The purpose of the study was to investigate the factors which affect the performance of the loading and hauling fleet and also find possible solutions to eliminate these factors, so that the daily tonnages required could be produced .This is due to the high demand of manganese required by clients. The investigation strongly focuses on the performances of the three 777D Caterpillar trucks and the R984 C Liebherr Litronic Hydraulic Excavator. In the content of the study, these machines are used to remove and move the low grade manganese (also known as the top cut overburden) in order to expose the high grade manganese from north pit to dump 4. The objectives of the project were to determine the actual performance of the loading and hauling fleet per shift, compare the actual and the theoretical performance and identify areas that need to be improved. To achieve the goals set for the project, a number of activities were carried out. ?Perform a time study to compare the performance of the loading and hauling fleet with the manufacturer specifications ?Match the equipments analysis for Loading and hauling ?Road conditions analysis ?Rolling resistance and Road Gradients analysis ?Operating cost analysis.

A risk evaluation model has been developed, that enables the quantification of expected injuries and economic losses resulting from rockfalls associated with a support system in a given geotechnical environment. This enables the comparison of different support systems based on the expected frequency of injuries and the total cost of the support system, including the expected economic losses. The model takes into consideration the variability in joint orientations and joint strength within the geotechnical environment and the variability and quality of support systems. The quantification of the benefits of other rockfall risk-mitigating strategies, such as the effectiveness of barring or monitoring, are also incorporated in the model. The risk model is described in this paper and the validation of the model and case studies are described in Part II.

It is commonly accepted that three types of aquifers exist in the Bushveld Complex: (a) alluvial aquifers in areas of river courses, (b) weathered bedrock aquifer formed by the in-situ weathering of the bedrocks, (c) fractured aquifers underlying the weathered aquifers controlled by the regional and local fracturing of the crystalline rocks. Hydrogeological studies conducted in the Critical Zone of the Bushveld Complex in the western limb show that the UG2 pyroxenite layer is of a particular interest and has a unique aquifer property. It yields much of the groundwater inflow into some mines and can be classified as the most important aquifer in the vicinity of the mining zone. The UG2 pyroxenite aquifer is restricted to the dipping UG2 pyroxenite unit. The unit weathers more intensely than the surrounding norites and anorthosites and is characterized by deeper weathering horizons (two to three times deeper than the surrounding rocks). For much of the UG2 mining area between depths of 35 ? 80 m, stoping of the UG2 takes place approximately 5 ? 7 m below the UG2 pyroxenite aquifer, and usually there is no groundwater inflow into the mine workings. However, unsealed deep exploration boreholes intersecting the UG2 pyroxenite and reaching underground mine workings, or mine roofbolts penetrating the weathered pyroxenite aquifer from underneath, can result in significant groundwater inflows into the underground workings. The reason as to why the UG2 pyroxenite weathers more than the norites and anorthosites has not been fully studied but is suspected to be due to the bedding planes of the unit and mineralogical composition of the particular pyroxenes forming the unit, which result in preferential physical and chemical weathering under atmospheric conditions. The weathered pyroxenes form sand-sized, rounded grains with improved effective porosity and permeability suitable for the storage and passage of groundwater. The orientation of the pyroxenite aquifer can easily be determined as it dips with the Bushveld layered strata. No-flow boundaries can be assumed on the hanging- and footwall of the pyroxenite aquifer and the flow rates can be estimated using 2-dimentional analytical equations. However, this must be confirmed with strong conceptual models since the existence of a fracture network connecting the pyroxenite aquifer with the overlying weathered and/or underling fractured aquifers can complicate the system, lowering the accuracy of analytical models and necessitating the utilization of numerical models.

