The following petition for amendment of the constitutional provisions relating to qualifications for membership in the Institute, signed by 75 members, of whom 27 are members of the Committee on Increase of Membership, was received by the Board of Directors, was printed on the program of the New York Meeting sent to all members early in January, and is now being voted upon by the membership: In accordance with the terms f Article X, we hereby propose the following amendment to the Constitution, Article II, Section 2: Members shall comprise all those persons who on the third Monday of February, 1918, were members of the Institute, and in addition thereto, all those thereafter, elected or transferred into the, class of Members. A person to he eligible for election or transfer into the class of Members must he at least 27 years of age and must have had at least six years' employment in the practice of engineering, mining, geology, metallurgy or chemistry, during at least three years of which he must have held positions of responsibility in one or more of these fields. Graduation from the scientific course of a college, approved by the Committee on Membership, shall be considered equivalent to two years' employment, as required in the previous sentence.

SOME form of longwall mining is generally used in Continental Europe; also in Great Britain where the coal is weak and friable, or the coal bed provides material for pack walls and filling, or where the bottom is soft and squeezes up easily, or the roof is pliable, or the bed is thin and brushing provides building material, or the thick multiple seams are mined in layers, such as the 24-ft. seam at Weymss, Scotland or the 10-yd. pitching bed near Coventry, England. Pillar methods have been retained in British fields where the coal beds are from 5 to 9 ft. (1.5 to 2.7 m.) thick, and free from thick partings or binders or without draw slate, which would provide waste rock for pack walls, or where the roof is hard and requires shooting to bring down and also the bottom or floor is comparatively hard. The room-and-pillar system, by which probably 95 per cent., of the coal of the United States is produced, is now found in only a few mines in Wales, where it is known as the pillar. and .(single) stall method. The American room-and-pillar system is not equivalent to the bord-and-pillar or stoop-and-room system. The essential difference between the bord-and-pillar and the average American room-and-pillar system is probably due to natural conditions. The majority of the coal mines in the United States have a depth of less than 700 ft. (213.m.). The bulk of the coal mined in Europe comes from a depth of more than 1200, ft., while the deepest mines in Great Britain, Belgium, and France reach 3500 to 4000 ft. In deep workings wide spans are impracticable, even with the use of abundant timber; accordingly, as the mines in the United States become deeper the rooms will become narrower and the pillars thicker, and the bulk of the coal will be extracted on the retreat. It is generally conceded, without reference to the cost of production, that the larger the pillars left on the first mining, the more thoroughly can the, coal be extracted. On the assumption that stress or strain relaxation occurs as the result of a thermally activated process, equations are derived relating to tensile experiments that give the strain as a function of the time under the condition of constant stress, and the stress as a function of the time for constant strain. It is demonstrated that if the strain-rate equation i = previously proPosed by Kuhlmann., is used as a starting point, then the relaxation of strain at constant stress may be expressed by the equation c = (-RT/(Y) 1tz tanh (t + is the strain capable of being relaxed at any given instant. Similarly, it is shown that the relaxation of stress at constant strain may be given by a = (-RT/B) In tanh (t + t0)/27, where a is the instantaneois value of the relaxable stress. The fact that these relationships reduce to well-known empirical equations at both large and small values of the stress Or strain is also shozcn. The present theory is shown to agree well with experimental data obtained from tensile elastic aftereffect experiments on a zirconium specimen prestrained at 77 k as to make it strongly anelastic. It is also demonstrated that elastic aftereffect data obtained using torsional specimens ?,Lay agree reasonably well with the equation derived for the case of tension. RELAXATION experiments are often employed as a means of studying metallic deformation mechanisms.' The simplest and most commonly employed techniques involve stress relaxation at constant strain and strain relaxation at constant stress. In general, however, investigations of this nature have been seriously handicapped in the past by a lack of suitable equations giving the time dependence of the relaxing variable over an interval that extends from small strains up into the region where internal-friction experiments become strain-amplitude dependent. This paper presents a derivation of such a set of equations for the case where the time-dependent part of the strain is anelastic or recoverable and the specimens are loaded in simple tension. The relaxation of strain under the condition of constant stress will be considered first. Let us assume that strain relaxation occurs as the result of a reversible thermally activated process that occurs at a number of relaxation centers lying in an elastic matrix. Then, following Kuhlmann,2 we may express the rate of strain relaxation as follows: where C is the strain rate, AFx the free energy of activation of the process controlling strain relaxation, a, the effective or average resolved stress at the relaxation centers, u an activation volume, R the universal gas constant, T the absolute temperature, > a factor with dimensions of a volume that accounts for the strain contribution of a successful operation of a unit process, N the number of relaxation centers per unit volume, and v the Debye frequency. The first term on the right of Eq. [I] represents a strain rate in the direction favored by the stress, while the second term represents the rate in the opposite direction. It is implied in Eq. [I.] that both F and v are symmetrical with respect to the two basic directions of operation of a relaxation process. Eq. [I] may also be written where and S and Q are the activation entropy and activation energy, respectively, of the relaxation process. In the following, A will be considered a constant. This is compatible with a set of experimental conditions where the relaxation rate is controlled by a single basic reversible process in which it may be assumed that the temperature dependence of the product ?Nv is negligible in comparison with the temperature variation of the exponential term. It is also implied that v, 7, and N do not depend strongly on a, . In deriving a relationship for the strain as a function of the time from her equation, equivalent to Eq. [2], Kuhlmann2 chose to consider only the limiting cases where the time was either very small or very large. It will now be shown that it is possible to integrate Eq. [2] to obtain a single equation valid over a wide range of strains if the concept of relaxable strain is introduced. The use of this quantity, which is the difference between the instantaneous value