As a result of the main processes of the limestone treatment ? sawing, buffing and polishing, a technological waste is usually obtained. These final tailings consist of a water suspension with highly variable solid phase content and granulometric composition. Since the waste is conducted to a tailing pool or another place, this leads to environment pollution. In this work the slurry waste generated during the limestone processing in a Bulgarian limestone manufacturing company was characterized. The chemical composition, particle size distribution, solid phase content, whiteness, yellowness, abrasion, specific surface and density were determined. The possibility of obtaining building/construction materials from limestone processing waste was studied in a laboratory scale. The technological tests included thickening, filtration and drying of waste products. Continuous operation laboratory thickener was used. Coagulant Accepta® 8302 (aluminum sulphate solution) and anionic flocculant Magnafloc® 155 were found to be the most effective in the sedimentation of the products. Filtration tests were performed using a laboratory pressure filter. Drying tests were carried out in laboratory facilities using the direct heating method. On the basis of the laboratory results a technology for limestone treatment waste was developed. A production line for building materials from limestone slurry was set up. As a result the manufacturing company has a possibility to use circulating water.

Acrylic polymers have been found to be effective dispersants and stabilizers in a wide variety of mineral processing applications including rheology control in concentrated slurries. This paper will describe these low molecular weight, water-soluble polymeric dispersants and provide a basis for how they function in concentrated slurries based on computer molecular modeling and applications results. Data on homopolymers as well as copolymers of acrylic acid will be presented to demonstrate the optimization of a polymeric dispersant in preparing high solids slurries of inorganic materials such as kaolin, calcium carbonate, lime, and magnesium hydroxide.

"This paper shows a mathematical model based on finite elements, applied to bottom poured shell ingots of C.V.G. Sidor Plant. The model was used as a strategy to determine the thermal effects that are produced when solidification conditions are modified without interfering with the production process. The modification consisted of placing a thermal insulator on top of mould.The results obtained by the model indicated that the solidification time increases with insulator on base of the mould. With these results a significant number of casts were run with and without insulator. Latter by means of a metallurgical analysis it was determinated that the ingots cast with insulator reduce the level of non-metallic inclusions and the presence of internal blistering in seamless pipes.IntroductionThe process of fabrication of seamless pipes in SIDOR involves various steps of processing, such as heating the ingots, fabrication of the prelaminated, fabrication of the bored pipe, lamination of the pipe by passing through the pellegrine mill, heating the pipe in a walking bean furnace and final calibration through a calibrator mill. The material utilized for producing these pipes is provided entirely from a electrical arc furnace and casted ingots, especifically, from the superintendence of bottom pouring.The process of bottom pouring consists of positioning twelve moulds of diameters 415, 480 or 505 mm over a plate of grey cast iron in which exists a system of communicating vessels. The ingots are distributed around a central duct from which the steel flows down and filling gradually, each one of the moulds (Fig. 1)."

Laboratory research on the reducing and matte smelting of Jamesonite concentrate has been carried out. The influence of the process conditions such as the smelting temperature, the amount of pyrite cinder (the agent of fixed sulfur) and the amount of additives on the smelting process have been studied. Under the optimum condition the direct recovery ratios of antimony and lead are 83.26% and 68.50% respectively. The ratio of fixed sulfur is 98.97% but more than 15% lead and 30% silver remained in the ferrous matte. The key problem to be solved of this new process is how economical and effective is the recovery of silver and lead in ferrous matte.

"The waters of Lake Superior flow into those of Lake Huron through the St. Mary's river. The rapids in this river are about half a mile wide and three-quarters of a mile long, in which distance the fall amounts to about twenty feet. Since this was the only obstacle to navigation between the west end of Lake Superior and ports on any of the other Great Lakes except Ontario, attempts were made many years ago to permit the passage of small boats from Lake Huron to Lake Superior by means of canals and locks. The first canal was built on the Canadian side of the river by the Northwest Fur Company in 1797-98. The lock was 38 feet long, 8 feet 9 inches wide and had a lift of 9 feet. A tow path was made along the shores for oxen to track the bateaux and canoes through the upper part of the rapids., The lock was destroyed during the war of 1812 by United States troops from Mackinac Island.The first ship canal, known as the State Canal, was built on the American side of the river in 1853-55, about 750,000 acres of land in Michigan having been granted by congress to a private company as a 'concession for its construction. This canal was more than a mile long, 65 feet wide at the bottom and 100 feet wide at the water's surface. It had two locks, each 350 feet long by 70 feet wide, with a lift of about 9 feet. The depth of water in the canal was about 13 feet and in the locks about 11 1/2 feet."

