Chemical processes using coal often require economical removal of dust from high-temperature gases. Laboratory-scale investigations by the Federal Bureau of Mines have shown that an aluminum silicate fiber is suitable for filtering dust from gases at 1,800° F. The effects of the bulk density of the filter, rate of gas-flow, concentration of dust in the filter, fiber diameter, depth of filter, and concentration of dust in the feed gas on removal efficiency, pressure drop, and capacity of the filter to hold dust were studied. The laboratory filters were difficult to construct because the fibers were longer than the tube diameter. This caused irregular distribution of fiber that permitted dust-laden gases to leak through channels developed in the filter. Leaks also formed between the filter and the tube wall, but this was minimized by improved filter design. However, edge leaks and leaks through channels in the filter probably would be insignificant in properly constructed filters of industrial size. As the concentration of dust in the filter increased, the efficiency of the low-density filters decreased, contrary to expectations, probably because a higher percentage of the dust passed through channels that developed in the filter. The efficiency of high-density filters, however, increased with the concentration of dust in the filter. Results indicate that loosely packed filters would have a longer life than tightly packed filters at the expense of efficiency. As regeneration or replacement of stationary filters is difficult and expensive, loose filters would be best for filtering gases containing much dust. Gases containing little dust may be cleaned with tightly packed filters to obtain higher efficiency. For either type of filter, precleaning with cyclone separators or other means is advisable.

"In this study, H2SO4 and HCl leaching behaviour of an ore sample containing 1.87% of Ni, obtained from the Karaçam (Eskisehir-Turkey) lateritic deposit that started operation recently was investigated. Acid concentration, temperature and reaction time were investigated as variables by comparative leaching tests and the optimum leaching conditions were selected on teh basis of Ni, Fe, Co and Mg behaviour. For H2SO4 leaching, optimum leach parameters were 95°C, a 12 normal H2SO4 concentration and 90 minutes of reaction time, and under these conditions Ni and Fe dissolutions were 97.6% and 95.4% respectively. On the other hand, 70°C, an 8 normal HCl concentration and a reaction time of 90 minutes were found to be the optimum parameters for HCl leaching, and Ni and Fe dissolutions found were 97.1% and 97.8%, respectively.INTRODUCTION Today, nickel and various nickel compounds are obtained from sulphide and lateritic nickel ores (Moskalyk & Alfantazi, 2002). Even though about 72% of the world's nickel reserves constitute lateritic ores, only about 42% of nickel is produced from these ores. The decrease in production from sulphide deposits, on the other hand, and increases in the use of nickel in the iron and steel, and battery production sectors, and especially the production of nickel cast irons in recent years, have accelerated the importance of making use of lateritic deposits (Luo et. al., 2010; Chang et. al., 2010). In the beneficiation of sulphide nickel ores, mostly pyrometallurgical methods are used. On the other hand, about 39% of lateritic ores are beneficiated by pyrometallurgical, and 61% are beneficiated by hydrometallurgical methods (USGS, 2009). In laterite beneficiation, the ore properties are of significance; that is to say, limonitic ores are eneficiated by high pressure acid leaching or via the Caron process, nontronitic ores are beneficiated by high pressure acid leaching or heat treatment (smelting), and ores containing serpentine by pyrometallurgical methods (Berezowsky, 2004; McDonald & Whittington, 2008a; Dreisinger et. al., 2015)."

It is practically fifteen years since stellite was first introduced into industry, and since then the progress made in its manufacture has been so rapid and the number of successful applications so varied that it was considered a review of the more important phases would be of general interest. Stellite is a cobalt-chromium-tungsten alloy, containing approximately 2. 75 per cent carbon. The high percentage of carbon is necessary for the requisite hardness and resistance to wear at ordinary temperatures, whereas the tungsten is essential to impart hardness at a red heat. Chromium imparts hardness and strength, and cobalt renders the alloys more resistant to oxidation. The metals cobalt and chromium are completely soluble in all proportions, both in the liquid and solid state, the equilibrium diagram showing a minimum in the solubility curve at approximately 50 per cent cobalt and l,340°C. Cobalt and tungsten are completely soluble up to 40 per cent tungsten, which is beyond the limit of the; tungsten content of stellite alloys. In the presence of carbon, carbides are formed, which are essential in stellite possessing good cutting or wearing properties.

