Controlled rolling followed by accelerated cooling, known worldwide as TMCP, aims to increase mechanical properties without toughness deterioration. The process principle is to promote the plate cooling with water jets along the range of the austenite transformation temperatures. The accelerated cooling process is only fully effective when controlled in an integrated manner, as it alone cannot ensure significant improvements in the final properties of steels. Plate surface quality depends on some parameters that must be controlled before the start of the plate accelerated cooling. Good flatness is essential to avoid irregular water accumulations during cooling. After the reheating process, the slab should have uniform temperature, uniform austenitic grain size and easily removable scale. The slab thermal and microstructural heterogeneities are inherited by the rolled plate and tend to increase further during the accelerated cooling. This results in flatness problems, high level of internal stresses and mechanical property variations. The descaling strategy is an extremely important factor and must be determined with great caution. It is important that scale thickness and distribution is uniform to ensure homogeneous cooling over the entire plate surface. Otherwise, there will be an uneven temperature distribution, which can cause serious problems of flatness, surface quality and mechanical properties.

An investigation of the production of iron in the blast furnace is obviously not an easy subject for research . Enough is known of the mechanical , thermal and chemical conditions existing inside the furnace to say certainly that they are complicated. Furnace operators have found that the process is sensitive to a number of known and to many unknown operating conditions . In order to form any conclusions of value , it seems necessary to collect a large amount of data taken with considerable care and accuracy. These facts make a blast furnace research difficult but not impossible . The most serious obstacle in attacking the problem comes from the fact that it is useless in the design and operation of the blast furnace to use the method of " trial and error , which has proved valuable in so many other industrial problems . The variables are so interrelated and are so dependent one on the other that the number of experimental combinations to be tried is enormous . There are certainly not less than twenty factors in furnace operation and design that are known to influence the results . This is apparent if it is remembered that a phrase like " size and shape of the furnace" includes height of the furnace , height , diameter and angle of the bosh , inwall batter , stockline diameter , and furnace volume ; and that a phrase like " chemical and physical properties of the fuels charged " includes size and shape of the lumps , density, porosity and strength of the coke , in addition to its chemical analysis . Let us suppose that we need choose for each of twenty factors one of two values , for example , suppose we must say only that the furnace shall be " tall " or " short , " that the bosh angle shall be " flat " OF "steep , that the ore shall be " coarse " or " fine , " or that the blast has to be "hot" or " cold , " the number of resulting combinations is more than one million . In putting twenty pennies on the table , either heads up or tails up, the number of permutations possible is the twentieth power of two , slightly more than one million. It is obvious , therefore , that some sort of mathematical relationship , a set of rules of thumb , laws , curves or the like , are needed . Whether the relationships , curves or formulas are derived from experiment , from theory, or from mere guess -work, makes no difference provided they agree with the known facts . If they do not agree with known facts , they are worthless no matter what their origin or how weighty the " authority" vouching for them. Few such relationships have appeared in blast- furnace literature , and it may be doubted whether such formulas can be discovered .

Fused - salt electrorefining has been successfully applied to the purification of vanadium metal . The electrolyte used in this refining technique was sodium chloride to which had been added 3 to 6 percent vanadium as vanadium dichloride . The average deposition current efficiency was 91 percent . Oxygen and nitrogen , the impurities in commercially produced vanadium metal , were reduced by two - thirds of the amount contained in the feed material . Hardness of the vanadium- metal product was reduced from an initial 97 Rockwell B ( RB ) to a minimum of 35 Rg . The reduction of these impurities markedly improved the plasticity of the final product obtained by melting the crystalline cell metal into small ingots . These ingots could be given a 99 - percent cold reduction by rolling before edge cracking appeared . Growing interest in high - purity vanadium and the industrial need for purer metals and improved alloys for use under high temperatures and high speeds have demanded the elimination and/or control of impurities . Accordingly, research to eliminate or control the undesirable impurities has been expanded .

