MONDAY evening a reception, supper and bridge in honor of the guests of the Woman's Auxiliary was given by the New York Section in the Engineering Woman's Club. After supper, tables were made up for bridge. Some tried jig-saw puzzles, while others merely visited. On Tuesday morning the annual business meeting was called to order by President Bassett. Mrs. Bassett read a note from Mrs. Hoover regretting her inability to be present, and then gave her welcome and message: It gives me much pleasure to welcome you in this annual meeting, and I hope you will be able to come next year, and those who are not able to come this year I hope will be here next year.

AT the Regional meeting in Columbus, Ohio, in September 1949, the authors presented a progress report of the first year's operation with a Hardinge tricone mill in closed circuit with a Dorr hydroscillator. The present report covers our findings on this grinding circuit to January, 1950. In order to clarify our position, the authors wish to state that no invention or discovery is claimed. The Tennessee grinding circuit is simply an engineered arrangement of known equipment arranged to incorporate all of the recognized efficiency factors of comminution as they are known today. As we concluded our first report, it was not clear how effective the Tennessee mode of operation would be on harder ores. The only information we had at that time was that the Bond grindability test at 48-mesh gave 6.04 g of undersize per revolution. A later test on the same sample at 100-mesh reduced this to 2.04 g, which is definitely in the harder ore class, and which makes the reported 8.80 kw-hr per ton of -200-mesh produced a very creditable figure.

SUBSTANTIAL deposits of Bessemer hematite have been found recently by drilling beneath Steep Rock Lake, Ontario, which is situated in the northern part of the Lake Superior Region. It will be practicable to divert the waters flowing into this lake and develop open pits on the upper part of two large ore bodies by damming off and pumping out the water in the part of the lake in which they occur. Ultimately, the bulk of the ore will be mined by underground methods. Owing to the generally massive nature of the rocks in the area, no underground flows of major consequence are anticipated after diversion of the lake. The Steep Rock deposits are attributed in origin to hydrothermal replacement. They were formed, for the most part, along an unconformable, brecciated contact between the Steep Rock limestone and an overlying younger volcanic series. The replacing solutions came in as igneous after-effects, following upon the intrusion of basic igneous rocks that invaded the hanging-wall volcanics. It is believed that this took place in a geological period roughly equivalent to late Middle Huronian, which was the period when the most extensive iron-bearing rocks of the Lake Superior Region were formed. Comparison is made with other deep-seated iron-ore bodies in the Lake Superior Region, the origins of which are ascribed in the discussion to hydrothermal replacement.

I. EARLY FURNACES. COPPER blast-furnace construction in America has long recognized a general standard in the rectangular mater jacketed shaft with separate forehearth. The details, however, and especially those relating to shaft dimensions, have had to meet a great variety of conditions, and show no uniformity whatever. Selecting a few of the present day Western plants, we find furnace lengths varying from 12.5 to 87 ft., widths at tuyere level from 42 to 84 in., and heights above tuyeres from 5 ft. 4 in. to 22 ft. 4 in. ; and comparing present designs with those of the past, we meet contrasts no less striking. Unlike its transverse section, the length of a furnace has come to depend rather on the size of unit desired than on the requirements of smelting ; and if the question of length be ignored, several of the various existing designs can be grouped together on the basis of a common transverse section. This section, having a width at tuyere level of 56 in. and a height above tuyeres of 18 ft., was developed at Great Falls, and the story of its development contains some interesting features. Ground was broken for the Great Falls works in the spring of 1891. ACCORDING to Tammann,1 the explanation of the effect of mechanical deformation in producing changes in the properties of metals is one of the most important problems of physical metallurgy, taking rank with the study of the constitution of alloy systems; and this problem has long attracted-the attention of practitioner and scientist alike. Its solution was not advanced materially until Tammann2 set up his translation hypothesis with its crystallographic basis, while other hypotheses, such as the amorphous metal hypothesis of Beilby3 and Rosenhain,4 have been shown by more intensive studies to be less and less satisfactory. The principles of the Tammann translation hypothesis have proved to be useful even up to today and in spite of all of the recent accumulation of experimental data, while the differences of opinion which have arisen relate to the extent to which the hypothesis accounts for the observed changes in properties and to what extent further assumptions are necessary. Stimulated by the proposals of Tammann, there soon developed a lively experimental activity which aimed at the elucidation of the structural or crystallographic