The paper is a summary of information on Canadian deposits of uranium and thorium up to the end of 1948, prepared by geologists of Eldorado Mining and Refining Ltd. and by the specialist on uranium deposits for the Geological Survey of Canada. The paper contains a history of Canadian uranium and thorium discoveries, a working classification of the deposits, fairly detailed descriptions of the Eldorado mine and of properties in northern Saskatchewan, and shorter accounts of several other discoveries.

What is experience worth? Representatives from the Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum Societies discussed the question as part of the 1970 Annual AIME Meeting held in Denver, Colo. the week of February 15. Petroleum engineer-consultant, Michel T. Halbouty of Houston, Tex. offered his own clarification of present-day employer-employee relationships in engineering as a whole. "Longevity does not equal experience on the job. Further, when employees are considering salary increases and promotions, job performance is considered all the time; experience two- thirds of the time and length of employment one- half the time." He added, "worth is really what the employee can get for it and experience is essential to survival." Halbouty also noted that salary and responsibility is a function of man's value to his company and is about "as discrediting as grey hair." As far as the engineer is concerned, he reported, the company's ability to pay is, in large measure, not considered. From the company's viewpoint, however, the employee is expected to learn his first year on the job. His second year, he is expected to make his presence felt, Should he require three years to orient himself he might soon be looking for another job. The petroleum engineer pointed out that when the employee wants to know why the salary scale tends to plateau off in later years, most employers react by recognizing that employees "flatten themselves rather than the company flattening them."

Preliminary estimates indicate that world consumption of petroleum and related fuels in 1938 will be close to 1,908,000,000 bbl., or approximately 7,000,000 bbl. less than in 1937. This total does not include military consumption in foreign countries, which for obvious reasons is not made public. Foreign military consumption in any one year, however, is approximately represented by the difference between the total production of petroleum and related fuels and the "partial total" consumption above noted, after adding any decrease, or subtracting any increase in stocks in the United States. Fig. 1 illustrates this "difference" and shows that in 1937 and 1938, owing to the wars in China and Spain and the possibility of armed conflict in Central Europe, foreign military consumption—and possibly additions to foreign stocks—increased nearly 70,000,000 bbl. in 1937 over 1936 and remained at this high rate throughout 1938. No official information on foreign oil stocks is available to the writers. Table 1, recently published, purports to give the oil in storage in some of the European countries, but it is not known whether the figures include oil stocks for military purposes. It should be noted that with the annexation by Germany of Austria and part of Czechoslovakia the consumption of the country has increased to 53,000,000 bbl., which is about 36,000,000 short of the German produc-

The fate of generations yet unborn lies in man's hands. Shall it be prosperity, a high standard of living, and the development of spiritual values; or ruin, misery, and a reversion to jungle law? World affairs move in high gear, at high tension, in many directions. Each nation fears the other fellow- races, crosses the white line on curves, skids, takes its half in the center; and the devil take the hindmost. For one, the United States is on the horns of dilemma; it must insure a flow of raw materials of industry and world-wide markets in order that the American people may maintain high standards of living, but the commitments of the United States cannot be fulfilled without trimming present standards of comfort and convenience back to the level of perhaps a quarter of a century ago. A way must be found to retreat without anarchy at home as well as abroad. Everything is relative and all things change, and change is the essence of civilization. It is now clear that man has not kept pace with changes of all kinds, some of them overnight, during the past 50 years. Conventionality has led to stagnation; man now seeks learning of all kinds at an accelerated pace, but men should not be educated beyond their native intelligence for they must be able to apply their education. ANYTHING that may be said about "too much coal" must seem rather incongruous just at this time when two-thirds of the mines in the United States have been idle for nearly four months and a temporary coal shortage looms as more and more of a possibility. It is the purpose of this article, however, to deal primarily with the fundamental ills of the bituminous-coal industry, which, when summed up, can be expressed in one word-overdevelopment. During recent years the bituminous-coal industry in the United States has been seldom, almost never, in a state of normal business health with production run-ning evenly, prices steady and the market absorbing the output from week to week. There has been either a condition of feverish activity or apathetic sluggish-ness. We have had, for example, the intense strain on production during the war years with heatless days and lightless nights, followed by the slump late in 1918 which lasted through the greater part of 1919 when coal was a drug on the market. Then came the panicky demand of 1920. Competitive buying forced prices up to the highest levels in history. This demand in turn fell off suddenly in November, 1920, and the market remained apparently paralyzed all through 1921. During the latter year, lack of buying forced intermit-tent suspension of mining in all fields and prices averaged less than actual cost of production.

