FoR reasons unnecessary to enter into here, I was called upon to contradict the statement that " closed metallic vessels, partly filled with water and heated, do not become shattered by violent explosion, but simply rupture by over-pressure;" and the following experimental results were obtained in support of my position : A piece of drawn brass tubing (telescope-tubing) 1 1/2 inches in diameter and 15 inches long was closed at both ends by screwing on heavy caps of bronze. Before closing the second end the vessel was half filled with river water, the cap was then screwed on, and the closed vessel was supported upon two iron anvils, and heated in the interval between the supports by a large Bunsen lamp. The resulting explosion (which was doe to over-pressure only and not to any more occult cause) was exceedingly violent. No small damage was done to the room in which the experiment was undertaken; and the noise was like that of a cannon. Those of the pieces which could be recovered are shown in Fig. 1. Upon examining the wreck, it was noticed that one of the heavy bronze end-caps had preserved its circular section and still contained that portion of the barrel of the tube which had been screwed into it, while the other end-cap contained no portion of the tube, and was moreover sprung into a shape more or less elliptical, as if from excessive lateral strain. It was also observed that the large pieces of the shattered boiler predominated towards the end which had been closed by the un-sprung end-cap. The reasonable explanation, in view of the facts, was, that over-pressure had caused the boiler to yield through the screw-threads at A B, Fig. 2, and the righthand end-cap had blown off, thus leaving the boiler half filled with water, greatly super-heated for the new (atmospheric) pressure to which it was suddenly reduced; that this water had consequently sprung instantly into steam with dynamite effect, shattering the tube and springing the remaining end-cap. The large pieces would be expected at the open end of the boiler, as at that point the "tamping "would have been that of the atmosphere only. Statistical data on the Polish producing business are available only for the first half of 1939. Because of the invasion of the country during September by Germany and Russia all sources of information have stopped, and it is impossible to get even an approximate picture of the status of the industry after that date. The long declining trend of Polish production, which was finally checked during 1938, kept a further upward tendency during the first half of 1939, and there is good reason to believe that the upward trend would have been maintained. It is true, there was little hope of reviving the slowly dying Boryslaw field, although there still remained a slight possibility for an extension in its southwestern direction. Repressuring plans were still discussed, but. could not be put into effect because of extremely complicated and split-up lease ownership. The Gorlice-Lipinki ficld continued to be the main factor in the increase of the country's production. During the first half of 1939 this field received a further important extension in a southern direction. The Schodnica field continued to use repressuring with success. At the end of June, 21 exploratory wells were drilling, 14 of which were within thc Carpathians and 7 in the Miocene geosyncline of the Carpathian Foreland. All of the wildcat wells drilled within the Carpathians were on the struct,ural cxtcnsion of old established fields, but part of the wildcats of the Foreland were on new geological and geophysical prospects. The Opary gas field of the Foreland discovered last year has been further developed. The Government-owned Polmin completed its third gasser. This well penetrated two sands; the upper one, 118 ft. thick, was found at 1312 ft., with an initial pressure of 570 lb. and capable of produeiring 10 million cu. ft. per day. The second sand, 91 ft. thick, was found at 1690 ft., yielding 20 million cu. ft., with a pressure of 760 lb. The well Mieczyslaw, drilled about 3 miles further north on the flank of the structurc, found the first sand watered. The Pioneer No. 5, at Chodonice near Przemysl, which reported somc gas last year, was 5696 ft. deep at the end of June, still drilling in Miocene. Anothe well in the same vicinity drilled by the Gasolina was 1708ft. deep.

Discussion of the paper of L. C. MORGANROTH, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 110, February, 1916, pp. 475 to 481. DAVID B. REGER, Morgantown, W. Va.-I notice in the third paragraph of the first page of the paper, that in mentioning the clays of the Pottsville series, the author says: "The bed of clay found in the latter formation is unique in that flint clay is practically restricted to it. (A variety of flint clay is occasionally found in these upper deposits but this is in such small amounts as to be negligible."). If the author wishes to confine himself to the fire clays of Pennsylvania, as the title seems to indicate, I have nothing to say, but if he wishes to include a discussion on fire clays of the adjoining States which the. subsequent paragraphs of his paper seem to indicate, then I wish to call attention to the fact that there are large and extensive deposits of fire clay in the Allegheny series, immediately overlying the Pottsville in the northern counties of West Virginia. These fire clays have been studied carefully, and described in several reports of the West Virginia Geological Survey, first in the report on Ohio, Brooke, and Hancock Counties, in the northern part of the State; described later ,in the report on Monongalia, Marion, and Taylor Counties, and in the report on Preston County, which followed. In these latter counties (Monongalia, Marion, Taylor, and Preston) there are some beds of fine fire clay, varying in thickness from 6 to 10 or 12 ft., with a content of only 2 or 3 per cent. of fluxing ingredients, and these are of the typical Savage Mountain appearance and also have the typical Savage Mountain fracture. They have been prospected, but not mined a great deal. Several of them have been tested in blast furnaces and furnaces for other purposes, in glass-manufacturing plants, also for firebrick, arid have been found to be very good. They are simply awaiting development, and I merely want to call attention to the fact that there are plenty of them in the Allegheny series still above the Pottsville in West Virginia. There are two or three valuable seams which I have seen in person and have had analyzed in our laboratory.

