Effective flocculation and dewatering of slurry streams containing clays (particularly kaolin and smectites which are often <200nm in lateral dimension) is becoming increasingly urgent. Release of water (often >75 wt%), for recycle and reduced make-up water consumption, from slurries in tailings streams and dam beds is usually slow and incomplete. Changes in settling rates and solids density of tailings containing clays can be achieved in practice by changes in pH, dissolved cations and flocculant additions. To achieve fast separation of clays from water and minimization of retained water, individual particles need to be bound in the initial stages of thickening into large, high-density aggregates, which may sediment more rapidly with lower intra-aggregate water content. Quantitative STIMAN (STructural IMage ANalysis) cryo-SEM imaging, shows that the structure of aggregates formed before flocculant addition has a determinative effect on these outcomes. Without flocculant addition, 4 stages occur in the mechanism of primary dewatering of kaolinite: initially separate particles and aggregates are dispersed (<0.3GP, where GP is the gel point); a partially-gelled chain network then forms linking particles edge-edge (EE) still well below the OP but remains largely suspended; after an induction time, this network structure rearranges from EE to face-face (FF) contacts densifying, compacting and dewatering the aggregates with settling rates well above Stoke&apos;s Law estimates for >20µm particles or aggregates; the GP is rapidly reached during settling producing a network spanning the vessel with compressive strength. This sponge-like structure with EE oriented particles limits slurry dewatering because the steric effect in the resulting partially-gelled structure is much more dominant than the electrostatic effects predicted by DLVO theory. Van der Waal&apos;s forces at very close distances, as particles slide across each other, may be responsible for the EE to FF change in structure. In this way, the previously extended network contracts, and when the solid volume fraction is low, the continuous network breaks apart forming aggregates and aggregate associations as flocs which arc able to freely settle. These densified aggregates settle at increased rate, give lower bed density and retain less water after drainage. With flocculant addition, the internal structure and networking of the pre-aggregates is largely preserved but they are rapidly and effectively bound together by the bridging action of the flocculant(s). The STIMAN analysis shows that there is a inverse correlation of intra-aggregate porosity (and void permeability) with Darcian permeability (and extent of dewatering) whereas there is a strong positive correlation of Darcian inter-aggregate permeability with settling and primary dewatering rate.

The energy systems of the future will be highly renewable. The flexibility that is consequently required can be provided with many options, the main ones being energy storage, transmission reinforcement, and demand side management. The role of the latter is explored for the copper industry, using the scheduling of maintenance services as an example of Solar-Paced Design - the coupling of energy demand with solar resource availability. We used a linear energy optimization model to define the minimum-cost configuration for a fully renewable energy system of a copper concentration plant under different scenarios for the scheduling of maintenance services. For the case we studied, (total) costs were 4% lower when the maintenance was scheduled in winter. We expect that exploring the potential of such Solar-Paced Design in the copper industry will allow new potentials for a more cost-effective full renewable energy supply of this critical industry. INTRODUCTION The mitigation of climate change requires a worldwide transformation of the energy system by the significant expansion of renewable energies and the electrification of various sectors and processes (Teske et al., 2015)(International Energy Agency IEA, 2018). Moreover, considering the decreasing costs of renewable energy technologies and the intensive use required to deliver the goals in the Paris Agreement, we can expect to have highly renewable energy systems in the near future. However, to rebuild and expand our energy systems, we need certain materials, including copper. Also, energy systems based on renewables are more copper-intensive than conventional ones (Kleijn, van der Voet, Kramer, van Oers, & van der Giesen, 2011). The mineral industry, in turn, needs clean energy to achieve a better environmental performance (e.g. solar energy for copper production (Moreno-Leiva et al., 2017)) and to avoid negative secondary effects induced by the strong expansion of clean technologies. But there is something else the minerals industry can offer in this bi-directional relation with energy systems.

