Endurance Properties of Non-ferrous Metals Discussion of the paper of D. J. McADAM, JR., presented at the Syracuse Meeting of the Institute of Metals Division and issued, as Paper No. 1506-E, with Mining AND METALLURGY, October, 1925. H. F. MOORE,* Urbana, Ill. (written discussion).-This paper says that the results of tests of some non-ferrous metals made at the University of Illinois and in the testing laboratories at McCook Field are abnormal when they do not agree with results obtained by the author. The writer can see no inherent reason why results of the type uniformly reported in this paper are any more normal. The knee of the stress-cycle, or S-N, diagram comes at different lengths of life for different metals. For steel, the knee occurs after from 1,000,000 to about 4,000,000 cycles, and for some non-ferrous metals not before 20,000,000 of 30,000,000 cycles. The writer can see nothing inherently abnormal in finding certain nonferrous metals for which the knee of the stress-cycle curve occurs at 1,000,000,000 cycles or higher. The writer has had experience with both the cantilever and the rotating-beam testing machine, and thinks that the chance of whipping action in the cantilever machine is a more serious handicap than the action the author has pictured. Furthermore, the writer questions whether the author has shown the existence of a clearly marked and definite endurance limit for all the non-ferrous metals he has tested including the following: Nickel (CT and A-16, Fig. 1), monel (CS-5.5 and BK, Fig. 2), bronze (F and CK, Fig. 4), aluminum bronze ( BJb-1, Fig. 6).

Coal mining historically has been a. hazardous occupation but, in recent years, tremendous progress has been made in reducing accidental coal mine deaths and injuries. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss the basic principles of accident prevention as they are related to coal mining. Accident prevention fundamentals are no different for coal mining than for any other type of work. The fundamentals apply to all industries. Construction workers may be struck by falling tools and materials, and miners may be struck by falling slate and coal. Sailors may be trapped by shipboard fires, and miners may be trapped by mine fires. Railroad brakemen may lose hands and fingers positioning couplers, and miners may lose hands and fingers positioning couplers. Many other examples could be cited, but the point is that accidents that happen in coal mines are basically similar to accidents that happen in other industries. Thus, the basic principles for preventing accidents apply in coal mining as they do in any other type of work. COAL MINE ACCIDENT EXPERIENCE The US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) is the main source for accident experience data in coal mines. Coal mine operators are required, by law, to forward to MSHA monthly the number of fatal and disabling injuries, man-hours worked, and tons of coal mined. This information is compiled and published quarterly, with annual summaries, by MSHA. Trends in the number of fatalities and fatal injury rates are shown in Fig. 1. Major coal mine disasters, with number of miners killed, and dates of coal mine safety legislation are shown in Table 1. The fatal and disabling injury frequency rates for the coal industry are shown in Fig. 2.

A layer of brass was formed on 0 brass using a vapor-solid reaction technique. The variation in composition with distance within the phase layer and across the a -ß interface was determined by an electron probe. The diffusivities were calculated as a function of concentration; the diffusion coefficient in brass was found to change by a factor of twenty-five over a compositional range of 8 at. pct. An explanation is proposed to account for the large change in the diffusivity, based on possible stresses in the diffusion zone; it is suggested that the concentration dependence of the thermodynamic factor might decrease the activation energy with increasing zinc content. ALTHOUGH the body of data on diffusion coefficients (D- values) in terminal solid solutions and in isomorphous systems is quite large, there is but little quantitative information for intermediate alloy phases. This paper recounts measurements of D-values for the ? phase in the Cu-Zn system. The experimental method employed consists in the forming of alloy layers and determining and analyzing the concentration-distance (c-x) curve. The experimental method employed could have been applied to several systems; the Cu-Zn system was chosen because the D-values in the a and ß phases are well known, and can thus be used for purposes of comparison. The rates of growth, of intermediate alloy layers are known for a number of systems. In nearly all cases the thickness varies parabolically with time, as to be expected if the rate of growth is controlled by the D-values. In a few cases, nonparabolic behavior has been noted.1 Nonparabolic growth may be the result of a) a variation of the composition at the phase interface with time, b) interface-controlled kinetics, c) short diffusion times coupled with long vacancy lifetimes (in vacancy diffusion),2 and d) crystal reorientation during diffusion in anisotropic systems.3 In the Al-Ni system4 and in the