The use of portable radon detectors has become routine in reconnaissance uranium surveys where water and sediment samples are analyzed in field labs for radon and radium, and in detailed work where drill hole locations are pinpointed by field determinations of radon in soil gas from shallow holes. During the drilling program itself, however, very few operators are taking advantage of radon and radium analyses to decide whether a barren drill hole was a near miss or whether the immediate area can be written off. The technique is effective both above and below the water table.

Recognizing the fact that the problems of the committee named by the Board to prepare the "official ticket" for officers ' and Directors of the Institute are various and difficult; and desiring to assist this committee by setting forth some of the principles that should guide the committee and some of the qualifications that should be required of candidates, the following instructions are formulated and the Secretary is directed to publish them in MINING AND METALLURGY concurrently with the publication of the names of each newly appointed Nominating Committee and to send a copy to each member of the Committee.

IN Chemical Phenomena of Iron Smelting, Mr. Bell gives the weight of materials required to fill furnaces of various sizes at the Clarence Works ; as this differs very much from the weight required for furnaces at Glendon, where anthracite and magnetic and brown iron-ores are used, a comparison is interesting. Taking furnaces at Glendon of 4800 and 11,900 cubic feet capacity and comparing them with the Clarence furnaces of 6000 cubic feet and 11,500 cubic feet, we find that the 4800 cubic feet at Glendon and the 6000 cubic feet at Clarence required respectively-

All manuscripts intended for presentation at the February meeting of the Institute must be in the hands of the Secretary of the Institute not later than Monday, Nov. 23, 1914. This is the date at which the manuscript must be in the hands of the Secretary, and is not the mailing date upon which it leaves the author's hands. In case manuscripts are sent to members of Technical Committees, they must be in the hands of the Technical Committee a sufficient time in advance of Nov. 23 so that they may be in the hands of the Secretary on the date indicated.

THE production of oil in Ohio, in 1924, was characterized by no marked or surprising change. Low prices and the absence of promising territory made the year quiet. As is well known, Ohio has reached a state of "settled production," and the most that can be expected for the ensuing few years is to maintain the output at approximately the present figure 1921 7,335,000 1922 6,781,000 1923 7,085,000 Geographically, the Ohio fields may be divided into three areas, each of which gets its main supply of oil from a different stratigraphic horizon.

IN order to put sufficient work on steel ingots for rails, they must be reduced from about 12 inches square. As this cannot be done at one heat, they are first drawn down to about 7 inches square, and then reheated and rolled into rails. This first reduction or " blooming," is usually done in this country in a 30-inch 3-high rolling-mill, with movable rolls, so as to get several reductions in each set of grooves. A commercially available, portable X-ray spectrograph, lightweight and rugged for vehicle or field camp use, was used to determine Ba, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, Rb, Sr, and Zn in stream sediment geochemical samples. Investigations showed a relative standard deviation of 1-3%, detection limits of approximately 100 pg/g and significant matrix effects. Coefficients of correlation greater than 0.9 were obtained between portable X-ray and emission and atomic-absorption spectroscopy analyses. A geochemical map of a known mineralized area showed good agreement with maps prepared by other methods of analysis and sample media.

SELF-DIFFUSION of cobalt has been investigated by Ruder and Birchenall,1, 2 Nix and Jaumot,3 and Gruzin.4 The results for a given tem- perature differ by a factor of about six in the extreme cases with no really close agreement between any two sets of data. The first two groups of investigators employed the decrease of surface activity method. Since Ruder and Birchenall have shown that the values obtained from this method are sensitive to the surface preparation, it seemed desirable to perform a few check experiments by a method not open to this objection.

URANIUM plant operations of the Kerr-McGee Oil Industries at Shiprock, N. M., began in December 1954. As originally designed, the plant treated Plateau carnotite ores by the acid cure process, which dissolved both uranium and vanadium minerals. After 16 hr of acid curing, the ore was conveyed to an agitator and leached for 2 hr in acid liquor at a pH of 1.0. The leach pulp was then separated at 100 mesh in a classifier, the sands continuing through a washing classifier circuit and the slimes going to a countercurrent decantation system of four thickeners.

At the planning stage for this plant it was scheduled that the plant operate at a low energy consumption. After start up in 1973 it was established that outcome was even better than the forecast. In view of the 1977 ore market it was decided to operate the plant at half capacity. This initiated efforts to reoptimize the process in order to hold back expected increase in energy consumption. The result from this work proves that a detailed study and tuning of the process can not only avoid expected increase, but also reduce specific energy consumption.

There has been considerable discussion of late as to the best method of determining the silver-contents of sulphides of silver resulting from the leaching of silver-ores, and also as to the relative merits of the crucible- and the scorification-method for the determination of the silver-contents of ores. From one year operating budgets, planning processes have evolved into sophisticated analyses of alternative long-term future strategies and the management issues and practices which relate to their implementation. Increasing complexity within the business environment has led to numerous planning methodologies and extensive use of computers to analyze operating and financial information. All of these developments, however, have not supplanted the real need for decision-makers to continue to give important weight to the intuitive or soft data inputs into the planning process.

The approach proposed in this paper is, as stated by the authors, an update of methods well discussed in the literature. The authors are to be congratulated for their excellent effort in quantifying a difficult problem with realistic cost data. Economic analysis of the components of a mine ventilation system is complicated by both the dynamic nature of the system and the uncertainty as to the time when system changes occur. We wish to address three specific areas of this paper which require further consideration: shaft designed air capacity, shaft location, and economic criteria used within the analysis