"Abstract -The Kipawa yttrium-zirconium prospect is located about 150 km south of Noranda, Quebec . Yttrium-zirconium mineralization occurs in an elongate, regionally metamorphosed and deformed peralkaline complex in the Grenville terrain. The mineralized zone, as defined by ? 0.10% Y203, is 1300 m long and 10 m to 30 m wide. Zirconium content typically ranges from 0.50 to 1.20% Zr02. The mineralized zone strikes northwest and dips 20 degrees to 35 degrees to the southwest. It occurs at the structural base of the peralkaline complex in syenite gneiss and cale-silicate rocks and is conformable with both the footwall contact of the complex, and the layering and gneissosity in the enclosing rocks. Minerals of economic interest are eudialyte (sodium-zirconium silicate), mosandrite (sodium-titanium silicate), britholite (calcium-silica phosphate), and a few other uncommon zirconium and titanium silicate minerals.The highest and most continuous yttrium grades occur in the upper part of the syenite gneiss unit in areas containing eudialyte, mosandrite and rninor britholite. Yttrium also occurs in britholite in cale-silicate rocks and in mosandrite in syenitic rocks in the lower part of the syenite gneiss unit. Both the yttrium-bearing minerals and yttrium grades are erratic in the lower part of the unit. Zirconium is generally more uniformly distributed than yttrium. A peralkaline granite gneiss phase of the complex intrudes the syenite gneiss and possibly truncates it, and the mineralization, near the southern boundary of the mineralized zone.The mineralized zone is coincident with a radiometric anomaly and discontinuous yttrium and zirconium soil anomalies.More drilling and metallurgical studies will be required to determine the economic viability of the yttrium and zirconium mineralization at Kipawa."

In order to remain competitive the mining industry must keep up with changes in technology. Many innovative technologies from the mining perspective are commonplace in other industries. A ?Global? review of technologies will often reveal existing technologies that can be innovatively applied in the mining industry. Industries, which are rife with proven solutions include, medicine, biotechnology, security, manufacturing, telecommunications, etc. This paper addresses the communications aspect of mining where greater productivity, lower costs and the ability to quickly react to mining related events is obtained through an increase in remote monitoring and operating control. A review of the communications systems in place globally reveals technologies that, with minimal modification, can be immediately applied to the mining environment. We discuss the concept, advantages and implementation of existing communications technology from an industry that is not usually associated with the mining industry. This technology will form the basis of a solid platform on which can be built a state-of-the-art process monitoring, control, and communication system. This lays the groundwork for providing one solution to the underground mining industry?s most difficult problem, establishing a reliable, maintainable and cost-effective underground bi-directional wired/wireless data, video and analog communications system. We need look no further than our own doorsteps to find such a solution. The cable that you see coming from the simple green or brown box on the boulevard into your home contains hundreds of television broadcast channels, FM radio channels and data channels. And if you have a set-top box, you are in control of it all. The Cable Television Broadcast Distribution System suppliers of today are at the leading edge of converging all the different methods of communications onto a common carrier, coaxial cable or fibre optic cable. There is no fundamental difference between providing a reliable communications network to a city/neighbourhood/home/personal computer than there is to a mining operation/underground level/equipment or person. The principle is the same. Only the application is different. Realizing this, we can capitalize on the efforts of other industrial sectors, to solve our communications problem. Where else can you find a solution to a problem that is mature, having been developed with the input of thousands of engineers, and having hundreds of millions of dollars spent on research and development, manufacturing, distribution, global presence and engineering support?

"Construction of the first stage of the tailings disposal facility for the Montana Tunnels Project was completed in October 1986. The project is located 37 km south of Helena, Montana, and involves mining of42 million tons of weathered diatreme are at a rate or 13 500 tpd to produce a gold/silver dore, as well as lead and zinc concentrates. The tailings disposal facility for the project includes a fully drained tailings impoundment for storage of the tailings solids, and a process waterpond for storage of all decanted water prior to recyling to the mill. The over-all facility is designed to achieve the basic objectives ofminimizing seepage to the environment in the short- and longterm, and achieving a fully drained stable tailings mass suitable for immediate reclamation on completion of mining. Specific features of the design include a soil bentonite seal and drainage system within the tailings basin, a free draining embankment with a design flow-through capacity of 4000 US gpm and an ultimate height of 230 ft (70 m), and a soil bentonite lined make-up water pond with a capacity of 420 acre-feet (530 000 m&apos;). The tailings will be discharged in a rotational sequence through multiple spigot offtakes to achieve a thin-layer low energy laminar flow. This &apos;sub-aerial&apos; deposition results in higher stored densities and maximizes liquid-solid separation on the tailings beaches. The over-all design played a major role in the successful permitting of the project, and was significantly cheaper than a conventional wet disposal system, with overall unit costs for tailings disposal of less than US$0.36 per ton.This paper outlines the site characteristics and the tailings material properties and their influence on the design. Extensive use was made of naturally occurring free draining materials as well as bentonite modified soil liners within the tailings basin, embankment and retention ponds. General construction procedures for the various components are described, as well as on-going construction requirements utilizing materials from the open pit. Finally, the over-all costs and unit costs for tailings disposal are presented."