Ceramic filtration plates are used for dewatering slurries with high solid concentrations and particles in the size range of 30 μm to 150 μm. After extensive operating times, the ceramic filter plates at Minas Rio in Brazil begin to blind due to the precipitation of barium sulphate on the surface of the ceramic filter plate, which reduces the overall efficiency of the filtration process. Further research is needed to identify the barium precipitate phases on the blocked filter plates and its thermodynamic and kinetic behaviour in the system. A crystallography analysis was performed on the sample and the results showed that there are two different sets of precipitates formed on the filter plate: grey crystals which were large and scatted on the filter plate and red micro crystals that covered the entire surface of the filter plate. The red microcrystals on the sample were identified with XRD, which indicated that the sample contained barium sulphate in the mineral form barite. Experiments were conducted to determine the optimum conditions under which barium precipitation will occur. The conditions tested as a possible driving force for barium sulphate precipitation were the effect of temperature, pH and concentration. The pH and temperature ranges were pushed to both the lower and higher boundaries. The effect of temperatures as low as 15oC was studied and pH levels of 7 and upwards. The first nuclei started appearing at a pH of 7 but significant growth is promoted at higher pH levels. The X-Ray diffraction analysis confirmed the phase of the precipitates formed, and the orthorhombic crystallographic structure formed is a characteristic of barium sulphate. The advancement in Information Technology has resulted in a change in workflow practice in our Mineral Resource Management (MRM) offices on the mines and at our corporate office. This paper discusses the AngloGold approach in defining an IT strategy for MRM, a brief overview of systems usage and benefits. AngloGold has gone through a transformation phase and has positioned itself as a world-class, low cost producer. To support this objective, an initiative has been launched to provide the MRM division with an integrated MRM technical suite of systems with support of a Management Information System. Technical systems for a tabular orebody are not freely available and hence it took AngloGold almost seven years and a significant amount of capital to develop an integrated suite of technical systems. AngloGold MRM IT adopted the typical Zachman framework (value chain) approach in the analysis process and formulated the final deliverable in terms of AngloGold’s strategy. Major benefits have been realized through the ability to change planning scenarios in a short period of time and hence be able to increase reserves and NPV. The development of MRIS, which will become the flagship in AngloGold’s portfolio of systems is in phase two and this system will allow AngloGold to publish Resources and Reserves as per SAMREC and the JORC Code at will. The availability of information at all levels of the operations has made making decisions easier and hence some specialized reports such as the Basic Mining Equation were developed from the Corporate Data warehouse and from the MRM reporting database. Decision Support Systems(DSS) such as Business Objects and Oracle Express are now being used to assist in the process. The decision to use Business Objects to replace SAS reporting as the core reporting tool has resulted in the empowerment of the user and major cost saving as far as the use of consultants to set up standard reports.

The advent of relatively cheap computing power has precipitated a rapid growth of computer usage in the mining industry. In order to obtain most benefit from this development a need is recognised for the future mining graduate to be trained in computer literacy. This paper outlines the type of training required and describes progress to date with such a programme at the University of the Witwatersrand. Certain challenges concerning the teaching effort are discussed.

In recent years, the grade of silica in zinc concentrate has increased due to the degradation of zinc content and the increase in impurity content in natural ores. It implies that the development of silica removal technology from zinc concentrate is necessary to solve problems in the smelting process caused by the high content of silica in zinc concentrate. In this paper, the authors investigated the silica removal processes from silica-rich zinc concentrate by mineral processing approaches such as re-grinding and flotation. This study focused on the pulverisation process as a pretreatment for the investigation of individual minerals' liberation from the silica-rich zinc concentrates using different kinds of pulverisers. Flotation experiments were performed to separate silica and zinc concentrate from the pulverizsd feed sample using a pH regulator (NaOH), activator (CuSO4), collecting agent (PAX), and foaming agent (DOW froth 250). Results showed that the liberation rate of silica (SiO2) was reached 75% from 13% by pulverisation in an attritor with a 2 mm ball in diameter, while silica accumulated in a fraction over 20 mm in size. Flotation experiments indicated that silica removal efficiency was achieved by 44% from + 20 mm fraction obtained from pulverisation whereas the grade of silica in froth reached 1.85 mass% from 4.5 mass%. Results indicate that silica could selectively separate from silica-rich zinc concentrate, and 99.8 % zinc recovery is achieved under the studied conditions. "Biological cementation of the Mandena heavy mineral sand deposit in Madagascar was causing difficulty in dredge mining and hence in planning and control of production rates. An investigation was initiated to better evaluate the geotechnical properties of the orebody by defining the distribution and geotechnical properties of the cemented strata, in order to generate a site-specific geotechnical model for the deposit. The geotechnical characterization was developed by an integrated approach using several ground investigation techniques such as piezocone (CPTu) testing, geotechnical drilling, standard penetration testing (SPT), as well as laboratory testing. The final outcomes of the investigation included a 3D geotechnical model showing the distribution and extent of the cemented areas, as well as the typical geotechnical parameter ranges associated with each of the defined geotechnical units. The interpretations developed were incorporated into the mine and production planning to ultimately optimize operational planning and control.IntroductionQIT Madagascar Minerals (QMM) is a heavy mineral sand mining operation at Mandena, near Fort Dauphin in Madagascar. During the final planning and commissioning stages of the project, the need to fully characterize the unusual geotechnical conditions was identified and a geotechnical investigation became necessary.Nature of the problemDuring the commissioning phase it was found that mining production was being hampered by biologically cemented/indurated layers encountered within the sands. Closer inspection of the indurated horizons in the dredging face revealed that these layers contain a high loading of bacteria and fungi. It appears that the bacteria produce an extracellular (outside the cell) polysaccharide (i.e. sugar and carbon salts), which form a gelling biofilm to trap nutrients. There are a number of different bacteria. The fungi, on the other hand, produce a network of fibrous strands that bind the sand grains together. Thus both bacteria and fungi probably contribute to the ‘apparent cohesive’ strength or binding of the indurated sand (Lynn, 2008)."

