The growing importance of halide metallurgy for preparing high-purity metals has stimulated research to extend halogenation reactions to the direct extraction of metals from low-grade sources. This Bureau of Mines investigation involves a pioneering study of chlorination reactions in the presence of a fluorine donor. Tin slags containing tantalum and columbium and a zircon concentrate containing a relatively high ratio of hafnium to zirconium were studied. Direct chlorination of these materials at 500° C. yields only a 5-percent conversion of tantalum and columbium or zirconium and hafnium to anhydrous chlorides. This investigation showed that small additions of calcium fluoride to the reaction increased the recovery of tantalum and columbium to 95 percent and the recovery of zirconium and hafnium to 27 percent. These results were achieved with ratios of calcium fluoride to mineral or slag of only 0.2. Silica, the major impurity in the materials studied, was found to be converted to silicon tetrafluoride during chlorination in direct proportion to the quantity calcium fluoride added to the charge. However, large additions of calcium fluoride decreased the volatility of the resulting halides of tantalum, zirconium, and hafnium. Smaller amounts of calcium fluoride also favored recovering minor metal constituents in the zircon concentrate (uranium, thorium, and rare earths).

THE MINERAL INDUSTRIES had a near-record year in 1950, as rising industrial activity in general, greatly accentuated by the outbreak of hostilities in Korea in midyear, called forth increasing supplies of mineral fuels and raw materials. The aggregate value of mineral production was second only to that in 1948, and the aggregate physical volume was exceeded only in 1948 and 1947. Lower coal production accounted for the failure to surpass these earlier years. Growth of production was fairly constant throughout the year, especially for crude petroleum; its physical output for the year as a whole exceeded that of 1949 by 7 percent. According to Federal Reserve Board indexes, other relative gains were 16 percent for coal, 9 percent for fuels in general, and 17 percent for metals. The increase for mining in general was of the order of 10 percent. This was not quite as large as the general increase in industrial production but clearly reflected the total-industrial trend (see fig. 1).

Crude-petroleum pipe lines in the United States on May 1, 1941, had a total length of 118,350 miles - an increase of 7,770 miles since Jun, 30, 1936, then the last previous survey was made by the Bureau of Mines. The expansion was due almost entirely to trunk-line construction, as the mileage of gathering lines was virtually unchanged from 1936. The greatest mileage of gathering lines, 53,640, was recorded in the survey of May 1, 1931. Both trunk and gathering-line mileage decreased moderately, in the interval from 1531 to 1936, but the present survey indicates that trunk-line facilities have expanded since 1936 to new high levels. Truck-line mileage equaled 55 percent of the total mileage of all crude lines on May 1, 1941, and 52 percent is 1936. The total length of gasoline pipe lines on May 1, 1941, was 9,001 miles this does not include several hundred miles of life under construction at that time or several hundred additional miles now being laid. No detailed surveys of gasoline mileage were made for 1, 1931, and June 30, 1936, but the mileage for those dates was about 1,400 and 4,600, respectively.

Numerous populations of assays have been simulated for a range of assay values representative of low-grade mineral deposits to facilitate the study of problems encountered in evaluating these deposits. Analysis of these simulated populations of assays (obtained by using statistical probability models for the simulation) makes possible the quantification of the effects of (1) various composite assay intervals, (2) ore reserve computational methods, (3) uneven assay intervals, and (4) various cutoff grades on both the precision and the accuracy of the estimated average grade and tonnage of ore.

Effective recycling or disposal of flue dusts is a continuing problem, particularly for secondary smelters treating low-grade Cu scrap. The Bureau of Mines investigated a variety of flue dust treatment approaches and demonstrated the technical feasibility of a bench-scale alkaline method that includes leaching, cementation, precipitation, and roasting. Flue dust was leached at room temperature with an alkaline solution of (NH4)2C03 and NHpH to solubilize ZnO and Zn metal. Some copper, lead, tin, and most of the zinc were dissolved in the leach step. Copper, lead, and tin were recovered in the cement product. The Zn in the flltrate was precipitated by pH adjustment to neutral using CO2 injection. The Zn salt was flltered from solution and roasted to give high-purity ZnO. The leach residue, enriched from 4.3 to lOA pct Sn, could find a ready market; the metallic cement product can be recycled back to the copper converter; and the high-purity ZnO product can be sold in several markets, leaving no material for disposal. The possibility for recycling of reagents, lower energy demand, and low environmental impact make this method economically and environmentally attractive for recycling secondary copper smelter flue dusts.