The mine of the Eureka Standard Consolidated dining Co. is at Dividend, Utah, in the Tintic mining district. It is operated under the same management and controlled by the Antic Standard Mining Co.; the two properties adjoin each other. The Eureka Standard is worked through a vertical shaft; the ore is mined by a stringer-set-and-fill method. One hundred and thirty men were employed in April 1933. The normal daily tonnage is 100 tons; the ore is shipped to the smelter at Garfield, Utah.

"Developing markets for western metallurgical coal have continued to stimulate considerable exploration activity in the Rocky Mountain foothills and to influence major segments of a wide-ranging carbonization R&D pro-gram. Adjunct studies have included expanded petrographie investigations.Coal preparation has• been principally directed toward utilization of prepared small coal and was, like much of the year's combustion work, strongly influenced by concern over atmospheric pollution. Particular attention has been given to desulphurization and to the suppression of pollutants in combustion systems.In the area of non-fuel utilization of coal, interest has centered on plant nutrients and on a series of coal-based carbons which, inter alia, possess utility as filtration media.Other projects included the development of improved sampling and analytical methods, investigations into the effect of storage on coal proper-ties and R&D in solids pipelining. "Development of a process for the treatment of a nickel copper matte rich in the minerals heazlewoodite, chalcocite and bornite has demonstrated significant base metal recoveries and metal separation efficiencies. The determination of chemical and mineralogical changes occurring in the individual leaching stages in laboratory experiments has enabled a better understanding of the complex leaching chemistry. The chemistry and mineralogy of the piloting and laboratory processes are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe nickel-copper sulfide ores of the South African Bushveld Complex are among the most important Platinum Group Metal (PGM) bearing ores, and contain the world’s largest reserves of platinum. The treatment used in the recovery of PGMs from these ores includes three types of processes, namely ore concentration using physical techniques such as flotation and gravity separation, concentration by pyrometallurgical means, hydrometallurgical extraction of the base metals followed by the PGMs. Following milling of the ore, flotation involves the separation of high value minerals from gangue by taking advantage of the differences in their hydrophobicity. These differences are generally maximized through the use of a surfactant or wetting agent. Concentrates are then thermally treated and melted which brings about physical and chemical changes that enable the recovery of base metals and PGMs. The main aim of the smelting and converting process is to separate and eliminate the valuable metals from the bulk of the unwanted gangue and essentially all of the iron and to concentrate the metal VALUES (into a high grade converter matte. The matte can be further enriched by magnetic separation, producing a PGM-rich magnetic fraction and a base metal-rich non-magnetic fraction. The magnetic fraction is treated by hydrometallurgical processes to produce a PGM concentrate which is further refined to separate and purify the individual metals. The non-magnetic fraction is treated to produce marketable metal VALUES (such as nickel, copper, cobalt and to a lesser extent PGMs. The principal objective of any hydrometallurgical extractive process is to leach the desired elements selectively into an aqueous phase so as to separate them from the bulk of the material. The application of submerged electric arc furnace smelting techniques to tin concentrates at the Capper Pass tin smelter in England is discussed. Some experimental data from earlier small scale 50 KVA electric smelting testwork on various low and medium grade tin concentrates is presented. Design considerations for the construction of a 3 MVA electric furnace to treat tin concentrates from the East Kemptville mine in Canada are considered, together with necessary precautions peculiar to the construction of a high grade smelter in close proximity to an existing low grade, complex non-ferrous metal smelting operation<. Slag composition modifications to optimise operational smelting conditions for various concentrates treated are discussed, together with refractory selection. The effect of concentrate impurity levels on the permissible degree of recycle to produce a satisfactory metal product is highlighted.

