This paper discusses the history and development of the system and the benefits that are being gained for Yabulu from Solar Drying. Following the end of mining of the local Greenvale and Brolga nickel deposits, QNI Yabulu Refinery is dependent upon imported ore from over 15 different mines in New Caledonia, Indonesia and the Philippines.

The following data are put together to assist those who are responsible for ordering stores for mines and works. When making out a list of mine stores for a new plant, one can hardly be expected to remember everything, still it is all the more important that articles should not be forgotten, should the mine be situated in an out of the way place, where the manager has to look several weeks ahead. A man who has been accustomed to buy stores on a small scale, from local merchants, where he could pick out personally what he wanted, may suddenly find himself in a place where he has to order wholesale quantities or make out store lists to send contractors for quotations. As it is of course cheaper to purchase stores by the hundredweight, coil, barrel, etc as the case may be, in which they are made up, than to break such a parcel, the way in which the materials are placed on the market is mentioned, so that those who don't know may take full advantage of wholesale terms. The most frequent sizes and brands employed in connection with Australian mining are also mentioned. It would be useless to enumerate all sizes made by the trade, as many would be of no value for our purpose; still I have put down what will serve as a reminder to the manager to mention what size he requires when giving an order, such as the diameter of dynamite cartridges a slight neglect of this sort has often caused serious delay. By mentioning certain brands I do not wish to recommend them in preference to others inadvertently omitted they are simply mentioned as some of those frequently met with.

During recent years there has been a marked increase in the use of explosives in Queensland coal mines. Delay detonators have been introduced and their use has extended with the wider application of mechanised methods of mining.The need for careful study of the characteristics of delay detonators is stressed so that the advantages of simultaneous firing, from the points of view of safety and efficiency, may be obtained. With their use new potential hazards are introduced. These hazardsare considered and means whereby the overall safety may be improved are discussed.The increase in the number of misfires since the introduction of delay detonators is shown and the examination of misfired detonators is described. Lessons to be learned! from these misfires are noted and details are given of the essential requirements for safe and efficient blasting using delay detonators.INTRonUCTIONOne of the aims of mechanization in coal mines is to reduce the physical effort applied to the winning of coal. Explosives play an important part in achieving this and, following the introduction of power borers for the drilling of shot-holes in Queensland coal mines, much of the arduous work associated with coal getting has been eased. During recent years there has been a marked increase in the consumption of explosives, as shown in Table 1, and it must be the aim of all to use these explosives safely and efficiently. That there are dangers associated with the use Of explosives cannot be denied. The shotfiring operation is fully covered by legislation and, being under the control of one man, shQuld be capable of being carried out with a high degree of safety. Hydrogen and carbon monoxide reduction data were obtained on pelletized materials of the type currently being prepared commercially in Australia.Pellets, approximately 1 cm diameter, made from Deepdale, Iron Prince, and Mt. Newman iron ore were reduced by hydrogen over the temperature range 500°-900°C and the reduced pellets were examined by thermogravimetric, microscopic, electron probe, and x-ray techniques. After an initial time delay it was found that up to 95 per cent reduction the data could be described by a porous model where gaseous diffusion through the solid is rate controlling. Independent measurements of effective diffusivity supported the values obtained from the reduction data. Above 95 per cent reduction the rate decreased markedly due to the formation of retained wustite or fayalite.Comparison with reduction by carbon monoxide over the temperature range 750°-900°C showed that the rate of reduction was approximately five times slower than for reduction by hydrogen.The rate of reduction was found to be a function of the initial properties of the pellets which may account for the widely conflicting results that have been obtained with previous investigations on porous pellets.