"Preparation and growth processes of CaF2 on Si(111) and of . InxGa1-x,As islands on CaF2 by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) are described. It was found that first of all the Si(111) surface treatment process to obtain the 7x7 reconstructed structure was necessary to ensure the cleanness of the surface and to grow a flat and high quality CaF2 on it. Growth of InxGa11-x,As islands on CaF2 was tried by droplet heteroepitaxy using the same MBE reactor. In,GaxGa1-xAs islands were successfully grown epitaxially, and the size and density of the islands dependent on the In composition were investigated.IntroductionThough semiconductor/semiconductor heterostructures are widely used for many device applications, small band off-sets of the conduction bands and the valence bands restrict the utilization of the intra-subband transitions to far-infrared regions. With InAs as the quantum well and fluorides as the barrier layers, we can design three-electronic-level systems in the infrared region, which is the low loss transmission window of the silica optical fibers. To realize those structures, we have grown InxGa1-xAs islands on CaF2 thin films that were epitaxially formed on Si(111) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. By the droplet heteroepitaxy that we invented, the InxGa1-xAs islands with height of -10 nm have been obtained successfully. Optimum processing to obtain atomically smooth surfaces of Si and CaF2 and high quality InxGa1-xAs islands is reported.ExperimentsMBEMachineCaF2 was grown on Si(111) and InxGa1-xAs islands were grown on CaF2 successively by MBE. The MBE machine consisted of a growth (or reactor) chamber and a loading chamber. The reactor chamber was equipped with Ga, In, As and Er metal source cells and CaF2 and BaF2 source cells. Cell materials were P-BN for Ga, In and As metals, and were graphite for CaF 2, BaF 2 and Er to avoid reaction with BN cells. The electron gun and screen were attached to the reactor to observe the RHEED pattern during the substrate surface treatment and the growth of CaF2 and InxGa1-xAs islands. The substrate manipulator was designed to heat up the Si substrate up to 1,200°C for the surface cleaning. The QMS was also equipped to analyze the residual gas species in the reactor chamber. The base pressure of the reactor chamber was 2-5x10-11 Torr, being pumped by ion pump and the liquid nitrogen shroud"

A simple, easily constructed apparatus suitable for the zone refining of iron and other reactive materials is described. After eight passes at one inch per hour, the iron produced showed a marked drop in hardness to 49 Brinell. In addition, an arbitrarily -defined recrystallization temperature was lowered by about 35°C and the rate of grain growth greatly increased. CERTAIN materials, of which iron is one, are so reactive that they cannot be zone refined in any known container without becoming contaminated. For such substances, the floating zone method ( 1) may be used. In this method, the specimen is supported vertically in an inert atmosphere and the molten zone supports itself by its own sur-face tension. The method was first applied to silicon (2) and has since been used for other reactive metals such as zirconium and titanium. The Monsanto Company's Henry Mine is located 17 miles northeast of Soda Springs, in the southeast corner of Idaho. Ore being mined is phosphate rock which lies in the Permian Phosphoria formation. The ore is the raw material for Monsanto's three furnace elemental "P" plant near Soda Springs. The finished product from the furnaces is elemental phosphorus which is subsequently used in the manufacture of detergents, food preservatives, fire retardants and other consumer items. Mining is by open pit methods using 0-9 crawler tractors to rip and push-load rubber tired scrapers in stripping and mining operations. The equipment spread consists of six D-9G crawler tractors, four Caterpillar 6578 scrapers, eight Euclid S-24 scrapers, one Reich T750 drill and one Caterpillar No. 16 patrol plus various support equipment. Stripping is performed on a 12-month basis, two shifts per day. Mining is performed mainly in the summer months on a one shift basis. The hauling season begins May 15 and ends November 1 due to freezing weather and snow conditions. Annual production is 1,000,000 tons of phosphate rock and 2,500,000 to 3,000,000 yards of stripping. Stripping, mining and hauling is performed for Monsanto by Dravo-Soda Springs, a mining contractor. Dravo-Soda Springs owns, operates and maintains all equipment used in stripping, mining and hauling. The contractor is paid for stripping by the bank yard and for ore mined and hauled on a tonnage basis. The Monsanto elemental phosphorus plant began production in 1952 with ore being trucked to the plant from the Ballard Mine. Haulage was over public roads in 15, 24-ton semitrucks. A private haul road was constructed from the Ballard Mine to the Monsanto Plant in 1958 and 1959 to accommodate trucks with two twenty-yard trailers. This 11/ mile road was first used in the 1959 hauling season. In 1965, five new Kenworth tractors with two, 'forty yard trailers were introduced into the haulage system. The CX-EW technology, developed by B.U.S Engitec, is improved introducing besides the battery paste electrowinning, the direct electrorefining of metallic lead (grids and poles) obtained from CX breakers. This new concept of electrorefming the antimonial lead scrap is aimed to the production of 99.99 lead and of slimes with high antimony content, avoiding gaseous emissions in melting lead scrap, and expensive and pollutant thermic refining operations. In this way, practically all lead content in the battery is available as 99.99 lead, hence with a wider market for the lead recyclers. This paper will describe the tests performed on a pilot plant scale with special reference to the relatively low energy consumption of the process.

