IN this paper I shall attempt a description of the successful extraction of coal from this property after it had been on fire for probably fifty years, or more, and after attempts, made at various times, which had still left considerable coal behind. The Richmond coal-field has a well-founded bad reputation, arising from the circumstance that many of its collieries have had to be abandoned, from time to time, if not entirely, on account of fires, caused by spontaneous combustion, to which the character of the coal in this field renders them peculiarly liable. While I fully assent to the opinion that this trouble lies in the nature of the coal, which is highly bituminous, and the seams of which are, moreover, divided by slaty bands, through which, as also in the coal, iron pyrites is more or less disseminated, often in microscopically small particles, I must, nevertheless, declare that many lamentable disasters, causing great loss of life and property, could have been avoided if a suitable system of mining had been pursued in all the collieries. If this could not have been done from the beginning of mining in this section of country (the history of which can be traced back to over one hundred years), at least experience enough existed upon this subject thirty and forty years ago to dictate the avoidance of the dangers to a considerable extent. It is therefore necessary here to refer first, in a few remarks, to the character of the coal deposits, particularly in this immediate neighborhood, the Midlothian being one of the oldest and most extensive mines, and some of its coal being much subjected to spontaneous combustion. I must also refer to the history of former managements to explain more clearly the results which were arrived at. The repressuring of oil-producing formations during the flush stage of production, although requiring primarily the same procedure as operations on formations where the gas pressure has been depleted, offers several advantages of major importance, the value of which has not heretofore been demonstrated. It is the purpose of this paper to present an account of some recent operations of this character and the economic effects on the properties where they were applied. The principal objective in all repressuring operations is to secure an effective diffusion of the input energy to all parts of the producing sand. If this can be accomplished, success is assured during the remainder of the life of the property; if not, it will be temporary only and will be followed by difficulties, .and the maximum possible recovery will not be obtained. During the past year in Texas, the Cook pool in Shackelford County, and the Turbeville pool in Archer County, while still in their flush stage of production, have been subjected to repressuring operations to observe their reaction to this process during the early stage of their productive periods. The repressuring operations carried on in each of these pools will be discussed separately in this paper in order to show peculiarities which were present in one pool but were not observed in the other. Turbeville Pool The Turbeville pool is in Archer County, about 30 rniles south of Wichita Falls. The productive sand varies in thickness from 10 to 30 ft., the average being about 16 ft. The depth of the sand varies from 1450 to 1530 ft. The developed productive area to date is approximately 200 acres, but the limits of the pool have not yet been proved. The sand varies considerably in different parts of the pool with respect to both porosity and permeability. The gravity of the oil varies from 39 to 41° A. P. I. There were some wells which flowed for a few days after completion but during 1927 all production was secured by pumping. The

IN order to control a chemical process by other than empirical, rule of thumb methods, two types of knowledge concerning the reactions involved must be available: (1) the thermodynamics of the reactions, and (2), by no means less important for efficient operation, the mechanisms and kinetics of the reactions. Information on the thermodynamic side enables the operator to decide upon initial and final conditions, whether heat must be .added or removed from the system, whether the reactions proceed farthest in the desired direction at high pressure or low, etc. Knowledge of the mechanisms involves the determination of the individual steps by which an initial set of reactants, under given conditions, proceed to give the desired final products and kinetic studies upon which the mechanisms are based give the speed at which each of these reactions or steps take place. Thus thermodynamic studies of a 'reaction enable the operator to control the direction and extent to which the reaction can proceed, while kinetic studies enable him to control rates and thus the time' efficiency of the operations. The thermodynamics set the limit to which the reacting system approaches; the kinetics tell how fast the system actually approaches this limit. The two types of information are complementary and not antagonistic even though in discussing the mechanism the introduction of thermodynamics is entirely needless and generally of no assistance, while in thermodynamic studies mechanism need not even be mentioned.