"Kidd Creek Mines primarily employs sublevel blasthole stoping for underground mining operations. During pillar recovery in No.1 Mine and panel mining in No.2 Mine, the free standing fill exposures may reach a height of 100 m or more. Consequently, a competent consolidated rockfill has been required to fill the mined openings.Since 1976, a total of more than fifty stopes and pillars have been filled with over four million tonnes of backfill. Fill exposures, up to heights of 100 m, have stood up well after blasting adjacent to the backfill.The fill material consists of a graded aggregate, Portland cement and ground slag. Sand has been occasionally mixed in the fill material to serve as avoid filler. The aggregate is prepared in a fill crushing plant, transported underground through raises, and hauled to the filling stopes by conveyors in No. 1 Mine and by trucks in No.2 Mine.Two mixing methods are currently in use. No. I Mine utilizes the free fall of gravity; the fill materials are sprayed with cement slurry as the aggregate departs from the conveyor into a mixing culvert. The other is the use of a rotary mixer on a batch basis in No. 2 Mine.This paper describes the fill systems, filling operation s, and the backfill quality control practice, together with various testing results related to improving fill quality as well as reducing fill costs.IntroductionThe Kidd Creek minesite, located 27 km north o f the city centre of Timmins, Ontario, produces 4.5 million tonnes of copper, zinc, lead, and silver ores annually from its No. 1 and No.2 underground mining operations. ABSTRACT: Ultra-class haul trucks operating in oil sand face operational and maintenance issues as a result of soft underfoot conditions (Joseph, 2002). With exposure to frequent high g loading events, tire life is reduced due to sidewall belt fexure and frequent ground contact. Therefore, an improved under-standing of the interaction between tires and oil sand is needed. This paper examines the outcomes of a series of static and cyclic loading tests, performed using a scale tire on rigid, sand, and oil sand surfaces. Geometric predictions are made regarding the footprint area and vertical deformation of an ultra-classtire on similar surfaces.

"Energy consumption in stirred mills has been studied, in the last couple of decades, on a macro scale. Effective operation and meeting particle size required for downstream operations used to be the main objectives behind energy utilization of stirred mills. In this paper, three energy terms are defined to assist in understanding the breakage mechanism for various types of minerals versus mill operation. The types of minerals studied had diverse physical and mechanical properties that are summarized as specific gravity, hardness and crystal structure. The minerals utilized in this study were quartz and galena. The effect of quartz and galena mix has been addressed as well as Lead-Zinc ore sample from SAG mill discharge. The energy input to the mill is function of the agitator speed, therefore three agitator speeds were evaluated, 1000, 1500 and 2000 RPM, respectively. The energy terms studied are specific energy (kWhr/ton). Effective energy is the ratio between net energy and total energy consumed by the mill. Last type of energy is the specific breakage energy, which is the net energy consumed by the mill per one-micron breakage. Results showed that specific energy and specific breakage rate are functions of mineral type, while effective energy is only function of mill input power (agitator speed).INTRODUCTIONGrinding is the largest energy consuming component of a mineral processing operation and typically consumes about 50% of the total energy used at a mining operation (Botin, 2009). Over the last two decades, stirred mills have been extensively utilized in mineral processing operations due to increased mineralogical complexity of ore bodies. Stirred mills grind particles to less than 10 µm by applying a high power intensity. The technology has been the focus of several research studies to investigate mill energy and grinding mechanisms. Becker, et. al. (2001) studied the relationship between different types of energy including input energy, specific energy, volume/mass specific energies, to stress intensity and final product particle size. Other studies such as by Kwade (1999), Kwade and Schwedes (2002), Blecher et al (1996), Partyka and Yan (2007), Stender et al (2004), focused on mill design and/or stress intensity distribution. Peukert (2004) studied the effect of mechanical properties of the grinding media and ground material on the comminution process."