It was Harold McMillan, Prime Minister of England 30 years ago, who used the phrase "The Wind of Change" to describe political events in Africa in his day. So well did this phrase capture the spirit of the time that it echoed around the world, and the echo has never stopped. Change is the constant factor in the society in which we live and everyone of us has had experience of the effect which it has had on our professional and personal lives.Change will not stop, it will continue at an increasing rate and the questions we must answer are how do we prepare ourselves to meet the challenge of future change and how do we take advantage of the opportunities which it will bring?It is these questions which I wish to discuss in this address.There is nothing new about change in the mineral industry, it has been happening for thousands of years and it will continue as long as civilisation exists on earth. One type of change is economic and we are all aware of the rises and falls which occur in the prices of metals and minerals (Figure 1). When these have happened in an orderly manner, and could be predicted and planned for, it has been possible to take advantage of the benefits and minimise ill-effects, but when they were sudden and precipitate, and could not be predicted, the consequences were serious. The extreme example, of course, was the oil price shock of the 1970s which had such disastrous effects on industry and society.Other types of change are social, cultural and political. They have all been important in recent years and will continue to be so in the future.But it is technological change which may well be the most important because its effects are profound and irreversible, and alter irrevocably the way in which we live. So in discussing the mineral industry in a changing world I will talk specifically about technological change.

"According to the legislation, valorization type, origin and characteristics of waste material, various standard procedures are available to evaluate environmental impacts. A Mn-rich slag was sampled from a metallurgical plant. After its characterization (elementary analysis and mineralogy), five standard procedures were carried out (i.e. TCLP, EN 12457-1). Each fixed parameter of the standards was systematically studied in a large range: pH, Liquid/Solid ratio, contact time. For example, EN 12457-1 led to a low ME mobilization, increasing with the L/S ratio, the contact time and an acidic pH. As a conclusion, the representativeness of the considered parameters and their potential variations are predominant to assess of the real environmental impact during slag reuse. Introduction Recent studies have been carried out about environmental impacts of waste containing metallic elements (ME) because of their potential mobility [1-7]. Indeed, slags are either dumped or valorized in various activities such as building materials. In order to assess environmental risk, various standard procedures are used depending on country legislation, origin of waste and valorization way. Results of leaching tests are linked either to special legislation (e.g. Dumping: EC, Council Decision 2003/33/EC, Construction products: EC, Council Directive 89/106/EEC) or to legal levels used in drinking water (Directive 98/83/CE) when leachates could migrate to groundwater. If ME in leachates are lower than drinking water authorized levels, the waste will be considered as non-hazardous. On the contrary, if the leachable amounts exceed them, the question about the risk has to be posed. Beyond the abundance of leaching tests available, variety of operational conditions induced by these regulatory tests does not make the choice easier. According to operational conditions induced, ME release could vary from one test to another one. ME concentrations in leachates depend on pH, Liquid/Solid ratio, contact time and particle size [3]. To highlight the importance of these operational parameters, potential risk for valorization of a manganese-rich slag was assessed by comparing several standard leaching protocols [8-12] with a global study dealing with the influence of operational conditions. For each regulatory protocol, the most influential parameters (L/S ratio, pH, particle size and contact time) have been studied in a large range."

