This report describes exhaust-emission data from 10 diesel engines: six 4-cycle, direct-injection, naturally aspirated engines; two 4-cycle, direct-injection, turbocharged engines; one 4-cycle, precombustion-chamber, turbo-charged engine; and one 2-cycle, direct-injection engine. These engines were tested over a 3-year period (1968-70). Lowest emissions were obtained with a precombustion-chamber engine. Emissions from the 2-cycle, direct-injection engine fell within the range of emission rates for the 4-cycle, naturally aspirated, direct-injection engines. Excluding the precombustion-chamber engine and excepting one of the 4-cycle, naturally aspirated engines, carbon monoxide emission rates were about the same for all engines tested. Test data on smoke, odor, and emissions of hydrocarbons, oxides of nitro-gen, carbon monoxide, and aldehydes are given.

Gentlemen : My object reads "Longwall Rapid Advance of Coal Mining in the Federal Republic of Germany". It is true that the percentage of coal obtained in your country from longwall faces, with at present 1.2, is still rather low, but it increased considerably since 1966 with 0.4 %. The coal mines of the Federal Republic of Germany ever used longwall as the classical method of coal getting. All attempts to introduce bord and pillar mining did not lead to any wider application of this method. The principal reasons, for this appear to have been: - the deeper depth of our workings, - the wish to keep working losses as low as possible and to utilize the deposits opened up by deep and therefore expensive shafts to the furthest possible degree, - the dense sequence of seams and the mutual influencing of the working points, - the high number of disturbances in the geologically much stressed deposits, - and the necessary considerations to the protection of the densely built-upon surface.

Most publicity about the copper industry nowadays is focused on the adequacy of ore reserves and on excessive mining capacity. These concerns, stemming from public awareness of actual and potential shortages and oversupplies, relate to production rather than consumption. Perhaps the reason for this one-sided view is that copper is thought of as a commodity which is conspicuously traded in world markets, rather than as one of many industrial materials that serve today's rapidly changing technology. Copper differs from other widely traded commodities in that its real cost of production has progressively increased since World War 11. The reasons for the increase are identifiable by analyzing operations in one of the world's large producing centres, the copper province of Arizona. Another respect in which copper differs from some other commodities is that increases in demand occur less automatically in the case of copper than they tend to in commodities whose consumption is more directly related to population growth. The copper industry's current inability to generate and attract needed investment capital is attributable to these differences between copper and other commodities; it suggests that the concept of copper purely as a commodity is outdated. The key to the problem is better integration between the activities of copper producers and users. Depending on circumstances, integration takes various forms- for example, investment tied to long-term sales con- tracts between producers in developing countries and consumers overseas; common ownership of producing and manufacturing facilities in industrialized nations like the U.S.; and consumer-oriented research and marketing by the copper producers.

Without insulation we could not survive on this planet. This may sound like a self-serving statement but it is a fact. The blanket of air which surrounds us is a very effective insulating blanket, allowing some shortwave solar radiation to warm us during the day while retaining the longer infrared radiation at night. Our life on earth is very much dependent on materials performing an insulating function without being thought of as insulation, clothing, fur, window glass, the ice of an igloo etc. The mechanisms of heat transfer involved in these materials are analogous to those involved in engineered insulations - Engineered insulations are designed for maximum effectiveness for given conditions within the applicable retraints. Engineered insulations are very effective! As an illustration let us consider this graph (Figure 1). It represents: 1. The radiative heat transfer between two 1 foot2 (0.0932) radiantly black surfaces, one at 100F (38C) and the other at the temperature indicated on the bottom scale. This does not include the convective and conductive heat flow of the air, both of which are significant but small in comparison. 2. The heat transfer resulting from the placement of 1 inch (25.4 mm) of insulation [10 pcf (160 kg/m3) ceramic fiber] between these two plates.

