The US Geological Survey (USGS) held a one-day workshop at its Denver, CO facility to inform the public of the status of its National Mapping Program. In addition, the agency wanted to obtain information from topographic map users on what their needs are. The agency wants to know what the topographic map user wants. The USGS faces the challenge of keeping up with the changing needs of the nation. In the last few years, the agency has changed dramatically to meet these needs. For example, the "new" USGS incorporates mineral-information specialists from the former US Bureau of Mines and also uses the expertise of former National Biological Service employees. These areas complement the agency's traditional strengths in mapping, geology and water re- sources. The stated mission of the USGS's National Mapping Division is to "meet the nation's need for basic geospatial data, ensuring access to and advancing the application of these data and other related ears science information f& users worldwide." To accomplish this goal, the USGS publishes topographic maps, including shaded-relief editions of areas of special interest (state maps and national parks); photo image maps; satellite image maps; geologic maps and hydrologic maps. The geologic maps include geologic quadrangle maps, oil and gas investigation maps and charts, and coal investigations maps. The familiar 7.5-minute series topographic maps are the most widely used. The 7.5-minute- (1:24,000-scale-) format mapping was begun in 1935.

BACKGROUND The development of public transportation in the Los Angeles Metropolitan area is, as in other cities, closely tied to the development of the area because of increases in population and commercial and industrial activity. Local transportation first appeared in the area in the 1870s when the population was fewer than 10,000 residents. Around 1910, after many consolidations of competitive interests, two large railway companies were formed: The Los Angeles Railway, which provided urban transportation in the Los Angeles City area, and the Pacific Electric Railway, which primarily provided suburban and interurban transportation. These two entities continued with their operations until after World War II, when the ownership passed on to the Los Angeles Transit Lines and the Metropolitan Coach Lines, respectively. By then the railroads needed new equipment, track rehabilitation, and, of course, more money-paying patrons. Lack of grade separation of railway facilities from other traffic increased commute times and encouraged travel by private automobiles. The romantic era of hopping on a Pacific Electric Company "Big Red Car" was coming to an end. As early as 1917, in fact, bus lines were substituted for unprofitable rail service. The Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority (LMTA) was established in 1951 by the California Legislature to study and plan for improvements in the public transportation facilities in the Los Angeles area. In March of 1958 the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority took over the operation of the two lines.

Thirty years ago, the appearance of a female mining engineer, geologist or miner in a company, union or mine environment would have been unthought of, unwelcomed and violently opposed. Twenty years ago, the intellectual perception of the news that women were interested in becoming mining engineers, geologists and miners had been accepted by the industry-but no one wanted to be the first to hire one of these exotic creatures. Ten years ago, those who had been most vehemently opposed to the philosophical idea of women working in these areas were faced with competent, productive engineers, geologists and miners-who only incidentally happened to be women-and began hiring them. Historically, of course, one can always find the isolated individual who worked in these areas-the first female graduate of the Colorado School of Mines with a mining engineering degree graduated in 1903-but the concept of woman as professional engineer was very slow in arriving in the United States. The few who worked as miners generally worked in small family enterprises, such as some of the coal mines in both Eastern and Western United States. Others accompanied husbands or sons into wilderness areas searching for gold and other precious metals.

The Homes take Mining Company at Lead, South Dakota has a yearly production of 1,868,741 tons of ore produced from horizontal cut-and-fill stopes and timber cut-and-fill stopes. This production, in addition to the necessary development (drifts and raises), requires 5,168,271 feet of drilling annually. The rock for the most part consists of quartz; mica schist; and cummingtonite schist; and must be considered as relatively hard. Penetration rates average about 15 inches per minute using an operating air pressure of 100 psi. The rock is tough, rather than brittle, and dulling occurs quite rapidly. The average regrind period is approximately 19 feet per regrind using a 1-7/16 inch carbide bit. At the present time, all drilling is accomplished with 2-5/8 inch bore airleg mounted drills, and 2-3/4 inch and 3-inch diameter bore -stopers (raising only). These machines are all direct striking, with 4-1/4 inch chucks. 7/8-inch hexagonal carbon drill steel with forged collars are used in conjunction with 1-7/16 inch multi-use, threaded, carbide bits. 62,793 rods, and 16,234 bits are used to maintain the yearly production. The number of rods noted are the rods that were sent: underground, both new and reconditioned.