Gold has been a metal of special importance for mankind for several thousand years. Its outstanding chemical resistance is an important property of this noble metal, but becomes a disadvantage when it comes to gold recovery. The established processes are based on highly aggressive and toxic reagents. Different alternative leaching reagents with a significantly lower toxicity proved to be promising alternatives in the last decades. Major research activities in this field focused on gold ores, so that leaching of secondary resources were not described sufficiently. Based on literature research and extensive experimental investigations, a reagent assessment was conducted for hydrometallurgical gold recovery from electronic waste. It was found that besides thiourea and halides, thiosulfate in particular represents an alternative of major relevance. A variety of different electronic waste (e-waste) specimens were investigated to identify suitable leaching conditions. As a result, an almost complete and selective gold recovery in less than 48 hours from different electronic waste types and components was achieved by thiosulfate leaching. Within the experiments conducted, it was found that the leaching behaviour of cyanide alternative lixiviants differ strongly from leaching of primary ores. The dispersion of mature fine oil sands tailings (MFT) by the addition of sodium lignosulfonate was studied using contact angle measurements, optical scattering, and particle size measurements. Lignosulfonate caused the release of residual bitumen to the slurry surface and settlement of fines. Dynamic contact angle by captive bubble measurements were carried out on bitumen to determine the effect of the dispersant on the wettability of bitumen. Lignosulfonate caused a change in the aggregation state of the MFT and increased sedimentation of particles, as indicated by optical scattering measurements. Zeta potential measurements indicate that this change was caused by an increase in adsorption of lignosulfonate onto particles, which caused improved settling of the colloid. Ultraviolet Visible (UV) spectrophotometry and organic carbon content measurements showed that only a small amount of the reagent remains in the aqueous phase of the tailings, which is critical for decontamination of recycled water. The plants integrated in the PhosAgro group of companies perform processes from scientific research to the project, from ore mining to shipment of fertilisers and feed additives to consumers. An extensive process chain maintains smooth interaction at all stages from research to production. As an example, the paper shows the revamp of two beneficiation plants (ANOF-2 and ANOF-3), requiring a comprehensive approach to task solving. The intention of the revamp was to increase the total yield of apatite and nepheline concentrate, taking into account the gradual decline in the quality of ore being processed and ensuring the yield stability of final products during re-equipment of the plants. At ANOF-3, the crushing and grinding cycle was modernised, the production of nepheline concentrate was implemented, and the capacity of apatite flotation, dehydration, and drying was increased. At ANOF-2 a new process chain was implemented for the production of apatite concentrate in workshops previously used for the production of nepheline concentrate. The main building was withdrawn from operation, where ore grinding, apatite flotation and apatite concentrate thickening had been carried out. The total increase in apatite concentrate yield at two beneficiation plants was 1.3 times. A further increase in concentrate production is planned. Chile is the main producer of copper in the world and lately the mining industry has suffered challenges due to the lack of water in the north of the country, along with the new policies of not using fresh water for the industry. This has prompted the use of seawater as an alternative source for mining. Several studies have been driven due to this new scenario, which have shown that seawater can be beneficial, if certain ions are removed from the process. This is the Mg that generates precipitates at high pH, that have been shown to make mining operations difficult. In particular, thickening operations are impaired by the presence of Mg ions, where aggregate formation and sedimentation decreases substantially. Our studies suggest the competence of the precipitates in adhering to the polyacrylamide (HPAM) flocculant and not towards the surface of the quartz minerals. This motivates the present work to use molecular dynamics to study the adsorption of a HPAM molecule on quartz surfaces and the surfaces formed by Mg precipitates. The surfaces are immersed in a saline solution or seawater that includes the HPAM molecule. Results are obtained by measure the adsorption frequency and duration. We obtained that the HPAM molecules are preferably absorbed on the surfaces of magnesium hydroxide. This gives us a good agreement with what is observed experimentally and strengthens the premise of the competition of hydroxide with the flocculant. A number autonomous operations is in place in several, mainly in fenced areas, where safety is assured by locking off the entire area for other traffic. However autonomy can be brought much further if functional safety is assured and a real mixed traffic of autonomous and manually operated vehicles is possible. MobileTronics has created a modular software and control framework for autonomous machines. The paper covers application examples in which the deterministic object recognition in combination with probabilistic algorithms and sensors is used as a basis for functional safe certification of mixed traffic autonomy.

