The Bureau of Mines developed a method for analyzing elastically certain types of protective cabs and canopies used on underground electric face equipment. The method is based on plane frame theory, and to be amenable to analysis by this method, cabs and canopies must contain symmetry about one plane. Additionally, protective structures with one or more top members in the long direction that do not frame into the columns should be approximately twice as long as they are wide and have two or more internal top members in the short direction. The assumptions and limitations of the plane frame method as regards analysis of three-dimensional cabs and canopies are discussed. A step-by-step procedure for application of the plane frame method is given, and three example canopies are analyzed following this procedure. Elastic strengths calculated for the three example canopies compare within 10 percent of those computed by the more complicated space frame analysis. Formulas employed in plane frame analysis of cabs and canopies are given in the appendixes.

"The economic features of coal mining must take into account the drain on the man power. Study over a recent 5-year period reveals an average yearly loss of 2,125 underground men, of whom 1,182 are killed by falls of roof and coal, and according to recent data compiled by the Bureau of Mines it is estimated that 54,000 men sustain lost—time disabling injuries from the same cause.Under normal activity of the mines approximately 50 lives are taken by falls of roof during every 10 days the mines are operated, or 5 persons are killed per day, which, at a compensation charge of $5,000 each, amounts to $25,000 per day. Add to this the similar number killed by causes other than by falls of roof and we have $50,000 as an approximate daily fatality charge for each day the mines operate. On the basis of 200 working days per year, this amounts to the alarming figure of $10,000,000 annually. An investment at 5 per cent to yield this amount would require $200,000,000, which is equivalent to a capital investment of $0.40 per ton of coal, produced annually, on the basis of 500 million tons. These figures apply only to fatalities for which a fixed or stated amount is paid for compensation and do not include the compensation and hospitalization paid for the approximately 103,000 upon whom idleness is enforced by a lost-time disability injury. In one State having an annual production equal to approximately 30 per cent of the total bituminous production of the United States, the most recent data shows that for each fatality there are eight serious injuries causing 60 days or more lost time. The frequency rate of accidents for that State is less than the average for the United States, and so a conservative comparison may be made by using the figures of that State in estimating the total serious injuries, which gives 16,000 as losing 60 days or more. The average number of underground employees in the coal mines of the United States for the past 10 years has been approximately 570,000; the annual underground fatalities amount to approximately 2,000 and non-fatalities to 108,000, or a total of 110,000, which means that one out of every 5.17 employees ,or 19.3 per cent, receives an injury which results in either a fatality or a lost-time disability; this figure in a little over five years will reach a number equivalent to 100 per cent of all underground workmen. Against this is the record of many miners who have worked 25 years or more without a lost—time disability injury, indicating that coal mining is not necessarily productive of injury or death to workers.In the matter of falls of roof, it is found that 85 to 87 per cent of all fatalities occur at the working face, face of a room or entry, or in pillar work. It is at the working face that the greatest roof hazards are encountered, and when about 75 per cent of the underground employees spend approximately 90 per cent of their working hours at the face, it is logical that there is where injury is most likely to occur.Although the roof hazards may vary in different beds of coal, experience has proved that roof hazards can be successfully controlled in all coal mines, essentially regardless of the character of the roof if constant care and attention are given by the management and employees in applying the principle of safety. In almost every mining district some companies maintain an extremely low frequency rate of injury, whereas in the same district with essentially the same roof conditions the opposite is true.A study has recently been made of a number of reports upon fatalities in one district of one of the principal coal—producing States and it showed that 50 lives had been lost at 23 mines as the result of falls of roof or sides. These reports were made by the mine officials, safety engineers, and safety committees and an attempt was made to give both the cause and the person or factor responsible for the fatality. This report (Software Safety 2.2) is the third in a nine-part series of recommendations addressing the functional safety of processor-controlled mining equipment. It is part of a risk-based system safety process encompassing hardware, software, humans, and the operating environment for the equipment’s life cycle. Figure 1 shows a safety framework containing these recommendations. The reports in this series address the various life cycle stages of inception, design, approval and certification, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning. These recommendations were developed as a joint project between the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Mine Safety and Health Administration. They are intended or use by mining companies, original equipment manufacturers, and aftermarket suppliers to these mining companies. Users of these reports are expected to consider the set in total during the design cycle. • 1.0 Safety Introduction.—This is an introductory report for the general mining industry. It provides basic system/software safety concepts, discusses the need for mining to address the functional safety of programmable electronics (PE), and includes the benefits of implementing a system/software safety program. • 2.1 System Safety and 2.2 Software Safety.—These reports draw heavily from International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard IEC 61508 [IEC 1998a,b,c,d,e,f,g] and other standards. The scope is “surface and underground safety-related mining systems employing embedded, networked, and non networked programmable electronics.” System safety seeks to design safety into all phases of the entire system. Software is a subsystem; thus, software safety is a part of the system’s safety .• 3.0 Safety File.—This report contains the documentation that demonstrates the level of safety built into the system and identifies limitations for the system’s use and operation. In essence, it is a “proof of safety” that the system and its operation meets the appropriate level of safety for the intended application. It starts from the beginning of the design, is maintained during the full lifecycle of the system, and provides administrative support for the safety program of the full system. • 4.0 Safety Assessment.—The independent assessment of the Safety File is addressed. It establishes consistent methods to determine the completeness and suitability of safety evidence and justifications. This assessment could be conducted by an independent third party. • 5.0 Safety Framework Guidance.—It is intended to supplement the safety framework reports with guidance providing users with additional information. The purpose is to assist users in applying the concepts presented. In other words, the safety framework is what needs to be don and the guidance is the how it can be done. The guidance information reinforces the concepts, describes various methodologies that can be used, and gives examples and references. It also gives information on the benefits and drawbacks of various methodologies. The guidance reports are not intended to promote a single methodology or to be an exhaustive treaty of the subject material. They provide information and references so that the user can more intelligently choose and implement the appropriate methodologies given the user’s application and capabilities. [ ]

