Fe-Cr-C production is a very high electrical energy consuming process. Decrease up to 10% of this electrical energy is expected when self-reducing agglomerates are used. This research aims to understand how the synergetic effects are when stronger reductant, like Fe-Si, is substituted for coke in self reducing pellets. Brazilian chromites containing 41.2%Cr2O3 were mixed with petroleum coke and agglomerated with cement as the binder. Small amounts of 1%, 2% and 4% of Fe-75%Si were substituted for the equivalent petroleum coke, and pure silica plus hydrated lime were added for adjusting the slag composition. The mixture was pelletized, dried and submitted at 1773K up to complete the reactions. The results showed that the reduction reactions were 1.4 and 2 times faster with 1% and 2%Fe-Si addition, respectively, than with no addition. The microscopic analysis showed that it was formed a liquid phase, but the pellet did not collapse what indicates that the coalescence of the metallic phase depends on the dissolution of the pre-reduced particles of the chromites into slag.

Blister copper from converting of copper matte is processed by fire refining prior to electrorefining. The fire refining consists of two steps: copper oxidation with impurities slagging and copper reduction. The classical batch process is carried out in vascular or reverberatory furnaces called anode furnaces. A new process for continuous copper fire refining has been proposed. The copper flows through two reactors in cascade, where is oxidized and reduced. The flow of a liquid copper through a ceramic packed bed increases the surface area and the rate of oxidation as well as the rate of reduction in the packed bed of charcoal. Mathematical modelling allowed for the design of a laboratory scale demonstration installation and industrial-pilot installation in Hernan Videla Lira Smelter (Paipote). The results have demonstrated the process feasibility and flexibility in operation.

Theoretical investigation and laboratory experimentation have shown a great potential for jet fan ventilation in mines. Jet fans, also called induction fans due to the induction effect of the fluid jet to ventilate headings, may have particular application in remote-controlled production operations. This paper summarizes ongoing research using a scaled laboratory model. The model uses water as a fluid medium and simulates a typical 25m long heading of 1.5mx6m cross-section. The effects of various nozzle positions and designs have been investigated by using still photography as a tool for flow visualization. It is also found that the use of jets in combination with line curtains has enhanced the overall ventilating effect in the model entry.

In the treatment of gases from pyrometallurgical processes prior to acid manufacture, volatile components, sulphur trioxide and particulates ,are removed in wet gas cleantng systems. In the process a weak acid stream is generated, typically less than 10% H2S04, contaminated with volatiles such as arsenic, fluoride and chloride', plus metallic particulates. This effluent stream has, in the past, been disposed of in a variety of different ways. As a result of changing environmental legislation, smelters are having to review alternative solutions for treating this effluent stream. This paper' will describe a process developed by Chemetics which treats this effluent stream, generating a small dry metal sulphate stream plus a clean acid stream which is suitable for recycling to the smelter acid plant.

Low-temperature adiabatic heat-capacity determinations were made by the Bureau of Mines in the temperature range from 5 to 300 K for the two crystalline modifications of zinc sulfide, sphalerite (ß) and wurtzite (a). The entropy at 298.15 K of sphalerite was evaluated as l4.02±0.04 cal/deg mole and wurtzite, l4.06±0.04 cal/deg mole.

A fast-flow reactor mass spectrometer has been utilized to investigate the reactions of gas-phase gold cluster anions with CO and oxygen. Addition of CO to Aun - produces species of the form Au(CO)m -, where m = 2-5. However, CO does not bind to Au2 - or Au3 -. With oxygen addition in the cluster source, gold oxide species with both molecular and atomized oxygen are produced. The addition of carbon monoxide to these preoxidized gold cluster anions reveals that select species with 1, 2, and 3 gold atoms participate in the oxidation reaction to produce CO2. Bimolecular rate constants for the reactions between these species and CO are also discussed.

WHEN the white pioneers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries advanced from the coastal settlements of southern Africa into the interior of the subcontinent, they found it inhabited, more or less sparsely, by brown or black peoples mainly of pastoral habits but equipped with a fighting spirit and certain fighting weapons. Some of the tribes were smiths, others were miners and metallurgists; all used fuel, either industrially or domestically. Some of that fuel was wood, some cattle dung, and in some places the natives mined outcrop coal. Coal was first discovered by Europeans in Natal about 1840. After proper deliberation and after allowing due time for a consideration of all the implications, the Natal Government decided in 1881 (40 years after) to import an English expert to investigate and report on the discovery. Things then moved rapidly, and in what to a geologist is the remarkably short space of eight years, Natal collieries were producing at the rate of nearly 30,000 long tons per annum or 100 long tons per working day!

