Fayalite based slag is formed during the smelting process of secondary copper resources. It was found that with the presence of high ZnO, the slag became viscous, causing a slag tapping problem. In the present paper, the phase relations of the slag system ZnO-“FeO”-SiO2-Al2O3- CaO (ZnO = 0-12 wt%, Al2O3% = 0-15 wt%, CaO = 0-1.5 wt%, with iron saturation) at 1150 °C is studied by using quenching technique followed by phase identification and compositional analysis of equilibrated samples. The dependence of FeO and Al2O3 solubility in the liquid slag on the chemical composition of slag is characterized. Based on the experimental data, the solid fraction of the slag, which may considerably, influences the slag viscosity, at the tapping temperature can be reasonably estimated and, therefore an appropriate modification of the slag composition can be made.

INTRODUCTION This part contains field case studies of typical mishaps, accidents, equipment damage or post installation failures resulting from mistakes in design, manufacturing and construction, as well as improper storage, handling and installation procedures of the equipment covered in Part 1. GENERAL Certain mistakes are repeated and common rules violated on almost all industrial equipment installations, with the inevitable consequences of additional cost, construction delays and aggravation of all parties involved. The most common failures are in the following areas: Cleanliness of all components during installation and later in operation. Adherance to manufacturer' s recommendations and tolerances for equipment installation. Comprehensive, properly identified installation and maintenance records. Handling of the components. Adequate tooling and auxiliary equipment in working order. An inoperable hydraulic power unit for torque wrench or for jacking of the mill, or faulty crane can be a very costly proposition. A special area in comminution circuits are wear components. Apart from the mill liners, the wear components such as, feed chutes, rock boxes, mill trunnion liners, discharge sumps, etc. are designed to the best theoretical configuration, based on experiences in similar installations. However, each process is different to a various degree, mainly because of various types of ores and grinding requirements. Consequently the first generation of wear components is very seldom the ideal one. Based on operational experience, the shape and material of wear components should be modified, until the optimum, most economical design is achieved. SHIPPING AND STORAGE Considerable damage to the equipment can be done by careless packing, shipping or storage.

This Bureau of Mines report and its companion report (Information Circular 9143) have been prepared to assist in the preparation of prefeasibility type estimates for capital and operating costs of mining of various types of mineral occurrences using current technology. The handbook provides a convenient costing procedure based on the summation of the casts for the unit processes required in any particular mining or mineral processing operation. The costing handbook consists of a series of costing sections, each corresponding to a specific mining unit process. Contained within each section is the methodology to estimate either the capital or operating cost for that unit process. The unit process sections may be used to generate, in January 1984 dollars, costs through the use of either costing curves or formulae representing the prevailing technology. Coverage for surface mining includes dredging, quarrying, strip mining, and open pit mining. The underground mining includes individual development sections for drifting, raising, shaft sinking, stope development, various mining methods, underground mine haulage, general plant, and underground mine administrative cost. This system can be used for estimating cost data for an undeveloped deposit or for checking or verifying mining costs from a developed deposit, with a minimum amount of background information.