THIS CHAPTER concerns such minor nonmetals as greensand, meerschaum, mineral wool, staurolite, and wollastonite. GREENSAND Output of greensand (glauconite) was slightly higher than in 1958. Open pits of The Kaylorite Corp. (Calvert County, Md.), National Soil Conservation, Inc. (Burlington County, N.J.), and Inversand Co." (Gloucester County, N.J.) accounted for the entire production. Soil conditioning used about 72 percent of the greensand sold. The remainder was used as a water-softening agent. Prices for greensand, f.o.b. mine, ranged from $13 to $70 per short ton.

Educating the public about the role of mining and minerals can be a challenge. While it sometimes seems that little is being done to counteract negative publicity, there are many exciting things happening across the country that are helping meet this challenge. This paper will discuss existing minerals education activities and will provide tips for developing successful programs for a variety of groups, from students to industry to minerals educators themselves. The paper will also include an overview of the 9th annual National Minerals Education Conference held in July 2000 in Spokane, WA.

Alternatives were developed to the conventional ammoniacal carbonate leaching-steam stripping procedure for recovering copper as an oxide from contaminated scrap metal. By entraining air bubbles in the leach solution, the copper dissolution rate was increased to 1.5 g/in2 of copper surface per hour, compared to 0.5 g/in2/hr produced by conventional agitation in stirred tanks. Using entrained nitrogen gas bubbles for agitation in conjunction with powdered sulfur not only resulted in rapid dissolution but also simultaneous precipitation of the copper from solution as a high-grade cuprous sulfide.

This paper presents plant design and cost estimates for limestone treatment of acid mine water covering a wide range of quality and quantity conditions. The treatment process consists of limestone neutralization, aeration, solids settling, and concentration. The design criteria for the various operation functions are based on pilot plant performance, laboratory data, and established mine water treatment standards. Unit costs have been assumed and are related to general market prices and conditions. These estimates serve as preliminary indicators of what it would cost to construct and operate a mine water treatment plant.

