"The theoretical melting energy requirement for a typical hypoeutectic aluminum-silicon alloy is approximately 520 BTU/lb. It has been demonstrated, however, that even a state of the art secondary processing-automated lost foam casting operation can exceed this value by at least an order of magnitude when the actual thermal energy input from melting to solidification is monitored. Metal transfer and holding operations constitutes over 65% of this expenditure. The authors present relative benchmark energy expenditure information by unit operation for an offsite melting/lost foam casting line with a daily throughput in excess of 100,000 lbs. Efficiency improvements through optimization of the current process, and anticipated energy values at the culmination of a U.S. Department of Energy sponsored project to develop, integrate and demonstrate an advanced melting, transportation, and dispensation system will be cited.IntroductionThe size of the U.S. aluminum remelt pool was approximated to be 14.21 billion kg (31.27 billion pounds) by a recent study?, with the engineered castings (foundry) sector accounting for 3.25 billion kg (7.16 billion pounds) or 23% of that total. This study considered overall process yield and all major contributors to scrap. The values cited, therefore, are more meaningful than simply tabulating annual pounds shipped by sector.The foundry sector consists of Sand Castings, PM Castings and Die Castings categories appearing in Figure 1. All other categories comprise the wrought alloy sector. Wrought alloy production enjoys an energetic benefit from both scale and a relatively continuous operation. Many foundry operations, however, operate in batch mode at less than design metal throughput with characteristically longer melt holding periods. Since any detention of molten metal beyond melting represents an overhead use of energy, melt holding (secondary) energy expenditures can appreciably inflate melting energy requirements in the foundry."

Scope of the Courier 300 System The fact that reliable on-stream analysis is a prerequisite for effective flotation control is hardly disputed today. Nevertheless, up to now no system has been available that includes all the equipment necessary for successful analysis. However essential an on-stream analyser is in itself, reliable and accurate assaying can only be assured after techniques for sampling, handling the slurries and computing the X-ray data have been developed for the purpose. The Outokumpu Company's Courier 300 System is a complete package that can be installed and handed over with the key. It includes the equipment needed for sampling and handling the slurries. It has been developed from the start to meet industrial demands. Obviously an on-line system must comply with far stricter standards than one designed for a laboratory. Assays are computed by an Outokumpu 316 digital data processor, which is an integral part of the system and controls its entire performance. The computer software is programmed as a standard package, including a highly advanced new model for assay computation. Analysis output is available for a process computer, report typewriter:, and recorders. The package also includes calibration for slurry assays at our pilot installation before delivery. A complete Courier System can analyse up to 4Z slurries and six elements in each slurry. Thanks to its modular design, it can be dimensioned initially to the customer's requirements and is easy to expand later at low cost. Being a mining company itself, Outokumpu has been able to utilize its own long experience in non-ferrous metallurgy - an important factor contributing to the success of the Courier system. The advent of new methods of roasting, “flash roasting and fluidisation”, which are now under development, combined with the use of oxygen-enriched air, may markedly increase the SO2 content of roaster smokes. Skogmo suggests that the production of smokes containing as much as 50 per cent SO2 should be feasible. The use of flash smelting processes may well enable a similar increase in the SO2 content of smelter smokes to be made. In this event the recovery of sulphur would be greatly cheapened and the process might well be much more economic, even if allowance is made for the cost of generating the oxygen

In research conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, platinum-group metal (PGM) flotation concentrate from the Stillwater Complex, MT, was subjected to biooxidation using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in an effort to break down the sulfide minerals and liberate the associated PGM's for subsequent chemical leaching. Bacterial preleaching oxidized up to 94 pct of the sulfide present, destroyed the PGM-bearing pentlandite [(Ni,Fe)9S8] mineralization, and dissolved most of the nickel in the concentrate. Cyanidation at 80° C proved to be the most attractive chemical leachant, removing 34 pct of the platinum, 76 pct of the palladium, 94 pct of the rhodium, and 97 pct of the gold from the biooxidized concentrate. Research also indicated that increased sulfide oxidation during the preleach phase led to improved PGM recovery in the subsequent chemical leaching phase.