THE object of this paper is to review certain features in connection with the mining of narrow lodes, say up to 20 ft. or so wide. The types of ore-body to which it is intended to refer are those which occur. chiefly as fissure or shear-Iodes-that is, those lodes which are to be found in belts of country which have been subjected to dynamic stresses, resulting in the formation of cracks and fissures, into some of which has been concentrated sufficient metal-bearing material to form ores. Very frequently one of the walls of such a lode is found to be a fault, or plane of differential movement.The first point which comes up for consideration is the shaft and its position. From the information afforded by the prospecting which has been done on a lode relative to the dip, nature of country, &c., the position of the main hauling shaft can be determined. For purposes of general utility the hangingwall is generally chosen, if a vertical shaft, though, on account of freedom from creeps, the foot-wall would be safer. Vertical shafts are preferable to underlie shafts in many ways; but wherethe lode maintains a flat dip the cost of cross-cutting at the various levels becomes very heavy'. Where possible, linkage between quality development and control and service applicationhas been shown and explained. INTRODUCTIONThe refractory industry is no stranger to change. New processes and revision of old processes in other industries are the harbinger of new and revised products in refractories.Few of the changes are dramatic; generally they are evolutionary rather than revolutionary. New developments are additional to, and inclusive of, established practice.Therefore in this paper it is necessary to repeat much of what is already known in order to show the development taking place.FIRECLAY REFRACTORIESGeneral technology Fireclay refractories are the most common, the most varied and the most versatile of all refractories. Virtually any composition of silica and alumina up to the composition of kaolin is possible. For purposes of comparison they may be classified in the Continental fashion in accordance with chemical composition or in the American way according to "duty". That the two methods are equivalent is shown by an inspection of the alumina-silica diagram of Bbwen and Greig (1924). 'Fireclay refractories are composed of a glassy and a crystalline component derived from the chemical and physical nature of the raw materials used in their manufacture.

In previous papers (1, 2), the influence on the creep resistance of elements normally found in commercial lead has been recorded. The results in the present paper refer to the influence of calcium, an element which is not found naturally in lead, but which has been used commercially in the form of alloys. It was realised that calcium would act as a deoxidising agent for lead-and in fact it was with this feature in view that both calcium and magnesium were used as additions. Subsequent work (including the results given in the present paper) has tended to diminish the importance which at first seemed to be associated with the presence of oxygen in lead. The structure of the dilute calcium lead alloys has been worked out in detail (S) and the phase diagram shows the existence of limited solid solubility and a compound CaPbs.

The grade of ore at Marvel Loch mine is directly related to the presence or absence of shear zones and quartz-sulfide-rich hornblende (¦ diopside) veining within areas of plagioclase alteration. An experienced geologist can identify these features in hand specimen. Practical rules have been developed to assist this visual identification. The structural sites and styles of alteration and veining most conducive to gold mineralisation have also been determined. The work has enabled a better understanding of the geological controls on mineralisation at Marvel Loch, and has clarified geological understanding for optimisation of grade control modeling, ore block mark-ups, and minimisation of ore loss and dilution during excavation. In addition to this, it has enabled a detailed understanding of mine scale structural controls, geometry and relative grade relationships.

After completing a feasibility study in 1987, Niugini Mining Limited (NML) obtained five Gold Mining Leases within PA 632, covering the Mount Victor and Clarkes Ridge gold deposits. Reserves prior to mining were 260 000t at 3.63g/t Au for Mount Victor and 40 000t at 2.8g/t Au for Clarkes Ridge. Ore was mined from the two deposits by NML from November 1987 to January 1990. A total of 645kg of gold and 346kg of silver were produced from 198 000 tonnes of ore pro- cessed. Mining and milling operations ceased in February 1990. Since then, there has been significant progress in rehabilitating and revegetating the site. Plant and workshop facilities have been dismantled and removed from site, exposed parts of the pit have been landscaped and replanted, tailings water has been neutralised and discharged, and the dam filled. All remaining personnel and equipment left the site in November 1990. It is envisaged that the replanted areas will be rapidly revegetated, leaving little evidence of mining. Niugini Mining did not recoup the initial investment for Mount Victor, but the mine produced a positive cash flow and made a significant' financial contribution to the local communities and Papua New Guinea as a Whole.

BHP's two million tonne per annum nominal capacity Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) plant at Port Hedland in the Pilbara region of Western Australia is based on FINMET¦¦ direct reduction technology. The FINMET¦¦ process produces direct reduced iron (DRI) by reacting fine iron ore with reformed natural gas in a series of fluid bed reactors and then hot briquetting this DRI into dense, high quality iron briquettes. The Port Hedland HBI project represents a major investment in the chemical processing of Australian minerals to higher value products prior to export to Asian markets. This paper describes the FINMET" process and technical aspects of the high-quality HBI product, and provides an update of the current status of the project.