The purposes of this presentation are: (1) to discuss the actual as well as potential incidents that have caused and that could cause groundwater contamination at uranium in situ leach mining sites and (2) to discuss remedial actions and solutions that have been or that could be implemented in the future to stop or prevent serious groundwater contamination from in situ leach mining in Wyoming?s Powder River Basin. Open pit, underground, and existing and proposed in situ leach uranium mine sites in the Powder River Basin are shown in Figure 1. In situ leach mining or solution mining for extracting minerals in liquid form is a relatively new addition to the list of conventional mining methods currently used to extract uranium in Wyoming's Powder River Basin. Basically, the in situ leach mining method involves: (1) the injection of a leach solution lixiviant (an acidic or basic oxidizing solution) into a uranium-bearing ore body, via injection wells, to complex the contained uranium, (2) mobilization of the uranium complex from the host material via creation of a soluble complex salt, and (3) surface recovery of the solution bearing the uranium complex via production wells. Uranium is then separated from the leach solution by conventional milling unit operations (ion exchange).

Introduction As the US and world population increases, so does the problem of supplying expanding energy needs. Early requirements worldwide were mostly met by abundant forest vegetation. Man's large scale use of minerals-energy resources is a fairly recent development. It occurred only during the past 200 years. Coal was the first mineral fuel to be used extensively. It was not a large factor in US energy production until the beginning of the 19th century. Petroleum and natural gas use is about 125-years-old. Electricity generation by falling water is about a century old. Atomic energy is only about 30-years-old. Extensive use of it is still in the future. Solar energy is in its infancy. Other energy sources such as wind, peat, and geothermal energy are minor and primarily of local importance. There were three main features of the fuel supply picture during the past 125 years. By 1900 coal replaced wood as the principal energy source. Since 1900, oil and gas have captured many coal markets. And after the mid-1970s, there was a resurgence of coal usage. (Figs. 1 and 2). Wood Until the advent of mineral fuels for energy, the major global energy source was wood. But populations increased and became centered in towns and cities. The problem of a sufficient energy supply first developed as nearby, easily obtained wood was exhausted. This problem became more acute as industries such as shipbuilding, smelting, and pottery making, became more widespread. Results of wood use as an energy source and building material are starkly evident in areas of the world where civilization is oldest. Entire forests were consumed and have never been replaced. In the US, wood supplied 90% of all fuel requirements until about 1850; and more than 50% until after 1880. By 1900, wood still supplied 20% of all energy uses. In the mid-1970s, energy costs increased, due largely to the oil embargo. This increase resulted in an increased wood demand for domestic heating. While large quantities of wood were being used, its share of the total energy market was still less than 3%. By 1983, wood was becoming increasingly scarce and more costly near most large US cities. Wind Wind powered ocean vessels for many centuries. Sailing ships were still common in 1900. Windmills provided an early, cheap energy source and continue to be used today on farms. Design and development of windmills for electricity generation is being conducted. Interest in wind power is growing worldwide where availability of wind currents warrants the investment. Also, US regulation requires power companies to "buy back" electricity generated by windpower in excess of that used by the windmill owner. Coal By the 1600s, England was producing, 900 kt/a (1 million stpy) of coal for heating and other uses. The first coal-fired blast furnace for iron smelting was developed in 1621. Coke-making was developed in 1755, and Watt invented the steam engine in 1769. Illuminating gas made from coal was introduced in London in 1800. During this same 200-year period, France and Germany developed coal production, but on a smaller scale than England. US, bituminous coal was mined near Richmond, VA, as early as 1748. Major bituminous coal-producing states in the early period were Pennsylvania, Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Illinois, and Maryland. West Virginia replaced Virginia as a major producer, when that state was formed in 1863. As the US expanded west, new coal deposits were found and exploited. Indiana, Alabama, Tennessee, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Washington, Colorado, Wyoming, Arkansas, Oklahoma (Indian Territory), Montana, New Mexico, and Texas had significant coal mining operations by 1900. Today the eight major coal producing states are Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, Virginia, Wyoming, and Montana. These states accounted for about 80% of all coal (lignite, bituminous, and anthracite) produced in the US during the past several years.

