The cost and the speed of sinking a shaft are factors of so great importance in operating a mine, that the data given in Table I., herewith published, will be of interest and value to all engaged in practical mining; and for this reason the data are communicated for permanent and accessible record in our Transactions. The figures 'of cost cover the period from January 1, 1903, to May 31, 1903, during which time the total depth sunk was 858 ft. So far as I know, the cost of sinking per foot (£13,15s., 11.04d.) of a shaft of the dimensions 21 ft. by 6 ft. in hard rock, is the cheapest yet on record; and the speed of 213.5 ft. per month, which was attained during May, 1903, is also the best record for speed in sinking in rock so hard as that of this shaft. During the period from January 1 to May 31, 1903, there were 144 rounds worked, involving 4,032 holes, of a total depth of 28,963 ft. 2.4 in., which is equivalent to an average depth of 7 ft. 2.2 in. per hole bored. These data are of added interest from the fact that the work was done practically by native labor.

When the subject of plant computers is brought up most people visualize the computer's con- trolling the entire plant with very little operator intervention. Actually, this picture is true today in only a limited number of cases and will certainly not be true in the minerals industries for many years to come. There are several ways in which a plant computer can significantly contribute to improving plant operation and closed loop control is only one of these. First of all, for good plant control, two basic requirements must be met. First, the operator must get good information feedback from the process and then he must know what action to take in response to this information. Control information can be obtained through instruments, laboratory analyses, or through simple visual observation. If it is timely and accurate and the operator knows how to use it, then we have the makings of a good plant control system. The computer can be of help in both these areas by getting good data back to the operator and in helping to develop a good control scheme for the plant.

THE handling of native labor is offering an interesting problem that requires diplomacy. It is difficult to induce many of the men to leave their villages and enter into regular work. They do not feel the necessity of manual labor other than to obtain sufficient money to pay the annual hut tax and to buy a little clothing. The ground provides mealies (corn) which means food and beer, he hunts and catches fish, so why work? But gradually, as the native becomes more civilized, his wants increase and his ideas change; he now needs money to supply his desires and eventually he must work more. So in time it is hoped that the labor market will be better supplied.

Electrostatic separation of ores in its present form is generally known as the Huff process, from the name of Charles H. Huff, of Boston, Mass., through whose constant and persistent labors (with the invention of Clinton E. Dolbear as a basis) the successful commercial process embracing separative machinery and the various electrifying devices has been developed step by step, and the finances for the long period of development provided, and the method finally established and recognized throughout the world as an important and successful addition to the ore-dressing department of metallurgy. The permanent field-success of electrostatic separation began in 1908 with a 20-ton Huff experimental mill built specially for the purpose by the American Zinc, Lead & Smelting Go., in Platterille, Wis., a plant which was a success from the start and was gradually increased in capacity as the market-conditions warranted to 100 tons of concentrates per day. ALTHOUGH it is obvious that in any flotation process we must have a froth, in recent years the development of collecting reagents has caused the possibilities of better frothing agents to be overlooked. Some investigators have even gone so far as to say that the number of satis-factory frothing agents was sufficient. A little consideration will show, however, that the reagents available in the past were far from ideal frothers. The properties of an ideal frother for flotation work may be set down as follows: 1. It. must form in low concentrations a copious but not too persist-ent froth. 2. It must be insensitive to hydrogen-ion concentration of the pulp; that is, it must froth equally well in an acid or alkaline medium. 3. It must be insensitive to salts, even in high concentration. 4. It must be absolutely noncollecting to both sulfides and nonsulfides. 5. Its frothing properties must not be affected by collecting reagents, including soap, the most generally used nonsulfide collector. 6. It must readily emulsify and disperse any insoluble collecting agent that is likely to be used. Clearly the existing frothers do not qualify. Pine oil, for example, is an acceptable frother for many purposes but if used in soap flotation a delicate balance between pine oil and soap must be struck because, as pointed out by Coghill1, these two reagents are incompatible in certain concentrations. The objections to soap itself as a frother are obvious, and the cresols and their substitution products all have some collecting Dower and very little emulsifying power.

