Twice in the past two years and in two widely separated localities-one near Williamsville, Mo., and the other in the Allard Lake district of Quebec- the Contract Drilling Division of the Longyear Company has experienced perplexing difficulties in drilling granitoid igneous rocks. The rocks in both places are characterized by appreciable amounts of feldspar intimately intergrown with quartz particles of microscopic dimensions. The disappointingly slow rate of advance and the exceptionally high bortz loss, obtaining during the life of these two projects, are ascribed largely to the resistance to abrasion of these two minerals when arranged in this intergrown pattern. Whether all intergrowth-bearing igneous rocks would offer extraordinary resistance to bit progress cannot be stated with assurance on the strength of these experiences alone. More data on diamond drilling this sort of material in a number of localities are needed before any generalizations can be made safely.

Industrial Minerals, often called the Cinderella Minerals or the Building Blocks of industry continued their growth patterns through 1973, although profits were slightly lower due to the cost-price squeeze. Most of the individual reports which follow indicate growth rates of 3-15%. Surprisingly such commodities as sulfur held firm in spite of the over supply in the Canadian gas fields; cement was in short supply while the asbestos industry reported a worldwide shortage of group 4 and 5 fibers. Talc and perlite production set new records. In synopsis, 1973 was a productive year for industrial minerals. However 1974 onward appears to be one of contradiction. The unsettled conditions of world economics, the energy shortage, compounded by the Arabs oil embargo have created great problems for all industries. The high energy consuming segments of the Industrial Minerals field will be under intense pressures. On the other hand limestone, lime and perhaps trona, nahcolite might be consumed in ever increasing tonnages in SO2 removal systems connected with smelters and coal-fired power stations. The effects of the proposed changes in the staking, claiming and exploitation of federal lands by the BLM may also have serious repercussions not only to the industrial minerals field but to the entire mining industry. 1974-1975 will certainly be ear-marked as a year of frustrations and difficult decisions.

The production of non-ferrous secondary metals has become a large and important industry in the United States, and deals with practically cvery type of manufacturing concern. Its business is unique in that it generally buys frorn its customers as well as sells to them, whether they are individuals, cities, corporations, or the United States government. Its operations are of vital importance to the success and prosperity of nlany of the nation's most important manufacturers; yet there are few industries about which less is generally known by those outside it, whether concerning the rliagnitude of its operations or the details of its actual technique. The industry itself is to blame for this meager publicity, because its technical men have made few attempts to openly exchange ideas, in spite of the excellent examples set by the iron and steel or the copper and brass industries. Whether this is due to the ancient shroud of secrecy generally supposed to cover smelting operations, or because its technical men actually felt that the industry was too puny to be interesting, is hard to say. This paper will consider its subject in a general way, attenlpting to show something of the size and importance of the industry, as well as its fitness to do its work well. Attention will be called to the sound economic reasons for the handling of non-ferrous wastes by specialists, and to the often unseen losses of metals and labor which occur when manufacturc~rs rcclairn thrir own metallic wastes. Magnitude of the Modern Industry No particular thought is given to the kitchen accident whereby a ruined saucepan is sorrowfully tossed into the ash can, yet it is a fairly safe guess that within a month this saucepan, together with hundreds of its follows, will again be in service, perhaps in an autonlobile crankcase, or in an electric vacuum sweeper. It is by this conversion of the useless into the useful, whether from home or large manufacturer, that the secondary tonnage is built up.