Introduction The cleaning of coal to remove sulfur and inorganic impurities has, in recent years, become an essential operation in any coal utilization process. US coals, on average, contain about 3% total sulfur, of which more than 60% is generally inorganic or pyritic sulfur. Existing technologies such as heavy media cycloning, selective agglomeration, and electrostatic separation have the potential for removing about 80% of the pyrite from coal (Khoury, 1981). In view of the large volumes of coal being used today, there exists a need for the development of new processes to further improve the separation of pyrite from coal. Colloidal particles in suspension possess surface charges that are related to the chemical composition of the particles. In aqueous suspensions, the surface charge is a function of pH. For coal-pyrite mixtures, it is possible, by an adjustment of the pH (also a function of polar molecules), to reach a state where the charge on coal is very close to zero, but the charge on pyrite is still substantial. The introduction of collector particles with a charge opposite that of the pyrite should then result in the selective flocculation of pyrite and collec¬tor. These flocculates should settle out much faster than coal and could be removed from the bottom of the settling column. This note discusses our preliminary observations of the effect of clay-based collector particles, especially bentonite, on the settling behavior of coal and pyrite. These experiments were conducted with a view to developing a new electrokinetic flocculation process for separation of coal-pyrite mixtures. Experimental The objective of the experiments was to determine the effects of clay-based additives on the settling rates of clean coal, pyrite, and coal-pyrite mixtures. Illinois Colchester (No. 2) coal was obtained after processing in an existing coal cleaning facility. This coal was reported to contain less than 0.3% pyritic sulfur, which was in the form of a fine powder with an average particle size of 5µm. Pyrite (of average particle size 5 µm) was also obtained from the same facility and reportedly contained less than 0.1% coal. The zeta potentials of coal and pyrite in water were measured as a function of pH using a zetameter. The pH was adjusted by adding sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid to the suspensions. Sedimentation experiments were conducted in 50-mL glass cylinders, and settling rates were measured by noting the height of clear liquid above the settling front as a function of time. Settling behavior was also charted by periodically taking photographs of the system. The following systems were investigated: •a slurry consisting of 2.5 g of clean Illinois Colchester coal in 50 mL of water of pH 6.0, with and without the addition of 0.5 g of bentonite (Fisher, purified grade) ; • a slurry consisting of 2.5 g of pyrite in 50 mL water of pH 6.0, with and without the addition of 0.5 g of bentonite ; and • a slurry consisting of a mixture of 1.25 g clean coal and 1.25 g pyrite in 50 mL water of pH 6.0, with and without the addition of 0.5 g of bentonite. In addition, experiments were conducted with kaolinite (Bath, South Carolina) and alumina (Fisher, purified grade) as collector materials to verify the observed effects. Results and discussion Figure 1 shows the zeta potential values for the Illinois coal and pyrite as a function of pH. The zeta potentials of coal and pyrite decrease with increasing pH, changing from an initially positive value at low pH to a negative value at high pH. The point of zero charge (PZC) for the coal is at a pH of 6.2, while the PZC for pyrite occurs at a pH of 10.3.

Titanium was discovered in 1791 and, four years later, was named after the Titans of Greek mythology. Titanium metal was first made in 1910, but was not used commercially until the 1950s when it was nick-named The Wonder Metal of the Age. The first titanium dioxide (TiO2) white pigments were produced commercially in 1915; more than 90% of the titanium minerals produced in the world today are used in the manufacture of white pigments. The remaining 10% are used to manufacture titanium metal and other uses such as welding rod fluxes. Titanium mineral mining began in the United States between 1880 and 1900 in Chester County, Pennyslvania. Rutile from a deposit near Roseland, VA, was mined in 1901. The use for the rutile was limited to production of a few titanium chemicals and for coloring ceramics. Larger scale mining for ilmenite, rutile, and zircon began in Florida to provide chemical materials for use in World War I in 1918. This mining ended in 1928. Large scale mining of titanium minerals in Australia began when Benick, Anderson, and Porter (later called Tamco) started mining the beach sands at Yamba in New South Wales in 1935. Ilmenite production from beach sands in the State of Kerala in southwestern India also began in the 1930s. The 1940s saw many changes in titanium mineral mining. Extensive deposits of ilmenite and ilmenite-bearing iron ores were discovered in eastern Quebec. The Pigments Department of E.I. Du Pont de Nemours & Co. lost their high grade Indian ilmenite supply after World War II began, and they were forced to use lower grade ilmenite from National Lead's (now NL Industries) Sanford Lake Deposit, near Tahawus, NY, in the Adirondack Mountains. At the end of the war, Du Pont undertook an intense search for a domestic ilmenite source. With the cooperation of the US Bureau of Mines, Du Pont geologists found a very large deposit east of Starke, FL, in 1946. In 1948 Du Pont entered into a contract with Humphreys Gold Corp., who operated a heavy minerals mine near Jacksonville, FL, to construct a plant and operate it for a period of ten years. The plant started up in 1949 and operated under Humphreys' management until the contract expired in 1958. Du Pont has operated the plant since that time. In 1956, a second plant was designed and built by Du Pont a few kilometers northeast of the town of Lawtey. The 1960s saw titanium mineral production expand in the southeastern US with Humphreys' contract mining Du Pont's ore body at Folkston, GA. In the early 1970s. American Cyanamid and Union Camp Paper Co. formed a joint venture company, Titanium Enterprises (TE), to mine and separate titanium minerals from Union Camp's ore deposit southwest of Green Cove Springs, FL. In 1975 the TE plant was shutdown and later sold to Associated Minerals (USA), Inc. (AMC), a subsidiary of Renison Goldfields Consolidated Ltd., an Australian company. It now operates under the name RGC (USA). Mineral production grew in the 1970s with the development of extensive heavy mineral deposits at Eneabba in Western Australia and Richards Bay in the Republic of South Africa. The 1980s saw the construction of a very large ilmenite mine and synthetic rutile processing plant in the state of Orissa southwest of Calcutta, India. At the same time, concern for titanium mineral shortages expected by the end of this century, gave rise to a flurry of exploration activity during the mid 1980s. As a result, large deposits were found in Virginia and North Carolina. New deposits were also discovered in Australia. Fig. 1 shows the distribution of world titanium deposits and mines. The world TiO, production capacities are given in Table 1.

