"The paper describes the results of the flotation tests with complex rare metal ores from deposits in the Trans-Baikal Territory. Correlations between the quality of produced wolframite, hubnerite and mica concentrates with or without the presence of various alkaline modifiers are determined. Commonly, rare metal ores contain minerals of comparable value to main elements recovered in processing plants using gravitational methods. The paper describes the results of flotation recovery of valuable minerals – main and associated – from gravity tailings of deposits in the Trans-Baikal Territory. It was found that gravity tailings from the first deposit contained fine-grained wolframite, mica (muscovite, lepidolite etc.), feldspar; hubnerite, scheelite, beryl, fluorite, rubidium-containing muscovite from the second deposit, correspondingly. This paper presents the results of the stage flotation tests with the production of tungsten (wolframite, hubnerite), fluorite and mica concentrates from gravity tailings. Figure 1 demonstrates the flowsheet of tungsten ore minerals and mica stage flotation from gravity tailings of the first deposit.Wolframite can be floated using oleic acid with the presence of soda ash, a complexing collector (IM-50), under slightly alkaline conditions in combination with a nonpolar collector [1, 2, 3, 4]. The study included wolframite flotation using the combination of two alkaline modifiers. Flotation of wolframite was performed after pulp desliming, using tall oil saponified with soda ash. The recovery of wolframite in the concentrate of rougher flotation reached 80-85%; the concentrate contained up to 1% of tungsten oxide that can be upgraded to a saleable product using gravitational methods. This procedure was tested during flotation of wolframite, tantalite-columbite and pyrochlore, and provided high performance regardless of a season, at pulp temperatures of 8-10°C, though fattyacid collectors are significantly inefficient at such low temperatures due to low solubility, dispersion and increased collector consumption, consequently. The introduction of two alkaline modifiers in pulp appears to improve these characteristics.The first stage of the tests was focused on increase of iron-bearing tungsten ore minerals recovery from gravity tailings and stabilization of the cold pulp flotation process."

At times the phosphate industry, in Florida, encounters phosphate rock that gives lower than expected P2O5 recovery in the rougher plant section. The drop in recovery is typically 10% and as much as 30% or more. Variations in feed quality from day to day, shift to shift and even from drag-line to drag line, represent a challenge to the beneficiation plant operators and reagents? suppliers. Therefore, this characterization study has been initiated to identify the reasons for the differences in flotation behavior of such feeds. The study involves many samples to cover such variations. The characterization work includes: ? Mineralogical and chemical analysis; ? Size, shape, surface roughness and porosity analysis; ? Surface charge and surface contamination with other phases (minerals); ? Clay content and its relationship to phosphate and silica particles. The results correlated with flotation data and adsorption density measurements clearly establish the statistically significant variability in characteristic features that influence flotation response. This article discusses results from the above listed studies. On the basis of the obtained data, recommendations of practical approaches to overcome the problem of feed variability in phosphate flotation plants are delineated.

"The Chelopech epithermal arsenic bearing high-sulphidation, copper-gold deposit located in Bulgaria is often referred as the richest European gold deposit currently under exploitation. Key points from the flotation circuit of the processing plant have been sampled and selected physicochemical parameters measured. Plant survey has followed with selected samples being submitted to chemical and mineral liberation analysis (MLA). Quantitative analysis has enabled to link the flotation response of the main copper bearing minerals with the physiochemical parameters (Eh, DO, EDTA extractable Cu and Fe) being measured. Data from mineral liberation analysis have highlighted an important process-relevant information explaining the variable floatability in the various granulometric classes.The low chalcopyrite recovery could be linked to the non-sufficient amount of dissolved oxygen measured in the copper selective flotation circuit. Given the finely-disseminated copper bearing minerals, the observed copper losses inside the flotation could be also explained by the insufficient degree of liberation of the mineral grains. Suggestions for improvement in metallurgical recovery are therefore proposed.INTRODUCTIONThe Chelopech deposit is a high sulphidation (HS) volcanic-hosted epithermal gold-copper one (Bonev et al., 2002; Kouzmanov et al, 2009; Strashimirov, et al. 2002). It is considered as one of the largest and economically most important ore deposits in Bulgaria, and often is referred to Europe’s largest currently mined gold resource. It is located in the Srednogorie zone which falls within the central sector of the extensive Tethyan–Eurasian copper belt formed during Mesozoic–Cenozoic time along the southern margin of Eurasia. The Srednogorie zone has the features of a subduction-related, Late Cretaceous island arc, with development of a calk-alkaline to sub-alkaline volcano-plutonic magmatism and associated hydrothermal ore deposits (Bonev et al., 2002).Ore mineralisation occurs as veins, mineralised breccia, and massive sulphide replacements and disseminations. Three mineralisation stages have been identified at Chelopech deposit. An early pyrite–marcasite mineralisation (stage I), characterised by disseminated to massive pyrite followed and partly brecciated by enargite– luzonite and tennantite–chalcopyrite–bornite (stage II) mineralisation. The gold is met in ores belonging to the stage II. Sphalerite and galena veins characterise stage III, best developed below and adjacent to the pyrite–enargite– chalcopyrite ore bodies. Advanced argillic altered volcanoclastic rocks commonly host this mineralisation (Chambefort and R. Moritz, 2014)."

