The kinetics of the oxidation of cyanide by manganese dioxide was studied using a rotation disc electrode system. The rate? of the half-cell reaction of cyanide oxidation is increased at higher hydroxide concentrations. An addition of copper up to 0.001 mole/l was found to enhance the diffusion current, especially at a high hydroxide concentration (0. 1M). A similar enhancement of the reaction rate is also achieved with nickel added at levels up to 0.01 mole/l. Manganese dioxide however requires a i:ow pH to achieve reasonable reduction rates. Leaching studies indicated that the initial reaction rate is strongly dependent on pH, initial concentration of cyanide. Using manganese dioxide cyanide could be oxidized at neutral pH's and ambient temperatures.

The borides of the transition metals in Groups IV and VI exhibit, in addition to a certain degree of hardness, considerable resistance to heat and oxidation. They have high melting points (1,850°-3,060° C.) and low coefftcients of thermal expansion and can be bonded with other materials and hot-pressed to desired shape (cermets). Suggested uses for the borides include use in rockets and jet engines, as thermocouple protection tubes, as containers for molten metals in die casting, as flame-plated coatings on less refractory compositions to prevent erosion by hot gases, and as control rods and neutron shielding material in nuclear engineering, The Federal Bureau of Mines investigation of zirconium diboride started in 1950 at the Boulder City Nev,, Metallurgy Research Laboratory, Its purpose was to reduce the cost of raw materials for the production of zirconium diboride.

This report updates the Cuban nickel industry as a result of two visits : one at the invitation of the Cuban Ministry of Basic Industries in 1987 and the other as a consultant to the United Nations for the Cuban Laterite Project in 1989.

The technology for the extraction of zinc from zinc residues, such as zinc ashes, drosses and metallurgical flue dusts, by way of ammonium chloride solutions is well established, at least at the laboratory and bench scale levels. (3, 4) Zinc is soluble in ammonium chloride solutions in the form of zinc diammine chloride. Its solubility depends upon the concentrations and temperatures employed. The procedure and the equipment required are simple, and they can be applied either to small or large operations. As a by-product, zinc diammine chloride is produced with extremely low impurities in quantities which are stoichiometrically proportional to the zinc removed. The technology has been applied experimentally to galvanized steel residues. The dezincing results, including removal performance, energy and reagents required, and by-products are summarily presented in this paper.

The AK6 kimberlite is situated 25 km south of the Debswana Orapa Mine in Botswana and was discovered by De Beers geologists in 1969 during the follow-up of geophysical targets in the Orapa area. The kimberlite was not extensively pursued at the time as the initial bulk sampling indicated it to be of limited size and low grade, factors largely contributed to by the basalt breccia capping. Completion of high resolution integrated geophysical techniques and drill bulk sampling to depth recovered 97 tons of kimberlite during 2003 and 2004, which led to the increased size and grade estimates. Bulk sampling by Large Diameter Drilling (LDD, 23 inch diameter) commenced in 2005; 13 holes were drilled to a cumulative depth of 3,699 m and 689 carats of diamonds were recovered. In July 2006 the De Beers Mineral Resource Classification Committee classified these Phase I LOO results at a High Inferred level with an average grade of 24 carats per hundred tonnes (cpht) at a bottom cut-off of +1 mm, and a modeled average diamond value of 150 dollars per carat. A second phase of LDO drilling was initiated in 2006, and bulk sampling by trenching commenced in 2007 in order to deliver a resource estimate at indicated level. An Indicated Resource of 11.1 million carats at an average grade of 22 cpht was declared for the deposit mining lease application lodged in 2007.

A statistical comparison of the dust exposures of coal miners with identical occupations in Pittsburgh, Pocahontas, Freeport, and Kittanning seams was conducted. Results indicated that, in some cases, identical occupations have different dust exposures in different seams. For example, the continuous miner operator in the Pittsburgh and Pocahontas seams is exposed to more dust than the same man in the Kittanning seam, but the Kittanning seam has more dust along the haulage roads than the other seams. Also, average dust exposures for similar occupations in continuous and conventional mining operations are similar.

