"Dust abatement by water sprays involves the subprocesses of 1) collision between dust particles and water droplets, 2) adhesion of particles to droplets, and 3) engulfment of particles by the droplets. A review of the fundamental aspects of these subprocesses shows that collisions between particles and droplets are determined by aerodynamics and the size and surface charge of the particles and of the droplets. However, the adhesion and engulfment subprocesses depend upon the wetting characteristics of the particles. Although wetting agents (also known as surfactants) have been used as dust suppressants in several investigations, conflicting results are available regarding their effectiveness. In this paper, we show that these results can be explained if the effects of coal rank on surfactant adsorption and wetting characteristics are taken into account.The influence of several nonionic surfactants containing polyethoxy adducts on the wetting behavior of coal is presented. The wetting was determined by a modified Walker Test method, and contact angle measurements. The results show that the wettability of coal depends upon coal rank, structure of the hydrocarbon chain of the surfactant, and the number of ethoxy groups in the molecule.IntroductionDue to the inherent nature of the mining process, a large number of particles are generated, a portion of which becomes airborne to create dust. Dust can be aesthetically and environmentally unacceptable and it can also be explosive. Fine particles in the respirable size range ( < 5 urn) are con-sidered to cause lung diseases, namely, silicosis, pneumoconiosis, etc.(1) Several approaches to reduce dust in mine environments are practiced throughout the mining industry. These include decrease in generation of dust through improvements in mine machinery, ventilation (in which lower dust levels are achieved by dilution of contaminated air with clean air), and dust removal methods. Water sprays are most commonly used to remove dust par-ticles. Recently, scrubbers are reported to have been installed on mining machines to remove dust,(2,3) which also make use of water sprays to reduce dust."

During the past several years a new insoluble lead anode has been developed for copper electrowinning. The new anode consists of a rolled lead-calcium-tin alloy sheet attached to a slotted copper bus bar by a soldering process which produces a complete metallurgical bond between bar and sheet. The metallurgical bond greatly reduces the resistance between the bus bar and the lead sheet and the high conductivity does not deteriorate during the life of the anode. The rolled anode thins uniformly and does not suffer preferential grain boundary or internal corrosion commonly seen in cast anodes. The lead-calcium alloy containing a high tin content corrodes slowly because the rolling process produces a uniform, fine grained structure. The wrought product is very strong and ductile; and contains no internal defects, segregation, cracks, or pores which can reduce the life of the anode. Because the anodes corrode uniformly, a high percentage of the anode thickness can be utilized thus extending the life of the wrought anodes. The anode alloy composition which is stable only in wrought form, produces exceptional resistance to passivation during current interruptions. First introduced into liberator cells, the new electrowinning anodes have been specified as the anodes of choice for every new SX-EW tankhouse constructed in the last two years. This paper describes the new anode, its method of construction, service history, and how it differs from present copper electrowinning anodes.

ORE tests are made for the purpose of determining the correct methods of treatment for any particular ore. They should be conducted so as to insure that the results obtained in actual mill practice, on ore of similar grade and physical nature, will duplicate the results obtained in the test work. As the expenditure of many thousand of dollars may be involved in the building of the necessary mill, the testing of ores calls for extreme care and skill in handling laboratory machines, and a knowledge of actual practice to guard against the danger of obtaining results in test work that would be impractical to duplicate on a commercial scale. The importance of a correct sample of the ore is at once apparent. No matter with what degree of care the test 4rk is done, it loses its value when made on an unrepresentative sample. It is the first safeguard against future disappointments in the loss of capital and time. A number of failures in the past have been traced directly to faulty or lax methods in obtaining the ore sample.

The concept of a ‘critical velocity zone’ in the longwall goaf environment for the development of a spontaneous combustion event has been supported by numerical modelling. However, there is no experimental data available for Australian coals to show ventilation effects on the self-heating incubation behaviour of broken coal in the longwall goaf. A preliminary study using incubation testing has been completed on three high volatile bituminous coals (A, B and C) with R70 self-heating rate values of 3.86°C/h, 3.15°C/h and 2.09°C/h and moisture contents of 11.3 per cent, 3.9 per cent and 4.7 per cent, respectively. Mass to flow rates used in the adiabatic oven reaction vessel have been selected to be indicative of a sluggish, natural air leakage and medium ventilation environment. Under a sluggish ventilation flow rate all three coals incubate to thermal runaway in minimum time frames of 2.8–3.1 years, 34–42 days and 79–95 days, respectively. When the ventilation flow rate is increased to natural air leakage, coal A with the highest R70 value and highest moisture content selfheats to 28°C above mine ambient temperature before heat loss takes over due to moisture evaporation. However, both Coals B and C at this flow rate incubate to thermal runaway in a shorter time frame than under sluggish flow. At the medium ventilation flow rate, only Coal B incubates to thermal runaway, albeit after a significant extended period of time. These results show how important it is to determine the heat balance between the coal intrinsic reactivity (as indicated by the R70 value) and moisture content. The results also have implications for the possible location of the ‘critical velocity zone’ and subsequent hotspot development and migration.

