This paper is one of a series on mining and milling method and costs being published by the United States Bureau of Mines. The Golden Messenger mine, operated by the United Gold Mines Corporation, is in the York-Confederate Gulch mining region in Luis and Clark County, Mont., 22 miles northeast of the city limits of Helena and about 1 mile north of the town of York. It is the first operation to exploit successfully the low-grade ores of the York-Confederate Gulch area. The unusual vein structure presents some mining problems that have been solved in ail interesting manner.

The Kidd operation mines roughly 10 000 tpd of copper and zinc ore from underground and employs about 700 personnel. In the late summer and fall of 1997, major movements in the proximity of the east wall of the Kidd open pit had been observed. The Kidd pit had been mined from 1965 to 1977 to depths of 260 m (850 ft), followed by subsequent mining by underground methods to current depths in excess of 1830 m (6800 ft). The No. 1 Mine (2600 Level to pit bottom) is approximately 90% extracted, with most of the remaining reserve between 2000 and 2500 levels. Although initial concerns centred on the stability of the pit walls, the potential ramifications of the movements to the underground were recognized and measures were implemented to ensure the safety of personnel as well as to minimize the potential damage to existing operations. In late October, damage to underground operations was observed as deep as the 2000 Level. In the final assessment, the global mobilized mass was a “wedge”-shaped hangingwall block extending from surface to about 610 m (2000 ft) below surface. The “wedge” boundaries are defined by a fault and shear zone which have continuous lengths in excess of 1070 m (3500 ft); its base by shearing through the host rock mass; and its eastern face by deep tension cracks (Fig. 1). Mined and filled excavations at the western face of the “wedge” allowed mobilization of a mass in excess of 30 M tonnes. Movements in excess of 75 cm (30 in.) per day were recorded on the surface stations that preceded the complete shutdown of operations on October 29, 1997. The evaluations in the days following the shut-down were centred on mitigation of immediate and future possible negative impacts on infrastructure and mining of the remaining No. 1 Mine reserves while ensuring the safety of the operators. This effort required the rapid assessment of the potential damage of the block movement on underground infrastructure, stope access, drainage and ventilation, as well as airblast potential due to the falling of a large block into the pit near the ventilation intake at the base of the pit. These assessments were presented in a previous paper (Seldon et al., 1999). In total, the lateral movement of the block on the ground surface was over 4.3 m (14 ft). This paper describes the detailed studies performed to understand the failure mechanism and to assess the impacts on future mining in No. 1 Mine.

This paper discusses characterisation techniques that can be applied to complex waste products from metal production and processing operations with the aim of devising treatment methods for upgrading the metal content for recycling. Two waste streams were selected to illustrate the role of characterisation in adapting mineral processing techniques to provide an effective recycling strategy. Waste products chosen were:aluminium dross, which contains metallic aluminium particles in a coarse matrix of many components; and steel shredder sludge that contains copper wire and other metallics in a matrix of plastic and natural fibres, iron oxides, metallic iron, and other compounds. Characterisation methods discussed include chemical analysis (XRF, ICP-AES, and selected specialised techniques), phase analysis (XRD, SEM, TEM, and optical microscopy), morphology (IFESEM), sizing analysis (screening, Cyclosizing, Infrasizing, Malvern sizing), and general techniques such as particle shape, surface area, and porosity determinations. The applicability of these techniques to the waste products is considered in relation to their advantages and disadvantages, and sampling issues.Treatment techniques considered for the two waste products included comminution, screening, air or water classification, simple water leaching, gravity separation, magnetic separation, flotation, and eddy current separation.Tentative flow sheets were developed for the two wastes. For aluminium dross, it was proposed to use fine crushing followed by water washing to remove soluble chlorides and aluminium nitride, and then desliming followed by flotation of the granular fraction to give a metallic aluminium-rich concentrate. For shredder sludge, it was proposed to use wet screening, water classification, and gravity concentration to produce a copper-rich product and magnetic separation to produce a metallic iron-rich product.

