Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) operates one iron ore mine, three concentration plants and three pelletising plants in Kiruna, Sweden. The current methods of separation at the beneficiation plants are low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) and reverse apatite flotation, where the wet LIMS stage is regarded as the crucial part of silica separation from the ore. Because future silica levels are expected to increase in the incoming material to the beneficiation plants, geometallurgy has become an important area of development and research.A laboratory-scale methodology was developed for the systematic characterisation of the ore for mineral processing, with the focus on the high silica ore type B2 and newly discovered subtypes. This methodology combines mineralogical, geochemical and process mineralogical characteristics. Automated mineralogy (QEMSCAN®) is used to study the modal mineralogy, the distribution of silicate minerals in different particle size classes after comminution, the deportment of silicon (Si) between various silicates and the degree of liberation and intergrowth of magnetite and silicates. An essential stage in the systematic characterisation of the ore deposit for mineral processing is the estimation and simulation of different parameters from the laboratory scale to the full scale at the concentration plants. This is achieved by using empirical models based on the data collected at the mineral processing plants. As the first step to implement the geometallurgical information, the current geological model is reconstructed with the mineralogy and the two, newly defined subtypes of high silica ore type B2 are separated into different domains.To study the reduction of the SiO2 content in the magnetite concentrate, a large-scale reverse cationic silicate flotation laboratory test program was initiated in early spring 2016. This program investigated potential silicate flotation in the beneficiation plants at the Kiirunavaara site. The second target is to implant mineral processing parameters into the block model based on the new geological model. The sulphides can be arranged in a series determined by the relative amounts of ionic and covalent bonding present. This series is similar to the paragenetic series common to most sulphide ore deposits. Investigation of the surface tensions of the corresponding heavy metal iodides by the maximum bubble pressure method throws some light upon this relationship. It is shown that the surface tension of molten iodides decreases as the chemical bonding within them becomes more covalent. These results are interpreted in terms of the constitution of the melts, and are extended to cover the case of sulphides in solution in a silicate melt. It is concluded that sulphides tend to lower the surface tension of silicate melts and that this tendency becomes greater as the bonding within the dissolved sulphide groups becomes more covalent. A possible relationship between this conclusion and the origin of paragenesis in sulphide ore deposits is indicated.INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that the order of deposition, or paragenesis of sulphide minerals is remarkably similar in hypogene ore deposits throughout the world. More than 11 Moz of Au and 50 Moz of Ag have been produced from epithermal deposits in New Zealand, almost entirely from 50 deposits in the Hauraki goldfield. Since the 1980s, new deposits have been discovered at Waihi (Favona, Trio, Correnso) and nearby at Golden Cross. Feasibility studies into reopening the Talisman mine at Karangahake are continuing, and advanced projects with preliminary inferred resource estimates are reported at Wharekirauponga, Neavesville and Muirs. In the Taupo Volcanic Zone, 11 prospects have been drilled, resulting in the definition of large but low-grade Au-Ag resources at Ohakuri. In Northland, several Au, Ag and/or Hg prospects are known, and small quantities of Ag and Hg have been mined. Six prospects have had some drilling, with the most advanced exploration at Puhipuhi. Chemical and isotopic analyses of fumarole gases from Galeras Volcano, Colombia provide significant insights into the origin of volatile components in the magma. Water comprises a mixture of magmatic (rock-equilibrated at high temperature) and meteoric, with the relative proportions varying through time. Carbon isotopes are most consistent with a mantle source, although other contributions to the system cannot be ruled out. Nitrogen most likely originated from organic matter in subducted oceanic sediments. All of these 'primary' components have been modified somewhat by interaction or exchange with other reservoirs during ascent to the surface. In addition to information on the origin of the gases, these data show significant temporal variations precursory to eruptive events. Chemical ratios change and water becomes more meteoric in character prior to eruptions.

Five major veining events have been identified within the area surrounding the Mount Whaleback microplaty hematite deposit. These veining events can be directly correlated to the established deformation history of the Hamersley Province (Brown et al, in press). Vein formation temperatures of 203 to 231¦C have been obtained from primary fluid inclusions within veins which formed around the postulated time of ore formation. Preliminary proton induced x-ray emition (PIXE) analysis of these inclusions indicates KCl is the dominant salt species with varying levels of Ca, Fe, Ti, Mn present. It is suggested that some of these veins may have formed from feeder or effluent fluids from microplaty hematite ore formation.