Al-u5 system parabolic growth kinetics are slowly approached after an initial transient period. In general those phases stable at a given temperature in a system A-B appear as separate phase layers when A and B are put in contact and given a diffusion he at-treatment. In most cases the compositions at the interface of adjacent phase layers are those read from the phase diagrams for the termini of the respective phases. This discontinuity in concentration is taken as independent of time, and the growth of one phase at the expense of another is assumed to be independent of interface kinetics, i.e., the rate of interface movement is controlled by volume diffusion in the phases concerned. wagner6 has given many solutions for multi-phase diffusion processes, assuming that the chemical diffusion coefficient, D, is independent of concentration, as have others. Jost7 has pointed out that the familiar Boltzmann-Matano solution is as valid for a (c-x) curve exhibiting concentration discontinuities at phase boundaries as for the usual single-phase case. Heumann and associates8,9 have applied this solution to the multi-phase case, but lacking concentration data within the several layers were forced to assume linear concentration gradients, thus calculating only average D-values. The purposes of the present study were: 1) to determine the dependence of D on concentration, 2) to calculate the intrinsic diffusion coefficients D?Cu and D?Zn, 3) to establish the time-law for the movement of the interface, 4) to determine the concentration limits at the ß-? interface, and, 5) to attempt to clarify the mechanism of diffusion. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The ? phase is exceedingly brittle; conventional solid couples and conventional sectioning methods were thus inapplicable. Vapor-solid couples were accordingly employed. Unfortunately the equilibrium vapor pressures of Zn for the ? phase are unknown; to escape this awkwardness, samples were enclosed in a capsule containing powder of an alloy of known composition, sufficiently large in quantity as to be effectively an infinite source, maintaining the concentration of Zn at the sample surface constant with time. The sources of Zn-vapor which can be employed in reaction with Cu, or a brass, or ß brass, to form a layer of ? brass satisfactorily wide in concentration range, are alloys of the phases ?, or ? + E or ? + d (depending on the temperature).

IT IS not necessary to travel hundreds of miles from New York City to see examples of modern mining methods applied in tunnel work. In the various subway jobs, for instance, underground work is done on so large a scale as to justify the oft-quoted remark that here is the world's greatest mining camp. In such cases, however, the size of the excavation makes wholly disproportionate comparison with the haulage drift or adit level of the West. But in West Orange, N. J., Antonio -DiMarco is driving a tunnel from two headings on opposite sides of First Mountain, under contract with the town of West Orange, which is similar in nearly every respect to the type of work that must be done at the mines, and merits description as an example of fast and economical tunnel driving under conditions commonly met with by the mining engineer in more inaccessible parts.

Conscious day-to-day concern for his safety by the individual worker is the longest stride toward a good safety experience. How to accomplish the education of the individual worker and supervisor for safety is the problem of The Koppers Coal Co., as it is the problem of all coal companies. IT has been suggested by a number of investigators, I including Hume-Rothery and Raynor,' that certain intermediate phases in metal systems take on interstitial crystal structures because of an appropriate ratio of radii of the two atoms. If the size factor is an important parameter in determining whether or not an intermediate phase will have an interstitial structure, then it would appear reasonable that the relative sizes of interstitial atoms should have a direct relation to their solubilities in interstitial compounds. It was on such a basis that Petch,' in his discussion of the cementite structure, concluded that nitrogen is the only possible element which could replace carbon. Recent X-ray studies by Jacka indicate that the solid solubility of nitrogen in cementite is negligible. If this is the case, then on the basis of size factor it would not be expected that any element can replace carbon in FeaC, since according to Schwarzkopf and Kieffer4 the covalent atomic radii of nitrogen, carbon, and boron are 0.71, 0.76, and 0.87A, respectively. Nevertheless, Vogel and Tammann in 1922 indicated that a quasi-binary relation exists between the interstitial compounds FeaC and Fe2B and that the solid solubility of boron in FeaC at approximately 1150°C is 1.4 pct B by weight. Because of the apparent disagreement between theory and experiment, the solid solubility of boron in FeaC has been reinvestigated. In addition, the influence of boron on the saturation magnetic moment (per gram) and Curie temperature of cementite was determined. Experimental Procedure A series of Fe-B-C alloys which varied in boron content from 0 to 5.4 wt pct B were