Thin sheet copper in wide widths and long lengths is being made electrolytically on a commercial scale at the Raritan Copper Works, Perth Amboy, N. J. This achievement is the result of three years of intensive development preceded by almost ten years of intermittent research. While the idea of producing sheet copper by the electrolytic process is old, the literature on the subject is limited. It is evident, however, that the idea has been attractive to many investigators for years, if the issued patents in the field may be taken as an indication. These patents may be divided into three groups. In one group metal is deposited on some form of endless cathode, of which a revolving cylinder or drum is the most common. The cathode moves slowly and at such a rate that metal of the desired thickness is deposited during one pass through the electrolyte. The deposited metal is stripped off the cathode at a point above the solution level and, after washing and drying, is wound up immediately. In the next group of patents a band of thin metal is increased in thickness by being guided through an electrolytic tank in opposition to suitable anodes. The third group covers means of producing sheets of definite dimensions where flat plates or revolving cylinders are used as cathodes. With such cathodes, sheets of definite dimensions are built up to the desired thickness and then stripped off. The process as worked out at the Raritan Copper Works combines the methods of the first two groups. In the first stage a sheet weighing 1 oz. to the square foot is produced on a revolving cylinder. This sheet is increased to any desired thickness in the second stage. In the first stage (Fig. 1) a lead-covered copper drum is mounted horizontally on a lead-lined concrete tank so that it. is partly immersed in the electrolyte. The cylindrical surface of the drum immersed in the electrolyte is opposed by lead anodes spaced about 36 in. from it. The electrolyte, made up of appropriate quantities of copper and sulfuric acid, flows into and out of the tank continuously. The ebullition of gas at the surface of the anodes induces a vigorous circulation of electrolyte between the anodes and the drum surface, which is augmented by means of compressed air introduced through a pipe between the ends of the anodes under the center of the drum, not indicated on the diagram. This report is the accumulation of eight years of experience on only one small phase in the business of oil production. It is not intended as a final report but rather as a progress report dealing with the internal corrosion of oil field dehydrating tanks. The corrosion of dehydrating tanks continues to be a problem in the production of crude oil. The deterioration hy corrosion of these tanks falls into three general classifications: (1) Atmospheric corrosion of exterior areas, (2) corrosion of the underside of deck and the rafters and top area of the upper row of staves in that part of the tank which is known as the vapor space, and (3) corrosion of the bottom and shell areas, and the steam coils which are normally immersed in water and thus exposed to the corrosive action of the water. Atmospheric corrosion is primarily a paint problem, and has been omitted in this discussion. The corrosion in the vapor space, in this company's experience, which has been of great concern only in one area. has also been omitted in this discussion. The third, and most troublesome type of corrosion, and the one with which this report deals, is that which occurs in the water-exposed areas of dehydrating tanks, and, to a lesser degree. in some stock tanks. The operating temperature of these waters varies from 80°F to 160°F and the salt counts run from a few thousand to as high as 25.000 parts per million. Corrosion in these tanks occurs in three forms: (1) pits, (2) ringworm type of attack along the vertical and horizontal bolt seams, and (3) as a general attack, spread over a wide area. Steam Coils In dehydrating tanks, our experience has been that the steam coils are the first to show signs of corrosion, and then the shell and bottom areas. This action is not uniform throughout this company's operations. Some installations have coil troubles with very little tank trouble, and some show just the opposite. But in the majority of cases the coils are the more seriously corroded areas. This may be partly due to the fact that we have tried by periodic application to keep a protective coating on the interior areas of the tanks, and some protection has been afforded by these coatings. Through the years several types of hot and cold coatings have been tried with many various methods of cleaning the steel, ranging from use of cleaning solvents to hot and cold Oakite washes, as well as sandblasting. Although experience has shown that a longer life expectancy of a coating is possible after a very thorough steel cleaning job, it has still been necessary to recoat these tanks at least every two or three years. Until a few years ago, vertical spiral steam coil bundles were installed when the tanks were originally erected. When these coils needed replacement, in some cases within 18 months, it was necessary to remove a couple of shell staves to accomplish this task. This required a down time period of several days and was often very inconvenient to the production operations of the leases. This problem was considered on the basis that the coils were expendable, and thus. to eliminate any unnecessary down time when changing coils, the vertical spiral coils were discarded in favor of horizontal flat coils which could be taken in and out of the tanks by way of the cleanout openings, and put together with unions. This made a fairly easily replaceable and repairable coil. But it was still very much of a nuisance when repairs were necessary. Efforts to increase the useful life of the dehydrating tanks led to the adoption of galvanized tanks at an increased initial cost. The zinc coating was depended upon for protection and no other protective coatings were applied. In July, 1944. during the development of a new lease, a 3-ring 1,500 bbl, black iron water tank was converted into a dehydrating tank with steam coils to handle the new production. This tank was coated inside with a cold, brushed-on coating, for protection against corrosion. After approximately 18 months of service, holes developed in the tank and the steam coils. The tank was emptied and cleaned for repairs. The coils were so badly pitted that it was felt advisable to replace them. Coating Becomes Loose Inspection of the tank showed the protective coating to be still in place but loose, and numerous blisters were in evidence. A closer inspection showed that the interior of this tank was so badly pitted under the coating that any further attempt to use the tank was inadvisable. This tank was therefore discarded and a new galvanized tank ordered and set up at considerable expense and inconvenience. In April, 1946, another dehydrating tank installation was made on an adjoining lease. This installation consisted of a 1,500 bbl. 3-ring galvanized tank with two sets of flat steam coils 12 in. and 24 in. up from the bottom. In September, 1947. seventeen months after installation. salt showed up in the boiler feed water. When the dehydrating tank was opened and cleaned, the steam coils were found to be badly pitted — several holes having penetrated through the wall of the pipe. New coils were installed.