In pressure oxidation leaching of copper anode slimes, than 65% of the tellurium is m' cxtraoted during decopperizing. About l0- 15% of the selenium is also dissolved simultane¬ously by severe leach conditions. Current operation for the treatment of the leachate is to constantly recirculate the leach solution through a bed of copper turnings. The tellurium and sele¬nium are precipitated from the leach liquor as copper telluride and copper selenide and sepa¬rated from the solution by filtration. In order to improve the reaction efficiency and reduce the process cost, viz, minimize the copper addition, cut retention time, and reduce the energy consumption; a chemical reducing agent is studied and the cementation process tested in the laboratory. In this paper, the test results are presented and the process chemistry is discussed.

One of the most persistent topics at technical gatherings and in the recent scientific press has been the reduction of iron ore. To cite some of them, in May 1960, a symposium on the subject was sponsored by the Electrochemical Society. The proceedings, comprising two dozen papers, were later published.3/ More recently, November 1966, a similar gathering took place at Michigan Technological University, Houghton, Mich. The latest meeting was the International Congress on Production and Utilization of Reduced Materials, Evian, France, May 1967. If the volume of literature, symposia and conferences is a measure of industry concern, then current interest must be at a high level. To the casual observer of the metallurgical scene, the abiding and recurring attention to iron ore reduction outside the blast furnace must be somewhat puzzling in that so much research endeavor has resulted in so little commercial activity.

"Ni-Fe alloys have an inverse magnetostrictive effect (Villari effect) in which its permeability varies according to the ·applied strain. This alloy film has a potential for application as force sensors such as torque sensors, tension sensors and so on. Electrodeposition is promising as a technique for preparing Ni-Fe alloy film because of its convenience and economy. In this paper, the effects of electrolysis conditions on the magnetic properties of electrodeposited Ni-Fe alloy films were investigated. Hysteresis loops of Ni-Fe alloy films on copper substrates from sulfate bath were measured by a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The films of low coercivity, which were preferred when used as a force sensor were obtained by introducing certain additives to the sulfate type bath.INTRODUCTIONNi-Fe alloys show an inverse magnetostrictive effect (Villari effect) that their permeability varies depending on the applied strain. The films of this alloy have a potential for application as force sensors such as torque sensors, tension sensors and so on. The authors et al. tried to prepare Ni-Fe alloy films using the sputtering technique, and produced a prototype of Ni-Fe alloy torque sensor [I]. The sensitivity was higher in the torque sensor thus produced than the strain gauge type one, and this torque sensor enables non-contacted detection. It showed excellent durability and reliability. However, the formation of Ni-Fe alloys by sputtering requires higher costs and brought an another problem that the shape of the substrate on which the film was formed was considerably limited. This causes a hindrance to the wide-range application of the force sensors. Electrodeposition is promising as the technique for preparing Ni-Fe alloy films because of its convenience and economy. In this paper, the effects of the conditions of electrodeposition on the magnetic properties of Ni-Fe alloy films were studied."

"IntroductionEFFLORESCENCE is herein considered to be any deposit of salts on the surface of a masonry structure that is brought from within or through the structure by capillarity and deposited by evaporation. Usually, efflorescence is white although green, yellow, and brown efflorescence is sometimes observed.The common white efflorescence almost always consists of sulphates of the alkali and alkaline earth metals and calcium carbonate, although sodium chloride is frequently present in structures erected near the sea shore.The first and most obvious result of the presence of soluble salts in masonry is the unsightly accumulation of these salts on the surface. This is particularly noticeable early in its life and is frequently fugitive ( 1), as much of the salt is soluble and is gradually washed away by rain. This removal can usually be facilitated by scrubbing; the structure with dilute hydrochloric acid.A more serious effect is the continuous accumulation of soluble salts as a result of ingress of sulphur acids in rain water or water from the ground. This may eventually cause spalling and disintegration by crystallization of salts in the pores of brick and mortar. An example of this type of failure, resulting from the crystallization of calcium sulphate, is discussed by Hardesty (2). Butterworth (3) describes similar failure resulting from •crystallization of magnesium sulphate."

