Under contract with the Federal Bureau of Mines, Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., performed a statistical study to find less expensive and time-consuming methods of monitoring the noncombustible content of coal mine dust. Calculations based on thermodynamic considerations verified the reasonableness of Federal rock-dusting requirements. The results of extensive sampling in southwestern Pennsylvania mines indicated that, at the 95-percent confidence level, the present system of sampling at 200-foot intervals may be replaced by sampling at 500-foot intervals, and that a 1-inch scoop floor sampler may replace the standard 6-inch scoop for floor sampling. Further field testing is recommended.

The Greenburg-Smith impinger was developed at the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the United States Public Health Service in 1922 in the course of an investigation of dust-sampling instruments available at that time. Although it is not used extensively outside of the United States, it is now soused in this country to collect samples for the determination of any dustiness, and most of the information correlating degree of dustiness with physiological effect has been obtained by the impinger method. The chief disadvantages in the use of the regular impinger, especially in mines and other places accessible with difficulty, are its bulk, weight, and power requirements. It requires a source either of electricity or of compressed air, which necessitates connections and extension of existing supply lines to each sampling point; the only alternative is the use of a relatively large pump hand-operated with considerable effort.

The Bureau of Mines has carried out investigations on a method for producing zirconyl sulfate solution from zircon sand, comprising (1) reacting zircon sand with molten NaOH, (2) leaching the resultant fusion frit with water to remove sodium silicate and to convert sodium zircon-ate to hydrous zirconium oxide, and (3) leaching the hydrous zirconium oxide from unreacted sand with hot, dilute H2S04 to produce crude zirconyl sulfate solution. The following conditions were found to be suitable: reacting 0.6 kg of NaOH per kilogram of zircon sand for 10 min at 600° C; leaching the frit with 3 to 4 liters of water per kilogram of solids; leaching the residue with 5.1 liters of water and 1.25 liters of 98-pct H2S04 per kilogram of original solids for 10 min at 90° C; and filtering or decanting to recover unreacted zircon sand. A preliminary cost estimate is included.

As part of a continuing effort to maximize metal recovery from domestic secondary resources, the Bureau of Mines investigated a process for recovering the metallic portion of scrap alkaline batteries. A pyrometallurgical method for recovering nickel and cadmium from Ni-Cd scrap batteries previously developed on a laboratory scale, was scaled up to 25-and 43-pound charges. The method employed reduction and/or decomposition in a retort using a minimum of 2.5 percent carbon as a reductant. Metallic cadmium was distilled at atmospheric pressure and a minimum of 900° C. Purity of the recovered cadmium was 99.8 percent minimum and the nickel-iron residue contained less than 0.02 percent cadmium.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated the hydraulic stimulation of a gob-degasification borehole to determine if this procedure would aid in degasifying a longwall panel. The stimulated borehole did not degasify the longwall panel as expected either before or after mining of the panel started. It reduced the underground methane emission only 11 pct, considerably less than the reductions effected by two unstimulated boreholes in the same panel. Some probable reasons for the reduced methane flow from the hydraulically stimulated borehole are very low reservoir gas pressure, location of hydraulically stimulated zones within the grouted casing, a casing break caused by lateral shifting, possible vertical movement of rock strata during caving, grouting of a 4-inch pipe blocking three stimulated zones, plasticity of shales, and possible hole damage by swelling of water-sensitive minerals. The borehole was also located between two second-mined areas, which may have allowed partial degasification of the overburden and the coalbed in advance of mining. Finally, a period of 3 months is probably not long enough for the borehole to degasify the overburden before mining.

This Bureau of Mines publication describes a practical approach to sampling that does not require elaborate statistical techniques. Simple steps are given for finding a cutoff point in the response from a repetitive survey. This procedure can be used to estimate the aggregate value of the characteristic being measured without waiting for a complete count from the survey. This is a useful technique when the reference periods are repeated at frequent intervals, such as monthly and quarterly, and when the statistical collecting agency is engaged in publishing timely data which must be accurate economic indicators.

Diamond-bit performance and cost data accumulated by the Bureau of Mines in core-drilling schists reveal significant trends of economic interest. Low-quality, small-size drill bort were the most economical. The percentage of core recovery, type and size of bit, and bit matrix are also correlated with bit performance and costs. Detailed analyses of the factors affecting diamond-bit performances and costs are assessed in the tables, graphs, and discussion.

Magnesium oxysulfate cement has been specially formulated as a sealant in underground coal mines for reducing sloughing of shale roofs and coal ribs, for reducing air losses through block stoppings, for constructing sprayed stop-pings over approved jute cloth or metal lath, and for reducing combustibility of polyurethane foam. A standard spray machine (Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) approved) was used for the underground testing. Our research shows that a 1/2-inch coating reduces shale and coal sloughing, reduces air losses through block stoppings, and prevents fire propagation through a metal tunnel lined with polyurethane foam. During the underground tests, excess mixing water was used to improve pumping the slurry to the spray nozzle. This was later found to increase shrinkage cracks in the cured coatings. Controlling excess water is important to an acceptable coating.

