Titanium dioxide (TiG ) is produced 2 commercially by two methods generally referred to as the "sulfate" route and the "chloride" route. The SCM Corporation, in supplying 15% of the world's demand for TiO 2, uses both of these processes. Of the two processes the sulfate route is generally regarded as the older and more established technology. Worldwide the sulfate route accounts for some 70% of total Ti02 production. However, in the U.S.A. the chloride process accounts for 80% of production. The processes vary in chemistry and raw material requirements. In the "sulfate" process finely ground ilmenite or titanium slag is digested with sulfuric acid to produce a porous "cake" vrnich is extracted with water and recovered liquor. The solution is treated with scrap iron to reduce any ferric ions to the ferrous state which is then crystallised and removed as ferrous sulfate heptahydrate. The liquor is concentrated by evaporation and hydrolysed to form the insoluble hydroxide which is filtered and washed free of impurities. This is converted to the dioxide by calcination at 800 - 1000¦C and milled to break up any aggregates. The "chloride" process uses a higher quality feedstock of natural or synthetic rutile and/or high grade titania slag. The feedstock is mixed with ground high-purity coke and chlorinated at 950¦C in a fluidised bed. The resulting crude titanium tetrachloride is purified by distillation and chemical treatment. The purified titanium tetrachloride is burned with oxygen or oxygen enriched air to give titanium dioxide and chlorine, which is recovered and recycled to chlorination. Titanium dioxide pigment from both processing routes undergoes similar finishing techniques. It is subjected to further stages of wet and dry milling, then coated with layers of inorganic oxides in order to enhance its properties for specialist applications.

A. 0. ASHMAN, Palmerton, Pa. (written discussion *.).-Mr. Newcomb's paper has interested me greatly, as I have had numerous experiences along this line. I do not think enough emphasis can be put on his warn-ing to keep platinum couples free from contact with quartz tubes, as silica shows a tendency to alloy with platinum to a surprising degree even at low temperatures. I have frequently had evidence of silica contamination in a perfectly good tube, in which there was seemingly no possibility of a reducing atmosphere. This is rather important as it seems to be common practice to insulate, as well as protect, the wires by means of- capillary silica tubing, thus allowing the entire wire to be in contact with the silica. The best way to mount a couple in a silica protecting tube is by means of double-bore porcelain insulating tubes, the protecting tube being slightly longer than the couple so as to leave a space between the couple and the end of the tube. In this way there is no possibility of contamination from silica. In no case should silica capillary tubes be used to insulate platinum wires. Mr. Newcomb states that there is still much to be desired in pyro-meter protecting tubes; this is in keeping with my experience. From a practical standpoint there is not a satisfactory pyrometer tube on the market for high temperatures; with all clue respect to the many improve-ments and good work recently done in this line. I believe that the whole future development of pyrometry is dependent on the development of suitable refractories. With suitable refractories, for example, Darling's1 work with liquid couples could be developed to a practical basis, making possible the use of base-metal couples to replace platinum.

DISCUSSION, M. Cohen presiding J. W. Christian (The Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory, oxford, Englandl)—I was very interested in Dr. Bowles' results on the suppression of the transformation by solid films of alcohol or propane. The transformation in cobalt, which is also martensitic, can be explained by a mechanism involving the reflection of "half dislocations" down a series of atomic planes.* This reflection process is similar to that considered by Frank13 for plastic deformation on a single slip plane and, as he pointed out, reflection would be impossible if the metal were immersed in a liquid of higher density. It seems possible that solid films of alcohol have a similar effect on the lithium transformation. Reflection should also be possible at a grain boundary, though a higher kinetic energy of the dislocation, and hence a lower temperature would be required. As Dr. Bowles used coarse grained polycrystalline speci- mens, transformation on cooling should still have occurred in grains which did not form part of the outside (free surface) of the metal. This may account for the X-ray lines of the low temperature phase which were found. There is thus the interesting possibility that in a polycrystalline specimen a liquid, or in some cases a solid, film of material of or or higher density will lower M,, while in a single crystal it should suppress the transformation completely. In the case of cobalt it is necessary to find a dense liquid which will not react with the metal at the transformation temperature. The most promising liquid appears to be pure lead, but it is very difficult to devise a method of investigating whether or not this does suppress the transformation.

