The Bureau of Mines Helium Research Center has developed a computer program for solving two-phase equilibria data for binary mixtures and for evaluating thermodynamic functions of interest, including all critical points. This computer program was used to calculate equilibrium points on the PVTu surface for the helium-nitrogen system as predicted by the Van der Waals equation of state. Numerical values are tabulated and illustrations are presented for 1,279 equilibrium points and for quantities needed to construct Ponchon diagrams. Equilibrium ratios as a function of pressure at constant temperature and of temperature at constant pressure-are also shown graphically. In addition, saturated partial molal volume and partial molal enthalpy data are given. It is shown that the Van der Waals helium-nitrogen system exhibits retro-grade condensation of the second type for liquid helium concentrations of about 0.07 mole fraction or less and pressures below about 45 atm. It is also shown that the critical point is at a -maximum value of pressure (at constant temperature) and of temperature (at constant pressure).

The Bureau of Mines evaluated potential availability of domestic nickel from 23 deposits, Evaluations included an estimation of in situ and recoverable resources, applicable mining and processing technologies, and capital and operating costs. Discounted cash flow analysis with a 15-pct rate of return was used to determine the average total cost of production of each operation, Identified in situ resources contain 9.0 million metric tons (t) of nickel; 5.5 million t is recoverable as nickel metal or ferronickel. Demonstrated in situ resources contain 8.2 million t of nickel; 4.8 million t is recoverable as nickel metal or ferronickel. No nickel is available at a total cost of production equal to the January 1983 market price of $3.24 per pound. Analyses indicate that potential annual production can only meet current consumption levels at a total cost of production of $7.60 per pound of nickel, Nickel's availability is contingent on (1) successful adaptability of nickel processing methods to domestic resources, (2) location of a smelting facility, and (3) marketability of byproducts and coproducts. Analyses were performed on the effects of byproduct and coproduct revenues, energy, labor, and transportation costs, and metallurgical recoveries on nickel's availability.

The Bureau of Mines has studied the electrochemical parameters important to the preparation of coatings of the platinum-group metals. Using molten mixtures of sodium and potassium cyanides in an inert atmosphere, techniques have been developed that permit the preparation of baths for platinum, rhodium, and iridium electrodeposition. Cyclic voltammetric and slow sweep rate linear polarization techniques have been utilized to determine optimum potential and current values for preparation of plating baths and for the electrodeposition of coatings. Techniques are described for the deposition of platinum and rhodium coatings at near 100 percent anode and cathode current efficiencies, and for iridium at approximately 80-percent efficiency. Palladium deposition from these molten cyanide baths remains un-satisfactory. The chemistry of the palladium-containing cyanide bath is discussed. Examples of scanning electron microscope photomicrographs of typical platinum coatings are presented. Techniques are described for the preparation of platinum coatings on large objects.

This project, "Analysis of Men, Materials and Supplies Handling Systems in Underground Metal and Nonmetal Mines" documents the productivity and safety aspects of the existing equipment and systems utilized in transporting personnel and supplies from the surface to the underground production work place. The Present Systems Study (this text -Volume II) documents the productivity and safety of existing men and material movement systems for six representative underground metal and nonmetal mines. Identification of common problem areas was performed using recognized industrial engineering techniques. The back-up data for the industrial engineering analysis of each mine is included as respective appendices (Volume III). A summary of the study background material, six mines' problem areas, comparison of problem areas, problem analysis, and solution recommendations are included as the project final report (Volume I), bound under separate cover.

