This study was made to determine trends in fresh water usage by California petroleum refineries, to forecast fresh water requirements to 1975, and to evaluate water conservation practices. Statistical data used in the study were obtained largely from published sources and from records of selected companies. An adequate sampling of the State's refining capacity was obtained, and the data were extrapolated to the total California refining capacity. A breakdown of the data was then made on the basis of the following refining regions: (1) the Los Angeles Basin and Southern Coastal region, (2) the Southern San Joaquin Valley, and (3) the San Francisco Bay area. An unpublished forecast of crude oil input to refineries by a major oil company operating on the West Coast was used as a basis for predicting fresh-water usage. The 1963 fresh water intake by California petroleum refineries was 84 million gallons per day. This is expected to increase to 128 million gallons per day by 1975. The fresh-water to crude-oil ratio is increasing in all regions except the Southern San Joaquin Valley. At present, the supply of fresh water available to almost all of the State's petroleum refineries, mostly from surface sources and company-owned wells, is adequate, although shortages may develop within the foreseeable future. Present conservation methods are centered around the following four objectives: (1) minimum intake of fresh water of the lowest possible quality commensurate with sound technologic practice; (2) optimum recirculation; (3) proper treatment before discharge; and (4) substitution of air cooling for water cooling.

Abstract Zirconium markedly affects the formation of graphite in cast iron and may promote the formation of normal flake gaphite, fine flakes of eutectiform graphite, or spheroid nodular graphite, according to the composition of the Iron and the amount of the zirconium addition. Usually, it is employed in the form of a complex addition agent in order to facilitate its introduction and to guide its effect. The reported applications of zirconium as an inoculant for the production of pearlitic high-strength cast iron indicates that it is most effective as a silicon-manganese-zirconium alloy. Added in this form it reduces chill and minimizes zones of ferrite and eutectiform graphite. In low-sulphur cast iron, zirconium in amounts greater than 0.10 per cent tends to promote the development of eutectiform graphite. These irons are characterized by freedom from primary cementite or normal flake graphite and exhibit very little tendency to shrinkage on solidification. In hyper-eutectic low-sulphur cast iron, zirconium causes the formation of a partially nodular graphite structure. A combination of magnesium with silicon-zirconium alloy was found to produce completely nodular graphite structures without the hazards associated with the addition of elemental magnesium.

The project objective of this contract is to design, develop, and demonstrate a dust collecting system for auger head miners, used in coal seams 40 inches or less in height, which will reduce respirable dust below the limits established by the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. This system was to be incorporated into 3 Wilcox Mark 20 continuous miner. In order to accomplish this, the objective was divided in three main areas. First: To develop a dust control system which would remove by isolation, respirable dust from the face area and areas where miners work. Second: To develop a dust scrubbing system to remove and collect float dust before the air reaches the return airway. Third: To reduce the overall noise levels to which the miners are exposed.

This paper sets forth the mode of ore occurrence, characteristics of ore and country rocks, methods of exploration, development, and. ore extraction, and the costs of underground operation at No. 8 mine of the St. Louis Smelting and Refining Works of the National Lead Co. located near the southern extremity of the Southeast Missouri lead district. The author acknowledges the assistance of E. T. Campbell, geologist, in the preparation of the paragraphs on the geology of the ores. HISTORY The first record of mining in St. Francois County, Mo., concerns more or less shallow semisurface "diggings" which were worked about the year 174-2. In 1864, however, the discovery of the disseminated deposits, the present source of lead, was made on property near the town of Bone Terre. Winslow has estimated the lead-ore production in this county prior to 1869 to be 59,526 tons.3

The effect of the chemical composition of pulverized bituminous coal particles on their physical transformation during the initial stages of combustion has been investigated. The results suggested that cenosphere formation does not require extensive thermal decomposition of the coal particles. The vitrinites in the bituminous coal softened earlier and developed larger cenospheres than the othe macerals. The coal particles swell to a higher extent during combustion than in pyrolysis; however, the cenospheres formed in the former process experienced a higher extent of fragmentation. The development of microporosity occurred predominantly after the resolidification of the swelled char particles. The type of macerals originally in the coal did not significantly affect the microporosity of the chars. Conversely, the morphology and anisotropy of the chars were strongly dependent on the maceral composition of the coal.

