The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducts basic and applied research related to predicting, eliminating, and/or controlling rock bursts in underground hard-rock mines and coal bumps in underground coal mines. An important element in this research is the development of a reliable and efficient microseismic source location technique. This report presents the results of a Bureau study to develop and evaluate a new algorithm to locate microseismic events based on the Simplex method, a powerful linear programming technique. The technique was tested on both field data and simulated data. Microseismic event source locations obtained with this new Simplex-based algorithm were shown to have less error than those locations obtained using a least squares method. It was concluded that the Simplex approach to source location of microseismic events can be used effectively in microseismic monitoring.

Several processes for the production of ultra-clean coal for electrode carbon were developed in Germany prior to and during World War II . These processes have been investigated since the end of the war by the British and U. S. Government missions . As the reports of the investigations are not readily available to the public , it is the purpose of this paper to present the information which has been obtained regarding the methods by which ultraclean coal was produced . Almost all the ultra-clean coal was used in the manufacture of electrodes for the production of aluminum and magnesium . Standard raw materials for making these electrodes are pitch coke and petroleum coke , which are nearly ashless . The inclusion of ash in the electrode carbon results in lowered efficiency and impure metal from the reduction process . Petroleum coke and pitch coke were in very short supply in Germany during the war , so that it was necessary to augment the supply with carbon produced from coal . In the emergency , methods were developed to clean coal which had never before been economically feasible . However , a demand for nearly ash-free coal might develop in the United States if a shortage of petroleum coke were to occur at the same time as a strong demand for light metals . Other uses of ultraclean coal are in direct hydrogenation of coal , in production of activated carbon, and for special fuels . Specifications for electrode carbon are rather severe owing to the necessity for producing pure metal . Maximum amounts of impurities allowable in American practice are as follows : Total ash , 1.0 percent ( in finished coke , 0.7 percent ) Silica , 0.08 percent Ca or Na, or their sum , 0.12 percent Sulfur , 2.0 percent Ba , Ni , Cr , Mn , Co , and V are objectionable in very small amounts . The most important process for ultra cleaning of coal in Germany was froth flotation . Froth flotation had been used widely there to process washery -water sludges and to recover coking coal from high - ash fines . Its use was indicated , therefore , when the demand for ultra low-ash coal arose . In two plants the coal cleaned by froth flotation was treated with acid or caustic to lower further the ash content . Another process used on an industrial scale was that of dissolving the coal substance in the middle oil from direct hydrogenation of coal under controlled pressure and temperature . The resulting paste was heated, filtered , and the oil distilled off . The residue was a low-ash organic material that could be carbonized for electrode carbon or could be hydrogenated directly . Several other processes had been developed to the laboratory or pilot - plant stage but had never been used on a commercial scale . These processes included cleaning by centrifugal action , cleaning by electrostatic action , and cleaning by forming a paste with oil in water . The coal-preparation plants at the Carl Alexander mine , Augusta Viktoria mine , and Kőenigin Elisabeth mine are described in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7389 : " Coal Preparation Practice in Western Germany" , by Thomas . A field test was designed to inject a specially formulated two compound epoxy resin into the roof rock ahead of a working face to cement fractures and formation interfaces at the Westmoreland Coal Co., Winding Gulf Div., Eccles No. 5 Mine, Eccles, West Virginia. Five 30 foot long X 2 inch diameter, hold were drilled at an angle of 15° above the plane of roof line front the face of a working entry. The epoxy resin compounds were pumped through a proportioning unit and mixed in-line before being discharged into the drill hole under treatment it injection pressures up to a maximum of 450 psig. When the coal face was advanced an anomalous failure of the roof rock occurred in the treated section. Further testing was suspended until the cause of the failure could he determined. The polymers were tested, under confined conditions, in 2 inch pipe columns. Extreme temperature and pressure (up to 2400 psig) rises were recorded as they cured, It was concluded that this pressure source fractured the rock and caused the roof failure. The entire program was terminated after it was determined that the heat rise and resultant high pressures could not he controlled chemically or mechanically.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted an experimental and theoretical study of coupled chemical kinetic and mass transport processes during leaching of pyrite from coal in a counterflow, "trickle-bed" column reactor. Spatial and temporal data on reactant and product concentrations were used as solutions to appropriate continuity equations, which in turn define chemical kinetic reaction rates. Data from four 180-by 30-cm column leaching experiments using coal, coal waste, and air-water and air-FeC13 lixiviants have been analyzed. The rate of leaching was found to be diffusion limited (probably by Fe3+) and not controlled by bacterial action. Rates of pyrite oxidation were found to vary with elapsed time (80 to 225 days) and followed a bell-shaped curve, sometimes with a delay before start of reaction. Maximum rates of reaction ranged from 3 to 10 (mmol/d)/L (column) for coal waste and 0.4 (mmol/d)/L (column) for coal. Reaction was 30 to SO pct complete, probably due to precipitation of product salts (e.g., jarosites), which impede transport of oxidant through the coal. An absorption-desorption model of solids leaching, which considers the role of heterogeneous porosity in solids leaching, was used to describe time-dependent leaching rates.