of the strain and the value of the strain at complete relaxation, represents the primary point of departure of the present theory from that of earlier workers. Let us express the effective stress at the relaxation centers in terms of strain. THE hydrometallurgy of special high-grade zinc as practiced by the Sullivan Mining Co. at its electrolytic zinc plant, Kellogg, Idaho, involves an important filtration step immediately following the leaching process. By means of the filtration the heavy zinc sulphate solution is separated from the residual products which remain after the zinc calcine has been dissolved in the sulphuric acid electrolyte. Because this plant uses the so-called high-acid, high-density process' for the production of First, the strength of the electrolyte (270g H,SO, per liter) results in a saturated zinc sulphate solution, having a specific gravity of 1.510 to 1.540, which must be kept warm during filtration because of its property of "seeding out" small crystals if allowed to drop much below 60°C. Second, the action of the "high" acid on zinc calcine under the temperature conditions of the leach (80" to 102 "C), although favorable to good zinc extraction, causes a considerable quantity of iron to be dissolved (8 to 18. g per liter) along with variable quantities of alumina and silica, depending on the grade and type of original zinc concentrates roasted. These three, iron, alumina, and silica, are almost completely precipitated during the neutralization of the leach (only a few. milligrams per liter of each remain in solution), so that the resulting pulp, instead of being a granular, sand-like product having a particle-size distribution dependent on the fineness of the zinc calcines leached, is in reality a slimy, chemical precipitate whose filtration characteristics constantly change depending on the amounts of iron silica, and other impurities, which are dissolved and reprecipi-tated. Third, the combination of supersaturated solution of high specific gravity plus a dense, semi-gelatinous residue creates a difficult washing problem requiring a positive displacement wash to liberate the zinc sulphate entrapped in the pulp. In a closed-cycle hydrometallurgical operation, such as practiced in this plant, the extent of washing is determined by the volum,e limitations imposed on the intermediate wash waters by the amount of "fresh" (or process) water which may be added. The volume of fresh water used for makeup purposes is limited to the amount which is lost during the closed cycle by evaporation in the leach, sulphate content of the calcines leached, moisture content of the residue, and spillage. The Burt filter as modified and improved by the Sullivan Mining Co. has successfully met and overcome these difficulties under a variety of zinc plant operating conditions since 1928. It might have many interesting applications to metallurgical fields other than that of electrolytic zinc, and its possible usefulness to hydrometallurgists in general warrants its description and discussion. The Burt filter is so named from its inventor who originated it in Mexico for pulp filtration in the cyanide process for gold and silver ores. While retaining the basic principle of Burt's earlier revolving pressure-type filter with internal filtration media, a number of modifications and improvements have been made in Sullivan Mining Co.'s installation. The Burt filter may be classified as a batch-type pressure filter in contradistinction to either the conventional vacuum-type filter, which depends on atmospheric pressure to force solution through a cloth medium, or to the filter-press, which employs whatever pressure is imparted by the pump delivering the liquid being filtered. The Burt consists essentially of a hollow steel cylinder about 40 ft long, 5 ft in diameter, resting horizontally, and capable of rotation about its long axis. It is supported on one end by a hollow trunnion and near the other end by a riding-ring and roller combination. The cylinder is lined with filter units each fastened against the inside of the shell and parallel to the long axis so as to form a hollow cavity into which pulp may be charged. A specific amount of pulp is admitted to the filter and a unique valving arrangement prevents the loss of pulp while air pressure forces the solution through a canvas medium to the discharge port of each filter unit. The residue is left on the surface of the canvas inside the cavity. The remainder of the filter cycle is concerned with washing the residue free of zinc sulphate, discharging it from the Burt, and preparing the filter for the next charge. A more detailed description of Burt filter construction, a typical filter cycle, and its operating characteristics when employed on material encountered in this plant will be given in that order. Description of the Filter: Fig. 1 shows a side elevation view of a filter with riveted shell construction. Since this drawing was made shells have been fabricated by welding, instead of riveting, with complete success. Shells are lagged on the outside to retain heat. Fig. 1 shows a side elevation and plan view of a Burt filter in operating position. The 1/2-in. steel shells are lined with 3/16-in. copper sheet as protection against the corrosive action of the solution (containing about 500 mg Cu per liter) on iron, and the copper is given a thin protective coating of plastic-base paint. Many direct processes have been proposed for the treatment of oxidized ores of copper by reducing the copper oxide to the metallic state, and by separating it from its impurities by a subsequent fusion. The radical objection common to all the methods which have come to my notice, except those in which sulphur plays the prominent part, is that the very deoxidizing agent which effects the reduction of the copper oxide, inevitably reduces at the same time a very considerable part, if not the whole, of the iron which almost invariably accompanies copper in its ores. The result is that, when the ore is subsequently fused, a very great quantity of the already reduced iron separates from the slag along with the copper, alloying with it, and necessitating costly subsequent operations for its separation. Thus, at Perm, in the Urals," the product of the fusion of ferrnginous copper oxides is a mixture of one hundred and fifty-tive parts of highly cupriferous pig iron with two hundred and fire parts of very impure and ferruginous black copper, containing Pome 10 per cent. of' carbon and iron, though free from sulphur, and of course very difficult to refine. If, in order to avoid this reduction of iron to the metallic state, the reducing action be made feebler, it inevitably results that a considerable part of the copper as well escapes deoxidation; and, consequently, the slags are so rich that it becomes necessary to treat them subsequently in order to recover the copper which they contain. Thus,. in treating native copper, at Lake Superior, where the reducing action is purposely made feeble in order to prevent the deoxidation of the iron, the slags from the first fusion of the ore carry so much copper as to render it imperative to treat them again, which is done in a cupola. And yet, in spite of so far weakening the reducing action as to cause a notable slagging of the copper, a very considerable reduction of iron actually takes place. These are the two dangers which threaten the smelter of oxidized copper ores. If he wishes to avoid slagging his copper, he must have so strong a deoxidizing action as to reduce a great deal of his