"Statistics show3 that in 1927 the United States consumed 60 per cent of the world's production of chromite and produced none. The uses of chromium are rapidly expanding, and a dependable supply is essential to our industries. Since the political and commercial control of our supply of chromite is now in foreign hands it is prudent to determine how this nation can best prepare to supply its need for chromium if the imports were cut off or restricted and whether it is now possible and desirable to stimulate production of chromium from domestic deposits. We have only small amounts of chrome ore of high enough grade to meet present trade requirements. Therefore the Bureau of Mines is making a study of methods for beneficiating our low-grade ores.Chromite (Cr203.Fe0), is the only commercial source of chromium. For refractories, a minimum of 40 per cent Cr203 and a low silica content (5 to 8 per cent) is usually specified. In most instances bricks or lumps having a physical structure that will not crack when heated are required. The only way an inferior ore could be adapted to this use world be to concentrate it and develop a satisfactory binder to make bricks out of the concentrates.For making ferrochrome the requirements are a minimum of 45 per cent Cr203 and an iron content not exceeding one-third of the chromic oxide. On some low-grade ores gravity concentration will give a product meeting these requirements; other ores yield concentrates containing too much iron or other impurities to be saleable."

Reference to the original use of the terms Laurentian and Huronian (and its extension), shows that the former was applied to granitized sedimentary and metamorphic pre-Cambrian rocks, and the gneissoid igneous rocks associated therewith, and the latter to non-fossiliferous rocks supposed to be later. But it appears from the work of Collins, Quirke and others that there is more or less of an overlap, and that of the original Laurentian the Grenville limestone, and some of the granites, may be later than the lowest part of the original Huronian. Before we can decide whether to abandon one or the other of the two terms, or how to delimit them, it is important to know the extent of this overlap. The Pb :U ratio, though not to be depended upon too minutely, does give a real idea of the age of a mineral as it increases with the decay of uranium, and so is greater the longer the time since the uranium was separated: and there are reasonable prospects of help there from in getting a knowledge of the relative age of different granites to assist in solving the problem, as facts already collected show. 1. In addition to increasing grain boundary area during hot working of austenite, the dislocation substructures create potential sites for nucleation of ferrite both at original grain boundaries and at transition boundaries between deformation bands. This development gives rise to a marked increase in the rates of nucleation, of growth and of transformation to ferrite. The combined net effect is product grain refinement that requires less stringent cooling between finish rolling and coiling; hence determination of the above rates would advance process optimization. The important control parameters are the preheat temperature (degree of homogenization), finishing temperature, strain (accumulation near finishing) and the extent of recrystallization after finishing. These effects vary greatly with steel composition; nevertheless, some general rules have been formulated. Moreover, there is also potential for deformation of the refined ferrite. There are other thermo-mechanical processes such as warm forming of metastable alloy austenite to provide a dense substructure that is carried into the martensite on quenching. In other processes, the austenite may be deformed during cooling through the transformation to develop a dense substructure in the ferrite that is stabilized by fine carbides.

The use of liquid hydrogen as a high-energy fuel introduces numerous hazards not ordinarily associated with the use of other more conventional fuels. These hazards are attributable to the unique properties of hydrogen in the liquid and gas states (table 1). Since little work has been conducted on explosion and related hazards of cryogenic fuels, a research program was undertaken to obtain basic data on such dangers for hydrogen and other combustibles under these conditions. These data were used to outline emergency procedures for protecting personnel and equipment when an accidental spillage of liquid hydrogen occurs and to establish a quantity-distance table for the storage of this fuel. The vaporization of liquid hydrogen from a surface is treated as a prob¬lem in heat transfer theory. Two extreme cases are briefly considered: (1) The transfer of heat occurs at constant temperature drop between, the boiling liquid and the hot surface, and (2) the transfer of heat is limited by the rate at which it can flow to the surface from a hot insulating medium. The available data indicate that the former case (1) is applicable when vaporizing from a conducting surface and, initially, when vaporizing from an insulating medium; the latter case (2) is applicable after initial flash vaporization has occurred from the insulating medium. The vaporization rate determines in part the rate at which flammable hydrogen vapor-air mixtures are formed above a spill area. However, the rates at which heat is transferred to the vapor, and air is brought in contact with it also are of importance. Accordingly, the distribution of flammable mixtures above a spill area was determined experimentally. In general, flammable mixtures were found to be both above and within the visible vapor cloud.