Monitoring the miner respirable quartz dust exposure for compliance with U.S. federal regulations is mandatory to protect the health of coal miners. However, there is no technique available for the direct measurement of the respirable quartz dust concentration in the mining environment. The only means to estimate the respirable quartz dust concentration is to perform an analysis of the respirable dust sample collected, which contains both coal and quartz dust as well as other mineral constituents. For samples collected at coal mines, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) utilizes the P7 method for respirable quartz analysis. The objectives of this work are to 1) evaluate the performance of the P7 method on field samples of low quartz mass loadings, 2) evaluate the magnitude of dust mass spatial variability within an enclosed cab environment, and 3) estimate the subsequent propagation of error in calculating the per. centage of quartz over a broad range of mass and quartz filter loadings at a surface coal mine. These objectives were achieved by obtaining surface coal mine dust samples over a 9-month time period in enclosed cabs of three drills and three bulldozers. By measuring weighing precision and using reasonable estimates for sampler variability, the dust mass spatial variability component was calculated by difference. The results show that 1) the P7 method can be precise and linear with quartz mass loadings as low as approximately 5 µmg of quartz, 2) the dust mass spatial variability, even within an enclosed cab environment, is the dominant factor of variability in propagation of error in estimating the quartz content of the obtained dust samples on a percentage basis, and 3) weighing precision is not a significant factor in error propagation. In addition to the enclosed cab samples, samples from eight surface coal mine drills were collected at various locations exterior to the drill cab. Significant data scatter at these outside locations strongly suggests that the ambient dust mass spatial variability has a significant effect on the propagation of error in estimating quartz content of the dust samples on a percentage basis.

"A knowledge of the carbon dioxide (002) content of the products of combustion, particularly from the boiler furnace, is very valuable. An instantaneous indication of the CO2 can be used as a useful guide to efficient burning. A permanent record over a. period of time gives a story to the management which tends to keep the operators more alert. Many instruments that indicate and record CO2 have appeared within the last fifteen years. More are about to appear. Although simple principles involving chemical, physical, or electrical qualities, are being used, there is at present a general feeling of uncertainty about such instruments in the boiler room any instruments are bought, run awhile, then lie idle indefinitely.Inquiries as to CO2 machines continually come to the Bureau of Mines from the general public, as well as from other branches of the Government. Some ten years ago a series of tests was made on certain instruments at that time on the market. The following test was made quite recently on four of the newer types, including one using an electrical principle. The four instruments were installed on one boiler each, according to the instructions of the makers, and the recommended routine attention was given them. The test was of a service nature duplicating the conditions under which the instruments ordinarily serve. The boiler that was available for this purpose was practically banked for some hours of the night. This caused the average CO2 for the entire twenty-four hours to be rather low, although it reached the higher ranges of the instruments during the day.Each day the charts were averaged and the results plotted to form the accompanying curve. The record of each instrument is shown by its particular mark, the dot, circle, cross and square being used in addition there is plotted for each day a rectangular area representing 1 % CO2 in height. The proper positions of this area was determined by means of the Crsat. Where the plotted point for an instrument falls within the rectangel its accuracy is within 1/2% CO2, which is considered satisfactory. Where it falls outside the rectangle, inaccuracy is indicated."

"A recent critical study by Ralston3 of the iron system points out the importance of and necessity for work upon the preparation of ferrous oxide. Not only are ferrous oxide samples desired for determination of the important physical and chemical properties, such as specific heats and heats of formation, bat also information on the stability and behavior of this material is of considerable technical importance. Related. problems where the properties of Fe0 are important have to do with desulphurization of iron, the formation and occurrence of magnetite in copper smelter slags, and sulphur elimination in copperFerrous oxide also has valuable catalytic properties, as is demonstrated in nitrogen fixation.Pure ferrous oxide has never been prepared in quantities large enough to furnish adequate physical and chemical data on its properties. Only two or three experiments4 have produced a fraction of a gram in a state approximating purity and have collected evidence that has been sufficient proof of their having done so. Ferrous oxide is stable only above about 570°C., and below that splits into magnetite and iron according to the reactionUp to about 1920, those who had endeavored to prepare FeO made no provision for rapid chilling, so that although their product. may have had the proper iron oxygen ratio for FeO, in reality it-probably did not consist of pure FeO. The above reaction is reversible; above 570oC. magnetite and iron are supposed to recombine almost completely, and if so, should constitute a direct and easy method of preparation. The data, however, were somewhat conflicting, and the extent to which the reaction goes in either direction needed checking. Preliminary experiments on the interaction of molten Fe304 with solid Fe gave Fe0 of about 85 per cent purity, corresponding to. the approximate purity obtained by some previous investigators. The present work is concerned chiefly with the results cf repeated interaction between partly reduced magnetite and iron, and the calculations which may be made from such results. Repeated treatments are necessary, because molten impure ferrous oxide and iron can not be kept in contact for more than short periods of time."