For perhaps one hundred years scientists have been engaged in attempts at devising a satisfactory method of classification of coal. During this time many charts, tables and graphs have been proposed, some of which have had considerable merit, but no one system has been found to be applicable to all ranks of coal, nor has any one system received general acceptance. In many of the proposals, water eliminated between room temperature and 105" C. has been regarded as extraneous matter and calculations have been made to the air-dry or water-free basis. Such methods of calculation do not lend themselves to satisfactory grouping of the high-moisture coals.1, 2 A consideration not only of the properties of the high-moisture coals and their behavior on drying but of the generally accepted ideas of the coalification process and the role of water in this process indicates that water is an essential constituent of all coals and therefore should not be neglected. For example, in such low-rank coals as the lignites of the Northern Great Plains' deposits the inherent moisture of the lignite as mined plays a very important part in the physical properties thereof. Freshly mined lignite contains upwards of 30 per cent water and is extremely tough and resistant to shock. Upon exposure to the atmosphere, the lump loses part of its moisture and checks and splits, leaving a friable and broken up residue. So far as we have been able to determine, water is the only thing lost in this process and we are forced to the conclusion that moisture plays an extremely important part in the structural properties of the original lignite. With reference to the coalification process, Mack and Hulett3 pointed out in 1917 the important part that water played therein. They observed that water cannot be removed from peat or coal by pressure alone, but only as the result of chemical reaction, and suggested that peat in its early stages may be largely a hydrosol. Slow chemical changes occur over a long period of time until finally the mass becomes more largely a hydrogel. These views are substantiated to some extent by the experi-

A simplified model for the theory of reaction rates near equilibrium has been applied to the reduction of wustite. A linear relationship between the net rate of reaction and the Gibbs free-energy change, ?F, is predicted. The reduction of wustite in H2 -H2O gas mixtures was studied with a microbalance technique at temperatures from 850° to 950 °C. The predicted model was found to be valid to -?F/RT = 0.1 or approximately -200 cal per mole away from equilibrium. ThE theory of reaction rates near equilibrium has been developed by a number of authors. Prigogine, Outer, and Herbo1 have studied the catalytic hydrogena tion of benzene in an attempt to deduce some intrinsic connection between reaction rates near equilibrium and thermodynamics. Manes, Hofer, and weller2 have derived more general expressions for reaction rates near equilibrium from classical thermodynamics. Hollingsworth3,4 has commented briefly on the work of Manes et al. Benson5 has summarized in a general way the results of the earlier contributions. It is the purpose of this paper to apply the theory of reaction rates near equilibrium specifically to the reduction of wustite in H2-H2O gas mixtures. The basic premise is that the reduction of wustite proceeds by a surface reaction, rather than by solid-state diffusion ,or gaseous diffusion. Richardson and Dancy6 and Gellner and Richardson7 have suggested that the reduction of wustite may be governed by iron diffusion in wustite. Mckewan8-11 has proposed that reduced iron layers on various oxides are sufficiently porous to offer a negligible impedance to the reducing gas. The linear motion of interfaces reported by McKewan and discussed by Themelis and Gauvin12 indicates the lack of diffusive control during reduction. The reduction studies of magnetite reported by Quets, Wadsworth, and Lewis13 give additional evidence that reduction rates are linear when the reaction products are porous and nonprotective. The interpretation of measurements reported in this paper is predicated upon a surface-controlled reduction reaction, at least in the earliest stages of reduction when the reduced iron layer is thin.

The purpose of this study was to develop a method for predicting the time delay created by metering a fluid through an annular restriction with translational motion of the boundaries. This time delay is utilized to control the opening of valves in various down-hole oilfield tools and forms the basis for the "hydraulic jar". The hydraulic jar is used to give upward impact forces to tubing or other tools that become lodged down-hole. The design of these jars has primarily been by trial and error; varying the clearances, fluid viscosities and dimensions of the jar until a satisfactory time delay was achieved. Obviously, a better understanding of the fluid flow characteristics is required to produce designs that are satisfactory and to eliminate the trial-and-error approach. Previous studies of flow in annular spaces were based on constant length of the annular restriction. Any motion of the boundaries of the annular space was confined to a rotational motion, like that encountered in journal bearing design. Consideration of the effect of translational motion of one boundary with respect to the other was necessary in applying this previous work to a time delay device. A prediction method was developed that takes into account this relative translational motion. Equations were developed to predict the relative velocity, the flow rate, and the time delay in a concentric annular space. The effect of eccentricity also was included. Experimental data were obtained and closely correlated with the prediction method. This correlation is presented graphically in terms of predicted and actual relative velocities for various annular clearances and pressure drops. This extension provides design equations which predict the performance of the hydraulic jar, thereby eliminating trial-and-error solutions and reducing the development time required for satisfactory designs. INTRODUCTION The design of down-hole oilfield tools which use hydraulic delay systems based on flow through annular orifices with relative motion of the boundaries is usually a trial-and-error process. The annular clearances, fluid viscosities and dimensions of the mechanisms were varied until satisfactory delay times were obtained. The development of these tools has been expensive, and a better understanding of the characteristics of annular flow with relative motion of the boundaries could result in superior and less expensive designs. The purpose of this investigation was to provide a method of predicting the performance of down-hole tools which use annular flow and, in particular, the performance of a down-hole tool known as the "hydraulic jar". The hydraulic jar is used to free pipe, packers and other tools that become lodged down-hole. The jar, located in the tubing string between the surface and the object which is stuck, releases the object though the repeated application of upward impact blows. The jar is basically a slip joint that is restrained in a