Anglo American has used the extractant M 5640 in all the Divisions, which is an aldoxime modified with TXIB formulation, except in Los Bronces, where an aldoxime modified with tridecanol (TDA) formulation is used. It is a well-known fact that the aldoxime degrades while the modifier does not. With time the aldoxime/modifier ratio decreases significantly depending on the operating conditions of each plant. In order to evaluate the effect of this increasing modifier content in the organic of the plant, especially in the organic losses, a complete metallurgical test work program was started at laboratory and pilot plant scale. Results showed that the addition of aldoxime without modifier does not affect the chemical performance of the organic phase, but there is a significant decrease in the viscosity and density of the organic phase. Based on the results obtained in the metallurgical program, it was decided to run plant scale tests at both SX plants, Mantos Blancos and Mantoverde. In these tests, instead of adding the usual formulation of aldoxime modified with TXIB to maintain the organic inventory, CuPRO MEX™ 3406 which is an aldoxime without modifier is going to be added until the original aldoxime/modifier ratio is reached. The plant tests started in April 2013 at Mantos Blancos and in June 2013 at Mantoverde and will last 18 months. The results obtained at the laboratory and pilot plant scale, together with the preliminary plant test results, are discussed in this paper.

ABSTRACT The effect of a low4emperature stress relief at 232.2°C. (450°?F.) on the fatigue properties of shot-peened SAE. 1080 steel has been investigated. Specimens of the steel were first annealed. One half of the steel bars were then normalized and the other half were water-quenched and drawn. Specimens of the steel with each heat treatment were tested in tensile, notched bar impact, and fatigue. The fatigue specimens were test in air and water in R. R. Moore high-speed rotating bending machines in the following conditions: un-peened, peened, and peened-and stress-relieved at 232.2°C. ( 450°F.) The &apos;endurance life&apos; and fatigue properties of specimens given a stress relief heat treatment after shot peening were superior to those of specimens given a smooth machine finish or shot peened. INTRODUCTION THIS investigation was initiated to obtain preliminary information on the effect on the fatigue resistance of shot peening the machined surface of a high-carbon steel similar in composition to that used in hollow drill steel. The data obtained in this investigation could be applied in analysing the application of shot peening hollow drill steel shanks. It is well known that the &apos;endurance life&apos; and fatigue limits of steel are greatly ?improved by shot peening. References to this in the literature are numerous.

"THE NOR-ACME gold mine is located close to the north shore of Snow Lake, at 54°53' north latitude and 100°03' west longitude. It is about 75 air miles east of Flin Flon, and 36 miles by road from Wekusko at Mile 81 from The Pas on the Hudson Bay Railway.The claims which contain the Nor-Acme orebodies were staked in 1927 by C. R. Parres, who, with his sons, held the ground until 1938 when Nor-Acme Mines Limited was incorporated. In 194 l, on the recommendation of F. Ebbutt (1), this property was optioned by the Howe Sound Exploration Company, Ltd. A program of 50,000 feet of diamond drilling resulted in the outlining of two orebodies containing an estimated 5,000,000 tons with an average grade of 0.15 ounces per ton to a depth of 1,000 feet.A period of inactivity during the war years was followed by the construction of a mining plant capable of treating 2,000 tons of ore per day. Milling started in March 1949, and to the end of 1954 has resulted in the production of 383,793 ounces of gold and 32,906 ounces of silver from 3,331,403 tons of ore.General GeologyThe general geology of the Snow Lake area is described by J. M. Harrison (2), and will not be discussed here except insofar as it affects the Nor-Acme orebodies. The orebodies occur in rocks of Precambrian age that have been classified by Harrison as the Snow group, comprising meta-morphosed sediments interbedded with acid and basic volcanic rocks. The volcanic rocks include pyroclastic types which are unique in the region, a fact which led to their classification in the Snow group rather than the more widespread Missi group that generally occupies the same stratigraphic position above the Amisk group (Figure 1)."