THE Dawson coal-mines are owned and operated by the Stag Canon Fuel Co., of which Dr. James Douglas is President and E. L. Carpenter general manager. The property is situated in Colfax county, N. M., and the openings now in operation are in townships 28 and 29 N. R. 20 E., and township 28 N. R. 21 E., shown in Fig. 1. The mines are part of the southern end of the Raton coal-field, which extends north into Colorado and embraces many coal-camps of the Trinidad section. II. GEOLOGY. Geologically, the coal-measures, commonly known as the Laranmie series of the Cretaceous system, have a thickness of about 800 ft. in the vicinity of Dawson. The coal makes an excellent coke, and, according to some authorities, its coking properties are clue to the action of intruded sheets and sills of igneous rock, the sheets occasionally thickening into masses resembling laccoliths, at such places making nearer approach to the coal and sometimes producing small areas of natural coke. There are but few dikes through¬out the entire southern portion of the field and little or no faulting along the dikes. In some parts of this great coal-field the intrusive sheets are far removed in the green shales below the coal-measures, and are so much altered as to be difficult of identification. There is but little disturbance of the strata through¬out the Raton coal-field in as far as it extends into New Mexico. BEFORE describing the experience with the Chinese on the Rand and the work they have accomplished, it will be necessary, sary, first, to give a brief account of labor-conditions in the Transvaal since the war, and then to show how the necessity of importation of labor arose. As is well known, the Transvaal mines are run on the dual system of labor-that is, the rough work is done by colored laborers under the superintendence of white men. From the start of mining operations in South Africa there has been the cry of shortness of native labor, due in great measure to the failure of Kaffirs to work continuously in the mines. While he works, the Kaffir is a satisfactory laborer, but his period of service is short, averaging about nine months. People unacquainted with the Kaffir have maintained that, by offering a higher wage and better accommodation, better results would be obtained from the native workers, but an increased wage simply aggravates the trouble. The Kaffir's wants are few. While at work he spends little of his money, and before long has sufficient capital with which to buy wives and become a gentleman of leisure. Doubling the wage of the Kaffir means that he acquires a competency in half the time, so that his period of service is correspondingly reduced. In 1899, before the war, there was always a cry about the scarcity of Kaffir labor. The highest number of natives at work was in July and August, 1899, when nearly 100,000 were employed. At the outbreak of hostilities the Kaffirs were scattered far and near, many doing well during the war by working for the military authorities. FOR the first time in 1938, bituminous coal production for the week ending Nov. 19 surpassed that of the corresponding week in 1937, and indexes of industrial activity indicated the possibility that the remaining weeks of 1938 would run ahead of the corresponding weeks of the preceding year. But regardless of this year-end pickup, total production in 1938 was approximately 25 per cent less than in 1937. The estimate of 340 million tons for 1938 places the bituminous industry slightly above the production level of 1933 and approximately 10 per cent above the modem low of 1932. Anthracite production is not subject to the same extent as is bituminous coal to fluctuations arising out of the rate of industrial activity, hence the decline from 1937 has not been so great being approximately 14 per cent under 1937. The estimate for 1938 production is approximately 45 million tons, but this represents the lowest level reached in the last fifty years with the possible exception of several strike years.

ARRANGEMENTS for the Annual Meeting of the Institute were well advanced at the end of December as the following program will show. Heretofore this has been printed separately, but its inclusion in the Annual Review issue of MINING AND METALLURGY will, it is hoped, make it more easily available for reference until the final program is issued, which will be distributed at the meeting. Added details will appear in the February issue. Last year's meeting drew a record crowd of over 2300 which should be exceeded this year. Early reservations at the headquarters hotel, the Waldorf-Astoria, or any other convenient hotel are desirable, as are prompt reservations for the Annual Dinner. No one need worry about too much speechmaking this year, for the honors will be awarded and accepted in a few words instead of a few paragraphs, in seconds rather than minutes.

I. INTRODUCTION. THESE impurities are perhaps the most important things in steel-especially steel made by the oxidation processes-the effect of which has not been at least approximately determined. By oxidation processes I mean the Bessemer and Siemens-Martin, during which the metalloids in the charge are removed by oxidation. It has been truly said that it is a clear advantage to have a new name for a new thing. To secure this and to economize space, let us adopt the name sonim (plural sonims) to designate the solid non-metallic impurities existing in steel or other metal. I would define a sonim as a solid non-metallic portion of matter existing as an impurity in metal. A piece of sand, brick, clay, or such material, imbedded in metal, would be considered as a foreign body, not as an impurity, and therefore not a sonim. The studies of sonims of which the results have been published hitherto, have been made chiefly or wholly on finished or at least on cold steel, without much, if any, regard to the specific methods by which the steel was made. While many of the results so obtained are valuable, they give little help in determining the cause, effect, or cure of the disease. It is not enough, in such a study, to know merely the commercial name of the process; for within the field of each process lies a great number of possible variations, each of which will yield a result differing in some respect from all others; and the control of sonims is particularly dependent. on the metallurgical treatment of the metal, because of the inability of analytical chemistry to throw much light on their presence, condition, and effect, as they usually occur in commercial steels. The microscope aids more, perhaps, than chemistry in their study.