The Bureau of Mines studied the compaction characteristics of metal and nonmetal tailings. Densities of the tailings and zone of compaction influence, compactive effort, and cost of equipment are related to changes in the factor of safety for specific grain-sized tailings and embankment configurations. Field testing was accomplished in two distinct phases. The first phase investigated the effectiveness of using a nuclear gauge on metal and nonmetal tailings to produce rapid, instantaneous measurements of moisture content, wet density, and dry density. The results of the nuclear gauge testing are presented in chapter 1. Chapter 2 presents a comparison of the compactive effectiveness of three different pieces of construction equipment on a coarse-grained metal tailings pond. The three pieces of equipment chosen for study were a DBH track-mounted dozer, a DSOO rubber-tired dozer, and a SP848 vibratory smooth-drum compactor.

During World War II, when the curtailment of imports led to an unprecedented demand for domestically produced mica, beryl, and other pegmatitic minerals, the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey entered upon a program designed to expedite the production of these minerals from the Black Hills area of South Dakota. The program involved mapping, sampling and drilling many pegmatite dikes found in the southern portion of the area and beneficiation tests in the field and in the Bureau of Mines laboratories at Rapid. City, S. Dak., Rolla, Mo., Salt Lake City, Utah, and College Park, Md. This paper describes the mode of occurrence and the sampling and beneficiation tests on one dike, the Helen Beryl pegmatite, which was investigated as part of the general pegmatite study in South Dakota. Investigation of the Helen Beryl Pegmatite by the Bureau began in August 1943 and was terminated in April 1944. During this period the Bureau took a series of bulk samples from pits for beneficiation tests, drove an adit through the center of the dike to obtain feed for a bulk-sampling plant operation, and finally drilled a series of long holes to sample the deposit further. Geologists of the Federal Geological Survey mapped the deposit and the faces of all excavations and logged drill holes from sludge samples recovered from long-hole drilling.

This is one of a series of information circulars describing mining and milling methods being published by the Bureau of Mines. The Summitville Consolidated Mines, Inc., is the only company now active at Summitville. Since the holdings of the company include those of most of the former producers of the camp, the paper virtually becomes a description of the Summitville district. The field data were collected from August 23 to 28, 1937. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The writer gratefully acknowledges his indebtedness to H. F. "Electron spin resonance (ESR) spin trapping methodology has been used to study the reactions of manganese dusts with glutathione, employing a-{4-pyridyl-1-oxide)·N-tert-butyl-nitrone (PBN) and 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) as spin traps. The results show evidence for the glutathionyl radical formation in the reactions of both MnO2 and manganese (Ill) acetate with glutathione. Based on these experimental observations, we hypothesise that the mechanism of neurotoxic effects of manganese might be due to the fact that the generation of glutathionyl radicals depletes the glutathione pool and reduces the glutathione shield against free radical products of dopamine metabolism and manganese induced reactive oxygenated species. IntroductionExposure to manganese compounds often occurs as the result of foundries and mining operations (1. 2). Other significant sources of environmental manganese include coal-fired power plants and burning of residual and crude oil (3, 4). Lately gasoline combustion has also started to contribute since manganese (methyl cyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl. 0. 125 g/gallon) is being used instead of lead as an antiknock ingredient in automobile fuels (5. 6). Although manganese is an essential element in certain biological processes it is toxic in excessive amounts. The manganese toxicity is mainly associated with the nervous system (7-9). Symptoms frequently observed in manganese poisoning or manganism are disorientation, memory loss, anxiety, compulsive laughing and crying, mask-like faces, akincsia rigidity and tremor (10). In spite of numerous investigations to understand the mechanism of manganese induced injury. it has not been possible to localize the initial chemical lesion responsible for altered physiology and ultimate cell death. This may perhaps he the reason for failure in developing a successful therapy for manganese intoxication."