THE investigation discussed in this paper concerns phase equilibria in the alumina-silica-water system. Studies in this system are part of a re¬search project sponsored by the Geophysics Branch of the Office of Naval Research2 directed toward increasing knowledge of the stability relations of metamorphic mineral assemblages. Inasmuch as metamorphic rocks consist largely of aluminosilicate struc¬tures, many of them hydrated, the system alumina-silica-water is a logical starting point for the systematic laboratory study of metamorphic mineral systems. Although logical, this is not, however, an easy approach to the problem because of the very great difficulty of obtaining transformations among structures in response to changes in temperature, pressure, and con¬centration. Commonly equilibrium among the phases in this system is exceed¬ingly difficult to attain. New laboratory techniques are required to produce certain structural rearrangements, such as inversion of diaspore to boehmite or the transformation of alumina-silica mixtures to andalusite or kyanite. Phase equilibrium data for the alumina-silica-water system are consequently only partly complete, and only a summary progress report is presented here. Crystalline phases in the alumina-silica-water system are numerous and many are common minerals. The oxide components exist as: quartz, tridymite, cristobalite, corundum, water, and ice. Binary compounds occurring naturally are: sillimanite, andalusite, kyanite, and mullite in the alumina-silica system and gibbsite, boehmite, and diaspore in the alumina-water system. The most abundant among the ternary compounds is the composition A12O3.2SiO2.¬2H2O, existing in the four structural modifications, kaolinite, nacrite, dickite, and halloysite. The hydrated form of halloysite, A12O3.2SiO2.4H2O, is here called endellite. Pyrophyllite, A12O3.4SiO2.H2O, is the third ternary compound of natural occurrence. In addition to these minerals, two other ternary crystalline phases have been encountered in this study. The first is a structure resembling montmorillonite and corresponding perhaps to the pure aluminian end member of the beidellite series. The other has a composition approximating A12O3.2SiO2.H2O but its composition and structure are still in doubt. ISOTHERMAL formation of martensite in a copper-aluminum-nickel alloy was previously reported by Hull and Garwood.' In the present work an attempt has been made to investigate some of the character- istics of the formation of isothermal martensite in binary copper-aluminum alloys containing 14.00 and 14.50 pct Al, respectively. Chill-cast alloys were prepared from OFHC copper and aluminum of greater than 99.5 pct purity. They were homogenized for 24 hr at 950° C. Polished samples were soaked at 1000°C and quenched in water to retain the p phase untransformed; martensite did not form during the quench. The surface was then repolished for isothermal microscopic studies at room temperature. The salient features of the martensitic transformation in copper-aluminum alloys observed in this investigation are: a) The transformation progresses (i) by nuclea-tion at new sites and (ii) by simultaneous slow isothermal growth of existing martensite plates. Slow isothermal growth of martensite has previously been observed by Holden2 in an uranium-chromium alloy and by Hull and Garwood in copper-aluminum-nickel alloy. b) Martensite plates nucleate preferentially at the pin holes formed during the casting of the specimen, Fig. 1. c) Some of the martensite plates pass right through other plates lying in their path, Fig. 1. d) Martensite plates cross grain boundaries without any change in the direction of growth. e) An irregular network of markings, Fig. 2, appears simultaneously with the formation of martensite. It was less prominent in the case of 14.5 pct alloy. The markings may arise due to spontaneous deformation under the lattice strains of the martensitic transformation. Crossing of martensite plates was first observed by Kulin and cohen3 when a high-nickel steel was cooled to 77°K. They suggested that the rapidly advancing plates atquire considerable kinetic energy and strike the obstructing plate with a momentum so as to nucleate the process on the other side of the plate. This, however, fails to explain the present observation where the slow isothermally growing martensite plates cross each other. Such plates would not possess large momentum to bodily displace the obstructing plate. Fig. 1 shows the martensite plates crossing each other without body displacements. This should be contrasted with Fig. 3 of Kulin and Cohen's paper where crossing of plates is accompanied by shearing or body displacements of the plates. The present observations can, how-