Local accumulation of methane in workings of a longwall is one of the most common causes of mining accidents. This gas has many sources: it may leak from goaf through permeable sealings, or through gaps between roof support sections. This stream is then mixed with ventilation air. In the case of auxiliary ventilation ducts, or free jet fans, we have to consider the propagation of a clean air stream in areas with an air-methane mixture. Therefore, modelling the mixing process of methane with ventilation air is important for determining the hazardous areas and thus to ensure safety. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD), specifically the finite volume method, provides tools for such modelling. However, this method requires validation. For this purpose, we have compared measurements with simulations for selected test cases having sufficient similarity to the present problems. In typical methane explosion hazard areas, such as a longwall, it is difficult to make measurements sufficiently to confirm credibility of 3D CFD simulations. As a relevant alternative, an injector methane drainage station placed in an underground gallery has been selected. The stream of drained goaf methane is entrained by compressed air powered injectors and then mixed with ventilation air. Research in this area does not interfere with mining operations, it can be performed safely in a repeatable way. Flow within the site has many similarities to conditions in mine drifts of the longwall area. Comparative research of measuring the methane concentration distribution in the mine drift downstream injector station, with simulations of propagation of the methane stream, was carried out. For measuring the methane concentration distribution in the mine drift a multipoint measurement velocity system developed at the Strata Mechanics Research Institute was used. For the simulation a finite volume method for turbulent flow of gas mixtures was applied. Preliminary results of comparison are shown as graphs and tables.CITATION:Janus, J and Krawczyk, J, 2013. OneSteel Whyalla’s grate-kiln-cooler pelletising plant was commissioned in 1968 processing haematite feed from the local South Middleback Ranges mining area. The existence of a magnetite resource beneath the haematite ore at Iron Duke had been known for some time. In 2004, a decision was made to covert the primary iron source for the Whyalla steelworks from haematite to magnetite – known as project magnet. The intent of the project was to convert the feed to the steelworks from haematite to magnetite and to free up the remaining haematite resource for export. The pelletising plant was cut over to a magnetite feed in 2007.The thermochemical differences of magnetite compared to haematite are threefold:1. the introduction of an exothermic reaction during conversion of magnetite to haematite,2. the absence of bound water which existed within the haematite, and3. lower gangue content requiring lower fluxing levels and therefore lower calcination energy demand.The combination of these differences results in a significantly different induration requirement for magnetite as compared to haematite. The change therefore required extensive research and test work to design modifications to the furnace and to ensure appropriate risk mitigation for the Whyalla steelworks.Preliminary pot-grate test work was performed to define the pellet chemistry and confirm the suitability of the magnetite to produce pellets suitable for the OneSteel blast furnace. A heating curve was developed by use of computer-based heat and mass balance modelling. Extensive pilot scale grate-kiln-cooler test work was then performed to confirm the heating curve and to verify and fine-tune the pellet properties. Computation fluid dynamics was used to design the physical changes to the furnace required to achieve the proposed heating curve.Following installation of an additional preheat zone, including a wall and dilution air fans, into the preheating furnace, and installation of an additional wall into the cooler, the modified furnace was commissioning in December 2007. The plant performed as expected during commissioning with the actual heating curve matching the proposed curve and the produced pellets within blast furnace specifications.

"In 2005, an inspection showed that the Deception Bay Wharf in the Canadian Arctic was at the end of its service life. Although Deception Bay is closed with landfast ice up to 5 ft thick, shipping operations continue year-round, with additional voyages in the summer open-water season to supplement mine supplies. The rehabilitation scheme that allowed minimal interruptions to shipping involved concrete caissons cast on barges and an ingenious placing system.WorleyParsons Westmar of Vancouver, B.C., performed the inspection under contract to the owner, Xstrata Nickel, Montreal, Quebec. The wharf, on the coast of the Nunavik region of Quebec, was originally constructed in 1971 for an asbestos mine, and is now used to support Xstrata’s Raglan nickel mine, importing fuel for p o w e r g e n e r a t i o n a n d general mine supplies, and exporting nickel concentrate to smelters in the south. Emergency repairs were essential to allow operations to continue at the site, while the parties considered permanent rehabilitation options and secured funding. The repairs were done in the openwater seasons, and included reinforcing the failed interlocks above water level with steel patch plates and injection grouting of the cell fill below the port crane in 2005. In 2006, workers installed a circumferential belting system below water level.Westmar held critical planning sessions with the mine operation personnel to find ways to stretch the limits of the mine supplies and nickel storage facilities. In the end, the parties agreed to shut down construction activities four times during the ice-free season to allow access to the dock site.Westmar developed a plan that allowed mine operations to continue during construction, and Xstrata approved the plan and budget in September 2006, for execution in 2007. Rapid construction was essential. To accommodate the short construction season and maintain minimum levels of service for the mine, the work was radically different from conventional Arctic deep-sea port construction. Like the original Deception Bay Wharf, construction practice was to use steel sheet pile circular cells with the consequential heavy support services for the labour force. Construction duration was typically two seasons. The plan for Deception Bay was executable in one season based on a concrete caisson structure. Only a modest amount of schedule float was needed."