Unrelieved residual strains can influence the states of stress in rock masses. If cheap, stable structures are to be constructed in Tock in which large pressures are exterted by unrelieved residual strains, the pressures must be either utilized or neutralized. A photoelastic technique has been used to show that the release of residual strains in rocks is influenced by the mechanical properties of anisotropic rock fabrics. The relationships between directions of residual strain release and the attitudes of minor geological structures have been determined. For engineering design purposes it is possible to estimate the principal stress directions in rock containing unrelieved residual strains if the attitudes of such minor geological structures as foliation planes, lineations, and joints are known.INTRODUCTIONQuarry workers have long been aware that near-surface rocks may be highly stressed. In many cases the stresses are too large to be the result of gravitational loads. Dale (1923, pp. 34-35) gives many instances of deformation produced by the violent release of residual strains in quarry rocks. Coates (1963) has described powerful rock bursts and cases of rock deformation underground implying the existence of much larger stresses than are likely to result from present-day gravitational loads. The only explanation is that pressures of up to several thousands of pounds per square inch may be caused by unrelieved residual strains in rock.Instruments have been developed for measuring states of stress in rock masses. Operations of the new copper smelter at Mount Isa commenced on the 6th February, 1953. Prior to this date a paper by R. V. Anderson (1953) outlined the smelter layout, proposed operation and expected performance.Nominally a 50-ton per day plant, output is currently at the rate of 85 long tons per day. In the first 3t years, of operation to 30th June, 1956, '71,339 tons of blister copper were produced. Operation has been stabilized' and a number of modifications to plant and operation have been made. This paper reviews the progress made to date.GENERAL LAYOUT AND EQUIPMENTThe general layout and equipment follows well-established practice as study of Figs. 1 to 4, and Appendix II will show. This diagrammatic representation of layout (Fig. 1) and flow sheet (Fig. 2) is intended for the purpose of brevity to take the place of a detailed plant description.Choice of site for the smelter was limited by the necessity for close proximity of the waste heat boilers to the powerhouse.Much excavation was necessary before foundation work commenced, but the plant is compact and further expansion is possible.CHARGE MAKE-UPRoaster charge initially comprised concentrates, purchased ores, revert materials, mine sulphide ore and barren sand. As purchased ore receipts increased and as domestic black rock oxidized ore became available, the latter two fluxes were eliminated from the charge. Fluxes at minus i-in. sizing are trucked from crushing plant or stockpile by motor lorries. Filtered mill concentrates are dropped from an overhead conveyor on to the storage patio floor adj acent to the two concentrate bins.

Results of flotation tests on lead-zinc ore from Broken Hill, N.S.W., confirmed that flotation at pH 9 in the presence of cement gave poorer metallurgical results than flotation at pH 7. Additions of 2 kg/tonne wood raspings [e.g. blackbutt (Eucalyptus pilularis), blue gum (E. saligna), brushbox (Tristania conferta), or turpentine gum (Syncarpia laurifolia)l had little effect at pH 7 but greatly accentuated the deleterious effect of cement at pH 9. This was shown to be caused by e:xtractives (e.g. polyphenols and carbohydrate materials) derived from woods at pH 9. The proportion of extractives, as shown by DV absorbance spectra, increased with increase of pH and was affected by various salts.Additions of 1 kg/tonne Al2(S04)3.16H20 when cement or cement and wood were present showed that metallurgical results obtained by flotation were then very simHar to those in the absence of cement or wood or both. This was ascribed to lower pH values in the presence of aluminium sulphate and possibly to specific chemical effects.Additions of aluminium sulphate appear to offer an economic solution to the problem of treatment of ores contaminated with cemented fill at Broken Hill.