Exploration The technology of underground construction and particularly of tunneling, both now and in the future, starts with knowledge of the properties of the medium surrounding the tunnel. Although we are trying to develop machines that can excavate tunnels independently of the properties of the medium, and although we may achieve some success in this direction, we seem always to be brought up short by a paradox: With increasing sophistication of machines and with increasing complexity of construction jobs, our methods are likely to become more sensitive rather than less sensitive to changes in the medium. I suspect that the need for more precise knowledge of subsurface conditions in advance of construction will increase rather than decrease as time goes by. In the recent anniversary issue of Engineering News Record, Probing the Future, Senior Editor Bill Jacobus prophesies highly sophisticated devices to probe the unknowns of the earth's soil and rock materials. He envisions that "drill holes to obtain borings will give way to rock-melting coring devices". He may be right; it is hard to argue the accuracy of predictions of the future. It seems to me more likely, however, that the rock-melting probe will be simply one more in

The Penjom Gold Mine is one of the world's worst preg-robbing gold ores, yielding very low recoveries from traditional CIL methods. Gold recovery from the cyclone underflow was targeted to recover as much gold as possible in the absence of the fine preg-robbing carbon. Gold is recovered by intensive cyanidation and tabling of a gold concentrate produced by gravity from the cyclone underflow. The circuit was designed together with Gekko Systems and uses their InLine Pressure Jig and InLine Leach Reactor technology to reject the preg-robbing carbonaceous material and obtain high recoveries from the gravity concentrate before over grinding the carbon and sulphides. The gravity and intensive cyanidation circuit now recovers almost 50% of gold in new mill feed, with unit recovery in intensive cyanidation of up to 90%, the highest unit recovery in the plant. Operating costs for the gravity and intensive cyanidation circuit are under US$2.50 per oz, while the cost to recover gold from the cyclone overflow is -US$200 per oz. (not including common costs of milling, stripping and electrowinning). Figure 1 shows the increase in gold recovery due to the gravity and ILR circuit coming on line at Penjom.

Until recently, the general expectation among mining compa­nies and financial analysts has been that the price of gold would remain on a generally upward slope. The recent drop in the price of gold has caused many people to re-think the issue. Of course, the price of gold is singularly difficult to predict, so it is difficult to tell which concept is correct. In the present financial situation, however, many junior gold companies are faced with the reality that money is hard to raise, and many senior gold companies find that they are facing a period of corporate losses even though they own solidly producing mines, As engineering consultants, Kappes, Cassiday has recently received several requests to review conventional milling projects to see if heap leaching is a more viable option. In regard to straight financial criteria such as return on investment and net present value, the question is usually fairly easy to answer. However, corporate decisions must often be based on less definable criteria. For instance, new stock issues tend to be more successful if they are larger, which tends to favor milling operations over heap leaches. The corporate issues are often subjective and difficult to generalize about, so I will con­centrate in this paper on a few financial concepts.