collapsed condition until the desired tubing tension has been developed. The slip joint is then released and accelerates rapidly until it shoulders, delivering an impact blow or jar to the object. The delay obtained by metering the fluid through the annulus formed by the jar valve and housing provides the time delay necessary to stretch and apply tension to the tubing or pipe. Fig. 1A gives a schematic diagram of the hydraulic jar and brief details of its operation. The metering of the hydraulic jar begins when the tension force being applied to the jar by the pipe creates a pressure differential across the valve that is approximately equal to the force divided by the displacement area of the valve. Tungsten single-crystal specimens of various orientations were deformed in tension at room temperature. Slip traces indicated both (112)(111) and (110) (111) slip; however, about 10 pct plastic dejormation was required bejore these traces could he seen. Resolzled shear-stress considerations indicated that at least some of the particular systems observed were not those on which slip initiated hut were secondary systems. This is highly probable, considering the high plastic strains involved. Analysis of the stress data with respect to possible slip systems indicated that slip must have been initiated at stresses below the proportional-limit stresses measured. ALTHOUGH there is general agreement that slip deformation in fcc and hep metals takes place on the plane of close packing and in the direction of close packing, there is no such agreement for slip in bcc metals. It is generally agreed that the close-packed direction (111) is the slip direction, but investigations have led to conflicting descriptions of the slip plane. As Hoke and Maddin1 point out, there are essentially four points of view. 1) Deformation in bcc metals is composite shear on (112) and (110) planes or on nonparallel (110) planes, and any apparent slip on other planes can be accounted for completely by slip on these planes. Chen and Maddin have reported this to be the possible case for molybdenum." 2) Slip occurs in the (111) direction and is limited to {110), {112), and (123) planes (the three closest packed planes of the lattice). 3) Slip occurs in a (111) direction, but not necessarily on planes of close packing (banal slip). 4) Slip occurs in those directions and on those planes for which ß, the ratio of Burgers vector to interplanar spacing, is a minimum. The slip systems of the bcc metal tungsten have never been fully determined, although several investigators have reported pertinent results.3"7 The present work was initiated to determine the active slip systems in tungsten at room temperature, the critical resolved shear stresses associ- ated with these systems, and the orientation dependency of operative systems. These features of tungsten deformation at room temperature have never been reported in the literature. The authors find this somewhat surprising, particularly in view of the availability of tungsten single crystals since the advent of electron-beam zone-melting techniques and the widespread interest in refractory metals. It would seem apparent that such work has been attempted but the results have not been reported, possibly due to the conflict with deformation theory. The results of the present work conflict with any straightforward description of deformation based on the proposed explanations of slip in bcc metals. Although these conflicts have not been resolved, a presentation of the problem seems in order and should be of value to others working in this field. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE Single-crystal tungsten rods of 1/8-in. diameter were grown from undoped commercial rod by one-pass electron-beam zone melting in apparatus previously described by witzke.8 Representative analyses of the rod before and after melting are given in Table I. There was no detectable zoning of impurities during melting. Buttonhead tensile specimens, as shown in Fig. 1, were machined from single crystals. Two flats 90 deg apart were ground in the gage length of each specimen. These flat surfaces facilitated the analysis of slip traces. No attempt was made to position these flats with respect to the crystal orientation. The worked surface layer of the machined specimens was removed by electrolytic polishing in a NaOH solution. Tensile-axis orientations were determined by standard Laue back-reflection techniques. The sharpness of the Laue spots indicated that the crystals were free of strain.

An equation is derived describing fragment size for single fracture of brittle solids. It contains the equations of earlier workers as special or approximate cases and, in addition, is capable of describing coarse distributions in which a few large particles are produced on fracture. The equation can be fitted well to single fracture experiments where over-breakage is avoided. In 1956 Broadbent and callcottl described a method of analyzing the unit operation of grinding, applicable to homogeneous breakage of brittle materials. In essence, the grinding process was split into two parts: 1) the fractional amount of a given size which is selected for grinding per unit time, 2) the size-weight distribution of the fragments produced by breakage of this certain size (primary breakage distribution function). The theory was formulated using matrix algebra. They attempted an experimental verification of the theory using an assumed primary breakage distribution but the results were not very satisfactory. Austin and Gardner2 showed that this assumed distribution was widely different from experimental values and that it led to the poor agreement of predicted size-weight distributions with experiment found by Broadbent and Callcott. In addition, Austin and Gardner2,3,4 reformulated the original approach in terms of differential equations of grinding and demonstrated that the approach led to a very satisfactory description of the grinding process, providing that the descriptive parameters were measured experimentally. Recent work5 has substantiated these findings and the distribution functions of several materials ground under different conditions in different mills have been determined experimentally. The new, internationally-owned Savage River Mines iron ore mining, concentrating and pelletizing project, built and operated by Pickands Mather & Co. International, was dedicated March 6 at Port Latta, Tasmania, Australia. Construction of the $79 million project began in 1965 and involved an open pit mine and concentrating plant plus a complete town for about 350 employees at Savage River; a 53-mile pipeline to transport the concentrates; a pelletizing plant and shipping facilities at Port Latta, which is on Bass Strait separating Tasmania from the Australian mainland. The project has a rated capacity of 2.25 million Ltpy of high-grade magnetite pellets, which will be sold to five Japanese steel companies under 20-year contracts. The open pit mine is located in the central portion of the Savage River deposits. Mining equipment, capable of moving 10 million tpy of ore and overburden, consists of four 6-cu yd electric shovels and 12 50-ton trucks. The concentrating plant, with a design capacity of 5 million tpy of ore, will use magnetic separators to upgrade the ore, which averages 38% iron, to a concentrate averaging 67% iron.