This study was a part of two programs: The first, to develop and evaluate high-temperature refractories; the second, to investigate reaction-rate kinetics and phase equilibria in the sinter step of the lime-soda process for the recovery of alumina. High-temperature X-ray diffractometer techniques are to be used extensively in both programs. This paper summarizes developments in the field of high-temperature X-ray diffractometers through 1959, evaluates various furnace designs, and describes briefly the X-ray diffraction facilities of the Federal Bureau of Mines. A more detailed description of the equipment and its calibration is planned in a future paper on thermal expansion and phase inversion of rare-earth oxides.

Track in underground bituminous coal mines was investigated and technology was taken from other industries in order to obtain information on conditions that impair the safety and efficiency of the track and to develop guidelines and useful information on the construction, inspection and maintenance of mine track. Volume 1 contains information on the investigations, observed track conditions, useful technology from railroads and other industries, derivations of track condition descriptors and limits, conclusions, and recommendations. Volume 2, Guidelines, contains recommended standards and practices for mine track. It includes the relation of track conditions to safe speeds; descriptions and limits for measurable track features, such as gage; descriptions of conditions for track components that are normally not measurable, such as subbase soils; construction requirements and techniques; inspection requirements and methods; and methods for managing and performing track maintenance work. It does not repeat the summary or? derivations. Volume 3, Inspection Handbook, summarizes recommended standards and procedures from Volume II and provides related information for ready reference by inspectors in the mines. As a research product to be used in mines, it does not repeat the summary, derivations or references.

Under various state laws enacted mostly within the last 20 years, reclamation requirements and standards for hard-rock mining operations have been established virtually everywhere in the western United States. Unlike the uniform and detailed coal mine reclamation requirements under the federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act ( "SMCRA" ) and state programs mode led after SMCRA, the various state law hard-rock mine reclamation requirements are based upon a variety of objectives, and therefore are subject to varying standards from state to state. While the diversity of reclamation requirements complicates the determination of what reclamation measures will be required at any particular mine, there are valid reasons for this diversity. There are dozens of different commodities mined in the United States, and mining methods are different for each commodity. Local natural conditions such as climate, precipitation, geology, hydrology, and biology vary widely across the county. Site-specific conditions also affect mining and reclamation methods. Also, factors such as economics, land use, and environmental protection issues receive different priorities in different states and communities within those states. State reclamation requirements in general provide the flexibility to consider site-specific circumstances, allowing operators to design and engineer the best reclamation measures for each mining site. To the mine developer or manager, reclamation requirements must be translated into design, operational, and closure measures for mine planning. Each of these measures must then be assigned additional costs to be factored into the economic decisions for a particular mining operation. On a broader level, reclamation costs must be factored into decisions such as where to invest in exploration and mine development. The purpose of this paper is to provide a summary of the state non-coal mine reclamation requirements in twelve western states. This summary comparison may be useful as a starting point in considering how local reclamation requirements will impact potential mining costs.

Recrystallization studies on chrome-bearing spinel materials were made by the Bureau of Mines to determine the effects of certain fluxing agents and cooling rates on the chromium-to-iron ratio of recrystallized spinel. Statistically designed and evaluated tests showed that the ratio of chromium to iron in naturally occurring chrome spinel could be increased from 1.5 to 1 to over 7 to 1 and that the ratio of chromium to iron in the chrome-spinel in a stain-less steel slag could be raised to over 18 to 1. Silica, magnesia, and lime had significant positive effects, while alumina had a significant negative effect. Cooling rates of 200 C per hour in a programmed spiral globar electric furnace were satisfactory for growing crystals of recoverable size.

In 1957 and 1958, ten topographically suitable damsites were investigated along the Peace river between Finlay Forks and Hudson Hope, B.C. Of these, three were eliminated after a reconnaissance survey indicated that the geology was unsuitable for the 650-ft.-high dam contemplated. ?After extensive drilling, five other sites were deemed unfeasible because of geological factors and, in 1959, the two remaining sites were designated as being suitable, one for the high dam and the other for a low dam downstream. The sites are located in the Peace River canyon, on the west and the south? side of Portage mountain, west of Hudson Hope. The site for the large dam, the Portage Mountain dam, has since been investigated by surface mapping, thousands of feet of diamond drilling, a seismic survey, laboratory rock tests and on-site grouting tests in order to establish the possible effect on the dam of all facets of the foundation rocks. Three diversion tunnels, 50 ft. in diameter and 2,200 feet in length, have been driven through massive sandstone and shale, and an intake cut, 500 ft. in length, 200 feet in width and 200 feet in depth, has also been excavated in rock.