About a year ago, the writer had occasion to assist Mr. John L. Gill, Jr., of the Pittsburgh Car-wheel Works, in malting a trial of his new testing machine. A piece of Bessemer steel, of about .34 carbon, was used as a test-piece, turned to a sectional area of one square inch for a length of five inches between shoulders, and provided with large round heads, which were fitted to what is called the " Wade grip." Measurements of elongation, accurate to 1/10000 of an inch, were made by a special apparatus containing two micrometer screws, with electric contact attachment. The machine was operated by hand-power. Readings of elongation were taken at each increment of 2000 pounds stress per square inch, up to 44,000 pounds, the elongation corresponding to the latter figure being .0085 inch. The elongations up to this point remained almost exactly proportional to the stresses, the strain diagram, as shown on the Plate, from the origin to the point A, being a straight line (the deviation of no observation from the straight line being greater than .0002 inch). There being no indication of an approach to the elastic limit, the attendant at the hand-wheel and scale-beam wits told to proceed as usual and move the poise forward 2000 pounds, or to 46,000, and turn the wheel until the beam was balanced. Noticing that the beam did not rise in the usual time, and that the elongation was increasing rapidly, the writer called to the attendant to stop turning the hantl-wheel and to push the poise backwards until the scale-beam balanced. Instead of balancing at between 44,000 and 46,000 pounds, as was expected, it balanced at 40,000 pounds, and the elongation had increased to .0343 inch (or more than four times that recorded at 34,000 pounds), as plotted at the point B, the dotted line between A and B showing the supposed course of' the strain diagram between these two points. Immediately upon recording the elongation the writer said to Mr. Gill, who was standing alongside: "This phenomena is without a parallel in my experience, and I know of but one way to account for it. For many years mineral dressers have been at a loss to explain the variation in magnetic susceptibility of the same mineral species obtained from different localities. In fact, they do not even have a list of accurately measured data on the specific magnetic susceptibility of weakly magnetic minerals to consult. Experience as a university teacher has firmly convinced me that the average student has more difficulty in acquiring a satisfactory knowledge of magnetism than of any other branch of mineral dressing. This is almost entirely because the subject has been treated far too much from a strict practical standpoint and far too little from a fundamental one. It is no exaggeration to state that almost all the published theoretical discussions are based on the experimental results of manufactured chemicals and alloys, but not of naturally occurring minerals. In an attempt to remedy this state of affairs, the author of this article not only set up a new magnetic balance in the Department of Mineral Preparation of The Pennsylvania State University, but also performed work of fundamental value, thus pointing the way to further research. This is evidenced by the fact that an investigation of the magnetic susceptibilities of manganese minerals was recently completed by S. G. Watt under the direction of David R. Mitchell, now acting dean of the College of Mineral Industries of the Pennsylvania State University. D. J. Cook is studying the magnetic susceptibility of titanium minerals under my supervision. It is hoped that our research program can be continued for several years and that similar investigations will be initiated at other universities and research institutions. Ernest M. Spokes (author's reply): The discusser has touched the heart of a pedagogical problem in the field of minerals beneficiation—students do not understand magnetism and, as a result, neither do the graduate engineers. Only recently has the average course in engineering physics started teaching the fundamentals of magnetism, as they are understood in modern physics, in addition to the classical treatment of the mathematical aspects of magnetic phenomena. It is to be hoped that this increasing instruction in fundamentals will improve our understanding and inspire research to determine more of the basic magnetic data that are essential if we are to see improved methods of separation by magnetism.

