The Belizean economy had an estimated annual growth of about 3.4% over that of 1986. Economic growth during the 2 previous years was slower and was characterized by a negative trade balance. The gross domestic product (GDP) was an estimated $200 millioni2 in current dollars. Limited natural resources and scarce finances continued to make the Government's task a difficult one. Belize and China signed an economic cooperation agreement in April under which the Chinese Government is to provide technical assistance, a cash grant of $60.000, and a long-term, interest-free loan of approximately $1.5 million. In May, it was reported that gold was discovered in a remote area of the Maya Mountains in western Belize. An estimated unassayed value of $400 million has been placed on the deposit by one of its discoverers. However, the government in Belmopan has played down the discovery. Two U.S. oil companies. Seahawk Oil International of California and Alston Oil Co. of Texas, were granted licenses to explore for oil. Seahawk Oil will explore a large area of the Orange and Corozal Districts, while Alston Oil will prospect a 90,000-acre area of the western Cayo District. Another U.S. oil company, Pecten Oil Co., recently completed seismic studies off-shore of Belize City. Pecten Oil has made plans to start drilling in 1988.

This report describes an investigation by the Bureau of Mines of flotation techniques for the recovery of chromite from fine-grained disseminated ores. Reported work on the concentration of chromiferous materials shows that flotation has been applied almost exclusively to slime-free pulps. Therefore, chromium recoveries that could be obtained by flotation were related to the amount of slime rejected. However, results of recent studies by the Bureau of Mines showed that des liming is not a requisite to selective concentration of chromite. Laboratory-scale tests on seven ore types from the more important chromium-bearing areas of the Pacific Northwest showed flotation to be technically feasible for treatment of all but one of the samples. Concentrate grades were affected more by the composition of the chromite mineral than by the grade or character of the ore. Test results from three of the samples showed that, without prior desliming of the pulp, 78 to 91 percent of the chromium could be recovered in concentrates of 90 percent or more chromite; two samples responded to similar treatment, resulting in concentrates of more than 80 percent chromite with recoveries of 85 and 89 percent chromium. One sample of mill products, subjected to severe weathering, required removal of the primary slime to obtain a concentrate of 65 percent chromite with only 75 percent chromium recovery.

Several short color films describing new technology developed through Bureau of Mines research are available on a loan basis. The films review results of Bureau research programs aimed at aiding the minerals industry by increasing mine productivity, ensuring worker health and safety, and enhancing minerals recovery, processing and recycling. Most of the films are available in a choice of for mats: 16mm film, ½" VHS cassette tape, or ¾" U-matic tape. The films are loaned by the Bureau of Mines free of charge; borrowers are requested to pay only the return postage and for any damage to the films. All titles are also available for purchase in 16mm or videotape formats. Interested persons wishing to borrow or purchase a film should specify its title and the preferred and alternate showing dates. "Abstract - The lipid component in hydrothermal deposits of the Logachev vent field, at 14°45_N of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) and Broken Spur vent field, at 29°N of the MAR, was studied. Biochemical, gas chromatographic (GS), and molecular mass methods (GC-MS) research established the mixed nature of the organic matter (OM) including phytoplanktonogenous, chemosynthesized lipids, and lipids of questionable origin. Specific local conditions around the sulfide ores of the black smokers (absence of free oxygen and presence of reduced copper, which prevents OM degradation) facilitate the preservation of biogenic material, including bacteria. The main differences between the lipid compositions of the hydrothermal deposits of these two vent fields relate to the variable nature of hydrothermal circulation systems.At the 14°45_N vent field, high-temperature hydrothermal fields are forming due to the reaction of sea water with upper mantle ultrabasic rocks during serpentinization (a deep hydrothermal circulation system). High pressure and temperature (>400°C), a reducing environment and the presence of various metal oxides are favorable for the abiogenic synthesis of CH4 and oil hydrocarbons (HC). At the Broken Spur vent field, hydrothermal deposits are forming above axial crust magma chambers due to the interaction of sea water and basalts (an axial hydrothermal circulation system). Abiogenic synthesis of HC also occurs in this situation, but to a considerably lesser extent."

