Jointed rock slopes are generally stable, as there is no freedom of movement for blocks of rock. In an open- pit mining environment, blasting opens up space into which blocks of rock can fail, resulting in the common occurrence of slope failure. Prior to the blasting of a trim pattern, the immediate highwall is scaled, where loose rock material is removed by means of a mechanical scaler. As mining of the pit progresses, the height of the scaled highwall from the pit floor progressively increases. These highwalls are never scaled again for the remainder of the pit life, and time-dependant deterioration contributes to these highwalls becoming subject to rockfall and, sometimes, slope failure. This paper documents the development of a South African innovation, a remote-controlled mechanical highwall scaler, a world first for the mining industry. The scaler will enable open-pit highwalls to be scaled from crest to toe whenever the need arises. It will reduce the risk associated with highwalls and deliver on the Anglo American promise of producing safe, profitable platinum.

In a FeNi electric arc furnace, the physical properties of the slag (chemistry, viscosity, liquid/solid/gas ratio) are of crucial importance in controlling the efficiency of the process. In this paper, we studied the slag crystallised on the walls of a semi-industrial furnace (freeze-lining), the slag rising through the burden during foaming phenomena, and the casted slag. The freeze-lining is the layer of oxides that crystallises on the refractory wall of a furnace, protecting it from chemical and mechanical aggression. It records changes in furnace conditions (slag chemistry, temperature, oxygen fugacity), which makes it possible to observe the impact of these elements. In the high reduction test, the freezing lining is composed of magnesian olivine. Switching to a low reduction process increases the Fe content of the olivine and causes orthopyroxene to appear, making the freeze-lining mechanically and thermally weak. Thermal incidents in the furnace cause significant slag foaming. This foaming is produced by a massive crystallisation of the olivine (due to the drop in temperature), and inducing an exponential increase in viscosity, preventing the free circulation of gases. These foaming episodes are also recorded in the freeze lining and form layers rich in gas bubbles, and therefore mechanically fragile. The slag casted and cooled in a ladle allows the first steps of slag crystallisation to be studied. Olivine is the liquidus phase, with a magnesium-rich core and an iron-enriched rim, contemporaneous with the orthopyroxene phase. The habitus of these phases is very similar to that found in komatiites for the same minerals. FeNi slag is therefore an industrial analogue that is easy to study and compare to komatiites. Due to grade estimation uncertainty, two statistical errors can occur. The Type I error is where material is classified as ore and mined, despite the true value being below the break-even grade. This material is dilution. The Type II error is where the material is estimated to be below the cut-off grade and is classified as waste, although the true grade is actually above the break-even grade. This material is not mined and is lost. The uncertainty was assumed to follow a normal distribution in a previous study. For this study, estimated block values are compared to those determined after mining (the best estimate of the true grade). This actual data from four mines shows that the uncertainty follows a Laplace. There is no single solution regarding adjusting the cut-off grade away from the break-even grade, considering estimation uncertainty, that could be applied to all gold mines. However, adjusting the cut-off grade downwards (up to 22% for one mine) is noted when optimizing the profit considering grade uncertainties. This type of adjustment could open up significant mining areas and extend the life of the mine.