IN a paper on the manufacture of artificial fuel, read at the Philadelphia meeting of February, 1878, I enumerated the difficulties which I had to overcome before succeeding in the mixing of coal-dust and clay, the compressing of the same mixture, and the water-proofing of the lumps. The drying of the lumps, after leaving the press, was the remaining difficulty, and it was expected that a plan devised by Dr. Charles M. Cresson, of Philadelphia, would enable us to dry the fuel as rapidly as it was moulded, and that a continuous production could in that way be obtained. The company was reorganized. The works were purchased by the new company at an assignee's sale, and the oven was modified, according to Dr. Cresson's plan. Anticipating a possible failure, I had prepared a plan by which I expected to be able to demonstrate that anthracite coal dust mixed with pitch, could be manufactured with our present machinery slightly modified ; so that after all, if we were compelled to give up the attempt to make fuel for domestic use, there was a possibility of succeeding in the manufacture of a good steam-fuel. The plan suggested by Dr. Cresson for drying the pressed lumps of coal-dust cemented with clay, did not work as well as we expected. It enabled us to dry more fuel than we did before, but it could not be made to dry more than one-half of the lumps produced by the press. The plan was abandoned, and I was authorized to experiment with coal-dust and coal-tar pitch. The cement which is used in Europe to conglomerate coal-dust is ,usually dry pitch, which is prepared by separating from the tar, at a temperature of 572° Fahrenheit, the volatile matters which it contains. Some manufacturers, however, employ crude tar, others, a rich tar, which has been cleared of 25 per cent. of its volatile substances, by heating it to 392° Fahrenheit. But with common tar very weak fuels are obtained, which do not burn well, and give out a strong smell and a great deal of smoke ; it is also necessary to subject them to a baking process, in order to solidify them, and to eliminate the more volatile of the materials contained. This operation of course requires a special plant, the cost of which increases sensibly the price of manufacture, without counting the products

The production of petroleum in Venezuela during 1931 was approximately 118,767,000 bbl., a decrease of 18,904,000 bbl., or 13.7 per cent, compared with the previous year. This is the first break in production, which has risen steadily since 1920, and is attributable to restriction of output and drilling operations, in harmony with lessened demand, rather than to any real decline in potential production. Venezuela ranked third among the world's producers, having lost second place to Russia. The Bolivar coastal fields, which were extended approximately 14 miles southward during the year, continued to supply most of the oil. La Concepcion, Los Manueles and Quiriquire all showed marked increases. A new field of light oil was discovered on the north coast near Puerto Cumarebo, State of Falcon. Exports declined 15.7 per cent, from 137,377,000 bbl. in 1930 to about 115,800,000 bbl. in 1931. Crude oil in storage at the end of the year amounted to 7,450,000 bbl., a decrease of 2,150,000 as compared with 1930. Tankage utilized is about 40 per cent of the available space. A drastic decline in drilling activity reduced the number of wells completed in producing areas from 401 in 1930 to 116 in 1931. Only three wells were drilled in the Lagunillas field proper, but, the amount of closed-in production and proven acreage gave assurance of a satisfactory potential output. Of the 1580 wells drilled to the close of 1931 in the producing areas of the Bolivar Coast, 631 were active and 853 were closed in; 96 had been abandoned. The status of the active wells at the end of 1931 was as follows: flowing, 331; pumping, 99; gas-air lift, 201. Producing wells closed in numbered 452; workovers, 8; totally inactive, 393. Lago Petroleum Corp. and Venezuela Gulf Oil Co. placed in operation the first units of their electric power plants, the former at Punta Gorda and the latter at Las Morochas, and are replacing steam power in their operations as rapidly as possible. Compressor stations were also installed for use in connection with air-gas lift operations. A considerable volume of gas was treated in gasoline extraction plants, the tail gas being recom-pressed and utilized together with natural high-pressure gas, for stimulation of production.

The oil business has been relatively quiet in Wyoming during 1934. Only 34 producing wells were completed, 54 dry holes were drilled, and at the end of the year only 30 wells are listed as drilling. Wyoming still has a large reserve of production shut in, mostly in black oil or asphaltic base fields in the northwestern part of the state. The total oil production increased from 11,171,500 bbl. in 1933 to 12,539,470 in 1934, but light oil production continued to decline, and the increase was made by black oil fields. This is partly due to natural decline of light oil fields, especially Salt Creek, Big Muddy and Lost Soldier, but largely because of increased demands for road oil. The Rocky Mountain states spent much money to build and improve roads and a greater amount of road oil was used. The refining of black oil to manufacture road oil produced gasoline as a byproduct that slightly decreased the demand for light oil. The Oregon Basin and Frannie fields, in the Big Horn Basin, moved into second and third places in the list of producing fields in Wyoming because of their increased black oil production, and Big Muddy and Lost Soldier, light oil fields, dropped back. Wyoming stayed close to its allowed production, which was based on the needs of the refiners and purchasers. This activity in black oil resulted in a few more wells in the fields of the Big Horn Basin, but the greatest amount of drilling was in the shallow Osage field in eastern Wyoming. Osage supplies many little topping