Bergbau AG Niederrhein, a subsidiary of Ruhrkohle AG; Essen, Germany, is working coal mines on both sides of the Rhine River. The Prosper Mine in the City of Bottrop has a production of about 13,000 tons per day and has been in operation since the turn of the century. Mining has moved to the north as coal deposits south of Bottrop are exhausted. To facilitate ventilation, material handling, and transportation new shafts are being constructed in the northern coal fields. The Prosper 10 shaft is being sunk to develop the Prosper - Haniel coal field which has reserves of 280 million tons. In October, 1976 Bergbau AG Niederrhein awarded the shaft sinking contract for the 1047 m deep, 8 m inside diameter Prosper 10 shaft to Gewerkschaft Walter; Essen, Germany. Construction costs will amount to about 40 million DM with construction completion scheduled for 1981. GEOLOGY The shaft, located near the town of Kirchhellen north Bottrop, is being sunk in the Grafenwalder Horst between two faults on the south west flank of the Kirchheller Anticline. 270 m of upper cretaceus sands and marls overlay sandstone bedrock at the shaft location. The upper 124 m of this section contain highly saturated sands interspersed with marl. In order to successfully sink the shaft through this section, ground stabilization by freezing was used.

Primary grinding in SAG mills is gaining more importance with respect to the conventional crushing, rod and ball milling operations. This is due to the reduced operating costs generated by lower steel consumption. However. SAG milling is inherently susceptible to more severe risks and problems since it attempts to combine several stages of the conventional crushing and grinding into a single stage. This paper analyzes the SAG milling operation by predicting the motion of rocks and steel balls. The well-known discrete element method (DEM) is used to calculate the trajectories of individual entities, and their collision with one another. A computer code previously used for studying the motion of grinding media in ball mills is enhanced to handle the interaction between heavy spherical steel balls and light chunks of rocks, usually ellipsoidal in shape. The DEM based software called MILLSOFT can animate the charge motion for different design of liners. A case study of a 9.75-m diameter SAG mill is presented and the effects of lifter bar height and configuration on the overall dynamics of the charge are discussed. Also the effect of spacing between liners on lifting the charge is presented. This new approach has a large potential because it shows in detail the effect of each design or operating parameter on the performance of SAG mills.

A Norbridge review of 25 top mining companies highlighted financial problems for many firms. To better understand these results, Norbridge benchmarked 17 mining companies to understand the problems that companies face, the methods being used to improve performance, and the results that have been achieved. The study indicates that many mining companies in three sectors-coal metals, and non- metallic minerals-have implemented new strategies to improve performance. Many of these strategies supplement traditional initiatives with two types of process improvement efforts, facility-specific and company-wide, to help generate performance gains. The study compares the results of these strategies in each sector. INTRODUCTION imes are tough in the mining industry. Norbridge reviewed financial results of 25 top mining companies for the past 2 years-seven coal companies, twelve metals companies, and six non-metallic minerals firms.*The study found that 40% lost money in 2002, and * Coal companies include Alliance Resource Partners, Arch Coal, Consol Energy, Massey Energy, North American Coal, Peabody Energy and Westmoreland. Metals producers include Barrick Gold, Cleveland-Cliffs, Coeur d'Alene, Falconbridge, Freeport McMoran, Grupo Mexico, Inco, Newmont Mining, Noranda, Phelps Dodge, Placer Dome, and Teck Corninco. Non-metallic firms include Florida Rock, IMC Global, Martin Marietta Materials, Oglebay Norton, PotashCorp and Vulcan Materials. The main advantage of the New Austrian Tunneling Method over conventional drill and blast techniques, TBMs and shields is its outstanding flexibility. Many different support concepts help to cope with all but the most adverse conditions. A considerable variety of unique additional support measurements provide a functional tool when dealing with particularly difficult conditions or restricting requirements. The resulting adaptability of NATM with respect to geometric and geologic changes is a cornerstone to providing an economic design and to a safe and unhindered execution of the tunnel work. To take best advantage of this flexibility and to emphasize its cost-saving capacity, NATM explicitly extends the design period into the construction phase. In accordance with corresponding ground classes or other anticipated conditions, a number of basic support categories and an array of additional support measurements are established during the actual design phase. The decision for applying a particular support category at a specific location and for necessary additions to the given support scheme, however, is regularly made on site after each advance, and is determined by the key persons involved in the construction. Contract documents must reflect this approach to facilitate the execution of the work and to curtail construction costs. Biased distributions of risks, however, can adversely effect the envisioned benefits. Consequently, the respective responsibilities of engineer, contractor, and client need to be redefined.