In the past few years much con-sideration has been given to the evaluation of the effect of hydraulic fracturing on the productivity of wells. Generally, these studies included the evaluation of fracturing materials, fracture extension and formation damage due to the use of various fracturing fluids. Only little consideration has been given to the characteristics, and in particular the flow capacity, of the fracture itself and its effect on well productivity. This paper presents the results of laboratory investigations pointed toward fie evaluation of the efficiency of various fracrures with special emphasis on the flow capacity of these fractures. Data presented in this paper are the results of both an electrical model study and physical testing. Under consideration are (I) effect of overflush, (2) premature production of well after treatment, (3) "tailing-in" with coarse sand near the end of the treatment, (4) effect of propping agent size and concentration, (5) reduction in effective frac-ture permeability caused by formation caused by formation fines, silt and clays, and (6) effect of various fluids on formation strength and competency. The results of this investigation indicate that the flow capacity of a fracture is affected by any or all of the various parameters mentioned above. The authors believe that a better understanding arid utilization of these factors should result in more efficient formation fracturing. INTRODUCTION Hydraulic fracturing has become almost a standard practice of many companies for stimulating production from old and new wells. Although most companies utilize this service, techniques of application vary widely between companies and areas. Probably too often when a well in an area responds favorably to a particular technique all future wells in the same area are treated in a similar manner. Possibly a modification of the technique would result in a further production increase. Variables, of which many are extremely difficult to evaluate from field results, hamper the selection of procedure changes. Attempts are being made by a number of organizations to analyze statistically treating techniques from production data. This is a very worthy and necessary approach but very possibly laboratory investigations may aid in evaluating some of the variables which tend to affect the results of a fracturing treatment. Some of the factors cannot be studied from practical field experience and only laboratory tests can show the possibilities which might exist. One of the factors which appears to be of major concern today is the flow capacity of the created fracture and how it can be changed. Papers on this general subject have been primarily concerned with the size of propping agent and the extent of fracture. Papers have also been written on the possible permeability damage to formations by fracturing fluids. In addition, it might be possible that another type of flow restriction is prevalent. This would be a restriction of flow through a sand-packed frac- ture caused by foreign materials integrating within the propping agent. This paper presents preliminary data obtained in an attempt to evaluate the effect of some factors affecting flow through sand-packed fractures. No attempt is being made to offer a fracturing technique adaptable to all areas and conditions, but to furnish data tending to show the possible effects which might be caused by variations in procedures and materials. PROPPING AGENT PERMEABLLITIES A hydraulically induced fracture containing sand as a propping agent may theoretically be classified as a packed-sand system. The flow of fluids through such packed systems has been the subject of much research. Although there have been numerous methods proposed for the evaluation of such systems, most writers agree on the general properties affecting their flow capacity or permeability. These properties include porosity, particle size, sphericity and the roughness of the particle. In some methods of evaluation . the particle size and sphericity terms are combined to produce an equation which is a function of the surface area of the particles. In this study the permeability of various fracturing sands was both measured and calculated. The apparatus for the permeability measurements consisted of a 52-in. Lucite tube with a 2.5-in. ID. A screen and drain plug were fitted in the bottom of this tube to retain and hold the sand in place while allowing fluid flow. Two pressure taps consisting of thin, highly perforated

THE president of a large smelting and refining company once telegraphed me that they had acquired extensive mining interests in northern Peru and requested me to inspect their properties as it would be necessary to install a system of aerial tramways between their mines and treatment plant. The concentrator was about 50 mi. from the coast, reached by a fairly good motor road. From the concentrator an aerial tramway would he required, about 6 mi. long, to their first property, a gold and silver mine. The lower terminal of the tramway was at an elevation of 4000 ft. and the mine at an elevation of 9500 ft.

