Gasoline has become of such commercial and military importance that it is now practically indispensable. This product is of special interest because, in addition to realizing its value, the Nation is learn- ing that the raw materials from which gasoline is obtained are not unlimited. ACTIVITIES OF THE BUREAU OF MINES IN PROMOTING EFFICIENCY IN THE PRODUCTION AND UTILIZATION OF GASOLINE. The Bureau of Mines has directly and indirectly worked for the conservation and efficient utilization of this important product. Some of the bureau's activities have been along lines widely different from those reported in this bulletin. The work of the bureau toward the increase in efficiency of processes for the production and refining of crude oil is too well known to need mention here. Another line of activity in which the bureau has engaged is the collection and publi- cation of statistics on refinery operations. Finally, as immediate preparation for the present bulletin, two surveys of the gasoline mar- keting situation have been made. The primary object of this bul- letin is to make available to the public information obtained in con- nection with these surveys. PURPOSE OF THE GASOLINE SURVEYS OF 1917 AND 1919. Shortly after the United States declared war on Germany the bureau collected gasoline samples in the retail market throughout various parts of the country. Information regarding the sources of these gasolines and the details of marketing them was obtained, and they were subjected to analytical tests which furnished conclusive informa- tion regarding their properties. The information obtained through this survey proved of inestimable value both to the bureau and the United States Fuel Administration, particularly in drawing up speci- fications and in ascertaining the best means of obtaining supplies of particular types of gasoline that were needed. A similar and more extensive survey was made in the months of April and May, 1919, in order to obtain data needed for the revision of the Federal motor gasoline specification. The specification adopted during the war had been the subject of numerous complaints, and it seemed desirable to determine whether or not these objections were valid before attempting revision.

Mercury has been used by mankind since prehistoric times. It has been, and is now, widely used in industry and medicine and has unique properties which make direct substitution difficult or impossible. At present its principal uses are for electrical apparatus, control instruments, electrolytic soda preparation, mildew-proofing paints, pesticides, and medical and dental preparations. Deposits of mercury are less common than those of other base and precious metals, but some of the deposits are very large and have been ample to meet the world's past demands. The price of mercury has had many sharp fluctuations, but in general, the limited number of producers has resulted in a more stable price structure than that of many other commodities. The United States has been one of the main producers of mercury, and from 1850 to 1961 produced 3,247,704 flasks. Yearly production since World War II has varied from 4,535 to 38,067 flasks. An estimate of domestic resources of mercury producible at various price ranges was prepared for each mercury mine by combining specific knowledge of mercury mineralization with estimates of potential, based on geologic information and past production history. The sum of the individual estimates for each price range is shown in a table. A parallel estimate of nationwide production potential was made from a study of past price and production relationships. These were analyzed by plotting yearly production figures against the previous year's price, expressed in dollars of constant purchasing power. An equation was fitted to the data by mathematical means and was used to extend the curve into areas of higher than historic prices. Potential production rates at various price levels were taken from this graph. The estimated yearly production rates were used to make an estimate of total potential based on the premise that production rates and reserves have a proportionate relationship. The rate of developing mercury reserves during the period from January 1944 to January 1962 is considered, and it is shown that if this rate can be continued, the mercury resources of the United States, at a constant dollar price of $500 per flask, are adequate to support a production of 60,000 flasks per year for 30 or more years. This publication contains a history and description of the mercury industry in every State which has had production and individual descriptions of all mercury properties which have reported significant production. Accompanying tables give the important facts about all known mercury occurrences.

"The grain refinement and mechanical properties of 6061 aluminium alloy produced by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) have been analyzed in this present study. A innovative triple shear ECAP die was developed for the processing.It was observed that the grain refinement takes place for greater number of passes. It was also found that reducing the process temperature gives fine grain and high microhardness and hence improved propertiesIntroductionTechnological changes in manufacturing industries have depended heavily on development in materials processing and process technologies. Modem industries need high performance materials for severe service conditions. Hence, it is necessary to improve required material properties to achieve better performance and greater service life. As mechanical properties of the materials strong! y depend on grain size ( d) - Hall-Petch relationship [ 1-4], the ultrafine grained (UFG) materials offer superior mechanical properties based on the above relation.Synthesising massive nanocrystalline materials presents a challenge to basic research as well as to application-related processing efforts. Production of ultrafine gram microstructures in metals and alloys having different crystal structures but always an initially coarse microstructure using severe plastic deformation can significantly enhance the physical and mechanical properties of materials. Severe Plastic Deformation (SPD) is an efficient method to induce ultra fine grained structure in materials by deforming it to large strains. Traditional techniques for introducing deformation of higher strains, such as forging, extrusion, drawing or rolling do have the inevitable limitation on required equipments of exerting enough load or pressure to cause uniform nanometer level grain refinement."