The basic mining law of French Morocco is the Edict of 1914, "Danir of Jamary 19, 1914, for the Regulation of Mineral Prospecting and Exploitation in the Zone of the French Protectorate of the Cherifien Empire," which, as the preamble states, was promulgated at the instance of the Director General of Public Works, in consideration of the fact that mines constitute one of the sources of wealth of the Empire. According to a consular report, dated May 18, 1923, by Bradford, men- tioned above, the mining industry of that country, aside from the exploitation of the extensive phosphate deposits, can scarcely be said to exist, but the potential field for mining is promising. However, no large-scale exploitation of the mineral wealth of French Morocco can be hoped for until there is complete pacification of large areas that are still in an unsubdued state or until adequate transportation facilities, scientific prospecting, and large investments of cap- ital are assured. An edict in 1920 (Dahir of January 27, 1920) modified the law mentioned above by declaring the prospecting for and the exploitation of phosphates to be exclusively reserved to the Government. The Dahir o. August 7, 1920, announced the creation of the Cherifien Phosphate Office (Office. Cherifien des Phosphates), a State monopoly charged with the exploration, management, and exploitation of the phosphates of Morocco.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a rapid, accurate method of analysis for small amounts of calcium in wolframite concentrates. This analysis is necessary to determine if the wolframite concentrates meet United States National Stockpile Specification P-57R2, which limits the calcium content to 0.2 percent. Because of the small depth of the sample analyzed in fluorescent X-ray spectrography, the calcium Kaline intensity was a function of the chemical composition of the calcium-bearing particle as well as the total matrix composition. This particle-composition effect was particularly important in this analysis, as the calcium may be present as a carbonate, tungstate, phosphate, etc. Three methods of preparing the sample eliminated the variation of calcium Ka intensity with mineralogical occurrence: (1) Reduction in particle size by extensive grinding, (2) chemical fusion with sodium carbonate, and (3) solution of the calcium by an acid attack.

Studies were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to develop a method for fabricating Sm-Co permanent magnets. This method consisted of arc-melting, crushing and grinding the alloy, alining and pressing the powder, and sintering the green compacts. Results indicated that the optimum composition was 36.7±0.3 weight-percent Sm and 63.3±0.3 weight-percent Co. This composition was obtained by blending together Sm2C07 and SmCo5. The maximum values exper¬imentally obtained were MHC = 27.4 kOe, BHc = 7,510 Oe, Br = 7,810 G, and (BH)max = 15.1 MGOe. The optimum sintering temperatures and grinding times for maximum MHc and (BH)max were determined. Lowering the grinding temperature from 0° C to -60° C resulted in a significant increase of magnetic properties.

"The development of certain mines in the East Tintic mining district, Utah, has been hindered considerably by the presence in the rock strata of heavy irrespirable gases which at times flood the lowest working places, as well as by abnormally high rock temperatures in the lower horizons. A study of these features was completed in the spring of this year, and the information obtained is summarized here.Heavy gases.Only four mines have been affected to date by the presence of heavy gas, and only one of these is producing lead-silver ores in quantity. These four embrace a territory extending about three miles north and south and about two miles east and west, while both within and fringing on this territory are a number of prospects which have not been affected.Thus far no fatalities have resulted from gas inflows, but a number of men have been temporarily overcome, and a few have had narrow escapes from death by suffocation. That the record is not more serious is mainly due to the fact that the gas inflow, as a rule, is relatively slow, mining operations have been quite carefully conducted, and the presence and extent of a gas inflow can be easily determined by its extinguishing action on the flame of miners' lights.When first encountered, about 1910, gas inflows occasioned much lost time. In some months the lost time averaged as much as ten days, while one mine cites for a certain month a maximum of 26 days lost out of a possible 28 working days. With improvements in mechanical ventilation and the passing of time, interference with work from the presence of gas has gradually lessened. During the last few winters, the main trouble has been with the mines being flooded with gas overnight when fans were not operated, although men have been driven out of the lowest development openings several times each winter with fans operating. At present, the main danger is in the lowest development openings having only one exit, wherein men might be trapped and possibly suffocated during an unusual and extremely rapid inflow of gas, or during an ordinary inflow, should the one source of power for the fan be disabled."

Electrical dewatering tests are described in which the laboratory cells were designed for continuous operation using an endless metal belt as the anode . The test slurries were dilute , containing from 2.5 to 14.4 percent solids (specific gravity of 1.02 to 1.10 ) that were all minus 8 microns in size . Recovery of the solids of low water content was the practical objective of the investigation . Process variables evaluated and reported are : The effect of feed rate , amount of electrolyte , samples from different sources , and the use of two cells in series . These variables are evaluated on the basis of yield of clay per kilowatt - hour , recovery , and the amount of solids in the deposited clay . Recovery , yield , and solid content of the belt anode product are interdependent , and changes that will improve one of these characteristics often are accomplished at the expense of the others . Tests in which recoveries range from 50 to 60 percent usually result in yields of 8 to 9 kilograms (kg ) of dry clay per kilowatt- hour (kwhr ) . Under these conditions , the solid content of the deposited clay approximates 50 percent . One test sample , composed of kaolinite , showed very high yield , 13 to 16 kg per kwhr ; high recovery , 53 to 58 percent ; and 52 to 54 percent solids in the cake .