This paper provides infonnation on selected technologies available for remediation of metal contaminated soils and industrial effluent solutions. Because some of the industrial sites are contaminated with organics (solvents, gasolines and oils), an effort has been made to introduce the most frequently used cost-effective cleanup methods, such as "bioventing" and "composting." The microorganisms involved in these processes are capable of degrading organic soil contaminants to environmentally harmless compounds: water and carbon dioxide. Heavy metals and radionuclides contaminated mining and industrial sites can be remediated by using adapted heap and dump leaching technologies, which can be chemical in nature or bio-assisted. The importance of volume reduction by physical separation is discussed. A special attention is devoted to the remediation of soils by leaching (soil washing) to remove heavy metal contaminants, such as chromium, lead, nickel and cadmium. Furthermore, the applicability of biosorption technology in the remediation of heavy metals and radionuclides contaminated industrial waste waters and acidic mining effluent solutions was indicated.

YOU have been kind enough to ask me to speak to you on "The War and Anglo-American Relations." A speaker always takes the liberty of putting his own interpretation on the scope of his subject. I am going to exercise that privilege, and try to look back over a generation of Anglo-American relationships and forward beyond the present war. I should like particularly to consider responsibilities as well as relationships. A more accurate caption for what I am going to say would be "Anglo-American Responsibilities.?? THE WAR WILL BE WON I am assuming that sooner or later we shall win this war. History and economics point to the same conclusion, that Germany has attempted the impossible and that the seeds of defeat are already sown. As to one ecof1:omic factor, I am already on public record as believing that Germany&apos;s oil supply is inadequate for the war she has launched. That opinion is unchanged. Aside from such tangible factors, moreover, I am convinced that the spirit of freedom is unquenchable, and that no combination of powers will be able to rout it from the British Commonwealth of Nations and the United States. Stronger even than this conviction is my faith in a God who will not suffer the defeat of man&apos;s aspiration to be master of his own soul. I am sure that all of you share that faith, and that we need not argue it. We can start with the assumption that the war will end in victory. The subject we are to consider, then, is the relationship of the English-thinking peoples during the conflict, and their joint responsibilities in the difficult days that will follow it. A CANADIAN-AMERICAN No talk on such a subject is worth listening to unless the audience knows the background and fundamental beliefs of the speaker. No human statement stands alone; behind and beside and within it are the ideals and the bias of the man who makes it. Because I am a stranger to most of you, I am constrained to talk about myself before I talk about more important matters. The review may be profitable, not because of the subject, but because it may illustrate the evolution of an attitude toward England.

Geomembrane (GMB) liners are being used more frequently for the storage or capping of mine waste due to stricter regulatory requirements relating to environmental protection. The longevity of any liner system will be a function of environmental conditions, design (including materials selection), construction and condition monitoring during operations or closure. Based on experience and case studies, this paper presents a review, from design to handover, of some of the smaller and often overlooked details that can have significant impacts on the performance of the GMB and the project overall.The topics covered will include approaches to selecting and testing GMBs to ensure they are suitable. Design considerations to aid installation and quality assurance during construction. Understanding action leakage rates and the consequences of leakage when it creates whales. The Bureau of Mines conducted a preliminary investigation to determine the state of stress in crystalline rock outcrops near Atlanta, Ga. The secondary principal stresses in a horizontal plane near the surface are compressive and are 500 to 3,000 psi. The maximum compressive stress is northeast-southwest in the Stone Mountain-Lithonia district but changes to northwest-southeast near Douglasville. The elastic constants were determined from data obtained by static and dynamic laboratory methods and in situ velocity measurements. Results show Young&apos;s modulus to be dependent upon both stress level and anisotropy in the rock. Average secant moduli obtained from triaxial tests were used to compute the applied stress from borehole deformation measurements.