I would like to thank The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy for inviting us to share with you some of our experiences in the handling, storage, and transportation of industrial minerals in North America. Cometals, Inc. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Commercial Metals Company, headquartered in Dallas, a public corporation whose shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Sales exceed one billion dollars. Cometals, Inc. is located in New York and specializes in marketing of chemicals as well as raw materials used in the manufacture of steel, refractories, abrasives, glass and ceramics. This makes us one of the larger regular shippers of industrial minerals. Many people are aware that industrial minerals need to be viewed and judged on the merits of their chemical and physical characteristics. In addition you are surely aware that close attention must be paid to the economics of these minerals to determine the appropriate value and competitiveness of the minerals or products delivered at the doorsteps of the consuming work. You may, however, not be aware that the handling and transportation of the mineral is of crucial importance, in fact, the transportation and handling costs of industrial minerals frequently are a major component of the value of the ores marketed and, therefore, it is only natural that close attention should be paid to them. Many of the industrial minerals require special handling to assure that the material reaches the consumer without being contaminated and without getting wet. I invite you to accompany me through the various steps involved in "delivering the goods" to the consumer.

An examination is made of some of the consequences of a magmatic gas phase developed during a late stage of differentiation of an acidic magma. Elements possessing halides with high partial pressures (Sn, Mo, W) may be removed from the magma by distillation into gas bubbles in the manner suggested by Fenner (1933). The common chalcophile elements are not affected by this mechanism, but form sulphides which may become attached to rising gas bubbles by one of three distinct mechanisms. The gas bubbles may then carry the sulphides upwards and concentrate them in some favourable locus, giving rise to an ore-forming fluid. The process would operate selectively upon different sulphides and is capable of providing an explanation of the paragenetic succession observed in ore deposits as well as other important geological criteria of ore genesis.INTRODUCTIONThere is a widespread belief among contemporary geologists that a large and important class of ore deposits is genetically related in some way·to acidic igneous rocks. This class includes the tin-tungsten-molybdenum-bismuth type of mineralization as well as a variety of sulphide deposits.A basic problem confronting explanation of the genesis of these deposits is the manner in which trace elements which were originally widely dispersed in granitic magmas were segregated therefrom and concentrated into economic mineral deposits.The principles underlying the formation of one group of minerals deposits (pegmatites) related to granitic magmas ate reasonably well understood, largely due to the labours of Goldschmidt and his school. However, many geologists have noted that there appears to be some sort of fundamental discontinuity between pegmatite formation and the origin of the more common hypogene ores, particularly sulphides.Accordingly it has been suggested that these ores...

The Tolukuma gold-silver prospect is located approximately 100km N of Port Moresby in the Central Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG). Epithermal "adularia-sericite" style mineralisation crops out over 1200m within an en echelon quartz veined zone 1 to lOm wide. At a 4g/t cut-off grade, a geological resource of approximately 1.47Mt @ 13.77g/t Au is indicated from 38 diamond drill holes completed since discovery by Newmont Pty Ltd in September 1986. At a regional scale, Tolukuma miner- alisation appears localised in a dilatant zone at the intersection of a 1150 magnetic structure, and the western margin of a N-S trending graben which is filled by a Pliocene volcanic complex contemporaneous with the Mt Davidson Volcanics 30km to the W. A l0km diameter circular Landsat feature, which may reflect magma emplacement at depth, occurs immediately N of Tolukuma and nearby mineralisation. Mineralisation at Tolukuma occurs in sub-vertical quartz veins at, or adjacent to the faulted contact between Pliocene basic and intermediate volcanics/intrusives, and quartz mica schists and phyllites of the Cretaceous Kagi Metamorphics. Most veins display evidence of multiple episodes of brecciation and textures indicative of cyclic boiling, including crustiform rhythmic banding and quartz pseudomorphs after platy calcite.