"The present paper summarises the results of gravity pneumatic concentration of a borax ore with 17.5 % B2O3. The sample was extracted from the Tincalayu ore deposit located in the Salta Province of Argentina.The applied methodology was based on a former study (Zuleta, 1985). It consisted of sample characterization by means of physical and mineralogical determinations, chemical analyses as well as pneumatic table concentration tests. In this, a simplified concentrating flowsheet was utilized.A concentrate with 30.6 % B2O3 and 74.7 % recovery was obtained. The recovery was 8.8 % less than previously reported and that was of 30.6 % B2O3 with 87 % recovery. Nevertheless, the simplified flow sheet presented processes only two granulometric fractions, - 6.4 mm + 0.3 mm and - 0.3 mm, compared to the three granulometric fractions used in the previous study: - 6.4 mm + 1.4 mm; - 1.4 mm + 0.3 mm and . 0.3 mm. This would simplify industrial implementation."

"New insights into the development of microstructure in sol-gel films have recently been revealed by several diagnostic techniques, including imaging ellipsometry, ""chemical imaging"" by fluorescent tracers, light scattering from capillary waves, and finite-element modeling. The evolution of porosity during the continuous transition from dilute sol to porous solid in restricted geometries such as films and fibers is becoming clearer through fundamental understanding of evaporation dynamics and capillarity.IntroductionWith sol-gel processing, the full flexibility of solution chemistry can be exploited to make ceramic films and fibers with well controlled compositional characteristics. No less important is the ability to tune porosity and connectivity for specific applications such as optical and electrical coatings and membranes. Since the chemical and physical factors that determine the microstructure are not entirely understood, new diagnostics applied to sol-gel processing are welcome.Sol-gel films and fibers are distinguished by processing that takes a sol through continuous stages of increasing concentration and connectivity of a solid precursor. The liquid carrier is usually volatile or, at least, volatilizable through heat treatment. During deposition through states of increasing solids concentration, this sol might gel, as in bulk sol-gel processing, however, the gel state may be a fleeting transient that quickly empties of liquid. Nevertheless, the structures formed in solution during this stage influence the structure of the final solid. In particular, porosity is likely to be a remnant of networks formed in the sol-to-gel transition. Here we report on experiments whose goal is to discover the factors involved with porosity development."

During the past several years, more frequent reference to Wollastonite has appeared in print, both in this country and abroad. The reason for this is the apparent growing interest in this mineral as it approaches commercial maturity. Twelve years ago, wollastonite was available in only limited commercial quantity. In 1933, a deposit in California was worked for a short time to provide a calcium silicate raw .material for the manufacture of mineral wool* It was not until the spring of 1953 that Cabot Corporation put into operation a modem commercial plant to produce this material in a variety of grades. These grades covered both a range of particle size and of particle shape. At that time, applications for wollastonite were largely speculative, although a few commercial applications in glass frits and welding fluxes did exist, For all practical purposes, it was a new material for which few commercial uses had been fully proven.

With the feature of finely-dissemination particle and complex mineral composition, oolitic hematite is considered to be the ore dressing difficult problem in the world. Series research on refractory oolitic hematite in Zhangjiakou Area are introduced as following: ore properties?technology mineralogy and mineral processing technology. The survey shows: with the fine grinding of the hematite to a fineness of -0.076mm 95%, obtaining iron concentrates grading 62.74% Fe at the recovery of 46.80% by high intensity magnetic separation- reverse flotation flowsheet; under the three stages intensity magnetic separation,four stages grinding and four stages gravity separation, getting the iron concentrates grading 61.09% Fe at the recovery of 45% using high intensity magnetic separation- gravity separation flowsheet; with roasting temperature of 800°C, time for 75~90min and ore-coal ratio of 11, gaining the iron concentrates assaying 62.74% Fe at the recovery of 87% by roasting- magnetic separation flowsheet. At present, this research is still doing for the target of raising the concentration recovery on the base of high grade concentrate. It is in the hope of fully utilizing the existing hematite resources in Zhangjiakou