Reserve estimation is a process that commences with sampling and culminates in the issuance of a reserve statement. The tin, gold and diamonds that occur as marine placers on the continental shelf are low grade with very erratic mineral distributions. Sampling, using a variety of special equipment, determines the extent and grade of the mineralization. The sample size is important, especially for diamonds. Together with the sampling density, it determines the accuracy of the grade estimate. Bulk sampling is a confirmatory process. The choice of mining equipment, either new or developed from onshore activities, dictates the unit costs, the cutoff grades and the selectivity of extraction. Thus, the size of the blocks that comprise the mining plan and the reserves are determined. A variety of estimation methods of different reliability are available, with the most sophisticated being kriging. Dilution and losses during mining must be taken into account in estimation, and a grade-volume curve should be constructed. Diamond deposit estimation also involves an extra variable, the dollar value of the stones. During and after mining, essential feedback on the accuracy of un estimation may be given by the RIE factor and by a mineral balance. Reserve estimates are required for several reasons and may be subject to public disclosure. The use of the correct definitions is, therefore, important.

The present study introduces a new approach to understand the copper dissolution rate and to find an adapted mathematical statement for particle shrinkage rate in a batch bioleaching system. Four size classes of a chalcopyrite concentrate, namely [D1 : (−54 + 44)μm, D2 : (−44 + 38)μm, D3 : (−38 + 25)μm and D4 : (−25)μm], were used in the batch bioleaching tests by applying a mixed culture of moderately thermophilic microorganisms. The pulp density and temperature were 8 (%w/v) and 50 °C, respectively. Findings delineated that the bioleaching time can be divided into two specific time intervals: first, the surface reactions were the prevailing controlling step; second, the prevailing mechanism was diffusion through the product layer, whereas the overall rate of the process may be related to both through a Q factor using a mixed model. A mathematical model was developed based on particle size distribution (PSD) and a kinetic model. Experimental validation of the mixed model was accomplished by the representative sample with d80 = 54 microns. Results showed that the PSD of the specific sample was in good agreement with Rosin–Rammler function. Besides, the simulation result of the conversion fraction had the best conformity with the experimental data (with a maximum error of approximately 7%). This paper should be considered as an initial part of a larger, global model for chalcopyrite concentrate bioleaching.

In the municipality of Rio Quito, department of Chocó, Colombia, alluvial gold has been illegally exploited by suction dredging. The project consists of using geospatial techniques to identify degraded areas and analyze the viability of remediation dredging to mitigate environmental liabilities. The area has sediments contaminated by mercury and cyanide, so it is necessary to reconform the riverbed with the remediated material. This paper considers simulation of truck dispatching systems using maximum expected production of the truck-shovel system as the measure of performance. Two analysis methods are utilized: multiple comparisons with the best (MCB) and the combination of MCB with the variance reduction technique known as common random numbers (CRN). These two techniques are compared via simulation experiments. Results show that the combined procedure of MCB with CRN is the superior tool to use to reduce the total number of replications needed to ensure the specified probability of correct selection from a number of systems. In this case study, MCB with CRN reduced the variance by 29% and the number of required replications by 48%. Also, the MCB with CRN procedure narrowed the confidence interval by 18%.

There are approximately 1,800,000 t of discarded dolomitic-limestone tailings from the Gays River lead/zinc mining operation in Nova Scotia. Neutralization effectiveness similar to an agricultural grade limestone and low contents of residual metals make the tailings a suitable source' of soil conditioner material for the local market. However, the fine particle size, 98% passing 147µm, and a high moisture content make their handling and application difficult. Agglomeration of the tailings into relatively small hard pellets was investigated and difficul¬ties were overcome. Pellets with a range of pH values and various amounts of soil nutrients and moisture content less than 10% were obtained, from tailings containing 20% initial moisture, through the addition of less than 15% selected materials.