AMONG the main interesting developments in the coal market have been the changes that have taken place between the consumer groups. Important signs of these changes began to appear many years ago, but in a modest way, and were apparent only to the few fuel experts making broad statistical determinations. It is doubtful, however, that any of these experts appreciated the significance of their early findings, and perhaps none had the imagination to consider how extensive these changes might be eventually with respect to solid fuels sales and distribution. (Reference here will be principally to bituminous coal.) Railroad Fuel Major changes in coal use did become pronounced after World War II, and it did not take an expert to see what was taking place and how serious the impact was likely to be. First, was the case of the steam and diesel locomotives. The railroads had been considered the best coal customers; they were steady and large purchasers and usually paid a better price than most others. Railroad fuel provided the basic mine realization and it often was the source for operating cash during general market slumps. It was the outlet for 20 pct of the bituminous coal production, as much as 110 million tons in 1946.

In an earlier paper1 measurements of contact angles due to the effect of xanthates on mineral surfaces were reported. The solutions in which these measurements were made differed widely from those of modern flotation circuits. It is intended, however, by introducing, one at a time, the other principal reagents of flotation, to approach gradually the solution composition of flotation liquors. The work now described is an attempt to determine the effect of one of the most important of these reagents—namely, sodium cyanide—on the establishment of air-mineral contact. The work has been carried out for the following companies: Broken Hill South, North Broken Hill, Zinc Corporation, Electrolytic Zinc of Australasia, Mount Lyell Mining and Railway, and Burma Corporation. Since the effect of cyanide is inseparably connected with the alkalinity, the results cited below deal with the mutual effects of alkalis and cyanide. Alkalis alone exert a significant effect on the air-mineral contact but comparatively large amounts are required. Since the addition of a small amount of cyanide greatly decreases the degree of alkalinity necessary for the suppression of contact at surfaces of any of the minerals experimented with (except galena) and since alkalis are rarely used alone in practice, little attention has been paid to cyanide-free solutions. It was shown in the previous paper that, excluding the dixanthogen effect, whenever contact was practicable at all in an ethyl xanthate solution the angle of contact was 60". There is, therefore, less necessity to measure equilibrium contact angles; in fact, the experiments herein described have generally been conducted with a view to determining whether contact is possible and not to measuring the actual value of the contact angle. The separations which have generally to be effected in dealing with complex sulfide ores are: (1) galena from sphalerite, pyrite, etc.; (2) sphalerite from pyrite and/or gangue minerals; (3) copper minerals from pyrite and gangue minerals; (4) pyrite from gangue minerals; (5) chal-

A CONSIDERABLE amount of information is available on the equilibrium distribution of manganese between slag and metal under oxidizing conditions. These data have increased our knowledge of the manganese reactions in the open hearth, ladle, and ingot mold. In contrast, there is a paucity of data on the slag-metal distribution of manganese under reducing conditions. The purpose of the present investigation was to study the equilibrium distribution of manganese between blast-furnace type slags and iron saturated with carbon. Experimental Method Furnace: The induction furnace used for the experiments is shown in Fig. 1. A 1 in. pipe, attached to the transite cover, was fitted with a window through which the charge could be observed. Material could be introduced into the furnace through a tee and plug without removing the cover. A graph-it cylinder (3 in. ID and 10'/2 in. long), centered within the induction coil, was used as a heating element. During a test, a zircon plug kept the top of the furnace from becoming too hot from heat radiation. At the bottom, a graphite block on the vertical center line of the furnace and extending 1 1/2 in. into the coil, was used as a support for the graphite crucibles containing the melt. The graphite crucibles, machined from regular carbon electrode stock, had a 2% in. OD with 3/16 in. walls and were 5% in. long. The fumes present in the furnace during the early part of a run made optical readings uncertain. A noble metal thermocouple was, therefore, adopted to measure the temperatures. The arrangement used, shown in Fig. 1, allowed the silmanite protection tube to be replaced with a minimum effort. The thermocouple was calibrated against a standard Pt-Pt-Rh thermocouple in a fused quartz protection tube. The latter was inserted in the molten iron by removing the glass window on the cover. The lower couple was found to be very sensitive to temperature changes. To insure accurate temperature readings, the graphite crucibles were made to fit tightly against the silmanite protection tube. Further, to avoid contamination of the thermocouple by carbon, the silmanite tube was changed and the calibration procedure was repeated at frequent intervals. By using this temperature measuring technique, the furnace was easily held within *1O°C of the desired temperature. Because of the small free space in the furnace, no attempt was made to control the atmosphere. It

The paper presents a theoretical approach to the drilling problem based on rock mechanics and drilling fluid hydraulics at the bottom of the hole. The volume of the fractured rock around the vevtically penetrating bit tooth is expressed as a function of the tooth pressure, included tooth angle, drilling fluid pressure and formation characteristics on the assumption that fracturing is preceded by plastic flow. This assumption is verified by comparing the stress-strain state in the rock around the tooth to that in equivalent tri-axial compression tests described in the literature. An expression similar to the above is derived for the tooth penetration in the cuttings which have been retrained at the bottom. Combination of these two expressions leads to a relation between depth of tooth penetration in the virgin rock, the amount of cuttings retained and the other variables. By relating the cutting volume to the drilling rate, the hydraulic bit horsepower and the drilling fluid pressure, it is possible to arrive at formulas which express the drilling rate for viscous or turbulent flow at the cutting surface, for instant clearance, for retained cuttings, or for false tooth foundering as functions of such variables as the drilling fluid pressure, hydraulic horsepower at the