The United States is the world's largest consumer of tin and depends entirely upon foreign imports for its major source of supply. Only a small quantity of tin is produced on the North America continent. The advent of the war in Europe in 1939?brought a threat to our foreign sources of supply, and the Congress took steps to forestall shortages of tin and other metals. By authority of the Strategic Minerals Act, passed by Congress in 1939, and subsequent legislation, the Bureau of' Mines ?and Geological Survey conducted investigations of domestic tin deposits. Most of the tin that has been produced in North America came from the Seward Peninsula, Alaska.

[In a certain application it was necessary to compute the incomplete beta function, ß(1/2, p, q), for a certain set of values of p and q. Since the set of p and q values was much more finely spaced than those in any published tables, the authors have decided to make their results available in this report. In connection with this application, the function ß(1/2, p, q) was needed at various points in the p, q plane at intervals of 0.05, 0.05 p = 2q < 10.00. Fletcher, Miller, and Rosenhead3/ state that the only tables available in the desired range are those of Pearson.4/ However, the interval used by Pearson was not small enough for the present application. For this reason, it was decided to calculate the function ß(1/2, p, q) for p = q = 0.05 (0.05) 10.00. This table is published because of the fundamental importance in mathematical analysis of the incomplete beta function.]

Objective To reduce equipment operator exposure to respirable dust in enclosed cabs by examining the effectiveness of retrofitting air pressurization and filtration systems on existing cabs. Background Many types of heavy equipment are used in mining, construction, and agriculture. Most have enclosed cabs to protect the equipment operator from excessive dust and noise exposure. When the equipment is new, controls are normally implemented into the cab to keep these exposures at acceptable levels. However, as this equipment becomes older, many components of the enclosure deteriorate, such as gaskets and seals. This causes the effectiveness of the enclosed cab to be greatly reduced. Once this occurs, the equipment operator&apos;s dust exposure can increase to hazardous levels. In surface mining operations, elevated exposures to crystalline silica have caused an excessive incidence of silicosis. Approach A cooperative research study with a mining operation and a cab filtration company was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of retrofitting an older surface drill with two controls to lower the drill operator&apos;s respirable dust exposure. These two controls were: (1) A good air filtering and pressurization system to ensure that clean air was delivered into the enclosed cab. Ideally, the incoming air filter should be 99% efficient in removing particles with an aero- dynamic diameter of 0.3 pm or greater from the airflow. (2) Sufficiently sealing the cab to develop a positive static pres- sure and ensure that dust was not leaking into the cab. This was done by plugging all holes and cracks and maintaining good gaskets and seals. To prevent wind from forcing contaminated air through holes in the cab, the cab&apos;s static pressure must be greater than the wind&apos;s velocity pressure. During the course of this research, it was found that a floor heater fan used in the drill during the winter months greatly increased the operator’s Respirable dust exposure. Problem Identification Four days of background dust levels were measured as a baseline for this research. These baseline measurements were taken in May 2000 when air temperatures ranged from 60° to 70° F. When this was completed, the two controls were implemented. The first control was to install an improved air filtering and pressurization system on the enclosed cab. This was composed of a two-stage prefilter, a blower, then the respirator-medium secondary filter. Since the secondary filter was on the positive side of the fan, all air delivered into the enclosed cab had to pass through this secondary filter. After the filtering system was installed, the cab was pressurized to a static pressure of0.01 inches of water (w.g.), which is still very minimal. The second control was to seal the cab. New door gaskets were installed, and all cracks and holes in the shell of the enclosure were plugged. This increased the cab pressurization to approximately 0.1 inches w.g.

In its investigation of deposits of strategic minerals, the Bureau of Mines did some development drilling at the New Galena Deposit in an endeavor to find an additional source of supply of lead. In Bucks County, lead and zinc minerals have been found in shales over a largo area west and northwest of Doylestown. Considerable mining has been done in the vicinity of New Galena on the North Branch of Noshaminy Creek, 3 miles northwest of Doylestown. It has not been possible to obtain a satisfactory history of the New Galena mine, as there is much disagreement in statements. Most of the mining was done in open pits. Two shafts were sunk to shallow depth; one of these became part of the main pit&apos; which is 256 foot long, 50 to 75 feet wide, and 20 to 44 feet deep. Small pits 8 to 10 foot square wore sunk on the ore zone, which extends some 1450 feet to the southwest. The rock containing the minerals is either black or gray shale. The gray material closely resembles limestone. The following minerals have been reported from the mine: quartz, ankerite, calcite, galena, sphalerite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and bornite. Some of the galena has yielded 10 to 15 ounces of silver and 10 cents in gold per ton. The average grade of the ore as mined is not known. To investigate the downward extension of the ore shoot, the Bureau drilled two holes aggregating 373.9 feet, No additional ore was developed by this work.

