The growing popularity in the United States of the vertical-flue even was emphasized when in 1905 the United States Steel Corp. chose the Koppers oven as the type which best suited their requirements. Heinrich Koppers was born on November 23. 1872. at a small farm in Walbeck near Geldern on the lower Rhine. When young Koppers was eight years old, however the family moved away from the farm to the industrial city of Bochum in the Ruhr. Here Koppers attended public school and subsequently served an apprenticeship to a tinsmith before taking a job as a lathe operator with a local steel company. He had ambitions to be much more than a machinist, however, and used his week-ends and evenings to improve his theoretical background by taking courses at a vocational-training school in Bochum. After winning the highest honor the school could bestow (the silver Staats-medaille), Koppers went on to continue his education at the Rheinisch-Westfalische Hüttenschule in Duisberg. One of his teachers there, Fritz Wüst who later became a professor at the Technische Hochschule at Aachen, recognizing Koppers' unusual abilities, predicted for him a great future. In 1894 Heinrich Koppers joined the firm of Dr. C. Otto and Co. in Dahlhausen, and in 1899 while superintendent of the Mathias Stinnes mine he built his first battery of ovens for Hugo Stinnes, the German industrialist. Two years later he started his own organization, and in 1902 he made Essen his headquarters. It was to Essen that a group of engineers from the United States Steel Corp. went in 1906 with an invitation to Koppers to design and supervise the construction of four batteries of ovens at the Joliet works of the Illinois Steel Co. Each battery was to consist of 70 ovens. Arriving in the United States in 1907, Koppers established a branch of his firm in Joliet, and construction began. The first battery was fired on July 27, 1908. Rugged and simple, these ovens incorporated basic design features which were to make the Koppers oven and its future modifications the choice of a very large segment of the by-product coking industry of America. The 280 ovens at Joliet were 35 ft long, 8 ¾ ft in height, and tapered from 21 to 17 in. The total daily capacity of the four batteries was 2240 tons of coke. The ovens were of the new cross-regenerative type; that is, instead of longitudinal regenerators serving an entire battery, as in the older Koppers ovens, cross regenerators for each separate oven were employed. Fuel gas was supplied from the side of the battery through ducts in the brickwork known as gun flues, which reached to the center of the battery under the vertical heating-flues. Removable, ceramic gas-nozzles fitted at the top of each gun flue helped to insure good control over the distribution of the fuel gas, and uniform heating conditions were also promoted by regulating the air supply to, and the suction in, each heating flue. A different refractory w& used for each battery. One was built of American silica brick, one of American quartzite, and two of imported German quartzite. The installation at Joliet proved to be very successful, and in 1911, 490 additional' Koppers ovens were built for the Illinois Steel Co. at the great new steelworks at Gary, Ind. By 1912 the H. Koppers Co. had established its headquarters in Chicago and was rapidly extending its business to include construction for such iron and steel companies as the Woodward Iron Co. at Woodward, Ma. (80 ovens in 1912); the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Rail- road Co. at Fairfield, Ala. (280 ovens in 1912); the Inland Steel Co. at Indiana Harbor, Ind. (86 ovens during 1913 and 1914) ; and the Republic Iron and Steel Co. at Youngstown, Ohio (68 ovens in 1913). In 1914 a group of men in Pittsburgh bought a major shareholding in the H. Koppers Co., and moved the headquarters of the organization from Chicago to their own city. Under its new management the company was highly successful in obtaining a large share of the contracts for by-product installations built during World War I. Mr. Shaw's work showed the dodecyl mercaptan as a very good collector compared with other collectors on Cu-Mo ores, Mo ores, and for Au and Au-Ag ores plus Pt ores. However, as one who has had extensive experience on Cu-Mo ores, the work is not complete in making only a rougher concentrate with a collector; the work must be carried on in making a Cu-Mo separation. Did Mr. Shaw do any of this work? Before trying the dodecyl mercaptan as a Cu-Mo collector for the Cu-Mo ore it would be well to have any new work conducted knowing how the reagent acts on the Mo. Will it allow a good separation? The use of the collector at Palabora was also mentioned. From some earlier literature I thought that the reagent has been used as an oxide Cu collector after the sulfide mineral was floated out. I thought the pH at this point was about 1.5-3.0. I would like to have this point clarified.