RMR, Rock Mass Rating, is one of the famous rock classifications. However, RMR was proposed empirically and absolutely depends on the experience of engineer. Therefore, engineering verification is needed for RMR system itself. In this study, the factor analysis and the multiple regressions were performed in order to evaluate the validity of rating factor of RMR. Also numerical analysis was carried out using the FLAC based on Taguchi method, a kind of robust designs, in order to examine the support of tunnel corresponding to the revaluated RMR. As the result of the analysis new RMR was proposed with five minimized factors of intact rock strength, RQD, spacing, persistence and roughness of discontinuities. RMR est un des procédés de la classification du roc qui sont généralement utilisés. Mais RMR s'appuie sur l'expérience et se absolument soumet à l'expérience d'ingénieur. Il est donc nécessaire de vér- ifier techniquement sur le système de RMR. Dans cet étude, on met à exécution l'analyse du facteur et la régression multiple pour évaluer la convenance de la cause de classification de RMR. De même, pour évaluer le support du tunnel selon RMR réestimé, on a exécuté l'analyse de la valeur numérique par FLAC qui se base sur la lois de Taguchi, laquelle est une sorte de système du plan robuste. Selon le résultat de la régression multiple, il est proposé de nouvel RMR à partir de l’intensité de roc intact, RQD, l'espacement, la persistance et la rugosité RMR ist eine der weit benutzten klassifikationen fuer die felsenstuecke. Da aber RMR erfahrungs- maessig ist und ueberwiegend von der persoenlichen Erfahrung eines Ingenieurs entschieden ist, ist es mit Sicherheit notwendig, das RMR-system selbst technisch zu ueberpruefen. In diesem studium waren die faktorenanalyse und mehrfachregressionanalyse durchgefuehrt, um die gerechtigkeit der klassifikationenfaktoren von RMR zu bewerten. Ferner war noch eine numerische analyse mit ben- utzung von FLAC aufgrund der Taguchi-methode, eine art technik der robust design, eingefuehrt, um die tunnelstuetze infolge der neubewertung von RMR unterzusuchen. One of the important facets of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy is its service to its members. One way of achieving this objective is by pursuing an active branch structure. In this Spotlight, Richard Beck, Holder of the Regional Development Portfolio, gives the aims of the Institute's branches, with a short note on each branch prepared by the regional chairman. Aims of the Branches: The primary aims of the Branches of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy are those of the Institute itself: to further the interest of its members, to uphold the status of the mining and metallurgical profession, and to promote the image of mining and metallurgy. Beyond these 'high' objectives, the branches have a special function in providing a more intimate relationship between the Institute and its members. The branches enable members who live outside the Johannesburg area to participate in the affairs of the Institute to an extent that would not otherwise be possible and that they themselves can define. This is achieved through the holding of social events, colloquia, and visits.

Professor R. P. Plewman graduated with a B.Sc. in mining engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1943, after which he had two years of military service. Mr P. W. J. van Rensburg attended St Andrew's College in Grahamstown before proceeding to the University of the Witwatersrand, where he obtained a B.Sc. (Eng.) degree cum laude in mining and metal. lurgy at the end of 1942 and was awarded the Chamber of Mines Scholarship and Gold Medal. Dr M. G. Atmore, Deputy Technical Director of the Anglo American Corporation of South Mrica, is also Manpower and Education Adviser to the Chamber of Mines of South Mrica and a Visiting Professor at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London. Mr D. A. Vi1joen attended Queen's College, Queenstown, and then Rhodes University, where he gained a diploma in chemistry and a B. Comm. degree. Mr B. E. Protheroe, C.Eng., obtained a degree in Physical Metallurgy at University College, Cardiff, and an M.sc. in corrosion science from Swansea University. Mr N. J. Devine holds a B.Sc. in Metallurgical Engineering and a G.DE Mining Engineering, both from the University of the Witwatersrand. Dr Oskar Steffen graduated as a civil engineer at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1961, and obtained his master's degree in 1963.

"The complexity of the mining and metallurgical operations of Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines, Limited, has made it necessary to use computer-assisted planning techniques in order to maximize copper production and marginal contribution to profit. The most successful of the Group Production Scheduling systems utilized linear programming to optimize the concentrate routing only. This third-generation system was commissioned in March, 1968.It bad become necessary by March, 1970, to expand the long-term planning activities and to take into account new mines and new concentrate treatment schemes. Technical difficulties and manpower limitations made it impossible to expand the third-generation system, and it was decided to construct a new Group Production Scheduling system using only linear programming.The plant models in the new fourth-generation system are based on data available from the monthly reports of the metallurgical plants. The models consist of mass balances and empirical relationships. Matrix coefficient assignment and management reports are produced using a Report Generator Language designed for linear programming data files. The development of this system is an example of a user application of a system package."