By contrast with viscometry and sedimentation, no actual measurements of the applicability of Stokes' law to steelmaking have ever been reported; instead, the proof for and against Stokes' law has been inferred from the frequently observed phenomenon that inclusions collect in the top scum and the bottom of ingots. As such proof is unsatisfactory, continued reference to Stokes' law in steelmaking, even as a model for calculating the terminal velocities of rising inclusions, should be avoided. In fact, all conclusions that have been reached regarding size, density, and viscosity on the flotation of inclusions could be made more rationally without Stokes' law. A worthwhile exception is that of Mitsche1 who in 1934 used Stokes' law to show not only the expected effects of size, density, and viscosity on flotation but also the beneficial effects of i) melting under a slag layer (now Electro Slag Refining); ii) treating melts with synthetic slags (Ref. 2 gives recent applications); iii) bubbling an inert gas through the melt (recent applications in Refs. 3 and 4); and iv) altering the solid/ liquid interface characteristics. At this point, it should again be emphasized that the boundary conditions for which Stokes' law was derived place enormous restrictions on the law but its application, as noted earlier, can yield useful results in some fields under certain conditions and within well-defined limits. When compared with inclusions, which may be solid or liquid, spherical or irregular, dispersed or coagulated, interacting between themselves and the melt, floating in a liquid which is in a state of motion of varying intensity5 and contained in vessels of various shapes and sizes that may change with time as in a solidifying ingot, the conclusion is obvious-Stokes'

A method of calculating the changes in blast-furnace performance brought about by burden and/or blast modifications is presented. Essentially the method consists of three simultaneous equutions derived from materials and heat balances. These equations can be used not only to evaluate quantitatively the effect of changes in process operating variables on furnace performance, but also to provide a useful means of evaluating changes in process variables which cannot be measured directly. It has been customary for a number of years to use simple heat and materials balances as a basis for assessing blast-furnace practice. A good example of the method used to set up these balances is that proposed by Joseph and Neustatter.1 This approach to process assessment has limited utility, however, in that it cannot be used to predict the furnace coke rate or production under new operating conditions. Using an approach based on multiple correlation of blast-furnace variables, R V. Flint2 has developed an equation which may be used to predict the change in coke rate that will result from some changes in operating conditions with a reasonable degree of accuracy. Although this equation has useful applications in production planning, it cannot be used to study the relationships between the operating variables and the fundamental thermochemi-cal characteristics of the process. In attempting to analyze the blast-furnace process quantitatively, the idea of dividing the furnace into zones3 may at first appear attractive. In our present state of knowledge, however, it is not possible to define with any accuracy the physical limits of such zones in relationship to their temperatures or to the reactions which may occur in them. Although its application is restricted, the zonal approach to blast-furnace analysis is useful in some instances. For example, the change in the calculated flame temperature in the "combustion zone" caused by injecting steam constitutes information which is helpful in understanding why the addition of steam to the blast is best accompanied by an increase in blast temperature. The zonal approach cannot, at the present time, be used to establish the relationships between process variables and process performance if the whole process rather than part of it is to be considered. One of the earliest approaches to the problem of relating blast-furnace operating variables to pro- duction and coke rate was that developed by Marshall.4 Essentially Marshall's work showed that it was possible to estimate the performance of a furnace by solving three simultaneous equations which consisted of rudimentary carbon and heat balances plus a further equation relating the production, wind rate, and the carbon burned at the tuyeres. Although these equations did not include all of the chemical and thermal variables of the process, their derivation and application seems to be the earliest attempt which achieved any success in relating prior furnace operating data to the calculation of furnace performance under different blast conditions. Work carried out in Germany has been directed mainly towards prediction of coke rates using material and thermal balances rather than statistical methods. wesemann5 used prior furnace operating data as part of the basis for predicting the change in coke rate accompanying a change in burden composition. This author employed a method of successive approximations to estimate the secondary changes in slag volume and stone rate brought about by the change in coke rate. The most recent analysis, which seems to have been developed concurrently with the thermochemical model presented in this paper, has been described by Georgen.6 This author has succeeded in improving on Wesemann's approach by expressing the total changes in the slag volume and stone rate in terms of the change in coke rate itself. This is accomplished in a manner similar to that used in the thermochemical model described in this paper. Although Georgen makes use of a calculated furnace heat loss, he does not relate the heat loss per unit of hot metal to the production rate as is done in the present work. Georgen's approach may be used to calculate the changes in materials requirements accompanying changes in furnace operation; it cannot be used to assess the resulting changes in production. The fact that blast-furnace behavior can be interpreted by consideration of the heat requirements of the process was demonstrated by Dancy, Sadler, and Lander.7 In the analysis of blast-furnace operation with oxygen and steam injection these authors showed that it was possible to account for the changes in production and coke rate