In view of the developments and recent interest in recovering heavy oil , this report was prepared to present general information on more than 2,000 heavy oil reservoirs in more than 1,500 fields in 26 states . Information given on each heavy - oil deposit includes the following items : Field and formation , location , average or range of depth , average API gravity of oil , average thickness of formation , areal extent of field , total productive wells drilled in field , discovery date of field , field status in 1963 , cumulative production to Jan. 1 , 1964 , and all known types of secondary - recovery operations initiated ( active and terminated ) in the reservoirs . The geographical location of heavy oil accumulations in the United States is shown by a map , and a brief discussion of 14 different areas is given in the text . As of Jan. 1 , 1964 , 75 percent of the heavy oil reservoirs in the United States had produced more than 10 billion barrels of oil and are estimated to contain over 90 billion barrels of oil in place . It is also estimated that if the deposits which have had little or no production history , such as the one in Missouri , were included , the total remaining heavy oil in place would be in excess of 150 billion barrels . To find economical ways of recovering this vast reserve of heavy oil , industry is developing technology in several types of thermal - recovery methods . Some of the general considerations and more suitable limitations in selecting a prospect to study for thermal - recovery techniques are : Lithology , depth , viscosity of reservoir fluids , gravity of oil , reservoir thickness , oil in place , and permeability and porosity .

Three trials with oxygen-enriched unheated blast air are described. The trials were conducted in the Bureau of Mines experimental blast furnace located in Bruceton, PA. The first trial utilized moisture addition to the oxygenated blast. The second and third trial were conducted with natural gas injection. The test was basically a feasibility study and in that regard the practice was demonstrated to be feasible and also have possible advantages over hot blast operation. The testwork was conducted in 1964 and 1965 as part of a continuing study of iron making technology in cooperation with several North American Steel Companies.

This report presents the results obtained in a study of the technical feasibility of recovering a usable pig iron by pyrometallurgical treatment of typical copper reverberatory slags . The iron in the slag was readily reduced with carbon , but the copper and sulfur content of the metal was best controlled by a three - stage procedure comprising ( 1 ) melting the slag with pyrite to remove copper as a low- grade matte , ( 2 ) smelting the partly decopperized slag with fluxes and carbon to reduce the iron , and ( 3 ) refining the impure iron alloy from step 2 with a flush slag to remove sulfur and residual copper . Laboratory - scale tests demonstrated that washing with 8 wt pct of pyrite lowered the copper content of a typical reverberatory slag from 0.58 to 0.12 Subsequent smelting of a mixture composed of 70 pct decopperized slag , 25 pct lime , and 5 pct coke reduced 84 pct of the iron to metal containing 2.27 pct sulfur . This metal then was successfully desulfurized by treatment with a basic flush slag to produce a finished metal that contained , in percent , 93.5 Fe , 0.02 S , 0.26 Cu , and 4.9 C. Overall recovery of iron under the conditions of trial was about 80 pct . This could be increased if higher tolerances for copper could be accepted . Commercial processing would be accomplished in three furnaces with molten materials passing from one to another . Currently produced smelter slag could be treated fairly inexpensively , because the molten product would require only a little additional heat to produce an iron byproduct that undoubtedly would be attractive to local foundries .

The Bureau of Mines is engaged in research to evaluate the effects of cutter bit wear at coal mine faces. This paper addresses one element of conical bit wear, bit rotation. A discussion on mounting configura-tion and bit forces and their effects on rotation is presented. The effects on rotation and bit forces of bit attack angle, cutting depth, and skew are determined for two types of conical bits during linear cutting of sandstone-inclusive rock. The results indicate that a 10° negative skew angle and 35° attack angle produce the maximum rotation of 17.5° for each foot of cutting. Data on bit rotation and bit forces are presented in an appendix.

The objective of this Bureau of Mines investigation was to determine the effects of adding manganese compounds and ores to iron ore pellets. Manganese dioxide, carbonate, sulfate and chloride, plus six manganiferous ores from the Minnesota Cuyuna Range were tested as additives to increase the manganese content of iron ore pellets. One to 5 percent manganese, as a compound or ore, was added to five magnetite concentrates and one hematite concentrate. These concentrates were ballad, indurated (1,300° C), and tested for reducibility. Manganese sulfate and chloride were unsatisfactory additives causing cracking and degradation of the pellets during reduction. Manganese dioxide, carbonate, and the ores were satisfactory additives. The additives increased pellet compression strengths with a corresponding loss of reducibility, as compared to the pellets without manganese additions. The changes in compression strengths and reducibility were caused by the formation of Jacobite spinel and slag within the pellets. However, when the induration temperature was lowered from 1,300° to 1,200° C the reducibility and compression strengths were comparable to the pellets without manganese additions indurated at 1,300° C.