plants and at the close of 1934 there was not enough oil available there to supply all of them. In the Lost Soldier field and Salt Creek, one major company was rather active in a campaign to deepen, clean out and repair old wells to increase production, and the figures of that work are not included here. Of the light oil fields, Lance Creek promises to be most active during 1935, since the two wells in the recently discovered Sundance sand pool are producing and more wells will he drilled. With wildcatting almost at a standstill, two new oil fields were discovered in Wyoming in 1934. In many fields edge water is one of the most important factors governing the production of oil. Possibly this fact is not appreciated by many producers except in so far as it may bring about a loss in production from wells drilled on the flanks of structures. In the light of artificial flooding as practiced in New York and Pennsylvania, and of the beneficial effect of natural water-flooding on many wells and leases in the Mid-Continent and elsewhere, it seems reasonable to suppose that very few phases of the petroleum industry hold greater promise for future benefit than the study and control of the natural water drive. Rate of Water Encroachment The rate of movement of water in artificially flooded areas has been referred to as so many feet per unit of time, usually from an injection well toward surrounding producing wells. This definition is vague when used in reference to the movement of natural edge water, inasmuch as such factors as sand thickness, steepness of dip and horizontal extent arc not considered. In the ultimate analysis, only the vertical component of movement affects the production of oil in the natural drive, and in order to define the rate of water encroachment more exactly, such a term as acre-fect per unit time might be used. Thus, where one well is located to each 10 acres a vertical movement of 5 ft. in the water level in a year would be defined as an encroachment of 50 acre-feet per year, and where one well is located to each 20 acres, as 100 acre-feet per year. Such a definition as this is entirely arbitrary, but it takes into consideration to a certain extent the influence of well spacing, and consequent sand drainage, on the rate of water movement. The rate of movement is considered to be an important function of water encroachment, for it is believed that the efficiency of recovery by natural water flood depends a good deal upon the rate of movement. In general, rapid encroachment is thought to effect a poor recovery because of the differential in favor of the movement of water through a sand body and the consequent tendency to trap oil in the sand. IN its dual role of pig-lion smelter and gas producer, the blast furnace is a remarkably satisfactory and efficient apparatus Many metallurgists and engineers have pointed out, however, that since the primary function of the blast furnace is to produce pig iron at the lowest possible cost, its function as a gas producer should be subordinated to this primary purpose During the past 10 years or more, improvements in blast-furnace technique and economy have, n fact, been directed primarily to increasing efficiency n the use of the reducing power of the gases produced by combustion of coke at the tuyeres, to reduce iron ore within the furnace The net over-all result is a decrease n the fuel value of the top gas per unit of volume, and per ton of pig iron, which is evidently amore than offset n value by the corollary saving in coke and the possibility of increased furnace capacity, for otherwise there would be no point in making such improvements The purpose of the present paper is to suggest that, while progress has been made n this direction, there is another approach to the problem of increasing the chemical and thermal efficiency of the blast furnace in its primary role as a pig-iron smelter, which appears to offer possibilities of improvement in over-all economy of a different order of magnitude than results thus far obtained by the use of other expedients The present argument is based in large part upon the hypothesis that the efficiency and economics of pig-iron smelting are seriously and adversely affected by the phenomenon known as "solution loss," and that the problem of solution loss can be successfully attacked by increasing the over-all pressure, i e , the "top pressure" under which the furnace is operated It is indicated that pressure operation may also be expected to result n concomitant benefits, which may be summed up as generally improved operating conditions, together with a substantial saving in fuel and/or a substantial increase in furnace capacity In a broad sense, the suggestion of pressure operation of the pig-iron blast furnace is not new, for operation under moderately increased over-all pressure was suggested as early as 1871, by no less an authority than

Antoine M. Gaudin was a vigorously creative man and throughout his career an internationally respected leader of his chosen profession of mineral engineering. To his professional colleagues and clients and to his former students he was both "Professor Gaudin," their wise, inspiring, and enthusiastic teacher, and "Tony," their, warm and beloved personal friend. Thus, his teachings and his unique inquisitive-creative approach to problems live on and grow in the accomplishments of his students. Antoine Gaudin was born at the turn of the century in Smyrna, Turkey, where his father was general manager of a French-owned railroad. It was there that he spent his earliest years, literally in the shadow of classic marbles from diggings at the site of Aphrodesias, which his father had rediscovered. From this, Tony developed an appreciation of the arts. He eventually surrounded himself with art treasures; he reveled in the beauties of nature, and he cherished his choice collection of rhododendron and azaleas. His artistic traits led him to take up painting when his daughter, Elinor, sought his help in blending her