Ingots of zirconium and other highly reactive metals such as titanium and hafnium produced by the consumable-electrode arc-melting process require conditioning before forging or rolling. A nondestructive, arc-conditioning technique has been developed as a substitute for lathe conditioning. The technique employs en electric arc under an inert atmosphere to fuse surface metal on the sidewalls of ingots without seriously affecting the general quality of the ingots. Advantages of the practice are Increased yields, lower accumulation of inferior scrap, and actual cost savings. The work cited in this report was done on zirconium. INTRODUCTION The consumable-electrode arc-melting process as practiced at the Bureau of Mines3 4/ has proved to be a technique for producing sound, homogeneous, commercial-size ingots of zirconium and its alloys. Ingots produced by this process, however, have as a characteristic a layer of partly fused metal on the sidewall to a depth of 3/16 to 3/8 inch. To prevent extension of surface imperfections during forging, the ingots are ordinarily conditioned by removing defective material in a lathe. If the metal were less reactive or the requirements less severe, the machine chips could be recycled and remelted. However, zirconium, being so oxygen sensitive, is contaminated by merely being machined despite extensive cooling of the tool bit. Further, being contaminated with oxygen, the chip metal upon remelting is 10 to 25 Brinell-hardnese numbers harder than the ingot from which it was machined. For this reason, the ingot specifications for naval reactor use have prohibited remelting machine chips, except as required for starting pads. Again, were zirconium less costly or less in demand this ever-increasing pile could be burned to oxide and recycled through the Kroll sponge process. Economics do not favor this, as melting feed stock has an estimated increase In value over oxide of about $8.80 per pound of contained zirconium. The efforts of the Bureau to solve the problem have been directed along two lines: To reduce the contamination of the machine chips produced and to reduce the quantity of the chips produced. This paper presents the technique developed to reduce the quantity of chips produced by arc-conditioning the remelted ingot.

Vibration measurements at the workplace are often complicated and expensive. The assessment of the risk in conformity with EC Directive 2002/44/EC “Vibration” (which lays down the minimum requirements of laws in Europe for occupational safety and health) can therefore be carried out on the basis of an estimate based on information from manufacturers as well as by measurement conforming to ISO 5349. The characteristic values (emission values) determined by manufacturers in laboratory conditions may deviate from the exposure values measured at source at the workplace. Equally, deviations may arise as a result of the delay in the changeover of test methods from the single axis of measurement to the total vibration value for the three axes of measurement conforming to ISO 20643. To prevent faulty estimates, the manufacturer’s information has to be corrected by a tool-related factor in accordance with CEN/TR 15350. By taking the example of masonry and stone working machines, the empirically determined tool-related correction factor is checked and confirmed. Methods Vibration measurements were carried out in accordance with ISO 5349 in practical application conditions on 10 selected typical eccentric and orbital sanders, concrete and disc grinders as well as on wall chasers and stone saws. Results The total vibration value obtained for the investigated tools rangedfrom ahv = 3.6 m/s² to ahv = 11.6 m/s². When the values from the practical measurements are compared with the manufacturer’s vibration values, the underestimation of the risk occurring in some cases can be largely compensated for by the tool-related factors conforming to CEN/TR 15350 (see Figure 1).

"Three types of respiratory apparatus namely, gas masks, hose masks, and self-contained oxygen-breathing apparatus - are now commonly used for protection from noxious gases, vapors, and smokes or ristes, but no particular type can be selected as best for all conditions. Many factors must be considered in connection with each situation, so that each must be considered as a problem in itself. Following are concise statements for comparing the types:Gas masks are the simplest and easiest to wear, also the least cumber-sore; but they protect only in comparatively low concentrations of noxious gases and should never be used where the air contains less than 16 per cent of oxygen. Special masks give protection from one gas or class of gases, but may give no protection against another gas or class of gases.Hose masks protect in any irrespirable atmosphere, but are somewhat cumbersome, the length of hose limiting the distance a wearer may go from fresh air. They are serviceable also where a supply of pure air moves with the wearer, as where a locomotive engineer in a smoky tunnel is using a hose mask supplied with air from the compressed air line of the locomotive. Hose masks consume no chemicals or materials and so are not limited in the time they may be used.Self-contained oxygen-breathing apparatus protect in any irrespirable atmosphere, but their weight is cumbersome, they can be used only by trained men, and frequent attention must be given them to maintain good working condition. On the other band they are the only safe means for exploring mines and other places filled with irrespirable gases in high concentrations."