One of the chief difficulties with which the operator of a coal washing plant has been forced to contend is the handling of the very fine coal. First he has the problem of separating the fine coal from washery water. This is usually accomplished by the use of settling cones or Dorr thickeners: in either event the separated fine coal contains a high amount (40 to 80 pct) of water and, somewhat loosely, dependent upon the size of the coal particles present, may be known as sludge or slurry. His second problem is the satisfactory further dewatering of such separated sludge and/or slurry.

DEFINITION THE term lightweight aggregate implies material which may be substituted for the usual rock, sand and gravel commonly used as the major part of concrete, but distinguished by being much lighter in weight. BACKGROUND The art of making and using concrete is old and well developed. Research and experience have pretty well determined the qualities necessary in its constituents, and time has tested theories and applications. Elaborate specifications and tests have been devised and generally adopted governing all phases of concrete work, from selection of material, through engineering design and down to mixing and placing. Standard practices have become routine to executives and laborers, and operations have been simplified and costs lowered. Though many lightweight aggregates meet the basic specifications necessary for usefulness, their physical qualities are so different that they frequently will not pass standard tests, and some of them cannot be mixed and placed with the usual formulas for water and slump. As a rule their use produces a concrete with a lower modulus of elasticity which requires design change, and being produced in much smaller quantities than ordinary aggregate, production costs are higher. This latter works in a vicious circle to restrict their use and maintain prices that are not competitive, except as against each other. INCREASED DEMAND In spite of such handicaps consumption has grown steadily for the past two decades and is apparently growing even faster today. It is evident that lightweight concrete must have better qualities, and be sufficiently better to overcome the higher cost and the other difficulties and disadvantages pertinent to the use of a new and different material in an old industry. Hence the study of its main ingredient should be of interest to all engineers. Our group has a double interest in the subject since most of the materials which have been used as sources of lightweight aggregate are either mined, or are by-products of mining operations. We are directly interested in their production as well as their use, and since available supplies of materials suitable are limited, the increasing use, and rising demand, make the discovery of new sources, or the development of processes to adapt other natural materials to this use, a promising field; and one in which our profession should take an active part. RECENT DEVELOPMENT Descriptions of ancient work contain references to the use of spalls of tuffs or pumice in concrete masonry, but it is only since the nineteen twenties that serious attempts have been made to produce and market lightweight aggregates. The following paper, submitted by the Russian petroleum authorities, was secured through the courtesy of G. V. Ackerman, Vice President of Amtorg Trading Corporation, and N. V. Vannikoff, Representative in the U.S.A. of the United Oil and Gas Industries of the U.S.S.R. It gives an excellent view of the Russian petroleum industry as seen through Russian eyes. Noteworthy is the tremendous area over which the Russians are searching for petroleum, for this paper refers to such far-flung areas as the Arctic Tamir Peninsula, Kamchatka and Sakhalin on the Pacific, Lake Baikal in Central Siberia, the great new discovery at Neftadag in the plains of West Turkestan, and the oil of the Ferghana oasis, where the derricks look out over to the mosques of Kokand. Of interest also is the new pipe line to supply the industrial centers of Ukraine grouped around the great hydroelectric plant built at Dneprotroy on the falls of the Dnieper. The technical achievements have been noteworthy and we must pause to consider the scope of the undertakings being carried forward. Russia is at the worst a good second to the United States in petroleum reserves and for a long time to come will be a most important factor in the petroleum markets of the world. Her story should be of interest to everyone in the industry. The First Five Year Plan The first Five Year Plan, covering the period 1928-29 to 1932, accomplished the task of transforming the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics from an agricultural, backward land into a powerful independent industrial country, with an advanced technological foundation of its own for finally achieving the social reconstruction of the entire national economy. Along with the gigantic forward 'strides in industry and transportation, radical changes took place in