This paper presents the experimental results of an ongoing investigation into various properties related to the performance and durability of concretes made using existing and new cement replacements. The process of cement and concrete production is investigated focusing on product performance and environmental performance. The overriding factor for the progression of a material will be product performance however; each material selected will have many intrinsic environmental benefits. The study combines Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) with each cement replacement candidate using the most common replacement percentages, 10, 20, 25, 30 and 50 percent. A 35N/mm2 concrete is then prepared and analysed in the fresh and hardened state. In addition, a chemical and physical analysis of each replacement material has been performed and results compared to the control samples containing OPC only and Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) as a replacement. The results show that in their present form the replacements used in this research do not compare with the strengths achieved by the controls. The right balance of chemical composition and particle grading needs to be achieved to produce a realistic replacement material. The processes required to achieve this must strike a balance between monetary and environmental cost.

BHP Australia Coal Pty. Ltd. (BHPAC) manages and, through its parent company BHP, partly owns seven large opencut mines in the Bowen Basin of Central Queensland, Australia. In terms of developments in surface mining in Australia, the operations of BHPAC are as representative as any. The seven mines managed by BHPAC produce a combined total of about 40 Mt/a (44 million stpy) of mostly high quality coking coal. They also produce small but increasing amounts of thermal and PCI coal. Virtually all of the coal produced is sold on the export market. In 1993, Australia exported 133 Mt (146 million st) of coal. Salable production was 172 Mt (189 million st) in New South Wales and Queensland and 180 Mt (198 million st) nationwide. Mining systems Surface coal mines in Queensland can be typified as large, long-strike-length, shallow-dipping and sometimes multi-seam dragline operations. There are exceptions. Blair Athol, for instance, works a 30- to 40-m (100- to 130-ft) seam beneath shallow cover but is still a dragline operation. Moura is truly multi-seam and steeper dipping but also is still a dragline operation. Mines in the Ipswich area are small shovel-truck operations.

INTRODUCTION In June of 1992, the Bureau of Reclamation, United States Department of the Interior, awarded the contract for construction of the Sixth Water Aqueduct to the Fedrick-Redpath Joint Venture. This aqueduct, a segment of the Diamond Fork Power System, Central Utah Project, diverts water from Strawberry Reservoir into Sixth Water Creek and, when complete, will replace the old Strawberry Tunnel which was driven in the early 1900's. The new aqueduct is being built primarily as a result of deterioration of the old tunnel, but will also have a higher capacity and more positive control than the old tunnel as well as the capability to incorporate a turbine into the system at a later date. The Fedrick-Redpath Joint Venture is comprised of C.R. Fedrick, Inc. of Novato, California and J.S. Redpath Corporation of Tempe, Arizona. Fedrick, with its experience in pipelines and heavy construction, will construct the 4200 ft surface pipeline and flow control structure; Redpath, the managing partner, performed the underground work consisting of a 600 ft vertical shaft and 3300 ft tunnel. The project is located in the Uintah National Forest, approximately 20 miles east of Provo, Utah at a mean elevation of 7000 feet above sea level.

INTRODUCTION This paper deals with the main components in exploring for and developing a gold ore deposit. It addresses geology, exploration drilling, ore reserves, and evaluation criteria in an integrated manner to present an overall picture. Gold forms such a small component of a gold ore body, that particular care should be taken in dealing with the data from a developing deposit. The paper lists the main gold ore deposit types and their character. Their differences, as well as differences to other types of ore deposits, are important to understanding exploration approaches, and problems of ore reserve definition. Gold exploration has enjoyed a great boom in recent years. Many new ore deposits have been developed but experience shows that definition of gold is not a simple straight forward process and this outline attempts to point out some of the important aspects of ore reserve definition including some pitfalls. GOLD DEPOSIT TYPES The Witwatersrand deposits in South Africa produce about 50% of the world's gold. The gold occurs as fine grains in thin beds within gently dipping quartz pebble fan conglomerates usually with associated pyrite grains. It is characterized by rather uniform distribution of gold along thin layers within the conglomerate.

El Teniente Mine of Codelco-Chile, located at Los Andes Range of Mountains, 90 kilometers South far from Santiago, the capital city, has been exploited for more than 90 years, with over 1000 million tonnes of copper ore extraction. No doubt, this particular record, has been possible to achieve due to an efficient combination of human and technological efforts in the exploitation of one of the biggest ore deposits of the world. Throughout times, the exploitation has evolved from a mainly manual one to a highly mechanized exploitation. Notwithstanding, different and several geomechanical problems that occurred in one of its areas, increased the risks to personnel that should normally operate large equipments in its working face. This last condition, forced El Teniente mine to design and develop systems and technologies that would allow the use of tele-operated LHD, picking hammers and drilling equipment (jumbos) from a safe zone. Currently, El Teniente Mine is using in its extractive works equipment such as LHD, picking hammers, and drilling Jumbos, that can be manually or teleoperated commanded from a Central Control Room located one kilometer away from the production area. In general, a new technological era has been opened in the mining exploitation at El Teniente: the exploitation era with telecommanded robots.