The Bureau of Mines developed a new method for the determination of oxides of nitrogen in diesel exhaust gas. The procedure, a modification of the Saltzman method, uses a NO2 absorbent for the diesel exhaust gas; the colorless absorbent becomes purple on contact with N~. When used properly this procedure gives satisfactory results in 2 hours, whereas the standard phenoldisulfonic acid method required approximately 8 hours. The new method is not satisfactory for determination of oxides of nitrogen in the overrich fuel to air ratio range.

Three species of chemosynthetic iron- and sulfur-oxidizing autotrophic bacteria have been isolated from the leaching waters of copper mining areas. These species are: The sulfur-oxidizing Thiobacillus concretivorus, the iron-oxidizing Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans, and a sulfur- and iron-oxidizing bacterium closely resembling Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, INTRODUCTION Among several suggested new processes for treating marginal ores in the United States, none is more intriguing than the possibility of extracting metals from low-grade materials by the action of microorganisms One phase of a Federal Bureau of Mines investigation toward developing such a procedure was to isolate and identify specific chemosynthetic iron and sulfur. oxidizing autotrophic bacteria native to certain domestic copper deposits where leaching is practiced. The bacteria or microorganisms considered important to this investigation are those capable of producing solutions of ferric sulfate and sulfuric acid. Solutions of this type are excellent solvents for some copper minerals By establishing the presence of these bacteria at certain copper-leaching areas, strength would be given to a theory that microbial activity is partly responsible for the oxidation that takes place at these areas. Their presence also advances possibilities for controlled use of microbial action in metal extraction processes. Leathen4/ has demonstrated that one of the chemosynthetic iron-oxidizing bacteria, Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans, can oxidize 200 parts per million of ferrous iron to the ferric state in 3 days,

"INTRODUCTION The Sullivan Mine was examined by Thomas L. Chapman, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in March 1943. Samples taken from the few mineralized exposures justified further investigation of the property. To determine whether extensive exploration of the property would be warranted, the Bureau did a small amount of trenching and underground work during April 1943, 3/ under Bureau project 1462.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its, primary objective the, more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratary project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurigical Branch, R. G. The results of an experimental investigation into the possible use of medium energy acoustic fields (130 to 140 dB) to precipitate 1 to 10 micron particles is presented. The aerosol was produced with a LeMer generator using oleic acid and nitrogen. The sound field was a sinusoidal standing wave field in an acrylic tube, with light transmission data used for concentration determination. The results showed collection efficiencies of up to 80% on 2 micron particles with a residence time of 11.8 seconds at a sound pressure level of 139 dB re 2x10-5 N/m2. A discussion of the possible turbulent mechanism is made, as well as review and comparison with others? work.

"In response to the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) Request for Proposal (RFP) for "" the establishment of a Generic Mineral Technology Center (GTC) in Respirable Dust,"" the Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institutes (MRIs) at The Pennsylvania State University (PSU) and West Virginia University (WVU) in association with participating MRIs at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and the University of Minnesota (UMN) have prepared the comprehensive research program described herein. Michigan Technological University (MTU) joined the Center as an affiliate after its inception. This program was developed with recognition of the stated objective of the Federal Mine Safety and Health laws which is to "". . . permit each miner the opportunity to work underground during the period of his entire adult working life without incurring any disability from pneumoconiosis or any other occupation-related disease . . . .""Exposure to respirable contaminants in mine atmospheres has long posed a serious hazard to miners. The control of these hazards, some of which can have sudden and catastrophic consequences and some others, slow and long enduring, has been a major concern for labor, management and the government. This concern has manifested itself in four mechanisms of control -- (1) regulatory control through minimum standard setting by the passage of mine health and safety laws, (2) engineering control through design and operation of mines according to the best recommended practices, (3) interaction of dust and lung control through periodic physical examinations, wearing personal protection devices, etc., and (4) legal and social control through workman's compensation laws for occupation related health deterioration."