The production of ferrochrome alloy from chromium bearing chromite ores is conducted at high temperature under highly reducing conditions. However, albeit completely unintended, it is impossible to completely exclude oxygen from all high temperature process steps, with the corresponding possibility arising for the generation of small amounts of Cr(VI) species. Certain Cr(VI) species are regarded as a carcinogenic, with specifically airborne exposure to these Cr(VI) species being associated with cancer of the respiratory system. With approximately three-quarters of the world?s viable chromite ore reserves located in South Africa, and annual ferrochrome production approaching almost half of total annual global output, aspects of Cr(VI) generation and control are of particular relevance and importance to the local industry, and naturally to the global industry at large. This paper seeks to examine theoretical and practical aspects associated with Cr(VI)generation (based largely on experience within the local South African industry, but considered to be generally encountered in the broader global industry context), together with mitigating measures that can be applied within the context of the production processes. From the discussions it is clear that significant improvements in various Cr(VI)-related aspects have been made by the South African ferrochrome industry. However, it is also evident that several areas of uncertainty still exist, which require further research in order to better quantify risks and enhance the efficacy of mitigating steps. Now a new generation of computerized drill rigs has been launched and they are based on modern standard PC-computer technology. The rigs have been well embraced by the market and more than 100 units have left the assembly line. The new generation has taken a quantum leap forward with respect to drilling accuracy, logging capabilities, reduction of manpower in some types and serviceability compared to the previous generation of drill rigs. The Can bus technology, well proven in the automobile products, is the backbone in the new generation control system of Atlas Copco. The short-term development is now focused on establishing this new automation platform on other product lines of Atlas Copco products. The long-term objectives is to offer the mining industry Atlas Copco products with one common automation platform. Essential for Atlas Copcois to contribute to the work with the on-going Data Exchange standard between mining machines and mining computer systems (IREDES). Our belief is that an accepted standard will make mine automation programs affordable for a wider base of the mining industry, because of the possibilities to a cost effective integration of different equipment with a minimum of system integration problems and machine specific interfaces.

Rare earth elements (REE) are vital components in modern electronics and green technology products. Supply is tight and global demand is expected to increase, leading to high risk for the economic and national security of countries largely dependent upon foreign supplies. Recycling of REE from consumer and industrial waste materials is a possible way to help meet demand. We have shown previously that biohydrometallurgy can play an economically and environmentally sustainable role in REE recycling, particularly if agriculture or food wastes are used to produce organic acid bioleaching agents. A challenge for organic acid-based bioleaching is the incomplete conversion of the carbon substrate to an optimal organic acid biolixiviant with high REE extraction capability from a variety of REE-containing feedstocks (e.g., mining wastes, magnets from end of life products, spent batteries, etc.). To help meet this challenge a metabolic model was developed for Gluconobacter oxydans to identify options for improving sugar conversion to organic acids. Model predictions were consistent with laboratory data for the microbial consumption of glucose and production of gluconic acid, and suggested that providing growth conditions with relatively high C:N molar ratios could result in lower pH biolixiviant production and thus improve bioleaching. The West Wits Line first began yielding gold in the mid-1930s and is among South Africa's leading gold-producing areas. Gold mining operations are carried out amidst the occurrence of seismic events which cause both damage to underground excavations and injury and loss of life to production personnel. The feasibility of establishing a system to minotor the seismicity on all the Gold Fields mines was investigated during the early 1980s. This led to the establishment of a centralized seismic network in 1981. The system was structured around three major objectives. It uses Perkin Elmer (now Concurrent Computer Corporation) 16 and 32 bit mini-computers. The hardware in use at both the central and remote sites is outlined, giving a good insight into the role of computers in the system. The system software reveals the fast flow of data through the network; it can be divided into three categories: (1) data logging and transmission - remote sites, (2) data capture and communications - central site, (3) applications and research - central site. Several examples are given which show how the system is measuring up to its objectives. These case studies also indicate how the computers are effective in representing the seismic data collected. It is concluded that the use of computers enables the pin-pointing of seismic events on the West Wits Line within about 3 -4 minutes of their occurrence. The choice of hardware is largely dependent on the objectives of system, and the Gold Fields Network has chosen mini-computers because of the speed of communication and the large amount of data and storage required for research applications.

