THE irregularity of the Mount Morgan (Queensland) ore body presents problems other than those only of mining. For irregularity of outline is coupled with irregularity of grade, and the ore varies so rapidly from profitable to non-profitable, and fromhighly siliceous to highly pyritic, that the task of estimating quantities and values of ore reserves is manifestly rendered a difficult one, while the actual disposal of the broken ore demands constant supervision.Four classes of ore are handled. The oxidized ore, cheaply mined and cheaply treated, is obtained by quarrying from the top of the mountain. Below the 315-ft. mine level (measured from the original summit) sulphide ore comes in, and this is divided into siliceous sulphide ore (too siliceous for economic smelting), sulphide ore suitable for smelting, and ore too poor either to be smelted or to be treated by wet process with the siliceous ore. Effective exploration, testing and analysis is essential for good process design and optimisation of coal preparation plants. Coal processing relies on the sizing and washability characteristics of the particular coal to define the most cost effective design to meet the market requirements. Flowsheet development and equipment selection is dependent on the natural quality characteristics of the coal, its physical properties and the value of the final product in its market. The methodology of process selection and the key elements in design are discussed. Coal is consumed in two general markets: ò steaming coal - both domestic and export, and ò metallurgical coal. This paper discusses the typical economic analysis required to evaluate the potential for, and cost benefit of, providing the flexibility to switch coals between markets. A case study illustrates the methodology of process selection in a typical high value metallurgical coal.

Access to geoscience reference informa- tion including mining and mineral processing has increased considerably in the last five years in Australia. This has been due principally to the use of computer-based information storage and retrieval systems. The main reference data base for the mineral and petroleum industries and disciplines in Australia is the Australian Earth Sciences Information System (AESIS), cooperatively developed and coordinated by the Australian Mineral Foundation (AMF). AESIS is created on the CSIRO computing network (CSIRONET) which has a CYBER 76 host computer located at the CSIRO Division of Computing Research (DCR) at Canberra. Data entry was until recently carried out by AMF using a dedicated line through the Adelaide CSIRONET node to the CYBER 76 interactive system. Data entry is now done directly at the AMF on a DEC PDP 11/44 mini computer that is also a host work station on CSIRONET. Data collection via magnetic tape media input from other computer-based systems is under development. The software used for data entry and management of the data base was developed by CSIRO CILES Systems Development Group. For public interactive online use the AESIS data base is transferred by tape to AUSINET - the Australian information net- work run by ACI Computer Services, Melbourne, where the data base is converted to a form suitable for the IBM STAIRS software. CSIRO facilities at DCR Canberra are used to produce computer type-set camera ready products and output in microform, on magnetic tape or as graphic display. Studies were carried out on dissolution and oxidation of iron powder in ammonia-ammonium carbonate solution using oxygen over pressures. Cobalt and nickel losses during iron oxidation under different conditions were investigated. Regression equations were derived for percent cobalt loss and percent iron oxidation using ammonia, ammonium carbonate and oxygen partial pressure as the variables. The equations were tested for adequacy using Fisher's test. Cobalt losses increased with the increase of initial cobalt concentration and about 400 mg/l of cobalt was lost from a solution containing 500 mg/l cobalt. A maximum of about 80 mg/l nickel was lost from 1 g/l nickel containing solution, and this loss remained the same even when the nickel concentration was increased to 7.5 g/l.

A rotating disc geometry has been used to provide a uniformly accessible surface for a kinetic study of the cementation of the metals cadmium, lead and silver from dilute aqueous solutions. This work is an extension of studies carried out on the Cu/Zn and Cu/Fe systems for which the rection rate was found to be completely solution-phase mass-transfer controlled. When the amount of material deposited was greater than 0.2 to 0.4 mg/cm2 there was an apparent enhancement in e which is attributed to the formation of a roughened deposit. This same phenomeon was obseived in the Cu/Zn Cu/Fe systems. Again, the rate of reaction of each system investigated was found to be solution-phase mass ,..~sfer controlled.