In any process wherein materials must be pelletized, a crucial period exists during the interval between the manufacture of the green pellets and their subsequent heat treatment. The pellets must possess sufficient strength and plasticity to withstand conveying and sizing. Also, they must be neither excessively brittle nor excessively plastic when placed in a bed on a traveling grate for heat treatment. An acceptable pellet, in the event sufficient forces are applied to cause its fracture, will merely split into two or three large fragments which would not drastically alter the permeability of the pellet bed. However, when brittle pellets are broken, they shatter so that the resultant fine particles either decrease the perimeability of the bed or become entrained in the gas stream and thereby cause dust problems. On the other hand, excessively plastic pellets may not break at all but may merely flatten. This would seriously hamper bed permeability. In the past, pellet evaluation has usually been left to the creative and artistic talents of the balling operators. A multitude of techniques have evolved, of which the most common is the simple compression test. For this test a hand-operated device loads single pellets to fracture, but reliability is strictly operator- dependent. Probably the next most common test is the drop test, which is conducted according to several different procedures. This is an important quantitative test for estimating the amount of handling a pellet will withstand. There are many other tests, such as pinching a pellet between the thumb and index finger, but none are capable of producing reproducible results.

L. F. Reinartz (Armco Steel Corp., Middletown, Ohio) —I would like to know, in the practical application of the Kalling process, what kind of a lining was used, how thick was the lining, and how much metal was treated at one time? S. Fornander (author's reply)—The rotary furnace is lined with a course of fireclay bricks 6 in. thick. This course is backed by 5 in. of insulation. The furnace has a capacity of about 15 tons. Mr. Reinartz—How was the ladle preheated? Mr. Fornander—As pointed out in the paper, the furnace was heated by a gas flame in the beginning of the experiments. During these first tests, however, the desulphurization was inconsistent. We think that this was due to the fact that iron droplets sticking to the furnace walls were oxidized by the gas flame. Now, the furnace is operated without preheating of any kind, and the results are much better. T. L. Joseph (University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minn.)—I might add one comment. This furnace was heated with a flame and for a time they had a little difficulty due to some residual metal in the rotating drum that would oxidize in between treatments and they found therefore, that it was very essential to drain the drum completely of metal so that they would not build up any ferrous oxide between treatments and they eliminated some of their erratic heats by maintaining those more reducing conditions. It was interesting to watch this operation. As soon as the drum started to rotate there was considerable flame, at least, at the time I saw it, that came out around the flanges, indicating there was quite a little pressure on the inside of the drum. W. 0. Philbrook (Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh)—Is the reaction slag in the Kalling process liquid or solid, and how is it separated from the metal? Mr. Fornander—In the process there is no slag in the usual sense of the word. The lime powder does not melt during the treatment. After the treatment the lime is still in the form of a fine powder. It is separated from the metal by means of a piece of wood of suitable size placed within the furnace before it is emptied. D. C. Hilty (Union Carbide & Carbon Research Laboratories, Niagara Falls, N. Y.)—Dr. Chipman has given us some of his ideas in connection with a specific effect of silicon and silica on sulphur elimination and how silicon might interfere with desulphuriz- ing in the blast furnace. I wonder if he would like to elaborate on the possibility of a similar effect of silicon in the Kalling process? J. Chipman (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass.)—Silicon does not interfere with the Kalling process. Anything that has strong reducing action is good for desulphurization. In these tests where the temperature was low compared to blast furnace temperatures, the silicon that is in the metal is a better reducing agent than the carbon. At high temperatures, carbon is the better. It is not the silicon in the metal that interferes with desulphurization, it is the silica in the slag. Mr. Joseph—I might add that the metal that was tapped from the drum after desulphurization was really at quite a low temperature. It was not measured, but I think it was well under 1300 °C, probably 1200" or a little above that. That was one of the difficulties, and I think there is no question about the fact that the Kalling process—in that it affects desulphurization between powdered lime, solid and liquid iron— is a reaction definitely between the solid lime and the liquid iron. E. Spire (Canadian Liquid Air, Montreal, Canada) — This Kalling process seems very interesting to us and after all it is only a mixing action that is taking place between the iron and the slag. We have attempted to do the same thing in another way. We have placed at the bottom of the ladle a porous plug through which we injected an inert gas. It can be nitrogen or argon. This plug is placed at the bottom of the conventional ladle and gas injected through the plug. That has appeared in our patent. To define this new type of treatment, I use the word gasometallurgy. I do not know if you like it, but it is a way of defining methods of treating metal using gases. What we do is exactly what is done in the exchange process in another way. We have a porous plug at the bottom with a high lime slag on top of the metal. Using this method, we have very good agitation of metal and slag, and with a small flow of gas, we can achieve a very strong agitation. For instance, in the 500 lb ladle, we use only 5 liters of gas a minute. We have an agitation compared to very rapidly boiling water in a pail. Moreover, the agitation can be controlled to create any amount of mixing desired. In a few minutes, with this method, the sulphur dropped from 0.58 to 0.11. These results have been improved since, and we have obtained results like 0.08