Lightly deformed columbiun single crystals which contained only parallel hoins or purullel and intersecting trains were annealed at 1000' and 1600"C. No re-crystallizntion occurred in specimens hawing only parallel twins. Only noncoherent twin boundaries nzipated at 1000°C but both coherent and noncoherent ones moved al 1600°C. Recrystallization occurred within a few minutes at twin intersections at 1000°C. The orientation 01 the recrystallized grains differed front that of both the matrix and deformation twins, but could he derired by (110) and/or(112) rotations. ALTHOUGH twinning in metals has been extensively studied, there have been no definitive studies of the annealing behavior of crystals containing deformation twins. Some effects observed after annealing deformation twins have been summarized by Cahn1 and Hall2. Any or all of these phenomena are observed: 1) The twins may contract so that the sharp edges of the lens become blunted, and eventually the twin may disappear entirely. 2) The twins may balloon out at an edge, giving rise to a large grain having the same orientation as the twin. 3) The specimen may recrystallize; i.e., new grains are nucleated and grow at the expense of the twins and the crystal immediately adjoining the twin. Such grains have orientations which are not present before. Contraction has been observed in iron,3 titanium,3, 4 beryllium,5 zinc,8, 7 Fe-A1 alloy,' and uranium.9 Long anneals at high temperatures are required to have any appreciable effect in these metals and only thin twins are absorbed. Lens-shaped twins are absorbed from the edges: the thin, almost parallel-sided twins are usually punctured in several places and each piece contracts independently. Absorption is very gradual and no sudden cooperative jumps have been observed. The expansion of a twin into a larger grain of identical orientation is unusual, but such growth has been observed in iron,"'" zinc,6 and uranium." Crystals which have been deformed simultaneously by slip and twinning recrystallize first in the area adjacent to the twin. New grains appear faster where the twins intersect: but isolated twins, especially if thick, can also give rise to new grains. This type of recrystallization occurs in zinc.6, 7, 12, 13 and beryllium.14 Reed-Hill noted, in a single crystal of magnesium, the nucleation of a recrystallized grain at a twin intersection which had the same orientation as the second-order twin and which grew into the highly strained matrix.15 Short-time annealing has been reported to cause no change in the deformation twins in vanadium,16 columbium, 17, 18 tantalum,19 tungsten,'' and zinc.7 The purpose of this investigation was to note the effects of annealing on the coherent and noncoherent boundaries of deformation twins in columbium and to locate the nucleating sites for recrystallization. The orientation relationships, which the new recrystallized grains have with the parent crystal and the deformation twins, were also determined. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Single crystals of columbium were obtained by cutting large grains from electron-beam-melted buttons which contained 10 to 50 ppm C, 10 to 100 ppm O,, 1 to 10 ppm H2, and 10 to 15 ppm N2. The crystals were hand-ground and chemically polished until all grain boundaries were removed. The specimens were mounted in an epoxy resin and a face of each crystal was mechanically polished on a Syntron polisher using Linde A and then Linde B polishing compounds. After all faces were mechanically polished, the crystal was electrolytically polished to remove all distortion due to cutting and grinding. Laue photographs were taken of all faces of the crystals to determine the quality and orientation of each crystal. The crystals were compressed about 10 pct at -196 C in a specially constructed compression cage with an Instron tensile machine. Each crystal was separated from the top and bottom anvils by teflon films which acted as a lubricant. With the specimen crystal in position, the entire cage was cooled to -196°C by being submerged in a Dewar containing liquid nitrogen. The crystals were compressed at a rate of 0.02 in. per min and the load was recorded on a strip-chart recorder. After deformation the crystals were mechanically polished on 600-grit paper and Pellon