The purpose of this paper is to present an application of computer technology to assist the mineral company financial executive in assessing exchange risks. The paper is divided into five parts: Background, Translation Approaches, Theory, Empirical Validation, and Conclusion. BACKGROUND Exchange risk results from a change in the rate of exchange between a host and a home country's currencies. Legitimate reasons exist for changes in the currency exchange rates among countries in a world with over a hundred different currencies. These reasons include: different economic growth rates, social factors, cultural heritages, and political motivations. The problem of exchange rate changes are perennial and exist whether the world operates on exchange rates or floating exchange rate practices. The cause of the problem is trade and international payment imbalances. If one accepts the premise that exchange rates fluctuate over time, then the mineral company financial executive faces a continual process of reassessment of the impact of exchange rate changes on the financial worth of his company. (1) The mineral company financial executive prepares balance sheets and income statements that are audited by certified public account- ants annually for shareholders, bankers, and tax authorities. The financial executive translates assets and equities denominated in foreign currencies into domestic dollars, e.g., Japanese firms convert to Yen, French firms convert to Francs, and so on. WHOEVER has occasion to judge tin in its whiteness from the testimony of his eyes alone would surely believe it to be purest silver, or something that comes very near to it in nature. This is even more so when, on handling, it is found to be harder than lead, to which it can be said to have a greater and closer resemblance. But whoever has actual experience with tin knows that none of the other metals is less similar to it than silver. For silver mixes with every metal, as does gold; and they unite together, and the others do likewise; and except for their color they change their natures but little. But this metal tin, wherever it is found, acts like a powerful poison which envenoms and corrupts the others; and it does this not only with large quantities but also with every small amount; indeed just the trace remaining where it has been melted is enough to embrittle silver and gold as well as iron and copper. The greater the quantity of it in these, the greater are its effects. Speculators of natural causes say that this fact arises from its great wateriness, which is very subtle and poorly decocted and almost like that of quicksilver. This wateriness, then, by means of its subtlety which joins itself with metals, imposes itself into that unctuous and viscous material which renders them flexible, and thus deprives them of their toughness

Regarding the technical paper by Thomas E. Finch and Edward L. Fidler, "Recovery of Stray (Thin) Seams in Western Coal Mining." I would like to comment on this subject. In western Canada, most strip mines encounter thin seam coal or rider seams. Although the paper addresses the problems and costs associated with the recovery of this coal, it does not take into account what the savings are. Without looking at the savings, the "Total Objective" is of course not clear. I feel that in a stripping operation the mine can spend per ton (of the thin seam) up to their dragline stripping costs per ton to recover a rider seam or thin seam. The reasoning behind this is simply that this is the price the mine will have to pay to expose an equivalent amount of coal without the recovery of these thin seams. If the mine can recover a rider seam or thin seam for less than the dragline operating costs per ton, a savings will be realized. By recovering a thin seam or rider seam, the life of an ore body is extended by that amount of coal not thrown away. In addition, the cost of land acquisition, associated permits, capital, and reclamation will be reduced as more coal is delivered for a given area. When the above points are considered, the recovery of these thin seams can be very profitable and indeed worth recovering.

FOR the benefit of those of our members who may be asked what they know about Mr. Hoover's connec-tion with the Kaiping coal mines in China and who will naturally wish to appear thoroughly well informed on the subject, we reprint below an authoritative state-ment, recently made to the Japan Advertiser, by Tang Shao-yi, former premier of China, now retired to his country home at Tang Chia. "Information has reached me at my retreat that persons in America and China insinuate that Herbert Hoover acted dishonorably in dealings involving the Chinese Engineering and Mining Company a quarter of a century ago. I be-lieve myself the only Chinese living who was closely iden-tified with that company during Mr. Hoover's connection. My uncle founded the company and my family always has been a large shareholder and, therefore, I possess direct knowledge of its history. "I am actuated in this statement by a sense of justice and also gratitude for Mr. Hoover's acts in rescuing my family during the Boxer uprising. Mr. Hoover's record in China is clean and honorable, highly creditable and in many ways remarkable. Legal action brought in London in 1905 occurred after Mr. Hoover left the company. There were not any charges against Mr. Hoover and he was not a de-fendant in the lawsuit, but an important witness whose testimony helped the Chinese shareholders to save their property.