Pulsating contpresslon experiments have been carried out on coppev single crystals in order to test the adequacy of mechanisms which have been suggested for stage I cvack grouth when tension-compression loading is the mode of- applying stress. Although dejorrrzation continues slowly for many millions 01 cycles under Pulsating compression stresses both within slip bands formed in the first cycle and by the creation of new bands, the morphology of these bands is not typical of fatigue slip bands in general and neither initiation of cracks nor propagation of artificially induced cracks was observed. It is therefore concluded that 1) initiation and growth of cvacks in fatigue is a consequence of repeatedly reviersed, microplastic deformation rather than intermittent, unidirectional deforma-tion, 2) gvowth of- cracks in polycrystalline specimens FAILURE of a plain specimen subjected to cyclic tension-compression stresses is known to take place by two stages of cracking.1,2 The first stage is characterized by propagation along slip planes roughly at 45 deg to the stress axis, in the outermost layers of the specimen, and at a rate of the order of angstroms per cycle. The average macro orientation of a stage I crack is normally at right angles to the stress axis,3 however, except in a few cases, e.g., single crystals in suitable orientation, when both the micro and macro directions of propagation are at 45 deg to the axis. After a stage I crack has penetrated to such a depth that the stress on the remaining section of metal is significantly increased, stage II crack propagation succeeds stage I, at right angles to the stress axis both micro and macroscopically. Direct evidence of the processes occurring during a subjected to pulsating compression stresses is caused by the setting-up of local tensile stresses due to interactions between grains, and 3) both unslipping mechanisms and operation of the "plastic blunting process " within a single slip band are adequate descriptions 01- stage I growth, being fundamentally similar. The slip mode of a material, however, is considered to control whether unslipping or the plastic blunting process takes place. Thus materials of planar slip mode fauor unslipping while those hacing a wavy mode, and capable of cross slip, can fail in stage I by the plastic blunting process. Similarly, and perhaps more importantly, reversed torsion and tension-compression modes of applying stress may be expected to cause the unslipping mechanism and the plastic blunting process, respectively. single stress cycle4,5 shows that stage II crack propagation takes place by a repetitive plastic rounding and closing of the crack tip. This mechanism has come to be called the "plastic blunting process".6 On the other hand, the extreme smallness of the phenomena occurring in stage I growth prevents elucidation of its mechanism by direct observation. Many suggestions have been proposed for this mechanism,'"-" most of them involving some kind of random or systematic unslipping process. It is possible, however, that the mechanism of stage I growth is essentially the same as that of stage 11, but occurring on a much smaller scale.6 In this situation, it has been observed that cracks propagate along slip bands comprising dislocation cell structures and bounded on either side by regions of different dislocation density and distribution." Since there is evidence that such bands are softer than their matrix, * it may be expected that the plastic blunting process occurs within a single slip band during stage I growth, rather than on two gross bands as in stage 11, when the acting stress is greater.= The blunting of the crack tip allowed by coordinated