cloth with Linde A and Linde B polishing compounds. The crystal faces were chemically polished and then etched. The twin planes were identified metallographically from an analysis of the twin traces on two surfaces. Annealing was carried out by placing each crystal in a columbium bucket made from the same electron-beam-melted material as the crystal itself and suspending the bucket by a tantalum wire in a quartz tube. After a vacuum of 10-7 Torr was attained, a furnace at 1000" or 1600 C was raised into position and the crystals held for various lengths of time. The crystals were repolished and etched after annealing to remove any surface contamination. Approximately 0.010 in. was removed during this process. The resulting surface was examined metallographically for microstructural changes due to annealing. A microbeam Laue camera mounted on a Hilger Micro-focus X-ray unit was used to determine the Orientstions of the recrystallized grains. This X-ray micro-beam camera had a 0.002-in.-diam collimator and incorporated the ideas of both and and chisWik21 and Cahn.22

A previous publication1§ has described the effect of quenching stresses on the lattice parameter values of high-purity aluminum-copper alloys particularly with reference to the solution and precipitation of CuAl². A similar study has been made of the aluminum-rich aluminum-magnesium alloys. Attention has been directed in the present investigation to the magnitude of the quenching stresses as affected by the specimen size and shape, the number of solute atoms and the quenching rate. The effect of cooling stresses in causing plastic defomation or cracking has been considered in relation to the physical properties of the alloy On reheating alloys in the two-phase field, the time required for precipitation to occur has been observed in connection with the degrec of supersaturation, the rate of diffusion of the solute atoms as a function of the comparative atomic radii, degree of strain, temperature of reheating and grain size. A few qualitative comparisons on the relative effect of these factors have been drawn between the aluminum-copper alloys and the aluminum-magnesium alloys. Strain in Solid-solution Alloys A 10 per cent magnesium alloy ill the form of chill-cast bars was furnished by the Aluminum Company of America through the courtesy of L. W. Kempf. Additional alloys were prepared using alllminum (99.95 per cent Al) and high-grade magnesium. The alloys listed in Table 1 were melted in an Acheson graphite crucible under a flux of fused MgCl², CaC12, NaCI. Chill-cast rods were sealed under vacuum in Pyrex glass, homogenized several days at 450' C., air-cooled and machined to rods of from 1/8 to ¾-in. dia. The original power-plant of the Standard Company has been described* by Mr. T. H. Leggett, late president and manager of the company; but since the presentation of his paper considerable additions have been made, which will be found interesting because of the engineering features involved and of the attainment of a high degree of flexibility with the inflexible, two-wire, alternating system of electrical transmission. Although these additions have been completed during the last year, they constitute, to a large extent, only the carrying out of plans that belonged to the original conception of the installation. The regular operation of the water-power through the winter proved very difficult; there was a considerable length of ditch to be kept open, and, as the stream is small and any freezing night may stop the whole flow of water, there was the .additional trouble of having no reserve to draw upon. The rule for the winter is, that after a night of hard frost water begins to move in the canon before noon on all but the coldest days. To obviate the nuisance of the anchor-ice, and to make available all of the water, a dam of sufficient height to impound several days' run of water has been built across the canon, 3875 feet above the power-house, and provided with pressurepipe well below the surface. In place of the 1571 feet of pipeline from penstock to power-house, there has been substituted a line 3875 feet long to bring water direct from the dam. The dam is of logs, cribbed up in squares of about 12 feet, ballasted with earth and rock and sheathed on the water-face with 3-inch plank.