Because of its simplicity, economy and biocompatibility, research regarding the use of microorganism for decontaminating heavy metals produced by many industries is an area of growing interest. Also, there is a stringent need for the control of toxic metals produced during various production processes and released into the aqueous environment in order to avoid damage relevant to soil or groundwater contamination. Among the available treatment technologies, sorptive flotation has been considered as a promising alternative for the wastewater treatment. In the present study Streptomyces lunalinharesii strain was applied as bioreagent for the removal of copper, cadmium and zinc. The removal of those metal ions depends mainly on the respective pH value, influencing the aquatic speciation during the process, as well as the zeta potential of the system and biomass concentration. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms have been depicted. Dispersed air flotation was applied as the subsequent separation method for harvesting the suspended metal laden microorganisms, following the biosorption of copper, zinc and cadmium. The investigated parameters (in batch mode, laboratory scale) were in this case the saturator pressure, the coagulant concentration and the recycled flow. Applying the optimum defined conditions, over 60% removal of metal ions have been achieved in one stage and simultaneously, quantitative separation of the used (metal-loaded) biomass has been obtained.

Long-chain ionic surfactants, with fatty acids and amines as the most important representatives, are widely used as collectors in froth flotation. These surfactants, generally referred to as weak electrolyte collectors, frequently form solid insoluble precipitates within a certain pH range. However, the action and behavior of these colloidal precipitates in froth flotation systems are not well understood and has not been well decoupled from those of dissolved forms. The objective of this study was to understand and compare the role of colloidal precipitates with that of the dissolved forms at gas-liquid and gas-liquid-solid interfaces. Using primary amine as the model surfactant, experiments were carried out to measure: the maximum volume of bubbles generated in the presence of dissolved and precipitated forms of the surfactant; surface tension for both forms of the surfactant using the drop shape and maximum bubble pressure methods; and contact angle using the sessile drop method. The experimental results showed that: in the presence of the precipitate, bubble volume was smaller, which was correlated with the lower surface tension and higher contact angle measured; the surface tension of solutions containing surfactant precipitate was affected by the surface age of liquid droplets. This study enhances understanding of the interfacial behavior of long-chain ionic surfactants under different conditions, which would help improve the efficiency of reagent utilization in froth flotation.

"Despite the lip service that has been paid to pro-active plant maintenance processes over recent years, a significant portion of maintenance in industry is still reactive. The business driving force to prevent expensive production opportunity costs arising from “break-down maintenance” is obvious. Various benefits can be derived from successfully deploying remote equipment diagnosis technology and associated business processes.From an end-client’s viewpoint these include the ability to predict and take actions to prevent equipment breakdowns, increasing the lifetime of equipment by responding to appropriate operating instructions and therefore improving the return on capital expenditure. Better planning and scheduling of maintenance priorities and resources with performance measures like an Equipment Health Index are also possible. The knowledge that a qualified supplier engineer is constantly in touch with the operating conditions of their equipment, albeit remotely, is more than a comfort, and can be translated into quantifiable cost savings and improved supplier service levels.This paper analyses the reasons for the inadequate level of pro-active plant maintenance practice in industry today, and presents a number of important criteria in selecting appropriate solutions to this problem. A case study of a specific real-time, remote equipment management application is presented."