Bentonite Corporation decided to pursue ISO-9002 Registration for our bentonite production for many reasons. We wanted to improve our current Quality System to encompass all business aspects, not just Quality Assurance. We wanted this system to build supplier/customer confidence and provide our customers with all the services that they needed for their business functions: such as Quality Assurance for their needs; appropriate shipping and delivery; appropriate billing; and appropriate sales, technical and management support of our product. These objectives of our Quality System are addressed by the ISO 9000 clauses and requirements. There were additional reasons and expectations for implementing an ISO 9000 Quality System. ISO 9000 registration would develop and aid international sales since the ISO system is a basic requirement in many parts of the world such as Europe and the Far East. It would bring acceptance of bentonite products by new customers and markets Another objective was to develop better trained employees. We hoped that the ISO Quality System would help us reduce costly non-conformances and reduce overall production and operating costs. We hoped to achieve ISO 900 registration before our major customers required it. For example, our major market is use of bentonite as a binder in foundry mold sand systems. The foundries in North America primarily service the automobile manufacturers who have individual Quality System requirements that are being merged with ISO 9000 Standards. As the foundries addressed the automobile manufacturer?s needs, Bentonite Corporation received numerous inquiries and surveys of our Quality System and its conformance with ISO 9000 Standards. Eventually, ISO 9000 Registration will become a requirement to directly or indirectly service this market.

In this paper, the results of mathematical modeling of casing pipes decontamination from radio-active new mineral forms directly in boreholes using hydrochloric and hydro-silicic-fluoric acids are presented. Modeling for highly and low radioactive coatings on the walls of casing pipes of Anastasievka oil-and-gas deposit was performed using GEMS software, based on the method of Gibbs energy minimization. Calculations have shown that thorianite and goethite, that are present in low-active crusts, detected in casing pipes uplifted from comparatively low depths, are well dissolved in hydrochloric acid, but radiobarite is almost insoluble. For the same acid concentrations, almost all radiobarite of high-active coatings detected in pipes uplifted from considerable depth is dissolved. To evaluate the possibility of decontamination of pipes from radiobarite of low-active coatings, modeling of crust dissolution under the action of H2SiF6 has been performed. The results have shown that for acid concentrations of more than 13 % almost all Ra and Ba are dissolved while all iron and thorium remains in goethite-thorianite solid solution. For the same acid concentration, almost all radiobarite from high-active coatings is dissolved. Therefore, no reagent allows decontamination of pipes from coatings of both types. It seems that successive or simultaneous use of both reagents (HCl and H2SiF6) in certain ratio is required. To clarify this issue, further experimental and model investigations are necessary. The issue of decontamination of casing pipes from galena that is present in high-active crusts also needs to be clarified.

In the UK as existing face capacity is replaced, many of the new faces will have higher installed powers and be located in zones of higher strata temperature. These factors coupled with the need to increase production will result in more faces experiencing environmental difficulies, especially with respect to climatic conditions. In many cases these problems are unlikely to be solved, as in the past, by simply increasing the face air quantity. Therefore other techniques including refrigeration will be necessary, possibly requiring major capital and operational expenditure. It is easy to spend large capital sums and incur high operational expenditure without achieving the desired amount of climatic control. There is therefore a great need for reliable prediction techniques to aid in the making of sound, informed decisions which will have a significant influence in the long term on the level of production costs. A computer program able to predict the heat flows and resultant climatic conditions on a long¬wall coalfaces has been developed. Throughout it's development underground measurements have been used to validate the computer model and it has been shown that for an advancing coalface under normal production conditions that the program predicts the climate to within 1°C of the measured conditions. This paper outlines a number of methods available to improve climatic conditions on longwall faces. The coalface temperature prediction program is used to quantify the effects of these methods on the climatic conditions for a model coalface and a comparison is given. In conclusion a cool¬ing strategy for longwall faces is outlined.

From the MAP3S Precipitation Chemistry Network data bank five years of data from January 1, 1977 to December 31, 1981 have been analyzed. No definite trend has been observed in the concentrations and the total depositions in the analyzed period. Comparison between the weekly and event samples show that the weekly samples could underestimate the total deposition. Preliminary results show that there is a reasonably good correlation between the precipitation composition and the emissions feeding the air in which the precipitation is formed.