THE object of this paper is to present a brief survey of the work done and the results obtained in controlling dust at the Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines milling plant. The plant includes all primary and secondary crushing, grinding, and treatment operations. "Tetrandrine is a bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloid which has been shown to exhibit antifibrotic activity against silicosis. Tetrandrine is characterized by its strong binding to alveolar macrophages and inhibition of particle-induced respiratory burst activity in these phagocytes. In contrast, tubocurine and tubocurarine are structurally similar to tetrandrine but exhibit little effect on fibrosis or activation of alveolar macrophages. The objective of the present study was to test the effect of tetrandrine on macrophage production of monokines in response to occupational dusts, and to determine tetrandrine's effect on monokine-medicated cell growth using a mouse thymocyte proliferation assay and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) as a positive control. Stimulation of alveolar macrophages by respirable silica dust resulted in a release of monokines which caused a fourfold increase in thymocyte proliferation. Coal dust, on the other hand, had no effect on macrophage production of this cytokine. Tetrandrine was found to exhibit a dose-dependent inhibition of monokine release from both silica and LPS-stimulated alveolar macrophages. In experiments where thymocytes were directly treated with tetrandrine, a dose-dependent inhibition of thymocyte proliferation was noted with both interleukin-1- (IL-1) specific and nonspecific mitogenic (concanavalin A) actions. In contrast to the inhibitory potency of tetrandrine, tubocurarine was found to have no effect on either the production of monokines by LPS-stimulated alveolar macrophages or IL-I-mediated thymocyte proliferation. These results provide a correlation between the ant:fibrotic effect of tetrandrine and inhibition of macrophage activation. INTRODUCTIONThe pathogenesis of chronic pulmonary fibrosis caused by inhalation of occupational dusts has been associated with abnormal activation of alveolar macrophages such as the release of various cytokines capable of inducing fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis. These macrophage-derived cytokines include interleukin-1 (IL-1), tumor necrosis factor (TNF), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-B (TGF-(B), macrophage derived growth factor (MDGF), and interferon [1, 2].Interleukin-1 is a major macrophage-derived cytokine that has been shown to exhibit multiple biological effects on a variety of target cells. It is known to cause leukocyte [3, 4] and endothelial cell activation [5, 6], and to affect the synthesis and maintenance of the extracellular matrix by stimulation of fibroblast proliferation [7-9], synthesis of collagens [10] and gluco-saminoglycans [11], and prostaglandin E2 production [12]. In addition, IL-1 plays an important role in the initiation of an immune response through its direct activation of lymphocytes and stimulation of the production of other cytokines, such as interferons and hemopoietic colony-stimulating factors, needed for the expression of an immune response [13]. As a major cytokine in the immune-inflammatory sequela, IL-1 is also produced by epidermal, epithelial, lymphoid, and vascular tissues after infection, injury, or antigenic challenge [14]. Agents such as lipopolysaccharide (LPS), phorbol myristate acetate (PMA), immune complexes, and particulates are known to activate the synthesis and release of IL-1 by monocytes and macrophages [15]. These substances also trigger intracellular signals leading to altered arachidonic acid metabolism. Although the mechanism is still not clear, prostaglandins have been shown to suppress IL-1 translation via the induction of cyclic adenosine-monophosphate (CAMP), whereas leukotrienes produce a positive signal for IL-1 production [13]."

Waste rock extracted from a mine is typically stored nearby on the surface. Such waste rock piles must be designed to ensure their geotechnical and geochemical stability during the mine operation and after closure. The optimal construction of a pile requires detailed planning. Deposition should involve benches of limited height to control the global slope angle, based on the long term factor of safety. It can also be advantageous to compact the top of each bench and to give the surface an outward inclination to control water flow by limiting infiltration and favoring lateral diversion. When part of the waste rock contains reactive minerals, it is also deemed necessary to use selective placement with the non-reactive portion to prevent direct exposure to natural conditions. The construction must be well documented, and include data from the monitoring program. These and related aspects are presented and discussed in the paper.