Can the United States mining industry achieve its long-stated goal of zero fatalities ? and what will it take to do so? Does it require new laws and regulations, as some propose, and a continuation of the commandand- control model that has been born out of more than 40 years of regulation and enforcement under the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1969? Or, is it time to consider a new model to manage safety and health and drive continuous, sustained improvement? These are questions that many are debating as mine safety performance, while improved, appears mired in a trough where improvement followed by declines seems to have become the rule rather than the exception. Without doubt, U.S. mines have made significant progress in safety performance during the last four decades, yet the stalled decline in fatality numbers, the industry?s report card of its success or failure, has led some to question whether the industry will achieve zero fatalities in U.S. mining by relying solely on the Mine Act?s framework and implementing its regulations. These are questions the CEO-led task force, set up by the National Mining Association (NMA), considered as it sought to identify impediments to zero fatalities posed by the current regulatory regime. Out of that effort came CORESafety, a common safety and health framework that relies on a management system approach to improve safety and health performance. The goal of CORESafety is to achieve zero fatalities and a 50-percent reduction in the rate of injuries in U.S. mining within five years ? 0:50:5. CORESafety is built on the plan-do-checkact model, which has been successfully deployed by industries, mining and nonmining alike, to drive continuous improvement in safety and health performance. The improvements in safety performance that can be achieved by shifting from a command-and-control regulatory approach to a risk-based systems approach built on the plando- check-act model have been documented in numerous industries. For example, the United Kingdom quarrying industry (Fig. 1), not satisfied with the number of reportable accidents being experienced 1995-2000, established a hard target of a 50-percent reduction in the number of reportable accidents during the period 2001- 2005. Having met this target, the industry then established a further target zero for the period 2006-2010. The mechanism to achieve these reductions? The plan-do-check-act model.

The evaporation of crude oil without doubt causes one of the largest single losses to which the oil is subjected after it is taken from the ground. The few days during which crude oil is stored on the lease before being taken by the pipe line, causes an aggregate loss per year from evaporation estimated at 122,100,000 gallons of gasoline in the Mid-Continent field alone. This has a value, at 22 cents per gallon, of $26,880,000 and represents about 3 per cent of the total gasoline produced in the United States from all fields and all sources. THE plant is one of the usual type of Mond plants, and contains no new features worthy of comment. A brief description of the process, however, with a few remarks on the working of the plant, may prove of interest.Producer gas is made by passing a mixture of air and steam through incandescent carbon contained in a furnace called a producer, which, in the Mond type, is a cylindrical casing of steel plate, lined with firebrick, and fitted at the lower end with sloping fire-bars'. Coal crushed to an even size (about 2-in. gauge) is elevated to bunkers over the producers, from which it is fed into a measuring hopper on each producer.The hopper is a cast-iron cylinder fitted with a swing cover at the top and a bell valve at the bottom, worked by a lever and balance weight. When a charge of coal is run from the bunker into the hopper, the cover is closed, and the bell valve is lowered, allowing the coal contents to drop into the producer. Thus no gas can escape from, or air be admitted to, the producer during the process of charging. The hopper discharges its coal through a steel pipe-shaped container called the bell, which projects about 9 in. through the roof of the producer. The function of the bell is to spread the coal evenly over the fire, and supply coal to any portion of the fire as it settles.

It is stressed ·that applications of electromagnetic and ultrasound energies, and control of flow fields rate required to create the highly efficient mixing I separation reactor.IntroductionIn recent years, it seems that the research and development in the field of steelmaking has shifted its emphasis to the solidification I ingot-making process in which continuous casting plays the leading role. From a long-range point of view, however, the need for continual development of the refining process will probably increase but is very unlikely to decrease. In order to meet such demands, it is required that problems and issues of the present process should be clearly grasped and that there must be rapid progress in process elements, such as highly efficient mixing and separation of different phases.Applications of electromagnetic and ultrasound energies and flow field control will become important options for resolving the above-mentioned problems. By efficiently and skillfully incorporating these new technologies into high-efficiency mixing/separation reactors, the innovative refining process will be established in the early 21st century."

