrokinetic potential (?) of kaolinite as a function of pH. (1,2,3,4,5) These investigators all agree that the ? is negative except at quite acid pH values. The actual shapes of the curves reported by the several authors vary considerably. In spite of the general negative character of kaolinite the mineral has a rather high anion exchange capacity. (6,7,8) The cation exchange capacity is the lowest for the clay minerals. (6) It has been shown that anionic surfactants adsorb readily onto the mineral even up to neutrality, often in quantities exceeding the reported anion exchange capacity. (7,8) At least part of the anionic adsorption should be onto positive edge sites thought to exist on the mineral. (9,10) In the present study ? of kaolinite was measured as a function of pH using both the streaming potential (sp) and microelectrophoresis (m.e.p.) methods. In addition ? was measured at various pH values as functions of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and trimethyldodecylammonium chloride (TMDAC) concentrations. In some experiments decyl alcohol (DA) was added.

Introduction Many discoveries have been made during the-past decade of low grade gold-silver deposits in the western US. This has stimulated development of low cost cyanidation procedures for precious metal extraction. Heap leach cyanidation techniques possess considerable potential for application to these low grade ores, small ore bodies, mine strip waste, and tailing materials where fine grinding is not necessary for good extraction. For heap leaching to be successful, these resources must have good permeability to achieve uniform distribution of the cyanide solution throughout the heaps. Some of the most difficult of the gold and silver ores to treat successfully by heap leaching are those containing excessive amounts of clays, or fines generated by crushing. Presence of excessive amounts of slimes, -50 µm (-270 mesh), in the heap leach feed will slow percolation, cause channeling, or produce dormant or unleached areas within the heap. This may result in unreasonably long leaching periods and poor extractions. In extreme cases, the clays or slimes can completely seal the ore heap. This causes the leach solution to run off the sides of the heap rather than penetrate the ore bed. The problem of heap leaching ores with fines can be aggravated while preparing ore heaps because of the natural sorting of coarse and fine material that occurs. This phenomenon results in concentration or ore fines in the center of individual ore piles and concentration of larger rock fragments of the lower slopes and base of the pile. When the individual piles within the heap are leveled off for the installation of the sprinkling system, additional segregation occurs as the fines sift through the coarser ore particles. This results in localized areas or zones with marked differences in permeability. Consequently, the leach solutions follow the course of least resistance. They percolate down through the coarse ore regions and bypass or barely wet areas that contain large amounts of fines or slimes. Effective use of marginal gold and silver resources by heap leaching required development of new methods to achieve more uniform size distribution when preparing ore heaps and better slime control during leaching. Early methods Agglomeration and balling of crushed ore to produce a porous and more uniform feed material for heap leaching is a viable method for treating clayey ores. Researchers from the US Bureau of Mines in Reno, NV began agglomeration pretreatment research in the mid-1970s for applications to and exploitation of these poor percolating feed materials. Little attention had been given to such methods before the Bureau&apos;s research. In 1905, T. C. Scrutton developed a unique technique for obtaining rapid vat leaching of a clayey ore where the gold was finely disseminated. His technique consisted of rolling the ore down a chute inclined at 60° to form agglomerates or balls readily permeable by the cyanide solution. However, these agglomerates lacked rigidity. And, to ensure good percolation leaching and washing, they could not be bedded in layers more than 1 m (3 ft) deep. If this depth was exceeded, it is difficult to obtain uniform leaching and washing. This results in reduced gold recovery. Shepard and others in 1937 studied the addition of lime and carbon dioxide or calcium carbonate to gold-bearing tailings to form agglomerates suitable for vat leaching. Satisfactory percolation flow rates were achieved in 90 g (3 oz) scale experiments, but the reagent requirements were cost prohibitive. Kaolin is a hydrated aluminum silicate mined primarily in middle Georgia along the "fall line", the location of the coast line in prehistoric times. It is used extensively as a filler for paper, insecticides, tires, plastics, a pigment for paints, as a coating for fine gloss paper, and for high grade ceramic products, such as catalytic converters. During its journey from the open pit mine to its final use, kaolin takes many forms, and must be handled in many different ways. The purpose of this presentation is to follow kaolin through its process and briefly describe some of the methods Georgia Kaolin Company, one of the world&apos;s largest kaolin producers, uses to handle and convey its product and some of the peculiarities involved.