To obtain the combustion process of a coal fire, a high-temperature programmed system is used to simulate the spontaneous combustion process of fresh and weathered coals. Both fresh coal and weathered coals from Liulingou, Inner Mongolia, China, were used to examine the gas releases from constant temperature to 650°C. Moreover, gas release rate was used to calculate the characteristic temperatures. The results showed the coal samples lasted to oxidise under high temperatures, and released plenty of heat to assist self-heating. The humic acid contained inside the weathered coal went through thermal decomposition as temperature rising and generated gases. This resulted in increasing concentrations of CO, CO2, CH4, C2H4, and C2H6. Changes of CH4, C2H4, and C2H6 gases were also similar. For weathered coal, concentrations of three gases were kept in balance under low temperatures, increased rapidly with the temperature rising. After the ignition temperature, the concentration of hydrocarbon was reduced. In addition, particle size affected coal spontaneous combustion. Coal samples with less than 0.9 mm in size produced much more CO than others. Interpreting the behaviour of granular material and simulating the gravity flow are complex processes in cave mining methods. In this paper, a new Cellular Automata based code – FlowSim – is used as a flexible tool to simulate the gravity flow and subsidence zone in block caving mines. The simulation results of the gravity flow model in a real scaled mine as well as a scaled physical model are presented in this study. In this research, FlowSim was first calibrated at a mine, based on the information obtained from smart markers. These markers were located in five points of the second block of the Esmeralda sector, at the El Teniente copper mine, Codelco, Chile. The calibration was performed with the objective of reducing the discrepancy between the extraction zone defined by markers in the mine and FlowSim outputs. Regarding the mine data, FlowSim was calibrated with the minimum error of ten per cent between real and simulated results. Then, the calibrated FlowSim model was used to simulate the flow behaviour of a scaled physical model. This model was constructed in the Block Caving Laboratory of the University of Chile to scale down the same block of the Esmeralda sector with the scale of 1:200. The FlowSim outputs show that this software enables the simulation of the gravity flow of the scaled model with less than five per cent discrepancy in grade and dilution entry to the drawpoints. The Ekati Diamond Mine is located on permafrost terrain in CanadaÆs Northwest Territories. The mine rock consists of: diamond-bearing and barren kimberlite; and surrounding waste rock such as granite. The kimberlite occurs in several vertical æpipesÆ that are, or will be, mined using open pits. Early predictions of drainage chemistry at Ekati identified the potential for ARD due to sulfide oxidation from both waste rock and kimberlite. This was surprising for the kimberlite, because neutralisation potentials (NP) are typically hundreds of kg CaCO3 equivalent/t. However, subsequent testwork showed that substantial portions of the NP ædisappearedÆ quickly, apparently due to the unusual non-carbonate mineralogy. In any case, additional predictive work concluded much of the rock was benign and there would be no ARD. Shortly after mining started, ARD appeared from both the waste rock and kimberlite, although a few years passed before the company and its consultants recognised that at least some of the acidic water was ARD. Numerous other processes have been put forward as possible explanations for the remaining acidic drainage, although none have been either confirmed or eliminated. Because: the causes of the ARD and acidity are not known; no causes have been eliminated and more have been added; drainage chemistry was not predicted accurately; and future mining will encounter similar rock. I believe the Ekati Diamond Mine needs high-level assistance to understand current chemistry and to avoid problems with future drainage. Organisations like INAP, MEND3, and universities could provide this assistance.

Cemented rock fill (CRF) is often used to support open stope voids. This allows for the full recovery of ore while achieving global mine stability. In such cases, the exposed CRF masses require adequate compressive strength and stiffness to resist the forces and limit the displacement associated with movements in the rock mass surrounding the excavations. The CRF material preparation often involves the use of large particles, either from crushed rock or development mining waste. This means that conventional laboratory samples cannot be readily used to determine the laboratory strength. Consequently, a research project was undertaken to determine the influence of sample size on uniaxial compressive strength. This paper presents the results from CRF samples that were prepared using the same mix design and then cast into moulds with diameters of 150, 240, 300 and 400 mm. The laboratory testing also allowed a better understanding of the effect of particle size distribution upon the overall strength of a rock fill mass. Mr. H. W. GEPP said he desired to bring particular attention to this paper. The underlying intention of the Development and Migration Commission when the paper was prepared was to place at the disposal of Australian miners and metallurgists the story of the development of tin metallurgy as it had been advanced in other countries, particularly Great Britain. They had very considerable resources of low-grade tin-bearing metals in the eastern coast of Australia particularly, and they need not anticipate that tin was going to remain at the extremely low price at which they saw it to-day. The Commission felt that it was most desirable to place 'on record, and make easily available, the story of the treatment of comparatively low-grade tin ores in other parts of the world.Arrangements were made that the technical staff at Australia House, in conjunction with Mr. H. S. Elford; should collect this information so that in due course, when Australia awoke to an interest in low-grade deposits, of which there were many throughout Australia, this story would then not,have to be gathered from other areas and other places of the world. The -paper was a contribution which would turn out to be of very great value. He suggested to the younger members that this thorough contribution could be made the subject of study so that they would be ready to assist in the developments which must come. Mr. WM. APLIN said there was one point in connection with the paper upon which he would like to speak. Talvivaara deposits, Kuusilampi and Kolmisoppi, comprise one of the largest sulfide nickel resources in the world with 642 Mt in Measured and Indicated Resource categories. TalvivaaraÆs preferred extraction technology is bioheapleaching, which is already widely used for other metals, notably copper and gold. The company has demonstrated the viability of bioheapleaching technology for the extraction of nickel using the Talvivaara ore. The leaching process is heat generating and therefore suitable for the subarctic climatic conditions. The planned annual metal production is 33 000 t of nickel, 60 000 t of zinc, 10 000 t of copper and 1200 t of cobalt. Talvivaara deposits are well-suited for open pit mining due to a thin overburden, favourable resource geometry and a low waste to ore ratio. The ore is relatively low-grade, but well suited to bioheapleaching due to its high sulfide content. Bioheapleaching is a process whereby metals are leached from ore as a result of bacterial action. The bacteria used in the Talvivaara bioheapleaching process are endemic to the area and therefore well adjusted to the prevailing environmental conditions. The solution is collected at the bottom of the heaps and either re-circulated through the heap or fed to metal recovery. In metal recovery, nickel, copper, zinc and cobalt are precipitated from the pregnant leach solution and filtered to produce saleable metal products. After the metals are removed, the solution is further purified and returned to irrigate the heaps. Mining, bioheapleaching and metal recovery techniques for the Talvivaara mine have been tested in a 17 000 t on-site demonstration trial during 2005 and 2006. Subsequent construction of the mine started in 2007 and commercial production in the fourth quarter of 2008.