GRAVITY concentration is a general term designating processes for separating and sorting granular material by means of forces that depend on the density, size and shape of the particles. When these forces are applied to the particles the latter are caused to move, those of a given density along one path and those of a different density along another, until ultimately they are sufficiently separated to be removed from the operation of the process. The forces producing this separation are in general complex and, unfortunately, no completely rigorous analysis of them has as yet been devised. The science of the hydrodynamics of viscous fluids deals with the little that is known about the problem. Every observer of nature is familiar with the fact that an object moving in a fluid encounters a force of resistance. We have only to walk against a brisk wind or stir a cup of coffee, or observe the slow fall of a grain of sand in water, to experience directly the fact that such forces exist. The exchange of force between an object and a fluid in which it is moving operates on the fluid as well as on the object. Thus a sailboat may be set in motion by the force exerted by the wind on the sail; but the sail also deflects the wind-furthermore, the water in which the boat floats is set in motion by the force exerted by the boat as it cleaves through the water. The wind is thus enabled to do work on the water through the intermediary of the boat. In general, an object moving through a fluid encounters a force that opposes the motion and also acts to change the motion of the fluid. In gravity concentration we are dealing with this force of resistance acting on the granular particles that are to be separated. Furthermore, the motion induced in the fluid by a particle will in turn affect the motion

THE milling practice at Mascot, at present, consists of dry crushing to 5/8 in., jigging, fine grinding, and flotation. The ore arrives at the mill from two mines, No. 1 mine shaft being located in the mill proper, and No. 2 mine shaft being situated about 2000 ft. east of the mill. No. 2 mine is served by a coarse-crushing plant and aerial tramway to the mill bins. In jigging the No. 2 mine ore, 50 per cent. of the mill feed is rejected by the jigs as a jig tailing ranging from 5/8 in. to 10 mesh; the balance of this ore, after removing a jig concentrate, is ground to flotation feed. In jigging No. 1 mine ore, approximately 80 per. cent. of the mill feed is rejected as a coarse jig tailing, and the balance is ground to flotation feed without the removal of a jig concentrate. The difference in the treatment is due to the fact that No. 2 mine ore carries a higher content of zinc than that from No. 1 mine. Of the total concentrates produced, 30 per cent. are made on jigs and 70 per cent. by flotation. At present, 1350 tons of No. 2 ore and 800 tons of No. 1 ore are treated each 24 hours. The recoveries for a typical week are as follows: Heads 3.55 Jig concentrates 61.30 Jig tails 0.80 Flotation concentrates 60.60 Flotation tails 0.09 Extraction 86.50 The associated minerals are a straw-colored sphalerite, dolomite, calcite, pyrite, quartz, and a small amount of greenockite, which occurs as a stain and sometimes small crystals along with sphalerite, but is comparatively rare. Pyrite is present in small quantities, usually less than 0.5 per cent.; quartz occurs in bands a few inches thick. A complete analysis of the ore is as follows:

A considerable quantity of experimental data is available on the effect of time, temperature, work-hardening and composition on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys. There is, however, little unity of purpose or generality in most of the studies and, because the number of variables is large, the results often are not applicable to the problems that arise in practice. Furthermore, the customary expression of the effect of different variables as separate curves or as three-dimensional diagrams with time, temperature and the dependent variables as coordinates, renders the task of selecting the optimum time and temperature of precipitation treatment, with respect to their simultaneous but unequal etfect on the various properties, exceedingly difficult. The introduction of precipitation treatments to raise the yield strength of 24s-type alloys has created a need for a method of correlating and summarizing the effect of time and temperature on the mechanical properties and susceptibility to inter-crystalline corrosion. Correlation is particularly desirable because the choice of time and temperature is of necessity a compromise to achieve the best possible combination of properties, and the optimum conditions cannot he accurately specified unless the data are in a form in which the alternatives can be readily compared. Therefore, the work described here was undertaken to find a common relationship that would be capable of expressing the effect of precipitation time and temperature on the various properties and by means of which the relative effects could be correlated and their interpretation facilitated. Review of Previous Work In connection with an investigation of the interrelation of age-hardening and creep performance of nickel-silicon-copper alloys, Jenkins and Bucknalll demonstrated that the time required to attain maximum hardness and tensile strength could be expressed by a relationship of the form: t = K • io"^ (i) where t is the time in hours and T the temperature of aging, expressed in degrees absolute, and m and K are constants. They also pointed out that this expression is analogous to that which describes the change of the diffusion coefficient D with temperature; namely, D = Ae-~/m (2) Later, Cohen used this relationship in studies of the mechanism of age-hardening of a silver.rich copper alloyZ and of duralumin.3

THERE is probably no phase of basic open-hearth steelmaking that is more of an art and less of a science than mold and pouring practice. It varies widely from plant to plant; consequently it is obviously impossible to set down in detail in this chapter the many ramifications of practice that are now used. The discussion that follows therefore attempts only to give an outline of the more common methods, with examples sufficient to indicate some of the variations in procedure, and to emphasize a few of the many underlying problems that face the open-hearth operator at the pouring platform. MOLD DESIGN Ingot molds are hollow castings of considerable wall thickness. Despite this, non-uniformity in wall thickness should be strictly avoided to prevent the setting up of unnecessary stresses. Molds are cast in various forms, sizes, and shapes depending on the type of steel, and on whether the ingot is to be withdrawn from the mold or the mold from the ingot. The selection of ingot-mold material, which is usually cupola or blast-furnace iron containing approximately 3.5 per cent carbon, 1 per cent silicon, 0.9 per cent manganese, 0.2 per cent phosphorus, and 0.07 per cent sulphur, is governed by numerous considerations that affect mold life. (1) Factors in addition to wall thickness that should be given primary consideration at the foundry are casting skin, shrinkage stresses, and casting temperature. Factors in Mold Design. In use, mold thickness is of greatest importance, for it must be heavy enough to freeze the molten metal rising in the mold and to reduce the temperature of the steel below that of the melting point of cast iron to prevent the inner surface of the mold from melting, which would result in the welding of the ingot to the mold. The skin of an ingot, which solidities immediately upon contact with the relatively cold walls of the mold, must soon become thick enough to contract on the fluid mass and pull away slightly from the sides of the mold. The separation of the ingot from the mold depends entirely on the heat taken up by the mold from the steel.