tints for a water color. In typical fashion he was not satisfied until he had become adept with pastels in capturing the muted tones of distant landscapes and the technical properties of light and color. Unfortunately not many paintings were produced. His paternal grandfather was Marc-Antoine Gaudin, for many years secretary of the Academie des Sciences in Paris, and a well known chemist and mineralogist whose primary interests included the synthesis of precious stones. In an autobiographical sketch written in 1939, Dr. Gaudin recalled: "As a child I saw many of the original synthetic sapphires and rubies which my father had inherited. This, coupled with my father's avocation of mining ventures and archaeology, early decided that I would become connected with the mineral industry." One can speculate that the archeological activities of his father, the mineral systhesis experiments of his grandfather, and his own early studies of mineralogy and geology formed a base from which his special talents as an experimentalist were to develop. Laboratory research under Professor Gaudin's personal guidance was often an intensive, fast-moving, and exciting experience--especially to a new graduate student. FOLLOWING the techniques used by Beck and co-worker~ "~ the characteristics of selective growth in the recrystallization of a zone-refined aluminum single crystal, rolled 80 pct at -78°C in the (110)[112] orientation, have been studied. The material was 99.999+ pct pure. The as-grown crystal had a resistance ratio, R(298°K) /R(4,2°K), of approximately 5000. The method of preparation of the single crystals and the necessary precautions in handling them during rolling in order to avoid recrystallization in locally distorted regions were described in an earlier paper.3 The rolling texture of this zone-refined aluminum crystal is practically identical with that of less pure aluminum crystals rolle! in the same orientation, i.e., a very sharp (110)[112]. Random nuclei were provided by artificial nuclea-tion by abrading one face of the rolled crystal on 600-grit emery paper in a random fashion. The thin layer of disturbed metal recrystallized at room temperature into fine grains almost immediately. An X-ray diffraction pattern was taken from the abraded surface of the crystal, and the relative intensities of the various reflection peaks were compared with those obtained from a powder specimen. As shown in Fig. 1, the relative intensities of the various peaks from the recrystallized layer varied somewhat from experiment to experiment, depending presumably on the abrading technique. However, the texture of the recrystallized layer produced by this method is nearly as random as that of a powder specimen. Fig. 2 shows the texture determined from the "growth side" (face opposite the abraded surface) of the crystal after it was kept at room temperature for 100 hr. The specimen was only partially recrystallized, as shown by the remaining deformation texture. The new orientations are derived from the recrystallized grains grown through the thickness of the crystal from the "nucleation side" (the abraded surface). Fig. 3 shows the texture after complete recrystallization produced by annealing at 60°C for 1 hr. The arrows indicate 40-deg rotation around the (111) axes of the deformation texture. The microstructure of a completely recrystallized specimen is shown in Fig. 4. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the texture of the re-crystallized grains grown from the nucleation side to the growth side is essentially the same as that observed in less pure aluminum' (99.994 pct) and dilute alloyz crystals rolled in the same orientation. When ore was discovered on the Tintic Standard property in the spring of 1916, new developments were immediately started both north and south of that property, on the supposition that in East Tintic the ore would be found to occur in northerly trending channels, similar to those so characteristic of the older camp. But 9 years of developments have failed to establish the existence of such a channel. This is due undoubtedly to important differences in the geology of the two camps, that were not recognized, and is indicative of the danger in the general tendency toward interpreting the geology of East Tintic too strictly in terms of that of the older camp. It should not be forgotten that while the two sections have had practically the same geological history, the net results of a long series of geologic processes have developed in them conditions that differ so widely and in so many particulars that the necessity of regarding them as essentially different districts seems apparent. In an effort to emphasize this fact, this paper is devoted chiefly to a comparison of the geological conditions as found in the two camps and is addressed more particularly to those familiar with the geology of the Tintic district. Following a short description of the several ore discoveries and of the Tintic Standard mine is a brief discussion of the evidence of ore channels in East Tintic. East Tintic District The Term East Tintic district is here used to represent that eastern part of the Tintic mining district lying between the productive portion of the old camp of Tintic on the west, the foot hills of Goshen Slope, on the east, the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad on the north, and Silver Pass on the south, all in Utah County. FIRES in mines are so serious in their consequences and of such frequent occurrence, that their causes and the means of extinguishing them are certainly questions of the greatest interest to a large part of the engineering profession. We have already, in this country, many mines which have been burning for years, and though our hard anthracite is so difficult to ignite that for a quarter of a century after it was first discovered it was not known how to burn it except with the aid of an artificial blast, yet most of the fires which have occurred underground have been in anthracite mines, and in the coal itself. The injury which these fires have caused to properties in various parts of the anthracite regions, and the cost of extinguishing them, would amount to many millions of dollars, and they have also occasioned the loss of many valuable lives. It is not surprising, therefore, that the subject has already attracted much attention, and the exercise of great ingenuity ; and the present communication is made less with the expectation of announcing anything new, than with the object of putting upon record the present state of our knowledge on this subject, or, in other words, of indicating how defective are the present means of combating underground conflagrations. (Causes of Mine Fires.