M Y DUTIES, as a member of the Department of Franco-American War Cooperation of the French High Commission were to study the copper and brass industries of America from the mining of the various non-ferrous metals to the semi-finished, or finished materials. In the pursuit of these studies, it was my privilege to visit a number of industries and organizations in different parts of the country. I first visited most of the Eastern copper refineries that were supplying the Allies with vast amounts of metal. These works are producing their material by the multiple or the series process, although the first method predominates. But, regardless of the process employed all the plants attain an exceptionally high standard of quality in their production. One of the points that particularly attracted attention was the manner in which improvements could be traced from the older worlds to the more recent ones. The impression was that, thanks to a spirit of broad-minded cooperation between the principals of the companies and frequent exchanges of views between members of the staffs, all persons interested benefitted by the experience thus gained, to the advantage of the community at large.

Growing global concern over the impacts of climate change, attributable largely to fossil fuel energy sources, has led to the widely shared goal for a ‘just transition’ to cleaner energy and reduced dependence on carbon-based fuels. As the world’s 14th biggest CO2 emitter and being particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, South Africa must embark on a just transition pathway. This paper reviews expected coal mine closures and associated community vulnerabilities and local governance challenges in South Africa. Decommissioning schedules for all coal-fired power stations and operating coal mines are plotted, and 69 mining host communities and 21 municipalities are mapped, classified, and described. Community socio-economic profiles are measured using a set of SDG indicators and census data and municipalities assessed through financial audits. Our research shows that five coal-fired power plants (8.9 GW) and 15 coal mines (29.5 Mt/a) will probably close by 2030, and a further four plants (14 GW) and 23 mines (106 Mt/a) by 2040. Thus, the shift to cleaner energy will likely occur without the premature closures implied by the just transition. The impact of mine closure on the 2.5 million residents of host communities will be significant, particularly as levels of income, employment, and education are already very low and many municipalities are in financial distress. The South African approach to the just transition needs to take local realities into account and the narrative must support an effective transition that does not undermine energy security and economic growth.

ABSTRACT Solvent extraction is used in many acid leach uranium circuits to upgrade and purify the uranium-bearing solution prior to final product precipitation. A number of strip options are available to recover the uranium from the loaded organic. This paper compares seven of these options on the basis of typical capital and operating costs for the solvent extraction circuit and downstream uranium processing and also considers other related issues. The aim is to provide an objective comparative assessment of these options that could be used as a qualitative guide in process selection or improvement.

This paper describes a collaborative project undertaken by Newcrest Mining Limited (Newcrest) and pitt&sherry to identify, develop and then implement global best practices to manage the exposure to inrush (dry and mud) hazards in underground mining operations. An extensive literature review was undertaken to identify past experience globally and the current state of knowledge and practice in managing inrush hazard. A key requirement of the literature review was the development of a list of guiding questions which would form a framework for approaching operators to discuss the topic, capture recent learnings and understand current operating practices to allow the development of a best practice solution. An initial cohort of 14 mines across four continents chose to contribute and detailed interviews were carried out by the project team. The outcome from the literature review, interviews with participating mines and various internal discussions was a comprehensive summary document detailing Basic versus Best Practice management of the inrush hazard. This document is being used as a gap analysis tool by Newcrest to assess and guide the management of inrush hazard at their existing and future operations. The summary document has also been provided to the participating mines for their consideration. The project is iterative and will continue to evolve as new experiences, knowledge and practices come to light.

GEORGIUS AGRICOLA was not only the author of works on Mining and allied subjects, usually asso ciated with his name, but he also interested himself to some extent in political and religious subjects. For convenience in discussion we may, therefore, divide his writings on the broad lines of (1) works on mining, geology, mineralogy, and allied subjects; (2) works on other subjects, medical, religious, critical, political, and historical. In respect especially to the first division, and partially with regard to the others, we find three principal cases : (a) Works which can be authenticated in European libraries today ; (b) references to editions of these in bibliographies, catalogues, etc., which we have been unable to authenticate ; and (c) references to works either unpublished or lost. Electronic detonators have been commercially available to the mining industry worldwide for over ten years. It is estimated that total cumulative global sales will have reached 25 million units by the time of the Conference in February 2004. This is below 0.2% of all detonator types sold during this period. Perhaps 20 million will have been used underground in South African gold, diamond and platinum mines. These will have been produced by South African companies, in South Africa for South African customers. Here efforts have met with greater success and in 2003 fully 5 million, or 3% of local detonators sold, could be of an electronic type. However, it is estimated that about US$7.00 (R50.00) has been expended on R & D, manufacturing facilities and marketing, for each unit so far sold. Large sums of money continue to be spent. Despite the apparent success in South Africa, is it justified? Electronic initiation systems have not produced significant technical benefits to the end-user underground nor corporate profits to the supplier. Some doubt they ever will (even from the large surface operations where the price per unit is much higher). A conclusion might be that they have failed. In 1998 Smit and Pistorius wrote a paper titled “Implications of the Dominant Design in Electronic Initiation Systems in the South African Mining Industry”. This ISEE paper seeks to summarise and review the conclusions of the earlier work. These were: that a dominant design had not yet emerged; the type of connector and the way in which detonators are connected and programmed would be a strong determinant influencing the development of a “winning” product; technical aspects rarely solely determine which becomes the dominant design (marketing, social and economic factors often have a strong influence); electronic initiation systems were an emerging technology for the underground gold mining industry in South Africa and because it was under severe cost pressure the mines would look to them to raise productivity and hence profits; finally, as a dominant design begins to emerge, one could expect a number of players to exit from the industry.