Testing of in situ seals in underground coal mines is critical to determine seal integrity and to provide safe working conditions. In the wake of the 2006 Sago Mine explosion, the United States of America (USA) promulgated the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response (MINER) Act (USDOL, 2006) which required mines to install 827 kPa (120 psi) rated seals or monitor and maintain the atmosphere behind existing 345 kPa (50 psi) seals. The purpose of developing the regulations was to prevent the breaching of seals in the event of an explosion in the sealed area.While seal design and construction is carefully regulated in practice, the construction of seals is difficult to monitor, as many are constructed under various mine conditions and the methods rely on prescribed placement of the seal material. Further examination of installed seals is limited to two-dimensional visual inspection and atmospheric and convergence measuring devices. These methods do not accurately reflect the integrity of the seal and cannot detect changes, deterioration, or defects within the seal.If detection of defects, deterioration and damage is not possible, unexpected communication between the active and sealed areas may result. Additionally, the ability of the seal to withstand explosions may be compromised. Non-destructive testing (NDT) of underground mine seals is necessary to investigate if the seal properties have been altered and if the seal remains functional as a barrier between active areas and sealed areas of the mine. Oxidized coals are difficult to float. Therefore, in this paper, a special flotation procedure was investigated for upgrading this type of coal. The procedure is called direct contact flotation. It relies on mixing dry coal either with pure (anhydrous) flotation reagent(s) or microemulsion. By applying the new direct contact flotation procedure, a coal yield reaching > 95% using anhydrous flotation reagents was achieved, but with relatively high consumption of reagents (up to 30 g/kg). This high reagent consumption may be attributed to the fines included in the flotation feed (100% less than 0.5 mm, with 40% less than 75 µm). On the other hand, the clean coal yield was found to be approximately 88% when mixing dry oxidized coal with microemulsion droplets from dodecane and dodecyl tetra (ethylene glycol) ether (C12E4) in water at a total reagent dosage of 10 g/kg. The direct contact of coal either with unhydrous reagents or microemulsion also provided a high flotation selectivity.

This work aims at the selection of an appropriate eluant for cyanide recycling using ion exchange resins. Based on a literature review as well as on experimental results, the elution of resins loaded with copper and minor amounts of iron and nickel is discussed. The resins Imac HP 555s, Amberlite IRA 900 (Rohm&Hass) and Purolite A860S (Purolite Co) were eluted using either NaCI, zinc and nickel cyanides, hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid or acid thiourea solutions. The results indicate that saline solutions are effective only with polyacrylic resins (Purolite A860S), failing to desorb the metals, specially the nickel cyanocomplex, loaded on polystyrene-based resins. Cyanide solutions of both zinc and nickel are capable of eluting over 90% of the loaded metals. In contact with pure acid' solutions, iron precipitates onto the resin beads, as Cu(II) ferrous cyanideCu2Fe(CN)6.xH20. Thiourea is able to elute all the three metal cyanocomplexes owing to the increased solubility of copper cyanocomplexes in the presence of this complexing agent. The results demonstrate that a universal eluant is not available and the selection of the most appropriate resin-elution procedure should be based on the specific features of the system under consideration

This program was conducted to demonstrate the unique advantages of suppressing methane ignition in underground mines by use of Energy & Minerals Research Company's thixogel fire extinguishing system, which stably suspends dry powder extinguishing agent in thixotropically gelled liquefied gas extinguishant. As anticipated, the project demonstrated thixogel system advantages of: 1) capability to disperse state-of-the-art powders in thixogelled Halons; 2) non-agglomerating stability for dependable expulsion; 3) stability in storage for long shelf life; 4) virtually in¬stantaneous dispersion; 5) expansive cloud formation; 6) reach and re-forming around obstacles; 7) at least twice the extinguishant effectiveness; and 8) compatibility of use with Fenwal bottles and MSHA canisters. Thus, it should prove a superior explosion/fire suppressant for coal face cutters and triggered barriers, as well as for motorized equipment, electrical equipment and the like.

The effect of grain refinement on the tensile and fatigue crack propagation behavior of sand cast magnesium alloy AM60B has been investigated in the present study, C2Cl6 in the amount of 0,3% was used to grain refine the melt, The fracture toughness tests were conducted in laboratory air at room temperature (25°C) using a sine-wave cyclic frequency of 20Hz and a load ratio of R = 0,1, The response in the Paris's regime and the critical stress range were determined, Preliminary findings have shown that C2Cl6 has a significant effect on both the tensile properties and fatigue crack propagation of the alloy tested, Grain refinement increased both the yield and ultimate tensile strength by more than 46%, and decreased the crack growth rate from 2,7 to 1,4 MPa Vm , However, the grain size seems to have a smaller effect on threshold stress intensity factor range. The fracture surfaces of specimens were examined optically and under the scanning electron microscope (SEM) to determine the relationship between grain size and fatigue properties.