-Even upon the surface, fire is a terrible foe to contend with, and there is probably no other which inspires such thorough and well-founded alarm. With what feelings, then, must we look upon this destructive element, when its field is in the narrow galleries of a mine, where the poisonous products of combustion, spreading in every direction, protect, in the most effectual manner, the fire itself from the attacks of extinguishers, while, if the face of attack be ventilated so as to enable them to approach the seat of the fire, the air current simply increases the extent and violence of the conflagration. Fires underground originate in as various ways as those on the surface, and it is scarcely necessary to say that, except in the rare cases where they are the result of design, they are invariably classed as " accidents," and most generally as " unavoidable accidents." Discussion of the paper of ROSWELL H. JOHNSON, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 98, February, 1915, pp. 221 to 226. A. C. LANE, Tufts College, Mass.-About a year ago Mr. Washburne read a paper on the same characteristic oil-sand waters, discussing their chemical character, and the possibility of their chemical character being modified by adsorption in passing through the shale. We are used to consider circulation as being in one stratum, and I have often gone so far as to think that 2,000 or 3,000 ft. clown I could recognize the chemical character as in part connate to a given water. For instance, the St. Peter sandstone, far underneath oil sands, seems to retain' a relatively fresh and peculiar character. I am, therefore, tempted to ask the writer if in his experiments lie has made any test to see whether the chemical character of these waters is also changed, where there is any adsorption, so that the water passing through these fine-grained beds should leave behind its salt as well as its oil. In many cases salt-waters are associated with oil and-gas. A second question has occurred to me. In these days when we hear a good deal about oil flotation, may it not be well to repeat these experi-ments with pyritic concentrates, and see if they observe precisely the same with regard to the selective accumulation of oil and gas. ROSWELL H. JOHNSON.-I thank Profesor Lane for bringing this question forward. I recognize its importance, but. am not able to say I have any data upon that point. It is also very interesting in connection with Dr. Day's hypothesis of fractional filtration, and we may very easily get something happening to the water corresponding in some degree to what we get with oil. Va.-Mr. Johnson in his paper states his belief that the oil is formed originally from organic matter in the shale, and is forced out of the shale into the porous reservoir of the sand above the shale. He states further, that as you go deeper iii the measures where there is an increasing overburdens, the oil becomes less and the gas increases in large proportion, or lie says that the oil is forced back out of the sand by pressure, into the shale.

The methods about to be described have been tested in practice, and are believed to be specially adapted to such extended topographical surveys as mining engineers in particular are sometimes called upon to execute. The assistance of Mr. H. 0. Flipper in the preparation of this paper, and his practical authorship of the second part, is hereby acknowledged. I. Photographic SuRveying. The writer was recently employed; together with Mr. H. O. Flipper, to survey the properties of the Plata-Reina de Sonora Mining and Milling Company, situated in the mining district of Las Planchas, District of Magdalena, State of Sonora, Mexico. These properties, now owned by an American corporation, of which M. W. Evans, of New Orleans, is president, and Richard A. Pomeroy is resident superintendent, are famous in the history of Mexican mining, as the place where planchus, or bolas de plata were foulld about the beginning of the last century. Ward, the English CILargh d7Affaires in Mexico from 1826 to 1828, writing at that epoch, says: "The idea [that the ores in the north of Mexico were richer than those in the south] probably originated in the discovery of the famous bolas de plata [balls of silver] of Arizona [Planchas de Plata de Arizona, a stock-ranch in northern Mexico], in the beginning of the last century, which was, and probably still is, believed in Europe to be one of those fables with which mining countries always abonnd. But the attention of the present government of Mexico having been drawn to the subject, a search was made in the viceregal archives, by order of the president, for the correspondence which was known to have taken place respecting it in the year 1736. This correspondence I have seen, and I have in my possession a certified copy of a decree of Philip the Fifth, dated Aranjuez, 28th May, 1741, the ohject of which was to terminate a prosecution, instituted by the Royal Fiscal, against the discoverers of Arizona, for having defrauded the treasnry of the duties payable upon the masses of pore silver found there. The decree states the weight of the balls, sheets and other pieces of silver discovered (bolas, planchas, y otras piezas de plata), to have amounted to 165 arroba, 8 pounds, in all, 4133 pounds; and mentions particularly one mass of pure silver, which weighed 108 arrobas (2700