agriculture. The creation of more than 5000 great state farms and of more than 200,000 collective farms serviced by a widespread network of machine-tractor stations has brought the U.S.S.R. to the fore as the largest agricultural country in the world. Imports of tractors and other agricultural machinery in the initial years of the Five Year Plan and the intensive output of this equipment by the great plants of the U.S.S.R. in the latter years of the plan have brought about the mechanization of agriculture in the Soviet Union. Exploration activities were maintained at a high level throughout 1966. Numerous significant discoveries and developments in which geologists played an important part were announced. Although the complete results of exploration activities carried out during the year by private companies have not been announced, the following are among the more important developments that have been made public knowledge. In the western states, exploration for practically all of the metals continued at a high rate. Substantially increased interest in uranium occurred this year, and it is felt by many that a real boom in the demand for uranium may come about in the near future. The reasons have been the more rapid acceptance of atomic power than had been anticipated, and that uranium producers can now sell their product to private interests and even foreign countries. A tremendous demand for uranium is anticipated by many, and this has rekindled exploration activity. On the Colorado Plateau, in Wyoming, and in the area around Grants, N. M., a number of companies have undertaken uranium exploration programs, among which are Kerr-McGee, Homestake, Anaconda and Utah Construction. A new uranium orebody in Texas was brought into production early in 1966 by Susquehanna Western.

Two methods for the rapid valuation of oil properties are in common use. The one best known and most widely used is the "per barrel" value, based on the present daily production of the well, without regard to its past performance or the history of the sand or pool from which it produces. The second method is the "time to pay out," or the lengt of time required for a well to place itself upon the credit side of the ledger, from which time the returns from its production (less the operating expenses) will be clear profit. The time basis for valuation is also commonly used in the appraisal of an undeveloped lease. In most oil fields, it is not thought good business to invest in production that will not pay out in at least 4 to 5 years. Nearly all buyers (except in certain regions of very persistent production like the deep-sand territory of the Appalachian field) expect wells to pay out in considerably less time than this. Like the barrel-per-day price, the time necessary for a well to pay out has been determined for each field, so that one frequently hears a field or district referred to as having a certain time to pay out. This is considered the norm for that field or district and the buyer and seller base their value, to greater or less extent, on their belief in the accuracy of this time. The writer long ago became convinced of the inaccuracy of the barrel-per-day method, except when greatly modified for local conditions, such as the age of the wells, their economic limit, operating conditions in the field, the future price of oil, and the persistence of the sand as a producer. When so modified, this method becomes more of an analytic or predicted probable-yield valuation. While the appraiser may not go through each step in a valuation based on future returnable revenue, his knowledge of the field and the local conditions surrounding his leases make it possible for him to estimate a fair sales value that, in many cases, will be a close approximation to the truth. This is quite different from she commonly understood barrel-per-day value, in that the conditions turrounding the sale of one lease or property at a fair market value may

The paper gives an account of the factors influencing the stability of coal mining tunnels and goes on to examine various bases of support and lining design of such tunnels in relation to geological and mining conditions. The different types of coal mining tunnels are compared and comments made regarding the factors influencing their choice and basic design features. Foremost amongst design considerations is the design method and special thought has been given to the validity of different formulae as related particularly to UK Carboniferous geological conditions. Emphasis is placed on the role of the stress field in relation to tunnel stability. Shape of mining tunnel has been investigated and conclusions drawn regarding the merits of different commonly excavated geometries from a stability point of view. Detailed design aspects pertaining to determination of tunnel lining strength and resulting stability are critically examined and current design methods are compared. Data from UK mining tunnels are included as the basis for comparison of these design methods.