The present status of the National Bureau of Standards program is that many magnetic tapes of analog data have been recorded in four major mines. Each mine uses different types of equipment. In addition, some surface measurements of noise have been made at two additional mines. Two types of recordings have been made: (1) broadband measurements for spectral plots and (2) narrowband measurements for amplitude probability density (APD) plots. Only data from one mine (Robena #4) has been processed and was, presented at this workshop. The short-term goals are: (1) finish processing data from the other mines, (2) establish or reduce measurement system uncertainties, (3) put Robella report into final form for distribution, and (4) hold a review to determine what has been done, to distribute and to interpret the preliminary data, and to determine what still needs to be done. Long-term goals are: (1) complete final reports on each of the mine trips, (2) establish techniques for predicting noise in mines already visited and establish uncertainty bounds for these predictions, and (3) establish techniques for predicting noise in mines that have not been visited (but that use similar equipment to those visited) and also establish uncertainty bounds for these predictions. Specific factors or formats to be presented include: (A) For underground broadband measurements: 1. 300 Hz to 100 kHz spectral plots 2. 300 Hz to 384 kHz spectral plots 3. 300 Hz to 192 kHz spectral plots 4. 300 Hz to 6kHz (subject to change to 3 or 12 kHz) spectral plots (B) For surface broadband measurements: 1. 300 Hz to 6 kHz (or 12 kHz) spectral plots 2. 300 Hz to 3 kHz spectral plots (C) For underground narrowband measurements : 1. To help mine safety and health professionals manage and reduce hazardous noise exposure with a software tool that simplifies the record-keeping and analysis process. Background Hearing loss resulting from overexposure to noise continues to be a problem throughout the U.S. mining industry. Studies indicate that 70%?90% of all miners have a noise-induced hearing loss severe enough to be classified as a hearing disability by the time they reach retirement age. To address this problem, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed the Determination of Sound Exposures (DOSES) software program. DOSES is designed specifically for use by mine management and safety personnel to simplify the record-keeping and analysis associated with time-motion studies, making it easier to identify and solve noise exposure problems.

The Old Reliable copper mine was first examined by Harlow D. Phelps , an engineer of the Bureau of Mines , in October and November 1942 , in compliance with a request from the War Production Board , which furnished copies of assay maps of the 100- and 200-foot levels and requested that they be check-sampled . The author and R. li. Grantham and W. D. Hughes , engineers of the Bureau , made a second and more detailed examination later , after a number of manways had been opened that were inaccessible when the first examination was made .

This Bureau of Mines study describes two processes for recovering zinc, copper, silver, and iron from the magnetic fraction of a waste generated by the primary smelting of zinc in horizontal retort distillation furnaces. The laboratory-scale procedures include reduction melting to produce a high-copper iron and matte smelting to produce a copper-silver-iron matte and metallic iron. Zinc is fumed in each process and recovered as the oxide. Direct reduction melting yields a metallic iron high in copper and a small rich matte from the sulfur contained in the waste. The products of the second process are a matte containing essentially all of the silver, about 80 pct of the copper and 37 pet of the iron, and an iron-copper alloy containing all of the remaining copper. Extraction with metallic lead or sodium sulfate recovers essentially all of the copper from the molten high-copper iron and yields an acceptable foundry iron.