In the past, most people have associated gold scams with the sale of non-existent gold mines, an undivided interest in unmined ore or the sale of gold-plated lead bars. These scams are still available to those who want to speculate. Now, though, the mining industry is plagued with a new type of con artist. Many of the new scams involve large, well established mining companies being victimized. Nearly all legitimate mining companies are in search of good mining prospects. This makes them susceptible to modern day con artists. Many professionals from the mining and petrochemical industries are out of work. Some of them have gotten involved with scams or activities that border on the criminal. Mining companies are losing millions of dollars each year to scams. Some of these scams involve venture-capital fraud. Some involve fraudulent mining proposals. And some involve unqualified individuals who are providing services by the precious metals industry. The author estimates that mining scams may be costing precious metals companies as much in dollar losses annually as employee theft. Employee theft is at an all time high, but so are gold scams. Since January of 1990, the au¬thor has been involved in gold theft investigations in which more than $1 million in gold product has been stolen by employees. In the past, most of the gold mine scam operators have concentrated on the general public, which is generally ignorant of basic mining procedures and practices. A scam artist would tell someone from your neighborhood that they have a wonderful underground mine. It produces 62.2 kg/t (2000 oz per st) of gold ore. Your neighbor might think that sounds like a very good investment. Those involved in the mining industry know better.

This paper was presented at the ‘17th U. S. Introduction The purpose of this paper is to present a viable method of reinforcing rock pillars by utilizing fully grouted reinforcing steel and a cement- fly ash mortar. Although the fully bonded bolt concept is not new as exemplified by the present widespread use of resin bolts within United States mines and by the use of cement grouted reinforcing used as back pins in the Kiruna Iron Ore Mine in northern Sweden, (1)(2)the method of stabilizing mine pillars with fully bonded reinforcing is new. This method, called the "grout-rebar system", was first incorporated at St. Joe Minerals Corporation's Fletcher Mine in December of 1972. The system was used on an emergency basis before extensive research on the mechanics of the system could be completed. Since Decmeber of 1972, however, approximately 206 pillars have been reinforced at Fletcher and the system is currently being used on a regular basis at two other St. Joe mines and at two competitor mines in the area. Basically, this paper is a case study of the efforts, research and results of utilizing the grout-rebar system, on a selective basis, at the Fletcher Mine. In addition to information about the system, this paper will explain in detail the three rock mechanics instruments developed by St. Joe and used to measure and monitor rock movement to validate the group-rebar system.

In a recent issue of the Mining Congress Journal, J. L. Gilliland discussed the relationship of air quality criteria, standards, and regu¬lations (1). As he pointed out, The Secretary of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare is charged with issuing "Air Quality Criteria" which are statements concerning the concentration-effects relationship of an air pollutant. These "criteria" provide the states with a basis for their air quality "standards," which may lead in turn to emission "regulations." He further cites a list of major factors described by the National Air Pollution Control Administration, which must be considered in developing criteria. These are: properties of pollution; responses; measurement methods; exposure parameters; and characteristics of receptors. Although we briefly discuss the first two items, the principal concern of this paper is with the third item, the methods of measurements. In attempting to define responses, it has proven surprisingly difficult to establish a clear-cut cause-effect relationship between air pollutants and impairment of health. It is perhaps not too surprising that the ecological approach currently in fashion seems to be a much more powerful tool in defining cause-effects relationships. Without belaboring the point, we would like to point out that establishing such cause-effect relationships have tremendous legal and financial implications e.g., consider the possible establishment of such a relationship between pollution and inadvertent weather modification.