This paper presents an evaluation of compressibility factor data and a discussion of their application to the estimation of gas reserves. A correlation is presented which provides compressibility factors for use in both two-phase and single-phase hydrocarbon systems. Accuracies comparable to those obtained previously for single-phase systems only can be expected. A simple means of predicting the presence or absence of a liquid phase in a condensate system of known composition is illustrated. The correlation is based on 1,030 compressibility determinations from 21 hydrocarbon samples taken from eight oil fields. Of the data used, 75 per cent were from California, 15 per cent were from the Mid-Continent area, and 10 per cent were from South America. The average numerical deviation of the experimental data from this compressibility chart is 1.22 per cent. Charts and tables are included and discussed which illustrate the errors involved through the misuse or nonuse of compressibility factors in estimates of gas-in-place. INTRODUCTION The compressibility factor is a coefficient which expresses the deviation of a gas of given composition from the Perfect Gas Laws. A factor such as this is necessary in any calculation involving volumes of gaseous mixtures, and finds extensive application in the estimation of natural gas and condensate reserves. It is used in the decline curve, the volumetric, and the material balance methods of gas reserves estimation. The behavior of gases at high pressures has been investigated extensively in recent years and considerable data have been assembled on the compressibility characteristics of a number of gases. Notable among the investigators of high pressure gas relationships are Kvalnes and Caddya, Kay" Sage and Laceys, and Brown, Standing" and Katz4. Other contributors are Smith and Watson, Roland and Kaveler', and Stevens and Vance". The data on compressibility factors assembled by these investigators have been presented and correlated in numerous ways; particularly noteworthy is the method first presented by Kay5 which relates compressibility factor "Z" to pseudo-reduced temperature and Pseudo-reduced pressure. Other investigators have used this empirical relationship successfully and numerous charts covering a large number of gases have been constructed on this basis. It is the purpose of this paper to evaluate compressibility factor data and to illustrate the importance of their proper use in the estimation of gas-in-place for both gas and condensate reservoirs. EVALUATION OF COMPRESSIBILITY FACTOR DATA The compressibility chart presented by Standing, Katz, Brown and Holcomb in 1941 is probably the most recent and reliable chart for natural gases. The reliability of the Katz chart has been investigated by the writers for a fairly large number of gases (single-phase) in the pressure range from 500 to 10,000 psia and temperature range from 80 to 400°F. A summary of this comparison is presented in Table I. The numerical average deviation of the chart compressibility factors from the experimental compressibility factors is 1.05 per cent, and the algebraic deviation is -0.28 per cent. The Katz correlation appears to be quite accurate for single-phase hydrocarbon systems. It was based on single-phase systems and does not necessarily provide a means of accurately predicting the behavior of two-phase systems which might be encountered in condensate work. Data published recently by Sage and Oldsl' have enlarged the knowledge of phase behavior in condensate systems by covering extensively the Compressibilities of systems in the two-phase as well as single-phase regions for a wide range of temperatures, pressures and gas-oil ratios. An evaluation of these data indicates that conditions can arise, especially in condensate systems having fairly low gas-oil ratios, in which two phases occur and the usual gaseous compressibility factors do not accurately apply. The measured PVT data of Sage and Olds covering two-phase systems have been correlated with additional such data from the Mid-Continent area and South America; these are presented in Fig. 1. It seems a common opinion among metallographists that all light-gray inclusions seen with the microscope in polished sections of steel are manganese sulphide. Examples of this belief are continually appearing, as for instance in the paper by Dr. Henry Fay on manganese sulphide as a source of danger in steel railsll and in Lieutenant-Commander Cook's paper on Metallography of Steel for U. S. Naval Ordnance.