Gas stirring, simultaneous arcing, chemical additions are some basic steps in the secondary steel making. From tap to team however, there are enough uncertainties and several in-situ decision making required to match the fmal composition and temperature in the given amount of processing time. Currently available control algorithms rely on overall material and heat balance coupled with a self-learning regression based tuning of model constants. In this paper we demonstrate the capabilities of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in modeling and analyzing the thermo-chemical aspects of secondary Steelmaking. These models take advantage of scientific and engineering advances in computational tools and provide almost real time speed of analysis. This can be a very effective tool for operator training, process debugging and improvement as well as new innovations. "Chloride ions and their interactions with two organic smoothing additives – Cyquest® N-900 and HydroStar® 4208 – during copper electrodeposition were explored using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results revealed that chloride ions, up to a concentration of 40 mg/L, depolarized the copper deposition reaction. A combination of chloride ions and Cyquest N-900 inhibited the depolarization reaction during copper electrodeposition. It is proposed that the chloride ions acted as bridging ligands between copper and Cyquest N-900. Addition of HydroStar at a concentration of 2.5 mg/L depolarized the copper deposition reaction when no chloride ions were present. This behavior did not change with the addition of chloride ions at the concentrations tested, indicating that chloride ions and the polysaccharide do not interact.IntroductionElectrowinning is a major production method used to obtain high-purity copper. In modern tankhouses, copper is electrodeposited onto stainless steel blanks and then stripped, washed and bundled for delivery. Significant improvements in the quality of electrowon copper have been made over the last few decades. Additives, temperature, current density, electrolyte concentrations and agitation are known to influence the quality of copper electrodeposits (Jenkins and Eamon, 1990).The influence of chloride and organic additives on copper electrodeposition has been the subject of considerable research. The addition of small quantities of chloride and organic additives has been recognized to significantly improve the properties of copper electrodeposits. These additives are critical in the prevention of dendrite growth and the production of smooth, dense cathode deposits.Chloride ions have been reported to catalyze the copper reduction reaction and assist in the production of uniform deposits (Lakshmanan et al., 1977; Sun and O’Keefe, 1992). Moreover, it is generally agreed that chloride ions depolarize the copper deposition process at low (several millimolar) chloride concentrations. This is because chloride ions catalyze the reduction of copper (II) ions to copper (I) ions (Cu2+ ? Cu+ + e-) in the rate-limiting step of this process (O’Keefe and Hurst, 1978; Ilgar and O’Keefe, 1997; Hebert, 2005; Shao, Pattanaik and Zangari, 2007)."

The Pinto Valley concentrator of BHP Copper Inc. restarted its sulfide mining operations in September 2007 to produce copper and molybdenum concentrates. During the plant production ramp up, the copper/molybdenum circuit quickly reached the copper grade and recovery targets, but the production and quality of the molybdenum concentrate continued to be a challenge. Even though several improvements in the molybdenum circuit were completed, the final molybdenum concentrate did not meet contractual specifications. After reviewing several options to improve grade and reduce contaminants, the installation of three flotation columns were chosen. The column design and construction were done using in-house craftsmen and engineers. Ten days after commissioning, the columns successfully reached a steady operation and began producing molybdenum concentrate to the required specifications, that is, high molybdenum tenors and low copper and iron content. The Pinto Valley operations, are comprised of the Pinto Valley concentrator, the Pinto Valley dump leaching and a solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) plant. The concentrator operated from 1972 to 1998 when mining and milling operations were curtailed for economic reasons. The SX/EW plant continued operations for copper cathode production. After a cessation of mining operations of almost 10 years, Pinto Valley operations began a restart project in January 2007, to bring the mine and the concentrator back into production. Copper concentrate production started in October 2007 after refurbishing and upgrading the facilities with a new DCS system and filter plant. The daily targets of the concentrator were to treat 56.7 kt (62,500 st) of ore, produce 762 t (840 st) of copper concentrate containing 27.5 percent copper at recoveries of 86 percent and produce 2.2 t (2.5 st) of molybdenum concentrate containing more than 80 percent MoS2.

Long before the dawn of recorded history, man began to dig into the earth&apos;s crust in a never ending search for useful materials. It has been well established that prehistoric man discovered flint. "The Flintstones" were aptly named. The flintknappers of southern England and Wales still exist today in ever dwindling numbers as they seek out chunks of flint. It is a well known fact that more than half of the earth&apos;s crust is composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2), also known as silica. Silica and silica containing materials have a great many uses in modern society. However, this material is potentially extremely hazardous to our health. Centuries before the Christian Era, Hippocrates wrote of a lung disease common to those who mined in hard rock. It is obvious to us that he was describing silicosis. It is also apparent from ancient writings, that the Egyptians were aware of this malady. Dioscorides also wrote on this subject in the fifth century, B.C. It is undoubtedly the oldest and best studied of the occupational lung diseases. It was certainly described by Agricola in his "De Re Metallica" published in 1556, in which he described lung disease among hard rock miners. This publication, I&apos;m sure, is of special interest and perhaps known to many of you in the mining community. The original document was written in Latin and was translated in 1912 by two gentlemen, Hoover and Hoover. One of these translators was Herbert L. Hoover, a former president of the United States, who made his living before his presidency as a mining engineer.