Objective To characterize the roof fall risk associated with underground limestone mining. Background During the first 5 years of this decade, more than one-fourth of the underground mining fatalities occurred as the result of fall of ground. The large openings in underground stone mines present limitations in observing ground conditions because of floor-to-roof heights ranging from 20 to 60 ft or more. Generally, the status of ground conditions in under-ground stone mines is based on observation and experience obtained during mining development. Some mines use monitoring instruments to gain information on roof conditions, but this practice is typically focused and localized to address issues in a particular area or section of the mine. The Roof Fall Risk Index (RFRI) described here provides a method of systematically characterizing the risk of roof falls to enhance the safety of mine workers. Approach As in many industries, a defective product signals the potential for failure. Similarly, defective rock or strata in an underground stone mine presents a potential risk. Assessing ground conditions relative to the concentration of defects observed provides a way to index or rate these conditions and the subsequent risk. Through observations at approximately 50 underground limestone mines in the United States, strata defects were categorized to develop a quantitative method for determining the RFRI. This method is specifically geared to underground lime-stone mines because strata defects are difficult to see and limited by the experience and knowledge of the observer. Overall, 10 defect categories were deter-mined: 3 that relate to geology, 4 that result from mine development, 2 that are indicative of the roof profile, and 1 that addresses moisture or water flow (see RFRI Chart 1). The defect categories are also weighted to reflect the conditions indicative of roof or strata movement or separation (categories 4 through 8). These weights are multiplied by the assessment value to determine the total category value. The benefit of using monitoring techniques to gain information on roof conditions is also factored into the RFRI for overall assessment of an area in the mine. Each defect category is assessed with a value of 1 to 5 based on parameters as defined in each defect category, with 5 indicating the highest degree or level of defect. The assessment value of 3 is also used when information on a parameter is unknown. The parameters for the defect categories are illustrated in RFRI Chart 2 for use in determining the assessed value. How It Works The RFRI provides a means to categorize the risk for roof falls in underground stone mines. The concept of this calculation is aimed at providing an indication of the level or degree of defect relative to the area of the mine examined. The RFRI for the calculation produces a distribution where RFRI values approaching 0 represent a stable condition and those ap-proaching 100 represent an unstable condition.

To develop a quick, safe, and effective method that allows workers at mineral processing operations to clean their dust-soiled clothing periodically throughout the workday. Background Reducing workers&apos; respirable dust exposure to silica and other harmful dusts and contaminants is an ongoing goal in the U.S. mining industry. One area of known worker exposure is from contaminated work clothes. A U.S. Bureau of Mines report documented a number of cases where a tenfold increase in a worker&apos;s dust exposure was measured from contaminated work clothes. In these cases, the dust emitted from clothing caused the worker&apos;s dust exposure to exceed the permissible exposure limit in less than 2 hours. The most effective way to eliminate this dust source is to have workers clean or change their work clothes. There are two federal regulations that impact the clothes-cleaning process. The first states that at no time shall compressed air be directed toward a person, but that when compressed air is used, then all necessary precautions shall be taken to protect persons from injury. The second regulation states that compressed air should only be used for cleaning purposes when it is less than 30 psi and used along with personal protective equipment. For the mining industry, by default, the only approved method to perform clothes cleaning is to have workers vacuum their clothes using a HEPA filter system. This is very difficult and time-consuming and, in most instances, not very effective. Most workers would prefer to use a single compressed air hose to blow dust from their work clothes. However, not only is this method prohibited by law, it usually creates a significant dust cloud in the work environment and contaminates coworkers.

"INTRODUCTION In the course of the investigation of manganese mineral occurrences in continental United States, the Bureau of Mines has collected several lots of ore from properties in the vicinity of Long Valley, Ariz. The ore occurs as irregular and random pockets in a brecciated zone. As only high-grade portions of the deposits obtained by selective mining would be acceptable as commercial-grade manganese ores, an investigation was made to determine amenability of the ores to concentration by ore-dressing methods. Several types of ores, differing in grade and mineral associations, were studied.Ores from the Vaiazza property are of special interest, owing to the successful application of silica flotation for their concentration. Ores from the Shroup and Conner-Hough properties are very similar but differ somewhat in their response to ore-dressing Method's. In all instances, the man¬ganese minerals are psilomelane and pyrolusite, with minor amounts of other manganese oxides. The country rook is a brecciated limestone; the diluent in the high-grade ore pockets is chiefly silica. The low-grade manganese ores are limestone replacements, and the chief gangue material, of course, is limestone."