The Bureau of Mines determined the kinetics of the reaction of titanium-iron alloys with titanium trichloride dissolved in sodium chloride to provide a basis for understanding the reactions occurring in metallurgical processes involving reduction of the metal halides or alloy refining in fused salts. The rate of the heterogeneous reaction was determined between titanium-iron alloys and titanium trichloride to elucidate the effects of alloy composition on the rate. Measurements were made in an inert atmosphere with a high-temperature thermobalance using high-purity reactants. The rates of the reactions were about 1 x 10-5 g Ti/cm2-sec, and the reaction was phase-boundary controlled. Titanium alloys of the body-centered cubic beta structure reacted faster than those with the hexagonal close-packed alpha structure. The inter-metallic compound, TiFe, reacted very slowly, whereas TiFe2 was inert. Alloys containing above 89 atomic percent iron gained weight by reacting with titanium species in the salt solution and depositing titanium in the alloy. The effect of TiCl3 concentration on the reaction rate was determined from 2 to 12 weight-percent TiC13 and at various alloy compositions. At high iron contents, above 50 atomic percent, the TiC13 concentration effect was small. At lower iron contents, the TiC13 concentration effect was greater for beta-crystalline alloys than for alpha-crystalline alloys. The temperature dependence of the reaction between titanium alloy containing 8.7 atomic percent iron and titanium trichloride was measured over the temperature range 1,062° to 1,220° K, and the energy of activation was 7.7 kilocalories for the reaction.

A computer model of an existing mine ventilation system can be executed using data developed from ventilation survey results. This model can then be used to analyze and evaluate proposed modifications to the system. The acquisition of field measurements during a ventilation survey and the corresponding development of this information into computer input data have been discussed in detail in the preceding chapters. In this chapter, the data are used in computer-oriented analysis of the mine ventilation system. The PSU/MVS was selected for use because of its advanced capabilities. MINE DESCRIPTION The mine chosen for this application is located in Western Pennsylvania. The Pittsburgh coal seam, having an average height of 5-1/4 to 6-1/2 ft, is mined under approximately 300 to 500 ft of cover. The mine preparation plant and shipping facilities are located at the seam outcrop along a river; mining has progressed from the outcrop to an area about 10 miles from the pit mouth so that there are extensive worked-out areas through which access is maintained to the current mining area. Coal haulage is by conveyor to an underground transfer point, located four miles from the pit mouth, and then by high speed rail haulage to the preparation plant. The rail haulage link is scheduled for replacement by a conveyor in the near future. Mining at the present time is limited to the room and pillar method using continuous miners. Longwall mining had been attempted in the past with only limited success; as a result, several panels originally laid out for longwall mining are currently being extracted by room and pillar work. "Welfare endeavor in connection with both the metal and the coal mines of Utah has shown gratifying progress during recent years, and in most mining towns of the state, both the operators and their employees deserve much credit for the efforts put forth to better the living, working, educational and recreational conditions. Progress has been and is being made, but there are still a few important towns where purer water and better sewage disposal are pressing needs.In the older metal-mining towns that are incorporated and are independent of the mining properties operating in the vicinity, less opportunity is presented for the companies to exercise efforts looking toward improved welfare conditions than in company towns controlled by the mine operators.However, even in such towns the companies can do much to better welfare conditions, as shown by the progress in Bingham Canyon during the past several years. The Utah Copper Company has spent $800,000 since 1920, in the erection of modern brick cottages, apartment houses and the Germnell Memorial Club. The cottages and apartment houses have every convenience to be found in up-to-date city homes. The Gemmell Memorial Club erected and equipped at a cost of $175,000 was provided by the company for the benefit of the Utah Copper employees living in the canyon and has been made the recreational center for the camp. Another improvement is the $100,000 fireproof hotel built by the United States Mine of the United States Mining, Smelting and Refining; Co. in the Copperfield section of Bingham Canyon. This hotel will accommodate 105 men exclusive of hotel help and has all the conveniences of a city hotel."

