Although Canadian bentonite is competitive in quality for most uses, it has not been accepted for the pelletizing of iron ore concentrates. In 1962, Canada consumed about 10,000 tons of imported bentonite for this use. By the end of 1965, the planned domestic consumption for this purpose alone will probably be more than 100,000 tons a year, valued at about $3 million. Consequently, a challenge exists for the establishment of a Canadian source of high-quality bentonite for pelletizing. Such a bentonite would also be suitable for the two other major applications -well drilling and foundry use. Brief mention is made of such topics as the identification, 1noperties, occurrences, exploration, applications, technology and laboratory testing of this clay. In particular, the type of bentonite in demand, the geological horizons warranting exploration, and simple preliminary test methods are discussed.

Introduction During the month of September, 1928 enough money had. been promised by private individuals and corporations to comply with the Research ?Foundation Act 1928 (Chapter 57, 18 George V) of the Province of Ontario. The Ontario Research Foundation (referred to below as O.R.F.) may be said to 1iave come into being at that time. Under the terms of this Act, the Treasurer of the Province was empowered to match dollar for dollar of the sums subscribed by private .corporations and individuals up to a limit of $1,000,000. However, the response to the appeal for this by the Premier of the Province, the Honourable Mr. G. Howard Ferg uson, was so exceptional that the Act was amended in 1929 so as to empower the Treasurer to increase the maximum contribution on the part of the Province to $2,500,000. In March, 1933, the Chairman of the Foundation, Sir Joseph Flaville, Bart., was able to report that, in the interval between the Premier's appeal and December 1st, 1932, private enterprise had paid ?into the treasury of the Foundation $1,670,050, and that the Provincial Treasurer had assumed responsibility for a like sum. The endownment Fund of the Foundation was, therefore. $3,340,100. This sum was ?invested a lm~ s t entirely in Government securities, in securities guar. anteed by the Government, and in 1mmicipal securities. Sir Joseph Flavelle remarked at that time that "The payment of $1,670,050 to the Endowment of the Foundation by private persons and corporations is a somewhat remarkable performance when it is remembered that for three of the five years the business of the country has been suffering from a severe depression". Since that time it has been the consistent policy of O.R.F. to live within the income derived (1) from the investment of its Endowment Fund and (2) from fees collected for services rendered.

The high pressure acid leaching of laterite was modelled and simulated using a combination of two commercially available software packages, namely Aspen Plus 11.1 and the OLI Stream Analyzer. New kinetic parameters for the acid-controlled metal dissolution and precipitation reactions at temperature were first determined from previous experimental data on the leaching of limonite. A grain model with cylindrical pellets was used to model the solid-liquid dissolution reactions. Precipitation reactions were modeled via aqueous equilibrium chemistry. A dedicated thermodynamic database previously developed at the University of Toronto was used in conjunction with the OLI software to model the solution chemistry and calculate the concentration of hydrogen ions in solution at the leaching temperature. Mass balances were handled by Aspen Plus. The simulation gave good predictions of nickel dissolution under industrial and laboratory conditions, for the dissolution of limonite and limonite/saprolite blends. Computational

Since milling began in 1909, the PJV Dome mill has been expanded several times, to the current throughput of 11,500 tonnes per day. PJV recovers free gold using crushing and grinding followed by gravity concentration. The remaining gold in the gravity tails is recovered by cyanide leaching followed by Carbon-In -Pulp processing. Prior to 1993, cyanide tailings were impounded in the tailings pond where cyanide was allowed to degrade naturally. Effluent was discharged seasonally during the summer and early autumn to maintain the water balance. In 1993, an Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) was designed and constructed for the purpose of removing dissolved metals and suspended solids. In 1997, an INCO SO2/Air cyanide destruction process was added to the ETP. Even though the ETP was successful in meeting the cyanide, metals and total suspended solids (TSS) discharge limits, often the treated effluent failed to pass toxicity tests. Following successful laboratory and plant scale testing, the addition of the chelant EDTA (ethylene diamine-tetra-acetic-acid) was commenced in the 1999 operating season. To date, discharged effluent has passed all toxicity tests. This paper describes the evolution of the ETP from its early conception to the various phases of upgrade needed to meet the MISA discharge limits.