Anionic surfactants, such as oleic acid and sodium oleate (OLE), and cationic surfactants, such as dodecyl amine-hydrochloride (DDA), are used as flotation collectors of spodumene. However, recovery is poor even if activating ions are used because gangue minerals are also activated. Some reports demonstrate that OLE/DDA mixtures act as a selective collector to enhance spodumene recovery. From mostly macroscopic tests, it has been argued that anionic OLE and cationic DDA form electroneutral complexes, which are adsorbed on the mineral surface through chemisorption; however, no molecular evidence has been presented. Therefore, the adsorption mechanisms of the collector mixtures remain mostly unknown. It seems necessary to first study the behaviour of these surfactants confined in salt solutions, to determine auto-associations when they are pure and cross-associations when mixed, the transition from monomers to micelles, and the structure of the micelles and the effects of pH, temperature and concentration. In this paper, ab initio calculations are first used to determine the surface charge distribution of OLE and DDA separately. Then molecular dynamics simulations are used to determine the conformation, aggregation, and diffusion of these pure and mixed surfactants in freshwater and saltwater with the ionic strength of seawater in a pH range. In particular, it is interesting to determine the various associations that result in mixtures of both surfactants and the impact of alkali and alkaline earth metal cations on the structures formedp. Cations influence the order of the structure and orientation of water dipoles, reducing the mobility of water, ions, and surfactant molecules. At present, over 85% of the world’s rare earth oxides are produced from the bastnäsite ores, found mainly in China. Meanwhile, the ion adsorption ores are the most important sources for heavy rare earth production. As the demand for rare earth materials in the world increases, other forms of rare earth deposits will become new potential resources of rare earth production in the future. In this paper, flotation performance of a steenstrupine ore from the Kvanefjeld deposit for rare earth recovery was studied through laboratory bench testwork. The effects of various factors including grinding size and collector dosage on recovery and selectivity of the selected rare earth elements, La, Ce and Y, were investigated. A rare earth concentrate with the grades of La 2.8 wt%, Ce 5.1 wt% and Y 1.0 wt% at recoveries of 80.5% La, 79.8% Ce and 55.3% Y was obtained in optimum conditions. O planejamento de cenários é uma ferramenta empregada como um mecanismo competitivo que entrega uma visão para um futuro passível de acontecer, baseado em fatos atuais e históricos. Adaptado para ser aplicado a resíduos industriais, este método de planejamento de cenários pode ser descrito em oito etapas. Neste trabalho é apresentada a 1ª etapa, que mostra o uso de pesos e critérios para definir as aplicações mais adequadas para a Lama Vermelha a partir de uma infraestrutura disponível localmente. A Lama Vermelha é gerada em larga escala pela indústria do Alumínio, somente no estado do Pará são gerados 5,4 milhões de toneladas anualmente, que impacta diretamente nos custos desta indústria em função de seu tratamento e estocagem. Os resultados guiam definições para as aplicações mais adequadas para a Lama vermelha, sendo destacado o emprego na fabricação de cerâmica vermelha e na produção do cimento.

A corrida pela alta produtividade, a demanda pela otimização de processos, que proporciona maior economia de combustível, impulsiona o desenvolvimento de estruturas veiculares de menor peso. O aço Bake Hardening (BH) é um aço de ultra baixo carbono estabilizado ao titânio, que apresenta átomos de carbono em solução sólida ocupando posições intersticiais. Este passa por um tratamento realizado durante o trabalho de pintura do veículo, permitindo que as chapas sejam endurecidas pelo efeito BH, conferindo resistência à endentação. Neste estudo um aço BH foi analisado em quatro condições de processo: laminação a quente, laminação a frio, recozimento e encruamento, com o objetivo de estudar os efeitos da variação destes parâmetros nas propriedades mecânicas do material, através dos ensaios de tração, obtendo resultados como valor de alongamento adquirido e dureza.

Atualmente, a exigência do mercado pela produção de aços de alta qualidade aliada a redução de custos, impulsiona maiores investimentos em novas tecnologias e a busca pelo melhor conhecimento dos processos que ocorrem na usina siderúrgica. O desgaseificador RH tem-se revelado um equipamento fundamental para produção de aços ultra low carbon, tipo cada vez mais solicitado pelos maiores consumidores de aço. Diante disso, este trabalho visa a elaboração de um modelamento matemático das curvas de descarburação e desidrogenação no RH thyssenkruppCSA. A geração dessas curvas possibilitou o estudo do comportamento do teor de carbono e hidrogênio durante o tratamento das corridas no reator. Os resultados demonstram que o teor de carbono médio obtido não está dentro do esperado, conforme previsto pelo comissionamento. No entanto, a desidrogenação pode ser considerada como satisfatória.

It’s expected that the world economy will face a stable and continuous growth in the demand of iron ore, reaching more than two billion tonnes per year within the next year. After decades exploiting resources with high content of iron ore, now the industry faces the challenge to exploit and beneficiate more complex ores.According to the industrial practice, the flotation technology is one of the most important and effective beneficiation processes to deal with low-grade iron ores around the world. However, even with this, it is still necessary to search for new processing routes or promote the optimisation of the existing circuits.The broad application of this technology is an outcome that deeply relies on the proper selection of flotation chemicals specifi cally designed for each system. New collectors are in continuous development as flotation performance significantly relies upon their optimisation.The reverse iron ore flotation in Brazil, mainly constituted by haematite and quartz, uses ether amines as collector for silica minerals and caustic corn starch as depressor for haematite. The process selectivity is highly impacted by the features of the etheramine, such as:• mono or di-etheramine,• neutralisation degree,• chain length,• branched or linear chain,• the flotation pH, and• the size distribution of the flotation feed.This paper describes the experience obtained from laboratory and industrial trials on different ores, conducted to improve the selectivity and recovery in the reverse iron ore flotation by selecting the required collector for low-grade ores.