The Particles Are Largely Spherical, And Can Be Seen In RLM Sections To Be Composed Of Franklinite, And Zincite, But They Show Significant Solid Solution With Each Other And May Contain Small Amounts Of Chromium. These Crystalline Phases Occur As Crystals And Skeletal Growths Within Ca-Fe-Si Glass. Because Chlorine Is A Deleterious Constituent In Recovered Zinc Products From EAF Dusts, Special Attention Has Been Given To Chlorine-Bearing Phases, And They Include Hydrophylite (Cacl2), Lime (Cao), And Organic Phases. A forecast of the consequences of our techniques and goods produced, at least a technical assessment will be demanded from us as an industry. The hydrometallurgical winning of zinc is therefore at a crossroads. New processes promise not only better economics, better maintenance of resources and simpler operation, but also more harmony with nature. Pressure leaching promises to eliminate roasting and thus one complete process step. The hematite process solves a difficult and always costly iron problem. HOA opens a possible road to a totally new ,generation of electrolysis. Zinc has a long tradition behind it. Its? importance is as great as ever-. There is still room for new production developments. In my estimation there are good chances for successful new techniques? which will benefit our whole industry. Zinc is a modern and forward-looking metal.

Lime made in a coal-fired, rotary kiln has two distinct parts: the interior of the pebble which constitutes about 90% to 95% of the mass, and the surface dust layer which is the remaining 5% to 10%. Uncalcined carbonate and impurities in the product may be present and will not contribute to the hydration reaction. Sulfur, in the form of calcium sulfate, inhibits the hydration reaction out of all proportion to its actual weigh-percent concentration (perhaps more than 100 times). If the stone contains dolomite, this will also inhibit the reaction as its rate of hydration may be nearly 3 orders of magnitude slower than that of calcium oxide. Early in the hydration reaction dolomite appears practically inert, but given sufficient time, it will hydrate. The heat of reaction is nearly the same as for calcium oxide, but the time necessary for complete hydration may be hours; whereas for calcium oxide it is only fractions of a second. The dust layer on the surface also inhibits hydration as it contains a collection of compounds which have low heats of hydration. This layer can tie up additional calcium and delay or prevent its reaction. In addition to these chemical processes, an important physical characteristic of the lime is its specific surface area. This is effected by the thermodynamics of calcination and the original stone grain chemistry. All of these factors are agglomerated in the gross slaking rate of lime. The total hydration of the chemical complex that is called commercial lime can be more easily understood by considering the individual reactions and combining them to form a more comprehensive picture of the situation. Calcium oxide and magnesium oxide hydrate similarly, differing only in their reaction kinetics. Dolomite, however, reacts differently than a simple mixture of calcium oxide and magnesium oxide as its hydration is strongly influenced by calcination thermo-dynamics and stone grain structure. Finally, the dust hydration and composition should be examined Understanding these reactions enables one to examine hydration reaction graphs with more insight into the factors which determine their shape.

FUSED quartz is a glass made by the fusion of nearly pure silica. Some confusion in terminology exists but in the trade today "fused quartz" generally refers to the perfectly transparent colorless product made from rock crystal whereas "fused silica" is a white, translucent product made from silica sand. Vitrified silica is the term preferred by purists for all quartz glass, but it lacks the definiteness of -the trade terms. Since the raw materials, methods of production, and properties of the finished products arc different for the two types, the trade terms are preferred. As fused quartz is amorphous, it-physical properties differ greatly from those of quartz crystal. Lacking crystallographic directions and having no piezo-electric properties, fused quartz. of course, has no value for the making of radio oscillator plates; but it does have other valuable and unique properties. Perhaps the 'best known and most useful properties are its extremely low coefficient of expansion and its ability to transmit short-wave ultraviolet radiant energy. Integrity issues for bored cast-in-situ piles have raised the need for the use of non-destructive tests to verify pile integrity and detect possible anomalies in installed pile sections that could adversely affect their serviceability. Integrity inspections performed after installations are often the most reasonable alternative available to assess the shaft quality. The two most common methods are pulse-echo from a small hand held hammer at the pile top, and cross-hole ultrasonic transmissions along the shaft between parallel sonic pipes. While different in technique, each method has its advantages and limitations. This paper emphasizes more on the degree of accuracy of low-strain pile integrity test by comparing the results with cross-hole sonic logging. Reliable data collection and interpretation by an experienced test engineer will reveal the integrity of the pile. Cross-hole sonic logging and low-strain pile integrity testing were both specified as quality control measures for a metro rail project in India. Both cross-hole sonic logging and low-strain pile integrity testing indicated defects in several bored piles. Also minor imperfections recorded by cross-hole sonic logging were observed in low-strain results. The observations of the two test methods are presented and compared for a better understanding of the importance of low-strain test results for any project. INTRODUCTION Cast-in-situ concrete piles are often chosen as a deep foundation alternative where challenging soil conditions exist. Although quality control measures are almost always taken during the installation of the piles, it is often difficult or impossible to confirm the integrity of the pile at this stage, particularly in wet conditions. Because of the relatively high probability of bored piles having anomalies, quality assurance of each bored pile is essential for each project.