This paper explores the interpretation and application of Particle Size Distribution (PSD) curves in optimizing blast design and enhancing downstream operations. The study looks at important factors like D50, D80, fines content, and the uniformity index to show how PSD curves affect the efficiency of different mining processes. The first section of this paper discusses the impact of blast design parameters such as burden, spacing, and explosive energy on the resulting PSD, highlighting their significance for downstream operations like crushing, and material handling. The section concluded that proper alignment of PSD with downstream size classes, like primary crusher inlet sizes, among others, can result in substantial cost reductions and productivity gains. The second part presents a case study from dstgroup aggregate quarry in northern Portugal, utilizing fragmentation analysis to evaluate blast performance and promote continuous improvement. The section specifically examines the effect of stemming material size on blast fragmentation, comparing the impact of using aggregate with a D80 of 12.32 mm versus a D80 of 21.94 mm. The D80 value represents the particle size at which 80% of the stemming material is smaller, making it a critical parameter in evaluating the stemming's effectiveness in confining explosive energy. The drilling and blasting designs were meticulously planned using O-PitDev and O-PitSurface software to ensure accuracy in blast parameters and layout. To assess the fragmentation resulting from these different stemming material sizes, the study utilized WipFrag 4 software. The software allowed for precise measurement of particle size distribution after the blast, as well as a detailed comparison between the two stemming sizes. Results from the analysis indicate that using bigger-sized stemming material led to improved blast confinement, which in turn resulted in better fragmentation compared to the smaller-sized material. The reviewed blast videos demonstrate that the larger aggregate effectively contained the explosive energy within the borehole, thereby reducing premature venting and directing more energy towards breaking the surrounding rock mass. This led to finer fragmentation with D80 = 1240.1 mm, D50 = 685.9, and Dmax = 2580 mm, which is advantageous in downstream operations like crushing and milling. On the other hand, the smaller stemming material (D80 = 21.94 mm) did not confine the explosive energy as efficiently, resulting in coarser fragmentation (D80 = 1327.37 mm, D50 = 750.76, and Dmax = 2370 mm) and reduced overall blast efficiency. These findings highlight the significant influence of stemming material size on blast performance and fragmentation outcomes.

United States contacts have supplied information about that country.Zambia's political unrest and severe devaluation, combined with developments in Namibia and South Africa, enhanced staff recruiting problems in the School of Mines. Zimbabwe has a strong and developing mining department. The departments of mining in the United States and Great Britain are readjusting and contracting due to the reduction in the scale of the industry.The above factors are reviewed and their impact on the countries evaluated.IntroductionCanada trains the majority of its mining engineers domestically but a significant number are recruited from other countries. Examination of the qualifications of 200 professional engineers registered in the mining discipline in British Columbia showed that125 received their first degree from a Canadian university, 33 graduated from institutions in the United States and 42 from the rest of the world including 30 from the United Kingdom. This is a rough and-ready sample but it indicates that developments in the education of mining engineers in the United States and in Britain are relevant to the Canadian mining industry.The recent changes in the world economy and political structure have significant implications for the mining industry and for the supply and training of engineers. Change in eastern Europe coupled with the downturn in mining, especially in the European coalfields, has enabled many engineers to travel freely to the West. The low gold price and the legislative changes in Africa that have improved access to education for Africans with the ability to fill responsible positions, have reduced the South African mining industry’s overseas recruitment to a minimal level. The Australian recession has also lowered their recruitment of mining engineers from other countries."

"The Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC) is a federal Crown corporation which operates two coal mines (Phalen and Prince Collieries), a coal preparation plant, a railway, a central workshop and a deep water shipping facility.The Sydney coal field consists of 11 major seams, which range from 0.8 m to over 3.7 m in thickness. Of the 2.4 billion tonnes of known coal resources in the field, approximately 550 million tonnes can be mined with present mining technology. These parameters define reserves which extend more than 8 km beneath the ocean to a depth of 1200 m. With today’s design and present high production faces, the colliery life is projected at approximately 20 years."

More than half of the primary neodymium, produced directly from ores, is being used to manufacture neo magnets. Neodymium, being a critical element in supply, has attracted considerable interest worldwide to recover this metal from a variety of waste streams. From among different recycling processes, hydriding-dehydriding can prove to be highly effective in recycling discarded neo magnets present in consumer electronics. In the present study, manually removed magnets from discarded Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) were subjected to the hydriding-dehydriding process in order to evaluate the resultant products for the re-fabrication of the magnets. The paper describes the effect of experimental parameters on both the hydriding and dehydriding processes as applied to different magnet chemistries.