In the treatment of any illness the early diagnosis is of very great importance . This is especially true in cases of carbon monoxide poisoning , whether acute or sub-acute in character. A diagnosis of CO poisoning is usually made from a correlation of the history , the possible place of exposure , and the symptoms produced . This , however, is not positive evidence because CO often is present in unsuspected places and can be absent in suspected places . Also , the symptoms of this type of poisoning are common to other causes . In many such cases the correct diagnosis may be very difficult , if not impossible by this method and as a result little or no treatment is given . Sub- acute cases , those in which the subject is exposed to concentration sufficient to cause only headaches , malaise , feeling of weakness and dizziness , may be incorrectly diagnosed and as a result , improperly treated . Probably the best method of diagnosis is by examination of the subject's blood . Many methods for the detection of CO in the blood have been developed , but owing to their various individual disadvantages have never come into common usage . Some of the quantitative methods are satisfactory with regard to accuracy but require elaborate and expensive apparatus , special technique and training, or are too delicate and cumbersome for field use . It is of vital importance in all industrial and domestic accidents occuring at places where CO might be suspected or where the symptoms are typical of CO poisoning that a qualitative and preferably a quantitative determination be made the extent of poisoning being of importance in deciding whether CO was the direct or contributary cause) to show the presence or absence of 0. This is indeed essential from a medical standpoint as it aids in prescribing treatment and from a legal standpoint to insure justice in the claims that are often unjustly decided for want of positive evidence.

Fires in metal mines have resulted in some of the worst disasters in American mining history insofar as loss of life is concerned. One fire caused the death of 163 miners and individual less spectacular fires have cost the lives of scores of workers. Metal mines are often very deep, and the men working on numerous levels far removed from direct communication with the surface. In many instances they cannot be warned quickly of an emergency or a mine fire by telephone or other usual method of communication, or by messenger, flashing lights, gongs, sirens, or whistles. Telephones are not paricularly effective as a means of warning unless placed at all strategic points and with attendants always on duty; though telephones well placed have a definite value in any well-pla.mied emergency procedure in mines of all kinds. Messengers are slow and men working in remote parts of a mine would not receive a warning quickly enough. Most metal mines are not electrically lighted, except at or adjacent to shaft stations and in principal haulageways, and this limits the effectiveness of flashing lights. Electric gongs and sirens or whistles have been tried as warning signals, but the sound is quickly deadened and does not travel upward into the stopes, especially those of an extensive volume. Shutting off the compressed air is by no means satisfactory as a warning, as not infrequently it is stopped accidently, so that it loses its value as an alarm. The introduction of water into compressed air lines is undesirable as a fire warning and necessitates considerable care, especially in deep mines; pressure-reducing valves must be provided to reduce pressure that otherwise would break connections or split the pipe. A quick, effective method of warning miners underground of the existence of an emergency requiring them to leave the mine immediately, such as a fire on the surface or underground, is provided by the introduction of stenches in the compressed-air lines. Much has been written and said concerning tables of permissible or maximum allowable concentrations of various toxic substances in air, but not enough attention has been given to their limitations and how to use them intelligently . There is a tendency to place too much reliance on figures , with little or no consideration of their real meaning . The repeated publication of a figure often adds significance to it far beyond that intended by the original author or publisher . How are these figures referred to as "maximum allowable concentrations " established? What is their real meaning? To answer these questions it is necessary first to define maximum allowable concentration . The usual definition is somewhat as follows : "The average concentration to which an industrial worker can be exposed for 8- hours daily for an indefinite period without injury or occupational disease . This definition is made up of the following items : ( 1 ) Average concentration, ( 2 ) 8 - hour day , ( 3 ) indefinite exposure period , and ( 4 ) lack of injury or occupational disease . There is some controversy regarding item ( 1 ) , items ( 2 ) and ( 3 ) are usually though not invariably accepted , and there is definite disagreement regarding the interpretation of item ( 4 ) . . To reach a more satisfactory interpretation of maximum allowable concentration , attention is directed to ( 1 ) the development of tables of maximum allowable concentrations , ( 2 ) criteria on which limits are based , and (3 ) methods used to obtain data on which limits are based .