The specification for tender nominated the requirements for ore hoisting and servicing; this showed that one common duty winder could be selected. Foliowing the design of the shaft layout, the merits of fixed or rope guides were compared and the latter selected.The specification called for the supply and installation of the complete hoisting system. Construction of the winder tower and shaft bottom steel work had to proceed while mine development was in progress using the sinking winder and headframe. Guide ropes, winder ropes, and the sky shaft were installed in the shortest possible time, and as the shaft was not equipped with ladder-ways, a second means of access had to be provided.Very few problems were encountered witll the commissioning of the winder, and in the first 2 years of operation the only significant modification was to the circuitry associated witll the moving access platforms.Hoist rope tension checking and adjustment are simple, and non-destructive testing has shown no deterioration of these ropes. The operation of the balance ropes has been very satisfactory but cleaning presented problems in the early stages. Guide ropes have been trouble free and require minimum attention.Normal wear on the PVC rope groove inserts on the winder drum has been negligible.Since the commissioning on fully automatic ·control, the winder has operated with very few, minor delays.

THE ores mined by the Santa Gertrudis Co. at Pachuca, Mexico, are mainly silver-bearing; they also yield some gold and carry a little copper. Strong cyanide solutions are used to dissolve the silver and gold, and the mechanical loss of cyanide at the tailings filter has been considerable. Prior to the year 1923, the pulp, after agitation, was given a 35 to 37-min. wash with barren solution in a Butters-type leaf filter; the discharged slime cake was repulped and pumped into eight Merrill self-sluicing slime presses in which the slime was given a further wash with barren solution for 25 to 35 min., followed by a 10-min. water wash. At that time the barren solution titrated around 0.350 per cent. free KCN and 0.500 per cent. total KCN. (Aero brand cyanide is used.) It can readily be seen that a 10-min. water wash would leave considerable cyanide in the filter cake, which of course was a total loss. This averaged 0.522 kg. (1.15 lb.) KCN per ton of solution. As the daily discharge to. the dam was 1600 tons1 of slime of a 2: 1 ratio of liquid to solid, the value of this mechanical loss of cyanide was an important item and its recovery held alluring possibilities.

The equilibrium of boron nitride, gaseous nitrogen, and solute boron was investigated in Fe, Fe-C, and Fe-Si rnelts by the Sieverts technique. The free ellergy of dissociation of boron nitride, involving -the implied standard states, was evaluated in the range 1400" to 1600°C as: ?Fo = 38,000 - 23.5T, cal ber mole The solute-solute interaction coefficients eBB, ecB , and eg were determined as 0.058, 0.22, and 0.078, respectively. BORON is an important ingredient in some types of steel and cast iron. It was employed at a particularly high level, 0.01 wt pet, in the as-cast malleable iron "CentraSteel".1 In this material, the boron concentration was critical in order to assure graphite, and avoid primary cementite, in the as-cast structure. One possible function of the boron in this alloy was the nucleation of graphite through the agency of boron nitride, which, conceivably, precipitated from the melt during cooling. A research program was instituted to assess the validity of this proposed mechanism. The first undertaking, reported here, was a determination of the thermodynamic possibility of boron nitride precipitation. Data available in the literature on the activity coefficient of solute boron in iron-base melts are inadequate for the present purpose. The capital requirements to develop a new mining venture are becoming very large; amounts of the order of US$1,000 million are not now unusual among estimates to bring new mining complexes into production. At the same time prevailing political and economic conditions are making it increasingly difficult to determine whether or not a project is likely to be viable. These factors emphasise the need to carry out thorough evaluation studies of all mineral prospects before making major investment. Additionally with the rapidly changing economic climate existing at the present time, it is becoming more and more necessary to carry out reappraisals of existing mines. An important function of both initial evaluations and reappraisals is to provide the operators of the mine with effective mining plans to ensure that the operation will meet its required economic targets. CREEP investigators have made extensive studies to determine the interrelation of stress, temperature and the tensile creep rates of metals. It has been suggested that at small stresses the secondary or constant creep rates obey a simple viscous law. Building upon this suggestion, departure from pure viscosity as stress increases may be expressed mathematically as a consequence of reversibly altered viscosity or "flowability" in the same sense that temperature change reversibly alters viscosity. From the index to alteration of viscosity, a value for the energy of secondary creep may be derived having the magnitude of the free energy of vaporized metal. The suggestion is made that applica-tion of stress alters the energy of secondary creep. Strain energy is argued to be but a minor factor in the energetics of secondary creep. A deformation mechanism involving the large energy associated with secondary creep implies a sort of solid self-diffusion process. Evidence indicates that creep strain above the recrystallization temperature takes place by crystallographically directed self-diffusion at grain boundaries and points of crystal defects. A self-diffusion theory of secondary creep is proposed, embracing the principles of the Dushman-Langmuir theory of solid diffusion. An equation is suggested whereby the rate of tensile creep may be related directly to the physical and struc-tural character of the solid metal.