ONE time or another placer mining attracts the attention of a large number of people, because of the possible low initial investment, low operating cost, and quick returns. Much has been said about sampling and operating placer deposits but many are still inclined to jump at a property without giving much, if any, consideration to proper sampling. This statement does not apply to experienced mining engineers but I am hoping that readers will tear out this article and pass it along where it will do the most good and thus help to preserve the reputation of legitimate mining. It would appear that some people have an ability to sink test pits in high-grade gravel that is positively uncanny. Kinking in zinc single-crystal tension specimens was observed under conditions of low stress and high temperature. Kinking is discussed in relation to other plastic bending phenomena on the basis of dislocation theory. Experiments on the stress-induced motion of small angle boundaries are reported. KINKING was first reported by Orowan1 as a new deformation mechanism. He observed the phenomenon in cadmium single crystals loaded in compression. Glide lamellae in a local region of the rod were observed to snap over suddenly to a tilted position, resulting in a sudden shortening of the specimen. Between the tilted portion and the rest of the crystal there were fairly sharp boundaries, with the slip plane assuming approximately mirror image positions on opposite sides of these boundaries. Orowan considered the boundaries to be regions where dislocations had concentrated. Hess and Barrett' observed the formation of kinks in critically oriented zinc compression specimens. It was found that the sudden snapping over of the tilted region was not an essential part of the kinking phenomenon but rather was associated with the method of loading. Kinking was explained on the basis of the accepted mechanisms of slip and flexural glide. It was also suggested that a kink can be considered as a special type of deformation band. During a recent investigation of the effect of surface condition on creep of zinc single crystals," a similar phenomenon was observed in crystals which were loaded in tension. The specimens were 0.4 in. diam cylindrical rods with a free length of 4 in. between end connections. All of the crystals were tested at a constant load. adjusted to give an extension rate of approximately 0.05 pct per hr. Kinking, as shown in Fig. 1, occurred in some of the tests performed at temperatures above 200°C. Kinking was observed in specimens varying widely in initial orientation, scattering about a 45" angle between the slip plane and the specimen axis. The condition leading to kinking in tension appeared to be non-uniform distribution of flow along the gage length combined with the restraint imposed by the tensile load. At low temperatures and fast strain rates, the distribution of strain throughout the midsection of tension specimens was generally quite uniform; therefore, bend planes developed only near the ends as described by Miller.4 However, at high temperatures under creep conditions it was difficult to obtain specimens in which the distribution of flow was uniform. Some of the factors which may have caused differences in flow stress along the length of the crystals are: Nonuniform distribution of impurities, accidents of growth (lineage structure), slight bending or other damage during handling, surface conditions, and strain-aging characteristics due to dissolved nitrogen." Plastic flow, once started in a local region, often continued to a relatively large strain before other parts of the gage length became active. Under these conditions a series of kinks, such as those in Fig. 1, were produced. Fig. 2 illustrates how a nonuniform distribution of slip produces bending moments which- are responsible for kink formation. If no plastic bending were to occur while the rod extended by pure slip in two separate sections of the rod, it would assume a shape such as that in Fig. 2a. A specimen having this shape and being subjected to a tension load would have concentrations of stress at the concave surfaces C and lower than average stress would exist at the convex surfaces D. Therefore a bending moment is superimposed on the average stress in the regions between C and D. The positions of potential bend planes under these conditions are shown as dotted lines. Actually no such shape as Fig. 2a develops because plastic bending in the region C-D occurs simultaneously with pure slip in the intervening regions. The observed structure of a tension kink is indicated by Fig. 2b. Perhaps the best approach to an understanding of kinking as well as other related plastic bending phenomena, such as the bend planes discussed by Miller,' cell formation studied by Wood et al.,6 and polygonization,7 is consideration of the dislocation model of a bent lattice. Current theories of the slip process postulate generation or multiplication of dislocations at certain lattice imperfections. The principal mines of this region are 7 miles SE. from Gusa, and about 4 miles in a direct line from the seacoast. Gusa is a small town on the north coast of Mindanao, 4 miles east from Cagayan, the capital of the province of Misamis. The mines are reached by steep, narrow trails over ridges varying in altitude from 1100 to 1600 feet above sealevel. The whole region is covered with a thick growth of tall grass, except a few spots on the sides of some of the hills, where there are patches of timber and jungle.