By use of models based on the South African gold-mining industry, analyses are made of the effects of changes in the mining tax structure on the .State's tax income from potential new mines; also on the percentage of such mines likely. to be proceeded with. The percentage is affected by the correlation between changes in taxation and in the flotation pay limits !or new mines. It is shown that the State stands to gain both directly and indirectly from raising the level of the capital allowance and from its extension to all mines; and that the reduced taxation resulting from a lowering of the discriminatory high tax formula for the gold mines, would, in respect of potential new mines, be compensated for by a significant increase in the percentage of such mines that would be proceeded with.

"In platinum group metals (PGMs) smelting, the slag-to-matte ratios are very high (approximately 4:1 to 9:1). The slag temperature therefore has a strong influence on matte temperature, which is a continual concern due to the low matte melting temperature and its resultant high superheat. Maintaining a stable slag temperature is therefore a critical safety and operational issue. This project aims to improve the understanding of the slag bath temperature drivers so that a more effective slag bath temperature control strategy can be implemented.With the aim of developing a multiphysics model of the furnace, extensive data analysis was performed to develop an in-depth understanding of the process before the start of modelling work. In this work, the effect of fluctuating furnace feed composition on slag temperature was examined. The results are based on equilibrium calculations using FactSage, implemented with ChemApp.A method was developed, using an equilibrium calculation at 25°C, to convert the available chemical assays to approximate mineralogical assays in order to determine the feed enthalpies. Actual 2013 furnace feed data was used and the average specific energy requirement to produce slag and matte at 1600°C was calculated to be 671 kWh/t concentrate. The furnace energy input was then kept constant, and it was found that the slag temperature varies significantly as a function of the feed composition. These results were compared to actual slag temperatures measured on site. It was found that close management of the furnace energy balance is important for maintaining a stable slag temperature."

The evaluation of stress distributions and deformations in the vicinity of tabular mine layouts has been carried out routinely for many years using the displacement discontinuity boundary element method (DDM). In this approach, mine layouts are approximated as irregular shaped planar cracks (or slits) where the ?width? of the crack, corresponding to the excavation height, is assumed to be negligible compared to the in-plane, lateral dimensions. Early implementations of this approach have employed square element tessellations with constant displacement discontinuity component values. This is generally restrictive when considering the analysis of irregular pillar layouts or the intersection of fault planes with excavations. This paper describes a general revision of this approach in which triangular or quadrilateral element shapes are introduced in conjunction with higher order variations of the displacement discontinuity shape functions. This facilitates an accurate evaluation of detailed stress and displacement components close to excavation surfaces and allows the investigation of local damage and failure behaviour associated with particular geological structures such as weak parting bands or weak layers. A method to embed these features in an efficient and accurate multi-level solution scheme is described. This formulation can be extended to allow the analysis of shallow-depth pillar layout problems, facilitating the assessment of the interactive response and stability of shallow depth pillar layouts. A simple deformation model is introduced to facilitate the assessment of pillar failure and bursting potential in shallow mine layouts. The computational techniques described here have been implemented in a computer code called TEXAN (Tabular EXcavation ANalyser) and are illustrated by the simulation of a particular multiple reef pillar mining problem in a shallow depth platinum mine.

A wide range of drill holes and process streams are sampled for resource estimation, grade control and contractual purposes in the minerals industry. However, despite the availability of training courses, conferences and both national and international standards on correct sampling practices, it is still surprising how often little attention is given to ensuring that representative samples are collected for analysis. The reason for this is that the responsibility for sampling is often entrusted to personnel who do not appreciate the significance and importance of sampling, with cost being the main driving force rather than whether the sample is representative of the material from which it was extracted. This seriously undermines the precision and accuracy of the analyses subsequently generated and can render the analysis process a total waste of time and money and expose mining companies to serious, potential, financial losses. Company management needs to reverse this situation and ensure that sampling is given the attention it deserves to generate representative samples for analysis.