prepared by arc melting a 50-g ingot using carbonyl iron, Ache-son AUC graphite, and Cooper grade A boron for starting materials. The composition of these alloys is listed in Table I and shown graphically in Fig. 1. The samples represented by the solid circles were used for X-ray analysis and Curie temperature measurements; by the squares, samples used for quantitative metallography; and by the triangles, samples used for saturation magnetic moment measurements and Curie temperature measurements. After arc melting and subsequent quenching from 1000°C, so that all phases in the resulting microstructure were brittle, one half of the 50-g ingots were pulverized until a powder was obtained which was less than 100 mesh. These powders were then homogenized in evacuated Vycor capsules at 1000°C for 24 hr and water quenched. Although the homogenized powder had sintered somewhat, it was suitable for saturation magnetic moment and Curie temperature determinations, for which the 60 to 100-mesh fraction of the powder was used. For X-ray analysis the homogenized powder was crushed again until a 300-mesh powder was obtained. The sink-float methods designated by heavy-media separation processes were pioneered by C. Erb Weunsch for the treatment of base metal ores as an improvement over jigs. The work of Weunsch was further developed by Victor Rakowsky and The American Zinc, Lead and Smelting Co. Early in the development of the processes, the inherent unsuitability of galena as the solid constituent of the medium was recognized and ferrous media amenable to magnetic recovery and control were developed. The high efficiency and low cost of magnetic recovery and cleaning of ferrous media regardless of particle size, slime contamination, or surfacial oxidation had led to the adoption of ferrous media by all of the sink-float plants operating under the heavy-media separation processes patents controlled by American Zinc, Lead and Smelting Co. Approximately 2,000,000 tons of base metal and nonmetallic minerals are treated each month by these methods. Heavy-media separation processes are a modern practical and economical adaptation of the well-known laboratory procedure for separating a mixture of two solids by immersing the mixture in a liquid having a specific gravity intermediate the specific gravities of two solids. The lighter solid floats while the heavier sinks. This method of separation has been attempted on a commercial scale, but the high loss and high cost of the organic liquids halted the development of the process. Many attempts have been made to simulate a heavy liquid by using a suspension of a finely divided solid in water. If the solid phase of the suspension is ground fine enough, the suspension can be made stable or so slow settling that a substantially uniform specific gravity can be maintained from top to bottom of the bath. However, any material separated by such methods will inevitably be contaminated by some slime which will eventually accumulate in the bath and cause a viscous medium at the expense of separating efficiency. Therefore, it is necessary to provide means for continually cleaning a portion of the medium to eliminate slime at the same rate at which it is introduced to the medium. The problem of efficiently cleaning the medium limits the minimum grain size of the solid of the suspension in the case of the Chance sand process for cleaning coal, because de-cantation is the only cleaning method available. If the sand is too fine, it will be lost along with the slime. Therefore, coarse sand must be used, and to maintain a semblance of a uniform suspension, it is necessary to use strong rising water currents. The combination results in a separation based more on hindered settling classification than on sink-float principles. As previously mentioned, galena was used as the solid constituent of the medium during the early stages of the development work. The high specific gravity of galena made it suitable for the preparation of medium for high specific gravity separations. Galena can be cleaned by either decantation or by froth flotation. As with sand, de-cantation limits the minimum particle size of the media that can be cleaned without excessive loss. Froth flotation for cleaning galena medium has been used, but the problem of floating fine galena that has been exposed to extensive oxidation is well known to be a most difficult one. Last year the largest heavy-media plant m the world, and the second plant to be installed, converted from galena medium to ferrous medium despite the fact that the ore contains galena which can be used as medium. The change to ferrous medium has been beneficial in many ways. Today all the heavy-media plants have been converted from galena to ferrous media. Unquestionably, ferrous media have the widest application of any media developed, for the following reasons: 1. Ease of recovery and cleaning by magnetic means. Particle size or surface condition not a factor. 2. Low consumption per ton of ore treated. 3. Resistance to abrasion. 4. Widest range of media densities, including higher workable densities (1.25 to 3.4) than have been found possible with nonferrous media. 5. Space required for recovery and cleaning of ferrous media is considerably less than that for nonferrous media. 