A major problem encountered in dump leaching operations is the plugging of both the dump and the piping by precipitated iron compounds. Bureau of Mines research to obtain basic data on agitation leaching and dump leaching methods has shown that the addition of organic chelating reagents can significantly enhance the lixiviant permeability through the ore and the concentration of the metal values in the liquor. For example, the addition of 5 giL citric acid (CA) to a conventional sulfuric acid lixiviant almost doubled the fluid flow rate through 5-cm-diameter laboratory columns containing copper ore. After 185 h of per-colation leaching, the metal concentrations with (and without, in parentheses) CA were 1.7 (1.5) giL Cu, 200 (70) ppm Mn, 160 (40) ppm AI, and 6 (3) ppm Co. The enhancement of metal concentrations with chelating reagents such as CA was confirmed by determining the solubil-ity of several metal ions as functions of pH and chelating reagent con-centration. When ferric ions became insoluble at pH values above 3, the concentrations of other ions also decreased. The addition of che-lating reagents kept iron, as well as the other dissolved metals, in solution even at pH values as high as 5. Citric acid was a more effective chelating reagent than gluconic acid, oxalic acid, or sodium lignin sulfonate.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated 191 composites from the central Mesabi Range, Minn., chiefly by reductive roasting and magnetic separation. After reductive roasting and magnetic separation at minus 325 mesh, 28 composites produced concentrates that contained an average of 66.0 percent iron with less than 10 percent silica. Recovery of contained iron was over 90 percent. Natural magnetic material in excess of 5 percent was present in 142 composites. Trial flotation tests were used to evaluate three samples unresponsive to reductive roasting and magnetic separation procedures, and satisfactory concentrates having low silica contents (averaging 6.6 percent) were achieved.

The Bureau of Mines investigated a roast-leach process for recovering a marketable lithium product from a montmorillonite-type clay deposit located on the Nevada-Oregon border. The clay sample treated in the investigation contained 0.6 wt pct Li. The lithium recovery process consisted of several unit operations. The lithium silicate compounds in the clay were converted to Li2SO4 by roasting a pelletized mixture of clay, limestone, and gypsum at 900° C in a direct-gas-fired rotary roaster. Water--leaching the calcine at 40 pct solids extracted the Li2SO4. Lithium recovery from the leach solution involved concentrating the solution by evaporation, adding Na2CO3 to the concentrated solution to precipitate Li2CO3 , and filtering the slurry to obtain the product. The product filtrate was recycled to the evaporator following a crystallization step. About 80 pct of the lithium in the clay was recovered as 99-pct-pure Li2CO3. Process operating costs were estimated at $2.12/lb Li2CO3 produced; the current Li2CO3 selling price is $1.48/lb. Raw materials. accounted for 30 pct of the total operating cost.

During investigation of the occurrence of manganese deposits in the western United States, the Bureau of Mines collected 2-ton samples of 4 ores from 3 properties in northeastern Nevada. Laboratory tests were made to determine the amenability of these ores to ore-dressing methods of concentration. The Caviglia-Vietti property is situated 11 miles southeast of Ely, White Pine County, Nev. The ore deposits are lenticular veins and irregular masses found in limestone fracture zones and along the contact of limestone and underlying shale. Two samples, of the ore were tested: Lot A, from the Vietti shaft, and lot B, from the. Caviglia shaft.