Organic matter commonly associated with Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) lead-zinc deposits may be used to assess the burial/thermal history of host rocks and sulfides. Organic matter may also have been involved in the genesis of H2S required to precipitate sulfide ores. Pine Point, Northwest Territories, Canada, provides an example. Located on the south shore of Great Slave Lake, Pine Point is an operating world class deposit which has produced 58 million tons of ore containing 3.0 percent Pb and 6.1 percent Zn from more than 40 Individual orebodies. Well-documented paleokarst features in a Middle Devonian carbonate complex are the main ore hosts. Sphalerite and galena ores are mainly open space fillings, and, from fluid inclusion studies, were deposited from saline fluids at temperatures of up to at least 100°C. Forms of organic matter occurring in the Pine Point barrier-reef complex Include indigenous organic matter, heavy oil and bitumen. Based on numerous geochemical criteria, it is clear that heavy oils and bitumens were derived locally from indigenous organic matter. The geochemical character of the Indigenous organic matter demonstrates that the barrier-reef complex is immature to marginally mature with respect to petroleum generation, and has not been heated above about 60°C maximum. Thus sphalerite with fluid inclusions that yield temperatures up to about 100°C represents former thermal anomalies. Bitumen is of two main forms at Pine Point: widespread soft, tarry material soluble in organic solvents (unaltered bitumen); and hard, brittle, glassy material that is mostly solvent-insoluble, and associated with white sparry dolomite and lead-zinc ores (altered bitumen). There are also partly altered bitumens. Unaltered bitumens have atomic H/C ratios of about 1.4, sulfur contents averaging 7.8 percent, and sulfur isotope ratios 634S) of approximately +4.6 per mil. Altered bitumens have atomic H/C ratios averaging 1.02, sulfur contents averaging 22 percent, and 634S values of about +12.9 per mil. These data and the organic geochemical character of a large suite of bitumen samples analyzed, strongly support the concept that some bitumen has been involved in the thermochemical reduction of sulfate to produce the H2S required to precipitate the ores. Mass-balance calculations indicate that the amount and degree of alteration of bitumen is more than enough to account for the reduced sulfur species deposited as metallic sulfides at Pine Point. MVT deposits, including Pine Point, seem to require the coincidence of available metallic Ions, pre-existing pore space, and a precipitating agent. A close look at organic matter in more MVT settings may outline trends in distribution or alteration which can be used as indicators of past thermal environments and processes of ore deposition.

A trend towards the independent verification of sustainable development reporting and assessment using third party certification can be discerned in the global minerals industry. Various codes that provide for the third party assessment and certification of performance against a range of externally developed sustainability indicators are being adopted by minerals companies, and there is also considerable activity in the broader area of third party assurance. Using a sociological approach, this paper examines the reasons why third party certification schemes are appearing in the minerals industry to address sustainable development imperatives in preference to other forms of regulation, and considers the broader implications of this trend. Data are drawn from a series of qualitative, in-depth interviews conducted with some of the key players in the development and adoption of certification schemes in the minerals industry, with executive managers of a range of large mining corporations, with representatives of global non-governmental organizations that are active in mining issues, and with government officers responsible for the regulation of mining corporations in Australia. Factors responsible for the emergence of the new certification schemes include: increasing demands from stakeholders for greater credibility in reporting against sustainable development indicators; broader contextual factors including globalization and neoliberal policies; and issues relating to trust and risk. Using insights from our research, and the work of others in this field, we identify some of the critical features of a credible third party certification scheme, and note some of the challenges for the design and implementation of such schemes. We conclude by discussing some of the broader implications of third party certification as an emerging form of regulation in the minerals industry.

The heap leaching process has developed into a low-cost method for recovering copper, gold and silver from large and small deposits of low-grade ore. The earliest known heap leaching process with chemicals occurred in about 1752 and is attributed to Spanish miners percolating acid solutions through large heaps of oxide copper ore on the banks of the Rio Tinto (Ran Zyl, et al., 1988). In 1969, US Bureau of Mines research¬ers proposed the use of dilute alkaline cyanide solutions as a low-cost means for recovering gold values from low-grade ore containing micrometer-sized particles of gold (Miners News, 1991). The modern-day heap leaching process typically involves the percolation of leach solutions through controlled lifts of stacked, low-grade ore (crushed, aggomerated or run-of-mine) in a heap for chemical extraction of precious and base metals into solution (Fig. 1). The enriched (pregnant) solution is collected by gravity flow in lined basins, sumps and ponds for processing and recovery of the target metals (copper, gold and silver). The barren solution from the recovery facilities is recirculated to the heap, along with chemical reagents and makeup water, for containment of all process solutions in an enclosed and environmentally sound system. This involves the use of low-permeability liner systems beneath the heap leach stacks to maximize solution recovery and protect the underlying ground water (Fig. 1). This article discusses the typical heap leach liner systems currently used by mining companies in North America. The most successful heap leach pad liner systems from past precious metal operations generally include an underlying, low-permeability soil bedding material; a geomembrane liner, and an overlying protective cover fill.