THE terms kaolin, china clay, ball clay, and paper clay are more or less loosely and interchangeably applied to a large class of white-burning clays. These clays are made up chiefly of hydrous amorphous (colloidal) aluminum silicates with variable amounts of free silica and other impurities in small quantities. Occasionally also the term kaolinite is wrongly applied to a white-burning clay, for kaolinite, is a mineral of definite chemical composition and definite crystalline form which occurs but sparingly in nature. It is not the purpose of this paper, however, to define or classify clays, or to enter into a discussion of the chemistry of clays. It is rather a general description of the occurrence and methods of mining of a kindred group of clays, and a discussion of their future economic aspect. In the Southern Appalachian States, the mining of white-burning clays has in recent years become an important industry. Although these clays are of several distinct types, which occur in as many localities under different geologic conditions, they are for the most part. primarily of the same origin. They are essentially the same in elementary constituents, and are largely consumed in the same industrial arts. From the standpoint of a mining engineer, therefore, and for convenience in comparison and correlation, it should be interesting to discuss them under one heading.

Appin Colliery mines the Bulli Seam with a gas composition of 98.5% methane and 1.5% carbon dioxide. Relaxation of the strata generally occurs to below the base of the Wongawilli Seam, some 40 m below the Bulli Seam, and approxim- ately 125 m above the Bulli Seam, for longwall face widths of 135 m or more. Previous exper- ience showed that when longwall faces were mined for a distance approximately equal to the face width, the mine ventilation could not provide sufficient dilution due to methane emissions from the underlying measures. Postdraining downholes were drilled to intersect the Wongawilli Seam below the operat- ng longwall. These holes were connected to an underground to surface gas range and various suction levels were applied to improve gas drainage. The resulting gas flow rates and purity from all the downholes were regularly monitored and peak flows in some holes exceeded 160 1/sec. The surface plant drained almost 20 million m3 of gas for the period July 1981 to January 1982 at an average methane purity of approximately 70%. Distinct patterns emerged for different downholes from curves illustrat- ing their variations in flow rate with distance subsequent to passage of the longwall face. "IntroductionSeveral new smelting processes have been proposed and developed during the last 20 years. This has been true, in particular, for copper smelting technology. The important impulses for the advances in this field have been the recent demands regarding the environmental protection, energy saving and improved utilization of the metals contents of deposits, in particular that of complex raw materials.The methods developed more recently for pursuing these objectives have been outlined in several papers. In some of them the advantages and drawbacks of certain developments have been stressed. These documents are of great importance for assessing the different processes. The following paper tries to explain some details of the cyclone smelting process taking into consideration a few of these well-known presentations. The effectiveness of operation of the cyclone smelting process indicates that this process presents a significant achievement when compared with other conventional methods.The application of the CONTOP smelting cyclone range s beyond the field of copper metallurgy or the smelting of sulphide concentrates with the aid of oxygen. The research work carried out in the pilot plant of KHD Humboldt Wedag AG in Cologne-Porz also includes the recovery of the metal contents of intermediate products and processing of smelter residues which have to be converted in a disposable stat e, free of environmental pollution. Because of the extreme interest in materials with high melting temperatures and the advantages offered over the powder route for making high-density material, arc-melting and centrifugal-casting methods were investigated for preparing shapes of hafnium carbide with and without excess carbon. Highly satisfactory equipment was constructed and efficient operating procedures were established. Also, methods for preparing consumable electrodes and shrink-tolerant graphite molds were developed. Although crack-free hafnium carbide (6.3 weight-percent carbon) shapes were not made, coherent castings containing 9 to 13.5 weight-percent carbon were produced; the same compositions were shown to be resistant to thermal shock. Selected physical and chemical tests were performed on castings chosen for investigation by chemical and nondestructive inspection techniques. Electrical conductivity and thermal expansion measurements were made. Measurable oxidation of all the compositions studied was observed to start between 500° and 600° C. Attack by nitrogen, however, did not occur until temperatures exceeded 2,000° C. A linear relationship of the logarithm of the diamond pyramid hardness to the temperature was noted. Considerable scatter of the bend-rupture strengths at room temperature and of the tensile strengths up to 2,000° C was found. However, at the latter temperature and above, a definite relationship of strength to temperature was observed and some ductility was noted.