changes produced by the mechanical deformation of metals. Parallel movements of crystal "blocks" along definite crystal slip planes had already been observed by lowing and Rosenhain5 in 1900, in metals which had been moderately deformed but without shedding light on the crystallographic nature of the processes accompanying more severe deformation. The solution of this important problem was not advanced until a much later date, or until the methods of X-ray crystal analysis had become available. The Elk City district is in north-central Idaho about 60 miles east of Grangeville and near the headwaters of the South Fork of the Clearwater River (Fig. 1). At the height of its boom in the early sixties, Elk City had a population of more than 2000 people, Published estimates of the placer production from the district range from $10,000,000 to $18,500,000. Although the first quartz-vein location was made as early as 1870, very little gold was extracted from quartz ores until after the completion of the American Eagle mill in 1902. Between 1902 and 1932 a total of from $750,000 to $1,000,000 was taken from about six properties. General Geology Distribution of Rocks Banded gneiss (Fig. 2) is the most aburldant bedrock in the Elk City district. It is interbedded with schist and quartzite and ill some places these rocks have been intruded by sills and dikes. Banded gneiss prevails in the western part of the area whereas schist prevails to the southeast. Augen gneiss occurs for the most part as irregular bodies, which lie transverse to the trend of the banded gneiss and schist. It is largely confined to two areas; one of which extends from east of the American Eagle mine westward as far as the Black Pine mine, a total distance of about five miles, and another area of about two square miles in the vicinity of the California-Idaho placer mine. Quartzite is fairly abundant. In addition to the bands of the latter interbedded with gneiss and schist, some large lenses crop out in the southeastern part of the dik-trict near the southern contact of the area underlain by granodiorite. During the past few years considerable interest has been shown in the study of fiber, and its effect, in wrought metals. Fiber has recently been defined as a "condition of parallelism of important lines or details in the structure."' Briefly stated, two distinct types of fiber are commonly encountered. One results from the alignment in the direction of working of constituents, more or less segregated, such as slag, oxides, carbides and dendritic formations. The second, and least understood, type is produced by working the metal below the recrystallization temperature in such a way as to develop a parallelism of the grains. This condition is readily recognized by the pronounced elongation of the grains in the direction of working. Under certain deformational treatments the grain fragments produced by cold working tend to orient in certain definite directions with respect to the axis of extension. Furthermore, even in metals that have been annealed after cold working preferred orientations may be present. It is perhaps logical to assume that such marked parallelism of structural elements would be manifested by directional properties in the metal. As a matter of fact, tests on many kinds of materials have shown differences in varying degrees. In recognition of this condition, proper design, for many purposes, places the fiber axis in such a way as to present the direction of maximum strength to the greatest applied stress. Earlier Investigations Howe2 has written at considerable length regarding the causes and practical significance of fiber in steel and wrought iron. His studies showed that wrought iron and the puddled steel sheets (materials of plastic origin) were weaker transversely than longitudinally. The transverse deficit ranged from 5 to 29 per cent. Magnetic torque studies of ferromagnetic single crystals have been carried out in a number of laboratories during the last decade&apos;s2 and some work has been reported on polycrystalline material showing preferred orientation. Goss3 used the method extensively in developing electrical sheet with desirable magnetic properties, but he used it as a control rather than as a means of studying the texture. Bozorth4 made a quantitative correlation of a torque curve he obtained from some cold-rolled iron with the texture as determined from X-rays, but did not extend his studies beyond the one specimen. Other studies, which have been reported from time to time2,5 have also been incomplete in the sense that no effort was made to study a whole series of samples, differing only in degree of cold reduction or in the annealing temperature, in order to ascertain the effect of such treatments on the texture as revealed by torque measurements. It is the purpose of this investigation to make such a study, mainly in order to see how useful the method can be made when used under favorable circumstances and to find what kind of a correlation can be expected between magnetic and X-ray studies of texture. Before proceeding further, it is desirable to say a little about single crystals, so as to make clear the concepts involved in magnetic torque measurements. Magnetic Torque Method It is fairly well known nowadays that single crystals of ferromagnetic substances have directions of easy magnetization and of hard