The Federal Bureau of Mines has been a leader in resource recovery research since it was founded in 1910. Until the early 19601s, most of the projects were concerned primarily with the task of extending and improving conventional technology oriented to secondary metals and minerals upgrading and processing for marketable products of highest value. By the mid-1960's with the passage of the Solid Waste Disposal Act of 1965, all resource recovery research programs were increased in scope and intensity as an effort to solve the growing number of environmental problems and the rapid depletion of domestic energy and mineral resources. Many new materials were investigated including urban refuse, manufacturing, industrial wastes, and stockyard wastes. The objective was to promote maximum recycling as the most practical answer to problems of waste disposal, pollution control, and the short supply of minerals and energy. The new research projects ranged from the conversion of animal manure and other organics to oil, to the recovery of precious and common metals from demolished aircraft and electronic scrap. This profile includes brief descriptions of many selected research projects that typify, the total spectrum of Bureau of Mines research in the important field of resource recovery.

THE object of the work was to increase the capacity of the plant and, if possible, to reduce costs of the actual unit grinding while doing so. The accompanying assays of an infra-sizer analysis of the cyanide tail (Table l) illustrate the problem in hand. The cyanide tail is a combination of two products, gangue and FeS2. The assay alters by virtue of a change in gold value due to grinding and the relative quantity of FeS2 in the sizes, which itself varies with the grind. The disposal tail is the residue after the cyanide tail is scavenged by flotation, most of the pyrite being removed for roasting. It presents a somewhat different problem, since grinding gangue is all gain, but -10 micron FeS2 does not float nearly as well as + 10 product. This results in compromise in the final size to be aimed at. Extra grinding has hardly any appreciable effect on the gold extraction from the FeS2. The scope of this paper is such that it was deemed advisable to group the contents into several main sections. They are: Section 1. Geography and Geology. Section II. Historical Review. (a) Mining and Smelting in Alabama. (b) Milling. (c) Summary of Milling Research. These two sections are primarily a bibliography and summary of the research on the Birmingham Red Mountain ores up to the middle 1040's. Section III. Status of the Birmingham Iron Industry. This sect ion points out the extent to which the findings of the iron-ore research have been applied on a commercial scale. Also, a very brief description of the dependent and allied industries is included. The value of the Birmingham iron ore is greatly enhanced by the proximity of coal and dolomite. Thus the coal and coke industry and the dolomite industry are closely allied with and to a large extent dependent upon the possibilities of economic utilization of the Red Mountain iron ores. Section IV. Beneficiation Investigations of the Red Mountain Iron Ores. This is a record of the most recent, hitherto unpublished work of the Southern Experiment Station of the Federal Bureau of Mines, Tuscaloosa, Ala., on the chemical and physical composition not only of the Big seam but of most of the iron-bearing rock strata of Red Mountain.

