The success in providing adequate ventilation to the active faces of a coal mine for all methods of mining depends upon good face control and the air distribution and control system. A good system provides overcasts, air locks, regulators and bleeders so that an adequate flow of air will be confined to the working places with least opportunity for interruption, and that a flow of air is maintained, however small, across the worked out area to the bleeder and away from men and equipment at all times. In gaseous mines, it is just as important to satisfy effective bleeding as it is to satisfy the air volume requirements in the operating splits. The two requirements go hand in hand. Although not complicated, ventilation and methane drainage in longwall mining in a gaseous mine require careful forethought and adequate facilities to make them safe.

During the last 30 years the inductive electro- magnetic method has been used chiefly in the search for massive sulphide mineralization. This application has met with varying degrees of success and in recent years has resulted in discovery of several large orebodies. Little has been written concerning its use in exploration for soft iron ores, but one of the present authors has reported on experiments with massive magnetic deposits. To augment the exploration tools available to geologists in delineating iron orebodies, Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. and McPhar Geophysics Ltd. undertook in 1953 to apply the inductive electromagnetic method to Cleveland-Cliffs properties in the Lake Superior region. As a result of this project, equipment has been developed that enables simultaneous transmission of two audio frequency waves, and the field technique and interpretative procedure involved have furthered exploration in the district significantly.

RECENT interest in germanium centers around its use as a semi-conductor of electricity in electronic devices. It is generally believed that germanium transistors, diodes, triodes, photocells, and rectifiers will largely replace the present-day vacuum tubes. The germanium electronic devices are much smaller, lighter, and more resistant to shock, and they require only a small fraction of current required for conventional devices. Hence only a small amount of heat is given off by the equipment. This development will require many times the quantity of germanium now being produced, which in 1948 was approximately 1000 lb1 and was obtained almost entirely from zinc ores in Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. LAVES and Wallbaum' reported that the phases occurring at the compositions TiFe, TiRu, and TiOs, which are stable over a wide range of temperatures and are separated from neighboring phases by wide two phase fields, have a CsC1-type ordered structure. For TiRu and TiOs, this was recently confirmed by C. B. Jordan.2 Recent results of Greenfield and Beck3 show that solid solutions with ruthenium of the body-centered-cubic elements vanadium and tantalum (and presumably also of colum-bium) in group Va of the periodic table undergo CsC1-type ordering. Although detailed phase diagrams for these systems are not yet available, it would appear that these ordered structures are separated from the neighboring body-centered-cubic solid solutions by relatively narrow two phase fields.

In situ mining and dump leaching has been practiced for years. Recent environmental concern over conventional mining and milling techniques has rendered in situ mining more attractive. While there are many environmental advantages to in situ mining, there are disadvantages which, if ignored, can lead to environmental damages, followed by stringent control. The environmental advantages and disadvantages of the various types of in situ mining operations are discussed. Current legislation and regulations governing in situ mining are cited, together with a suggested program of environmental monitoring designed to protect the mining company as well as the environment. Suggestions are made for possible solution of existing pollution problems associated with previous mining activities by heap-leaching techniques. Present and indicated control of subsurface injection is traced, because of the many similarities in philosphy and monitoring requirements to in situ mining.

Conventional methods of drill hole site selection are reviewed briefly. Two approaches using geostatistics are then discussed, both of which have been shown to yield improved results. Finally, a branch and bound algorithm is described which will select the best locations for drilling from a user specified number of possible drill sites. Two options are discussed. First, the user can specify a maximum drilling investment or a maximum number of drill holes and the program will select the locations yielding the minimum estimation variance. This amounts to getting the most for a given investment. Alternatively, a maximum tolerable estimation variance can be specified and the program will select the number and location of the drill holes to obtain the desired information at a minimum cost. Another benefit of the approach is the quantification of the tradeoffs between investment and information obtained.

Elastic and viscoelastic behavior of three rocks-Tennessee sandstone, Barre granite, and Indiana limestone-was studied experimentally under uniaxial tensile stress. Cylindrical specimens of these rocks, about 1.0 in. diam and 2.0 in. long, were subjected to incremental constant stress history under uniaxial tension. The stress was held constant for a period of 40 min at each stress level. During this period, longitudinal and transverse strains on specimens were continuously monitored. The straintime history at each stress level was analyzed for elastic and viscoelastic parameters of a generalized Burger model. The viscoelastic parameters under uniaxial tensile stress were compared with those under uniaxial compressive stress. The experimental setup, experimental procedure, analysis techniques, and more significant results are described. This limited research effort clearly indicates the importance of the mechanical behavior of geologic material under tensile stresses.