Mineral processing in 1980 can be described by several key words, familiar to the industry throughout the past decade: complex, low grade, environmental, energy, high tonnage, and economics. Flowsheets have become more complex in order to treat lower-grade, finer-grained, more complex ores and still meet environmental and economic constraints. Operators and researchers have had to cope with these problems, which have resulted in marked trends in mineral processing. The use of advanced instrumentation in process monitoring, control, and modeling has been increasing to deal with fluctuating ore grades, higher plant capacities, rapidly rising operating costs, and process complexities. The industry has been presented with new generations of equipment that reportedly do the job more efficiently and at a reduced cost. The need to meet stricter air and water environmental standards has resulted in a concerted effort by the mineral industries to obtain an appropriate balance between the needs of mining and mineral processing and the requirements for proper environmental, safety, and health protection. Energy and economic considerations have led to increased equipment size, particularly in grinding, flotation, and conveying. Throughout all phases of mineral processing there has been an effort to reduce energy consumption. One avenue followed by researchers and operators was the testing and use of chemicals to reduce energy requirements.

The vibration energy that travels beyond the zone of rock breakage is wasted - all it does is cause damage and annoyance. Under favorable geologic conditions, this energy may travel many kilometers before it finally drops bellow the background noise level. This has forced the introduction of more restrictive limits to the allowable vibration levels. To maintain the profitability of a mine or quarry and to comply with environmental protection legislation, blasting needs to be performed in a more predictable way that will ensure that the final results are optimal in both mining and environmental terms. Minimization of ground and induced structural vibration is, therefore, a matter of good blasting practice - not just an attempt to avoid complaints from neighbors. A new approach to blast vibration minimization is presented. The method utilizes the existence of the local minimums in the frequency spectrum of single-hole blast vibration. The results are presented as a delay map showing maximum ground or structural vibration velocity for many combinations of interhole and interrow delays. A blast engineer can use this map to select an optimal combination of delays that will produce a low vibration velocity at a selected location and, at the same time, will be acceptable from the point of view fragmentation or muck pile shape.

California's annual production of >11 million tons of cement, at a value of over $640 million, comes from eight companies, which operate 11 plants. Cement is California's second most important mineral commodity, representing 25% of its total annual mineral production. Although most of the cement produced is consumed within the state, current export locales include the Pacific Northwest, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico. An enumeration of the components required to produce cement is deceptively simple: calcium oxide (65%), silica (20%), alumina (4-5%), iron (3-4%), and calcium sulfate (4%) as a retardant admixture. The last, and most expensive, ingredient in cement manufacture is energy. Detrimental materials in cement mixes include excess .magnesium, alkalis, heavy metals, sulfur, and other volatiles. Each of the 11 cement plants in California requires a unique chemical solution of combined raw materials to produce a uniform product: portland cement. The geologist proposing solutions for the additive raw materials in cement manufacture must have a thorough knowledge of a particular cement plant's needs. In the California cement market, keeping the costs of additive raw materials down is one way to also stay competitive, and using a combination of natural and waste materials as additive raw materials allows cement producers to stay competitive.

The Chuquicamata mining and metallurgical complex is the main division of CODELCO-CHILE. Its comparative advantage in the world of primary copper producers had deteriorated severely and, consequently, its top management launched an extensive modernization plan. This paper shows how Chuquicamata recovered its position as a low-cost copper producer and is now well positioned to face the end of this century, as far as competitiveness is concerned. It also shows the company's vision for the )(XI century. Given the volume of its ore reserves, one possibility is expanding the sulfide production line capacity, while in the case of the oxide production line, ore reserves are limited so that there is a need to maximize the effectiveness of both organization and technology use. A final consideration has to do with the balance of supply and demand. Most observers of the copper market agree that supply is growing faster than demand. On the other hand, copper is facing severe environmental problems, especially in the piping business, plus the usual threat of substitution. Nevertheless, copper producers are making very weak efforts to defend the market and increase copper consumption through the promotion of new uses of the metal. This issue is crucial and must be considered if copper producers want to maintain a profitable market.