JoughinMr Turgay Gurun, in presenting his paper, indicated that this simulator was no purely theoretical exercise, but that the model had been used in the design of crushing plants of capacities ranging from 3 000 tons per day to 66 000 tons per day, and that recently the design of a plant of capacity of 99 000 tons per day had been studied.The crushing plant simulator was an independent portion of a much more comprehensive simulator for the design of a. complete recovery plant. It would be possible to use each section of this simulator on its own, and simulators would be designed to cover flotation concentrates, cash flow analyses of the entire project, and so on.Each simulator would be backed by a comprehensive data bank. For example, the crushing plant simulator was backed by such a data bank which included the performance and cost data from five manufacturers for an average of 30 items of process and materials handling equipment each. This meant that data preparation involved generally less work than would be required for a manual calculation. On average, data preparation for one run took 30 minutes and three minutes of computer time on an IBM 360/40 completed the run. The model could be valuable as a design tool in that it allowed the designers an opportunity to make a thorough examination of many alternative designs. It was also of value to plant operators as it could be used to predict the consequences of operating decisions.This paper generated much interest and there were numerous questions and contributions, so many, in fact, that the discussion had to be cut short.It was pointed out by Mr K. F. Lane that crushing plants represented a very large capital investment. A plant designed for 40 000 tons per day at 98 per cent efficiency might well in practice be run at 50 000 tons per day at, say, 83 per cent efficiency. He asked how, therefore, their design could be investigated without building economic criteria into the model? The author conceded that this was a tender point. He would have liked to have given facilities for more variability of the metallurgical information. He pointed out, however, that while there was no overdesign for conservatism built into his system, some overdesign was inevitable as the performance characteristics given by the manufacturers were generally conservative. Also, in his system, if lower recovery was allowed for, the system would nut through more tonnage."

A knowledge of the steady-state mass and energy requirements of a particular process is essential to a determination of the economic feasibility of that process. A predictive simulation technique can be of great value in this respect. A versatile computer program based on a fundamental thermodynamic approach has been developed for the prediction of process requirements. The equilibrium composition of a multiphase system is determined by the technique of free energy minimization. Energy-balance calculations are performed using the appropriate thermodynamic data for the chemical species present in the composite materials used. All models for the process units under consideration are written in modular form, the output being calculated from the input and the specified operating conditions. The computer program is written in such a way that it can be used easily by anyone familiar with the processes involved, even though he may have no previous experience with a program of this type. The program is structured so as to facilitate the varying of one parameter without any alteration to the others, thus simplifying the investigation of the effects of any parameters considered to be important. The program has the advantage of being able to compare existing and new processes on the same basis, namely from the ores to the molten metal.

The reduction of fluxed and non-fluxed manganese, ores by ferromanganese silicide by W. P. CHANNON, B.Se. (Eng.), M.Sce. (Eng.) Wits. (Visitor) and J. B. SEE, B.Sce. Hons., Ph.D. (New South Wales), M.I.M., M.I.M.M. (Member) In South Africa, medium-carbonferromanganese is produced by the silicothermic reduction of slags containing MnO. Because of its importance in the production of refined ferromanganese, a study was made of the reaction between a premelted South African Mamatwan manganese ore and various ferromanganese silicide reducing alloys, with and without fluxing agents. Because the reaction is highly exothermic, temperature appeared to have little effect on the rates of manganese transfer to the metal and silicon transfer to the slag, and an apparent equilibrium was rapidly approached. Limits were determined for the favourable effects of fluxing additions, and manganese recoveries were found to decline as the ratio of CaO to MgO decreased as a result of the addition of basic flux. The recovery of manganese passed through a maximum, and subsequently decreased for variations in the ratio of alloy to ore. The results obtained, when used in conjunction with other physicochemical data related to this slag-metal system, suggest optimum slag compositions for the efficient manufacture of medium-carbon ferromanganese from Mamatwan ore.