§ 22. THe results published in Professor Howe's paper10 of our determinations on the Ac3 and Ar3 points for a series of commercial carbon steels " containing manganese in varying proportion, represent the average temperatures found by taking several (4 or 5) heating and cooling curves. The accompanying curves, Figs. 6 and 7, are, for each steel, the first heating and cooling curves as obtained by the inverse-rate method of Osmond, using a cylindrical chronograph sensitive to 0.1 sec. for recording time. Simultaneous observations were also taken by the differential method with a platinum neutral and plotted by Rosenhain's derived differential method and gave substantially the same results, the curves having sensibly the same contours in both cases.12 The observations were taken in vacuo on cylinders 5 by 1 in. in length bored to center with a 1/8-in. hole to receive porcelain insulated thermo-couple, and inclosed in an out- and in-glazed Berlin porcelain tube heated electrically by platinum foil wound on the tube. The vacuum was usually better than 0.1 mm. The heating and cooling of the furnace was automatically controlled by a salt-water rheostat with shaped electrodes, giving a uniform rate of heating and cooling.

The leading antimony mineral is stibnite. In smelting stibnite ore two processes are available, precipitation and roasting-reduction. The former is suited only for high-grade ores. As low-grade ores are more common than high-grade, roasting-reduction is of greater importance than precipitation. In the roasting process the aim may be to leave the oxidized antimony in the ore, or it may be to volatilize as much of the antimony as possible, collect the volatilized oxide as a rich intermediary product and smelt it for antimony, leaving the gangue poor enough to be considered a waste product. Whichever way the roast is conducted certain difficulties inherent in stibnite are encountered. These are: 1. The low melting point of stibnite which, according to Pélabon,' is 550°C., according to Wagemann2 540°C., and according to Borgstroma 546°C. 2. The ignition temperature: According to Friedrich,4 stibnite, if heated in air, begins to oxidize at 290°C. if the size of a grain is 0.1 mm. in diameter; at 343", if 0.1 to 0.2 mm.; and 430" if 0.2 mm. 3. The fusibility of a mixture of Sb2S33 and Sb203 which in the form of kermesite (Sb2S3)z.Sbz03 melts at 517°C.6 4. The volatility of Sb2Ss and SbzOs, for which no numerical data appear to exist, although practical experience has shown that they are volatile at low temperatures. As regards the oxidation of metallic antimony, we have the experimental evidence of C. F. Plattner6 that when fused and brought to a red heat, it burns with a bluish-white flame to Sb2Oa which passes off as a