The paper describes the design options available for the simultaneous production of liquid sulphur dioxide, via cryogenic condensation, and sulphuric acid in a sulphur-burning sulphuric acid plant. The impact of the operating conditions of the cryogenic condensation on plant capital and operating costs are discussed, with the main focus on the optimization of the most important economic and operative drivers of the non-ferrous mining industry, such as energy efficiency, reliability, and availability. A case history relevant to an integrated sulphurburning plant producing liquid sulphur dioxide and sulphuric acid, recently started up in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is described. There is an ample supply of all the raw materials required for the future development of the industry, with the possible exception of coking coal. Improved methods of coke production are being developed. It is anticipated that steel production will reach eight million tons per annum by 1980. New techniques and equipment for refining steel will be installed, together with new processing equipment. The most serious problem now facing the industry is the acute shortage of labour.

Computational modelling methods and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) were employed to investigate the interaction of a pyrite surface with thiol collectors. Modelling work was conducted in the presence and absence of water. Microcalorimetry was employed to investigate the resultant energy of interaction pyrite as a result of mineral-collector interactions. Sodium ethyl xanthate (SEX), diethyldithiocarbamate (DTC) and diethyl dithiophosphate (DTP) were investigated in this study. The results showed that the calculated surface energies and morphologies for FeS2 showed that (100) and (111) are the most stable surfaces. The morphology also indicated the appearance of the (100) and (111) surface facets and no presence of others. The calculated adsorption energies between thiol collectors and the pyrite surface were always more exothermic than the experimentally determined ones. When comparing different ligand types with the same alkyl chain length, the heat of adsorption of diethyl-DTC was greater than that of ethyl xanthate and diethyl-DTP for pyrite. Experimentally, the diethyl DTP barely adsorbed onto the pyrite surface and this may be due to a different mechanism of action. In computational calculations, water adsorption was found to reduce the reactivity of the Fe atom for the interaction with thiol collectors, and bring the adsorption energies closer to the magnitude of the experimental values. Tarkwa Gold Mine is owned by Gold Fields Ghana, IAMGOLD and the Government of the Republic of Ghana in a 71%, 19% and 10% ratio. The mine is operated by Gold Fields Ghana. This large, low-grade, open pit, gold mining operation is located in Tarkwa, in the Western Region of Ghana, approximately 320 kilometres by road, west of Accra, the capital of Ghana, West Africa. In the Financial year ended June 2007, the operation mined a total of 108 million tonnes of which 22 million tonnes was ore. The mined ore is processed through three gyratory crushers supplying two heap leach pads (North and South) and a carbon-in-leach (CIL) plant. Before the 6 Sigma project commenced, the current fragmentation was resulting in sub-optimal feed size to these crushers. It was decided to use 6 Sigma methodology to improve the fragmentation. A defect was defined as a fragmentation analysis indicating less than 95% passing 750 mm. The objective was to improve fragmentation in order to achieve a constant throughput to the north heap leach crusher of 1500 t/hr, a 5% increase in pit loading efficiency and a 50% decrease in rock breaker hours, equipment damage costs and in-pit sheeting costs respectively. However, this was not to be achieved at the expense of grade control as Tarkwa is exploiting a low grade, high volume deposit and therefore ore dilution must be kept to a minimum. This paper is intended to take the reader through the various 6 Sigma phases of the project (Define ? Measure ? Analyse ? Improve ? Control) which have resulted in a 10% reduction in loading times, of which half has been attributed to improved fragmentation, as well as a substantial increase in blasted stocks. The focus has been on both drilling and blasting parameters as both processes had to be taken into account. These parameters are technical but personnel factors were also identified and dealt with as they arose. In order to measure the impact of any change in the process parameters on the fragmentation size distribution, cameras have been acquired. One has been installed looking into the bowl of the north crusher and the other one was dedicated to field observation, of individual blasts. Both are used for on-going fragmentation analysis. At Tarkwa, mining efficiency is strongly dependent on good fragmentation as well as the presence of un-blasted ?toes? on the pit floors. Crusher throughput depends on an acceptable ore fragment size. Compliance to plan with regards to actual hole depths was temporarily monitored by manual hole dipping, but, this is now being replaced with a fully automated Drill Data Management system developed by Sandvik and Modular Mining. The Six Sigma methodologies, using control charts based on data collected in the field, allowed the mine to improve methods with regards to the control of blasted material. It also enforced the implementation of a quality control programme encompassing the entire Drill and Blast process.