"Concentration, ore-dressing, or the dressing of minerals are common terms used in metallurgy and indicate processes of separating valuable minerals from worthless gangue. It is understood, of course, that the products from such processes, being separated from the various minerals and gangue, are ready for commercial sale or for further treatment by smelters and refineries.Gravity concentration takes advantage of the difference in specific gravity of the various constituent minerals and gangue of waste material in the ore. The two most common forms of concentration by this means are jigging and table concentration. Jigs usually are used in the separation of relatively coarse material and the tables for the finer material, the line of division in general being about 20 mesh.There are mar factors to be considered .before a decision can be made as to what method would be best adapted to the successful treatment of an ore and only by careful experiments can this be determined. Among the important factors to be considered are. The nature of the minerals present, their physical and chemical relations to the gangue material, and the gangue material itself. Perhaps the most important is the number of minerals present and their relation to each other.Metals exist in ores in three principal forms -- sulphides, oxides or carbonates, and native. Concentration by gravity methods is in general best suited to sulphide ores, although in some places considerable success has, been obtained in the concentration of oxide ores by gravity methods."

Longwall mining is a form of underground mining and the principal extraction method for underground coal mining in Australia. The method is used in the mining of both thermal and metallurgical coal. The primary market for thermal longwall mines is that of the export market where price is governed against the Newcastle Thermal Benchmark index (globalCOAL, 2016).Australia’s thermal coal export outlook is considered moderate due to slower demand from major importing countries, as well as slowing domestic production. However, ‘Australia is projected to increase its share of world thermal coal exports and become the world’s largest exporter over the medium term as lower prices, increased domestic use and infrastructure constraints limit growth from other key suppliers’ (Office of the Chief Economist (OCE), 2016, pp 25, 58). On the contrary, and as a result of current global coal price trends, the basic economic principles of underground longwall coal mining are heavily stressed. From a life-of-mine perspective, influencing return on investment is at its greatest during project evaluation and execution. "Processing of the tailings accumulated over the lifetime of Madneuli Copper Concentrator is an opportunity to extract additional salable copper and gold products. This paper presents a pre-concentration process for the valuable components (copper and gold) of the accumulated tailings. The developed process makes it possible to obtain a copper pyrite concentrate with a yield of 14.05%, copper grade of 1.36%, and recovery of 83.22% containing 3.78 g/ton of gold at a recovery of 84.31%. The bulk concentrate is produced by a combined process bringing together selective flotation to produce salable copper concentrate and hydrometallurgical processing of the selective flotation tailings to recover gold. KEYWORDS: FLOTATION, ALBION PROCESS, LEACHING, COPPER CONCENTRATE, SELECTION Madneuli Copper Concentrator, Georgia, was put into operation in 1975. Over its lifetime, 40 mn tons of tailings have been accumulated at the tailings storage facility (TSF). Sampling of the TSF has indicated that the average copper and gold grade is 0.23% and 0.56-0.65 g/ton, respectively. Accordingly, the TSF can be classified as a technogenic reserve. This paper discusses pre-concentration of valuable components using flotation, followed by processing of the bulk concentrate in the Albion process. Mineralogical analysis of the accumulated tailings showed that the main ore mineral is pyrite (11.71%). Copper minerals are mainly represented by chalcopyrite (0.7%). The main nonmetallic mineral is quartz (67.3%); sericite, chlorites, etc. also occur. Pyrite is present both as liberated grains and intergrowth. The absolute majority of copper minerals are found as intergrowth with pyrite, less often with quartz. Ore minerals are slightly oxidized. Chemical analysis results are shown in Table 1. Particle size distribution shows that the size class -0.2 mm - 0.045 mm has the highest grade of 0.85 to 0.97 g/ton of gold. Size class +1.25 mm has the lowest grade. Based on the chemical and mineralogical studies and particle size distribution, an optimized process was developed for pre-concentration of the valuable components prior to hydrometallurgical processing. Several gravitation, direct selective, bulk, and bulk selective flotation processes were trialed. (1,2)"

Based on the anion coordination polyhedron growth unit theory, the polymorph transformation mechanism of antimony white (Sb2O3) in hydro-process was investigated. The new findings had been verified in the commercial-scale test and it was shown that adding a small amount of tartrate ions was economical and effective for polymorph transformation of antimony white in hydro-process.