The time effect in reheating certain steels below the critical range is very marked. The increased toughness, shock-resisting power, and machinability of steel subjected to a long, high drawing temperature has been thoroughly demonstrated and is of practical importance, particularly in the manufacture of L'smokeless" rifle-barrel steel. The time effect in tempering is most important when a maximum drawing effect is desired, in which case the highest physical properties as well as ease of machining are important considerations. These are the conditions in drilling a rifle barrel. A hole, 0.30 in. in diameter and 24 in. long for the Springfield rifle, and 30 in. long for the Russian military rifle, has to be drilled in the heat-treated material. This barrel-drilling operation is probably the most difficult one in rifle manufacture, and anyone who has been connected with rifle manufacture knows how seriously production is affected when "hard" or non-uniform steel for barrels is encountered. The importance of high physical properties (tensile strength, toughness and resilience) in a rifle barrel is obvious. The physical properties of two different lots of barrel steel are given below. The first lot, No. 1, gave serious trouble in the drilling operation; the second gave no trouble at all. The pressure of ingoing water was then adjusted by a valve at 4, and was indicated by the column of water in a vertical glass tube connecting with the pressure chamber; an average pressure of 15 in. of water column was maintained during the demonstration. The sand used in the test was beach sand, which had simply been passed through a 20-mesh screen; about 45 per cent. was finer than 80 mesh. The circulation of water was at the rate of about 5 gal. per square foot per minute, and the rising velocity of the water in the box as a whole (not the velocity of the jets) was 6 in. per minute. At this consistency, the specific gravity of the fluid mass was between 1.55 and 1.60. Mr. Chance estimated that it would be possible to maintain a fluid mass of this consistency, 3 ft. deep, and with an area of 50 by 60 ft. with an expenditure of 15-hp. Mr. Chance then showed how a lump of coal would float on the fluid mass, and also made a separation of slate from coal on a small scale in a wire cage submerged momentarily in the fluid. The following demonstration relates to a matter not contained in the original paper, and was presented as of interest to the operators of cyanide and other lixiviation processes dealing with fluid mixtures of varying specific gravity.-Ed.]

The little stamp-mill in the mining laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the work done by it have been well described by Prof. R. H. Richards and E. E. Bugbee in a paper read at the Albany meeting of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, February, 1903.' As run for student class-work the mill contains a feeder, stamps, plate, and vanner. Results in the past indicate that the work of these machines is just as efficient as that of a regular mill handling the same class of ore. It has been the custom to obtain ore principally from Nova Scotia, mainly because it is the nearest source of supply, and also because there is a considerable saving in freight-cost as compared with other districts. The gold in Nova Scotia ores is notoriously coarse, and for this reason it is almost impossible to obtain satisfactory results by sampling and fire-assay, unless an extremely large lot of ore is crushed and all of the contained gold pellets are saved. A very interesting and most extraordinary example of this fact has been presented by a recent run in the Technology stamp-mill. Since the capacity of the mill is about 60 kg. per hr., and since in about 5-hr. run the students in any one section have an opportunity to make the necessary study of machines, it usually happens that several runs are made from one lot of ore. When the shipment is received it is first dried and weighed, put through the Blake breaker, set at 1 or 1.5 in., and the crushed product is piled in a cone on the sampling-floor. The theory of the present law with reference to lode locations contemplates the existence upon the surface of mineral-bearing veins which have clearly marked boundaries, and which can be so readily traced that a locator may immediately mark the boundaries of his 600 by 1,500 ft. claim in such a way that the vein will 'pass through both of its end-lines. It also supposes that, having discovered such a mineral-bearing vein, the locator will at once post a notice upon such discovery, mark the boundaries of his location in such a manner that they can be readily traced, and from that time forward have absolute title to the ground embraced within such boundaries, as against every person except the United States. For initiating title to placer ground, the law presupposes the discovery of a valuable mineral deposit; but not necessarily in place, as in the case of lode claims; and the location must be made to conform "as nearly as may be" to the legal subdivisions of the United States public land survey. When the placer law was extended to include the acquisition of title to oil lands, no exception was made as to the necessity for the discovery of valuable mineral in advance of location! Practice under the Present Law Nature did not make all veins clearly defined and readily traceable upon the surface; nor did she, in all cases, leave upon the surface which overlies important ore bodies such outcrops as would in them-selyes be considered valuable; and the citizen of the United States has in the past endeavored to steer his course between the mandates of the law and the limitations of nature. THE Rio de Canada Honda placer property is situated at an altitude of 5500 ft. above sea level in the San Luis Mountains of the Province of San Luis, Argentina. The mine is reached by 70 km. of fair truck road, from the nearest railway station on the Ferrocarril Buenos Aires al Pacifico. The Pan-American airport at Villa Mercedes, 1.40 km. distant, serves as the most convenient point for shipment of gold. Placer mining in the Rio de Canada Honda dates from the time of the Incas and the present native population depends on the gold washed from this river and the adjacent arroyos as a means of livelihood as did the many generations before them. They dig pits to bedrock where they are not driven out by water, and mine the bedrock gravel by means of tunnels and caves. No timber is available and the ground is supported by rock cribs carefully built with the boulders encountered; or with angular blocks of slate rock taken from quarries on the surface.