Flotation surveying can be an extremely powerful means of determining opportunities for circuit optimisation and benchmarking. The type of survey employed depends heavily on the nature of the information required from the survey. It follows then that the type of survey determines the type of samples required; however, regardless of the type, the success or failure of a survey is often dependent on the correct used of appropriate sampling techniques at each sampling point. For a successful flotation plant survey it is vital that the correct samples be collected at the correct time in respect to the feed and each other. This paper discusses the current best practice sampling methods used in flotation surveying and discusses in detail the ideal sample masses based on theoretical analysis. This paper compares different results for overburden volume estimation assisted by geoestatistics, particularly using kriging methods. The main goal is to obtain the most reliable digital terrain model for the calculation of the overburden volume. The data was collected on an irregularly spaced grid and interpolated values were calculated to provide a denser, more regular data set before volume estimation. The field work was developed at the Butia-Leste Coal Mine, southern most Brazil, where an accurate survey was done using a total station theodolite with electronic data collector. The study was developed in five main steps: data acquisition, exploratory data analysis, spatial continuity measurements, point and block kriging estimation and verification of the results. Data acquisition was carried out on a 5 x 5 in grid. This dense grid provides an exhaustive data set of the real terrain against which data subsets can be compared for the various interpolation procedures and volume calculation. This provides an interesting insight into the influence of the number of data on the estimation error. Univariate statistics were used to compare each data subset and the exhaustive dataset. Ordinary kriging on the data subsets followed by contouring was carried out using Geoeas and Surfer software respectively. A subroutine written in C provided the link between the files generated in Geoeas and subsequent contouring routines embedded into the Surfer package. Omnidirectional and directional variograms were modelled defining the parameters for kriging estimation using Geoeas. Different variogram models were checked through cross validation prior to kriging. A comparison between the magnitude of the differences in volumes calculated with the different DTMs was attained. These final result indicates the sensitivity of the volume obtained to the number of data points. As the number of data points increases the estimation error decreases, but at some point there is no significant decrease in the final volume with the collection of additional data.

The Department of Mapping and Surveying (DMS), the Australian Key Centre in Land Information Studies (AKCLIS), the Department of Industry Development (DID) and the State Government Computer Centre (SGCC) are testing a regional information network in northern Queensland. Several study sites have been chosen by different groups of participants. The members of each common-interest group share their data for the site. They can also access datasets supplied by other organisations that are not directly involved in the particular study being undertaken. The participants include state government departments, local authorities, fed- eral organisations and the private sector. The participants communicate with computer systems in Brisbane via Q-Net. Q-Net is a pilot State government tele- communications network, established by the Department of Industry Development. Q-Net uses the communications sat- ellite AUSSAT 1 as the primary instrument of data transfer. The Q-Net network is a star system, with a Master Earth Station in Brisbane acting as a hub for radial earth stations, located throughout Queensland.

The aim with this paper is to discuss experiences from the ongoing research project ‘Attract: A roadmap to attractive, inclusive, and safe mining workplaces’. The project’s aim is to analyse possibilities, effects, and consequences of the green and digital transformation in the Swedish mining industry from workplace, socio-technical and gender equality perspectives. The research project (2022–2025) at Human Work Science at Luleå University of Technology is financed by the strategic innovation program Swedish Mining Innovation (a joint venture by the national research funds Vinnova, Formas and the Swedish Energy Agency). The project includes a multidisciplinary research group of five senior researchers and five PhDstudents and a broad repertoire of methods, eg literature reviews, qualitative interviews with both managers and workers, workplace observations, workshops, surveys, and project seminars where the researchers and the company representatives together analyse the results. One important part of the project is the applied approach where the researchers work together with two mining companies and one subcontractor company. The project has two parallel main subprojects.

An ongoing challenge in the coal industry is pyrite removal using the flotation method for fine particles. The use of a æseparation in frothÆ (SIF) technique to recover coarse particles of up to a few millimetres in size has presented a potential solution. However the commercial success of SIF is still limited due to the poor understanding of the separation mechanism. The particle floatability in SIF is determined by the constructive or destructive stresses resulting from the forces exerted by the particle on the bubble films. Hence, the surfactant properties and the mineral characteristics (eg hydrophobicity, shape, etc) are the key factors that control the interaction between the particle and froth. In the present work, the interaction forces between different particles (ie crushed glass, pyrite and coal) and a single air bubble are measured in a non-ionic surfactant solution (pentaethylene glycol mono n-dodecyl ether, C12E5) using an atomic force microscope (AFM). Experimental results show that the interaction is primarily dependent on the contact angle (ie the degree of hydrophobicity of the minerals). For crushed glass, the transition from repulsion to attraction was observed as the contact angle increased. As the concentration of C12E5 increased, the adhesion force was suppressed due to wrapping effect. For coal and pyrite with much higher hydrophobicity, long-range attraction was observed. The effect of shape factor was only visible at high surfactant coverage where sign of destabilisation became noticeable on the retracting force curve. These results provide a fundamental understanding of the direct interaction forces of a complex real system between an irregular particle of either crushed glass, pyrite or coal and a single air bubble. Theories developed for interpretation and modelling are thus far based upon the study of ideal systems of glass or polystyrene spheres and an air bubble and were incapable of explaining the interactions in complex real systems. The presented measurements were a first approach to the problem of real mineral-bubble interaction in flotation systems. Thus, the results can only best be interpreted semi-quantitatively.