² Slate- colored inclusions are considered to be silicates, and dove-gray inclusions, manganese sulphide. To show the danger in the latter unqualified assumption, it should be sufficient to examine the edge of any piece of steel that is covered with a fairly thick scale, and that has been polished in such a way as to prevent the scale from breaking away entirely below the polished surface. In December, 1879, I was sent to the Bassic mine of Colorado and then to Lone mountain, near Silver City, N. M., and to various copper-camps in Arizona. I staged from Glorietta, N. M., to Tucson, Ariz., stopping at Silver City to see the Cosette mine. This mine led to the opening of the Lake Valley mines, and is a deposit of similar formation. New Year's day, 1880, found me crossing the Rio Grande above the Jornado del Muerto. At Aleman, Victorio's band crossecl four hours ahead of us. We picked up four wounded soldiers to take to Fort Bayard, for during the day the colored troops under General Hatch had been driving the Indians back through the San Andreas mountains. The traveler of to-day little realizes the dangers of these trips, when over very rough roads we made about 100 miles in a day and a night. I subsequently made this trip six times, up to 1882, and each time I missed an Indian attack by from one to four days. The day I arrived at Silver City news had come of the massacre of 75 women and children at the San Francisco ranch. The fighting-men of' Silver City had gone to rescue others. I was the only passenger from Socorro, N. M., until we picked up the soldiers. The next day we came suddenly on 5 of Victorio's band, but we had picked up several miners, so our stage bristled with guns, and we mere let alone. At or near my stone quarry, 6 miles from Socorro, 9 men, were killed by the band that, a day or two after, killed George. Daly, Lieutenant White, and all their men. During this raid, our miners and women at the mine slept in the tunnel. At the Cosette mine I had 35 men at work. These Indian raids had

HARDENING and embrittlement of the ferritic chromium stainless steels at temperatures near 885 °F have been known for a long time.' However, no satisfactory explanation has been given. Both ordering and precipitation hardening have been suggested. Fisher, Dulis, and Carroll2 discovered a chromium-rich body-centered-cubic precipitate in embrittled alloys. Subsequently, Williams' and Wright4 also have found evidence of this body-centered-cubic constituent. William's hardness, electrical resistance, and magnetic studies led to his proposal of a new constitutional diagram for the Fe-Cr alloys. The new feature of this diagram is the eutec-toidal decomposition, below about 970°F, of the s phase into two stable body-centered-cubic solid solutions, one rich in iron and the other rich in chromium. An observation of Heger5 that the amount of s phase has increased and the amount of chromium-rich body-centered-cubic phase decreased in the interval 5000 to 32,600 hr at 900°F, even though the alloy increased in hardness, casts some doubt on this diagram. If precipitation hardening causes the embrittlement, the precipitate probably is always coherent with the matrix, since no evidence of overaging has been reported. It cannot be stated positively, however, that Fisher's body-centered-cubic constituent is the embrittling phase. According to Preston's data,6 such a chromium-rich phase should have a parameter less than about 0.5 pct larger than that of the iron-rich matrix lattice. Moreover, the constitutional relationships whereby Fisher's constituent forms, and whether it is stable, metastable, or a transition phase, are not yet completely clear. The recent studies of Wright4 and of Lommel,7 as well as the earlier studies of Becket8 and of Hochmann,9 have shown that 885°F hardening occurs in relatively pure Fe-Cr alloys. No evidence of its occurrence or absence in chromium itself has been reported. The rate of hardening in high purity alloys seems appreciably slower than that in alloys containing larger amounts of impurities (chiefly carbon and nitrogen). This may be due merely to the absence of hardening and straining effects from precipitated carbides and/or nitrides. These observations on high purity alloys make it seem unlikely that 885 °F hardening is caused by a constituent containing other than iron and chromium atoms, e.g., carbides and/or nitrides. Wright,4 Lommel,7 and Lena and Hawkes10 emonstrated the accelerating effects of a finely dispersed precipitate of (probably) chromium nitride on the hardening reaction. This appears to be evidence that lattice straining increases the rate of nucleation of the hardening constituent. Some new observations on 885°F hardening are reported here. They show an effect of preheat treatment that should contribute to a better understanding of the 885°F hardening phenomenon. They also clarify a discrepancy which exists in the literature. Some investigators have reported most rapid hardening at 885", whereas others have reported it at 930°F. The present work also shows that 885°F hardening does not occur in electrolytic chromium, and that any long range ordering type of reaction affecting any sizeable part of the volume is unlikely. Materials Studied Table I shows the currlposition of the alloys used in this investigation. In these alloys carbon and nitrogen are present in roughly similar amounts. Presumably both elements precipitate, as carbides and/or nitrides, during the heat treatments given.

During 1939 oil production experienced a new and important increase in Argentina in the productive areas of Comodoro Rivadavia (Territory of Chubut), Plaza Huincul (Territory of Neuquén), and those of the. Province of Mendoza. Production in the Standard Oil Company's field in the Province of Salta declined, but that of the Government oil fields in that province inereased 62.5 per cent.