The purpose of this bulletin is to describe the methods of constructing and operating representative types of plants in the United States used for removing the light hydrocarbons from petroleum by continuous distillation, such plants being commonly known in the trade as topping or skimming plants. In the discussion of each plant an endeavor has been made to arrange the text similarly in order to facilitate comparison and to emphasize the important features. The various experimental values for the specific and the latent heats of the oils apply approximately to the oil treated. Careful experiments with each oil and its commercial fractions were not justifiable in view of the purpose of this report. It is regretted that limitations for recording data at the different plants made impossible the determination of a heat balance for each, which would have provided an equitable method of comparing efficiencies. The writer has confined himself to a comparison of the relative efficiencies of the distilling apparatus alone by the following method: Effi . f till d tt" _ Heat theoretically required. ciency 0 SIS an se mgs - Heat content of fuel consumed. The plants described are all in California where the topping industry has had its growth accentuated by the character and the use of the oil handled. The scarcity of suitable coal made the adoption of other fuel necessary, and the heavy oil of California supplied the need. To raise the flash point and to dehydrate this oil, various plants have been developed. However, the topping industry is represented in other fields; the Roxana Petroleum Co. of Cushing, Okla., and the Warner-Quinlan Asphalt Co. of New Jersey, are operating Trumble plants, and Texas and Oklahoma operators have been experimenting with different pipe retorts for continuous running. In addition to the reasons for topping cited above, in California topping has other purposes which give the plants practically a universal field in the oil industry. These additional purposes are (1) to remove the lighter constituents of the oil prior to storage for a long period, thus reducing the losses from evaporation, (2) to dehydrate and clean the oil, and (3) in conjunction with a complete refinery, to remove the lighter fractions cheaply and quickly, leaving a residue to be rerun for lubricants, coke, and other products. The reader in studying a plant for possible adaption to his own use should note that local considerations enter into the design and size of a plant. Several questions present themselves, as follows: 1. What type is suitable for the oil? 2. How much money is available for construction? 3. Will the volume of residuum be large enough for heat exchange with the crude? 4. Can the heat content of the vapors be used to reduce the cooling-water requirements? 5. What method will best recover the heat from stack gases? 6. Are the various pieces of apparatus adequate in size and best adapted to their purpose? 7. Is every possible provision made for the recovery of waste heat? 8. What products will be made, and what volume of each? 9. Is there provision for the recovery of light vapors? 10. Will the saving of fuel justify the capital and maintenance charges on the regenerative apparatus contemplated? It is regretted that information concerning the operation of topping plants with eastern and Middle West oils is not available. The writer carefully canvassed the Middle West, but did not find a plant where operation had progressed beyond the early experimental stages and reliable figures could be furnished. The reader will find fuel economy and heat recovery emphasized throughout the descriptions. The conservation of the available petroleum supply is of the utmost importance, and the Bureau of Mines presents this paper to encourage the hearty cooperation of operators to that end. The Baume gravity scale used throughout the report is that of Tagliabue with a modulus of 141.5 for conversion to specific gravity.

Abstract A discussion of the difficulties involved in the production of a clean molybdenite concentrate introduces the paper. There is a brief description of the various methods for producing molybdenite that will fit marketing specifications, and it is shown how these methods are nor suited to the milling of ores containing small quantities of bismuth and copper. A process that was developed in the ore testing laboratories of the Bureau of Mines at Ottawa for the La Corne mill of the Molybdenite Corporation of Canada is described in derail and some results from pilot plant operation of this milling scheme are tabulated. A description of the La Corne mill, where the writer supervised the introduction of the process on a commercial scale, adds to the interest of the paper. In conclusion, there is a review of the conditions necessary for proper operation of the flowsheet. An attempt is made to show how the process might be satisfactory in other problems similar to that at the La Corne mill. Introduction The production of a molybdenite concentrate, free from impurities and high in grade, has been a difficult task when milling some types of ore. Whereas ordinary flotation techniques will produce acceptable concentrates of the baser sulphides, in many cases they will not serve in the treatment of molybdenite, for this mineral must be of optimum grade and purity to bring the best prices, or to find a market at all . Faced with the necessity of meeting stringent specifications, the mill operator has been forced to employ expensive processing methods, and to be satisfied with low recoveries, in order to make grade with his product. The most objectionable and common impurities found with molybdenite are: (a) gangue minerals and iron sulphides, which lower the grade; and (b) copper, bismuth, or antimony, which are deleterious in the final uses of the molybdenite products. It is difficult, and sometimes impossible, to market a concentrate with over 0.5 per cent of any of the latter impurities, or with a grade much below 90 per cent MoS2. Various methods, which have been highly successful in specific applications, have been developed to meet the problem of producing a suitable concentrate. All of them, however, have certain defects precluding their use when treating ores of a nature different from the one for which they ? were designed. The writer has developed a process for molybdenite ores having an objectionable impurity content. A description of the procedure involved, and of the La Corne mill of the Molybdenite Corporation of Canada, where the process has been adopted, should be of interest to flotation operators.