Nowadays the optical sorting of industrial minerals is one of the most important processing methods which has cost efficient production possibilities. This method is used for industrial and raw materials that have different colour and brightness features. Initially this technology is used for sorting of foodstuffs and recovered glass, but for a long time also as physical mineral processing method for both industrial minerals like: limestone, marble, talc, basalt, flint, quartz and secondary raw materials like: building rubble, refractory materials, glass, plastic and household waste. In this study via optical sorting the separation of quartz out of a flint mix, which consists of the particles with different colors and brightness, is aimed. Experiments are performed on an optical sorting machine named CombiSense® 1200 at the institute of ?Aufbereitung mineralischer Rohs-toffe? RWTH Aachen. This automatic picking device was developed by the company ?Separation Systems Engineering (SSE), Wedel?. Hand picking method is used for product analysis and the efficiency tables are prepared on every step accordingly. This process enables to reach quartz products with purity up to 100%.

The techniques for direct initiation of detonation, developed by the Bureau of Mines, have been applied to gaseous mixtures of oxygen with methane, 'thane, propane, butane, or hexane. An exploding wire was used as the initiation source to determine minimum stored electrical energies required to effect detonation of mixtures between one-half and two times the stoichiometric fuel ratios. Detonations were obtained in the most easily initiated mixtures of ethane, propane, butane, and hexane for initiation energies between 24 and 33 joules at 1 atm and 28-43 joules at 0.5 atm initial pressure. Methane mixtures, at 1 atm, were not observed to detonate when initiated with up to 484 joules.

This paper deals with application of Super Detox? stabilization technology to the treatment of electric arc furnace dust (US-EPA listed hazardous waste KO61 ). The process has been used on approximately 170,000 tons of electric arc furnace dust. In addition to the nearly four years of commercial experience at Sterling, Illinois, the process is now being permitted for application at two other locations. The process was originally developed by the Bethlehem Steel Corporation and then further improved by Conversion Systems, Inc. (Bethlehem Steel's Licensee). The treatment process offers many unique bases for its selection, including: A) Low cost compared to the treatment alternatives; B) Lowest available TCLP leachate levels for any process treating K061. Many other processes leave some residue that represents a disposal requirement, although often not addressed; C) Produces minimized final waste disposed, including the fact that the total volume of dust generated and less than the volume occupied by the residue slag from HTMR; and, D) Opportunities for the beneficial utilization of part or all of the waste stream through the development of chemical and physical characteristics. Each of these aspects will be specifically discussed in the paper, including that status of the operations now under permit.

Hot pressing processes are widely used to shape metallic, ceramic, and glass components. The process is an essential step in manufacturing ceramic fibre-glass matrix composites. The paper describes the use of computer simulation by the particle method, to the analysis of the deformation and flow of glass during hot pressing. The hot glass is represented by an assembly of interacting particles which deform in response to the applied pressure. The results, which should be regarded as complementary to continuum-based studies, provide useful insight about the hot pressing process.

"This paper describes a medium-sized copper mine's results in making innovations and changing operational practices to combat increasing expenditures due to higher labour and supply costs, extended workings, scarcity of experienced manpower and problems created by deteriorating ground conditions.OPEMISKA COPPER MINES (QUEBEC) LIMITED is located at Chapais in the Chibougamau area, in central eastern Quebec, approximately 300 miles north of Montreal and 150 miles north west of Lake St. John. The latter area, developed by lumbering and farming, has supplied the majority of the employees, who, with training and experience and a desire to work and improve themselves, have become the backbone of the Company's 600 personnel.Opemiska began production in 1954 at a rate of 400 tons per day, using diesel power and road transportation. The rate was progressively increased and, by 1959, with hydro-electric power and rail transportation, the mine had reached its present production rate of 2,000 tons per day. It has produced concentrates containing over 430 million lbs of copper."

The laboratory tests indicated low permeability but as I said, as a rule, the permeability in the field has been found to be higher. A high permeability has also been found when doing back calculations of rates of settlements in different cases. But as I also said, there's a need for further studies in this area.