COAL mining technique progressed slowly until the advent of mechanized mining. The cutting machine was a forward step, but had only a limited effect upon improving the percentage of coal recovery. Previously, the physical fitness of the loaders and the total output of the miners fixed mine production. The miner was an independent contractor and supervision over his working place was superficial. Rising costs and the inroads of substitute fuels demanded increased output per man to lower the unit production cost. Therefore, the amount of coal loaded mechanically in underground bituminous mines has risen from 0.3 per-cent in 1923 to 7.4 in 1929, to 20.2 in 1937, and to 48.9 percent in 1943. When loading devices were introduced it became necessary to adapt them to existing systems of mining, or to alter the mining system to fit the machine. An increased amount of supervision was required as output depended upon proper operation of the machine rather than on the physical fitness of the individual.

ADDRESSING the Ohio Section at a recent meeting in Columbus, Ohio, R. C. Allen, executive vice-president for Oglebay, Norton & Co., Cleveland, spoke on "The Iron-Ore Industry of the Lake Superior Region in Prosperity and Depression." The speaker considered this region in connection with the problem of national security. This is the age of minerals; progress depends on them; and next to agriculture, the mineral industry is of prime importance. The United States has no shortage of minerals rather an over-supply; but many mines have been and are being exhausted. The shifting of the sources of supplies of minerals so important as copper, petroleum, and iron to other countries would create internal strains and affect international relations. There will be no early decline of ore mining in the Lake Superior region unless it is forced by unwise public policies. Iron ore is industrial strength and self-sufficiency. A study of economic geography is important for statesmen and mining men, because the minerals essential for peace and war are haphazardly or irregularly distributed throughout the world. Of these minerals, 75 per cent are owned by 10 per cent of the population, mainly peoples of Anglo-Saxon origin.

THAT neither the Reconstruction Finance Corp. nor its subsidiary, the Metals Reserve Corp., are in competition with private enterprise was stressed by Charles B. Henderson in an informal talk before the N. Y. Section, A.I.M.E., on Sept. 23. Among other things, the speaker stated that the R.F.C., since its establishment, had authorized loans of $12,000,000, of which over $8,775,000 has actually been distributed. Of this amount, over $6,600,000 has been repaid. None of this money was appropriated by Congress, the sole assistance from that body being the initial authorization of $500,000,000 capital stock.

HOSTS of friends will rejoice that T. A. Rickard has been given honorary membership in the Institute. It might well have been done long ago, since, when one reviews distinguished services rendered by individuals to our organization and our profession, it is at once apparent that his name ranks high and that he has merited this distinction for more than three decades. Our by-laws restrict this list to twenty names; "T.A." becomes the sixteenth living member. Young engineers should particularly be pleased; Mr. Rickard has had a career rich in human interest, and full of useful suggestions to the younger men; he has given them good advice and set them a notable example; he, more than anyone else, has shown them how technical writing can be clear and concise; he has inspired youngsters to do their best; he has been their friend. No one has more first-hand knowledge of these facts than the writer of this appreciation:

AT A meeting of the Boston Local Section of the Institute, on Oct. 3, approval was voted to the work done by its representatives on the Committee opposing the passage of a bill by the, Massachusetts Legislature to license engineers. The report is as follows: The Joint Committee on Licensing of Engineers, which included a Committee of the Boston Society of Civil Engineers and representatives of seven other societies,* submitted to the members of the respective societies, on Jan. 8, 1921, a report in which it was stated that on Jan. 4, 1921, a petition was filed in the Legislature of Massachusetts by the Boston Chapter of the American Association of Engineers accompanied by a bill to provide for the registration of professional engineers and land surveyors. ENGINEERING education has been powerfully affected by the impact of war, just how powerfully can be better understood after considering the postwar problems regarding students, staff, and plant. In time of war no one will question the necessity of expediency of military training. With the cessation of hostilities, expediency gives way to the evolutionary process of strengthening engineering education as need is exemplified by experience. During the war, except for the Navy V-12 program, engineering education was at its lowest ebb of the century. Freshman enrollments were largely limited to those graduating from high school at the age of seventeen; and the upperclass, to those disqualified for active service. In most schools the experienced staff was either in service or government and industrial research. Many may never return to their former occupations. A NEW record-a quarter million students in the engineering schools of the United States and Canada-has resulted from the great demand for engineers following World War II. The figures released by the American Society for Engineering Education and which appeared in detail in the Journal of Engineering Education for January 1948, show that, on Nov. 1, 1947, 252,250 students were studying engineering in 149 engineering schools of both countries. There are 244,390 in the 143 schools canvassed in the United States, and 7860 in six schools in Canada. Built-in-place (BIP) refuge alternatives (RAs) are designed to provide a secure space for miners who cannot escape during a mine emergency. Heat and humidity buildup within RAs may expose miners to physiological hazards such as heat stress. To minimize the risk of heat stress, Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), or 30 CFR, mandates a maximum allowable apparent temperature (AT) for an occupied RA of 35 °C (95 °F). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted extensive research on the thermal environment of occupied RAs intended for use in underground coal mines. NIOSH research has demonstrated that a fully occupied BIP RA can exceed the AT limit by more than 5.6 °C (10 °F) in mines with elevated mine strata and air temperatures. In this circumstance, an RA cooling system could provide a solution. This paper provides an overview of test methodology and findings as well as guidance on improving the performance of a cryogenic air system prototype by optimizing the flow rate, increasing the tank storage capacity, and improving the efficiency of the heat exchanger of the cryogenic system. This may enable BIP RAs to meet the 35 °C (95 °F) AT limit in mines with elevated temperatures. The information in this paper is useful for RA manufacturers and mines that may choose to implement a cryogenic air system as a heat mitigation strategy.