"The Mineral Research Centre of the Quebec Department of Energy and Resources has worked extensively on the development of a dry process to extract pure mica flakes from a phlogopite ore. The liberation of mica from the gangue is effected basically by impact crushing, and the ground ore is screened into several fractions, each having a fairly narrow range of grain size. Each sized fraction is then fed to an air separator where heavy grains are separated from light flaky grains. Heavy fractions are returned to hammer mills where gangue minerals are ground finer and blocky mica particles are exfoliated. A second stage of screening is performed and each fraction is sent to an air separator. This sequence is repeated until mica products are virtually free of gangue. These different fractions are then treated in a cage mill in which mica flakes undergo a more orderly exfoliation along cleavage planes. The ground mica is again submitted to a final screening stage, after which each fraction constitutes a final commercial product.This process permits the recovery of about 70% of the mica contained in the ore. The over-all process will be described along with technical details of each unit operation. Recent work on a wet grinding method to produce very fine mica will also be discussed.IntroductionRecords of production of mica in Quebec date back to 1886. Production has been more or less continuous since that time, with peak activity during the war years. Production was interrupted in 1966, but started again in 1972 when Marietta Resources and Laviolette Mining and Metallurgical Corporation started their joint operation in Canton Suzor, northwestern Quebec. Mica deposits of more or less importance exist in different parts of Quebec, of which three have attracted attention in recent years: the Canton Suzor deposit, the Canton Lamy deposit and the Canton Chasseur deposit. The Suzor orebody was first identified by Carl Faesler in 1936, who described the rock as ""brown biotite in flakes half an inch in diameter, with interstitial augite, apatite and feldspar""."

Of the twelve known ore zones on the Sunro property, acquired by Cowichan Copper Co., only the "B" and "C" orebodies of the "River Zone" had been explored sufficiently to indicate the grade and tonnage. The "B" zone was selected for initial production. The portion of this orebody above the main adit level was developed for horizontal-ring, longhole mining. Ore from the stope would be scraped directly to the coarse ore bin. The lack of a suitable mill site on surface, as well as the 8,000-ft. tramming distance, led naturally to the installation ground. I N November, 1960, a lease was obtained by Co-wichan Copper Co. Ltd. (N.P.L.) from Sunro Mines Ltd., covering the main ore (River) zone of the Sunro property. A total of twelve zones had been located on the property. Nine of these lay within the leased area. Cell rooms of aluminium smelters have large openings in the sidewalls and in the roof. These openings provide a high ventilation rate, which removes heat and contaminants emitted by the reduction cells and thereby ensures acceptable working conditions inside the cell room. However the large openings make the airflows through the smelter building sensitive to the wind. In this study equations for the airflow through the openings of a smelter building exposed to crosswinds were developed and verified against plant measurements. The equations were then used to estimate the airflows through a two-storeyed smelter building containing VS Soderberg cells. Wind protection by wind-covers over the sidewall openings and by upwind buildings made the airflows through the building less sensitive to the wind. Physical and mathematical modelling showed that working conditions inside the wind-protected cell room would be acceptable for crosswinds at speeds up to 16 km/h. These predictions were confirmed by measurements taken in a VS Soderberg smelter.

"On the da y shift in Number One Mine at Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, on May 3, 1887, William Griffiths, a coal miner with many years experience, fired a shot to advance the face of the crosscut. A flame ran out for a distance of fifteen feet along the roof and then extended up the slope for ten to twelve feet, and although many would have called this a blowing out shot, Griffiths said it was just a feeder. ""A blower"", he said, ""would have caused an explosion."" 1There was no explosion. Griffiths reported gas and the area was cleared for three hours and then work resumed. When the shift changed at 3:00 p.m., the fireman reported all places clear of gas and the ventilation good.2The ventilation in Number One Mine was the best anyone had ever seen. The air in the mine was almost too cold. The current was so strong that it sometimes blew out the flame on the miners' fish oil lamps. It delivered five to six hundred cubic feet of air for every man and animal working in the mine. The law required only one hundred cubic feet 3The miners considered Number One to be relatively safe. The manager was proud of the mine and its up-to-date equipment"". Recently, there had been reports from France and America about the explosiveness of coal dust, but the manager did not think his mine was sufficiently dusty to be dangerous.5 The dust lay thick on the floor of the mine. Sometimes when a shot was fired the dust rose in great clouds. When a miner was shovelling it, the dust would billow up and be carried off by the current of air. The dust was also in the roof and in the stopings, put there intentionally to fill up the spaces and prevent the accumulation of methane gas."