6. Ferrous media require lower capital investment and operating costs for media recovery and cleaning. The anisotropic elastic behavior of rolled beryllium sheet has been measured, using a pulse echo technique, and compared with X-ray diffraction data. Calculated elastic stiffness constants compared favorably with published values for beryllium single crystals which were attributed to the strong (0002) rolling plane texture. Variations of Young's modulus in the yolling plane could be associated with the velative distribution of (0002) planes out of their ideal position in the rollitzg pkule. WHEN a metal is subjected to cold working such as drawing, forming, or rolling, a crystallographic texture develops which can significantly alter its physical properties. One method for detecting this texture is X-ray diffraction, but Alers and Liu' have recently pointed out how the prediction of anisotropic physical properties from pole figures alone is not always accurate due to differences in interpretation. Variations in Young's modulus with orientation or, more completely, the values of the effective elastic constants of the worked metal, also serve to indicate the presence of a texture. In fact, as Alers and Liu' pointed out, calculated variations in Young's modulus for assumed orientations, when compared with experimental data, can be used to eliminate some of the uncertainty in interpretation of X-ray pole figures. Thus, elasticity measurements can serve not only to clarify any unusual elastic behavior of worked metal, but also to detect and in part determine the nature of its texture. X-ray determination of the texture of rolled beryllium has been reported by Smigelskas and Barrett,2 who found a strong texture of (0002) in the rolling plane with (1070) planes normal to the rolling direction. In the case of metal rolled at room temperature, they reported that [1010] directions also appeared at positions 60 and 120 deg from the rolling direction in the rolling plane, while in more recent work Keeler3 found these directions were also tilted towards the rolling plane. The texture for beryllium rolled at 80O0C, however, only showed (1010) planes normal to the rolling direction and the spread of (0002) planes out of the rolling plane was less. In looking for elastic anisotropy one might consider unidirectional rolling of a metal as introducing an or-thorhombic symmetry through reorientation of the grains, since the three deformations, compression, extension in the rolling direction, and extension in the cross direction, are orthogonal to each other and unequal in magnitude. Thus the rolled sheet could be treated like an orthorhombic single crystal and the nine stiffness constants of the elasticity tensor used to calculate the anisotropy of Young's modulus, the shear modulus and Poisson's ratio. In this case we could write: which is symmetric about its diagonal. Borik and Alers4 have recently used this approach on rolled die steel with very good results. They found, however, that instead of displaying orthorhombic elastic symmetry their specimens could be considered tetragonal in which case Cr1 = c22, c13 = Ca, and c44 =cjj. This conclusion was made solely on the basis of the measured tensor elements, and serves to point out the advantage of this method for studying the anisotropy of rolled metals. Their calculated values for Young's modulus as a function of angle in the rolling plane also checked very well with direct measurements made on different specimens using the resonance technique. In the present study, cross-rolled beryllium was used which had been unidirectionally rolled about 11 pct for the final reduction. This imparted a slight anisotropy in the rolling plane which was detected both by X-ray techniques and elasticity measurements. For purposes of discussion in this paper, the rolling direction is that direction in which the most reduction passes were made and cross direction is the normal to the rolling direction in the rolling plane. It was also decided to consider the rolled sheet as displaying orthorhombic symmetry for the purpose of obtaining elasticity samples with the direction defined as in Table I. Any change in the final symmetry attributed to the sheet would then be made on the basis of the measured elastic stiffnesses. The final data would then be compared with that expected from the X-ray study and that reported for beryllium single crystals. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Rolling Schedule. The samples used in this study were taken from a large sheet which, because of its size, had to be unidirectionally rolled for the final reduction. The resulting texture was that of cross-rolled metal with a slight unidirectional texture superimposed. A cast beryllium ingot, 9.500 in. sq by 3.325 in. thick, was cross-rolled to 81 pct reduction followed by unidirectional rolling for an additional 11 pct to give a total reduction of 92 pct. The thickness of the final sheet ranged from 0.265 to 0.280 in. Reduction up to 67 pct was done at 980°C and the final 25 pct at 870°C. Analysis for metallic impurities showed aluminum 0.06 pct, iron 0.19 pct, and silicon 0.11 pct, giving a beryllium purity of 99.64 pct.