magnetization. In Fig. 1 are reproduced typical magnetization curves for a single crystal of iron, which show that in a < 100 > direction saturation occurs at low fields compared to those required to saturate the same crystal in a <110> or a <111> direction. Under the caption "fault," geologists intend to include all mass movements of solid rocks over adjacent rock masses. When these are studied long after their origin, however, circumstances make it possible to recognize as "fault" only formations showing clear evidence of actual movement of one side with respect to the other. Necessarily the chief evidence consists of the offset of a vein, bed, or other key structure. Planes of movement parallel to the bedding, or nearly so, are recognized with difficulty or are overlooked and hence many important faults are wholly unrecorded. Indeed, among standard American references on structural geology, one alone emphasizes the importance of bedding-plane movements and that one only briefly1. For some time the writer, cognizant of this difficulty, has paid special attention to such movements, both as observed in the field and as recorded in the literature. It is believed that enough data are now at hand to justify a short discussion. Its purposes are fivefold. It is desired first to briefly classify and describe at least the more common kinds of bedding-plane faults, and second, to examine the causes and manner of their formation, at least in instances where the subject has not yet been well covered by other investigators. Third, certain by-products of bedding-plane movements are of such conspicuous importance to the economic geologist and mining engineer as to merit mention. Fourth, concrete illustrations should be placed before the reader in order to lend reality and to furnish a basis of comparison with his experience; such illustrations will necessarily be scattered through the text of this paper. They are only in part from the writer&apos;s own field observations. The fifth and prime objective of this paper is to direct attention to the great importance of movements on the bedding planes, in the hope that the recognition of such movements and their significance may simplify mining problems.

No metallurgical process developed in the 20th century compares with froth flotation in its effect on the mineral industry. Processes like gravity - concentration, amalgamation, and pyrometallurgical reduction are of ancient origin; others like cyanidation and electrolytic reduction were well established by 1900. Such metallurgical processes as heavy-media separation, ion-exchange, and solvent extraction belong to this century, but their influence is small compared with froth flotation. Data collected by the U. S. Bureau of Mines* in a canvass of 202 froth flotation plants reveal that, in 1960, 198- million tons of material was treated to recover 20-million tons of concentrates which contained approximately $1 billion in recoverable products. SIGNIFICANCE OF FLOTATION Froth flotation as described in this chapter refers to a wet process for separating properly ground mineral particles into two or more products. It involves the separation of mineral particles from each other in a liquid pulp by means of air bubbles. Finely crushed ore is agitated in water with the addition of air or other gases. Various chemicals and oils are added to cause the selected mineral particles to attach themselves to the air or gas bubbles. These bubbles, carrying the mineral particles, rise to the surface where they are removed in a froth, while the other particles remain suspended in the pulp. The earliest flotation divided the raw material into two products: a bulk concentrate that was removed as a froth and a tailing that remained in the flotation machine. The froth usually contained the valuable constituents. The successful application of such a process depended on the recovery of a single concentrate from which one or more valuable constituents could be recovered by a chemical or smelting process. With the advance of the art, however, the principle of selective flotation, by which two or more relatively pure products could be recovered from complex raw materials, was evolved. This is a most interesting paper and some data in it are corroborated by work I did at Watertown Arsenal some time ago with iron powder. I would like to ask Dr. Wulff to say just a little more about the compressive and tensile stresses on the surface of compacts. JOHN WULFF (author&apos;s reply).-Our work has not yet been completed; although enough data have been obtained with cylindrical compacts of iron to permit some conclusions. Briefly, in a compact 3/4 in. high and 1/2 in. in diameter pressed at 48 tons per sq. in., the residual stresses on the surface measured by X-ray diffraction techniques are as follows: The radial stresses on top center and bottom of compacts are practically zero; the longitudinal residual stresses on the side walls are near the top quarter of the compact about seven tenths that of the yield point of mild steel in tension; at the center surface of the compact they are in compression and in magnitude about 0.3 that of mild steel in tension; near the bottom, they are practically zero. F. V. LENEL.?- I was particularly interested in the work that Messrs. Wulff and Seelig reported on the influence of lubrication on the density of parts. In connection with the work of the American Society for Testing Materials on determining the green density of a compact, we ran into considerable difficulty in getting reproducible results of green density determinations. It was much easier to get a reproducible green density when the lubricant was mixed with the powder than when the lubricant was applied to the die walls; particularly when the die was not perfect-i.e., if it was somewhat rough or out of round. In this case, it was almost impossible to get reproducible green densities when the die walls were lubricated, while it was not too difficult to get reproducible