"This paper describes some recent research done at CANMET in the areas of ion exchange and A VR (Acidification- Volatilization Reneutralization), as applied to the recovery of gold and cyanide, respectively. It also discusses the ways in which these two technologies may be combined in order to minimize the environmental impact of gold milling operations and optimize reagent usage. IntroductionGold milling operations can essentially be divided into those that carry out a liquid/solid separation after leaching and those that recover gold directly from a leach pulp. The former produce a barren solution which may contain considerable amounts of cyanide, either free or cornplexed with metals. The latter produce a similar solution but this is now part of a slurry rather than a clear stream. Due to its toxicity, any excess cyanide must be destroyed before the effluent is discharged into the environment. Ideally, this should be (and sometimes is) accomplished by natural degradation. However, in many cases natural degradation alone cannot remove the last traces of rnetallocyanide compounds from the effluent and , as a result, most Canadian gold producers utilize a supplementary chemical oxidation system. This not only increases the operating costs, but concerns have also arisen in recent years about the formation of ammonia as a result of the chemical oxidation of cyanide (via CN--CNO--HCNO-NH3) ·"

Social and political movements that had been gathering momentum over several years continued in 1993 to dramatically affect and inspire uncertainty on the global mineral industry. Privatization of government-controlled mineral industries continued throughout the world, especially in Africa, Asia, Central Eurasia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and Western Europe. The reasons for privatization varied among regions and countries, but the trend was universal and was not expected to end soon. Regional trade blocks were being developed and expanded. The European Union (EU), the North American Free Trade Area (NAFTA), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) , the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) , and the Latin American Southern Cone Common Market (MERCOSUR) were expected to contribute to reduced internal tariffs and increased minerals trade. Minerals consumption within the politically unstable former Soviet Union (FSU) decreased significantly without a simultaneous cutback in production, while its exports flooded the world's mineral markets. These exports into Western Europe and Japan, still in economic recession, depressed minerals and metals prices worldwide, especially for aluminum, magnesium, nickel, and potash. Increasingly restrictive environmental laws and land-access limitations in Australia, Canada, Western Europe, and the United States tended to discourage mineral resource development. However, the number of undeveloped countries in Latin America and Asia that encouraged exploration and development by revising mining and tax laws and regulations increased, thereby increasing investment opportunities for foreigners.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research on various technologies to recover alumina from domestic resources for feedstock to existing aluminum smelting capacity as a means to reduce dependence on imported bauxite, which represents 93 pct of U.S. aluminum requirements. One of the more promising technologies being investigated is the hydrochloric acid leaching of kaolinitic clay. In the hydrochloric acid leaching technology, alumina is recovered from iron-free aluminum chloride leach liquor and separated from impurity elements by sparging the liquor with HC1 gas to crystallize aluminum chloride hexahydrate (ACH). A large-scale crystallizer with a 336-gallon usable volume was constructed and operated to obtain engineering and design data for potential scale up and to demonstrate the ability of the technology to produce specification grade alumina. Test campaigns involving about 1,400 hours of operation were completed. ACH meeting all chemical purity requirements could not be produced by a single crystallization, but was produced by recrystallizing the product from the calcined kaolin clay leach liquor. Product crystals with a size distribution of more than 80 pct plus 100 mesh and 65 pct plus 65 mesh were made at a rate of 10 pounds of ACH/(hr)(ft3). The zirconium tube heat exchanger used to maintain constant process temperature operated with an over-all heat transfer coefficient of 420 to 500 BTU/(hr)(ft2)(°F).