It has been shown by various investigators that during constant stress creep the dependence of minimum creep rate, 6,, on stress, o, is given by em = A onat low stress levels, md by 6, = A' exp [ß s] at high stress levels. In these relations A, n, A', and ß are constant at constant temperature. A single relation has been found which satisfies conditions for both high and low stresses and agrees well with experimental results. This relation is 2, = AN (sinh a s)n, where A" is a constant at constunt temperature and a = p/n. This relation also satisfies the linear relation, 6, = k s, found at temperatures near the melting point at low stresses. EXPERIMENTAL creep results have led to a number of empirical relationships between minimum creep rate, 6,, and the applied stress, s. Under conditions of constant stress it is generally found that at low-stress levels,'-' the dependence of minimum creep rate is given by 6, = Asn. At high-stress levels'74 the experimental results fit the relation, 6, = A' exp [po l. In these relations A, n, A' and ß are constant at constant temperature. A model based on climb-of-edge dislocations from a pile-up array leads to a relation similar to that found experimentally at low stresses.' On the other hand. theories based on chemical-reaction rate,5 nonconservatively moving dislocation jogs, and jog migration and climb-of-edge dislocations4 lead to a relation similar to that found experimentally at high stresses. No difference in mechanism between low and high stress levels has been clearly defined; it is questionable whether such a difference really exists. In any event, the major argument usually given in substantiation of a change in mechanism from low to high stresses is that no single relation exists for defining the stress dependence of the creep rate over wide ranges in stress. However, such a relation has been found and is of the form, dm = A" (sinh a s)n, where A" is a constant at con- stant temperature and a = ß/n. This relation agrees well with experimental results over wide ranges in stress and temperature for copper, aluminum, an A1-3.1 pct Mg alloy, and an austenitic stainless steel. STRESS DEPENDENCE OF MINIMUM CREEP RATE At low stress levels the minimum creep rate, gm, depends on the stress, 0, under conditions of constant stress creep through the relation em=Aon [1] The quantities A and n have been defined previously. In the range in which this relation applies, a linear dependence is found in a log em,-log o plot. Above the stress range of application of relation [I], the minimum creep rate increases much mar; rapidly than predicted by relation [I]. This behavior is shown in Fig. 1 for a series of creep tests on copper4 at various temperatures ranging from 673 o to 973°K. Relation [I] is satisfied at the lower stresses, although the results at 973°K are quite limited. In all cases the transition beyond the applicable range of relation [I] is a gradual one indicating no abrupt change in mechanism. For all test temperatures, values of n have been determined from the results in Fig. 1. These are reported in Table I under Alog tm/hlog o. At high stress levels the stress dependence of minimum creep rate under conditions of constant stress is given by im = A' exp [ß a] 2] All factors have been defined previously. In a log em-0 plot, relation [2] predicts a linear function. Experimentally, a pronounced deviation from the prediction of relation [2] is found at lower stresses. As the stress is lowered, the minimum creep rate decreases more rapidly than predicted by relation [2]. This shown for copper in Fig. 2. Again it is found that the transition from high to low stresses is gradual and no really sharp change is found. Values of p determined from the high stress results are given in Table I. When an Fe-2 pct A1 alloy is nitrogemted at 500ºC with a gus tnixture (NH3-H2) in which the nitrogen activity has been kept Lou] enough to avoid the formation of iron nitride, a two-phase alloy is generuled which consists of AlN particles and a ferrite phase cotaining a heavy network of dislocations. The amount of nitrogen contained in such an alloy, when equilibrated with the nitrogenating atmosphere, far exceeds both that needed to satisfy the normal solution requirements of a Fe and that needed to convert all of the aluninuwi to AlN. This excess nitrogen is accounted for as being trapped on dislocations, adsorbed at the ferrite -AlN interface, and as an en-Iuznced lattice solubility in strained ferrite. This excessive uptake of nitrogen had previously been attribuled by other investigators to the formation of a nonstoichiornetric aluminum nitride. Isotope exchange experiments revealed various amomts of exchargeable N14 present in the originally nitrided samples that could not be removed by reduction with HS at 500ºC. This exchangeable nitrogen has been identified us that bound to the AlN -ferrite interface. Estimates of inter facial areas in alloys containing -3 pct by weight of A1N are as high as 10 sq m per g of alloy. ThE first1 of this series of papers described the experiments forming the basis for the elucidation of the mechanism of the formation of aluminum nitride particles within an Fe-A1 alloy. It was found that not only are dislocations necessary for the nucleation of the AlN particles but also the nitriding reaction in turn produces a dense network of dislocations in the ferrite matrix. It was also observed that nitrogen in excess of that needed for the formation of stoichiometric AIN is taken up by the alloy without the formation of an iron nitride. The present paper is an analysis of the excess nitrogen sorbed by the nitrided Fe-A1 alloy which considers the structure generated by the formation of