Debswana, owned by the Government of the Republic of Botswana (GRB) and De Beers in a 50:50 joint venture partnership, operates the Jwaneng diamond mine in Botswana - the most valuable diamond mine in the world. The mine provides between 60 - 70 per cent of DebswanaÆs earnings, and about 30 - 40 per cent of the GRBÆs income. In 2008, the company embarked on the Cut 8 Project - an open pit waste cut-back to expose more diamond bearing ore to sustain mine life by another six to seven years. This undertaking was much larger than previous cut-backs; it increased the waste stripping ratio threefold, increasing significantly the waste handling fleet of trucks, shovels and infrastructure, and impacted a large part of the materials handling plant which required replacement with new facilities. The project coincided with the beginning of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) and a slowdown in the economy. Its $4 billion total life cost was billed as æthe largest private investment project in BotswanaÆ which produced heightened expectations amongst stakeholders that it would redress some of the issues brought about by the GFC and leave behind a legacy of jobs, increased opportunities for citizen owned business and improved social infrastructure.Most of the big project challenges were non-technical and ranged from dealing with various stakeholders?at?all levels, a 25 per cent currency depreciation of the Botswana Pula against the South African Rand, obtaining work permits for non-citizens in a job starved environment, managing construction to world class safety standards, managing the low productivity of construction workers and producing a viable legacy program that satisfied the GRB and stakeholders. Whilst most of these risks were identified in front end studies, the magnitudes were in many instances underestimated. Managing this uncertainty on Cut 8 can provide valuable lessons to other projects in a similar environment, or at least provide the information to indicate that these factors should be adequately provided for in the financial evaluation of a project in the form of budget, schedule, contingency or risk mitigation.CITATION:Jones, G M and J Rademan, 2012. The mineralogy of the primary and oxidized ores from the Malanjkhand porphyry copper deposit in India was studied to determine ore characteristics that affect metallurgy, and to assess applicable processes for recovering the copper. Three mineral assemblages were found. One occurs in primary ore, another in moderately oxidized ore, and a thir:d in intensely oxidized ore. Chalcopyrite, the main mineral in the primary ore, is relatively coarse-grained, with grain size increasing as the ore grade increases. High chalcopyrite liberations should be achieved at a relatively coarse grind, and good chalcopyrite recoveries should be obtained. The chalcopyrite, however, tarnishes readily and oXidizes to chalcocite in a relatively short time (several months). The presence of both the tarnished chalcopyrite and chalcocite may affect chalcopyrite flotation and reduce copper recoveries, The moderately oxidized ore occurs in an oxidized cap immediately above the primary ore, and stockpiled primary ore alters quickly to a moderately oxidized ore. Chalcocite is a major copper-bearing mineral in moderately OXidized ore. The concentrator processing this ore should be capable of handling a chalcocite-rich ore. The intensely OXidized ore contains a wide variety of acid-soluble copper-bearing minerals. Leaching may be required to recover the copper from them.

Longwall mining is the term used for the underground extraction of a wide and deep panel of coal. Such a panel may be blocked out by one or more entries on either side ("head" and "tail") of a longwall face. If all the entries are pre-driven, the panel extraction is termed longwall retreat mining. With one exception, all the longwall faces in the United States are of this type. (1) prior to the general decline in the rates of production with Continuous Miners, the development of the multiple entries generally kept ahead of the longwall extraction rate. This is no longer the case: longwall extraction rates far exceed the rate of development. In addition to this problem, in newly established mines, the development of a haulage and bleeder system based on multiple entries results in a lead-time of three years or more before longwall mining can be applied. This is one reason why earlier projections and much of the optimism attached to longwall mining as a principal "savior" in the energy crisis should be viewed with some caution.

The objective of this investigation was to determine the feasibility of using a high-pressure roll mill (HPRM) to improve the separation efficiency of dolomite from apatite in downstream operations when treating high-dolomitic pebbles. High-dolomite samples from four phosphate mines were used for the test program. The research work plan included sample characterization studies; INSTRON tests to develop preliminary crushing data; high-pressure roll mill evaluations to determine crushing parameters, such as feed rates, rolls speed and gap, and applied torque, pressure and energy; and screen, microscopy, and flotation studies to assess dolomitelapatite separation efficiency. The results of the HPRM tests show that commercial products for all four mines can be obtained. Recoveries of 74-82% of the P2O5 and rejections of 46-83% of the MgO were reported with an specific energy consumption of 0.2-0.5 of that of a laboratory rod mill.