Roof conditions at Southern Colliery, the second longwall mine to be established at German Creek, were found to be much stronger and more massive than at the earlier longwall mine on the lease. Investigations were made to ascertain the level of face support required for longwall extraction under the changed geological conditions. Geotechnical information was provided from drillholes and highwall exposures. Downhole geophysical logs, notably the sonic velocity log, were used to obtain a distribution of the major lithological units over the mine area. A representative type section of the strata and geomechanical properties was compiled to form the basis for numerical modelling. Two-dimensional finite element methods were used to predict strata movements and chock loads under cantilevered roof conditions. The model incorporated a 6.3 in thick roof beam either bonded or detached, with either a 2 in or 5 in overhang. The solid rib, immediate roof, chock support and goaf were modelled as distinct parts, in addition a front abutment stress profile, derived from three-dimensional displacement-discontinuity analysis, was superimposed on the model.

Trial ore production began at the Hilton Mine in 1987 with ore being trucked into Mount Isa for treatment at the Lead/zinc Concentrator. The expansion of output from the Hilton mine required additional concentrator capacity which led to the design and construction of the Hilton Concentrator. Systematic laboratory and Pilot Plant testwork dating back to 1968 to develop a flowsheet and reagent regime suited to the varied and generally complex mineralogy of the Hilton ore was successfully concluded with a Pilot Plant trial using a sulphoxy based sphalerite depression system in early 1988.In May 1988, a decision was made to build a 750 000 t/y concentrator with some novel technological and capital-efficient features. The Hilton Concentrator commenced operations in December 1989 reaching target grinding rates and metallurgical performance by mid-1990. Current ore treatment rate is 800 000 t/y.Lead concentrates assaying 43 - 48 per cent Pb are combined with the Lead/Zinc Concentrator lead concentrates and smelted at Mount Isa. Zinc and Low Grade Middlings (LGM) concentrates are filtered in the zinc filter plant at Isa with those from the Lead/Zinc Concentrator and then railed to Townsville for export or treatment in Australia.

We operate a 50 cubic metre per hour mobile alluvial tin mine on small scattered deposits in the Irvinebank area. Wash is loaded by a Cat. 950 front end loader into the bin of a screening section and screen undersize is pumped to a separate jig unit. Both units are rubber tyre mounted and are shifted once a month when the haul distance gets to about 150 metres. The shift takes about 8 hours.The screening section is sited close to the face with a ramp for dumping in and a one metre drop for the screen oversize which is removed by the loader.A reciprocating plate feeder with variable rate hydraulic drive, feeds wash onto a horizontal 1.2 metre x 2.2 metre two deck Kinergy screen. Minus 10 millimetre undersize is pumped by a Warman 6/4 sand pump with a 37 kW variable speed Reeves Motordrive to the jig unit.The jigs are placed 20 to 70 metres away so that tailings will run back into previously mined ground. Reject stone is used to impound the sand and mud, allowing the water to filter through and return to the feed water pump.An MTE trapezoidal module is used as a primary jig. Hutch product is pumped to an eight cell clean-up jig which we developed ourselves along MTE lines. It has a trapezoidal shape and sawtooth stroke provided by cams. Clean tin is taken from the first four spigots. These consist of clear plastic tubes fitted with taps so that there is no water loss except when the tin is drawn off. Fine concentrate from the last four spigots is put over a curvilinear table which sits on a steel base packed with earth.