Ventilation-air-heating plants are in use at several iron mines on the Menominee Iron Range, Iron River, Mich. Many of the mines are exceptionally wet; during winter months, when fresh air is forced down the wet air shafts into the mine, it is usually necessary to heat the fresh air to above freezing so that the openings will not be closed by ice. The problem of ice closing air shafts has been solved by the practice of reversing the air current before the openings have become completely closed. This procedure involves drawing warm air from the mine up the usual down-draft air shaft. The M. A. Hanna Co. has found, at some of their mines on the Menominee Range, that it is more convenient to heat the below-freezing air rather than reverse the air current. Intermittent freezing and thawing of ice that has formed in the air shaft tends to loosen the wall rock, requiring major shaft repairs. The openings are kept free of ice the year around by heating the fresh air during periods of below-freezing weather. Table 1 shows the monthly minimum moan, maximum mean, and mean temperatures for the Iron River area. Under normal conditions of temperature, the furnaces are fired in November and usually are not allowed to go out until April of the following year.

Yesterday, air pollution was somebody else's problem -- today, it is everybody's problem. The coal industry with thermal coal drying, is aware of their problem and the necessity of doing an acceptable job; however, there is much to be said as to how good a job is required and what performance limits should be set up. American Air Filter Company has been one of the pioneers in the solution of the thermal coal dryer dust problems, Because of high moisture content, products of combustion and occasional temperature surges, only wet collection has been considered as the practical approach. Our first installation goes back some 12 years with a total to date of 29 Individual wet collectors, each, fabricated of suitable corrosion-resistant material, at 14 operating plants. To eliminate a potential air pollution problem, a performance requirement of not more than approximately one-quarter (1/4) grains per cubic foot in the dust collector discharge was used. In nearly all installations, operating performance surpassed requirements, but discharge stacks were not entirely free of discoloration. However, plant nuisance and air pollution complaints were eliminated. This satisfactory performance was accomplished by medium priced wet dust collectors operating at a 4-6" W.G. pressure drop with cater drain requirements of about 1 gallon of drain water per 1000 cubic feet of air exhausted.

The First Conference of the Powder Metallurgy Committee convened in the East Foyer of the Hotel Waldorf-Astoria, New York City, at 9:45 a.m., on Feb. 21, 1944, Mr. John Wulff, General Chairman, presiding. THE CHAIRMAN.-In behalf of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers I welcome all members and guests to this conference on Powder Metallurgy. We hope that this meeting will give expert and novice in the field a chance for discussion. Unfortunately, the subject has been overemphasized by some, and, of late, severely criticized by others. We have here today powder producers, fabricators, and engineers of different viewpoints, who can make the meeting a success. Such success depends not only on the caliber of the papers presented but more so on the discussion. To give you time for a free exchange of views, the papers have been shortened purposely. With the hope that you will all benefit by this conference, I shall turn the meeting over to the Chairmen of the morning session, Mr. Roland P. A dynamic, interactive map has been developed of the life cycle of a number of metals, from mining through to minerals processing, metal production, product manufacturing, recovery and waste management. Whilst the existing metal process network and waste management infrastructure provide substantial scope for (product) design, these also limit change due to the complex interdependence of metals, both in production and recovery, and the strong path dependency of industry and infrastructure development. Therefore, models for dynamic simulation were constructed that allow the specification and evaluation of the metal process network and waste management infrastructure ‘products’ over a longer time span. The model has been constructed using a bottom-up approach, to enable assessment of the environmental aspects of metallurgy and to simulate changes in the system structure and technology, i.e. from reactor or individual process step up to integrated material cycles. The model comprises hierarchical mass balances and linear models of individual processes and sub-processes. Thus, at lower system aggregate levels an increasing level of technical detail is represented. Data reconciliation has been used literature data on process feed, products and residue composition to calculate representative and reliable split factors around each (sub-)process. World production figures on process capacity and recovery rates are be used to calculate the relative contribution of processes. The dynamic map is illustrated with a case on the introduction of lead-free solder.