A comparison of gold, platinum and sulfide ion selective electrodes was made in this investigation for determination of Eh in solutions containing sulfide ions as a model system. The comparison was made in terms of the accuracy of the measured response, response time, pH dependence, and reproducibility of measurement. In addition, the sensitivity of each electrode towards changes in sulfide ion concentration was measured in terms of the change in measured Eh per decade change in concentration of sulfide ions. On the basis of a detailed investigation of the electrode processes occurring at the surface of gold and platinum electrodes, it was postulated that within the pH range investigated these electrodes respond to changes in the hydrosulfide ion, HS-, concentration in solution. In comparison, the sulfide ion selective electrode is known to respond to changes in the sulfide ion, S-, activity in solution. Although the potentials measured with gold and platinum electrodes were mixed potentials, pretreatment procedures can be used to obtain a signal suitable for process control. For control of sulfide ions in flotation pulps, the use of a gold electrode pretreated at 1.0 V with respect to a standard hydrogen electrode is recommended.

Nickel-base single-crystal superalloys are used for gas turbine airfoil applications due to their excellent high temperature properties. A good understanding of the mechanical response of these alloys under different temperature and loading conditions is essential for modeling their behavior. In this study, the low cycle fatigue behavior of CMSX 2 oriented with the loading axis along [001] was investigated under zero-compression strain-controlled loading at 1100°C. The experiments were performed with or without a two-minute dwell (hold) in compression. The microstructure before and after testing was analyzed to understand the deformation characteristics including the effect of dwell.

The objective of this work was to prove repeated loading capacities and investigate the selectivity of physically stabilized algal biomass from Spirulina platensis and Chlorella sp. for the removal and recovery of cobalt, nickel and chromium from laterite heap leach liquors. The testwork was carried out on a bench scale in small glass columns and proved that it was possible to immobilize the biomass on the highly porous surface of pumice stone (kissiris). Nickel and cobalt could be removed from pure aqueous solutions of each metal by the immobilized cyanobacterial biomass. Nickel and also cobalt biosorption was sensitive to the initial solution pH. Cobalt recoveries up to 80% were achieved after 5 loading cycles, from low concentration solutions, at pH 6.0. Nickel removal was complete under the same conditions, whereas chromium sorption was ineffective. Desorption of the metal loaded columns was effected by dilute sulfuric acid. The algal species giving the best adsorption capacities for the metals under consideration was selected for further experimental work with real laterite heap leach solution produced by column leaching. A statistical analysis of all obtained results was conducted using the fraction of metal removed as response. The ratio "mass of metal removed to mass of protein contained in the immobilized cells" was determined as well. The described method might be applicable for recovery of cobalt and nickel from diluted laterite heap leach solutions, such as heap wash waters, or for their removal from waste streams of a hydrometallurgical extraction process.

Pulang Copper Mine, being China&#39;s largest newly built mine using block caving, boasts an annual production capacity of 12.5 million tons. Production level and roadway stability hold the key to the successful application of block caving. However, with Tong Kuangyu being the only mine in China which has applied such a method, we currently lack relevant experience in the successful application of the method. This paper has studied the influence of different rock mass zonings, fault thickness, fault dip angles, on-site construction quality on the production level, roadway stability of block caving through numerical simulation and analysed the roadway stability in different kinds of support solutions so as to ensure the successful application of block caving in Pulang Copper Mine. The results have shown that the existing support method in Pulang Copper Mine can meet the requirement of roadway support in zone II and III, but could not satisfy the demand in terms of support strength in the relatively fragmented zone I area. When roadway passes through the fault, the deformation of surrounding rock and plastic zone of roadway will gradually decrease with the increase of fault dip angle; the deformation of surrounding rock and plastic zone of roadway will gradually increase with the increase of fault thickness. An ideal support effect can be achieved through the joint support of grouting and bolting when roadway passes through the fault. In the measured model of on-site construction, there is stress concentration in the intersection between the access and transverse drift of ore removal.