Determining the origins of air overpressure has been a long-debated topic within the explosives engineering community. Historically, it has been accepted that the initial face movement gave rise to air displacement, resulting in an air overpressure pulse. Later research proposed that the air overpressure pulse resulted from the shockwave rapidly propagating through and impacting the quarry face. Most recently, researchers have derived that air overpressure is associated with the gas phase from which a gaseous product from explosives rapidly pours out the quarry face under high pressure. Significant research has strongly indicated that the time at which the air overpressure pulse exits the face fails to coincide with either the arrival of the shockwave at the free face or the initial face movement. Research has consistently shown that the shockwave arrival at the face occurs before the air overpressure pulse leaves the face. Therefore, to best determine which blast mechanism contributed to the initial air overpressure pulse, testing was aimed at verifying the precise time at which the air overpressure exited the faces compared to when the face first moved. This research describes tests using scaled concrete blocks, which provided the ability to control the key parameters necessary for the research to be successfully concluded. Black powder was selected as the energetic material to eliminate the production of the detonation wave while still inducing other gas-producing effects. The components evaluated were air blast arrival times in front of the face, the initial movement of the blast face, the precise initiation time of the blast hole, timing of pressurization within the rock mass (between borehole and face, or adjacent borehole), and the speed of sound in the air. A detailed timeline was created which portrays the actions within the blast to promote an understanding of the sequencing of events. The results showed that the initial face movement occurred at 17.57 milliseconds (ms) while the calculated time at which the air overpressure exited the face occurred at 7.07 ms. The large disparity continues to reaffirm the premise that the origin fails to coincide with the air pressure pulse. Average pressurization through the block occurred at a rate of 341.23 feet per second (104.15 meters per second) which resulted in the gas release pulse being calculated to exit the face between 4.41 and 6.21 ms. This pulse correlates more accurately with the air overpressure origin timing which will be the focus of continued research. Knowing the precise origin of blast-induced air overpressure will assist in being able to better control it through appropriate blast design.

"According to the behaviors of resistivity-temperature of Cu-Sb70 melt, which suggests a partly reversible temperature-induced liquid structure transitions (LST) could occur in this alloy, in this paper, we investigated the dependence of solidification on the liquid state. Both resistivity and temperature were measured to track solidification process. The results show that the nucleating undercooling of the melt which experienced the LST increased and the solidified time decreased. Meanwhile, the solidified microstructures refined evidently, with the microscopic pattern of primary phase changes from disordered pillarlike dendrites into homotaxic ones. Moreover, it is verified that the microstructures would be different if the reversible part of the LST was restrained. The new phenomena and results reflected in this paper suggest that grasping the rules of melt structure change with temperature before material processing will give help for controlling the solidification more effectively and finally resulting in more ideal microstructures.IntroductionThe structure and quality of liquid alloys have a direct and important influence on the structure, performance and quality of the solidified ones. In recent years with in-depth study of liquid structure, researchers have found that some liquid structure transitions (LST) could occur on dependence of the temperature or pressure [1-5]. And the article [6] reported that a pressure-induced reversible LST was found in liquid triphenyl phosphite, which further confirmed the authenticity of the existence of the LST. Furthermore, in our earlier studies of Sn-based melts using resistivity method, some abnormal structure changes induced by temperature have been found at hundreds of degrees above liqiudus, and these LSTs are partly reversible[7]. This phenomenon has been discussed and it is suggested that the reversible LST in Sn-based melts are related to the short-range ordering (SRO) structures of Sn, which are tetrahedron structure with covalent bonding. However, does this reversible LST exist in other melts too?"