"Cable TV networks are extensively used throughout Canada for TV signal distribution. Mobile/portable radio communications are also used extensively throughout all sectors of industry. There are numerous manufacturer supplying these industries with a wide variety of equipment and accessories.IAL&apos;s underground radio communications system combines the techniques of cable TV and mobile radio to produce a flexible communications system with most of the advantages of both systems. Standard off-the-shelf mobile, portable, base-station and repeater equipment can be used. The equipment may need modification to be customized to particular end user requirements, but does not require a complete new unit redesign. Likewise, the cable TV distribution equipment is off the-shelf, with some items requiring modification for underground system application.Radio communications can be provided wherever the cable system is extended. Where traffic or type of activity warrants it, multiple radio channels can be provided on the same cable. Certain radio channels could also be used with data channels for control or supervision of remote equipment or environmental conditions. In addition, the same cable can be used to distribute or monitor signals from remote TV cameras in selected or dangerous areas. The system can be interfaced to a telephone system, if required, to provide extended communications to above-ground workshops, offices, medical stations or even hospitals and other emergency services.IntroductionReliable communications among personnel throughout an underground mine area have long been the dream and goal of various mine operations personnel. The Eastern Townships and Asbestos Hill areas are the current asbestos-producing districts of Quebec. Mining in the two areas began in the /are 1870s and 1972 respectively. Production from the Eastern Townships is derived from rhe Serpentine Zone of ulrramafic rocks, specifically from basal serpentinized peridotite members of what are now considered to be allochrhonous ophiolitic material that was abducted onto the Early Ordovician continental margin. From south west to northeast, the rhree allochthonous asbestos-producing sections of the Serpentine Zone are designated the Asbestos Ophiolite Complex, the Thetford Mines Ophiolite Complex and the Pennington Dyke; the Pennington Dyke is considered to represent a segment of serpentinized Alpine peridotire that was fragmenred from a larger, more complete ophiolire complex. The Asbesros Hill deposir on the Ungava Peninsula lies in what apparenrly is an inrrusive sill found wirhin rhe Chukorar Group, the uppermosr group of Precambrian-aged Cape SmithWakeham Bay Belr of volcanic-sedimentary rocks.

"The centrifugal slurry pumps feeding cyclones are critical components used in the grinding process. It is well known that for this type of pumps the performance degradation is very intense. To minimize downtime a complete stand-by slurry pump is always installed in a parallel circuit. The replacement decision of slurry pumps is sometimes set on specific periods of time that are empirically determined, based on previous experience; unless a pump failure triggers the second (standby) pump. Given the significant energy costs in the grinding process and a desire to increase competitiveness, engineers and scientists started research in this field while manufacturers also took actions in order to improve pumps reliability and performance. The lack of standardization regarding the methods used to benchmark and evaluate the energy performances of cyclone slurry pump systems in the mining industry makes it difficult for an enterprise to take informed decisions concerning the replacement or optimization of its process based on energy benchmarking of such slurry pump systems. This paper proposes a new methodology of benchmarking slurry pump performances using a new concept of Benchmark Energy factor (BEF) based on Mathematical Model Benchmarking. The concept of BEF has been proven successful in other industries. A new standard addressing the guidelines for benchmarking the energy performance of slurry pumps for cyclones was proposed within the Canadian Standards Association. This standard will provide a unified and consistent methodology for performing measurement activities with the ability to measure and verify the system energy performance in the field through the BEF approach. Practical examples based on the new concept are presented with comments."