During the last few years the use of base-metal thermocouples has increased very considerably in various industries, due to the necessity for more precise control of temperatures. The base-metal couple has the advantages of being robust to a surprising degree, cheap as compared with platinum couples, sufficiently accurate for most operations, rapid in indicating changes in temperature, easily renewed or repaired, and of generating a much higher electromotive force than the noble-metal couples. There are, however, some factors, such as indicating and recording instruments, the insulation on the elements, the constancy and homogeneity of the wires, and the resistance to oxidation in the furnace, that limit the. Usefulness of the temperature-measuring device. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss in what manner these factors affect the usefulness of the couples.

GRINDING is a large and costly part of Portland cement manufacture. Prior to clinkering in the rotary kiln, raw materials are ground to a fineness of 80 to 90 pct passing 200 mesh. Then, after burning and cooling, the resulting clinker is ground to about 92 pct passing 325 mesh. In the cement industry the most favored method of grinding has always been by impact and attrition of a ball charge in a rotating mill. Other types of mills, in which materials are ground between die rings and rollers, or between die rings and large balls, are sometimes used for single-stage grinding and often for preliminary grinding followed by grinding in ball-type mills. Their efficiency is usually high, but maintenance and repair costs are high also, and the ball-type mill continues to be the most widely used.

Pyrite concentrates produced at the Olympias mines, Northern Greece, show an unusually high gold and silver content (16-20 and 25-40 ppm respectively), associated with the presence of arsenopyrite; their high As content (5-8%) has hindered their utilization so far. In the present paper a simple and environmentally safe method that permits their complete utilization for the production of SO2 gas, As203, and the recovery of Au and Ag is described. According to this method, the pyrites are subjected to a single-stage oxidizing roasting in a fluid bed reactor. The precious metals, and approximately 45% of the contained As, remain with the cinders, while the rest of the As is removed with the SO2 - bearing gases and can be recovered by suitable treatment. The gases, after further cleaning, can be utilized for the production of sulfuric acid.

The total value of world offshore mineral production in 1970 is estimated around $180 million-less than 1% of the total onshore value for that year (Table 1). As such, offshore mining is still a relatively small industry. Commercial operations center around production from unconsolidated surficial deposits lying in shallow waters of the continental margins. While minerals recovered include sand and gravel, iron, tin, limestone, and aragonite, other possible mineral targets have been identified For consolidated deposits, only two offshore operations are known to exist. They are Alaska Barite Co.'s Castle Island mine (see p. 46) and Freeport Minerals Co.'s Grand Isle mine in Louisiana. At Grand Isle, sulfur is recovered from an offshore platform utilizing the Frasch process. Also, Freeport recently announced reactivation of its offshore Caminada sulfur mine at an estimated capital cost of $23 million.

A novel process is described for the selective flotation of scheelite from low-grade (- 0.5% W03) tungsten ores having appreciable quantities of calcareous and siliceous gangue minerals. Specifically developed for the Tempiute, Nevada facility of Union Carbide, the process yields tungsten concentrates exceeding 15 percent W03 with at least 85 percent recovery. This condition was not achieved through conventional processes. This process consists of conditioning the ore pulp with judicious amounts of lime, followed by soda ash and sodium silicate as modifiers. The scheelite is then floated using a mixture of oleic and naphthenic acids as collector. Contrary to the common observation as to the deleterious effects of calcium in fatty acid flotation systems, lime addition is found to be beneficial in achieving satisfactory results. The process has also shown excellent results on a Brazilian scheelite ore.