Silica , or silicon dioxide , ( Si0, ) , occurs in a free state chiefly as quartz , but hydrous silica ( amorphous silica carrying a variable amount of combined water , 2 to 13 per cent ) , occurs as opal , flint , diatomaceous earth , tripoli and so on . Quartz is found in many forms , the most important of which are ; As vein quartz; quartzite ; sandstone ; silica sand and gravel ; as crystals or crystalline grains , masses or aggregates in igneous rocks such as granites , dicrites and pegmatites . Commercially silica is used in many ways , but ordinary uses of sand and gravel are so well known that they will not be considered here .

Manufacture of high-grade ferromanganese; as a rule; requires a low-phosphorus-manganese ore with 45 to 55 percent Mn, chiefly obtained in the Soviet Union, the British Dominions, and Brazil. Also, low-manganese ores have already been used for ferromanganese production, especially in North America .and Germany. During World War I, a process was developed in which a high-phosphorus ferromanganese or spiegeleisen was prepared in the blast furnace from law- or high-phosphorus manganiferous ores, then low-phosphorus manganese slag was prepared by refining under an acid slag, and this material was, worked into a low-phosphorus ferromanganese in the blast furnace.9/ Manufacture of useful manganese ores from a phosphorus-bearing spiegel with 12 to. 15 percent Mn, 4.5 percent C,, and 0.5 percent P by slagging in a refining furnace was reported by Joseph, Barrett, and Wood.10/ The spiegel was refined to 0.75 percent Mn, 3.4 percent C, and 0.45 percent P. Thereby, a slag with about 43 to 58 percent Mn and, about 10 percent Si02, was obtained. Hotter melts gave a smaller phosphorus content in the slag than cold melts. In addition, the phosphorus content of the slag varied with the manganese content of the intermediate metal.

As part of the Demand Evaluation Program of the Bureau of Mines to determine future needs for minerals, a study was instituted to develop and describe a methodology for approaching the problem of substitution between mineral commodities and between mineral commodities and other materials. The report comprises three sections: A review of general factors relative to substitution, a case study of the effect of substitution on zinc die-casting markets in recent years, and a general methodology for reviewing materials substitution with specific emphasis derived from reviewing substitution in the domestic zinc die-casting markets.

The western phosphate field, comprising parts of Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Utah, contains one of the world's largest known reserves of phosphate rock. Although phosphate-rock deposits of good-grade have been known since before the turn of the century and production has been recorded since 1906, real development of this important field did not begin until immediately after World War II. Since then fertilizer-manufacturing facilities using western phosphate rock have been expanded, and three electric-furnace plants for producing elemental phosphorus have been installed, resulting in a rise in mine production from 323,955 long tons2/ in 1945 to 1,653,916 long tons3/ in 1953. Interest in the field is increasing, and it is reasonable to expect that the western phosphate industry will continue to expand. Before 1945 all western production was from underground mines. In that year the first strip mine in the field was started near Montpelier, Idaho,~ and in sub-sequent years a number of other open-pit mines were opened in southeast Idaho and western Wyoming. At present the major part of the production comes from surface mines. Underground mining has continued, and new underground mines have been opened in the field, but recent exploration by operating companies has been aimed primarily at developing additional deposits suitable for low-cost surface mining. Preliminary reserve estimates by the Federal Geological Survey5/ indicate that only a very small part of the total resource may be recovered by surface methods and that the industry eventually must depend largely on underground mining. Because one function of the Bureau of Mines is promoting the conservation and development of the Nation's mineral resources, it is appropriate that research be conducted to develop low-cost maximum-recovery underground mining methods applicable to western phosphate-rock deposits.

The mine of the Porter Coal Co. is located at the town of Porter in the northwestern part of Jefferson County, Ala., about 20 miles west of Birmingham. The operations in this mine are confined to the middle and bottom benches of the Mary Lee bed. The coal from the Porter mine is handpicked and washed before being placed on the market. The handpicked lump coal and the washed egg and nut coal are sold chiefly as domestic and steam-raising fuel. The coal finer than 1 inch is washed in 2-compartment jigs and utilized in the manufacture of metallurgical coke. The coal company has found that, when coal ranging in size from 1 to 0 inch is washed in jigs, a considerable amount of high-ash material finer than 3/16 inch remains in the washed coal. This paper gives the results of an investigation which was conducted for the purpose of determining the washing characteristics of the through 3/16-inch raw coal and the extent to which the ash might be reduced by means of coal-washing tables. This investigation has been made in connection with an extensive study of the coal-washing problems now being conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama, with the cooperation of the coal-mining companies of the State.