bit, rotary speed and bit weight. Plotting the results as drilling curves and comparing them to published field and laboratory data justify the conclusion that the drilling model presented in this paper approximates the actual mechanism. The drilling curves serve to explain some characteristic features of the rotary drilling operation, and the equations may be used for numerical evaluation of the effect of changes in the magnitude of some of the variables on the drilling rate. INTRODUCTION Published laboratory data have established that consistent and relatively simple relations exist between the drilling rate and any one of the important variables. For instance, the drilling rate usually increases at an increasing rate with the bit weight. It increases at a decreasing rate with the rotary speed, decreases at a decreasing rate with increased drilling fluid pressure and plots as an S-shaped curve against the hydraulic horsepower at the bit. This relative simplicity seems difficult to understand considering that the drilling mechanism is a continuous process of generation and removal of innumerable individual cuttings, under different conditions for each. On the other hand, the drilling rate (although determined by this complicated process) only expresses the average rate at which cuttings are produced and cleared away. Ignorance of the drilling mechanism as far as individual cuttings are concerned, therefore, does not exclude the possibility of arriving at a concept of the drilling rate provided the mechanism is properly evaluated for the average cutting. It then may be concluded from the first sentence that this concept also should be rather simple in its final form, although not necessarily in its derivation. Two aspects of the drilling mechanism are difficult to evaluate — (1) the effect a penetrating drilling fluid has on the stresses around a bit tooth entering the formation and (2) the volume of rock fractured by a penetrating tooth which moves both vertically and horizontally. Thus, the scope of this paper has been limited to an evaluation of the drilling mechanism in formations which have a low permeability and are drilled with hard-formation bits. In the following sections, the drilling mechanism is analyzed in three steps. First, the effect of tooth pressure on the volume of fractured rock around the tooth is evaluated, assuming initially that the bottom of the hole is free of cuttings and, then, determining the effect of a layer of these cuttings. In the second section, the thickness of this layer is related to the drilling rate and the chip clearance time, and the latter to the hydraulic horsepower at the bit under conditions of laminar and viscous flow at the cutting surface. In the third section. the previous results are combined with the rotary speed into drilling equations which are then plotted and compared to experimental drilling curves. This section also contains some numerical examples of drilling rate computations. Some mathematical details are given in the appendixes. Finally, it should be mentioned that, although some drilling equations are already available, these equations (with the exception of one' which attempts to relate drilling rate to drilling fluid pressure) are all mathematical expressions for observed laboratory data; none considers the effect of delayed drill-cutting removal, an essential feature of the drilling mechanism.

The effects of various elements on the activity coefficient of carbon in liquid iron have been studied by two experimental methods: 1) equilibration with controlled mixtures of CO and CO2; 2) the solubility of graphite in the melt. Activity coefficient of C is increased by Al, Co, Cu, Ni, P, Si, S, and Srz. It is decreased by Cr, Cb, Mn, Mo, W, and V. THE thermodynamic properties of the iron-carbon binary system have now been fairly well established, although some uncertainty remains with respect to the exact location of some of the phase boundaries. The activity of carbon in ferrite and in austenite has been measured in the classic researches of R. P. smith' while similar measurements by Richardson and ~ennis, and by Rist and chipman3 have established the values of the activity of carbon in liquid iron up to 1760°C. On the other hand, our knowledge of the effects of alloying elements on the activity of carbon in dilute solutions is restricted to Smith's experiments on systems Fe-C-Mn and Fe-C-Si in the austenitic range and to some more recent experiments of schwarzman4 in the a range. In addition there have been a number of determinations of the effects of various elements on the solubility of graphite in liquid iron, and from these the corresponding effect in saturated solution may be obtained. The purpose of the present study was to extend the investigation of the liquid system to include the effects of alloying elements upon the activity coefficient of carbon, principally in dilute solutions. Equilibrium measurements were made on the reaction C + co, = 2 CO (g) The prepared mixture of CO and CO,, diluted with argon, flowed over the surface of the liquid metal which, after several hours' exposure to the gas, was quenched and anqlyzed. As in the earlier experiments, the principal experimental difficulty was in the deposition of carbon on the parts of the furnace at temperatures slightly below that of the metal bath. In order to minimize this difficulty, the ratio (Pco)2 /PCo2 was restricted to values not much higher than 100 atm, and correspondingly the carbon concentration in the metal seldom exceeded 0.30 pct. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The method and apparatus were essentially the same as used by Rist and Chipman.3 The gaseous mixture consisting of highly purified CO, CO,, and argon, each controlled by a flowmeter, was led into the furnace and passed over the surface of the liquid-iron melt which was heated and stirred by high-frequency induction. One slight modification was made in that a molybdenum susceptor was placed outside the crucible for the sake of uniformity of temperature and to combat the tendency of carbon to precipitate on the crucible wall. Pure alumina crucibles approximately 25 mm ID were used. The charge consisting of about 30 g was made up of electrolytic iron, the alloying element to be added, and enough graphite to supply slightly more or less than the anticipated equilibrium carbon concentration. All metals used were of high purity. Metallic chromium, columbium, and vanadium were from special lots supplied by the Electro Metallurgical Co. Tin, copper, molybdenum, tungsten, cobalt, and nickel were of purest commercial grades. The electrolytic iron, after being cut to the proper size for charging, was prereduced by hydrogen at 850° to 1000°C to remove surface oxidation. The oxygen content of the reduced material was 0.002 pct. This treatment made it easy to control the carbon content of the initial melt. The charge was melted under the gas mixture to be used for the entire run. In some earlier