This is not an examination of technical solutions to individual problems, but rather recommendations for overall change in management thinking. "INTRODUCTIONNo. 1 Queens Rd was an existing 10-storey office building founded on large pad footings. This project involved the construction of a 6-level, 15m (50-ft.) deep basement excavated immediately adjacent to the existing building and also beneath the existing footprint of the Southern end of the building. The total perimeter of the new basement was to be approximately 200m (656 ft.) all with a retained height of 15m (50 ft.). It was also proposed to add a further 5 storeys to the building. Approximately 18 of the existing columns supporting the 10-storey building were to have the applied column load diverted from the existing foundations at ground level onto the new piles or basement raft 15m (50 ft.) below.The geotechnical profile consisted of fill for the top 1.5m predominately comprising of clayey sand with a high gravel content from 1.5m to 9m (5 to 30 ft.), a medium dense to dense clayey sand and then below was a sandy clay extending to 15m (50 ft.) ranging from stiff to very stiff. From 15m on completely to extremely weathered siltstone was encountered. The groundwater was measured at 9.5m (31 ft.) below the natural ground surface.DESIGN BRIEFThe existing building columns were founded on large pad foundations up to 4.4m (14.5 ft.) square, founded on the dense clayey sand. These pads would require temporary support to enable the excavation to proceed beneath them. Upon completion of the excavation under the pads new columns were to be constructed joining into the existing columns to transfer the load onto the new raft slab, 15m (50 ft.) below. The existing 10 floors were to be refurbished. It was planned to undertake all the temporary support and transferring of loads while the structure above was only able to provide a dead load. It was decided that any movement of the building would have minimum impact on a skeleton structure. During the temporary support of the columns, movements due to construction activities had to be monitored to understand any potential stresses in the structure above.The original design required beams to be installed under the pads and supported at either end by temporary piles that were to be founded below the level of the proposed excavation. (Refer to sketch 1). Wagstaff Piling considered that this methodology had difficulties in construction at all stages and did not provide facility for transfer of the load without significant movement of the structure above. Wagstaff Piling revised the design to attach beams to the columns above the pads using shear collars. (Refer to sketch 2). These beams supported on the temporary piles could then be jacked upwards to remove loads off the pads. This would enable removal of the pads with minimal movement of the 10-storey building above. Gas Hydrates (Methane Hydrates) are solid, ice ? like substances composed of water and natural gas. They occur naturally in areas of the world where methane and water can combine at appropriate conditions of temperature and pressure and are found in the ocean bottom sediments and in some permafrost areas. Besides temperature and pressure, factors like bathymetry, sediment thickness, sedimentation rates, and total organic carbon content (TOC) also control gas hydrate formation in the sea. The stability of gas hydrates depends on the critical high pressure ? low temperature combination (0-17 bars, 0-25ºC), which in turn dependent on the mix of gases from which the mineral is formed. As the critical parameters can be altered by deposition, erosion or slumping of sediments, formation or melting of ice cover, rise and fall of sea level and sudden temperature changes induced by tectonic activities, current flows or volcanisms, the gas hydrates tend to be very unstable. It is becoming increasingly evident that naturally occurring gas hydrates are significant component of the shallow geosphere and are of societal concern in at least three major ways: as an energy resource, a geologic hazard and a major contributor for climatic changes.

In this investigation, the changes in the grindability of both ulexite and colemanite related with the different structural modifications created by the heat treatment were examined with respect to work index (Wi). The effects of the heat treatment temperature and time on grindability index were also investigated. It was observed that, heat treatment significantly affected on the grindability of ulexite. The work index of original ulexite was found 7.11 kWh/shton and decreased to 3.5 kWh/shton level within 200-480°C for 60 minutes. On the other hand, the work index of original colemanite was found as 6.48 kWh/shton and no appreciable change was observed when heated up to 320°C. Thermally assisted comminution can be used to improve the grindability characteristics of ulexite. Besides, the different behaviour of ulexite and colemanite under heat treatment can be used for their separation. The artificial mixture of ulexite and colemanite could be separated with over 90% recovery by utilizing their different grindability characteristics by thermal treatment, semi-autogeneous grinding and screening.

Time and motion studies were made by the Federal Bureau of Mines on the hand and machine dismantling of scrapped auto starter motors, generators, and alternators for recovery of copper, aluminum, and iron. The studies showed that an individual with power handtools and convenient access to a hydraulic press, power bandsaw, acetylene torch, and power lathe could, in an 8-hour day, disassemble about 100 starters, or 150 generators, or 30 alternators. The scrap copper yield would be 280, 390, and 45 pounds, respectively, and the iron yield would be about seven times the copper weight. About 100 pounds of aluminum would be obtained from the alternators.