Since the days of Adam Smith and Milton Friedman the discussion of corporate citizenship and sustainability has been flooded with multiple contradictions, with proponents of sustainability saying that it is a crucial cog in the business strategy, while those against, maintain that æthe business of business is businessÆ and therefore sustainability issues are just add-ons. Sustainability arises from a deeply held vision by corporate leaders that businesses can and should play a role beyond just making money. Businesses should embrace the understanding that everything that a company does has an impact both internally and externally (communities, employees and customers), and the natural environment. This paper highlights the approach that led to a view that there is a contradiction between profitability, sustainability and community development, and we provide a further argument to the contrary. This argument is based on a comprehensive literature review of over three decades by various scholars linking corporate social performance and corporate financial performance. Driefontein Gold MineÆs approach is that of linking the community development, natural environmental and employee well-being initiatives and projects to the mineÆs business strategy. The paper further highlights the coordination and implementation mechanism of sustainability at the mine where the accountability lies with the head of the mine operations. A two pronged approach is employed where there is an internal dialogue on sustainability between the various departments coordinated by the sustainable development department and an external tri-sector partnership with local government, interested and affected parties and the mine. These approaches are closely linked to the contributions towards the mineÆs financial bottom line.

The Morning Star diorite dyke has been subjected to two periods of mineralization. The earlier, genetically related to the dyke magma, gave rise to a weak chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-pentlandite-gold mineralization in a narrow zone, up to 25 cm. wide, which parallelsthe nearby western (hanging) wall of the dyke. Subsequently a set of conjugate shears formed in the dyke as a result of tectonic movements. Gold-quartz veins formed in these shears giving rise to the classical "ladder veins" of the Morning Star mine. On either side of the veins ("floors") the diorite has been bleached for up to 3 ft. This involved introduction of much CO. and some K"O, and S with abstraction of SiO. and FeO, giving rise to carbonates, sericite, zoisite and pyrite. The veins consist of quartz with minor amounts of albite and carbonate, together with pyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, tetrahedrite, galena, bournonite, boulangerite and gold. Spectrographic analyses of gold show that the suite of trace elements is consistent throughout the mine.INTRODUCTIONThe gold-quartz veins of the Morning Star Gold Mine, at Wood's Point, Victoria, are a classic example of the "ladder vein" type of deposit. The structure of this series of repeating quartz veins or "floors", some barren and some productive, occurring in a set of conjugate shears which transect a "dyke bulge" of diorite (Fig. 1), has been described on numerous occasions as mining has progressed and figures in the textbooks (Whitelaw, 1905; 1916; Junner, 1920; Lindgren, 1933; McKinstry, 1935; 1942; 1949; Kenny, 1949; Hills, 1952; Clappison, 1953) ; but there has been no study of the mineralization apart from that in Junner's (1920) general study of the Walhalla-Wood's Point Goldfield, made at a time when mining had not developed below the 400 ft. level,. and the mine was dormant.

THE paper is principally eoncerncd with experimental work carried out the author whilst a number of the metallurgical staff at the Cockle Creek works. The metallurgical has been discussed sufficiently for the reader to follow the course of the experiments but the actual plant has only been described in so far as it effected metallurgical treatment, since the arrangement of such a smelter is a matter of common knowledge.The lead-roasting plant consisted of Godfrey roaster, Dwight-Lloyd maehines and Huntingdon-Heberlein pots. The usual treatment was in the Godfrey furnaces, followed by sintering in the Huntingdon- Heberlein pots. The paper is divided into two parts in the Godfrey furnaces and Huntingdon-Heberlein pots.