melts the charge was melted under a stream of argon, but in this case some alumina was reduced from the crucible, and the aluminum thus absorbed in the melt was subsequently oxidized with the formation of a solid film of alumina on the surface of the melt. AS another safeguard against film formation, overheating of the bath was carefully avoided. All runs were made at a temperature of 1560°C. Under experimental conditions a charge of pure iron picked up 0.17 pct C in 3 hr and 0.23 pct C in 6 hr under an atmosphere for which the equilibrium concentration of carbon is 0.27. It is clear that the time required to reach equilibrium from an initially carbon-free melt would be very great. For this reason each experiment was started with a melt of known carbon concentration not far above or below the expected equilibrium value, and each melt was held at temperature for a period of at least 5 hr. Under such circumstances it was possible to chart the approach to equilibrium from both high-carbon and low-carbon materials. Temperature was controlled by frequent optical observation and adjustment and the metls were timed in such a way that the final 2 hr occurred during a time when electric power was steady; for example, 2 to 4 pm or after 11 pm. If silicon is in contact with silicon oxide, a heterojunction is formed which induces an inversion layer ("channel"). Influences of impurities and structural parameters on the channel are discussed. There seems to be no relation between surface damage in silicon and the channel. Phosphorz~s doping of the silicon oxide has no pronounced effect on the channel. Channels which were well above the range predicted by the heterojunction model were related to the action of H* at the silicon/silicon oxide interface. Channels which were well below tlze range predicted by the heterojunc-tion model were related to a transition region in the oxide adjacent to the interface. In support of the assumed transition region and the H+ are the ex-periments described on the paper. Furthermore, the concept of metastable OH groups in silzca, known from other publications, has been used to explain certain channel characteristics by the formation and the accommodation of hydrogen in the silicon oxide. THE electrical characteristics of a semiconductor device in many cases are influenced by the conditions of its surface. Because these conditions often are changing with temperature, time, ambient, or other parameters, numerous attempts have been undertaken to stabilize them by suitable processes. Several years ago Atallal studied the silicon/silicon dioxide interface and since then increasing attention has been given to the silicon dioxide as a means to stabilize silicon surfaces. This led to the evolution of the planar silicon devices where oxide layers are used to protect places at which the junctions are intersecting the surface. The formation of the oxide layers on silicon can be carried out by a variety of processes: high-temperature thermal oxidation (exposing the silicon surface to oxidizing agents such as 02, HzO, COz), evaporation of SiOz, or anodic oxidation of silicon. Originally the oxides were considered able to "passivate" the silicon surface and it was understood that they 1) protected the surface against any influence from the ambient and 2) stabilized surface conditions which were necessary for proper device performance. It soon was realized that the second quality was not always obtainable: Atalla and Tannenbaum showed that, in the process of forming a layer on doped silicon by thermal oxida- tion, electrically active impurities in the silicon near the interface are redistributed, thus giving rise eventually to the formation of unwanted charge distributions. The degradation of planar junctions during reoxidation of silicon was observed by Barson et a. Surface studies with silicon planar junction structures indicated that the breakdown voltage depended on the kind of procedure which was applied during or after oxidation.*" Yamin and worthinge report on charge storage and dielectric properties of SiOz films at elevated temperatures. Another influential parameter on the silicon surface is discussed by Lindmayer and usen,' namely the appearance of a surface potential on silicon as a consequence of the heterojunction formed by the silicon/silicon oxide interface. In the present paper the influence of impurities and structural parameters in silicon oxide in connection with the heterojunction is a particular object of our investigations. I) EXPERIMENTAL The material used was 10 ohm-cm p-type silicon slices with either damaged surfaces (mechanically lapped or polished) or damage-free surfaces (chemically polished). The majority of the slices were oxidized for 1 hr and 20 min at 1250°C in a steam + oxygen atmosphere generated by passing O2 through HzO at 90°C (wet oxygen). This led to oxide layers of about 9000 A. On some slices oxide layers were grown in pure oxygen (dry oxygen). By a photoresist process a set of 20 by 200 mil windows was then etched out from the oxide layer. The pattern of the windows is shown in Fig. 1. In a subsequent process n-type pockets with surface concentrations between 2 x 10" and 5 x 10" cm"3 were formed by phosphorus diffusion. A heat transfer study was made of hot gas injection into oil shale through wells interconnected by vertical fractures. This analysis involved the simultaneous numerical solution of a nonlinear, second-order partial differential equation that describes two-dimensional conduction heat transfer in oil shale and a nonlinear first-order partial differential equation that describes convection heat transfer in the fractures. Three nonlinear, temperature-dependent coefficients were used in this work; they are thermal conductivity, thermal capacity and retorting endothermic heat losses of oil shale. Vertical fractures were considered to be of finite height. Although vertical conduction heat transfer was not considered, an estimate of the error resulting from this limitation was made. The effects of injected gas temperature, injection rate, system geometry, cyclic injection and time upon retorting efficiency were investigated. Results from this study show that the rate of retorting oil shale is a direct function of both injection temperature and rate, and the theoretical producing air-oil ratio:(AOR) is an inverse function of temperature. Retorting rates are constant until "breakthrough" of the 700 F isotherm at the producing well, assuming constant injection parameters. Retorting rates for bounded systems are higher than the analogous unbounded systems and likewise AOR's are less. The use of an alternating injection-soak routine with high injection rates is less efficient than continuous injection at lower rates. These results indicate that injection temperatures on the order of 2000F or greater may give theoretical AOR's in the economic range. INTRODUCTION Over half of the known oil shale reserves are located in the U.S., and most of them lie