Determination of the adsorbed layer composition and structure at molecular and atomic levels and understanding adsorption mechanisms and dynamics are vitally important for the preparation of surface layers with specific functions. Direct information, at a molecular level, about mineral surface composition, its structure and surface distribution is crucial to perform an efficient separation process for mineral beneficiation. This information is equally important for modifying surface properties of industrial minerals for specific applications such as: fillers, composites, weathering resistance, etc. An understanding of the mechanisms and kinetics of the interaction of first adsorbed organic molecules with mineral surfaces is a fundamental requirement for the prediction and control of the macroscopic surface properties governing the efficiency of separation technologies or new material formulations. The developed infrared external reflection technique has a unique ability to study interface phenomena, at a molecular level, on heterogeneous substrates. The variety, precision and reliability of information about the interface phenomena delivered by this technique is superior to any other single technique. The experiments are fast and non-destructive. High sensitivity (starting from 20 per cent of the monolayer) in situ collected information in a multiphase system, even in the region of strong absorption of the substrate, makes this technique a very valuable experimental tool. The complexity of the recorded reflection spectra, their sensitivity to variations of the optical properties of all bulk and surface components and their spatial distribution in the system under investigation, are in fact the major strengths of this technique. A few examples of the application of this multi-diagnostic technique, for monitoring surface modifications of semi-soluble minerals for selective flotation, will be discussed in detail in this paper.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research to assess the effectiveness of different chain pillar designs in maintaining gate entry stability. A particular concern is ground control for deep-cover 1ongwalls located at depths in excess of 1,000 ft. The study described in this report was performed in two experimental sections in one longwall headgate section which contained three different pillar designs. Two of the designs used conventional abutment pillars, while the third was a total-yielding pillar system. Both of the test areas were located under 1,800 ft of cover. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of these three pillar designs for gate road stability. As the longwall mined passed the test areas, Bureau engineers monitored entry convergence, roof sag, and changes in roof quality. The study indicated that the all-yield system performed nearly as well as the better of the two abutment pillar systems; but all of the three designs would have failed to provide acceptable stability for second panel mining without considerable artificial support.

In potash ore flotation, carried out in NaCI-KCI saturated brine (about 6-7 molar KC1 and NaCI solution), long-chain primary amines are used as flotation collectors. Long-chain primary amines are poorly soluble in water and their solubility further decreases at high electrolyte concentration. For ionic surfactants there is a characteristic temperature (Krafft Point, KP) below which their solubility is too low for micellization. In a previous study, the effect of pH on the KP of dodecylammonium chloride in water was determined [Q. Dai and J.S. Laskowski, Langmuir, 7, 1361-1365 (1991)]. This paper deals with the effect of electrolyte concentration on the KP of dodecylammonium chloride. The derived theoretical relationship between the KP and the critical micelle concentration (CMC) for dodecylamine can be used to calculate the KP for electrolyte concentrations of up to 0.5 mol/L (about 8% NaCI-KCI brine). A simple experimental procedure for the determination of the KP for higher electrolyte concentrations is also described. The results show that the Krafft point of dodecylamine increases from about 17-18°C (in distilled water) to about 80°C at 16% brine saturation.

Efficient and effective management of extraction process tailings is an essential ingredient for the continued success and development of Alberta's vast oil sands resources. Open-pit oil sands operations north of Fort McMurray recover bitumen from flotation circuits. Process tailings are managed in carefully engineered and monitored external tailings management facilities and in below-grade mine pits. In order to support reduction of production costs and improve upon established tailings management practices, CANMET has been working with the oil sands industry in a collaborative framework to assess the potential to integrate thickened tailings into oil sands extraction process flowsheets. Albian Sands has commercialized the process while others, including Syncrude Canada Ltd., continue to evaluate the suitability of the process for their operations. This paper provides an update on R&D work undertaken in recent years to assess and develop the potential of thickened tailings technology for the open-pit oil sands operators of northern Alberta. The aim of this work was to explore opportunities to optimize process efficiency and environmental sustainability by improving water and energy conservation and develop more alternatives for tailings management and reclamation.