"Evaluation of inequalities of the partial sums defining cumulative grade and recovery prove that cumulative grade has an upper bound not dependent on the bank number and cumulative recovery possesses an upper bound proportional to the bank number. This explains one observed characteristic of cumulative grade versus cumulative recovery curves. The existence of such maxima combined with the observed shape of cumulative grade-recovery curves leads us to postulate that these curves can be well described by rectangular hyperbolae. Rectangular hyperbolae are characterized by asymptotes at right angles to each other. It is proven that this property can be used to derive an equation for the cumulative mass flow of the concentrate in terms of the asymptotic values of cumulative grade and cumulative recovery. Fitting hyperbolae to experimental cumulative grade cumulative recovery plant data then results in estimates of the maximum grade, the maximum recovery and a constant which may be taken as a performance coefficient of a row. Normalization of the cumulative grade and the cumulative recovery by their respective maxima gives rise to a graphical representation that can be used to evaluate the operating performance of a row of floatation bank cells. The normalization procedure removes the bias that is introduced by inevitable variation in mass flow of the feed and variation in feed mineralogy or feed particle size distribution. Reduction of the normalized data collapses all cumulative grade-recovery data onto one and the same curve. This removes the differences caused by the variation in row performance. The reduced cumulative grade-recovery data scatters around a common hyperbola. This can be used to gauge the validity of the assumptions made. Normalized cumulative mass pull is determined from the fitted values of the maximum recovery and maximum grade. This may serve as an alternative performance indicator of the floatation row."

"Large volumes of mine tailings accumulated in surroundings of porphyry copper deposits represent a growing threat to environment. They contain significant concentrations of toxic metal and metalloids which can contaminate river runoff, ground waters or can be transported by wind. Both extreme pH of fluids in tailings impoundments and high surface areas of processed mineral grains provide their increased reactivity. As a result, during only a few decades, As, Cu, and Mo can be mobilized, redistributed through the tailing column and accumulated through post-deposition leaching, evaporation and contamination with natural fluids. Those processes are reflected in the forming of secondary minerals. Gypsum, Fe oxides/hydroxides, efflorescent salts and clay minerals are typical alteration products in tailings. Here we present the results of reactive transport simulations implemented on the base of PHREEQC and SUTRA codes. The one-dimension model emulates the mass balance between rainfall, evaporation and subsurface runoff, the kinetically- and thermodynamically-driven dissolution of tailing minerals, advective and diffusive transport of tailing fluids, and precipitation of secondary phases. A typical tailing column is composed of four unequal layers with predominance of (i) evaporation, (ii) secondary mineralization above, (iii) below water table, and (iv) near the bottom of dump. Those horizons are characterized by contrasting pH, chemical composition and bulk mineralization of pore fluids, distinct accessibility of atmospheric oxygen and, as a consequence, distinct intensity of sulfide oxidation. The modeling and its verification on Chilean tailings impoundments reveal the complexity and high rates of secondary mineralization. The accumulation of toxic alteration products is controlled by fluid transport through the tailing column induced by both rainfall/evaporation and exchange with subsurface runoff. The geochemical modeling is a powerful approach which allows comparing the processes in tailing deposits produced by distinct flotation regimes and providing the long-term predictions of their environmental impact as well as identifying sectors of tailings for possible re-processing."

The application of the stirred media mill in dry mode came to the front only in recent years, but at the same time several questions arise, such as aggregation, agglomeration, sticking on the liners and the grinding media. During high energy milling, not only the particle size reduces, but among others, in numerous cases the crystal structure and the amorphous state of the material also change due to the mechanical activation taking place. The present paper deals with experiments carried out on the ultrafine fly ash grinding in dry mode at various grinding conditions in a stirred media mill to investigate the mechanochemical effect and the energy efficiency of the mill. During the experiments the particle size distribution, particle shape, specific surface area, amorphity and crystal structure of the products were examined. The product related stress model was used for the evaluation of the effect of milling parameters on the mechanical activation. It was found, based on the experimental results, that there is mechanochemical effect on crystal structure of fly ash in the stirred media mill, as it was revealed by X-ray diffraction and FTIR measurements. The experimental results made it possible to determine the effect of the rotor circumferential speed and so the stress intensity on the mechanical activation of fly ash could be revealed.