During 2007 and 2008, the project Optimal Fragmentation in Blasting II was conducted at the Långåsen quarry of NCC Roads AB near Arlanda. The main goals were:an evaluation of the effect of using electronic delay detonators (EDDs) in quarry blastinga validation of the design curve concept introduced at the Vändle quarry.Five production blasts were monitored. After a first trial round, the remaining four rounds each had about 100 Ø89 mm holes in a 14–19 m high bench charged with site mixed emulsions. In rounds 1 and 2, a tighter pattern than normal was used in one half of the rounds, raising the specific charge there from 0.7 to 1.0 kg/m3. Non-electric initiation was used with two holes per 25 ms delay in-row and 67 ms between rows. In rounds 3 and 4, electronic delay detonators were used instead, with 10 and 5 ms in-row delays respectively.The monitoring encompassed drill hole collaring and alignment, in-hole deviations, the rock structure in the bench faces from 3D imaging, first row burdens, etc. Eleven 400 t samples were taken from the muck piles and sorted in the quarry and sieved in the laboratory (lab). The lab data made up a fines tail that was grafted onto the in-pit sorting data to form sieving curves for the test piles. These curves were then compensated for the absence of boulders to construct the sieving curves for the blasted muck pile.These have been used to derive fragmentation model formulas for the non-electric rounds, also called design formulas. They are based on blast geometry, charging data and the properties of the rock mass. The formulas may be used to estimate the effect of changing blasthole pattern, borehole diameter and stemming length for example.The use of EDDs gave several unexpected results. In comparison with non-electric initiated rounds with a somewhat lower specific charge the fragmentation was much coarser; x50 increased from 160 to 200 mm. The effect of raising the specific charge in the non-electric initiated rounds from 0.72 to 0.99 kg/m3 was a much finer fragmentation; x50 decreased from 160 to 120 mm.CITATION:Ouchterlony, F, Nyberg, U, Olsson, M, Widenberg, K and Svedensten, P, 2015. As mining develops into deeper and hotter regions, the safety and health of miners require that the workspace be cooled. Toward this end, this program has successfully developed a high performance, low maintenance spray cooler of 5000 cfm nominal capacity. Further, a series of four 25,000 cfm, nominal capacity, spray coolers has been built and mine tested with satisfactory results. The smaller coolers have been patented and become commercialized with 50 units currently in service. The concept has been developed independently overseas with an unknown number of units in operation.

Introduction It is generally conceded by flotation men that the condition at the surface of a particle of mineral or gangue is the most important factor controlling its behaviour in a flotation cell. Much research work has been devoted to the study of the forces that are active at the surface of the particle and of the effect of the surrounding solution upon these forces. Study of the relationship between mineral or gangue particles and gas bubbles indicates that, in the main at least, flotation is a physical phenomenon. The important factor, that of mineral-gas-bubble attachment, is unquestionably physical; however, modifications may be effected by chemical means, whereby the nature either of the surface of the particle or of the surrounding solution may be changed. For example, the coating of lead sulphide that forms on lead-carbonate ore particles when sodium sulphide is added greatly aids the flotation of the carbonate particles. Without going into the question as to why, under certain surface conditions, mineral particles will attach themselves to gas bubbles whereas under other conditions they will remain unaffected, it may be stated that there are three general conditions in a flotation pulp which control the attachment of the particle and the gas bubble.

The Bureau of Mines has researched the utilization of mining and pro-cessing wastes as raw materials for the production of glass-ceramic pipe. Characterization of various wastes as to occurrence and chemical composition is reported. A computer program was developed and used to identify waste materials and mixes that would result in glass melts from which glass-ceramics could be produced after cooling and subsequent heat treatments. The production of abrasion-resistant pipe from inexpensive and readily available domestic resources could offer an economical substitute for high-alloy steels containing the critical and strategic materials cobalt and chromium.