The linear intercept distributions provide unambiguous and accurate characterizations of the texture of mineralogical materials. The relation between the measured linear intercept distributions and the spatial correlation function is shown to be given by: in the Laplace Transform domain. The linear intercept distributions of the two phases in a low- grade chromite-serpentinite ore were measured. and the spatial correlation functions for both phases were evaluated using the above relation. The correlation functions are the primary relations for integral geometric models of mineralogical texture and this work demonstrates the relation between the 10 stereological model and the 3D integral geometry model for mineral liberation.

Small and medium-sized flotation plants with no assaying instrumentation still depend much upon the art of the operator to produce acceptable and consistent results. Improved performance can be accomplished by the use of the simple microscope set up as a control device. The visual recognition of products in the circuit does much to eliminate uncertain shift operating decisions and is an easy technique to acquire. Mineral staining methods further assist in the determination of components within the mill products. Simple mounting upon scotch tape and other adhesives is rapid and convenient. The microscope also has a practical role for the plant metallurgist or laboratory technician when evaluating middling products, and their routing within the circuit. Examples are reviewed where the microscope has been used for operational control in both sulfide and nonmetallic mineral flotation plants.

"The requisite for maintaining optimal carbon concentration levels in a carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit is of paramount importance in the prevention of gold losses. The process’s ability to recover gold from the aqueous phase is primarily dependent on the carbon loading profile of the CIL train.Newmont Boddington Gold (NBG) have over 2015 tested the Mintek online carbon concentration wmeter (C2 Meter) suitability for effective carbon concentration measurements in their CIL circuit compared to the standard method where the readings are taken twice a shift by the operations staff. The C2 meter works by passing a 1MHz ultrasonic signal through a slurry containing carbon where there is a relationship between the carbon concentration and the attenuation of that signal.It also highlighted another area where the C2 meter could be implemented at NBG whereby the instrument can be as a cautionary device for carbon losses in place of carbon safety screens.Citation:McCamley, C, 2016. The petrographic microscope as a tool in determining impurities and grain size of limestones, clays, sand and coal ash for possible use as raw materials is discussed. Its use in the determination of the mineral composition of various size fractions of the raw mix, after fine grinding in ball mills, and of the waste dust from the rotary kiln. A description is given of the typical clinker crystals; alite, belite, tricalcium aluminate and ferrite. The process problems indicated by various changes in the crystal characteristics are listed with possible solutions. Finally the microscope as used in relation to field problems with concrete such as air void volume, percent hydration of the cement, cement aggregate bonding and the determination of solid additives, is presented.

"Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) has become an environmental issue due to technological advance and waste plastic is one of the main polluters. The excessive discard of these plastics result in a difficult to dispose it to landfill and need further separation with technique in order to produce high added value plastics. There are many kinds of plastics in extensive use at the present time and the co=on are the acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) and high impact polystyrene (HIPS) used in the production of electric appliances. These plastics are difficult to separate because they have similar densities. Flotation of plastics is one possible separation technique and using selective wetting agents. The separation may be possible given close control at particle size and the concentration of the reagent. The process was able to produce a concentrate of HIPS with at least of 93% purity and a concentrate of ABS with 99% purity.IntroductionThe current situation of municipal solid waste (MSW) management especially in emerging economies like Brazil, the growing population and economic activity will result in a significant increase in the generation of waste in the coming decades. It is worthwhile to review and update the sources, amounts and recovery technologies of specific materials from waste, particularly from municipal solid waste (MSW).The growing impact of the current waste management practices stresses the need for a change in how waste is handled. The 2012 survey and the Brazilian Association of Public Cleaning and Special Waste Disposal Companies (ABRELPE) reports the generation of 62 Mt urban MSW in that year, which is an increase of 13% compared to 2011. It has been reported that in Brazil about 90.17% of the generated MSW is currently collected, which indicates an increase in the coverage of collection services compared to 2011 [ l]."