The use of friction dampers are wide proposed for a variety of mechanical systems for which it is not possible to apply viscoelastic materials, fluid based dampers or others viscous dampers. An important example is the application of friction dampers in aircraft engines to reduce the blades vibration amplitudes. In most cases, friction dampers have been studied in a passive way, however, a significant improvement can be achieved by controlling the normal force in the contact region. The aim of this paper is to study four control strategies for friction dampers based on three different hysteresis cycles. The first control strategy maximizes the energy removal in each harmonic oscillation cycle, by calculating the optimum normal force based on the last displacement peak. The second control strategy combines the first one with the maximum energy removal strategy used in the smart spring devices. Finally, is presented the strategy which homogenously modulates the friction force. Numerical studies were performed with these four strategies defining the performance metrics. The best control strategy was applied experimentally. The experimental test rig was fully identified and its parameters were used for numerical simulations. The obtained results have shown the good performance for the friction damper and selected strategy, also, the agreement between numerical and experimental results.

"INTRODUCTION Shaft mines, coal and noncoal alike, have a common hoisting problem that remains largely unsolved - how to obtain a mechanical device that will suspend a cage or skip in a mine shaft if the hoisting rope should break or become detached from the cage or skip and that will function effectively under all conditions of service. Safety catches, or safety dogs, as they are commonly named, are installed on nearly all mine cages and many skips operating in American mines, but often, if the hoisting rope breaks, the cage or skip falls to the bottom of the shaft in spite of safety devices, causing much property damage and often fatalities.Available information relative to safety catches for mine cages and skips, desirable characteristics of safety catches and methods of testing safety catches to determine whether they are functioning correctly has been assembled in this publication for the convenience of those responsible for the safe operation of mine cages end skips and, more particularly, to focus attention on the need for a device that actually will stop and suspend a falling cage or skip under all conditions of use and do it without killing or maiming the occupants."

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the more significant coalbeds in Butler County, Pa. It is one of a series planned to determine which coals are suitable for producing metallurgical coke, either as mined or after beneficiation. More than 2 million tons of coal was produced in Butler County in 1958, of which about 25 percent was cleaned mechanically in four cleaning plants. Updating the 1942 coal-reserve estimates made by Ashley to December 31, 1958, more than 1,266 million tons of recoverable coal reserves remain in the county in beds that arc 24 inches or more thick. The Upper and Lower Freeport, Upper, Middle, and Lower Kittanning, Clarion, and Brookville beds were selected on the basis of production and estimated minable reserves. Sample locations were chosen after a study of the literature, conferences with mining engineers and mining company officials in the field, and examination of the available sites. Four samples each were collected from the Upper Freeport and Middle Kittanning beds, three samples from the Brookville bed, two, samples from the Upper Kittanning bed, and one sample each from the Lower Freeport, Lower Kittanning, and Clarion beds.

The accident-frequency rate for placer mining in 1942 is reported as 36.923 accidents per million man-hours worked. This figure places placer-mining accident frequency slightly higher than that given for quarrying-35.7-but considerably under the 78.0 for coal mining and 56.5 for metal mining.4 Placer mining is subdivided into four types of activity: Underground, surface, dredging, and hydraulicking. It is the purpose of this paper to present and discuss safety practices in dredging and hydraulic mining; therefore, the following considerations will be limited to these two types of placer mining.