Together with Quebec and fifteen nearby U.S. states, an industrial base of more than half the total for both countries is provided by a population of 100 million.Mineral fillers such as barite, calcium carbonate, kaolin, mica, silica and talc are of major importance in the manufacture of paper, paint, plastics, rubber, vinyl tile, carpet backing, putty, caulks, sealants and adhesives. Ontario has all of these minerals, but domestic production falls short of demand in some cases, and mica and kaolin are not produced at all.This paper reviews the market and outlines the distribution of the major filler-consuming plants of northeastern North America. It also identifies the principal producers of filler minerals in the United States and Canada.IntroductionOf all the uses for industrial minerals, mineral fillers are probably the least understood. Originally used primarily to add low-cost bulk to a variety of commodities without seriously affecting their properties, filler minerals have become essential components that enhance and extend the properties of their hosts. Hence the term ""extender"" which, for all practical purposes, is synonymous with ""filler"". Today, fillers and extenders are not solely low-cost additives, but ingredients that provide essential characteristics to the products they fill.The major markets for mineral fillers are paint, paper, plastics, rubber, adhesives and floor coverings. But there are many others: putty, pesticides, wire and cable coatings, caulking and asphaltic compounds, oilcloth, wall-paper, joint cements, inks, sealants and many others. Barite, calcium carbonate, kaolin, mica, silica and talc are among the more important filler minerals discussed in this paper, but there are at least a dozen others. And the increasing practice of coating the mineral surfaces with certain coupling agents or metal stearates is constantly expanding the range of characteristics and hence the marketing opportunities.Whiteness, particle shape, fineness of grind and cost are the principal considerations in selecting a filler, but other characteristics such as weight, opacity, hardness and chemical inertness may be dominant considerations in specific applications."

This paper offers a brief review of current literature pertaining to vacuum degassing or vacuum casting of steel as practiced in the U.S.A., Germany and the U.S.S.R. The advantages of vacuum degassing of large forging ingots, heavy section casting, for the conversion of rimming bessemer steels to killed steel and for the production of transformer steels are discussed. Operating pressures, reduction in gas contents and improvements in hydrogen segregation, steel cleanliness and mechanical properties, obtained with the various techniques, are described. The paper includes a description of an experimental vacuum stream-droplet degassing unit and some preliminary results obtained at the Physical Metallurgy Division Research Laboratories Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, Ottawa on laboratory steel melts. The bath smelting process is one of the key techniques applied in the current copper smelting production, which includes bottom-blown and side-blown furnaces differently from the direction of gas injection. Liquid matte and slag form the bath in the smelting furnace. To better understand the fluid dynamic of the bath and further optimise the operational efficiencies in the smelting furnace, physical simulation of the bath in the horizontal cylindrical reactor was investigated. The mixing behaviour and wave motion of the bath in the bottom-blown and side-blown furnaces have been studied systematically. The mixing time is reduced with increasing gas flowrate and height of the lower layer, while it increases significantly with increasing the height of the upper layer. The wave motion in the furnaces can be suppressed with the presence of the upper layer, but the bath with a lower density generates higher wave amplitude. Overall, in comparison to bottom-blown mixing, side-blown mixing shows better mixing efficiency and lower wave amplitude. In addition, the plume eye and splash phenomena occurred in the bottom-blown furnace have also been studied. INTRODUCTION The bath smelting process is one of the principal techniques used in the current copper making industry. The bath smelting techniques have some advantages of high smelting efficiencies, low capital costs, low energy consumptions and reduced dust generations. From the direction of gas injection, the bath smelting techniques can be classified into five general types: (1) top-submerged blown, e.g. Ausmelt and Isasmelt; (2) top-suspended blown, such as Mitsubishi smelting; (3) top direct-to-copper smelting, such as Outokumpu smelting; (4) submerged side-blown, such as Noranda and Teniente smelting; (5) bottom-blown, such as Dongying Fangyuan bottom-blown copper smelting furnace (Schlesinger et al., 2002; Zhao, Cui, & Wang, 2013; Perez-Tello et al., 2018). In many metallurgical processes involving bath smelting situations, the objectives of agitation are to accelerate the bath homogenization inside the bath which makes a significant contribution to process efficiency and product quality. Extensive mixing studies have been performed for ladle refining and tundish associated to steelmaking processes through water physical models. Mixing time is the parameter used to quantify the efficiency of mixing in the liquid bath and the first empirical equation predicting mixing time was proposed by Nakanishi, Fujii and Szekely (1975). Later on, more systematic studies have been carried out on ladle mixing and researchers realized that the geometry of the vessel could also have a significant impact on mixing (Khajaviand & Barati, 2010). However, the investigations using ladles which are vertical cylindrical vessels, cannot be directly used in the study of mixing behaviour in horizontal cylindrical reactors. Understanding the fluid dynamics inside horizontal cylindrical bath smelter is useful from the industrial perspective. Recently fluid dynamics of horizontal cylindrical smelter related to copper smelting have been studied by the authors’ group (Shui et al., 2015a, 2015b, 2018a; 2018b; Xu et al., 2018, 2019).