the aluminum nitride particles. Because of the high density of dislocations, this system has proved to be quite useful in studying nitrogen-dislocation interactions. Wriedt and Darken2 have already reported such studies in a cold-worked ferritic steel. EXPERIMENTAL Nitrogen Sorption. The specimens of this alloy were cold worked (50 pct reduction) to 0.011 in. thickness and chemically cleaned in a 2:1 concentrated phosphoric acid-50 pct hydrogen peroxide solution before nitrogenation. The flowing nitrogenating atmosphere (11 pct NH3-89 pct H2) was established before the ni- trogenating temperature was reached. The same gravimetric and gas-flow equipment described in an earlier paper1 was also used in this investigation. Changes in nitrogen concentration were followed gravimetrically when establishing the isotherms. In the isotope exchange experiments, concentration changes were followed volumetrically. In some instances chemical analyses (Kjeldahl method) were used to check for material balances in both the gravimetric and volumetric procedures. Our objective was to obtain reversible nitrogen sorption isotherms for alloys equilibrated with NH3-H2 gas mixtures over a large range of nitrogen activity* and temperature. The *Defined as equal to PN H /P3/2 ,where P corresponds to partial pressure in atmospheres. Actually the nitrogen activity, aN, in the alloy equals K PNH3 /p3/2H2, where K is the equilibrium constant for the reaction NH3 = N + 3/2H2. upper limit for nitrogen activity was below that which would produce iron nitride; for reasons which will become apparent later, most of the sorption studies were made in the temperature range between 400" and 500'C. The alloy sample studied most extensively in this investigation was given a series of successive reductions (100 pct H2) and nitrogenating treatments at 500°C to attain a stabilized structure. Presumably some dislocations were lost during these treatments. Throughout most of the sorption studies, temperature was held at ± 1°C and the gas-phase composition was held to k0.2 pet NH3. The exchange rate between the gas phase and the alloy was too slow, involving many days. To circumvent the slow exchange with the gas phase, measured amounts of N15 and N14 were introduced into the alloy by nitrogenating with an NH3-H2, mixture at 500°C containing an N15/N14 ratio of 7.76; the charged specimens were then sealed by allowing an oxide film to form over them in air, and in this final condition the specimens were subjected to 500°C in vacuum for various times during which isotope exchange was allowed to proceed within the specimen. The safety of mine workers has received more attention from both State and Federal law-making bodies than any other industry, a fact that shows clearly the hazardous nature of the industry. The last, but by no means the least, of the measures adopted for the protection of mine workers, is workmen's compensation legislation. This is proving to be a powerful instrument for greater safety in the industries, from the fact that special stress is laid not on how the accident happened or who may have been responsible for it, but on how badly the employee is hurt by it. The injured person does not have to employ lawyers to prove his case, because- the mere fact of his employment is proof of his right to compensation. The immediate effect of such legislation is the certainty confronting the mine operator that he must. pay out large sums for every accident, regardless of its cause, thus adding materially to the cost of the production of his coal. his fact furnished to the operator the strongest incentive to reduce the causes of accidents; not that the operator has ever lacked reasonable consideration for the welfare of his employees and a proper humane interest in their safety, but his engrossmentin earning his daily livelihood has been so great that he has not felt that he had the time to devote to the safety of the operation. This time he must now find because of the actual cash value of the prevention of accidents in his mines. This agency alone proved inadequate to bring about a material improvement because operators have always been willing enough to improve safety conditions when possible to do so within reasonable limits of their financial ability. The requirement in the Workmen's Compensation Laws of several of the States, that the mine operator shall insure as a guarantee of his ability to meet his compensation obligations, has furnished the needed incentive, moral and financial, necessary to the prompt and effective dissemination of a more general knowledge of the causes and

If New England were located in some distant and almost inaccessible region, there is no doubt that its mineral resources would have been ere this well developed and generally acknowledged, but laboring under the disadvantage of nearness, it has been neglected. Its surface, moreover, is not cut up by mountains and canons, and the remnants of many of the old ridges are extensively covered by glacial drift. Having for the past ten months been engaged in the development of a mineral district in Southeastern Maine, 1 would take this opportunity to lay before the Institute sketches of results, and try to give some idea of the formations as found. The Sullivan Mining District extends from the town of Franklin, through Hancock, Sullivan, and Gouldsborough, from northwest to southeast, about sixteen miles. A general idea of this locality may be gathered from the map accompanying. (Fig. 1). Diffusion between gold and indium at two temperatures below the melting point of indium (155.4oC) was investigated. The major, component of the diffusion zone was determined to be AuIn2; the other, intermediate phases