"Flotation of arseno bearing minerals from their copper ore has been an interest due to the increasing awareness on protecting the environment by minimizing the possibility of exposed arsenic compound. Some approaches have been proposed, but the mechanisms of separations have not yet fully understood. In this study, oxidation using oxygen was applied. Instead of the complex copper ore flotation results, pure single mineral of tennantite and chalcopyrite foatability was conducted using Hallimond tube. Resembled with the flotation results of copper concentrate containing tennantite, the separation possessed the best result at alkaline condition (pH 11) at where the arsenic content was reduced from 3300 ppm to 1800 ppm. In order to be able to understand the mechanism of the separation atomic force microscope (AFM) was utilized. AFM images showed changes in morphology and behavior when minerals were treated in both acid and alkaline condition. It was found that the morphological change showed the reaction products representing the rate of reactivity of tennantite and chalcopyrite. From the measured force of adhesion, it can be observed that in alkaline condition the surface of both minerals is more hydrophilic than that in acidic condition possessing higher value. This is in accordance with the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra in which hydroxide moieties occupied the mineral surface in alkaline condition while elemental sulfur is in acidic condition."

"The aim of the research was to increase technological parameters of the flotation of finely disseminated scheelitecarbonate ore using selective reagent regime.In the studies the monomineral fractions of scheelite and calcite; samples of the scheelite-carbonate ore of the Primorsky deposit with the range of the carbonate module 3-65 were used. A carbonate module of ore is the ratio an initial assay of calcite to an initial assay of scheelite. Sodium oleate, iso-decyl alcohol, water glass, calcium chloride, soda or sodium hydroxide as flotation reagents were used. The flotation method in the Hallimond tube and in a mechanical cell, an adsorption method for study the kinetics of adsorption of oleate and isodecyl alcohol and its combinations on scheelite and calcite, IR spectroscopy including ATR to study the composition of surfacecompounds were applied. Selective reagent regime may include two ways - a combination of collectors or a modification of depressants of calcite and other gangue minerals. On one hand the combination of sodium oleate and higher fatty iso-alcohols of fractions C12-C16 in the rough scheelite flotation to reduce the flotation activity of calcite has been studied. On the other hand depression of calcite flotation by calcium chloride with water glass into rough flotation was used; modified the steaming cycle by Petrov's method applying change the concentration of water glass and other. Fatty iso-alcohols can adsorb on the surface of the calcite that reducing the adsorption of sodium oleate and floatability of calcite has been fallen. Their co-adsorbing with oleat on the scheelite surface were support the hydrophobization and flocculation of slime particles of scheelite. Flocculation of the particles of scheelite leads to increased up 3 times of the recovery of scheelite from the slime class, and calcite change up only 1.4-1.1 times it’s recovery.The growth of the carbonate module more than 11 is decreased the assay of WO3 in the scheelite concentrate of selection cycle."

The aim of this work is to compare three different results of charge motion in a modified 5ft diameter lab mill and to identify differences and similarities in these results. The lab mill is modified from tumbling a ball charge to tumbling a charge of disks. This modification replicates 2D motion. This 2D condition is measured using an instrumented disk (iDisk) and analysed using a video imaging system. The iDisk is equipped with a 3D accelerometer array and rotation rate sensors. With the help of a video system, some measured quantities are also determined externally. The results of these three predictions or measurements are presented. A discussion is included.

The effect of particle shape on true flotation has been widely reported. The present paper presents results obtained in investigating the effect of particle shape on the entrainment of particles during the flotation process. Different hydrophilic minerals with particles of varying aspect ratios were used and their shape determined using rheological tests and QEMSCAN. Their entrainment properties showed a close relationship to their shape with the recovery due to entrainment increasing as the aspect ratio of the particles increased. The effect of surface charge, by changing pH, and size of particles showed that the effect of shape was sustained at different pHs and particle sizes. Proposals are made to explain these observations in terms of the known relationships between drag coefficients and terminal velocities and shape. Since it has been previously reported that different milling procedures can affect particle shape, these results indicate that it is possible that such different procedures may result in increased entrainment of hydrophilic minerals.