Deposits of the metalloids arsenic and antimony occur in quartz veins of mesothermal hydrothermalsystems in the South Island as arsenopyrite (AsFeS) and stibnite (Sb2S3). Arsenopyrite and stibnite occur in natural exposures in gold-mining areas, and additional arsenopyrite and stibnite have been exposed to the atmosphere by mining activity. At present the drinking water limits for dissolved As and Sb are 10 ppb and 3 ppb respectively. Sampling and analysis techniques are critical to determination of metalloid concentrations at these low levels. Endeavour Inlet in the Marlborough Sounds is an historic mining area (late 19th Century) with elevated As and Sb in waters emanating from mineralised rocks. Waters running out of abandoned adits have concentrations of As and/or Sb up to ppm levels. Natural waters have high Sb and low As, and the As levels increase markedly where anthropogenic activity has exposed rock. Changes in Sb/As ratio could potentially be used to quantify the anthropogenic component of metalloid mobility on mine sites on the 100-year time scale.

At Reefton, mesothermal gold deposits occur in the Ordovician Greenland Group basement and bituminous coal deposits occur in overlying Eocene Brunner Coal Measures. These different resource types occur in close proximity to one another in the same topography, vegetation and climate. Both types of resources have been mined for many years and as a result historic mining areas discharge water with chemistry reflecting the mineralogy of the deposits. Coal measures release natural acid rock drainage throughout the region due to oxidation of pyrite in coal and associated sediments. Levels of acidity are increased in mining areas, and pH near three is common. Gold mines contain pyrite, arsenopyrite and stibnite. Discharge waters from these sites have pH near seven because of the high acid neutralising capacity of the basement rocks. Both coal and gold mining sites have iron oxyhydroxide precipitates in drainage waters. These precipitates are more abundant at gold mining sites, and one deposit is up to 5 m thick. Iron oxyhydroxide at coal mine sites contain Zn (up to 89 ppm), Ni (up to 10 ppm), As (up to 163 ppm), Cr (up to 23 ppm), Pb (up to 16), and Cu (up to 11 ppm). Jarosite group minerals have been identified in the coalmine iron oxyhydroxide, although most of the material is amorphous. Gold mine iron oxyhydroxide contains Zn (up to 353 ppm), Ni (up to 592 ppm), Cr (up to 17 ppm), Cu (up to 72 ppm), Pb (up to 29 ppm), Sb (up to 230 ppm), and this material is particularly high in As (up to 20 wt per cent). Most of the material is amorphous but distinctive zones (mm scale) are As rich (up to 30 wt per cent As oxide). Pharmacosiderite, K2Fe4(As04)3 (OH)5.6.3H20, is a secondary mineral in one deposit. These iron oxyhydroxide deposits are useful indicators for the metals mobilised into the environment by oxidation in the historic workings.