The wastewater-treatment system of the Anaconda Mining Co., at its Butte, MT., operation has been physically and chemically characterize modeled on a computer and investigated with respect to alternate systems for economic heavy metal recovery. The system involves lime addition to a mixture of acid underground copper sulfide mine water, acid effluent water from the iron induced precipitation of copper from acid leach solution and basic suspensions of solid effluent from a concentrator plant. Experimental chemical analysis and predictive computer calculations shows that the monosulfllte and disulfllte complexes of transition metals (Iron II being dominant) and alkaline earths are 40% of the total dissolved metal load of both acid streams. The suspended solids (30% by weight) in the basic concentrator slurries are dominated by quartz and pyrite and also contain kaolinite muscovite, biotite and undissolved lime. The mixture of these three streams result&apos;s in major reductions in concentrations of Al, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Sir and Zn, and a pH >7 with calcium, sodium, potassium, and sulfate being the major dissolved ions. The treatment system has been simulated in the laboratory and accurately modeled on a computer. The computer program, an altered REDEQL-EPAK, is capable of accurately predicting the amount of lime required to reach a desired effluent water. Preliminary research has indicated the usefulness of electroprecipitation as a means of recovering the valuable metal load and providing an EPA acceptable effluent.

The primary responsibility for appraising the status of the country&apos;s mineral supply and for making appropriate recommendations within the executive branch and to the Congress has been pinned in the U.S. Department of the Interior. In fulfilling its role of governmental responsibility for raw-material supplies and their efficient utilization, the Bureau of Mines has analyzed the factors in current and future mineral supplies and demands and has developed 87 statements for specific commodities that assess the national position and problems for these metals, minerals, and mineral fuels. These statements, which constitute the chapters of this volume, are based on lire assumption that nearly till production and consumption of materials in the United States are to be by private individuals and organizations, in accordance with the Nation&apos;s devotion to a private-enterprise economy.

This report is concerned with the many sidelines that were investigated incidental to developing a process to produce ductile Zirconium by members of the staff of the Bureau of Mines laboratory, Albany, Oreg. The results of the main investigation, concerning the production of malleable zirconium by reduction of chloride with fused magnesium under helium, have been described in previous publications. These should be taken as a background to facilitate understanding of this work. Literature on the metallurgy of zirconium has been summarized in a separate publication (2), and references are given in this report only when new publications have to be considered or old ones stressed. Most of the observations described in this report can be applied to the problems involved in making titanium with virtually no change. In general, titanium is easier to reduce than zirconium, since its affinities are lower. Also, its chloride is easier to handle and keep clean because it is a liquid at room temperature.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, the University of Arizona, Sandia National Laboratories, and Zonge Engineering and Research Organization, Inc., conducted cooperative field tests of six electromagnetic (EM) geophysical methods to compare their effectiveness in locating a brine solution simulating in situ leach solution or a high-conductivity plume of contamination. The brine was approximately 160 m below the surface. The testsite was the University&apos;s San Xavier experimental mine near Tucson, AZ. Geo- physical surveys using surface and surface-borehole, time-domain electromagnetic (TEM) induction; surface controlled-source audiofrequency magnetotellurics (CSAMT); surface-borehole, frequency- domain electromagnetic (FEM) induction; crosshole FEM; and surface magnetic field ellipticity were conducted before and during brine injection. The surface TEM data showed a broad decrease in resistivity. CSAMT measurements with the conventional orientation did not detect the brine, but measurements with another orientation indicated some decrease in resistivity. The surface-borehole and crosshole methods located a known fracture and other fracture zones inferred from borehole induction logs. Surface magnetic field ellipticity data showed a broad decrease in resistivity at depth following brine injection.

Mineral deposits of western Utah and eastern and central Nevada have produced in excess of $8,500,000,000 since 1871. Through 1965, Bingham Canyon had produced over $4,600,000,000 and seven other camps over $100,000,000 each, principally from base metals. In addition, they yield iron and uranium ores; contain the world's largest beryllium reserves; and have produced the United States' most important gold discovery in 25 years. The area is famous for its silver production and its bonanza-type precious metal deposits, but such production has become unimportant. The area's greatest producers of metallic wealth are base-metal deposits in limestones and porphyry-type copper ores. In contrast to silver's decline, gold production has been rising-the result of by-product operations at Bingham Canyon. The area also contains gold deposits in which the gold is so finely disseminated it is not recoverable by panning. The area's gold ores frequently are associated with realgar, cinnabar, and carbon. The ore deposits generally are attributed to Tertiary intrusives,* but, at Mountain City, they may be related to Paleozoic volcanism. Mountain City has yielded rich chalcocite from quartz-pyrite-chalcopyrite bodies in siliceous sediments. Regional stratigraphy and structure are difficult to interpret, 69 per cent of the area being obscured by alluvium or volcanics. In general, central Nevada consists of chert, shale, silty sandstones, lavas, and pyroclastics; eastern Nevada and western Utah of many alternations of limestone, shale, and sandstone. Central Nevada has been structurally active since late Devonian. Although granitic stocks may have intruded eastern Nevada and western Utah prior to the Cretaceous, these areas remained quite stable until affected by the Laramide Revolution. Precambrian exposures, occupying 3 per cent of the area, have not been important hosts. However, the question is raised as to whether Precambrian carbonates, properly situated with respect to invading mineralizers, might yet prove to be important. This paper describes 16 precious metal camps, 6 limestone replacement districts, 2 silver-base metal vein deposits, and 9 miscellaneous types and discusses briefly the 11 * Some ores, as at Ely, are associated with intrusives of. Cretaceous age. major camps that are described in detail in this Volume.