Man is a short time resident of the planet Earth. He does not have the memory to fully comprehend just what is going on. His span of knowledge can be related to the life of the world to see that this is the case. A museum at Grand Canyon features a geologic clock that compresses Earth's age of 4.5 billion years into 24 hours. Man's estimation of the earth's age has changed radically in the past half century. In 1930, one prominent geologist asserted that the age of the Earth was ". . . at least 600 million years." Later, physicists used radioactive clocks to conclude that the Earth's age was 1.6 billion years. More recently, geologists have found rocks in northwestern Australia estimated to have formed 4.5 billion years ago. As we learn more about what is underfoot, the estimate of Earth's age might change again. The Grand Canyon's 24 hour clock shows that the dinosaurs were the dominant life form for 165 million years. Then an event occurred that wiped them out about 65 million years ago. The prevailing theory is that an asteroid struck the Earth and generated enough dust to wipe out the vegetation upon which most dinosaurs fed. During Earth's existence, there have been at least 12 such mass extinctions - the worldwide disappearance of diverse animal groups. On a planet that has been around for 4.5 billion years and that may continue to exist for another 4.5 billion, it seems reasonable to expect that further mass extinction's will occur. According the Grand Canyon's 24hour clock, the 165 million year reign of the dinosaurs amounted to about five minutes. On that 24 hour clock, the world has been dinosaur free for almost two minutes.

SCHLESINGER,* Denver, Colo.-Two problems are of great interest to the radium manufacturer at the present tine: The first is to perfect a process, more efficient and more economical, which is capable of treating a greater variety of ores. . Practically all the radium now manufactured in the United States is extracted from carnotite ores and these vary a great deal according to their location. The amount of sulfates contained in the ore is of particular importance, and any straight acid-leaching method, such as developed by the Bureau of Mines, becomes prohibitive when the ore contains more than 0.5 per cent. of sulfates, as the sulfates go into solution and naturally precipitate the radium as insoluble radium sulfate. Since the amount of ore obtained from any one claim is usually comparatively small, it is necessary to work a number of claims in different localities, and a process, in order to be commercially satisfactory, should handle all of these ores. In other words, it would be entirely unprofitable for radium manufacturers to employ any process which cannot treat any but sulfate-free ores. He must deal with carnotite containing appreciable amounts of sulfates, and must be able to work this in with the other ores. Carbonaceous ores from certain sections in Utah; which are known to contain as pinch as 1.0 per cent. and more of volatile matters, are prone to a, nitric acid-leaching process. The second problem relates to the treatment of concentrates. There is no doubt that a very large amount of low-grade ore, containing less than 0.75 per cent. uranium oxide, is available. Based on the analysis of issues associated to conflicts between communities and mining companies in Mexico, this paper suggests actions to make mining more sustainable in Mexico. Interviews with key informants and a revision of documental information available on the internet provided information on 15 cases of conflicts in various parts of the country. The issues varied from incompliance with environmental law to assassination of community members opposing mining. The analysis concludes that mining is not sustainable in Mexico. Both mining companies and the Government of Mexico can make changes to improve sustainability. Mining companies could take a proactive approach and engage in consultation with communities before starting operations. Sharing information with communities on environmental management programs and monitoring results can be a way to start building trust and demonstrate environmental commitments. Companies can implement and evaluate CSR policies to ensure that all staff and contractors are trained on them to reduce and/or prevent corruption and violations of human and indigenous rights. Only 3 of the 15 companies had clear social responsibility policies or sustainability targets, but no reports evaluating them. Complying with the law does not make a project sustainable because of corruption, deficient enforcement, and gaps in legislation. The Government of Mexico should address the following points to make mining more consistent with sustainable development. Update the mining legislation to introduce sustainable development principles and consultation. Incorporate the notion of Free, Prior, Informed Consent (FPIC) for Indigenous People (IP) on all applicable Mexican laws or regulations. The government should not grant concessions on protected areas or indigenous lands without extensive meaningful consultation with the public, IP and land owners. Finally, it is vital to increase SEMARNAT?s capacity to review impact assessment reports and inspect and monitor environmental compliance along the life cycle of projects.