The operating behavior of liquid-solid cyclones is outlined, together with the nature and range of the process results obtainable, to serve as a background for engineers wishing to consider application of this new process tool. BY now most engineers are familiar with the liquid-solid or Dutch State Mines cyclone. However, it should be helpful to know exactly what it is that the equipment does and what its limits are. Without going into cyclone theory, this paper will describe the operating characteristics of Dutch State Mines cyclones. These are manufactured under license in this country and sold under the trade-marked name of DorrClone. The physical construction of the liquid-solid cyclone has been covered in many papers,'-' the DorrClone in particular being described in some detail by Weems. Fig. 1 shows the unit in cross-section. The feed enters at C. The coarse, heavy particles are thrown centrifugally to the periphery and make their way down the wall to the apex where their rate of discharge as underflow is controlled by an adjustable rubber apex valve. As the apex diameter is decreased the solids build up behind the valve, producing a denser underflow. Meanwhile the fine particles are swept into the upward flowing vortex stream which exits as overflow through the vortex finder, F. Flexibility to produce the specific result desired in a particular process is achieved by providing means for varying the areas of the entrance, vortex discharge, and apex discharge. The entrance area may be varied by insertion of special shims. Vortex discharge area may be changed by use of different-sized vortex finders which are interchangeable. Similarly, the different sizes of apex valves are interchangeable and in addition each apex valve is variable down to about 60 pct of its maximum diameter. A most significant primary distinction to make is that although liquid-solid cyclones have been sometimes called thickeners, they actually are classifiers, and very potent ones. They are almost never thickeners in the special sense that many metallurgical engineers understand the term. There would be no profit in quibbling over the definition of a word, but when the application of cyclones is considered, it will help to understand the difference be- tween two mechanisms, one of which will be called classification, and the other thickening. In what is called thickening the fine solid particles present in the feed hold together by surface attraction during the sedimentation process. The loose network of particles thus held together constrains all particles to settle at approximately the same rate, the larger ones dragging the smaller ones down. As a result, pulp settles with a sharp line of demarcation between solids and a relatively clear supernatant liquid. Essentially all the solids, regardless of their fineness, pass into the thickened underflow, and a clear overflow is separated. In classification, on the other hand, the interparti-cle forces are relatively insignificant as compared to the settling force on the individual particles, and are insufficient to prevent independent movement of the particles. The coarsest, heaviest particles settle most rapidly through the pulp, passing more slowly settling fines. Particles coarser than the mesh-of-separation essentially all settle into the underflow, but if the feed contains any particles finer than the mesh of separation, at least part of them will appear in the overflow. A clear supernatant or overflow can be obtained only if there are no undersize particles present in the feed. Thus it will be seen that classification is impossible under ideal thickening conditions. The finer particles are pulled down at essentially the same rate as coarser particles, and there is no separation on the basis of particle size. The surface attraction holding the particles together in a thickener is usually feeble. Whenever the sedimentation force on any particle is strong with respect to the interparticle forces, that particle can pass through the tenuous structure and settle independently. There are at least four ways of making the sedimentation force strong, with respect to the interparticle forces, and obtaining classification. First, and most obvious, the particles may be large and heavy. Thus coarse sands settle out in a beaker or Dorr thickener ahead of the rest of the thickening solids. Second, the interparticle forces may be altered by physicochemical means; i.e., it is often necessary to add dispersing agents to destroy the interparticle forces and permit classification to take place. The great question of the economical production of good steel, ingot metal, or homogeneous iron (we scarcely know now what to call it) from good materials, and at reasonable prices, has, thanks to the intelligence and energy of a few American engineers, been successfully solved in this country. The following is a description of the methods used in rescuing men and extinguishing the underground fire at the Pennsylvania mine, Butte, Mont. , This fire, which cost the lives of 21 men, began about 9 p.m., Feb. 14, 1916, at or near a ventilating fan on the 1,200 air-shaft station. This shaft at that time was downcast, while the main hoisting shaft was upcast. Owing to the proximity of the fire to the air shaft, the air in the latter soon became heated, and as the fan on the level was not running— the power having been cut off shortly after the outbreak of the fire—the air shaft became upcast to the 300 level. At this point a blanket of cold air from the surface caused the smoke and gases to be drawn in on that level and carried down again through the workings to the 1,200. A short time after the discovery of the fire, water was turned down the air shaft through a series of pipes around the collar of the shaft, which caused the smoke to recede below the 300, so that within 2 hr. it was possible to search that level for the missing men. From the above it will be apparent why the air shaft was upcast instead of downcast, as under normal conditions, and why men were suffocated at considerable distances from the seat of the fire. The smoke and gases that came up the main hoisting shaft did not diffuse through the workings to any extent. There are doors on all levels in the connections to the main hoisting and air shafts, but in the confusion and running around many of these doors were left open, and this undoubtedly caused the smoke and gases to spread more rapidly than they would otherwise have done. It was necessary for most of the men on the various levels to pass close to the air shaft in going to the hoisting shaft, and when they encountered the smoke and gases in that vicinity a number turned back and climbed down with the direction of the air currents and were then suffocated, while all those who passed through the pall of smoke to the main shaft were saved. There were 220 men in the mine that night, and all but 25 were hoisted to the surface within 30 min. after the discovery of the fire. During the last year I had occasion, on behalf of our New York copper works, to send to various chemists samples, intended to he accurate, of material which we were buying and selling, and I was astonished to find what differences were reported. After talking over the probable reasons for this with a number of chemists and metallurgists, it was suggested that it would be of real use and some scientific interest to send samples to the different chemists, and take such care in making up the samples that we could feel sure that each chemist had as nearly identical a sample as it was possible to make. The Musconetcong tunnel is situated in New Jersey, near the line of the Central Railroad of New Jersey, about twelve miles from Easton, on the Easton and Amboy Railroad, the latter being the extension of the Lehigh Valley Railroad to tide-water. Up to the present time, the terminus of the Lehigh Valley Railroad has been at Phillipsburg, N. J., opposite Easton, passengers connecting there with New York by the Morris and Essex (D. L. and W.) and New Jersey Central lines; freight and coal being forwarded by the Morris and Essex to tide-water at Hoboken, and by the Central Railroad to Elizabethport and Port Johnson ; also, by the Belvidere and Delaware connections through Trenton to South Amboy.