"Phase separation is a frequently occurring phenomenon during solidification accompanied by melt convection, sedimentation or, in the case of two unmixable liquids, a Marangoni driven motion. In order to describe these phase separation phenomena a two-phase volume-averaging model was employed for globular equiaxed solidification of binary alloys and decomposition and solidification of hypermonotectic alloys. The model considers nucleation and growth of equiaxed grains or second phase droplets, motion and sedimentation of grains or droplets, feeding flow and solute transport by diffusion and convection. It allows the prediction of macro segregations and the distributions of grain size or droplet size. Evaluations were made by comparing the numerical predictions with experimental results. For example it is shown that the numerically predicted grain size distribution in a plate casting (Al-4wt%Cu) agrees reasonably well with the experimental analyses.IntroductionModeling of metallurgical processes is a rapidly expanding field and the research activities in the last decades cover a wide range of areas including melt pre-treatment, solidification and subsequent manufacturing routes. Among those activities solidification stands in the central position, because the primary structure of the materials, and even many defects such as porosity, (macro or micro) segregation and inclusions form during solidification. Those primarily formed structures or defects once existing are difficult to be removed or modified by the subsequent material processing.Solidification is a multi-disciplinary field involving thermodynamics, fluid dynamics and solid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, and other disciplinesr1 -31• One of the most challenging problems in solidification modeling is the complex interactions between physical phenomena occurring on different length scales ranging from atomic rearrangement over single crystal-melt interactions to heat extraction, momentum and species transport at the system level. Modeling an industry process on atomic scale is umealistic, even on grain scale (e.g. phase field method) it would need another 40 years to be able to model the exact grain morphology in a casting space envelope of 10x10x10 cm3 [ 4]. Therefore, the realistic models for industry process are based on the solution of the macro transport equations (mass, momentum, enthalpy and species) on system scale. The microscopic phenomena such as thermodynamics, nucleation law, crystal growth kinetics and interactions at the liquid-solid interface are considered with simplified models, which are coupled with the macroscopic transport equations."

Regulations on the emission of particulates from sinter plant stacks are becoming increasingly stringent and reducing these emissions by improving gas cleaning systems is a significant cost to the sinter plants. This paper describes an investigation into the emission of particulate matter from an iron ore sinter bed during the sintering of a Japanese Steel Mill (JSM) style ore blend in a 300 mm diameter pot grate test facility. Several techniques were trialled to determine a reliable method to sample the quantity of dust emitted and determine the mechanism of dust emission from the sinter bed. The nature of the dust was also examined using chemical and size analysis as well as optical and scanning electron microscopy. The paper discusses the techniques used to carry out the program as well as results on dust loading measured during sintering and the nature of the dust captured.

The per capita energy consumption in India is 510kgoe/year, the global average being nearly 1818kgoe/year. Correspondingly low is the per capita CO2 emission at 1.25t against the world average of 4.39t.65-70%, at times more, of India?s power generation from about 190,000 MW installed capacity, is however coal fired.India therefore has to secure diversified sources of energy and solar power is increasingly being looked as the real alternative to the existing over dependence on coal. To ensure sustainable solar power it is essential to secure its raw material base that is ?silica?, hitherto considered as ?minor minerals?. That calls for immediately addressing the issues of land availability, solar power cost, developing a dynamic inventory of silica containing minerals, appropriate processing technology and strong regulatory framework for sustainable mining and processing of all silica rich minerals. "Electromagnetic processing of materials is newly proposed to be considered as one of the engineering fields where functions of electromagnetism are utilized for processing electrically conducting materials, such as liquid metals, electrolytes and plasmas. The background requiring this processing and the engineering characteristics supporting it are described. The applicable functions of electromagnetism to material processing are revealed from the view point of magnetohydrodynamics. The existing processes and the proposed ones are classified into utilized functions and engineering applications are discussed. IntroductionElectric energy has been used in the metallurgical field for the processes of melting, refining and solidification. In these cases both the magnetic field which is induced by an imposed electric current, and the electric current are applied on electrically conducting materials such as molten metals. Thus, it turns out that the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) phenomena have unconsciously been seen in metallurgical processes using electric current. The academic backbone studying MHD phenomena is the Magnetohydrodynamics which is being developed in the fields of plasma physics, astrophysics, fusion research and nuclear energy.The first attempt where magnetohydrodynamics was intentionally applied on metallurgy was a Symposium of IUTAM (The International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics) in titled as ""Metallurgical Applications of Magnetohydrodynamics"" at Cambridge, UK, 1982 [1]. This timely event stimulated a few metallurgists to recognize the importance of ~MHD and was a good warning to the metal societies in the world. Especially in Japan, the Steelmaking Investigative Subcommittee of Research Planning Committee in the ISIJ (The Iron and Steel Institute of Japan) discussed the application of ~IHD to metallurgy and selected it as one of the four major innovative subjects for future steelmaking technology in Japan [2]. Indeed, the term of ""Electromagnetic Metallurgy"" itself was firstly coined by this subcommittee. Upon the request of a report from the subcommittee, the ISIJ has established a committee on ""Electromagnetic Metallurgy"" at 1985, under the author's chairmanship."