"This report describes the trend of developments in electric brass-furnace practice in the last two years, and supplements Bureau of Mines Bulletin 202, ""Electric Brass-Furnace Practice"", which was published in 1922. In that bulletin it -as pointed out that some of the lines on which electric brass-furnace progress would take place were clear, but others were less so.Developments in foreign countries.Foreign brass-melters have not yet adopted electric melting to an extent comparable to its use in the United States. It is doubtful Whether all foreign countries combined use 100 electric brass furnaces; of these about 35 are of American make (Ajax, Detroit, Baily) and are operating in Canada, Mexico, England, France, Japan, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Norway, Germany, Argentina and Czecho-Slovakia.`The Rennerfelt furnace finds some use in Sweden (1)c, notwithstanding its high metal loss on alloys high in zinc, Two German firms are reported(2) to be using the Rochling-Rodenhauser induction furnace on bronze, the average energy consumption being given as 400 kw.-h. per ton. No comment is made on any trouble from the ""pinch effect"", A firm in Switzerland is reported (3) to use three 600-lb., direct-arc furnaces of its own design to melt babbitt, antimonial lead, coinage silver, nickel, copper, and brass. The metal loss on yellow-brass turnings is high. Use Of a direct-arc furnace in England, with precautions aimed to prevent surface overheating, vas abandoned (4) in favor of an Ajax furnace."

"Accidents at coal mines in the United States in September 1926 resulted in the loss of 170 lives, according to information furnished to the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, by State mine inspectors. Of this number 125 occurred at bituminous mines and 45 in the anthracite field. As the bituminous output of coal for September was 48,976,000 tons, and the production of anthracite was 8,444,000 tons, the fatalities reported represented a death rate of 2.55 per million tons for bituminous mines and 5.33 for anthracite mines. The industry as a whole showed a fatality rate of 2.6 per million tons of coal produced in September 1925 the rate for bituminous coal mines was 3.29; the anthracite mines were idle in September last year due to a strike.During the first nine months of the present year 1,759 men have been killed by accidents at the coal mines throughout the United States, resulting in a death rate, per million tons of coal produced, of 3.76 as compared with 3.95 for the same period in 1925. Reports for bituminous mines alone showed a nine-month fatality rate of 3.53 which was about the same as the corresponding rate from January to September in 1925. The anthracite rate for the present year, however, shows a decrease of about 17 per cent; that is, the rate has declined from 6.36 to 5.28.Records covering the first nine months of 1926 show that 12 ""major"" disasters, that is, disasters in which five or more men were killed at one time, have resulted in the loss of 271 lives as against 10 disasters and 199 deaths in the corresponding months in 1925. The fatality rates for these disaster: alone were 0.579 and 0.465, respectively. One major explosion occurred at Tahona, Oklahoma, on September 3, 1926, in which 16 men lost their lives.An analysis of the principal causes of the 1,759 fatalities for the first nine months of the present year shows a reduction in the death rate as a whole and for falls of roof and coal and for explosives, but an increase in haulage, gas and dust explosions, and electricity. Methods are described for filling underground cavities remotely with dry material pneumatically injected through a borehole to seal openings, prevent air movement, and reduce subsidence; this often brings underground fires under control by limiting the access of air. Large-scale tests were made in the Bureau of Mines Experimental Coal Mine, Bruceton, Pa., in an operating mine, and in an abandoned Pennsylvania mine. Supplemental trials were made aboveground in galleries and in the laboratory. The parameters studied include horizontal and inclined passageways, obstructions in the entry, water leakage into the borehole, dry material, and grout and slurry mixes. The materials studied were fly ash, crushed and pulverized limestone, and sand. Best results were obtained with dry fly ash, though satisfactory seals were obtained with the other materials. When a borehole is dry and ends at an open void, casing is not necessary. If more than 5 gpm of water flows in the borehole, if the void contains loose debris, or if coarse material is injected, a material feedpipe should be inserted through the borehole. Fly ash was most suitable for remote filling because of its low angle of repose (8°) and its good flow characteristics. The depth of borehole through which the fly ash is injected has no appreciable effect on the filling operation.