The rapid development of transportation routes on the African continent in recent years has greatly stimulated the demand for motor fuels and this in turn has led to more extensive exploration of such limited portions of the continent as seem to give promise of commercial oil production. In 1930, however, only two countries were classed as producers of petroleum and only one, Egypt, attained any importance. Egypt The petroleum production of Egypt is derived from the Gemsah and Hurghada fields on the west coast of the Red Sea and the Abu Durba, on its eastern shore in the Sinai peninsula. The Gemsah field, which began to produce commercially in 1912, has now practically ceased production, owing to the invasion of salt water. The Hurghada field has been producing since October, 1914. It now has about 60 producing wells. During 1929, a deeper sand with flowing produition was discovered in the eastern part of the field, producing oil of lighter gravity and free from water. The Abu Durba field was discovered by the exploration work of the Egyptian Government in 1918, oil having been found at a depth of 172 ft. This field has now 15 producing wells but a very small production. The principal event in the development of oil and gas in Missouri in 1942 was the drilling of the Cities Service Oil Company's No. I Jim Cook, in the northwest corner, NW. 1/4 sec. 32, T. 65 N., R. 39 W., Atchison County, in the northwest corner of Missouri. This well, not yet completed, bailed several barrels of free oil in about 27° Baume from a sand called the Bartlesville by those in charge, at a depth of 1450 ft. The well is on a block of leases obtained after the area, which is covered by several hundred feet of glacial drift, had been prospected by core drilling. Earlier in the year the same company drilled a well on the Glen Gray farm in the southwest corner, SW. 1/4 sec. 29, T. 65 N., R. 39 w., to a depth of 2427 ft. in the Hunton lime with a rotary drill. Oil stains in this hole led to the drilling of the second well. By analyzing cementite separated electrolytically from white cast iron of known composition and history, the distribution of silicon between austenite and cementite during and after freezing has been followed. The results constitute a contribution to our knowledge of equilibria in the ternary (metastable) system iron-carbon-silicon. Incidental information was obtained, also, with respect to the distribution of manganese, silicon, and phosphorus, when only relatively small amounts of each are present. The major conclusion of the paper is that during solidification, equilibrium is attained when the silicon is all rejected to the liquid phase, permitting silicon-free austenite to separate. OF THE outstanding investigators of the system iron-carbon-silicon, Gontermann,1 Charpy and Cornu-Thenard,2 and Honda,3 only the first touched on the chemical composition of the solid and liquid phases in equilibrium with one another. He concluded that his data did not permit a decision as to which of an indefinitely large number of pairs of compositions of liquid and solid would be found in any given case. If through the three dimensional equilibrium diagram of the iron-carbon-silicon system an isothermal plane is passed in the region of partial solidification, two lines of intersection with the liquidus and solidus, respectively, are obtained, also a point marking the alloys' composition. If, in this, plane, a straight line is drawn through the point, and intersecting both the liquidus and solidus isothermals, the two intersections mark a liquid and a solid alloy that may be chemically in equilibrium at the chosen temperature. From thermal data alone, Gontermann could not assign any particular direction to the line and, hence, could not determine which pair of conjugate points to choose.