Automation in mining requires accurate maps of road networks on site. Because roads on open-cut mines are dynamic in nature and continuously changing, manually updating road maps is tedious and error-prone. This paper investigates the possibility of automatically deriving an accurate representation of the road network using GPS data available from haul trucks operating on site. We present an overview of approaches proposed in literature and test the performance of publicly available methods on GPS data collected from trucks operating on site. Based on shortcomings seen in all tested algorithms, a post-processing step is developed which geometrically analyses the created road map for artefacts typical of free-drive areas on mine sites and significantly improves the quality of the final road network graph.

One of the most promising options for extraction of copper from low-grade chalcopyrite ores by heap leaching, however, chalcopyrite is refractory and suffers slow leaching kinetics and poor overall extraction due to formation of a passivation layer on the particles. The solution composition is believed to strongly affect the formation of this layer. This paper examines the effects of the major cationic species of Fe3+/2+, Mg2+, Cu2+, and Al3+ and the anionic SO42− species in acidic ferric sulfate media with a composition simulating recycle heap leach conditions. It was found that altering the sulfate, iron or aluminium concentration had significant effect on the copper extraction, the concentration of copper slightly influenced the extraction, and the amount of magnesium had no appreciable effect. Also, iron and aluminium caused a change in the sulfate concentration, and the sulfate ions had the greatest influence on the extraction of copper under recycle leach conditions

Smith in presenting his paper was that the planning aid outlined in the preprint was neither sophisticated nor complicated. However, it was a system which worked and was a very real way in which the computer was being used to assist miners, in particular, who at the present moment have very little experience in the use of computers.Mr Smith apologised for the fact that the editors of the paper had eliminated all reference to 'time'. This was very unfortunate because the essence of the system was that it saved time, which was one of the main points made in the paper.The operations being planned by this means cover the Rokana orebody which is a stratiform body mined by open stoping.The planner has to decide how much ore to mine from each base in each time period of his plan, that is, from three to four months hence to a year ahead. Normal procedure is for the planner to have discussions with the underground manager on some of the information he requires. The sort of information needed is (i) tramming limits for each face, (ii) extraction and grade factors, (iii) the present status of mining operations so that the planner knows where to start the new plan, and, (iv) details of any other mining consider¬ations that need to be incorporated in the plan.The objective at this point is to produce an initial plan for discussion purposes. All the information required comes from one sheet per stops and shows, inter alia, the stope identifier, the length along strike, the ore tonnage, the copper and cobalt grades and, finally, the extraction and grade factors.The program itself, among many other things, checks the data for validity, compatibility, completeness and credibility and prints error messages accordingly. Output from this system is in the form of a summary of production from each face, as well as giving the figures of ore reserve depletion. This summary indicates which slopes are to be mined in this time period, the original survey grades (copper and cobalt), the estimated production grades, how much is to be mined from each stope and the copper and cobalt production accordingly."

The fracturing and movement of rock that occurs in the vicinity of a stemmed borehole charge in open pit mining operations are described by examining the effects of the emitted stress waves – shock and elastic – and the expansion of high-pressure detonation product gases. Three principal modes of momentum transfer to fractured rock are identified, all linked to gas expansion work. This work can be delivered radially (burden), axially (stemming), and in the collar zone (cratering). Flyrock is generated under unusual combinations of blast parameters and rock properties. Although infrequent and seldom predictable, the generation of flyrock can nonetheless be interpreted and modelled in terms of the principal mechanisms of rock projection described in this study. The physical processes underlying these principal mechanisms are identified and will permit the development of predictive models for flyrock velocities.