Professor Somasundaran has given an excellent presentation of the numerous problems which remain to be solved before the selective aggregation of fine particulates is likely to see broad commercial application in the beneficiation of mineral fines. However it is useful, I think, to reiterate some of the major problem areas. The over-riding factor which has limited the development of selective aggregation techniques is that processes such as coagulation and flocculation tend to be inherently non-selective. Conditions which favor the aggregation of one kind of fine particles usually favor the aggregation of all kinds of particles. As Professor Somasundaran has pointed out, the state of aggregation of a fine-particle dispersion is primarily determined by the forces of interaction between the individual particles. In most systems, the dominant forces are: 1. van der Waals - London Dispersion forces between the particles themselves 2. electrical double layer forces 3. steric forces between adsorbed layers on the surfaces of the particles. The London Dispersion forces between like particles are always attractive, but for dissimilar particles dispersed in a fluid medium can, in some cases, lead to a net repulsion. Electrical double layer forces always lead to repulsion between like particles but can, again, cause either attraction or repulsion for dissimilar materials. The steric forces, which are by far the least understood of the three types, can also lead to attraction or repulsion depending on condi-

FOUR years ago several mining operators shook their heads and predicted that Goldfield Consolidated Mines Co. would never be able to mine the zinc-lead ores from the 550 to 650 level areas of the Deep Creek mine. Their prediction was not without apparent justification, for everywhere one gazed, water was spurting or dripping; every hole that was drilled produced more and more water under pressures of 220 to 250 psi, all from apparently unrelated channels. When the volume of water from one level alone reached 2200 gpm with a possible flow of 5000 to 6000 gpm if the area were fully tapped, development work was brought to a halt and the few holes into the water area were grouted off under contract. As zinc prices had completely deteriorated, the workings were allowed to flood. Upon reopening the mine, in late 1950, it was discovered that the relatively few sacks of cement used in the previous grouting operation had done a tremendous amount of good. Consequently it was decided to systematically drill test holes with a longhole machine and diamond drill and to seal all holes with a cement grout solution. After 30,000 ft of drilling, and the pumping of over 20,000 sacks of cement, 15,000 of which were placed in the supposedly impossible 650 level, the company was successful in literally forcing the water out of the ore zones and opening up large tonnages for subsequent extraction.

C.-I would like to hear some further detail as to the California deposits. L. C. MORGANROTH, Pittsburgh, Pa.-We have examined the California deposits at various times; I have been over practically all of them myself. These deposits are all of the massive variety. While it is possible that it could be mined and used for metallurgical purposes, it is not feasible because it costs too much. At the present time magnesite which is mined in California is used in the making of plaster, or by the paper trade. Careful figures show that if the California magnesite could be delivered to Atlantic seaports in the crude state at not over $4 a gross ton, and assuming that it would give the same results as the Austro-Hungarian magnesite, it would be cheaper to use the latter. It is also more difficult to dead-burn the massive magnesite, for while it starts to give up its gas readily, the difficulty consists in driving off the last few per cent., and unless this is driven off the magnesite will absorb C02 from the air, so that in a few months it may have 10 or 12 per cent. The densities of liquid tin, lead, and Sn-Pb alloys have been measured over a range of temperature above the liquidus. In all cases, data can be adequately represented by an equation of the type p = a + bT. For pure tin, the values of a and b are, respectively, 7.139 and 7.125 x 10-4, and for pure lead, 11.060 and 12.220 x 10-4. At constant temperature, molar volumes in the Sn-Pb system vary linearly with composition. DURING the course of a long-term program at the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, Ottawa, Canada, the densities of liquid tin, lead, and Pb-Sn alloys were studied. The work reported herein draws on two sets of results independently achieved by Thresh, on the one hand, and by Crawley and White, on the other. EXPERIMENT The method and apparatus were originated by Thresh and have been described in detail in Mines Branch reports.172 In operation, the 14 cu cm graphite pycnometer is put in the furnace as shown in Fig. 1 after a machined charge has been placed inside the pycnometer and the lid screwed down. The dimensions of the charge are such that, upon melting, a small excess of liquid metal is discharged through the capillary hole to displace the weighted float above. In recent years there has been interest displayed in the precipitation phenomena occurring in austenitic alloys based on the binary Fe-Ni system.1'2 Previous communications have been extended covering the kinetics of clustering in the Fe-Ni-Ti system and the effect of cluster size on subsequent mechanical properties.3'4 To a great extent the question of coherency, which has a dominant role in determining the mechanical properties, is dictated by the degree of misfit between the precipitate and matrix. Thus, the change in lattice parameter of the matrix with composition is an important variable that should be examined. The lattice parameter, ao, of austenite was determined for Fe-29.75 Ni-1 to 6 Ti and Fe-27 Ni-1 to 10 Ti alloys in this study. The alloys used in this investigation were melted in a vacuum induction furnace from a starting stock of plast iron (99.95), electrolytic nickel (99.9), and ti- tanium sheet (99.5) in a MgO crucible. The alloy compositions in atomic percent are given in Table I and their relative position in the Fe-Ni-Ti ternary is indicated in Fig. 1. The chemical analyses were taken from the homogenized bulk materials treated in a manner related earlier.3 A diamond file was used to obtain powder from the bulk.