Gold thiosulfate complex is difference with gold cyanide complex, which is easily adsorbed on activated carbon while gold thiosulfate complex cannot be satisfactorily recovered by activated car-bon. However, Gold thiosulfate could be recovered by activated carbon if cyanide is added into the thiosulfate solution. To avoid the cyanide solution, this paper will review several possible processes to recover the gold from thiosuldate solution: such as the cementation with metals, ion exchange resin and solvent extraction. The gold cementation with the powders of zinc, copper, iron and aluminium will be discussed. The advantage and disadvantage of each are compared. The consumption of thiosulfate and copper and feasibility of solution recycling will be discussed. The gold recovery by some ion exchange resins will be suggested. The processing conditions, its applications and the resin elution methods will be presented. The gold recovery by using solvent ex-traction will be reviewed. The processing conditions of solvent extraction process are discussed and compared.

"Some of the challenges faced by the mineral industry in the future are the need to process low grade ores at the lowest operating cost, to deal with elevated energy cost and to address scarce water resources in some regions of the world. These challenges will increase the demand to develop highly energy-efficient and less water-consuming mineral processing systems. Experience from other industries suggests that HPGRs could help to achieve these goals, due to their high energy efficiency and their ability to be used as dry grinding systems. Historically, HPGRs have been used mainly as tertiary crushers in mineral applications for the production of ball mill feed. In the cement industry, however, HPGR systems have been successfully applied for grinding limestone, clinker and slag to a final product fineness (p80) of between 30 and 90 µm without the need of downstream ball milling. The total energy consumption of HPGR finish grinding systems in the cement industry has been found to be 30 to 50 % lower than in ball mill systems. This leads to the question of whether the same methodology can be adopted in the mineral industry. Such a step would require the use of dry rather than wet grinding systems. Traditionally, dry grinding systems have been only an exception in mineral processing, since most post grinding processes are wet. However, there are successful - mainly ball mill based - dry grinding examples in gold, nickel or iron ore. Experience from some of these dry grinding references are summarized in this paper. In addition, this paper explores two future-orientated questions: What opportunities does HPGR finish grinding offer the mineral industry? What are general conditions and challenges for adopting this technology for mineral applications?"

A dual-drive planetary mill, which has a rotating shaft that sweeps a circle of diameter 750 mm, has been designed. The planetary mill is powered by a 5 hp motor to rotate the main shaft and a 3 hp motor to rotate the jars. The charge dynamics inside the horizontal-axis planetary ball mill was established using three-dimensional DEM simulations. The simulation results provided data to determine the impact energy distribution and the effect of process parameters such as mill speed and filling. It has been observed that the mean impact energy per unit time increases with rotation-to-revolution ratio, whereas the average number of inter-particle impacts per unit time decreases. The mill was also used to synthesize a variety of powders. Here three case studies of reaction milling are briefly presented: (i) cementite and silicon carbide, (ii) oxide dispersed strengthened (ODS) steel, and (iii) magnetite from blue dust. In each case, the powder was produced by mixing and then milling the corresponding pure components. The phase evolution, particle size distribution, and morphology of particles during milling were studied for various samples collected at different milling times using laser size analyzer, SEM, TEM, and Mössbauerspectroscopy. The results established a convenient way to produce powders of high technological and commercial value.