A considerable quantity of experimental data is available on the effect of time, temperature, work-hardening and composition on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys. There is, however, little unity of purpose or generality in most of the studies and, because the number of variables is large, the results often are not applicable to the problems that arise in practice. Furthermore, the customary expression of the effect of different variables as separate curves or as three-dimensional diagrams with time, temperature and the dependent variables as coordinates, renders the task of selecting the optimum time and temperature of precipitation treatment, with respect to their simultaneous but unequal etfect on the various properties, exceedingly difficult. The introduction of precipitation treatments to raise the yield strength of 24s-type alloys has created a need for a method of correlating and summarizing the effect of time and temperature on the mechanical properties and susceptibility to inter-crystalline corrosion. Correlation is particularly desirable because the choice of time and temperature is of necessity a compromise to achieve the best possible combination of properties, and the optimum conditions cannot he accurately specified unless the data are in a form in which the alternatives can be readily compared. Therefore, the work described here was undertaken to find a common relationship that would be capable of expressing the effect of precipitation time and temperature on the various properties and by means of which the relative effects could be correlated and their interpretation facilitated. Review of Previous Work In connection with an investigation of the interrelation of age-hardening and creep performance of nickel-silicon-copper alloys, Jenkins and Bucknalll demonstrated that the time required to attain maximum hardness and tensile strength could be expressed by a relationship of the form: t = K • io"^ (i) where t is the time in hours and T the temperature of aging, expressed in degrees absolute, and m and K are constants. They also pointed out that this expression is analogous to that which describes the change of the diffusion coefficient D with temperature; namely, D = Ae-~/m (2) Later, Cohen used this relationship in studies of the mechanism of age-hardening of a silver.rich copper alloyZ and of duralumin.3

USING etch-pit techniques, Johnston and Gilman' have shown that the stress dependence of dislocation velocity can be represented by the expression where r, is the dislocation velocity, a is the applied stress, and oa, is the stress to produce a unit velocity. Noble and Hul12 showed that the exponent m is strain-dependent and increases rapidly in the work-hardening region. This was explained by arguing that in the work-hardened material the applied stress required for any given velocity will be greater than in the annealed material by an amount equal to a back stress due to work hardening. schadler3 has stressed the importance of substructure as a possible source of error in dislocation velocity measurements, and took care to make velocity measurements in which dislocations moved such short distances that interactions with boundaries were avoided. schadler3 also pointed out that, if standard testing equipment is used, measurements of m from flow stress data could be seriously in error in materials with a high initial work-hardening rate. Noble and Hu112 have further argued that, due to the strain dependence of m , the extrapolation to zero strain4 to obtain the true value of m can be justified only in the preyield region. Microstrain experiments in high-purity iron5,6 have led to the conclusion that aiA (Ref. 5) (defined as the stress to first produce a permanent set of 10-6 in. per in.) and oflow are not controlled by the same deformation mechanism. It has been proposed5,6 that aA is governed by the lattice resistance to the motion of screw dislocations in a given slip plane and that oflow is controlled by the lattice resistance to a full-scale cross slip. The purpose of this note is to extend Noble and Hull's argument further and to show that measurements of m from flow stress data can be in error due to the rapid increase in stress in the microstrain region6 when stress is increased beyond aA. THE origin of wrought iron may be taken as coincident with the earliest record of ferrous products. The limitations of primitive methods of manufacture undoubtedly resulted in a material conforming to the general characteristics of what we now classify as wrought iron. Iron has been known from prehistoric times. It is frequently mentioned in Egyptian literature, and some samples in the British Museum are believed to date from 3733 B. C. Iron instruments, tools and weapons were used in Greece in 1400 B. C., and in Assyria and. Italy in 1100 B. C. History records their use in Central and Western Europe in 1000 