The global mining industry is perceived to be a world leader in sustainability reporting û with a 2008 Ernst & Young survey placing four mining companies in their top five performers in sustainability reporting in South Africa. There is certainly good evidence to support this finding, but there remain many ongoing issues with respect to sustainability reporting and some important areas for improvement by mining companies globally. This paper begins with a broad (but brief) review of sustainability and the technical basis for reporting against a wide range of typical indicators or measures on the environmental aspects of mining. The various protocols, frameworks or systems are then reviewed, with a particular focus on the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and its associated mining sector supplement (including the evolution from environmental to sustainability reporting). A wide-ranging survey of reporting by mining companies is presented, including detailed analysis of 2007 and some commodity sectors over time. Examples of reported data are synthesised and analysed, focusing on their accuracy, consistency and utility for accurate assessment of the life cycle impacts for minerals and metals. A number of areas are identified for improved reporting by all mining companies, including water resources and consumption, energy consumption, process inputs (eg acids, solvents, etc), pollutant emissions, including greenhouse emissions, mine site data (not aggregate company totals) and finally rehabilitation and land status. Given the nature of mining, and considering parallels between æpeak oilÆ and the mining sector, it is critical that the state of sustainability reporting continue to evolve and improve û both in the number of companies using the GRI but also in the level and consistency of data being reported. Overall, the paper presents an important review of the present state of the art in sustainability reporting for mining, and provides a range of insights into ways to help improve reporting in the future for all mining companies.

Extensive reserves of kaolin of the type suitable for use as a high quality paper coating exist on the Weipa Peninsula. In 1986 a commercial processing plant was constructed to produce 100 000 tonnes per annum of coating quality kaolin targetted principally for export. A number of processing difficulties have limited the production capability of the plant. The prime area being the pressure filtration operation with achieved cycle times being around 50-60% of design. The rate determining steps being press filling, press unloading and filter cloth washing. This paper details and summarises testwork and results from our attempts at decreasing the filtration cycle time.

For the past five years the University of Queenslandhas, through its various workshops, been preaching to Australia that there was a potentially hazardous situation from earthquakes for urban Australia. A few people outside The University accepted this, but largely the warnings fell on deaf ears.The 1989 Newcastle earthquake changed that per-ception. The most important lessons to emerge from Newcastle were (i)the realization that in continental areas small earthquakes cause widespread damage:(ii)the local geology of an area is of great importance in the damage done by an earthquake.These two factors clearly indicate that, in the future, we must take far greater account of the "Urban Geology" of an area. This paper discusses the need for urban geology and its impact on seismic risk and compares that with the traditional methods of assessing seismic risk.

The main objective of sulphide flotation in a cassiterite concentrator is to remove sulphide minerals (pyrite, pyrrhotite and sometimes chalcopyrite) from the ore prior to gravity concentration. Tin losses in the sulphide flotation stage account for a significant proportion of the total tin loss. separate studies of the sulphide flotation circuits of Renison Ltd and Cleveland Tin Ltd were conducted to investigate reasons for the tin losses. Sampling surveys were conducted in the rougher-scavenger and also the regrind-cleaner sections of both plants. In both plants, the rougher circuits recover excessive quantities of liberated cassiterite, while recovery of the desired composite cassiterite-sulphide fraction is low. The regrind mills are successful in liberating the composite cassiterite in the rougher concentrate, but at the expense of increasing the proportion of very fine tin mineral. The cleaner circuits recover between 40 and 60% of the cassiterite received, and this is all lost.

Over a four-hour period of steady plant operation samples were taken at regular intervals from points within the grinding and flotation circuits. Size fractions of each composite sample were analysed for lead and zinc values and a comparison made of the behaviour of the lead, zinc and gangue minerals, size by size throughout the whole circuit. Analysis of the breakage behaviour using dynamic mathematical models gave the rates of breakage of each size fraction of each main component. Simulated grinding experiments showed that the main grinding circuit had sane reserve capacity. In the lead flotation circuit all lead values between 150 mesh (Tyler) and 5 microns had excellent flotation characteristics, and a major proportion had a high rate of flotation which was practically the same for all sizes. Increase in overall lead recovery would require improvement of the flotation behaviour of ultra-fine lead minerals. These were slow floating and were responsible for approximately half the lead losses in the final zinc concentrate and one third of the lead losses in the final tails.

Slope stability has now become a practical tool in the design and oper- ation of open pits. The stability of rock slope depends on many factors, including not only structural geology, the existence of weak layers, ground- water, blasting and weathering, but also the virgin stress field. This paper presents an application of a numerical method to investigate the effect of the virgin stress on slope stability. The finite element method is employed to simulate the excavation of open pits. Redistributed stress fields in the slope of open pit are computed for several different virgin stress fields. Based on the redistributed stress fields, the shear force which tends to produce sliding of a rock mass and the frictional resistance to sliding are evaluated. The possibility of potential failure is assessed by the limit equilibrium method. The combination of the finite element method with the equilibrium method provides a powerful analytical tool for slope stability. The significant effect of virgin stress on the stability of slopes is shown by studying a typical case.