[Available statistics show that the demands of the American chemical industry for sodium sulphate have been increasing slightly in recent years. The supply from domestic sources, particularly in the form of byproduct salt cake from the acid manufacturers, has been tending to decease due to the growing manufacture of synthetic acid. Both hydrochloric and nitric acids are being synthesized from their elements. The natural result has been that a smaller amount of salt cake is available. Simultaneously, the expansion of the Kraft-paper industry, especially in Lie South, has brought about greater demand for sodium sulphate in that section. This demand is being met by domestic byproduct salt cake, by imported German sodium sulphate made from potash waste liquors, and by favorably situated domestic deposits of Glauber salts and tile anhydrous salt, thenardite. No shortage of natural sodium sulphate exists in the United States, but usually such deposits occur in semiarid regions far re¬moved from transportation facilities and from markets. Moreover, the major portion of the natural deposits is Glauber salt or mirabilite (Na2SO4?10H20), which must be dried or dehydrated in order to most consumer requirements. The waters of hydration represents, roughly, 55 percent of tae total weight of the crude salts and therefore has a very important influence on transportation costs. In marry instances the cost of getting even the dehydrated product to market is the deciding economic factor. Therefore, the recovery or production of anhydrous sodium sulphate from plant-waste liquors or from natural brines of suitable composition might be economically feasible.]

H. Storch for a book entitled, ""The Chemical Utilization of Coal,"" edited by H. H. Lowry. This chapter covers the literature up to l9). In July 1948, the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama and mine operators, published Report of Investigations 4306, "A Combination Cleaning and Dewatering Process for Treating Fine &apos;Sizes of Coal, Preliminary Report In this report a new process, referred to as kerosene flotation; was described, and results of experimental work with the process Previous to the fall of 1947 were given, The contents of the report. were summarized on pages 19 and 20&apos; as follows: In coal-preparation plants using wet methods of cleaning, the most difficult problem is the cleaning and dewatering of the "fines" from about 10-Mesh to 0. A combination proceed is now under investigation that shows promise of practically and feasibly solving this problem. The process is similar to froth flotation, but a generous quantity of kerosene is used as one of the reagents, and the feed is from approximately 10-mesh to 0 considerably coarser than the usual froth flotation feed. The kerosene and the coarseness of the reed result in a floated product that, under certain circumstances, can be dewatered satisfactorily by a simple process of mechanical squeezing, Squeezing is accomplished by means of an ordinary conveying&apos; Auger-and trough assembly with a section of pipe easing at the outer end of the trough. The bottom of the trough and. casing is fitted with wedge-wire sections to permit escape of the water freed by the squeezing action of the auger. On account of the important role of the kerosene, the process has been referred to in this report as kerosene flotation. Up to now, the investigative work has been divided about evenly between the laboratory and commercial plants. Nearly all of the work has been done on sludges containing the solids from the underflow of dewatering screens. A few runs have been made on 10-mesh to 0: fines from raw coal, but in some of those runs the dewatering mechanism, failed to function.

1. The investigation shows that the Pewee, Big Mary, and Windrock are the most important beds in Anderson County. About 73 percent of the known recoverable reserves of coal in the county are in these beds, and from them comes 94 percent of the production. The remaining reserves tabulated in this report are in the Joyner, Jellico, Coal Creek, and Poplar Creek beds, and 6 percent of the county production comes from these beds. No production is being reported at present from the Jellico bed, although it was mined years ago. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, bared on a minimum thickness of 1/4 inches and on 1,800 short tons put acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 170 million torts as of January 1, 1953 Of this total, 155 million tons is in beds 2S inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to permit making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to they total estimated reserves.
