The challenge to designers of bulk materials handling systems is to apply the existing technology in areas where it has not been used and to foster better, cheaper and safer job performance. The Dashaveyor Co., a subsidiary of The Bendix Corp., built and tested a pilot system at Copper Range's White Pine mine. Based upon this success, a prototype system development was begun in 1967 to test the concepts in a full-scale, realistic environment.

In a former paper read at the Washington meeting of the Institute, February, 1881,' I presented a general view of the geology and veins of Tombstone as then developed. Considerable additions have been made to our knowledge of the oredeposits since that date, nearly all the mines having been worked down to the general wster-level of the district. This water was a bar to further progress in depth and costly pumps were erected at the Grand Central mine and at the Contention. By the united action of these pumps the water was gradually lowered, not only in these two mines, but in all the important mines of the district. Pending a consolidation of interests, or an equitable distribution of the cost of unwatering, both pumping-plants were destroyed by fire, and the mines were closed

ENGINEERING is the art of control of men, matter, and energy in timely concert to provide economically the material needs of man. Control requires knowledge of the thing to be controlled and of proven methods of controlling. Knowledge of man comprises understanding of what he is and of his reactions as an individual and in the mass to his surroundings and to other men. Knowledge of matter comprises understanding of its fundamental nature, its methods of combining into multitudes of animate and inanimate forms, the properties of these forms and their various utilities, their sources and availability. Knowledge of energy constitutes knowing what is meant by the term, its various forms and sources, the laws of convertibility, and the methods of transformation and transmission.

In determilling the relative rate and in fi~lding the point where different inlpurities containecl in copper-matte are eliminated during the process of a converter-blow, the follo~ving results were obtainecl : A converter was selected which was starting on its sccolld charge. While assaying some copper carbonate ore from the Frazer claims, Similakameen, B. C., I noticed that on parting the gold button a deep orange solution was formed. The button gave off pink bands in the nitric acid, which became deep orange at a short distance from it; and as it traveled over the surface of the porcelain dish, it left a deep orange track behind. As the button brightened in the cupel, it appeared to have a bronze color; but I have since found that when amarillium is in large excess of the gold, the button is a very dark gray. The button parted easily. To the orange solution I added a salt (NaCl) solution, shook in a silver testbottle, and filtered. With H2S I obtained a precipitate, which I supposed due to platinum.