The Legislature of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania at its last session passed a new act dealing with barrier pillars, which may have a wide interest in other states. In the past the laws of Pennsylvania have required that the superintendent of a mine "shall not permit the mining of coal within 50 ft. of any abandoned mine containing a dangerous accumulation of water, until said danger has been removed by driving a passageway to tap and drain off said water, as provided for in this act: Provided, That the thickness of the barrier pillars shall be greater aid shall be in proportion of one foot of pillar thickness to each one and one-quarter feet of water head, if in the judgment of the engineer of the property and that of the district inspector it is necessary for the safety of the persons working in the mine." Thus it has happened that a thickness of several hundred feet has necessarily been left in pillars in mining. It has seemed to many in the mining industry that this left an unnecessary amount of coal in pillars, and did not provide that the pillar be left equally on the two sides of the mine. As a result the General Assembly of 1927 by Joint Resolution authorized the Governor to appoint a Commission of "seven prominent citizens, of whom four shall be recognized mining engineers, one shall be a hydraulic engineer, one a geologist of recognized standing in his profession, and one a State mine inspector from the bituminous coal mining district, to investigate and report upon barrier pillars in the bituminous coal region." The Governor appointed the following Commission: Morris Coulter, Clearfield Bituminous Coal Corp., Indiana, Pa.; A. E. Roberts, Monroe Coal Mining Co., Revloc, Pa.; George T. Lewis, Westmoreland Coal Co., Irwin, Pa.; Morris Knowles, hydraulic engineer, Pittsburgh, Pa.; Thomas A. Mather, State Inspector of Mines, Tyrone, Pa.; A. B. Jessup, Anthracite Coal Operators Association, Jeddo, Pa.; George H. Ashley, State Geologist, Harrisburg, Pa. Mr. Coulter was elected Chairman and Mr. Ashley, Secretary. This Commission held meetings in Harrisburg, Johnstown and Pittsburgh. It obtained and considered the laws and experiences of other states and European countries. Molecular refraction is introduced as a new and improved third parameter for prediction of the PVT behavior of hydrocarbon systems. This parameter, characterizing the complex as well as the pure hydrocarbon systems (1) is a direct measure of London dispersion forces which affect the PVT behavior; (2) can be measured directly, accurately and easily for complex as well as pure hydrocarbon systems; (3) varies significantly between the reference substances thus allowing accurate interpolation of PVT properties; and (4) has a fundamentally sound basis. Molal average molecular refraction was used with the pseudocritical mixing rule proposed by Leland and Mueller to predict the molal volume of liquid and vapor for 84 published data points on nC4-nCI0, Cl-nC5, Cl-nC4-nC10 systems in the region of coexisting vapor-liquid and at the critical point. The same technique was applied to predict the densities of liquid hydrocarbon mixtures in the two-phase and single-phase regions near the critical point for seven different systems each having different properties of the heptanes-plus fraction, but all simulating the fluids of either gas-condensate or volatile oil reservoirs. A modification of the Leland-Mueller mixing rule for the determination of pseudocritical properties is also presented which yields more accurate liquid density predictions than the original form when used with the proposed third parameter. INTRODUCTION The PVT behavior of multicomponent systems has received widespread attention in the literature in recent years. A large portion of the reported work has stemmed from attempts to overcome the inherent difficulties encountered when using the standard compressibility-factor chart which shows 2 as a function of reduced temperature T, and and reduced pressure p,. This chart assumes that z, is constant for all systems. The error in this assumption is not pronounced for pipeline-type gases high in methane and low in heavy ends, particularly when contained at moderate pressures. For such gases the error in the calculated z is usually less than 2 to 3 per cent. However, the reliability of this approach becomes somewhat nebulous for gas condensate and volatile oil systems at high pressure. One logical approach has been to recognize the variation of 2,. This idea was first suggested by Meissner and Seferianl and used by Lyderson, Greenkorn and Hougen2 to prepare extensive tables of thermodynamic properties. Other third parameters have been proposed by Stockmeyer, Kihara, Riedel, Lightfoot, Bloomer and Pitzer. These were tested by Satter and Campbel13 for many gas mixtures and it was shown that they were inter-related. All of these third parameters have a common fault — they cannot be directly evaluated for the heptanes-plus fraction. Consequently, one necessary requisite of an improved method for predicting the density of multicomponent hydrocarbon systems, was development of a third parameter that could be evaluated for that fraction. PREVIOUS MULTICOMPONENT DENSITY PREDICTION METHODS Sage and Lacey4 suggested a method of using partial molal volumes for computing the density of hydrocarbon gas mixture for pressures to 3,000 psi. In this technique, they approximate the complex multicomponent gaseous mixtures by a quarternary system of methane, ethane, propane and butane. Sage, Hicks and Lacey5 suggest a method of using partial molal volumes for computing the density of hydrocarbon liquids. The results agree within 3 per cent of the experimental values. However, the composition range is limited to about 10 per cent by weight of methane. Consequently, this correlation does not cover the low-molecular-weight liquid similar to natural gasoline and high-pressure gas condensates.