B. C. And in Styria and Carinthia before the Christian era. The noted Pillar of Delhi is generally assumed to date from 400 A. D. The use of iron was general in Europe in the Roman Empire, and heat treatment of weapons and tools was then practiced. All of this early iron was the result of direct reduction from the ore. It serves to illustrate the ease with which the extraction may be effected, and to point out the well known principle that a malleable product of relatively high purity may be produced from high-grade iron ore at temperatures well below the fusion point of-the metal. The fact is also emphasized that there is no novelty in the seemingly ideal and constantly recurring attempts to effect direct reduction. Economic and engineering considerations have been dominant factors in dictating today's two-step practice in the manufacture of wrought iron and steel. Bear' in mind that all of this history antedated the blast furnace, and a knowledge and use of cast iron. It was only in attempts to get greater output by use of shaft-type furnaces, that cast iron was produced in Germany in the period 1300 to 1400 A. D. This was the result of longer contact with the carbon of the fuel, and higher temperatures in the furnace. This period marked the beginning of the existing two-stage operation, involving as the second step the refining of the. cast iron to a malleable product. For a time this was effected in small hearths not unlike a blacksmith's forge.

THIS Rock Chapel plant of Consolidated Quarries Corporation (Fig. 1) is three miles northeast of Lithonia, DeKalb County, Georgia. It was opened about eight years ago for crushed stone aggregate. This paper reviews a number of experiments that have been tried in drilling and blasting, and gives the practice in use today. It also present, several theories on the action of explosives in this type of blasting. [ ] The rock worked is a bare dome of granite gneiss about 3000 ft. in diameter, rising 150 ft. above the surrounding ground (Fig. 2). It is uniform in composition and quality, without seams, and extends downward to unknown depth below the quarry floor. A water well drilled 600 ft. remained in the same rock. The principal difficulty encountered in blasting is an easy split, which tends to break clown the rock in large blocks.

For sixty years—in fact, ever since the inception of the basic steelmaking process —basic slags have been the subject of study by chemists, metallurgists and petrog-raphers! with the purpose of providing a better understanding of the reactions between the slag and the metal during the refining process. The result of this work and of the researches of mineralogists and physical chemists into the chemistry of oxide systems is a considerable body of literature dealing not only with slags themselves but with equilibrium relationships in systems synthesized from pure components. Since any actual slag is a multicom-ponent system more complex than any yet worked out in the laboratory, a complete solution to the problem is still far away. The writers have recently published a paper1 which they believe sheds light on the role of the slag in the elimination of phosphorus and it is the purpose of the present paper to discuss the metallurgical applications of that work. Since the pioneer investigations on the constitution of basic slags carried on by Stead and Risdale, Carnot and Richards, Hilgenstock and others in the I88o's, a considerable body of literature on this subject has appeared. Many of the more important of these papers were summarized in the previous paper,l therefore they will not be reviewed here. PetRographic Study The present writers have had occasion, over a period of years, to examine petro-graphically a great number of basic steel-making slags having a very wide range of chemical compositions and made under various conditions of operating practice. Although certain of these slags exhibit some unusual features, it is a remarkable fact that the great majority of mature slags show certain typical characteristics, which persist throughout the wide range of chemical compositions. The typical mature slag usually appears under the microscope to consist of two phases. The phase of primary crystallization is light colored and doubly refracting. If separated mechanically and subjected to chemical analysis, it is found to consist essentially of SiO2, CaO, and P2O6. Sometimes, although not usually, two such silicate-phosphate phases are found. The other conspicuous phase is dark in color and optically isotropic, and occurs as the interstitial material between the grains of the light colored phase. This dark colored interstitial phase when analyzed is found to consist essentially of FeO, Fe2O3, MnO, and MgO. In some 'lags high in iron oxide, particularly those from low-carbon heats, dicalcium ferrite is found. This phase is dark reddish brown in color and anisotropic.