in the Piceance Creek basin of Western Colorado. The Colorado oil shale outcrops on the edges of the Piceance Creek Basin. At the outcrops the shale beds are relatively thin, from 25 to 50 ft thick. In the center of the basin the oil shale is as great as 2,000 ft thick and is covered with 1,000 ft of overburden. It has been estimated that there are over 1,000 billion bbl of oil in shales having an oil content over 15 gal/ton in this basin. Oil shale does not contain free oil but an organic matter called kerogen. Kerogen yields petroleum hydrocarbons by destructive distillation. It must be heated to approximately 700F, at which temperature it decomposes into shale oil, gases and coke. The U.S. Bureau of Mines and, more recently, oil companies have conducted considerable research on surface retorting methods to economically recover oil from this shale. Another approach to exploit the oil shale deposits, in particular that portion having 1,000 ft of overburden, is to retort the oil shale in place and produce the liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons through wells drilled into the shale. Some research has been done on this approach.l,2 There are several variations to the in situ retorting approach. These variations fall into one of two groups, depending upon the geometry of the system: (1) retorting in a highly fractured or broken up matrix; (2) retorting from single fractures between production and injection wells. The latter is the group studied. Several investigators,3-6 using various assumptions, have studied flow of heat through horizontal systems. The objective of this work was to make a heat transfer study of in situ retorting oil shale by hot gas injection through wells interconnected by single vertical fractures of finite height. As a continuation of the earlier paper on the general subject of the SP log, a more complete analysis of certain features of the SP log in shaly sands is given. The pseudo-static SP in front of shaly sands is compared, on a theoretical basis, to the static SP in front of clean sands, as a function of the respective amount of shale and sand in the formation, and of the relative resistivities of the shale, of the uncontaminated part of the sand. and of the invaded zone of the sand. As a conclusion, the advantage of using reasonably conduc. tive mud in this case is shown. The discussion is illustrated by field examples. INTRODUCTION The discussion reported in the present paper is based on a theoretical analysis, and not on experiment. The field examples, joined to the text. are shown only as qualitative illustrations of the essential results of this analysis. Although the hypotheses made in the theoretical developments may perhaps be somewhat improved, it seems, nevertheless, that the results obtained account reasonably well for the actual phenomena, and give a fair approximation of their order of magnitude. The paper contains a mathematical analysis of a tri-dimen-sional distribution of potentials and current lines. due to spontaneous electromotive forces arising at the contact of shales and free electrolytes. as a function of the geometry and of the respective resistivities of the different media involved. It is assumed, although this hypothesis is not proven, that the emf's remain the same even if the shale occurs in very thin layers or in dispersed particles. It has already been pointed out 1,2,3 that, all other conditions being the same, the deflection of the SP log in front of a shaly sand is smaller than opposite a clean sand. When the thickness and the conductivity of a clean sand are large enough. the deflection of the SP log reaches a limiting value which is equal to the "static SP" of the clean sand. It is generally convenient to take the static SP of shale as the reference value or "base line." As a consequence, and for the sake of abbreviation, the expression. "static SP of a clean sand," is often used to designate the difference between the static SP of that sand and that of the shales, which difference is a measure of the total electromotive forces involved in the chain mud sand-shale. A similar limiting value is; also observed for the SP deflec-lion opposite a thick shaly sand, but it is smaller. just as if the total electromotive force involved were smaller in that case. This limiting value has been called the "Pseudo-Static SP" of the shaly sand. The static SP of a clean sand depends on the salinity of its connate water with respect to that of the mud, and, to a certain extent. on the differential pressure which controls the electro-filtration potentials, but it does not depend on the resistivity of the sand. On the contrary. the pseudo-static SP of a shaly sand depends not only on the salinity of its connate water and on the differential pressure, but also on the percentage of shale and on the resistivities of the shale, of the uncontaminated part of the sand, and of the zone invaded by the mud filtrate. If the three resistivities above were equal, the pseudo-static SP would be proportional to the percentage of sand in the shaly sand, and its departure from the static SP of a clean sand having the same connate water would simply be proportional to the percentage of shale. In that case, the pseudo-static SP of a shaly sand containing 10 per cent of shale would he 10 per cent less than the static SP of a clean sand. When. however. the sand is. on the average. substantially more resistive than the shale. the percentage of departure of the pseudo-static SP from the static SP of a clean sand is much larger than the percentage of shale. For that reason, the peaks of the SP log opposite shaly sands are systematically of smaller amplitude when the sands are oil-bearing than when they are water-bearing, all other conditions being the same. This feature is observed even when the sand beds are thick. and even when they do not contain a large percentage of shale. All this has already been described in all earlier publication", but mostly in a qualitative way. The present paper will analyze in more detail the action of the local SP currents which are generated inside of the shaly sands, and which are responsible for the abnormally low value of the pseudo-static SP. The quantitative computations have been extended to the general case of thin interbedded layers of sand and shale, where the resistivities of the shale and sand streaks do not have the same value: they are summarized in charts giving values of the pseudo-static SP of a shaly sand as a function of the different parameters involved. DEFINITIONS The static SP of a clean sand has been defined as the potential that would exist in the mud opposite that sand, were the SP current prevented from flowing. Such an ideal condition is represented on Fig. I-A. By analogy, the pseudo-static SP of a shaly sand can be defined as the potential that would exist in the hole, if the circuit shaly sand — surrounding shales — mud column were interrupted by the insulating plugs placed at the boundaries