The various applications of beryllium and its compounds in atomic - energy technology and a growing recognition of possible increased utilization of the metal in the aircraft and space - missile fields have resulted in increased interest in domestic and world reserves of beryllium . Unfortunately, little dependable data on beryllium resources and reserves are available , as past consumption of the element has been small and only limited prospecting and exploration work has been done . The scarcity of resource information is attributed partly to the difficulty of recognizing beryllium minerals in the field . These minerals frequently do not have distinctive characteristics of specific gravity, color , or other physical properties , that enable ready identification by the average prospector . This is particularly true of fine - grained minerals . As a result , a simple field test for identifying beryllium- bearing rock is needed . Recognizing this , technologists of the Federal Bureau of Mines investigated several of the proposed qualitative chemical tests for beryllium . This report describes various modifications of one of these methods to make it more suitable for use in the field . In the modified method , duplicate samples are fluxed -- one with potassium bifluoride and one with potassium bisulfate -- followed by dissolution of salts in water , conversion of the solution to an alkaline condition, addition of morin , and examination of the solution for fluorescence under short -wave ultraviolet light . This method provides a fast , dependable field test for beryllium minerals containing as little as 0.2 percent beryl or its equivalent . The test involves no radiation hazards , and it can be performed by persons having no technical training ; therefore , it should be useful to prospectors in discovering beryllium mineralization .

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report provides a detailed description of the Bureau-designed modified shearer clearer system. Engineering drawings are provided for all major components of this system. The modified shearer clearer system is a revised version of the original system and is intended to improve the ventilation around both cutting drums. The original shearer clearer technique was solely a dust control technique that has been effective in lowering shearer operators' dust exposures. The technique uses a series of water sprays that not only knock down a portion of the dust cloud but also act as small fans that move a substantial amount of air and keep the dust cloud from dispersing over the shearer body. The modified version is composed of two additional spray blocks for improved air movement around both cutting drums, thus lowering methane levels and the likelihood of an ignition. A laboratory study performed with the modified version in a full-scale longwall gallery resulted in a 73-pet reduction in methane concentrations at the shearer machine for both cut directions. The air-moving capabilities of the system provide more turbulence at the cutting drums and reduce methane levels.

One means of doing this would be to make a plastic mixture of the ground ore and extrude as pellets or large slugs or brick shapes.If a pelletizing Process is employed, the pellets must be strong enough to resist breaking when rolled and tumbled in going through the rotary kiln. If a brick-making process is employed, the brick must be strong enough to withstand handling and considerable pressure when stacked in the kilns.The study had two objectives: first, to find a binder of sufficient strength throughout the early stages of curing and heat treating and, second, to determine the degree of curing and heat treatment necessary to prevent disintegration under normal working conditions.Although the investigation had as its primary objective the processing of sponge iron, the data should interest other industries in which non plastic or poor-bonding slimes are a problem."

Fertilizers are indispensable to national preparedness and defense. Production of adequate supplies of nourishing food for sustaining life in the United States is absolutely dependent in many parts of the country on the use of artificial fertilizers of various types. Only by using fertilizers can we maintain our present volume of production without great additional expense. Otherwise we would have to increase crop areas constantly to compensate for declining yields, we would have to lower the quality of food marketed, and standards of farm living and rural civilization would decline. About 60 million of the 360 million acres of crops grown annually in the United States Vow require fertilizing each year, and between 7 and 9 million tons of commercial fertilizers are consumed annually for this purpose.