A reliable technique has been developed for producing single crystals of tantalum in the form of small diameter wires. By suitably heat treating these and polycrystal samples, first in an oxygen atmosphere and finally in vacuum, it has been found possible to reduce residual resistivities to 10-3 microhm-cm. The purity of these samples is thus comparable to the purities obtained in zone-refined silver, copper, and aluminum. THE growth and purification of pure single crystals of the transition metals is, in general, difficult. The high melting and annealing temperatures of these metals make it necessary to employ rather special techniques in any crystallization process. In addition, the transition metals show a great affinity for and are easily contaminated by nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon. In the upgrading of finely disseminated iron ores, selective desliming is the critical step that must be controlled to achieve efficient flotation. A prerequisite for selective desliming is a properly-dispersed pulp; sodium silicate is commonly used as a dispersant. The mechanism by which sodium silicate acts as a dispersant in the presence of calcium ions was examined by streaming potential measurements, settling tests, abstraction density determinations, selective flocculation tests, and scanning electron microscope observations. The study established that calcium silicate precipitates on the mineral surfaces dispersed the pulp. Although sodium silicate was a nonselective dispersant, the addition of corn starch aided flocculation of goethite over quartz at low silicate additions, but became ineffective at higher silicate levels. A model is presented to explain the dispersant mechanism of sodium silicate in the presence of calcium ion for selective flocculation of iron ores.

The Empire IV expansion is on schedule for completion in January 1980; Hibbing Taconite's 2.7 million ltpy* expansion should be finished late in 1979; and Reserve Mining's tailing disposal project is on target for April 1980. Erie Mining Co., the first to bring 170-ton haulage trucks to the Mesabi Range, reports excellent operating results, and Inland Steel expects to produce 80% of its pellets in 1979 using coal rather than oil. One Michigan mine has so many inspectors that it has hired a school bus to transport them around the operation; and a contractor reports that mine construction projects of the future may require the training of 15,000 workers. All of this was covered at the 52nd Annual Minnesota Section AIME Meeting and the 40th University of Minnesota Mining Symposium, a joint event held each January in Duluth.

At the meeting of the Institute held in St. Louis, in October, 1886 (Transactions, xv., 448), I presented a paper upon the above subject. From the well-known action of certain solvents on phosphide and phosphate of iron, the conclusion was then reached, founded on analyses, that phosphide and phosphate of iron must be present in all iron. But this conclusion was based upon the reactions obtained in the analyses of iron phosphide and phosphate, in which the phosphorus existed in conditions different from those found in commercial iron. In the former, the phosphorus is concentrated ; in the latter, diffused. This fact left a reasonable ground for doubting the existence of phosphoric acid in commercial irons. The work described in this paper is sponsored by the Bureau of Mines for the purpose of accelerating the drilling of roof bolt holes and reducing the quantity of materials needed to fill each hole. A high-speed, small-hole drill has been fabricated and tested in the laboratory. High Priority has been given to safety, reliability, and compatibility with underground coal mining practice. The combination of drag bits and erosion jets is designed for high penetration rate, long wear life, and uniform hole size in a variety of sedimentary strata. A reliable high-pressure, high-speed swivel feeds water to the bit at about 4 L/min (1 gpm). The duplex hydraulic intensifier which drives the jets has a 40-kW (30-hp) capacity. Results of recent full-scale laboratory testing (Now. 1977) are presented.

A simulation model has been developed to find out the possibility of improving the industrial closed-circuit wet grinding operations. The model involves a continuous tumbling mill in combination with a hydrocyclone to recycle the oversize material back to the mill. The mill is described by the breakage, i.e. the selection and the distribution, functions, co-ordinated with the diffusional mixing along the axis. The cyclone classifier is characterized by the partition function with allowance for the non-selective separation of part of the feed material into the underflow. The computer program developed incorporates an interactive capability to modify the operating conditions of the system whenever needed. The results are analysed for the operational conditions characterizing the mill and the classifier. Besides the steady state conditions some observations are also made about the dynamic responses of the closed circuit grinding system.

Southwestern Utah is well known for its scenic attractions. The beauties of Bryce Canyon, Zion Canyon and the Grand Canyon are of world renown. Thusly, Cedar City is known, at least by the local Chamber of Commerce, as the Gateway to the Utah Parks. However, of the thousands of tourists flocking to Utah's many points of interest by way of Cedar City, few realize that any mining takes place in the vicinity, in spite of the fact that iron mines have been in continuous operation for 40 years. The Pinto-Iron Springs Mining District is only 15 miles west of Cedar City, and is the largest iron ore producing district in the West. In recent years, the shipments have ranged from 2% to 4 million tons per year making Utah the fifth-ranking state in iron ore production.