This paper presents experimental data for the magnetic field produced by thermoelectric currents around uncracked hard-alpha inclusions in a Ti?6Al?4V specimen under external thermal excitation for different nitrogen content ranging from 1.6% to 5.9%. According to our preliminary results, the magnetic flux density measurements were found to be rather sensitive to changes in nitrogen content with the exception of the intrinsic material background magnetic signal that affected deeply the detectability of inclusions and imperfections in non-contacting thermoelectric measurements. Hopefully, these preliminary results can help identify a non-destructive test method that can detect material inclusions with a level of nitrogen that could be detrimental to Ti?6Al?4V alloy components.

RIGHT NOW the Canadian oil business is suffering from growing pains brought on by developments outside our borders. I would like, therefore, to place our industry in perspective for you in two ways. I would like first to describe it briefly and let you see it in relation to the world oil industry. Then I would like to bring it back and place it into perspective against a strictly Canadian background. Naturally, in such a discussion, it is necessary to use a certain amount of statistical material. I'll endeavour, however, to keep it to a minimum. Eleven years ago, before the discovery of Leduc, Alberta could boast of having 21,000,000 barrels of crude oil reserves. Five years ago we had 1,810,000,000 barrels. At year end, 1957, our remaining recoverable reserves totalled more than 3,000,000,000 barrels. In 1957, our potential production in Alberta reached an all-time high of 756,000 barrels a day. Unfortunately, our actual average daily production dropped from 393,000 barrels per day in 1956 to 376,000 barrels per day in 1957. And in 1958, to date, it has dropped sharply to around 300,000 barrels per day.

National Steel Pellet Company (NSPC) conducted pilot scale testing and computer simulation studies which indicates that the capacity of the secondary grinding mill could be increased and that concentrate grade improvement could be expected with improved classification in the grinding circuit. Based on these studies, a decision was made to modify one secondary ball mill line at NSPC to include both cyclone and screen classification with magnetic separation applied to the circulating load. This paper will briefly discuss the studies leading to the decision to modify the circuit, the design of the modified circuit and the initial start-up and operating experience.

Compressed- air blowers are frequently used both in large and small metal ines , not only as an aid to ventilation , but in some mines as a substitute for an dequate ventilation system . As a temporary fixture , blowers have their uses , but hey should never be used in lieu of a permanent ventilation system. A number Probably the most common error made in placing dependence on compressed- air lowers as an aid to underground ventilation is the tendency to over- rate their cooling efficiency . It is a very common but natural error to assume that compressed air which issues freely from a blower is of the same temperature as the compressed air which issues freely from the exhaust port of a rock-drilling machine . of readings were taken in different mines of the temperature of the rock- drill exhaust , of the compressed air flowing from the blowers , and of the surrounding air In both cases . In general , the temperature of the rock- drill exhaust was from 10 to 30 degrees below that of the surrounding air , in many instances being slightly below freezing , 32° F . The average temperature for a number of compressed-air lowers and for the mine air surrounding them is shown in Table I.