THE developments in construction and operation of the basic open-hearth furnace that have taken place in recent years have placed new emphasis on the vital influence played by regulation and control of the combustion system in both furnace production and furnace life. The several factors influencing flame development, such as regulation of fuel supply, air supply, air preheat, furnace draft, and furnace reversal, must be controlled closely if successful furnace performance is to be accomplished. Rugged instrumentation of distinctive design is required to supply dependable information concerning operating conditions, which is requisite to proper regulation of combustion. This chapter attempts to give a practical discussion of the various features of open-hearth practice and instrumentation related to the efficient heating of the furnace, control of temperature, and protection of the furnace structure from accidental overheating. The appended references will be helpful to readers wanting a more detailed treatment of individual topics. OPEN-HEARTH FUELS The most important open-hearth fuels are listed in Table 4-1 together with their compositions and other data useful for combustion calculations. A detailed discussion of open-hearth fuels is not attempted here, but certain factors peculiar to their application to this type of process are briefly indicated on the following pages. Very often an open-hearth shop is forced by economic factors to use a fuel to which its furnaces are not very well adapted, because the general fuel-allocation scheme for the works as a whole seems to demand it. Often a variable marginal supply of coke-oven gas or tar must be consumed by the open hearth, together with another fuel such as producer gas, natural gas, or oil, to fill out total requirements. FOR the development of a mine, a shaft of small cross-section is usually sunk, of no larger size than is absolutely necessary. After the mine has been developed and put on a production basis it is a common practice to sink a shaft of larger cross-section for hoisting and use the original shaft for the handling of men and material into the mine. While that ar¬rangement is usually expedient, the small size of the supply cages presents a problem in the handling of ma¬terial. Where a cage is, say, 4 by 4 ft., which is not an uncommon size, all lengthy and bulky material must be handled piece by piece several times from the supply department to the underground stations. Thus drill steel and timbers over 4 ft. long will be loaded on cars at the supply department and wheeled to the shaft, where each piece must be unloaded from the cars and stood up in the cage. They are then lowered to the shaft station, unloaded piece by piece and placed in cars, run to the supply station and again unloaded and stored until called for. In such a case handling becomes a major item in the cost of supplies.

Corrosion tests should be designed so as to facilitate as far as possible the interpretation of results, consequently factors which may affect the rate of corrosion should be controlled as far as practicable, and very full data should be given regarding the conditions of the test. Among the most important factors affecting the rate of corrosion is often the rate of supply of oxygen to the metal surface. It is essential therefore to understand the mechanism by which oxygen is transferred from the liquid surface to the surface of the metal. The work of Adeney and his coworkers has thrown much light on this mechanism. They have shown1 that the aeration of deaerated water and salt solutions proceeds much more rapidly than can be accounted for by mere diffusion, and have suggested that downward "streaming" takes place from the surface of the water, due mainly to an increase of density brought about by evaporation. The evaporation reduces the temperature of the surface layer, and also increases the concentration in the case of salt solutions. The effect of evaporation in facilitating the transfer of oxygen to a metal and increasing the corrosion of the metal was shown in some experiments due to Friend.2 He tested the corrosion of mild steel plates immersed in water in glass jars, a steady stream of air being drawn over the surface of the water in the jars. The air passing through half the number of jars was saturated with moisture, that passing through the others was dried with calcium chloride. He found that "in every case the water exposed to dry air was approximately twice as corrosive as that exposed to air saturated with water vapor." Conditions for Quantitative Corrosion Tests These results show that we must either control or prevent evaporation at the liquid surface, if we wish to avoid effects on the rate of cor-