Sphalerite is commonly floated in an alkaline environment and under such conditions the overall activation mechanism is obscured by the hydrolysis of Cu2+ and precipitation of Cu(OH)2. Electrokinetic and kinetic flotation tests show that the activation of sphalerite is a two-stage process; the activation products formed on the surface of sphalerite in near neutral and in alkaline solutions in the first rapid activation stage are "flotation-inactive". These layers, when formed in an alkaline solution, are unstable and are transformed into the "flotation-active" form in the second stage. However, the surface layers formed during activation in alkaline environment by copper in the presence of lead ions are very stable and even after a long conditioning time the flotation rate is not improved. Consequently, while both Cu2+ and Pb2+ activate sphalerite flotation, quite unpredictable effects may result when both are present in the solution.

Improvements which have been made in commericial flotation systems during the past fifty years have resulted more from trial and error methods in the mill than from research in the laboratory. Research has often provided explanations of why mill changes have improved the metallurgical process. Hopefully, in the next fifty years, changes in mill flowsheets will come about, primarily, as a result of research work. However, since minerals, in their infinite variety, cannot be reduced to a standard state, research on commercial ores will have only a local utility, and research on pure minerals will have little commercial application. What will emerge from research on pure systems are mechanisms of adsorption, and this in turn may throw some light on the very much more complex adsorption processes taking place in the pulps of commercial ores. Quartz, without a doubt, has been the subject of more research effort than any other mineral, but we are still a long way from completely understanding its behavior in flo¬tation. Hematite and calcite have received considerably less attention. Ores containing a mixture of all three minerals, however, are commercially important, and the iron deposits in Alabama have been extensively studied by the United States Bureau of Mines (1). The literature reveals no reports of research on synthetic mixtures of all three.

An International Symposium on the Ecology and Revegetation of Drastically Disturbed Areas was held at the Pennsylvania State University in August 1969. Scientists from 13 foreign countries and 18 states in the United States attended this meeting, which focused on those areas disturbed by mining. The symposium enabled scientists from all over the world to get together for two weeks and discuss informally some of the knotty problems of reclaiming these disturbed areas. Trying to present the results of each of the 64 papers delivered at the symposium might be difficult. So, I will try to bring you up to date on the general status of research on the reclamation of surface-mined areas, particularly in revegetation and hydrology. I will also mention some research that is under way but was not presented at the symposium.

Today man is taking his family back to a cave saying, "Come enter in because of what I have done". At the close of World War II Germany said if they had gone underground one year earlier with more of their operations, the war could have lasted four years longer with perhaps much of Britain devastated. The protection of the home front no longer rests with the soldier in actual combat. The battle will be won at home with the most careful kind of protection against missiles. After Nagasaki-Hiroshima Sir Winston Churchill said in substance "Up to now the Almighty has mercifully withheld from man the knowledge of these terrible weapons of destruction."

The Outokumpu Skim-Air Flash Flotation machine was developed to separate valuable mineral from gangue as early as practical by floating it with specially designed flotation equipment installed in the grinding circuit. Machines already in service have shown the ability to produce final grade concentrate with an increase in overall recovery and flotation rate while decreasing filter cake moisture and reducing fluctuating feed grades to conventional flotation circuits. The first US production test was carried out in a southwestern copper concentrator with successful results. This report describes the results of the test along with an explanation of the process and the benefits obtainable.

The growing national concern over energy has aroused a great deal of interest in the most efficient and least costly way to use our remaining fossil fuel reserves. A number of studies have been published which compare the overall thermal efficiency and cost of gas and electric energy. These studies have been carried out by a wide variety of organizations including Oak Ridge National Laboratory, The Rand Corporation, The Stanford Research Institute, and The Institute of Gas Technology. This paper is an attempt, by PGandE, a large combined gas and electric utility serving most of the northern and parts of central California, to compare the cost and efficiency of gas and electric energy for certain residential appliances using actual operating data and financial statistics for the year 1974, and thereby develop some guidelines for future energy developments utilizing these limited fossil resources. The appliances chosen for the study were kitchen ranges, clothes dryers, hot water and space heaters. These appliances were selected because they can be served with either gas or electricity and they account for approximately one-third of PGandE&apos;s total residential electric sales and nearly all of PGandE&apos;s residential gas sales.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated flotation hydrodynamics to improve the recovery of coarse phosphate. Fluid velocity profile measurements were used to characterize the hydrodynamics within commercial phosphate flotation cells and laboratory flotation cells. The effects of agitation, aeration, and pH on coarse phosphate recovery were measured in the laboratory flotation cells and correlated with the hydrodynamics measurements. Test results revealed that the agitation energy and aeration level had a significant effect upon flotation response. By optimizing these two parameters, 92 pct of the phosphate was recovered in a rougher flotation concentrate grading 28 pct P2O5?