China’s mineral deposits are the result of metallogenic processes associated with the geodynamic evolution of tectonic plates and eventual amalgamation into their modern configuration. The principal tectonic provinces of China comprise the North China Craton, Yangtze Craton, Cathaysia Craton, Tarim block, Altay-Tianshan-Hinggan orogens (part of the Central Asian Orogenic Bel), Central China orogens, Songpan-Ganze orogen and Alpine-Himalayan fold belts, which are part of the huge Tethysides. These tectonic elements are testimony to a complex geological history spanning more than 3000 million years. This contribution will focus on selected areas of the Altay-Tianshan, the fold belts surrounding the North China Craton and Yangtze Craton and the mineral systems along the Ailaoshan-Red River fault zone. æSustainabilityÆ is one of those words that has gained more usage in popular discourse than in the dictionary. In fact it is not in many dictionaries at all. Typically, given this, it also seems to mean different things depending on whose lips it emerges from. It is now like a code word in that if people say it, you donÆt have to think about its meaning; it is just æthereÆ and is taken for granted. This is a problem for the mining industry as we are now using the term too and to be effective in what we do, we need to have a reality check and see how those outside who have views on us (æstakeholdersÆ maybe) use it. The core issue seems to be æsustainability of whatÆ: the industry?, a company?, the global environment?, particular ecosystems?, the community? At these levels, the term seems almost meaningless. If we do not even agree on what it is, at least broadly, our communication and possible partnerships for going forward will be difficult to say the least. One reference to æsustainÆ in my thesaurus is: æTo keep from failing during stress or difficultyÆ. This may be a clue to something approaching a common notion. I suggest that to use æsustainabilityÆ we make the following assumptions:that we are talking about human activity aimed at making a living that has an impact on the natural and social environment; that humans must make a living (though what this needs to include is problematic); that the impact of particular activities has been problematic to date and needs to be monitored, altered, stopped, etc; that there is stress on both social and natural environments; and that change can be effected in order that particular activities such as mining minimise their negative effects and maximise their positive. This is why we are taking part in sessions such as this one today. Two more initial observations: First, it strikes me that even with the above assumptions laid out, æsustainabilityÆ and æsustainable developmentÆ are too abstract and general as concepts. We have to break these high and mighty ideals down into workable, bite-size chunks, into practical ways of dealing with the world outside our sites and companies. Second, sustainability, on both sides of the fence, too often focuses on nature and environment as though they are independent of people and community. I would argue, perhaps provocatively, that sustainability is primarily a people issue and has to be tackled as such. I want to look at the overall climate for business today and how it has responded before I return to what we can and need to do as the mining industry to make æsustainabilityÆwork.

Magnetite deposits with distinctive ¦ actinolite ¦ apatite-bearing gangue and spatially-extensive sodic-calcic wall rock alteration occur in both Proterozoic metamorphic terrains and Mesozoic-Tertiary magmatic arcs. Examples from both settings constitute significant sources of iron ore (egKiruna, Sweden; El Romeral, Chile) and some host major Cu-Au deposits that have a local association with K-silicate alteration (eg Cloncurry district, NW Queensland; Copiapo district, Chile). A growing body of evidence points to a hydrothermal origin for these systems involving high temperature, low S oxidised fluids. The Cloncurry magnetite-Cu-Au deposits are products of the local structurally channelised influx of a specialised high salinity ore fluid into larger-scale alteration systems developed during pluton emplacement at greater depths than those associated with subvolcanic (porphyry) Cu-Au deposits. The geological characteristics of deposits in magmatic arcs are consistent with a similar mode of origin albeit in rather different tectonic settings.

The final arsenic bearing waste products at the majority of metallurgical and chemical enterprises are cakes in which arsenic is present in the form of calcium arsenate. Burial of cakes demands construction of special burial sites and does not guarantee reliable protection from arsenic penetration into the ground and surface waters. Under laboratory conditions we developed technology for processing calcium arsenate cakes with obtaining low toxic products suitable for long-term storage, meeting environmental requirements. The investigations have shown that thermal processing of briquetted mixtures of cakes containing 15 - 20 per cent weight of pyrite under the temperature of 873 - 923¦K during 45 - 60 minutes gives briquettes sufficiently hard for transportation and long-term storage. Arsenic, under high sulphidisation temperature is bonded into low solubility non-volatile iron sulphide bearing compounds having chemical properties similar to the natural arsenic compounds. Solubility of the obtained products in neutral, acid and alkaline media was investigated during long period of time (three to 12 months). It was determined that arsenic content in the solutions did not exceed the norms for cultural and welfare basins and fish-ponds.

There is significant value at stake in the mining industry from the implementation of new technologies that support the enhanced profitability and sustainability of mines. However, in order to realise this value, new technology must be implemented in a way that is both effective and sustainable. The industry has a mixed history for technology implementation that provides fertile ground for understanding what is necessary for innovation to deliver value. This paper describes early stage research investigating why this is so, with the aim of improving how to deliver value. Several case studies are provided covering both successful and unsuccessful technology interventions.