(Glen Summit Meeting, June, 1911.) THREE great deposits of iron-ore, in Camaguey and Oriente Provinces, Cuba, are well known to me through careful field-examinations executed in the years 1901 and 1907. In 1901 I visited the Cubitas iron-ore district, which lies about 12 miles distant from the city of Camaguey in a northerly direction, and the Mayari district, which includes the Sierra Nipe, lying opposite Nipe bay on the north side of Oriente Province. In 1907 I again visited the Cubitas district, and also made a sojourn of several days in the Moa district, where the extensive deposits of iron-ore were observed and studied. The observations of 1901 were made under the auspices of the then Military Governor of Cuba; Gen. Leonard Wood, and my conclusions concerning the value of these deposits were incorporated in a report.1 The examination of certain denouncements of iron-ore in the Moa district in 1907 was made in behalf of iron-masters operating in the United States, to whom I reported the existence of large amounts of easily-workable limonitic iron-ore, properly designated " brown iron-ore " in the terminology now current among iron-ore producers in the United States. In 1908 I published a paper entitled Three Deposits of Iron Ore in Cuba, outlining the occurrence and origin of the surficial ores existing in the Cubitas, Mayari, and Moa districts.2 . 1 A Geological Reconnoissance of Cuba, by C. THERE have been eight different oil zones identified and produced at Santa Fe Springs, of which three or four are in turn divided into two or three parts. These zones are, from top to bottom, the Foix, difference of opinion over this nomenclature, with reference to the different zones referred to as Clark, it has no particular bearing on the water problems. Each of these oil zones has had waters of varying salinity associated with it, either within or at the bottom of the 'zone. Table 1 is a tabulation of the zones, their maximum thicknesses, salinity and heads of various waters. Surface waters are fresh, and of high head, giving artesian flow in some instances.

Today, solutions to optimize Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) & Operational Expenditure (OPEX) for small capacity Cold Rolling Mills (CRM) as well as for high capacity CRM are available, as extensively described by various Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) & steel makers. A suitable solution for small capacity CRM is to start with a single stand reversing mill (up to 400 ktpy, depending on product mix), which can then be expanded into a twin stand mill (up to 900 ktpy, depending on product mix). The main drawbacks in conventional practice are the off-gauge length in single stand set-up and the long downtime of the mill during the erection of the second stand. For higher productions CRM, it is common practice to directly select a new Pickling Line Tandem Cold Mill (PLTCM), with a high CAPEX. Is there an in-between solution that would allow to start with limited output and CAPEX, without jeopardizing the ultimate expansion goal (1.2 to 2 mtpy), for which PLTCM is the best techno-economical choice? In the absence of a solution, JOHN COCKERILL developed an integrated solution that limits the CAPEX in the first phase of development, without crippling affecting future endeavors through an easy and economically sustainable expansion into a PLTCM, without long production downtime. The solution consists of first installing a twin stand mill, expandable into a tandem mill thanks to a smart design of the line. It is therefore possible to limit the production to 900 ktpy in the first phase of the project and then convert the mill into PLTCM in the second phase to increase the production from 1.2 to 2 mtpy, depending on the market trends and financial capabilities. In summary, JOHN COCKERILL has developed a smart new layout in reversing phase combined with a brand new rolling strategy to optimize productivity and limit off-gauge, compared to conventional solutions (patents pending). In addition the layout enables an easy conversion to tandem mill without high over investments, which is more sustainable financially than the initial purchase of a PLTCM. Long downtimes to allow for capacity extension, detrimental to this phase-by-phase approach, are also avoided. Technical and process description of the new layouts and rolling strategies, together with CAPEX & OPEX descriptions of the phases are detailed in this paper.