Surface mining drastically alters the ecological characteristics of the area disturbed and in some cases has a decided effect on surrounding areas. Vegetation is removed, topographic features and characteristics are changed, and the original geologic overburden profiles are destroyed. Spoil banks generally are a heterogeneous mixture of rock fragments, rock particles, and soil-sized material derived from the overburden strata. With proper mining techniques, the various strata can be partially or completely segregated. Segregation of over- burden material offers the opportunity to bury the toxic, acid, or salt-pro producing strata under growth supporting material. In some situations, lower strata may have more desirable characteristics than surface material and can be placed near or on the surface. For example, limestone strata appear in some lower overburden profiles that have shale and/or sandstone near the surface. Also, some lower strata have higher nutrient levels that have been leached from the surface. Experience has shown that natural revegetation is a very slow process on strip mined areas. Native vegetation may not be compatible with the environment on the mined areas, for example : 1. Low nutrients in the spoil. 2. Toxic spoils (very acid or highly alkaline ). 3. Surrounding vegetation may be of the climax type and may not have pioneer- or primary-invader-type species present. 4. The seed source may be to far away from the adjacent mined areas. Early attempts to revegetate strip-mined lands with trees also proved to be unsatisfactory as they did not provide the initial ground cover required to stabilize the spoil. Erosion control with trees only may take up to 10 years before the canopies close and an effective cover is established. They are slow to form soil profiles and do not provide effective chemical pollution control until long after planting. A quick growing cover of herbaceous species is necessary to obtain quick stabilization and initial protection against erosion by reducing runoff and rain-drop splash. This paper, describing the milling practice at the oxide concentrator of the International Smelting Co., is one of a series on milling methods and costs being published by the United States Bureau of Mines. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The oxide concentrator is properly an integral part of the Tooele plant of the. International melting Co., located 5 miles from Tooele, Tooele County, Utah. It has a capacity of 300 tons of ore per day and uses an all-flotation process to treat custom siliceous oxidized lead ores obtained principally from the Tintic district in Utah. Ores found amenable to the process are purchased on a custom basis, the principal tonnages being obtained from the Tintic Standard and North Lily mines.

The capital investment and operating costs of two methane-control systems used during longwall mining operations are compared in this Bureau of Mines report. Costs are given for a surface gob hole drainage system and an underground cross-measure borehole drainage system to control methane gas in gobs in four coal mining areas--central Pennsylvania, northern West Virginia, southern Virginia, and northern Alabama. Present-worth analysis is used to determine the more cost-effective alternative in each location. The alternatives have equal lives and provide the same service based on a minimum rate of return of 15 pet. In central Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia, the gob hole system is more cost effective than the cross-measure system, by 10 and 18 pet, respectively. In southern Virginia and northern Alabama, the cross-measure system is more cost effective, by 29 and 38 pet., respecitively. Costs for other locations must be developed on a case-by-case basis.

Variations in specific gravity of oil retorted from oil shales of the Eocene Green River Formation in northwestern Colorado were evaluated statistically, demonstrating that these variations are very strongly associated with stratigraphic position and less strongly but still significantly associated with geographic location. Specific gravity of oil retorted from these oil shales apparently varies with the carboxyl group content of the oil shale's organic matter. Higher temperatures accompanying increasing depth of burial probably progressively decarboxylated oil shale's organic matter producing the decrease of oil specific gravity associated with deeper stratigraphic position. The geographically associated oil-gravity variations were probably produced by regional variation in the original thickness of late Cenozoic extrusive rocks once overlying the Green River Formation.

Alluvial cassiterite concentrations are widespread in river gravel and high level terraces within the Ray River watershed. The area lies in unglaciated terrain of Alaska's northern interior. Cassiterite originates from several calc-alkaline plutons of the Ruby batholith. Extensional stresses resulted in graben-like Tertiary basins that were flooded by a 200 ft thick section of mid-to late- Tertiary basalt flows. Basalt blocked local drainages, and 50- to 100-ft of terrace gravel was eventually deposited on top of the flows. Further downwarping and eventual fluvial downcutting of the flows resulted in cycles of accelerated sediment transport, deposition, and reconcentration. Repeated erosional cycles concentrated heavy minerals and resulted in development of tin placers. Preliminary resource estimates of contained tin in Recent alluvium range from 62 to as much as 172 million lbs-Sn in 300 million yd3. Grade of about 90% of the gravels is estimated to range between 0.2- to 0.5- lbs-Sn/yd3. Associated gold and rare earth elements (REE) in monazite and xenotime may be recoverable. Most of the tin is considered a subeconomic inferred resource, though, at least some of the gravels contain 2-to 6-lbs-sn/yd3. Estimates are projected on the basis of surface sampling and several auger drill holes and are provided for the purpose of land-use management planning.

It was impossible to obtain a compressor that would develop this pressure therefore, the 'patentees developed and applied the Cardox method, which utilizes liquid carbon dioxide as the blasting medium."

This report describes Bureau of Mines laboratory test results in electro-kinetic dewatering and consolidation of metal-mine mill tailings from five mines in the Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, district. Classified (coarse) tailings, slimes, and unclassified material were separately tested. Tailings were placed in 0.3 ft3 plexiglass models, and dc potential was applied until dewatering ceased. Time-oriented measurements of water removal, changes in resistivity, and power consumption were recorded during the dewatering process. Moisture content and density of the dewatered material at test end indicated the method to be generally effective for all materials examined, but best results were achieved with well-mixed unclassified tailings.