Chemical reduction of selenate by chromous ions is proposed as a novel method to remove selenate from sulfate-bearing solutions Chromous ions were generated by electrochemical reduction of chromic ions using an electrochemical cell. The investigation was conducted in sulfate medium and under various concentrations of chromous ions (0.0062 to 0.05M), pH 1 to 2.2 and temperature 10 to 60°C. Selenate ions were rapidly reduced by chromous ions to hydrogen selenide. The overall reaction at a chromous/selenate molar ratio of 8 or higher can be expressed by the following reaction. At an initial chromous/selenate molar ratio below 8, the products are hydrogen selenide and elemental selenium. At a lower chromous/selenate molar ratio and pH, more elemental selenium and less hydrogen selenide are produced. The reduction kinetics is controlled by both chromous ion and hydrogen ions concentrations. The reaction rate is first order with respect to selenate, hydrogen ion and chromous ion concentrations. It was found that the selenate reduction rate with chromous is independent of the concentration of sulfate present in the solution. The general rate equation was proposed and the rate constant was calculated as k= 0.38 M-2s-1. An activation energy of 58.7 kJ/mol was obtained in the temperature range from 10 to 50°C. Nearly 100% of selenate can be reduced to H2Se from solution containing 17 ppm selenate in less than 30 minutes at pH 2.2 and 60°C. Various strategies have been tested to remove the produced H2Se from solution. INTRODUCTION Selenium in nature is mostly associated with metal sulfide minerals such as copper, iron, zinc, and lead sulfides (Zingaro & Cooper, 1974). The extraction of metals from ores has the potential for selenium contamination of ground and surface water which can pose an environmental and health concern. Therefore, selenium contamination in the receiving environment is a key issue for many industries (specifically copper industry) and the treatment of wastewater contaminated with selenium is a growing challenge. The effective removal of selenium from contaminated water is very important to support sustainability in the copper industry and the other industries with selenium pollution issues.

THE property of Buffalo Ankerite Gold Mines, Limited, is in Delora township, Porcupine area, Ontario. The southwestern part of the property is ground formerly owned by Marbuan Gold Mines, Limited, which was acquired by Buffalo Ankerite in January, 1936. Until 1938, the Ankerite (or North) mine and the Marbuan (or South) mine continued as separate operations, each developed through a surface shaft and winze to the 1050 level and each having its own mill. This meant high hoisting costs, which, in 1936 and 1937, amounted to 36 cents per ton. In 1938, the underground workings of the two mines were connected on the 1050 level, and ore from both mines was hoisted at the main, or No. 2, shaft of the North mine, location of which is shown in Figure l. This shaft was discontinued at a depth of 1150 feet because, owing to the soft nature of the talc (serpentine) rock in which it was sunk, it had to be concreted throughout, and also because of its great distance--1,100 feet and 1,400 feet, respectively-from the North and South orebodies.

"The technological development observed in recent years has stimulated the application of rare earth (RE) elements. Amongst their various applications it is well worth mentioning their use in electronics, superconductors, nuclear medicine, as well as in special inks - as those used in radar invisible airplanes. TV and computer monitor screens present as coating a powder containing some rare earth elements, mainly Europium and Yttrium. The recovery of the RE elements from electronic scrap is extremely important as the economic and environmental issues are concerned. This paper describes the study of the Eu and Y recovery from e-scraps. The first step of the process was the leaching of the powder obtained by manually scraping the inside surface of the screen. After the optimization of the leaching, the dissolution of Eu and Y was higher than 98 w/t% and a pregnant sulfuric liquor containing 11.9 g L-1 Y and 0.72 g L-1 Eu was obtained. The second step was the separation of the metals found in the liquor by the solvent extraction technique. The separation of Eu and Y was carried out in a counter current circuit compound of 3 extraction stages, 7 scrubbing stages and 15 stripping stages. DEHPA was used as the extractant, whereas a diluted sulfuric acid solution was applied as scrubbing agent and a hydrochloric acid solution at high concentration was used as the stripping agent.INTRODUCTIONThe rare earths (RE) are a moderately abundant group of 17 elements composed of lanthanides, scandium and yttrium. Amongst the RE, promethium (Pm) is extremely rare, however several of the RE elements are not very rare and occur dispersed in a variety of forms (Greenwood & Earnshaw, 1984; Tyler, 2004).The innumerable applications of the RE elements are based on their particular properties, mainly their spectroscopic and magnetic properties (Martins & Isolani, 2005). The technological development observed in recent years has stimulated the application of rare earth (RE) elements. They have been used in agriculture, electronics, superconductors, nuclear medicine, automobile industry, special inks – as those used in radar invisible airplanes, X-ray screens, high intensity mercury vapour light bulbs, neutron scintilators, charged-particle detectors and optical memory reading systems (Maestro & Huguenin, 1995; Nagaosa & Binghua, 1997; Sánchez et al., 1999)."