This report describes work done as part of a Bureau of Mines program to appraise the titanium-mineral resources of Idaho. The work included both field reconnaissance and a spot churn-drilling program. Much general information was available, as a result of earlier work done under the Western Radioactive Minerals Exploration Program conducted between 1950 and 1954 by the Bureau of Mines for the United States Atomic Energy Commission. This particular exploration provided data as to the quantity of ilmenite (TiFe03) and accessory black-sand mineral concentrates in a number of placer deposits; however, at that time no tests were made to ascertain if the ilmenite was of marketable grade. The spot churn drilling was begun in the Gold Fork area of Long Valley, Valley County, Idaho (fig. 1), in August 1956 and was completed during October of the same year. Eleven holes (designated as the GF series on fig. 2) 35 to 45 feet in depth, aggregating 425 feet, were completed during this period. Data from other exploration drilling in 1951 was used in this report. The 13 holes in the G series shown in figure 2 were drilled by the Bureau of Mines for the United States Atomic Energy Commission; the 7 holes of the DH series were drilled by the Bureau of Reclamation. The 20 holes, ranging from 16 to 140 feet in depth, totaled 1,625 feet. The combined number of all samples recovered was 422. Those taken in 1956 were composited for each drill hole and sent to the Bureau of Mines laboratory in Albany, Oreg., for analyses.

In 1992, the Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral resource investigation of the 19,200-hectare Garfield Mountain study area in east central Idaho. The area had been proposed for Wilderness. Cretaceous-age quartzite and limestone conglomerates underlie the area's east half; thick travertine beds, as well as limestones, dolomites, sandstones, and volcanic tuffs occupy the west half. All the rocks have been faulted and folded as part of the Western Overthrust Belt. Two, enormous travertine deposits occur in the west end of the study area. The lower deposit, controlled by Faxe Kalk Inc., has at least 200 million m3 (cubic meters) of travertine resources. Most of their deposit is very bright with a high CaC03 content and a low insoluble residual percentage: thus it is suitable for use as a paper and paint filler. The upper deposit, owned by Idaho Travertine Corp., contains 100 million m3 of travertine resources; it is used for facing or dimension stone. Weathered travertine outcrops are buff to tan and locally vuggy. Bureau of Mines samples of' outcrops contained greater than 95% CaC03. Approximately 600 m3 of travertine have been quarried from the two deposits and used for facing stone. Four travertine quarries and two dozer cuts were examined. Faxe Kalk has 103 White Rock placer claims on the lower deposit; approximately one-half of the claims are within the study area. Idaho Travertine has the Limestone 1 and 2 placer claims on the upper deposit. A 4,647-m-deep oil and gas exploratory well was drilled on the east end of the study area without success.

THE STATISTICAL tables in this chapter present, country by country, the mineral production of the world in 1949-50. The figures are on a mine basis, unless otherwise indicated, except for cement, coke, and steel, which are measured at the processing plant. The tables are essentially a retabulation, by countries, of the 53 commodity world tables appearing in the various chapters of this volume. For lack of comprehensive information, data for the following minerals are excluded: Andalusite, aplite, asphalt, boron, bromine, calcite (optical), calcium chloride (natural), carbon dioxide, clay, columbium (niobium), diatomite (kieselguhr), dumortierite, emery, garnet (abrasive), gem stones (other than diamonds), germanium, greensand, grindstones, helium, indium, iodine, kyanite, lithium, magnesium compounds (other than magnesite), meerschaum, mineral pigments, monazite, natural gas, natural gasoline, oil shale, olivine, perlite, pumice, quartz crystal, radium, sand and gravel, selenium, sillimanite, sodium salts (other than common salt), stone, strontium, sulfur (byproduct), tantalum, tellurium, thallium, topaz (industrial), tripoli) uranium, vermiculite, wollastonite, and zirconium. In addition, a few minor geographic areas for which no statistics are available, are also omitted from the tabulation; it is believed that no significant quantities of minerals are mined in any of these areas. The statistics in these tables were derived principally from questionnaires sent, in cooperation with the United States Department of State, to the governments of each country. Supplementary sources were United States consular reports, the Imperial Institute's Statistical Summary of the Mineral Industry of the British Commonwealth and Foreign Countries, other official publications of various countries, the United Nations Statistical Yearbook, the Year Book of the American Bureau of Metal Statistics, Minerais et Metaux, business magazines, and company reports.