There are techniques for separating aluminum alloys from mixed scrap, but there are no efficient ways to separate wrought aluminum from cast aluminum. This Bureau of Mines report describes a novel technique for separating mixed aluminum alloy scrap into cast and wrought aluminum alloy fractions. The technique, which uses conventional heating, fragmentizing, and screening equipment, exploits differences in the mechanical properties of cast and wrought aluminum alloys at elevated temperatures. The cast alloys become brittle at high temperatures owing to intergranular melting of regions of eutectic composition. This melting begins to occur as the solidus temperature for each alloy is reached. Solidus temperatures for casting alloys generally range from 520° to 580° C, but are above 600° C for most wrought alloys. Thus, the casting alloys are easily fragmented while the wrought alloys remain ductile in the proper temperature range. Starting with a mixture containing approximately 80 pct cast and 20 pct wrought alloys, fractions of 100 pct cast and 98 pct wrought have been produced.

The basic objective of this project was to determine the cost-effectiveness of dust control used on unpaved mine haul roads. Field testing was conducted at three surface coal mines (two in Wyoming, one in southern Illinois) for a total of 20 weeks. The highest control efficiency measured for a chemical dust suppressant, 82 percent, was for calcium chloride two weeks after application. Generally, however, the control efficiencies hovered in the 40 to 60 per-cent range over the first two weeks since application, and then decreased with time. After the fifth week, the limited number of data points suggest a control efficiency of less than 20 percent. Composite watering data were fairly uniform. Watering once per hour resulted in a TSP control efficiency of approximately 40 percent. Doubling that application rate increased the control effectiveness by about 15 percent to 55 percent. Chemical dust suppressants (primarily salts and lignons) can be shown to be more cost-effective than watering under some conditions. Columbium metal was electrorefined in a fused - salt electrolyte . Excellent results were obtained in lowering the impurity content in a 94 - percent columbium anode feed material to produce a 99.8- percent - pure metal . The reductions of the major impurities follow : Oxygen from 19,800 to 500 ppm , carbon from 9,700 to 25 ppm , iron from 9,200 to 630 ppm , nitrogen from 2,100 to 90 ppm , and silicon from 750 ppm to not detected . Columbium with a purity of 99.9 percent was produced from 99.5- and 99.8 - percent grades of columbium. The investigation was devoted to the evaluation of a fused - fluoride - salt electrolyte ( KF - NaF- K₂ CbF, ) for electrorefining columbium. The effects of the columbium concentration and the voltage upon the product's purity were investigated . The effect on the cathode current efficiency of ampere - hours of deposition and the formation of a dual valence state of the columbium was also investigated .

The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation of the Nightingale tungsten deposit about 38 miles north of Fernley, Nev., from September 1939 to March 1940, to determine possible resources of tungsten ore. The property was owned by the Gold, Silver & Tungsten, Inc., which maintained its offices in Boulder, Colo. Ore was discovered in 1917, and some ore was mined in 1918 and treated in a mill at Toulon, a station on the Southern Pacific Railroad, 40 miles east. Same shipments were made since 1918, but no production figures are available. The ore is mined from nearly vertical tactite bodies at the limestone-granite contact. The Bureau of Mines excavated 944 linear feet of trenches, drifted 52 linear feet, sunk a shaft 20 feet in depth, sampled the underground workings by cutting 743 linear feet of channels, sampled the surface trenches by cutting 415 linear feet of channels, and drilled 9 diamond-drill holes, totaling 3,000 feet. The ensuing sections note the location and physical features of the district and specify the property and ownership. The history of the mine is briefed, and the geology and mine workings are described. The work done by the Bureau of Mines is summarized and supplemented in detail by assay maps, logs of diamond-drill holes in appendix A, and a table of sample analyses in appendix B.

This report describes an investigation by the Bureau of Mines designed to provide background data for extending and improving the applications of chlorine metallurgy in extracting metals from ores. Optimum conditions are given tor chloridizing galena, sphalerite, and chalcocite by contact with chlorine gas. Petrographic and chemical analyses of the sulfides used in the experiments are listed. Graphs are furnished showing the extent of chloridization of each metal sulfide over the temperature range of the observations. In each case, the first tests were made with the reaction chamber at room temperature. This temperature was increased by regular increments in succeeding tests until the temperature was reached at which quantitative conversion of the sulfide to chloride was observed. The data are also plotted for screen-size fractions of the sulfide minerals investigated. Data show that the extent of metal chloride formation was affected by chloridization time, particle size of the sample, and usually, the temperature of the reaction chamber. At 300° to 400° C. an anomaly was noted for both galena and sphalerite. The temperature at which this anomaly was observed varied according to the particle size of the mineral. Comparisons are made between the chloridizing characteristics of the mineral sulfides and their chemically prepared counterparts.

This is the second of a series of information circulars dealing with the control of roof and the prevention of accidents from falls of rock and coal . Their purpose is to focus the attention of the coal-mining industry on the most - common source of fatalities and injuries in mining coal and to disseminate information that may be helpful in combating the roof - fall hazard . Inasmuch as approximately 85 percent of roof - fall accidents occur in the face region , the importance of analyzing the accident - producing aspects of methods of roof support at the face or lack of method overemphasized . - - cannot be This circular is not intended to be an exhaustive treatise on methods of roof support in face regions but rather is a description of several methods of support that appear to offer distinct advantages with respect to safety and efficient operation .