in the system occur in much narrower layers In order of decreasing layer width these are: Au9In4, AuIn, Au4In. Inter diffusion coefficients of the four intermediate phases and the terminal solid solutions lie in the range of 2.4 x 10-l3 to 1.8 x 10-11 sq cm per sec. WHEN two metals which do not form a continuous series of solid solutions interdiffuse, each phase in equilibrium at the diffusion temperature should appear as a separate layer in the diffusion zone. In the Au-In system, diffusion plays a significant part in many commercial applications, particularly where indium alloys are used as solders for electrical contacts with very fine gold wire, for estab- lishing electrical contact to thin metallic films, and for mounting metal-coated piezoelectric crystals. A knowledge of the number, extent, and type of phases which form at diffusion temperatures below the melting point of indium, 155.4oC,1 and the diffusion constants for the system would be useful for these practical applications. Of more basic significance, additional information on polyphase diffusion in a system not previously investigated would be gained. The phase relationships in the Au-In system were determined primarily by Kubaschewski and Weibke1 and are based on thermal, microscopic, and X-ray analysis, Fig. 1. There are five intermediate phases in the system having approximate compositions corresponding to the formulas: Au4ln (ß)—80.0 at. pet Au; Au3In (?)— 75.0 at. pet Au; Au9In4 (d)—69.2 at. pet Au; AuIn—50.0 at. pet Au; AuIn2—33.3 at. pet Au. Solid solubility of indium in gold at 700°C is reported as 12.64 at. pet and at 406°C as 10.36 at. pet. No solid solubility of gold in indium is reported.

An industry-wide demand for bigger and more efficient trucks, with their supposed economies of scale, is well established. Some trucks have been, and often are brought "off the shelf," with the manufacturer offering only certain minor options, much as in the private automobile industry. The market is well established; there is keen competition; in recent years there have been few significant changes, and few are expected. With large trucks (100-ton-capacity and over), however, the situation is different. Here, with an individual truck costing several hundred thousand dollars, there is an ever in- creasing trend to engineer a truck for a specific application. The body will be designed and sized for the material that the truck will carry; the engine and transmission will be geared to the haul profile, and tires will be designed to suit road conditions and work requirements. Early Truck Development Haulage trucks designed expressly for open-pit mine service were introduced during the 1930's. The first models to arrive on the scene hauled about 15 tons, and easily outperformed the modified highway trucks that had been used for mine haulage up to that time.

In discussing the subject of mineral exploration, one is tempted to resort to reminiscence. I could tell of many missed opportunities, but I propose rather to outline certain changes in the methods and conditions of exploration which present new problems to the mineral explorers of today. Our subject might appropriately be called The Passing of the Old Time Prospector. The first question that presents itself is whether the job of mineral exploration is not already pretty well finished. The current market surplus of most minerals and the present overcapacity for production, with their attendant financial troubles, naturally raise the question whether the accumulation of reserves has not gone far enough for the present, and whether further exploration should not be left to some future time when consumption shall have caught up. Unquestionably we have gone far in the conquest of our physical environment, and the fear of shortage of minerals is less than formerly. For the time being there is no great need of further supplies for the world as a whole of many of the great essential minerals, coal, oil, copper, zinc, silver, and others. For a few minerals, such as gold and lead, the known future world supplies are not yet large enough. For all minerals the distribution is so unequal among the nations that exploration will continue in deficient areas in the attempt to make nations self-supporting.

MEASUREMENT of radioactivity of rocks and ores has developed into a complete method of geophysical exploration. The problem falls into three natural categories: (I) surface radiation measurement in the field and underground; (2) radioactivity logging of drillholes; and (3) laboratory analysis of samples. Portable counters are used in the field for tracing radioactive formations and for quantitative estimates of radioactive content of surface rock. Wartime advances in battery design make it possible to construct small precision counters that can be carried easily. Even the smallest conventional diamond drillholes can be logged, and actual content of the radioactive element can be measured. The exact grade of very thin active layers or veins can be estimated only approximately. Samples may be analyzed for their alpha, beta or gamma activity, and beta assaying is the best suited to rapid routine operation. Simple calibration with standard samples is sufficient for rough work, but a density correction is necessary when greater precision is required. Samples with high emanating power should be fixed and stored for three weeks to reestablish the radium-radon equilibrium prior to precision assaying. Carnotite can be fixed by sintering or molding with plastics. Among the important new developments, a low-voltage Geiger tube has been designed recently, and crystal scintillation counters hold great promise for high-efficiency gamma-ray measurement.