"The large Yandi channel iron deposit (CID) is located in the north-west of Western Australia and is currently mined via open pit methods. Drilling at Yandi is widely spaced and current estimates are mostly linear averages of the surrounding local samples. Linear estimates such as ordinary kriging (OK) based on block sizes that are significantly smaller than the dimensions of the drilling grid are less variable than the unknown reality (Armstrong and Champigny, 1989).Conditional simulation (CS) provides a series of plausible realisations that represent the actual grade variability at a small scale (eg 1 m + 1 m + 1 m). These simulations are very useful for a number of purposes, eg: optimising grade control, stockpiling and blending selection of optimal drill hole spacing assessing resource risk on contained tonnage and metal.At Yandi the major constituents of the ore (Fe, P2O5, SiO2, Al2O3 and LOI) are correlated to varying degrees. Independent CS of each assay variable will not reproduce these correlations. Reproducing the correlations (and the shape of scatterplots) is important if the simulations are used for the abovementioned purposes. This paper examines and compares various methods of CS that aim to reproduce the correlations between the assay variables.The CS methods evaluated in this paper are conditional co-simulation (CCS) using the linear model of co-regionalisation and two other, alternative multivariate simulation methods, which use min/max autocorrelation factors (MAF) or the stepwise conditional transform (SCT) to de-correlate assay variables before performing independent CS. It was found that CCS best reproduced the characteristics (histograms, variogram, scatterplots, etc) of the declustered drill hole data (Figure 1). Whilst simulation using MAF generally produced acceptable results, the method did not adequately reproduce the variance of the assay variables. The univariate statistics, histograms and experimental variograms were acceptable for simulations generated from the SCT. Bivariate statistics, cross-variograms and scatterplot reproduction for the SCT were unacceptable. The latter method produced inferior results because there were insufficient samples to obtain a reliable transform of the third assay variable in the transformation sequence.None of the abovementioned simulation methods provides good reproduction of all the scatterplots. This is due to the presence of clay pods, which cause some scatterplots to display two trends. These clay pods contain higher percentages of SiO2 and Al2O3 than the surrounding CID. The clay pods are generally smaller than the drill-grid dimensions. Thus their locations are typically unknown and they cannot be defined by manual interpretation, eg via wireframes. The locations of the clay pods were simulated via indicator CS. CCS was then performed separately for the clay pods and the CID. This significantly improved the reproduction of the correlation coefficients, the scatterplots and visually the simulation was more geologically realistic. Simulating the location of clay pods followed by CCS of assay variables is the recommended approach for simulation at the Yandi CID.CITATION:De-Vitry, C, 2013. Cobalt/tungsten mineralization at Mt. Cobalt, located 170 km southeast of Mt. Isa in northwestern Queensland, is described. Mineralization occurs in the Kuridala Formation of the Mary Kathleen Group, which is composed dominantly of pelitic schists, carbonates and acid and basic volcanics.Rocks in the region are metamorphosed to amphibolite facies and affected by two generations of tight to isoclinal folds and a third, more open generation of folds. The region is divided into three meridionally trending belts on the basis of structural style, with mineralization concentrated in the central, more highly strained belt.Deformation and metamorphism is probably younger than 1670 m.a., and the rocks are intruded by granitic rocks dated at 1509 ± 22 m.a.Mineralization occurs in shear zones at the contact between an amphibolite and enclosing pelitic schists, and within the amphibolite itself. Mineralization consists of cobaltite and scheelite with lesser chalcopyrite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, i1menite, allanite, xenotime and apatite. The mineralizing event involved addition of K, Cl, CO2 W, As, Cu, Ni, Au and rare earths and depletion of Ca and Na. It altered a hornblendeandesine/labradorite host assemblage to a biotiteoligoclase/andesine-scapolite assemblage. Though tourmalinealteration also occurs, it is probably not related to mineralization.It is concluded that the mineralization and alteration assemblages formed by reaction of saline fluids with amphibolite close to the peak of amphibolite facies metamorphism.The fluids are probably metamorphically derived, and their movement was channelled through high strain zones in the sequence. The material carried by the fluids was derived from the metasedimentary/metavolcanic pile as a whole.Other deposits in the Mt. Cobalt-Selwyn area have characteristics comparable with Mt. Cobalt, and the mechanism for the genesis of Mt. Cobalt may have applications at other areas in the region.

It is well accepted that the blast furnace will continue as the main route for iron-making for many more years. However, its limitations have motivated researchers to look for alternative routes, particularly, those where non-coking coal is used for liquid iron production. Smelting reduction (SR), where coal and oxygen are used to produce liquid iron and power is now receiving serious attention. Several smelting reduction reactors are now operating in pilot plant scale and one or two have reached commercial status.