"Importance pf the small stone problem.Profitable disposal of limestone too small for making lime in the shaft kiln, is one of the most urgent problems in the lime industry. Reports received by the Bureau of Mines from 31 quarries show that the proportion of small stone varies from 2 to 40 per cent, averaging 18 per cent of gross pro¬duction, Modern methods of heavy blasting, and the use of crushers in large quarries tend to increase the proportion of small stone above that produced in early days when light blasting and hand sledging were almost universally used. There is also a growing movement toward underground operation of lime deposits, a method which in general produces a greater proportion of fines than is encountered in open-pit work. Thus the small stone problem is of growing importance, and demands the attention of every progressive lime producer. As the problem is of almost universal interest, it is urgently desired that every operator who reads this report will contribute from his knowledge or experience, answers to the questions on the final sheet.There are several markets in which small stone may be sold but in these markets the competition is generally keen and the prices low. The lime producer's chief product is lime, he understands its manufacture and marketing, and brings him a greater return than can be obtained from most limestone by-products. For these reasons it is evident that the conversion of small into lime is the nest desirable means of disposal."

Extensive spectroscopic data are needed in making reliable vibrational assignments for use in calculating thermodynamic functions of polyatomic molecules. The fundamental vibrations of organic molecules may be observed at any wavelength from 2.5 to 200 microns (micron = µ = 10-4 centimeters), but most often in the region from 3µ to 50µ. Raman spectra generally cover the range in which fundamental vibrations occur, but equally important infrared spectra usually are not measured at wavelengths longer than 25µ. This limitation results because most infrared spectra are determined for analytical purposes, which seldom require information outside the region 2µ to 25µ. Measurements of infrared spectra in the range 15µ to 35µ recently were begun by the Bureau of Mines to obtain data needed in making vibrational assignments. This report presents the spectra of the following thirteen compounds: Tetrahydrofuran, 1-methylpyrrole, piperidine, 2-methylpyridine, 3-miuthylpyridine, 2-propanethiol, cyclopentanethiol, 2-methyl-2-butanethiol, 3,3-dimethyl-2-thiabutane, cyclohexanethiol, cyclopentyl-l-thiaethane, 2,4-dimethyl-3-thiapentane, and hexamethyldisiloxane.

Model testing is a two part operation; first, to assure the valid¬ity of the mathematical statements and second, to evaluate the accuracy of the computer model for predictive purposes. Verification of both the conceptual and computational aspects can be achieved through the use of input data for which output results are available for comparison. In this dissertation, two test problems were selected for model testing from the Economic Evaluation Reports of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Process Evaluation Group. Verification Data Set I Input data for this test was selected from an economic analysis of a hypothetical 1,056,000-ton-per-year mine in a 48-inch bituminous coal seam (Process Evaluation Group-Report No. 72-27, 1972). The mine was scheduled to operate five days per week, three shifts per day, 220 days per year with an estimated life of 20 years. Coal reserves covered an area of 6.4 square miles with an expected recovery rate of 70%. Production was achieved through 4 continuous miner sections with an average production rate of 400 tons per shift. The cost summary in the report included a breakdown of equipment and labor requirements. A depreciation schedule listed the expected capital expense per year of operation, assuming capital replacement with identical units and no change in the unit cost. Supply and oper¬ating costs were listed in both gross annual figures and cost per ton of production. To make a thorough survey of a coal mine in order to eliminate hazards, the competent safety engineer must be familiar with mere than one branch of engineering. It is essential that he know the properties of mine gases and the methods of detecting them, as well as hew to prevent dangerous as accumulations. It is also essential that he understand the action of overlying strata when the coal is removed, and the proper methods of protection by timbering or other suitable means of support. He must know the value of protective clothing in reducing injuries and mast be informed as to the correct handling and use of explosives to avoid premature blasts, misfires, and ether failures in blasting practice. He must understand hew to operate locomotives and cutting, loading, and various other types of machines to be able to recommend effective safeguards for protecting the men who use them in addition to being informed as 'to these and many ether activities connected with the mining of coal, he must net overlook electrical engineering if he wishes to combat the fire, shook, and ignition hazards attendant upon the use of electrical machinery and circuits in and around the mine intelligently. There are many points relating to safely in the selection, maintenance, and use of electrical circuits and equipment that are perfectly obvious to the electrical engineer but perhaps are not se evident to those not trained in this particular branch of engineering. Engineers of the U.S. Bureau of Mines who have made a special laboratory study of electricity as related to safety in minus haw e also made inspections of electrical installations at a large number of bituminous mines. These inspections have revealed practices and conditions that not only do not contribute to safety but that add nothing to efficiency and economy in the operation of the mine.