The Asientos-Tepezala district is in the north of the State of Aguasca-lientes, about 30 miles north of the city of Aguascalientes, the capital. The district is reached by a standard-gage railway on the west side through the junction, Rincon de Romos, which is on the main line of the National Railways of Mexico from El Paso to Aguscalientes. The terminal is Tepezala. On the east side a narrow gage connects Asientos with the junction, San Gil, on the main line, Asientos to San Luis Potosi. Tepezala on the west side of the Asientos hills is about 2 miles from Asientos on the east side. The area between the two mining centers is separated by a low subdued divide which forms the central part of the hills. The district is in a group of isolated hills surrounded by characteristic bolsón plains. The hills rise above the surrounding plains about 6500 to 10,000 ft.; the highest peak is Alta Mira. The two mining districts lie somewhat upon the flanks of the hills at about the same elevation, 7200 ft. The district is an old one and has been known since early in the 17th Century when the mines were worked by the Franciscan Monks. Their mining operations, which were limited to the oxidized ore above the water level, consisted chiefly in extracting silver from the Santa Francisca vein. To judge from the old workings and the remains of surface plant, the operations were on a large scale. By modern mining operations since about 1900, the various mines of the district have been one of the principal sourees of ore for the smelter located at Aguascalientes. Topography The topographic features of the Asientos hills are largely controlled by the character of the underlying rocks. During the Tertiary period, the entire group of hills was probably covered by extrusive volcanic material in the form of cones and lava flows. The central part of these have since been carried away by erosion, so that remnants have been left along the borders of the hills. These remnants form rather conspicuous peaks,

THE constitution diagram of the iron-copper system derived by Daniloff&apos; exhibits, at the iron-rich end, phase fields similar to those of the iron-carbon diagram. At 1484° 1094°, and 850°C there are, respectively, a 6-y-L peritectic, a y-E-Lperitectic, and a a-y-E eutectoid. The phase designated E is copper-rich, containing 4 pct Fe or less according to the temperature. The composition of copper-saturated ferrite (a-solid solution) has been determined previously only twice as a function of temperature. By electrical conductivity measurements, Buchholtz and Köster2 found 3.4 pct Cu in ferrite at a eutectoid temperature of 810°C. They represented the composition of saturated ferrite by the equation, log (%Cu) = 4.32-4125 (1/T) Gregg and Daniloff3 reported that Köster later modified his opinion, raising the indicated eutectoid temperature to 833 °C and the copper content of eutectoid ferrite to 3.7 pct. The literature contains several indications4-7 that the work of Köster and his co-workers is not reliable. Norton,8 using an X-ray method, found that 1.4 pct Cu dissolved in ferrite at the approximate eutectoid temperature of 850°C and that the solubility decreased to about 0.3 pct at 700°C. Below 700°C his experimental data show almost no change in solubility. These findings, although inconsistent with the work of Ruer and Goerens4 and of Smith and Palmer,7 have been used generally since their publication. In investigations involving the observation of arrests in temperature during continuous heating or cooling the precise location of the eutectoid temperature has been obscured by a large hysteresis. The more reliable work 579 where the results are not effected by this hysteresis indicates a eutectoid temperature between 840° and 850°C. The foregoing discrepancies, along with a few observations in this Laboratory relating to the precipitation of copper from ferrite, prompted us to rein-vestigate the lower temperature portion of the Fe-Cu system. In this investigation the solubility of copper in ferrite was obtained by the chemical analysis of high-purity iron equilibrated with copper-silver alloys. This method eliminated the necessity for retaining by a quench the physical state of the specimen existing at the equilibration temperature. In most branches of the mining industry it is a well-recognized fact that care must be taken to protect the mineral deposit from undue physical injury. It is comparatively easy to grasp this idea when the mineral is a solid and the lives of workmen depend directly upon the care with which it is removed from its natural position, but when the product is a liquid drawn up from pools several thousand feet beneath the surface of the ground through openings only a few inches in diameter, it requires some imagination