Involvement of various indigenous microorganisms in extracellular and intracellular iron oxide formation is a convincing index for iron ore biogenesis. Biomineralization of various iron oxides such as hematite, magnetite, goethite and limonite with the participation of aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms is well established. Various aerobic and anaerobic bacteria such as Gallionella, Leptothrix, Acidithiobacillus, Thermoplasmales, Pseudomonas, Bacillus spp and Shewanella putrefaciens, which are implicated in the formation of higher and lower oxides of iron have been isolated from different iron ore deposits. Diversity of microbial life in iron ore deposits can be put to beneficial use such as selective removal of undesirable constituents such as silica, alumina, clays, phosphorous and calcite and also to bring about environmental detoxification. Role of microorganisms such as Paenibacillus polymyxa, Bacillus subtilis, Yeasts and a sulfate reducing anaerobe in the biobeneficiation of hematite is illustrated. Surface chemical changes brought about by bacteria - iron ore mineral interactions are discussed with respect to hydrophobcity, adsorption isotherms, zeta potential data and bioreagents generation. Bacterial adaptation to minerals such as hematite, quartz, alumina, calcite, apatite and clays results in secretion of mineral ? specific biosurfactants such as proteins and polysaccharides. Such bioreagents can be used as selective collectors, dispersants and flocculants in iron ore beneficiation. Research results are highlighted to demonstrate silica, alumina, phosphate, calcite and clay removal from hematite. Environmental friendliness of such biobeneficiation processes is demonstrated with respect to biodegradation of toxic amine collectors, utility of ?in situ? organisms in enhancing settlement of fines in tailing dams and water harvesting. Carbochlorination tests were conducted with matched particle-size fractions of rutile, ilmenite and high-titania slag in a small bubbling fluidized-bed reactor. The effects of temperature, the type and proportion of solid reductant in the charge, and the fraction of Cl2 in the fluidizing gas were investigated. Tests confirm the need for solid carbon in the bed if chlorination is to run at high rates. With solid carbon in the bed, CO supplied with the fluidizing gas does not increase significantly the degree of chlorination after 75 minutes. Ilmenite is chlorinated more quickly than titania slag, which in turn is chlorinated more quickly than rutile. Rates of chlorination at 1100°C and 1000°C are much the same and significantly higher than at 900°C. Chlorination is associated with significant increases in particle porosity (even for rutile), which is brought about by the rapid initial chlorination of FeO and MnO (in ilmenite and slag) and (it is argued) by the chlorination of Ti2O3 which forms at high-energy surface sites. A reaction mechanism is presented; where possible, its validity is demonstrated by the support of empirical observations.

The significant capital and operating expenditure of size reduction operations have maintained comminution on the spotlight of mineral processing research during the last century and, more recently, the concerns about the impact of these operations on the sustainability of the minerals industry, will remain to do so in the 21st century. One of the most popular approaches that have been used to deal with these challenges is the application of simulation both to reduce the uncertainty in the design and improve the operation of size reduction operations. From the initially purely empirical approaches, including the energy size reduction ?laws? and the phenomenological approaches, of which the traditional population balance model is, arguably, the best example, comminution modeling now reached a point in which more fundamental and mechanistic models are sought. The paper analyzes some of the advances that now make multiscale modeling of comminution processes realizable. On the microscale, greater understanding of the phenomena involved in fracture and fragmentation of single particles under different stressing conditions now exists. Particle breakage testing methods are currently used in a routine basis by industry and good quantitative descriptions of different breakage mechanisms are now available, although research is still required to develop appropriate models for a couple of them. On the macroscale phenomena, the discrete element method (DEM) has been successfully used not only to provide insights but also quantitative information on the transfer of mechanical energy from the machine to the grinding media in mills and to particles in crushers, while smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to describe fluid flow. The paper also analyzes the importance of modeling mesoscale phenomena in size reduction, which is the interaction of particles forming assemblies or beds of particles, demonstrating some of the areas requiring further attention. Examples of application of the multiscale modeling approach to the inadvertent comminution of ore lumps during handling, to the comminution in vertical impact crushers and tumbling mills are demonstrated. The processes and fluxes of a cast iron foundry plant located in the North of Italy were analyzed in order to determine the amount and kind of wastes produced from the different activities. The main fractions are the molding sands, furnace muds and powders coming from the dust abatement plant, the exhaust lime, the furnace refractory, the metallic shotting and the sludges and powders coming from the dust abatement plant of molding lines for a total production equal to 800 t/d. All wastes were sampled and particle-size and chemically characterized to evaluate the best recycling or reuse solutions. Wastes were sieved and divided in three categories according to the particle-size dimensions: below 0.1 mm, between 0.1 and 0.6 mm and above 0.6 mm. The fraction above 0.6 mm dimension underwent magnetic separation to recover and quantify the potentially available iron fraction. The fraction between 0.1 mm and 0.6 mm was chemically characterized in order to understand if it could be fed to the sand regeneration plant. The below 0.1 mm fraction was characterized to evaluate the following recycling and reuse solutions: additive for molding sands and/or raw material for the concrete industry.