" If you could only get that motion into a machine," said a gentleman, as he watched the process of making a " van " on a shovel, and saw the copper roll up to the highest point, "it would beat the world for slime-dressing." This idea has led to many an effort to get into a machine that peculiar motion, called the " vanning motion;" and so cams, eccentrics, eccentric gears, levers, bell-cranks, togglejoints, links, springs, etc., have been brought into requisition, while a contribution has been laid upon all the conceivable motions, rolling, tumbling, swinging, jerking, tossing, dropping, tripping, intermittent, regular and irregular, or a combination of some of them, to which have been added percussion, concussion, and more discussion —all in a vain attempt to combine in a single machine the consecutive motions of the shovel, in washing, flowing, and tossing the van. The Patent Office Reports, and the various mills of the country, show, as a result of this, a lot of gimeracks, most of which never went beyond a first trial, finding their way to the scrap-heap. Others still running might as well be there; while some have considerable merit for dressing other and richer sands than copper. It does look tempting to see that clean edge of copper climbing up the shovel-blade; but those who have seen in it such visions of large fortunes have not considered the time it takes to make a van, compared with the small quantity treated upon the shovel; and this points to the reason for the failure of all that class of machines called " vanning machines," when used for dressing copper slimes, namely, a lack of capacity. The writer has come to this conclusion through an experience with the Rittinger side percussion-table of the most improved make, sent from Germany to the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company, and with the Ellenbecker tables, used by the same company, both of which are good types of that class of machines. In both of these machines, the tables are suspendetl by rods which allow them to swing, and they can also be adjusted for the purpose of varying the inclination of the table. In the Rittinger machine, the motion of the table is at a right angle to the flow of the slime, being produced by a wiper-cam which throws the table against a spring, which throws it quickly back against a stop, the percussion throwing up the mineral. The effect of cold-working upon electrical conductivity of copper and of copper alloys appears not to be generally known in detail. Although several papers on the subject have been presented, showing variable effects according to alloy composition, it is often assumed that the 2 to 3 per cent lowering of the conductivity of ordinary tough-pitch copper by severe cold-working is typical for copper alloys. Because of this situation it was decided to carry out the present work upon several types of copper, copper-zinc alloys over the commercial range of brasses, other binary alloys, and numerous age-hardening alloys in the quenched, and quenched and aged conditions. The large number of alloys investigated made it impossible to study every one in the detail it may have merited. Inasmuch as several interesting points that could not be satisfactorily explained came to light, further work is contemplated by the authors. It is usually considered that the normal effect of cold-work on ductile metals and unordered alloys is to decrease conductivity slightly. In alloys that are in the ordered state, as annealed or otherwise heat-treated, cold--working tends to disorder the structure, resulting in very marked lowering of conductivity. The random state of atomic arrangement produces lower con- ductivity than the ordered state for the same composition.1 Previous Work Previous work in the authors' laboratory has shown the electrical conductivity of several copper alloys to be decreased by greater amounts than might have been expected, in view of the general knowledge on the subject, when cold-worked. Guillet and Ballay2 investigated the influence of cold-work upon the resistivity of several metals and alloys, including copper and some copper alloys. The increase of resistivity due to severe working w is less than 4 per cent for all pure metals tested, while the increases for the alloys were generally higher. In the copper-zinc alloys, they found that the increase of resistance due to drawing increased with zinc content, and reported a 21.7 per cent increase of resistance for an alloy contaiiiing 67.9 per cent Cu as severely worked. Masima and Sachs3 studied the change in electrical resistance of three brass crystals when stretched in the tensile test, obtaining increases in resistance of the order of 3 per cent for 30 to 40 per cent reduction of area of the specimens. The resistance decreased again when the cold-worked crystals were subsequently annealed. Bardenheuer and Schmidt4 found that the conductivity of copper was decreased by 3 to 4 per cent when reduced 50 per cent by working. The conductivity of 72-28