Although online free cyanide analysers are widely available and used in gold leaching operations worldwide, reliable automated free cyanide concentration control is not consistently achieved in many of these operations. Effective cyanide concentration control is complex owing to amongst others, the long residence times and ore feed variations. Model Predictive Control (MPC) has been proven to provide superior cyanide concentration control over traditional proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control, leading to savings in operational costs and reduced leachable gold losses. In the first example reported in this paper, MPC has improved control of the free cyanide concentration by keeping it within the required range 73% of the time during testing, compared to the previous PID controller that only achieved this target 30% of the time. This represents a 143% improvement. Another example demonstrates a 22% reduction in cyanide usage as a result of using MPC. MPC functionality is rarely available on the programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and control systems installed at gold plants, hence it is implemented on a personal computer (PC) networked to the cyanide analyser and plant infrastructure. Mintek has developed an embedded MPC that installs into the Mintek Cynoprobe analyser, adding MPC functionality without the need for additional PC and network infrastructure, reducing installation costs. This allows plants to minimise their expenditure on additional infrastructure while gaining the benefits of superior MPC technology for multiple cyanide dosage points. This paper will present results showing that the embedded MPC performs as well as Mintek’s existing PC-based StarCS MPC controller, making it a viable alternative for infrastructure-constrained gold plants. "Although oxygen is widely employed as the oxidant of choice in gold leaching by cyanide, its low aqueous solubility presents some drawbacks in practical application; hydrogen peroxide has therefore been considered as a possible alternative. The aim of this investigation was to study the catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, which generates an oxidizing intermediate species, and to understand its effect on cyanide destruction. Operating conditions that facilitated the effective decomposition of hydrogen peroxide were established by varying the pH and catalyst type and concentration. The oxidizing intermediate, detected using an indirect technique, was found to be the hydroxyl radical (OH?). OH? is commonly generated in acidic solutions, but this work demonstrated that it is also produced at the alkaline pH values necessary for cyanide gold leaching. The effects of free and complexed iron and copper catalysts on the oxidation and consumption of hydrogen peroxide and cyanide were also investigated. It was shown that the cyano complexes of Fe(II) and Cu(I) are also effective as decomposition catalysts. Hydrogen peroxide concentrations above 0.01 M decreased the free cyanide concentration, which was attributed to the probable formation of the cyanate anion (CNO-). Although cyanide consumption increased due to its oxidation in the presence of OH?, excessive cyanide consumption in the presence of copper was attributed primarily to its complexation by the unstable copper(I) cyanide species. Rate constants for the decompositions of H2O2 and cyanide by ferrocyanide and copper cyanide were calculated; the latter was identified as being a better catalyst. The microbial leaching of metal sulfides is now an established biotechnological technology. Over the past 25 years, refinements in the engineering design of bioleaching processes have paralleled advances in our understanding of the diversity and role of the micro-organisms driving the process and the mechanisms by which micro-organisms enhance metal sulfide oxidation. Commercial success started with the treatment of refractory gold concentrates using mesophilic micro-organisms, followed by the development of tank bioleaching processes for the treatment of base metal concentrates. This was, initially, a mesophilic process with limited potential for recovery of copper from chalcopyrite concentrates due to slow rates and low copper extractions. The exploitation of thermophiles represents a major breakthrough in the development of bioleaching technology for the treatment of chalcopyrite-containing ores and concentrates. This development also opened the route to heap bioleaching of chalcopyrite ores, which is now a major focus of research programmes and piloting campaigns. This paper reviews the historical development of minerals bioleaching processes and gives an update on the current status of commercial tank and heap bioleach operations around the world.

A common method for the recovery of copper is by heap leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning. During solvent extraction, the solution is continuously recycled, and it is necessary to remove impurities that build up in the raffinate. For the process investigated in this study, the main impurities include Fe, Co, As, and Zn. Recovery of these impurities can provide economic benefits while adhering to legal and environmental constraints. Such impurities are often removed by precipitation utilizing a neutralizing agent, such as limestone or lime, but it is also possible to remove the impurities by sulfide precipitation. Sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) is used to selectively precipitate copper, arsenic, and zinc from a solvent-extraction raffinate stream.