In the pelletizing plant of Hoogovens, Estel BV, a varying mixture of hematites and magnetites is used for the production of acid and (occasionally) fluxed pellets. Optimum results regarding productivity, quality and process control are obtained with mixtures containing 30-40 % magnetites. A decrease of the magnetite ratio or an increase of the basicity has a great influence on both productivity and heat and power consumption. Tests have been carried out to find the extent to which magnetite can be replaced by b.f. dust, mill-scale and coke breeze. Pilot plant tests show that about 80-100 % of the production loss due to a decrease in magnetite content or to the increase in basicity can be regained without damage to the quality by adding coke breeze. The amount of coke breeze should be limited tot 1,5 %; if this percen¬tage is chosen higher, the quality of the pellets deteriorates rapidly. The amount of coke breeze to be added should be about 30 % above the theoretical value, based on heat balance considerations. The results achieved by incorporating b.f. dust and mill-scale into the pelletmix were also encouraging, but as some types of mill-scale are very difficult to grind and the supply of b.f. dust is limited, the research has not been carried out extensively in this field. The pilot plant tests on replacement of magnetite by coke breeze have been followed by industrial tests, during which the breeze was added to the ore feed before the dry-grinding system.

Rampura Agucha open pit mine has successfully been excavated to a depth of 320 m, incorporating multistage working. The key to success is the implementation of presplitting as control blast measures at every stage of mining, including intermediate cut backs, in addition to the final wall. The major challenges encountered in establishing presplitting in the hang wall as compared to the footwall of the mine are:reversely dipping foliation, ie dipping into the hang wall itselfstriking obliquely at an angle of 20–30° with regards to the general strike of the pit wallthe presence of numerous geological planes of weaknesses like major faults, slips, etc.Control blast parameters like hole inclination, spacing and stand-off with buffer row were chosen initially from the literature survey and were subsequently fine-tuned by field trials to the mine geo-mining conditions of the hang wall. "The Syama Gold Mine, located in southern Mali, was established in 1990 by Broken Hill Propriety Limited (BHP). The operation began treating oxide, and in 1994 it transitioned to processing hard and refractory ore based on ‘whole-of-ore’ roasting. In 1996, BHP was succeeded by Randgold Resources and the operation ran until 2001, when it was placed into care and maintenance.The Syama ore is classified as a double refractory ore with pyrite occluding the fine grained gold present in the ore and high levels of organic carbon presenting a challenge in terms of preg-robbing behaviour. The ore is extremely competent and this combination of metallurgical features was the main source of metallurgical problems encountered by the previous owners.Resolute Mining Limited (RML) acquired the Syama project in 2004. Following a feasibility study and the development of a revised processing flow sheet the plant was recommissioned in 2008 using a combination of old and new equipment. The revised flow sheet enabled primary sulfide ore to be treated by flotation and roasting of the concentrate to produce a calcine suitable for conventional carbon-in-leach (CIL) processing.Commissioning and ramp up of the plant was a troubled process, with monthly gold production being as low as 3000 oz in 2010. Poor availability of equipment and lower-than-forecast recoveries were the primary contributors.During the last five years, RML has utilised a systematic approach to improve production, focusing on mechanical reliability, metallurgical recovery and process bottlenecks. Modifications to the circuit have been as a result of both innovation and the application of technological improvements. Improvements have been made to the flotation, roasting and CIL circuits and RML has introduced a deslime circuit to treat flotation concentrate, in addition to the very successful commissioning of a new 1 Mt/a oxide circuit in December 2014. These changes have resulted in gold production increasing to more than 20 000 oz per month in 2015.This paper presents the processes, change implementation and outcomes of the modifications made to the sulfide circuit to address the availability and recovery problems.Apart from the expansion of an existing, world-class deposit and discovery of new resources, future improvements on the path to a class-leading gold mine include the continued reduction of the unit cash cost, increase in overall sulfide circuit gold recovery, increased throughput through continued innovation and consistency in the plant’s operation.Citation:Sinclair, R, Hunter, I and Landwehr, D, 2016. "Severe drilling conditions and difficult mud problems are briefly out-lined as the major cost items in all production operations. The chief problems discussed are abnormal pressures, high temperature, trouble-some shales, and low rates of penetration. These problems have been eliminated or greatly reduced in many areas by• the proper application of recently developed drilling mud products and techniques. These severe problems and their solutions are discussed generally: the application of high-density weighting materials to overcome abnormal pressures; surfactant muds with sodium polyacrylate as a solution for deep and high-temperature drilling; shale control muds and new dispersants for severe shale problems; and low-solids emulsions and •extreme-pressure lubricants for greatly improved rates of penetration."