Some time ago, the author had occasion to make an alloy of equal parts of nickel and aluminum, for the purpose of adding small amounts of nickel to pure aluminum. The nickel was melted in a plumbago crucible under a layer of borax ; and at a proper temperature the aluminum was added, and the whole mass was stirred with a plumbago stirrer. The alloy immediately became incandescent and boiled. It was then poured into iron moulds, in the form of ingots weighing about 10 pounds. The metal when poured was very fluid and free from the viscosity so often noticed in nickel and nickel-alloys. The color of the alloy is gray, not unlike that of wrought-iron, and the fracture is devoid of any crystalline appearance. It is quite brittle, and can be readily ground to a powder in a mortar. More metal was made than was needed; and what remained unused was placed in a covered wooden box and set away. In about three months, as it mas again necessary to use the alloy, the box was opened; and, much to my surprise, nothing but a dark gray powder was found in it. This condition of the alloy could not be accounted for. An attempt was made to melt the powder and pour it again into ingots, but with negative results. Analogy pointed to disintegration; and it was decided to make a fresh sample of the alloy, and watch the material from the beginning. In the second experiment the conditions were identical with those of the first, with the exception that fluor spar was substituted for the borax. For the past year we have had in use at the Durham furnace a set of hollow pig-patterns made of iron, which have given such satis factory results that I think a description of them would be of interest to the members of the Institute. Before the introduction of these iron patterns, we used the ordi nary wooden patterns, made in the usual way with straps of iron along the sides to protect the corners from wearing off. The size and shape of these wooden patterns are shown in Fig. 1. When the patterns were new, the pigs weighed about 130 pounds each, and were uniform in size, and the moulding was clean. But constant use soon wore the patterns away; and at the end of a few months, the pigs had become, in consequence, so much lighter that the moulding, daily, of several additional beds was necessary to accommodate the same quantity of iron. As the patterns wear away, the moulding becomes ragged and the pigs rough. Moreover, wooden patterns are often destroyed by fire. I have known an entire set to be destroyed by a break-out of iron. The iron pattern which I have designed is free from all the objections to the wooden pattern, being not only more durable, but, in the long run, far cheaper. The iron pattern having the same shape and size as the wooden one, is made of the best flange-iron, of No. 13 gauge. After the sheets have been cut to the proper size, three heats are required for the flanging. Gold production is one the most important mineral process­ing industries in Western Australia. The gold is usually found in either weathered oxidised zones, or associated with sulfides. In the latter case, oxidation is achieved by some form of chemical processing, such as roasting or more recently bacterial leaching. In all cases, gold is dissolved out of the oxidised matrix by cyanide solution. Pyrrhotite is an iron sulfide generally represented by the formula Fe1_,S where O x 0.125. Three different structural forms ofpyrrhotite are known to occur naturally, stoichiometric FeS (troilite), hexagonal pyrrhotite Fe1_xS and monoclinic pyrrhotite Fe7S8 [I]. Substitution of iron atoms within the pyrrhotite structure by other ions of similar atomic radius such as nickel, copper, cobalt and manganese is also possible [2], and often observed in natural pyrrhotite samples. Pyrrhotite is abundant in Western Australian sulfide mineral deposits which are commonly associated with gold bearing ores. It is generally believed that pyrrhotite has a detrimental effect on gold recovery from such ores, as it is commonly claimed to decompose in alkaline, aerated cyanide solutions to form iron cyanide complexes, thus consuming free cyanide, and to form sulfur/oxygen containing species such as sulfate, through oxidation of sulfur in pyrrhotite, which thus consumes oxygen. From information gleaned from the literature, claims about the high reactivity of pyrrhotite in cyanide appear to be based on early cyanidation studies performed on gold ore samples which have been poorly characterised, and contained impurities such as pyrite, arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite, which may have also contributed to the levels of species observed in solution [3-5]. In addition, the investigations do not take into account that iron atoms in the pyrrhotite structure may have been partially substituted by other atoms that influence the solubility of pyrrhotite in cyanide solution.

"Latest stage in the production of boron carbide by metallothermic methods using magnesium was the leaching process. Boron carbide particles obtained by self-propagating high temperature synthesis contained several impurities such as magnesium oxide and magnesium borates after the metallothermic reactions. Removal of such contaminates by hydrometallurgical methods required to produce high purity boron carbide. Leaching by concentrated hydrochloric acid solutions resulted in the production of pure boron carbide together with high magnesium and boron containing solutions. Removal of such ions from the spent liquor was the necessity to have dischargeable solution. In this study, precipitation of magnesium and boron compounds from relevant chloride containing spent liquors and the production of saleable products was aimed. The effects of chemical reagents, pH of the solution on the precipitation efficiency of magnesium and boron compounds were investigated in the study. Chemical analysis and the characterisationof solid phases by using x-ray diffraction analysis were the latest stage.Introduction A variety of advanced ceramics, inter-metallic, organic and inorganic compounds, oxygen free single crystals, and polymers can be synthesized by using different SHS techniques [1, 2, 3]. In the SHS process, after initiation, reaction becomes self-sustaining and propagates in the reactant mixture. A high amount of heat which is generated during the process accelerates the reaction rate and thus it makes the process highly productive and economically feasible for different production scales. After the SHS process obtained powder mixture needs to reacted with acidic solutions to purify the product. In this case B2O3 was reacted together with C and Mg to synthesis fine B4C powder resulted in the production of MgO as well according to the Eq. 1 and then MgO was removed from the mixture by leaching with the concentrated HCl solution as shown in Eq. 2, respectively [4, 5]."