An atmospheric ammoniacal thiosulphate leach system was developed to recover gold and silver from residues of the ammoniacal oxidation leaching of sulphidic copper concentrates. Extractions of 88 - 95% Au and 83 - 98% Ag were attained within 2 to 4 hours at 40 - 60°C in thiosulphate leaching of the oxidation leach residues of Manitoba chalcopyrite concentrates analyzing 24.6% Cu, 0.18 oz/ton Au and 4.26 oz/ton Ag and a complex British Columbia chalcopyrite/tetrahedrite concentrate analyzing 18.5% Cu, 0.27 oz/ton Au and 276 oz/ton Ag. Parameters affecting the Au and Ag solubilization included thiosulphate, ammonia, and cupric ion concentrations, temperature, retention time and the degree of Cu extraction and sulphide oxidation in the primary oxidation leach. The precious metals were recovered from the thiosulphate liquors by zinc dust cementation.

Condensates produced by SiO(g) and CO(g) have a crucial importance in silicon production. Condensation will follow the reactions 3 SiOðgÞ+COðgÞ→ 2 SiO2 + SiC and 2 SiO ðgÞ→Si+SiO2. Solid compounds generated during silicon production contain Si, SiO2 and SiC in different microstructures and amounts. In industrial systems, condensates limit the SiO(g) escape to the off-gas system. On the other hand, they can block the gas flowing from the high temperature zone, hence the necessity of studying an optimized condensation process. This review discusses SiO(g) condensation and its interaction with CO(g). The report gives an overview of the condensates found both at laboratory and at industrial scale. The two main compounds are the Si–SiO2 and the SiOx–SiC mixtures. The hypothesis on the mechanism of formation of SiC–SiOx condensates is presented through a wide selection of performed works. The advantages and disadvantages of the former experimental procedures are discussed.

The concept of adsorption or separation of platinum anions from base metal cations in chloride media using native or chemically modified activated carbons has been discussed in various journals within the context of batchwise systems. In our research work, a fixed-bed column, loaded with native and amine-immobilized activated carbon pellets (Norit RO 0.8), was used to study selective adsorption of platinum ions from chloride media at different flow rates, bed depth and initial metal concentrations. The kinetics, mass transfer characteristics, breakthrough data and separation factors (ß(Pt/Fe) and ß(Pt/Cr)) were quantitatively analysed and modeled. The bed-depth service time (BDST) model was used to model the breakthrough curves successfully in fixed-bed columns and also the dispersive diffusion in the radial and axial directions of the bed were evaluated. The inner diameter of the column was 3 cm and the bed depth was between 1.0 cm and 2.5 cm. Concentrated 4 M HCl acid solution was used to elute the fixed-bed column. It was demonstrated that amine-treated activated carbons provides superior separation factors between platinum and base metals (Fe, Cr). Results showed also, that 95% saturation was reached within 10~26 hours depending on the nature of ACs at a flow rate of 11 mL/min and initial concentration of 5 ppm.