PURPOSE This report provides an integrative review of 52 recently published research reports that examine the associations between long working hours and illnesses, injuries, health behaviors, and performance. The report is restricted to a description of the findings and methods and is not intended as an exhaustive discussion of all important issues related to long working hours. Findings and methods are summarized as reported by the original authors, and the study methods are not critically evaluated for quality. SUMMARY In 16 of 22 studies addressing general health effects, overtime was associated with poorer perceived general health, increased injury rates, more illnesses, or increased mortality. One meta-analysis of long work hours suggested a possible weak relationship with preterm birth. Overtime was associated with unhealthy weight gain in two studies, increased alcohol use in two of three studies, increased smoking in one of two studies, and poorer neuropsychological test performance in one study. Some reports did not support this trend, finding no relationship between long work hours and leisure-time physical activity (two of three studies) and no relationship with drug abuse (one study). A pattern of deteriorating performance on psycho physiological tests as well as injuries while working long hours was observed across study findings, particularly with very long shifts and when 12-hour shifts combined with more than 40 hours of work a week. Four studies that focused on effects during extended shifts reported that the9thto 12th hours of work were associated with feelings of decreased alertness and increased fatigue, lower cognitive function, declines in vigilance on task measures, and increased injuries. Two studies examining physicians who worked very long shifts reported deterioration on various measures of cognitive performance. When 12-hour shifts combined with other work-related demands, a pattern of more adverse findings was detected across studies. Six studies examining 12-hour shifts combined with more than 40 hours of work per week reported increases in health complaints, deterioration in performance, or slower pace of work. Two studies com-paring 8- and 12-hour schedules during day and night shifts reported that 12-hour night shifts were associated with more physical fatigue, smoking, or alcohol use. Two studies examining start times for 12-hour shifts reported that decrements in alertness or more health complaints were associated with early 6:00 a.m. start times. One study examining 12-hour shifts in hot work environments reported a slower pace of work as compared with shorter shifts. Another study examining high workloads during 12-hour shifts showed increased discomfort and deterioration in performance as compared with shorter shifts. More definitive statements about differences between 8-hour and 12-hour shifts are difficult because of the inconsistencies in the types of work schedules examined across studies. Work schedules differed by the time of day (i.e., day, evening, night), fixed versus rotating schedules, speed of rotation, direction of rotation, number of hours worked per week, number of consecutive days worked, number of rest days, and number of weekends off. All of these factors could have interacted with overtime and influenced study results. Timber decay is due largely if not wholly to a fungus growth on the timber from which it derives' food; a warm, moist atmosphere is necessary for rapid growth. The decay is spread from infected timber to sound timber by countless microscopic spores or seeds given off by the fungus growth and carried by air currents or by long, cottonlike threads, which spread from timber to timber. Haulage roads in most mines in the central coal fields are also return aircourses; hence moisture and temperature conditions are ideal for the rapid decay of mine ties and mine timber. Possibly the return air, which contains a higher percentage of carbon dioxide than normal outside air, also stimulates the growth of fungi. Those familiar with coal mining have observed the more pronounced growth of fungi and decay of timber in poorly ventilated worked-out sections of mines where the air is moist and where usually the percentage of carbon dioxide in the air is considerably above normal.

Mathematical modeling is a scientific exercise with the objective of developing simplified mathematical statements that relate to one another the same way as the processes that are being modeled. The utility value of the model is dependent on the ability of the model to closely approximate prototype behavior. Development of a perfect model, therefore, is an unrealistic objective because of the simpli¬fying assumptions made in building it. However, for a model to be acceptable for application, its operating characteristics or data generated from it should, within reasonable accuracy, duplicate proto¬performance. The validity and accuracy of a model depends on the mathematical constraints presupposed in model formulation. The final model must be tested for mathematical validity and for closeness of representation of the prototype. Mathematical validity, does not, however, imply that the model is accurate and correct but is prerequisite. Model testing and verification for the steady state model are given in Owili-Eger et al (1973). The unsteady state model has been tested for mathematical validity and found to be correct but has not yet been applied to a field condition for lack of data. However, in the application discussed below, the unsteady state model results are compared with pressure curves reported in literature and also with results from the steady state model. Coal seam characteristics and gas reservoir pressure used in this application are extracted from Kissell (1972). These characteristics are for the Pittsburgh seam, Federal No. 2 Mine, Fairview, West Virginia.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted desorption work on fine coal particles at near atmospheric pressure. An apparatus Iris been developed that uses a capacitance manometer to measure desorption of methane from coal particles up to, 2 inches in diameter and pressures up to 1,000 psi. This will make it possible to duplicate the desorption process as it occurs in its natural underground environment.

This report on properties of commercial motor fuels is the twelfth in a series made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first report contained data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.V The -present report, covering the summer of 1941, presents analytical data for 1,857 samples, representing the products of approximately 135 companies. As in previous surveys, these companies include both large and small suppliers. In addition, the Pacific coast is represented by data averaged by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted, and these data are published exactly as they were received. Conforming to previous surveys, the data cover three groups of samples -- regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines -- and each group has been aver aged separately. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group, exclusive of those of the Pacific coast, are as follows: Regular price, 1,010 samples, 291 items, and 86 brands; premium price, 577 samples, 263 items, and 78 brands; third-grade gasoline, 270 samples 159 items, and 74 brands. The meanings of these terms as used in the surveys are as follows: Sample: The individual supply of gasoline obtained at the filling station and analyzed in the laboratory.

Estimate costs for projected uranium in-situ mining operations. Approach Develop a computer model and an associated data base which will allow users to supply data applicable to a specific mining site in order to estimate total capital and operating costs for a potential in-situ mining operation at the site. How the Model Works The model requires a minimal amount of input from the user. The data input must be known or estimated information about a potential in-situ mining operation. The user can also supply any additional project specifications. The computer model uses a process-engineering approach and determines through a discounted cash flow analysis the total capital and operating costs for the life of the project. This time-span measures from the start of the pilot-scale operation through to the site's restoration and reclamation. The model will determine the production cost per pound of material mined subject to the rate of return identified by the user. Conversely, it will also solve for the rate of return realized for the specific sales price per pound. [ ] Currently the model's data base can tai ns costs, rates, and specifications for Texas and Wyoming, the only states where commercial uranium in-situ mining is being conducted. However, this model can be used by anyone who is conducting in-situ leaching or who plans to leach uranium in-situ. At least part of any uranium deposit has a potential for in-situ mining.