"Sensor-based ore sorting is on its way to establish as a standard option for physical separation. The increasing number of installations in coal, iron ore, industrial minerals and hard-rock metal mining segments underlines the technological and financial potential that is beginning to be untapped. The Ma’aden Phosphate installation with 1.650 t/h sensor-based ore sorter feed sets a new benchmark for the possible capacity of stationary installations. Besides stationary installations, including multiple sorters parallel in different size ranges and multiple stages, containerised semi-mobile plants are applied. These offer two advantages, first being the reduction of transport costs when applied close to the mining face. The second is that semi-mobile systems enable processing of tens of thousands of tonnes of ore in a piloting phase with an approximate duration of 0.5 to six months, verifying the results laboratory mini-bulk tests on 5–10 tonnes of sample. This is especially important for low-grade metal ores because of the inherent Fundamental Sampling Error, as well as the Grouping and Segregation Error. The paper elaborates the results achieved within the I2MINE project, treating polymetallic ore at the Boliden Concentrator in Sweden.INTRODUCTIONSensor-based ore sorting (SBS) is becoming a standard option for physical separation, applied in all segments of mineral production. Especially for low-grade hard rock metal ores, an interdisciplinary approach is necessary applying experts for all aspects of mineral production. Due to the impact on the whole process stream, it is important on the end user side to have high level managerial support and involve all disciplines to ensure that all stake holders are involved in the analysis."

The Dome Mine has been in production for nearly 100 years and throughout the years many different mining methods were used to extract the ore. An exploration program late in the 1990s outlines new resources requiring the mine to extract the rock and some previously placed backfill (alluvial sand and/or classified tailings). It is therefore imperative to separate the backfill from the rock to reduce the negative impacts of handling the backfill on the ore pass, crushers and mill processes. Separating the backfill from the ore at the source would also reduce and/or eliminate the cost of handling this waste stream. The paper will touch on the backfill removal criteria, the risks, the alternatives and the selected method, screen decks, for backfill removal at the Dome Mine. The 155549 bulk zone case study will illustrate how the screen decks are in use at the mine. The paper will also illustrate how the lessons learned and conclusions of the work done for the 155549 bulk zone were applied to the second screen deck installation for the 257260 bulk zone.

"This paper reviews the development of new designs in extensible and high angle conveyor systems. These aim to overcome the limitations of prior alternative concepts in design. The application of such systems in strip, terrace, open pit and mountain mining is reviewed. IntroductionTruck haulage costs have tended to escalate in recent years. This has been primarily due to operations generally moving to greater depths with associated increases in haul distances . Periods of high inflation rates have also been experienced for diesel fuel oil, tires and other petroleum based products. Recent international political events have tended to regenerate concerns over future oil supply and price stability. For such reasons, conveyor based transport is becoming increasingly attractive. Truck haulage maintains an inherent flexibility and improvements continue to be made in performance and capacity. Doubts must exist, however, over the extent to which further economies of scale may be made. Conversely, belt conveyor systems do not suffer this constraint and have the following advantages:• Electrical power is used and the specific energy consumption is at least half that required for truck haulage.• Operating costs and skilled labour requirements are lower.• Equipment has superior longevity and is ""inflation proof"" .• Access roads can be steeper and narrower in most mine environments, reducing construction and maintenance costs.• They are less prone to breakdown and bad weather delays .• In long haul, high capacity operations conveyors can save substantially on capital cost.• Environmental impact is improved with reduced noise level, dust and atmospheric pollution. Although conveyor systems are less flexible in operation than truck haulage and although a breakdown in any part of the system can immobilize the total system, mechanical availabilities of + 80% are constantly reported by large operators. There would appear in the past to have been some prejudice against conveyor systems in hard rock mines due to lack of experience. Apparent reservations would apply equally 10 underground coal mines, yet practically all of these mines (and some underground hard rock mines) find conveyor systems more economical than other transport systems."
