The October meeting of the Mining and Geological Society, Lehigh University, was held in the Eckley B. Coxe Mining Laboratory, and was called to order at 8:15 p. m., by President R. L. McCann. After the reading of the minutes of the previous meeting, a short business session was held, for the purpose of electing a Vice-President to succeed G. S. Borden, who has left college. Nominees for the office were: H. J. Sloman, P. S. Justice, L. Sargeant. Dr. F. F. Mr. Juvkam-Wold's article is a timely and much needed presentation of the method of depressurization to reduce ground- water inflow into mine shafts. The article is very informative and discusses the effects of depressurization upon shaft inflows adequately. However, the article omits a discussion of another important benefit of depressurization: the reduction of potential for artesian burst or, as it is also called, floor heave. Confined aquifer systems (artesian aquifers) can contain water under several hundred pounds per square inch (psi) of pressure. Coal was produced in this state, by white men, at an earlier date than in any state west of the Mississippi River, and for many years its production was larger than that of any state in that area. The coal immediately adjacent to St. Louis was mined commercially earlier than elsewhere because of a ready market which could be reached by teams. Generally the coal seams are more or less "spotty" in character, and in many places openings made in thick coal could only be mined for a few years. All of the data available from state survey reports, county histories and a few other sources are shown in Table 66.

Garth Crosby has written an excellent geologic description of the deposits surrounding the Gem stocks in the Coeur d'Alene district. The ore deposits in the area of the Gem stocks may hold the key to the age and mineralization history of the entire Coeur d'Alene district. A recent isotopic study of the Coeur d'Alene district in this laboratory illustrates that a classical geologic interpretation of these deposits, with its implications for the whole district, may lead to erroneous conclusions. For this reason it seems pertinent to submit a summary of these results and an interpretation of the mineralizing history of the Coeur d'Alene districts.

Percussion drilling with tungsten carbide insert button bits ranks among the most significant advances in both underground and surface drilling in medium and hard rock formations. Getting top performance and life from these upfront components is not particularly difficult if one pays attention to the basics in operation and maintenance. For some reason, a few of the essential operating and maintenance steps for getting the most from these tools seem to have gotten turned around; instead of operating at the near optimum levels, some miners, in following myths or misunderstandings about them, are shortchanging their optimal utilization. Let's examine the two most harmful ones.

Extraction of uranium from ores is being accomplished by processes which, for the most part, subject the entire ore to acid or carbonate leaching. Ore deposits with a U3O8 content below 0.10 pct U3O8 are seldom considered suitable for treatment by leaching. A preliminary concentration that would enrich the uranium content of an ore by a simple, low cost process based on physical properties of the ore might result in some low grade deposits becoming commercial ores. In addition, the process might be employed in existing operations to reduce transportation and leaching costs and to increase capacity of existing leaching plants.

Untensioned, fully grouted, steel bars (dowels) up to 30 m long and 45 mm in diameter were used to reinforce rock slopes several hundred metres high, excavated for a hydroelectric project near Revelstoke, British Columbia. These dowels were successfully used to prevent surface rock from loosening, to prevent sliding on interconnected discontinuities and to prevent sliding of relatively intact rock on a thin shear zone. Because the interaction between rock slopes and dowels is not well understood, critical slopes were extensively monitored. Based on the experience from Revelstoke and elsewhere, it appears to be worthwhile, in most circumstances, to reconsider the need for tensioning rock anchors.

The Mexican Government is building a mill at Churunibave in Sonora to handle lead, zinc, and copper ores. This development was sparked by increased mining activity in Mexico and Arizona caused by the Korean war. Pickands Mather, acting for a group of iron ore producers, is negotiating an agreement with Steep Rock Iron Mines, Ltd. to explore and perhaps lease iron ore property covering more than 1000 acres in the Steep Rock Lake area in Western Ontario. Plans call for the early commencement of an exploratory program. Other members of the group by Pickands Mather are Bethlehem Steel, Youngstown Sheet & Tube, the Steel Co. of Canada, and Interlake Iron Corp.

The Engineering Societies Building is owned by the United Engineering Society which is composed of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, the four national engineering societies known as the Founder Societies. Its erection, and that of the Engineers Club which adjoins, was made possible through the generosity of Mr. Andrew Carnegie, Honorary Member, who in 1903 contributed $1,500,000 for the purpose. The Founder Societies purchased the land on which the Engineering Societies Building stands and the Engineers Club the land for its building.

EXISTING distribution data' for silicon between liquid iron and silver at steelmaking temperatures, 1500" to 1600°C, has made activity relationships in liquid silver-silicon alloys desirable as a method of determining the silicon activity in molten iron. To this end, through the use of radioactive Ag110 and the molecular beam technique described in a previous paper,' the vapor pressure of silver as a function of temperature has been measured over three silver-silicon alloys containing 3.9, 9.3, and 15.4 atomic pct (eutectic composition) silicon. DURING recent years thermal drying of fine coal has increased at a tremendous rate, but very little discussion of the several excellent units has found its way into print. This is particularly true for operating and maintenance costs, and the operator who is faced with his first fine coal drying installation must depend chiefly on hearsay when trying to determine what his drying costs will be. This article presents the maintenance and operating costs for the seven drying units now installed in preparation plants of Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co. and lists other cost information that should be obtained before any particular drying unit is selected.

Minerals research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines embraces the mining and metallurgical problems of some 80 metals and nonmetals excluding the mineral fuels. It requires the energies and talents of about 1400 persons, almost half of whom are professionally trained in the physical sciences or engineering. Of approximately $13 million appropriated to the Bureau for minerals programs in Fiscal Year 1962, 76% has been allotted to technologic research and 24% to resources examination and appraisal. In addition, almost $2 million will be made available to the Bureau for minerals research from other Government sources and from private organizations that wish to utilize Bureau experience and capabilities in cooperative studies.