Objective To accurately measure very low air velocities (0-100 ft/min) in U.S. large-opening underground metal/nonmetal mines. Background Hundreds of metal/nonmetal underground mines operate throughout the United States. They extract commercial products from deposits such as limestone, salt, and gypsum. Mining generates a wide variety of gases and dusts, such as silica, diesel exhaust, radon, blasting byproducts, and perhaps even methane. If these substances become airborne, they can adversely affect the health and safety of underground workers. Many metal/nonmetal mines have large cross-sectional airways that could be 60 times larger than an average underground coal mine entry. These large airways require adequate volumes of fresh air to dilute, make harmless, and exhaust the toxic and, at times, explosive byproducts. However, in some underground mine sections, air movement is barely perceptible. The technology of measuring very low air velocities will become increasingly more important for operators of large-opening stone mines in order to monitor miner exposure to diesel particulate matter. Conventional anemometers (e.g., vane) are capable of accurately measuring air velocities only above 100 ft/min. Thus, it was necessary to investigate other anemometry technology to detect low air velocities in the range of 0-100 ft/min. Two different portable ultrasonic anemometers were tested. Actual testing was done in an underground limestone mine with openings about 51 ft wide by 29 ft high. Ultrasonic Anemometers Vane-type anemometers are commonly used by engineering personnel throughout the underground coal mine industry. They work well in measuring air velocities >100 ft/min. However, a separate technology, e.g., portable ultrasonics, is needed to measure air velocities much below 100 ft/min at various places within the large mine opening. Laser-doppler technology was also considered for this application, but was ruled out because of its high cost and other technical limitations. With no moving parts, the portable ultrasonic anemometers are claimed to be accurate down to about 1or 2 ft/min. The first type of ultrasonic anemometer that was examined underground is manufactured by Gill Instruments Ltd., Hampshire, U.K. The U.S. distributor is IN USA, Needham, MA. The Gill Instruments Solent Volometer (figure 1) is a battery-powered, single-axis anemometer meant for measuring low to medium air flows up to1,999 ft/min. It uses the ultrasonic "time of flight" principle where pulses of high-frequency sound are transmitted along the air flow path and the time taken to reach the receiver is measured. The faster the air speed, the quicker the pulses reach the receiver. The second ultrasonic anemometer that was examined under-ground is manufactured by Airflow Developments Ltd., Buckinghamshire, U.K. The U.S. distributor is Airflow Technical Products, Inc., Andover, NJ. The Anemosonic UA-6 (figure 2) is a battery-powered, handheld instrument with digital display. It measures air velocity (0 to 9,999 ft/min) or volume flow, flow turbulence intensity, and air temperature. Neither device is considered to be intrinsically safe for use in underground gassy coal mines. A comparison of salient specifications of both instruments is shown in table 1. The total suspended weight includes the instrument (Gill) or instrument probe (Airflow) plus about 35 ft of connecting cable attached to the pole. This combination of instrument plus cable length allows two operators to measure air velocities up to about 30 ft above the mine floor. Figures 1 and 2 show how each unit would be attached to an extensible, graduated fiberglass rod in order to position the sensor probe at a certain spatial point (centroid of the quadrate) within the underground large opening.

A complete list of permissible mining equipment, rescue apparatus and gas masks tested. Prior to Jan. 1, 1929, w s published in Bureau of mines Information Circular 60972. The present list includes practically all equipment tested and. approved by the Bureau, up to and including July 1, 1929. It covers electric air compressors, coal drills, mining machines, loading machines, conveyors, mine pumps, room hoists,, mine telephones, rock-dusting machines, switches, electric cap lamps, flame safety lamps, electric hand and trip lamps, flash lamps, methane indicators and detectors, blasting units, storage battery locomotives, tandem locomotives, power trucks, concrete mixers, self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus and gas masks. The system under which these devices were tested permits the manufacturer, after his equipment has passed certain tests prescribed by the Bureau of Mines, to mark his equipment with a seal showing hat it has been "approved" by the Bureau. These tests are designs to insure that the equipment has the minimum requirements for safety in use. The only object of the Bureau in making such tests and publishing lists of permissible equipment is to safeguard the lives of workers and to help lessen the hazards of mining.

Steels with an alloying addition of depleted uranium were studied to develop successful melting , casting , and fabricating methods ; to obtain data on mechanical properties ; and to determine the effects of this alloying element . Uranium in amounts up to 1.5 percent was added to steel - base compositions containing approximately 0.5 percent carbon , 2 percent nickel , 0.25 to 2.0 percent silicon , and 0.75 percent manganese in both vacuum- melted and air -melted heats . Radiation levels were monitored for all operations . Bureau of Mines research at the Rolla Metallurgy Research Center showed that uranium additions did not increase tensile strength ; that hot - shortness occurred during forging above 1,090 ° C because of the presence of a low melting point constituent of a eutectic type ; and although a measurable amount of radioactive contamination resulted from processing , the quantity was never large enough to require the work area to be identified as a radiation area .