Investment activity in the Pacific Rim of Fire has seen a phenomenal surge from epithermal gold exploration. Individual countries are attractive because of lower up-front minerals lease costs (United States, Canada), better geological prospects (Chile, Indonesia), or cheaper equities (Australia). Since the October 1987 stock market crash, large companies are shedding minority joint venture interests to focus on core businesses. Some vertical integration is evident in Japanese coal investments in the Pacific Rim. This article does not cover the aluminum industry oligopoly, which is multinational in character. Nor does it cover the many Canada to US minerals investments. It will be interesting to see if the new US-Canadian free trade treaty will reverse that investment flow. Cross-border investments The following examples should dispel any doubts about the significance of cross-border investment in the Pacific Rim. Dispersion-strengthened aluminum products consist of an aluminum matrix containing finely distributed ceramic or intermetallic particles. Examples of the two types of product are SAP, in which the dispersed phase is aluminum oxide, and materials made from atomized aluminum alloy powder, in which the dispersed phase can be FeA1, particles.' A fundamental difference between the two types of product is that the elongation of aluminum/aluminum oxide products decreases with increasing temperature, whereas the elongation of aluminum- FeA13 products, like that of aluminum alloys, increases with increasing temperature. As regards the structural stability, aluminum/aluminum oxide products are stable to temperatures above 600° C as aluminum oxide does not react with aluminum, whereas prolonged heating at above 400°C of aluminum-FeA1, products leads to coarsening of the intermetallic phase and loss of strength.' On the basis of these results it is supposed that a dispersion-strengthened product combining strength, ductility, and stability at elevated temperatures may be obtained if the dispersed phase reacts with the matrix in such a way that the reaction does not proceed at any significant rate at the application temperature. Different ceramic or intermetallic compounds may be selected as the dispersed phase, and, as alloying of the matrix phase may also influence the reaction, many possibilities exist for each metal. In the present study, aluminum products containing different oxides have been examined. For a reaction to take place between the dispersed oxide and the aluminum the free energy of formation of the oxide (MeO) must be greater than that of aluminum oxide; the difference should, however, not be too great in order to limit the reaction rate. HE diffusion rate of v48 in single crystals of bee vanadium has been determined at temperatures from 1002° to 1888°C. Standard techniques of lathe sectioning were used for specimens annealed above 1500°C while sectioning by grinding was used for specimens annealed at lower temperatures. As will be seen, the lower-temperature data is enhanced on an Arrhenius-type plot relative to values expected by extrapolation of the high-temperature data. Single crystals were obtained from Linde Co. In Table I the analysis supplied by the vendor is compared with an analysis at Oak Ridge National Laboratory of a sample after a diffusion anneal. The isotope v4' was prepared by the Isotopes Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Proton bombardment of a titanium target in the 86-Inch ORNL Cyclotron was followed by a carrier-free chemical separation. Nineteen specimens, 1/2 in. diam and 3/8 in. long, were cut from the as-received vanadium single crystals. Each specimen was machined with the flat face perpendicular to the longitudinal axis. Specimens were polished through 1/0 emery paper and were etched with 25 pct HF-10 pct H2SO4-10 pct HNO3-55 pct H2O. The polishing and etching steps were repeated until a satisfactory surface finish was achieved. The isotope was electroplated onto the specimens from a neutral solution. Counting rates of the deposited layers were approximately 100 counts per sec. At temperatures above 1200°C specimens were annealed in a tantalum resistance furnace under an argon atmosphere. Temperatures were measured with a Pyro micro-optical pyrometer and a Pt-Pt 10 pct Rh thermocouple. At lower temperatures the specimens were sealed in evacuated quartz ampoules and annealed in Kanthal wire-wound horizontal tube furnaces. A severe reaction occurred at 1200°C between the quartz and the vanadium. This

Anand and Agarwala recently determined diffusion coefficients by the residual activity (Gruzin) method for several tracers in large-grained, high-purity aluminum. D values at any particular temperature in the range of 400" to 630°C were about four orders of magnitude lower for cd115, 1n114, sn113, and pdlm than for Ag. Corresponding values for Do and Q in the Arrhenius equation were also quite small. It was pointed out previously that unusually low diffusion coefficients within the region of a specimen near a free surface may be the major cause of such anomalous results for impurity diffusion in silver and in aluminum.44 Anand and Agarwala considered this possibility but rejected it because their penetration profiles were "homogeneous" and "yielded diffusion coefficients obeying the Arrhenius plot". Neither of these two criteria satisfactorily prove or disprove the presence of a near-surface effect. Such can be accomplished only by direct serial sectioning in which the chips ground from the specimen are assayed for tracer content. In fact, such experiments always should be done prior to use of the somewhat indirect Gruzin method where the finer details of the transport process cannot be determined. There have been several other reports of unusually low D, Do, and Q values for impurity diffusion in silver and aluminum.1"4 It is interesting to note that all of these studies made use of the Gruzin method. Also, in all cases where the same systems were examined by use of a direct serial sectioning technique, large near-surface effects were observed. One must conclude therefore that the reported anomalous diffusion parameters for cd, In114, sn113, and pd in aluminum are due to some near-surface effect, while the results for Agl10 indicate that no such effect was encountered for this system.