Mining projects are capital-intensive and are also characterized by high technical and economic risks. These factors pose challenges to mining entrepreneurs when they seek to raise seed capital for mining start-ups. There are limited sources of mining investment funds in South Africa and each has shortcomings due to one reason or another. Another impediment is South Africa?s status as a developing economy, in which the standards of living ? which in turn influences the savings culture ? the limited GDPs and budget, the socio-political environment, and banking, mining, treasury and other regulations, determine the size of investments, particularly in mining ventures. The proposed funding mechanism was developed with the aim of filling the gaps identified in existing funding mechanisms that were developed by the government with the introduction of the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA), 2002. The shortcomings identified were presented to the study participants as questions to obtain views that were used to define innovative ways of raising mining start-up capital. Most participants in the study supported the derived hypotheses and proposals, and these were used to refine the proposed mechanism for mining investment in South Africa. The proposed funding framework is aimed at encouraging interaction between mining entrepreneurs, government, and the investors to align goals and expectations when undertaking a mining investment.

WE have just heard a very able presentation, by Mr. J. C. Cameron, on the subject of Recent Trends in Labour Relations, as they exist today in Canada (l). With minor changes, what he said applies equally to the situation in the United States. Direct negotiation between employer and employee on a man-to-man basis, wherein good faith and mutual esteem was at least sometimes a factor, has almost entirely given way to a mass struggle in which each side is represented by highly trained specialists in a new jurisprudence, built up on vote-getting labour laws, decisions in analogous cases by Boards whose members may have had very little personal acquaintance with the specific case, etc., etc. Membership in a labour union has become almost an essential requisite to a job; once in, the individual workman loses his identity and dares not act on his own initiative or even express any idea not handed him by his Union head. An honest workman cannot turn in an honest day's work, because his Union will not allow him. Leadership in the Unions has become so powerful an instrument, both politically and monetarily, that Union policies are drafted primarily to build up that power, and may have little relation to the equities of the individual case. ?While both sides still render lip-service to the doctrine that Capital and Labour can advance best by co-operation to mutual benefit, that doctrine has in effect given way to as bitter and as legalistic a struggle as any in our civil courts. There are many reasons to believe that we are, industrially, in a situation much like the European situation from 1935 to 1939; an impending war to the death with 'appeasement' as the only, unavailing, policy

"Preliminary examination of tungsten deposits on the Mountain View property near Hyder, Alaska, was made by Neal M. Muir, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines daring the summer of 1942. Fifteen samples were cut, rough esti¬mates of ore reserves were made, and it was proposed to extend the drift on scheelite-bearing vein 300 feet in a northwesterly direction.From May 22 to October 24, 1944, an exploratory project was conducted on the property by the Bureau. In the course of this work, the camp buildings were rehabilitated; the dam, hydraulic line, and machinery were repaired; 226 feet of drift was driven; 80 groove samples aggregating 3.9 tons in weight were cut; a 6,000-foot surface and underground traverse was run; and the area was mapped in detail.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to the national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director.Special acknowledgment is doe Neal W. Muir, project engineer, and Robert S. Sanford, acting chief, Alaska Division, Mining Branch, for their supervision of the field work and revision of the report.Acknowledgment is also made to Silbak Premier, Ltd., for rendering valuable assistance in the repair of equipment and for extending various courtesies to Bureau of Mines personnel during the conduct of this project.The Mountain View property is located at latitude 55° 59' north, and longitude 130° 03' west in the Salmon River mining district of southeastern Alaska, about 5 miles in a northwesterly direction from the town of Hyder, which lies at the head of Portland Canal, as shown in figures 1 and 2. Vein outcrops and surface workings are at an elevation of 950 feet and occupy the west flank of a low ridge between Skookum and Fish Creeks, as shown in figure 3. The portal of the long adit exposing the vein at depth is on Skookum Creek about 550 feet north of the confluence of Skookum and Fish Creeks.Access to the property is over a 4-foot wide trail built and maintained by the United States Forest Service. This trail is suitable for pack animals and is adequate for transportation of supplies and material for exploratory work. During the periods of camp construction and past exploratory operations a 4,000-foot, single-cable, aerial tramway, now in disrepair, served for transportation of materials and all machinery from the Salmon River Highway to the property. The cost of such hauling was high, amounting to $12 a ton. Topography is suitable for construction of a ""cat road"" 2 miles in length, connecting the property with the Salmon River Highway. It is estimated that such a road could be built for $5,000 a mile, and supplies, machinery, and concentrates could be haled over it at a cost of less than $2.50 a ton."