SEVERAL constructive and fundamental studies have been made in the analysis of data obtained from experiments carried on with batch ball and rod mills. The operating characteristics of ball milling in small continuous circuits have also been appraised. It is from these analyses that some of the theories of comminution have been developed. Relatively few studies of continuous rod milling have added significantly to the fundamental concepts, because seldom have they yielded sufficiently consistent results. Perhaps they have been too limited in their scope. Careful control of the variables in batch grinding is simple compared with that encountered in a continuous operation. This factor alone has discouraged many investigators. Occasionally results of systematic changes made in industrial rod mill circuits have been published, but usually the data are sketchy and are restricted because of the unwieldiness of the equipment used. The work, in general, has not been comprehensive; nevertheless it has provided empirical relationships that have bridged the gap between postulate and practice so that by proper manipulation of formulae, a mill designer can anticipate mill size and power requirements.14 Although operating variables of a small continuous mill are not so easy to control as with the batch mill, with present day devices, and with careful experimental work, consistent results can be obtained. Nearly four years ago, in the Process Laboratory, Allis-Chalmers Mfg. Co. began a systematic study of the effects of several variables upon the performance of the pilot rod mill. A mill was built in the laboratory to provide the versatility required for the proposed study. It was constructed in sections so that it could be operated, with a few modifications, as a rod mill 30 in. x 8 ft or 30 in. x 4 ft. The discharge end of the shell was flanged so that either an end peripheral discharge or an overflow discharge could be installed. Thus the performance of at least four types of mills could be studied merely by changing the type of discharge or the length of the mill shell. The grinding experiments were designed so that a study could be made of the way in which the mill speed, feed rate, and pulp density influenced the performance of both overflow and end peripheral discharge rod mills. Four sets of experimental data were collected from the four mill arrangements. The mill in each set of experiments was fed at four rates of feed depending on the length of the mill, at four pulp densities, and at five percentages of critical speed. Electrical and mechanical controls were in- stalled to regulate all these independent variables, and auxiliary devices were used to verify the precision of the controls at each point. The dependent variables used to quantify the experiments were the reduction ratio and the hew surface area produced as calculated from sieve analyses. These were incorporated with the energy factor by the calculation of both the new surface produced per unit of energy and the Bond work index.' Rod wear, as a dependent variable, was not studied because of the short period of operation for each run. Exclusive of repeat runs, each set of experiments yielded 80 products, and the total study at least 320 products, all of which were quantified. With the operating information collected, these data presented a bewildering accumulation. Statistical analysis has been invaluable in unraveling the confusion and in presenting a means of establishing the nature and the magnitude of the significant variables. Data presented in this paper are those from the 30 in. x 4 ft end peripheral discharge rod mill, Fig. 1, when limestone was ground at feed rates of 1000, 2000, 4000, and 5000 lb per hr, at pulp densities of 50, 60, 70, and 80 pct solids, and at mill speeds of 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90 pct of the critical speed. These 80 tests have all been run at least twice, and occasionally a third time, to prove that the data obtained were reproducible. The techniques of operation and the methods of quantification of results are described in the following pages and the results analyzed statistically to show the significant variables. The variables are plotted to show the relationships that exist. A massive dolomitic limestone from Waukesha Lime and Stone Co. was used for feed during these experiments because of its availability and its tex-tural uniformity. This limestone analyzed 28.7 pct CaO, 21.0 pct MgO, 6.0 pct SiO2, 0.4 pct A1²O³, and 0.3 pct Fe²O³ and had a loss on ignition of 44.1 pct.