WE were requested to make a digest of our original grinding report, Fine Grinding Investigations at Lake Shore Mines. This digest is much easier to read than the original report, but it lacks the experimental 'evidence' found in the first report which, in many cases, is much more interesting and educational than the conclusions derived from it. In the course of rewriting the paper, we noticed several new angles on the test data which had not occurred to us previously. From the data included in the report and other tests not published, calculations were made which indicated a line of new test work. These tests, among other things, more than suggest a technique for designing the length of mills, the position and number of classifiers, and the total loads a mill should carry.

"As part of a general review of processing double refractory ores through Barrick Gold’s autoclaves / CIL facility at Goldstrike, blanking the preg robbing native carbon in the process solids with hard (m.p. 55 - 60 º C) paraffin wax was studied, specifically in relation to pressure oxidation. The improvement in CIL gold extraction was found to depend on the wax addition point, with hot, dry contacting of the ore in the presence of wax - prior to POX - yielding the largest, most consistent improvement in gold extraction.INTRODUCTIONDouble refractory gold ores present two barriers to gold extraction. The first is generally a physical barrier: the gold is encapsulated or dispersed in a matrix which is impervious to the gold lixiviant. In most cases, including Carlin Trend, NV, deposits, this involves a pyrite or arsenopyrite matrix, although minor gold may also be dispersed in competent silica (quartz) or iron oxides. Gold can be rendered accessible by oxidative destruction of such sulphide matrices. At Goldstrike this is practised by roasting and autoclave oxidation (Thomas, 1994). It is the latter route to which this paper refers.The second barrier refers to the actual gold recovery. Gold may be extracted from the pressure oxidized solids with cyanide, forming a gold cyanide complex. One characteristic of this complex is that it adsorbs on graphitic surfaces. This is taken advantage of on a large scale by gold millers, who use manmade activated, i.e., graphitized carbon particles to remove the gold from solution during leaching: the Carbon-In-Leach, or CIL process. The gold cyanide bearing carbon particles are larger than the ore solids and can be separately recovered by screening. Goldstrike uses the CIL technology to recover gold. The second barrier becomes problematic when the ore naturally contains graphitic orcarbonaceous material, hereafter referred to as native carbon (versus the man-made activated carbon). This material may also adsorb gold cyanide in competition with the activated carbon. Since the native carbon is ground with the ore it is much smaller than the activated carbon. Any competition between the two carbons may produce a loss of gold from the pregnant leach liquor to the process tailings. This phenomenon is called “preg robbing”. Goldstrike ores come from the Carlin trend, which is known for the occurrence of native carbon (Adams & Burger, 1998; Schmitz, Duyvesteyn, Johnson, Enloe & McMullen, 2001; Tretbar, 2004)."

Possibility to move human workers away from dangerous places ?enhanced safety and improved working environment; ? Increase of actual operational time: ? Less losses due to shift changes, regulatory breaks, blasting periods, ventilation after blasting, etc.; ? Possibility to work in extremely dangerous conditions where man-operated machine could not be used (for example: ST-14 loader in backfilling operations in the Kemimine, following roof collapse). Reduction of the production cost through: ? Lower maintenance cost (less damage due to operator?s mistakes and no machine abuse); ? Higher productivity and effectiveness of the equipment (less machines to meet production targets, less operators required, lesser maintenance cost...). ? Although personnel health and safety are key drivers behind autonomous operation of mobile equipment in U/G mines, with significant capital and operation costs one expects to achieve: ? Productivity higher, or at least equal to that offered by man-operated equipment and systems; ? Lower production cost. Therefore, high effectiveness of the autonomous equipment is crucial to succeed.