to picture underground conditions and the changes which must often occur. The development of the petroleum deposits of California has been attended by numerous accidents, the results of which are readily noticed at the top of the wells and in the profit and loss accounts of the operators. Determination of the cause of these accidents has been the subject of considerable study, which naturally has fallen upon men familiar with technical methods. The greatest damage to the oil deposits of California has resulted from water finding its way into the oil-bearing sands, and it is the purpose of this paper to set forth briefly this phase of the oil industry. Much of the material here presented has previously appeared in publications issued by the California State Mining Bureau, which, under the direction of State Mineralogist Fletcher McN. Hamilton, has investigated the subject and taken steps toward improvement of conditions. The writer, having been in charge of this branch of the Bureau work, has gained considerable knowledge of existing conditions. Generally speaking, the oil-bearing formations of California are soft, unconsolidated sand beds, separated by clay strata, which are also soft. Some of the sand beds carry water instead of oil. All of the beds are more or less separated, probably being of lenticular shape. Very few of the beds in the oil fields lie flat or undisturbed over any great area. Folding and tilting are common, and faulting also occurs in some of the fields. The accumulation of oil is not confined to any single structural feature, such as the anticline, but occurs in many other structural features. TANTALUM metal has a number of unique properties which give it widespread application in modern technology and in research. In electronic apparatus involving high temperatures in vacuo some of the refractory metals become brittle. Tantalum retains its ductility at elevated temperatures, and this property, together with its low vapor pressure and its ability to absorb gases, make it important in this field. Its chemical inertness in the presence of acids, halogens, and other corrosive media, makes it useful in chemical apparatus and in neuro and orthopedic surgical applications. As an addition to tungsten carbide in steel-cutting grades of cemented-carbide tools, the carbides of tantalum and of its sister element columbium have found considerable use. The present-day method1 of manufacturing tantalum is to sinter a powder compact of the metal in vacuo. Because tantalum- columbium alloys are difficult to work and since tantalum ores almost always contain columbium, the two metals must be separated chemically, the products of the separation being generally in the form of potassium tantalum fluoride and potassium columbium oxyfluoride. These salts are used in fused-salt electrolytic baths from which coarse metallic powder is deposited as a sponge at the cathode. Finer powder can be made from the coarse product or from tantalum scrap by first submitting it to an embrittling heat treatment in hydrogen and then crushing it. The fine hydrogen- containing powder may subsequently be degassed in vacuo at a high temperature. Prompted by the success of others2,3 in the magnesium reduction of titanium and zirconium halides, one of the authors under- took4 an investigation of the thermo- chemistry of the reaction between solid magnesium and gaseous tantalum penta-chloride, a subject which had not previously been studied. He found that the heat of formation of tantalum pentachloride is approximately 364,250 cal per mol at temperatures lower than the melting point of magnesium. A value of 83 units was found for the standard entropy at these temperatures. With these values, it was shown that magnesium and tantalum pentachloride are capable of reacting exothermically at temperatures less than the melting point of magnesium, and that no great violence is to be expected when these substances are heated together. The exothermic nature of the reaction indicated that the process should be efficient and should not require much externally applied energy. Tantalum pentachloride is not commonlv made commercially, and any process using it therefore involves the subsidiary problem of producing and handling this substance. Except for the work of Guillet, who conducted a systematic investigation on the zinc-replacing value of nickel in brass, and extended his investigation with a view to developing commercial high zinc content nickel brasses, the author does not know of any other systematic research on the subject. The most promising commercial alloys and their physical properties obtained by Guillet are given below: These test results scarcely justify the use of such quantities of so expensive a metal, and could have been obtained from ordinary commercial brass. For purposes of comparison, the physical properties of ordinary brasses, ranging from 70 per cent. to 50.1 per cent. Cu in both the cast and normalized1 conditions are included in &apos;Table 1. These incidentally furnish a useful standard of the properties of castings and of rolled, extruded and forged brass when correctly annealed. A close study of some of the well-known special brasses containing nickel reveals a series of alloys which bewilder by their complexity, and me can only hazard a guess at the function and commercial value of each of the many elements used.
